grace_n from_o christ_n and_o comfort_n from_o christ_n this_o be_v admirable_a now_o what_o hinder_v this_o submission_n why_o three_o the_o text_n say_v they_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v their_o and_o to_o go_v to_o god_n to_o fetch_v a_o principle_n of_o life_n from_o god_n these_o be_v contrary_n object_n 3_o the_o main_a objection_n of_o all_o be_v this_o if_o say_v they_o adam_n never_o have_v power_n to_o believe_v and_o so_o believe_v in_o christ_n be_v not_o in_o the_o state_n of_o his_o innocency_n then_o why_o do_v god_n condemn_v 〈◊〉_d for_o not_o believe_v see_v they_o have_v not_o this_o power_n and_o adam_n have_v it_o not_o it_o be_v all_o the_o difficulty_n that_o lie_v upon_o the_o point_n the_o answer_n be_v plain_a open_a and_o naked_a and_o therefore_o i_o answer_v before_o ever_o you_o can_v be_v comfort_v as_o for_o this_o temporary_a believer_n his_o eye_n be_v never_o open_v convict_o to_o see_v his_o sin_n and_o his_o heart_n be_v never_o burden_a with_o they_o nor_o loosen_a from_o they_o that_o so_o the_o lord_n christ_n and_o his_o comfort_n may_v be_v settle_v upon_o therefore_o in_o hosea_n 2.14_o i_o will_v allure_v she_o and_o bring_v she_o into_o the_o wilderness_n and_o speak_v friendly_a to_o she_o and_o i_o will_v give_v her_o vineyard_n from_o thence_o and_o the_o valley_n of_o anchor_n for_o the_o door_n of_o hope_n first_o in_o the_o sudden_a he_o be_v a_o forward_a professor_n at_o three_o or_o four_o day_n warning_n and_o his_o heart_n snatch_v at_o every_o sermon_n of_o mercy_n and_o he_o be_v as_o good_a a_o christian_a by_o and_o by_o as_o many_o a_o poor_a soul_n which_o have_v tug_v hard_o for_o it_o many_o a_o year_n but_o his_o conscience_n be_v never_o awaken_v he_o never_o feel_v the_o burden_n of_o his_o part_n of_o zeal_n to_o get_v they_o to_o holy_a heart_n and_o to_o exact_a life_n and_o conversation_n therefore_o i_o be_o marvellous_a hardly_o draw_v on_o to_o the_o least_o dispute_n in_o this_o kind_n and_o yet_o at_o the_o earnest_a request_n of_o some_o and_o also_o because_o this_o be_v the_o proper_a place_n where_o this_o question_n fall_v and_o to_o clear_v some_o doubt_n according_a to_o my_o promise_n and_o because_o haply_o some_o good_a mâ—n_z may_v stumble_v at_o some_o thing_n therefore_o let_v i_o deliver_v those_o thought_n which_o i_o have_v many_o time_n heretofore_o intend_v to_o impart_v and_o i_o shall_v be_v very_o willing_a to_o hear_v of_o better_a argument_n if_o any_o shall_v be_v suggest_v these_o be_v spiritual_a passage_n and_o hard_a and_o difficult_a therefore_o this_o i_o will_v tell_v you_o first_o what_o the_o controversy_n be_v and_o wherein_o it_o lie_v second_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o three_o show_v the_o order_n of_o god_n proceed_n in_o this_o work_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o when_o these_o be_v do_v the_o point_n will_v be_v very_o plain_a first_o for_o the_o first_o namely_o wherein_o this_o controversy_n lie_v it_o be_v confess_v of_o all_o hand_n that_o adam_n in_o his_o innocency_n do_v not_o believe_v in_o a_o saviour_n he_o need_v it_o not_o only_o here_o lie_v the_o main_a point_n of_o controversy_n that_o though_o adam_n do_v not_o believe_v in_o a_o saviour_n and_o god_n do_v not_o require_v it_o yet_o man_n conceive_v and_o some_o judicious_a divine_n too_o that_o adam_n have_v ability_n that_o if_o christ_n have_v be_v reveal_v he_o can_v have_v believe_v for_o they_o say_v thus_o a_o man_n be_v able_a have_v a_o clear_a eye_n to_o see_v but_o one_o world_n because_o there_o be_v no_o more_o deny_v second_o the_o reason_n to_o confirm_v this_o point_n that_o adam_n have_v not_o this_o grace_n of_o faith_n the_o reason_n be_v this_o this_o believe_a in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n â—is_fw-la that_o which_o do_v direct_o cross_v the_o estate_n of_o adam_n in_o his_o innocency_n and_o the_o innocency_n of_o adam_n wherein_o he_o be_v create_v and_o therefore_o can_v by_o no_o mean_n agree_v to_o he_o and_o that_o appear_v thus_o for_o a_o man_n to_o have_v a_o principle_n of_o life_n in_o himself_o which_o adam_n have_v and_o to_o fetch_v a_o principle_n of_o life_n from_o another_o which_o we_o do_v by_o faith_n these_o be_v contrary_a the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o he_o live_v well_o and_o to_o be_v save_v by_o live_v well_o and_o to_o be_v save_v by_o another_o and_o to_o live_v well_o by_o the_o power_n of_o another_o these_o be_v contrary_n one_o to_o the_o other_o to_o have_v all_o in_o himself_o as_o adam_n have_v and_o to_o have_v all_o from_o another_o and_o not_o in_o himself_o these_o be_v contradiction_n the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o can_v stand_v together_o and_o therefore_o observe_v it_o the_o manner_n and_o phrase_n of_o scripture_n be_v this_o and_o it_o be_v very_o strange_a phil._n 3.9_o that_o i_o may_v be_v find_v in_o he_o not_o have_v my_o own_o righteousness_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v adam_z in_o his_o to_o the_o innocence_n of_o adam_n and_o contradict_v the_o estate_n of_o adam_n in_o his_o innocency_n that_o can_v never_o agree_v to_o the_o estate_n of_o adam_n but_o for_o a_o man_n to_o believe_v in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o to_o have_v all_o from_o he_o if_o it_o have_v be_v reveal_v this_o have_v be_v cross_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o adam_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o he_o shall_v have_v this_o faith_n in_o he_o now_o i_o come_v to_o answer_v some_o objection_n object_n .1_o first_o if_o adam_n have_v not_o this_o faith_n and_o if_o the_o heart_n let_v the_o unbeliever_n enjoy_v never_o such_o mean_n and_o live_v in_o never_o so_o good_a a_o family_n yet_o he_o have_v not_o one_o sin_n kill_v they_o be_v only_o retreat_v and_o so_o unbelief_n nurse_v they_o and_o make_v they_o grow_v out_o with_o great_a violence_n this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o many_o a_o man_n that_o have_v profess_v the_o gospel_n and_o have_v have_v much_o horror_n of_o heart_n and_o many_o good_a resolution_n and_o much_o care_n express_v outward_o after_o many_o year_n his_o corruption_n break_v out_o again_o and_o get_v ground_n confusion_n of_o their_o own_o soul_n if_o god_n be_v not_o merciful_a four_o as_o unbelief_n keep_v god_n from_o the_o soul_n and_o make_v all_o mean_n unprofitable_a and_o maintain_v all_o sin_n in_o the_o strength_n and_o life_n of_o it_o so_o last_o it_o make_v the_o soul_n of_o a_o poor_a sinner_n to_o be_v in_o a_o desperate_a estate_n and_o a_o man_n continue_v in_o this_o condition_n up_o by_o the_o law_n but_o if_o it_o have_v only_o here_o a_o balk_v and_o there_o a_o balk_v than_o it_o be_v base_a deal_n and_o you_o will_v never_o have_v harvest_n nor_o hope_n of_o mercy_n upon_o this_o ground_n but_o if_o a_o man_n play_v the_o good_a husband_n he_o must_v plough_v up_o all_o from_o one_o corner_n of_o his_o conscience_n to_o the_o other_o and_o from_o the_o begin_n of_o his_o heart_n to_o the_o end_n there_o must_v be_v no_o corruption_n settle_v but_o hate_v sin_n as_o sin_n and_o therefore_o every_o sin_n this_o be_v the_o temper_n of_o the_o soul_n that_o the_o lord_n will_v do_v good_a unto_o and_o here_o be_v the_o fail_v of_o most_o unsound_a heart_n many_o religious_a man_n and_o professor_n too_o what_o they_o be_v the_o lord_n know_v they_o will_v dally_v with_o this_o sin_n and_o that_o sin_n but_o a_o true_a break_a heart_n shake_v at_o the_o least_o sin_n more_o than_o at_o all_o punishment_n and_o have_v rather_o endure_v the_o torment_n of_o hell_n than_o that_o the_o least_o sin_n shall_v be_v commit_v by_o he_o this_o be_v a_o good_a heart_n which_o make_v good_a work_n of_o it_o and_o herein_o this_o hypocrite_n fail_v so_o that_o though_o he_o have_v legal_a terror_n enough_o for_o the_o measure_n of_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o right_a for_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o for_o it_o can_v not_o be_v any_o save_a work_n of_o grace_n therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o terror_n for_o sin_n and_o yet_o the_o heart_n never_o true_o humble_v nor_o never_o plough_v in_o piece_n by_o the_o law_n and_o by_o the_o work_n of_o god_n grace_n thereby_o fit_v the_o heart_n for_o himself_o second_o and_o last_o he_o fail_v in_o make_v choice_n of_o christ_n he_o do_v not_o choose_v whole_a christ_n it_o be_v one_o part_n of_o faith_n and_o that_o which_o be_v include_v in_o rest_v the_o soul_n that_o true_o embrace_v christ_n he_o take_v the_o good_a of_o christ_n and_o the_o death_n and_o persecution_n and_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n and_o whatsoever_o come_v with_o he_o now_o here_o in_o the_o sturdy_a hypocrite_n fail_v and_o this_o be_v the_o main_a wound_n of_o he_o the_o soul_n that_o make_v choice_n of_o christ_n aright_o be_v resolve_v to_o match_v with_o christ_n and_o that_o nothing_o shall_v hinder_v he_o from_o it_o now_o this_o hypocrite_n will_v not_o match_v with_o christ_n but_o only_a trade_n with_o he_o so_o much_o as_o may_v mediate_v for_o he_o and_o be_v a_o mean_n that_o he_o may_v enjoy_v his_o belove_a honour_n and_o so_o much_o profession_n and_o so_o much_o of_o christ_n he_o will_v have_v whereas_o the_o faithful_a soul_n match_v with_o christ_n and_o trade_n with_o the_o world_n if_o honour_n will_v advance_v christ_n and_o if_o riches_n will_v make_v for_o christ_n and_o if_o his_o liberty_n will_v work_v in_o he_o a_o free_a heart_n to_o serve_v god_n than_o the_o faithful_a soul_n will_v trade_v with_o they_o but_o this_o wretch_n will_v only_o trade_v with_o christ_n and_o christ_n must_v stand_v at_o the_o door_n this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o when_o he_o profess_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n if_o a_o better_a match_n come_v in_o the_o way_n he_o take_v it_o and_o leave_v christ_n only_o thus_o much_o brief_o this_o thorny_a wretch_n take_v christ_n to_o disposâ—_n of_o christ_n but_o a_o faithful_a soul_n take_v christ_n that_o christ_n may_v dispose_v of_o he_o and_o of_o all_o that_o he_o have_v for_o his_o own_o glory_n it_o be_v the_o fashion_n of_o some_o maâ—â—_n part_n saâ—â—ie_o dominâ—â—ting_v woman_n that_o they_o will_v marry_v man_n not_o to_o make_v they_o their_o husband_n but_o their_o servant_n and_o they_o can_v be_v content_a to_o have_v comfort_n and_o service_n from_o they_o but_o not_o to_o be_v under_o the_o rule_n and_o authority_n of_o they_o as_o their_o husband_n so_o this_o sturdy_a hypocrite_n and_o this_o malapert_a heart_n will_v have_v christ_n to_o be_v at_o his_o beck_n that_o christ_n may_v provide_v honour_n and_o ease_n and_o pleasure_n for_o he_o but_o that_o christ_n may_v order_v he_o and_z his_o and_o all_o that_o he_o have_v to_o dwell_v at_o his_o command_n to_o be_v where_o he_o will_v and_o be_v at_o his_o beck_n that_o he_o will_v not_o do_v by_o no_o mean_n thus_o much_o of_o the_o sturdy_a hypocrite_n the_o last_o sort_n of_o counterfeit_n which_o be_v the_o chief_a and_o the_o upshot_n of_o all_o be_v he_o who_o i_o call_v the_o shift_a stately_a hypocrite_n he_o be_v a_o man_n that_o do_v carry_v a_o marvellous_a high_a strain_n and_o go_v with_o a_o great_a sail_n in_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o truth_n as_o the_o master_n cutpurse_n in_o his_o outside_n seem_v to_o be_v a_o man_n of_o no_o small_a account_n nor_o mean_a place_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o attendant_n apparel_n and_o he_o will_v ruffle_v it_o out_o in_o his_o silk_n and_o velvet_n as_o if_o he_o be_v some_o great_a gentleman_n of_o the_o country_n and_o yet_o he_o be_v a_o base_a vild_a wretch_n so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o base_a shift_a hypocrite_n there_o be_v two_o passage_n in_o his_o life_n and_o i_o use_v to_o call_v he_o by_o these_o two_o name_n shift_a and_o stately_a he_o have_v all_o that_o the_o sturdy_a hypocrite_n have_v and_o he_o also_o go_v beyond_o he_o in_o the_o several_a passage_n of_o his_o course_n and_o practice_n he_o be_v a_o fine_a spin_a hypocrite_n and_o have_v not_o only_o a_o ordinary_a colour_n of_o profession_n but_o he_o lay_v on_o a_o sevenfold_a gilt_n upon_o his_o course_n and_o profession_n so_o that_o as_o it_o be_v with_o some_o counterfeit_a gold_n if_o a_o man_n be_v not_o a_o good_a goldsmith_n indeed_o he_o will_v say_v it_o be_v good_a gold_n so_o if_o he_o be_v not_o a_o marvellous_a judicious_a wise_a man_n and_o able_a to_o find_v he_o out_o he_o will_v say_v that_o this_o man_n be_v a_o sound_n christian_n indeed_o now_o that_o we_o may_v know_v this_o man_n i_o will_v as_o in_o the_o handle_n of_o the_o other_o do_v three_o thing_n first_o i_o will_v show_v wherein_o he_o exceed_v the_o former_a hypocrite_n second_o wherein_o his_o falseness_n do_v appear_v three_o wherein_o he_o fall_v short_a of_o save_v faith_n for_o the_o first_o wherein_o this_o man_n do_v exceed_v the_o former_a that_o you_o may_v see_v the_o full_a proportion_n of_o he_o he_o do_v profes_o stand_v in_o comparison_n with_o the_o former_a and_o exceed_v they_o too_o and_o therefore_o he_o will_v try_v the_o business_n with_o he_o and_o view_v with_o he_o and_o what_o the_o other_o can_v say_v he_o say_v the_o same_o and_o more_o too_o the_o sturdy_a hypocrite_n have_v his_o conscience_n awaken_v so_o he_o have_v his_o heart_n awaken_v with_o a_o witness_n and_o the_o lord_n not_o only_o call_v and_o rapt_v but_o knock_v hard_o at_o the_o door_n and_o for_o christ_n he_o have_v see_v so_o much_o beauty_n and_o excellency_n in_o christ_n that_o he_o will_v lay_v down_o his_o blood_n for_o he_o thus_o far_o the_o sturdy_a hypocrite_n go_v but_o now_o this_o stately_a hypocrite_n outgo_v the_o former_a in_o three_o particular_a step_n or_o degree_n first_o he_o have_v not_o only_o so_o much_o strength_n that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o bear_v persecution_n and_o not_o to_o be_v daunt_v as_o the_o former_a have_v but_o he_o have_v that_o wisdom_n and_o strength_n of_o understanding_n that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o pass_v by_o and_o to_o cashier_v the_o honour_n and_o riches_n and_o preferment_n of_o the_o world_n and_o all_o the_o renown_n of_o all_o the_o high_a place_n in_o the_o world_n so_o that_o prosperity_n i_o mean_v all_o the_o honour_n and_o preferment_n of_o the_o world_n be_v not_o able_a to_o prevail_v with_o he_o oh_o say_v he_o the_o sturdy_a hypocrite_n be_v a_o fool_n and_o be_v catch_v with_o the_o bait_n but_o i_o see_v the_o bait_n in_o all_o these_o profit_n and_o commodity_n and_o i_o be_o able_a to_o judge_v of_o the_o baseness_n of_o all_o worldly_a thing_n and_o therefore_o i_o be_o not_o overtake_v with_o they_o i_o know_v better_o than_o be_v in_o all_o these_o if_o you_o go_v no_o further_o than_o liberty_n profit_n ease_n and_o worldly_a preferment_n this_o hypocrite_n have_v something_o better_a than_o all_o these_o as_o namely_o the_o excellency_n and_o beauty_n of_o the_o common_a grace_n which_o god_n have_v wrought_v in_o he_o and_o whereby_o god_n have_v make_v he_o able_a to_o do_v some_o duty_n in_o these_o he_o put_v a_o great_a excellency_n and_o
