and_o will_v be_v hereafter_o so_o copious_o learned_o and_o religious_o handle_v by_o other_o of_o great_a ability_n and_o far_o more_o excellent_a gift_n but_o let_v we_o come_v to_o the_o matter_n in_o hand_n the_o tentation_n of_o satan_n concern_v this_o point_n be_v of_o two_o sort_n the_o first_o tend_v to_o persuade_v we_o to_o labour_v after_o and_o to_o rest_n upon_o a_o imperfect_a and_o maim_a righteousness_n for_o our_o justification_n whereby_o we_o can_v never_o be_v justify_v in_o god_n sight_n &_o so_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n he_o cause_v we_o to_o neglect_v the_o alsufficient_a &_o most_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o jesus_n christ_n by_o which_o alone_o we_o be_v justify_v before_o god_n and_o eternal_o save_v the_o other_o tend_v to_o make_v we_o doubt_v see_v the_o fruit_n thereof_o to_o our_o comfort_n it_o be_v after_o hide_v from_o we_o again_o as_o when_o either_o we_o wound_n our_o conscience_n by_o commit_v some_o grievous_a sin_n against_o knowledge_n witting_o and_o willing_o or_o when_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o exercise_v we_o in_o the_o spiritual_a conflict_n of_o temptation_n for_o then_o sometime_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o our_o faith_n for_o a_o time_n lie_v hide_v under_o the_o ash_n of_o our_o corruption_n and_o the_o cloud_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o the_o apprehension_n of_o god_n anger_n do_v so_o overshadow_v the_o eye_n of_o our_o understanding_n that_o we_o can_v discern_v the_o beam_n of_o god_n love_n and_o favour_n shine_v upon_o we_o although_o when_o the_o conflict_n be_v end_v our_o faith_n again_o flame_v out_o in_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o zeal_n of_o his_o glory_n and_o the_o love_a countenance_n of_o the_o lord_n shine_v gracious_o upon_o we_o when_o these_o cloud_n of_o temptation_n without_o any_o great_a weariness_n nay_o with_o pleasure_n and_o delight_n if_o we_o be_v like_o the_o rich_a miser_n who_o though_o his_o back_n shall_v be_v almost_o break_v with_o the_o weight_n of_o his_o own_o gold_n yet_o will_v not_o think_v it_o any_o trouble_n nay_o will_v esteem_v it_o for_o his_o chief_a felicity_n because_o his_o burden_n please_v he_o so_o if_o we_o feel_v that_o our_o sin_n be_v a_o huge_a and_o massy_a burden_n be_v nevertheless_o not_o trouble_v nor_o weary_a of_o bear_v they_o but_o rather_o take_v our_o chief_a delight_n in_o be_v so_o load_v because_o the_o burden_n be_v exceed_o sweet_a and_o delightful_a to_o we_o we_o may_v
repentant_a and_o believe_a sinner_n let_v we_o unfeigned_o turn_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o apply_v christ_n and_o his_o merit_n unto_o we_o by_o a_o true_a &_o lively_a faith_n and_o then_o we_o may_v assure_v ourselves_o that_o he_o will_v pardon_v and_o forgive_v we_o all_o our_o sin_n and_o receive_v we_o gracious_o into_o his_o love_n and_o favour_n §_o sect._n 5_o but_o against_o this_o which_o have_v be_v allege_v believe_v that_o all_o god_n promise_n be_v make_v indefinite_o to_o all_o that_o believe_v satan_n will_v be_v ready_a to_o object_v to_o the_o afflict_a conscience_n laud_v and_o praise_v the_o lord_n for_o his_o endless_a and_o infinite_a mercy_n and_o gather_v unto_o ourselves_o assurance_n that_o though_o our_o sin_n be_v as_o grievous_a and_o heinous_a as_o any_o of_o they_o before_o name_n yet_o if_o with_o they_o we_o turn_v from_o our_o sin_n by_o unfeigned_a repentance_n and_o go_v unto_o christ_n by_o a_o lively_a faith_n we_o shall_v also_o with_o they_o receive_v the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o be_v entertain_v into_o god_n love_n and_o favour_n §_o sect._n 8_o and_o thus_o have_v i_o set_v down_o most_o infallible_a reason_n consolation_n that_o unrepentant_a sinner_n have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o the_o former_a consolation_n upon_o which_o as_o upon_o immovable_a firm_a ground_n the_o afflict_v conscience_n may_v lay_v the_o foundation_n of_o sound_a comfort_n now_o if_o any_o abuse_v the_o gospel_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o gather_v out_o of_o this_o heavenly_a doctrine_n this_o devilish_a use_n that_o our_o salvation_n by_o a_o lively_a faith_n so_o there_o be_v no_o sin_n so_o small_a and_o venial_a which_o will_v not_o plunge_v we_o into_o the_o bottom_n of_o hell_n if_o we_o live_v therein_o without_o repentance_n and_o do_v not_o desire_v to_o leave_v and_o sorsake_v it_o and_o therefore_o so_o long_o as_o we_o live_v in_o our_o sin_n and_o do_v not_o serious_o turn_v unto_o the_o lord_n by_o unfeigned_a repentance_n let_v we_o not_o in_o vain_a arrogate_v and_o misapply_v unto_o ourselves_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n the_o merit_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o sweet_a promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o unto_o such_o appertain_v the_o fearful_a threaten_n of_o the_o law_n as_o be_v still_o the_o child_n of_o wrath_n dead_a in_o their_o sin_n and_o subject_a to_o god_n heavy_a wrath_n sacrament_n and_o apply_v by_o faith_n we_o be_v justify_v in_o god_n sight_n 2.9_o phil._n 2.9_o as_o appeareth_z phil._n 2.9_o second_o whereas_o we_o say_v that_o faith_n alone_o justifi_v we_o do_v not_o understand_v such_o a_o faith_n as_o be_v alone_o without_o work_n charity_n and_o other_o sanctify_a grace_n which_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o imaginary_a dead_a and_o but_o as_o it_o be_v a_o carcase_n of_o faith_n which_o breathe_v not_o but_o that_o among_o all_o other_o grace_n virtue_n &_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n faith_n alone_o and_o not_o any_o of_o they_o be_v the_o instrument_n whereby_o we_o apply_v christ_n jesus_n unto_o we_o who_o be_v thus_o apply_v do_v justify_v us._n justification_n that_o though_o work_n do_v not_o justify_v we_o yet_o they_o be_v necessary_o require_v as_o fruit_n of_o our_o justification_n otherwise_o we_o affirm_v that_o other_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n and_o even_o good_a work_n which_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o they_o all_o do_v necessary_o accompany_v our_o justification_n not_o as_o instrument_n or_o cause_n thereof_o but_o as_o inseparable_a effect_n and_o fruit_n thereof_o so_o that_o howsoever_o we_o exclude_v work_n from_o the_o act_n of_o justify_v yet_o we_o necessary_o require_v they_o in_o the_o subject_n or_o person_n justify_v we_o affirm_v that_o faith_n alone_o justifi_v but_o we_o deny_v that_o such_o a_o faith_n which_o be_v alone_o do_v justify_v we_o we_o maintain_v that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n alone_o without_o work_n but_o with_o all_o we_o affirm_v that_o faith_n which_o be_v without_o work_n do_v not_o justify_v we_o as_o be_v dead_a false_a and_o imaginary_a this_o may_v be_v make_v plain_a by_o some_o similitude_n to_o the_o be_v of_o a_o honest_a man_n there_o be_v necessary_o require_v honest_a action_n not_o as_o cause_v but_o as_o effect_n neither_o be_v his_o honest_a action_n the_o cause_n of_o his_o honesty_n but_o his_o honesty_n the_o cause_n of_o
