they_o have_v give_v the_o name_n of_o cardinal_n to_o the_o priest_n of_o rome_n grant_v the_o son_n and_o brethren_n of_o king_n and_o christian_n prince_n to_o be_v honour_v with_o the_o same_o other_o at_o their_o devotion_n make_v they_o arm_v their_o people_n and_o march_v against_o their_o neighbour_n at_o their_o pleasure_n and_o disarm_v again_o and_o retire_v their_o force_n when_o they_o shall_v serve_v god_n consider_v also_o that_o by_o such_o person_n the_o counsel_n will_n and_o determination_n of_o king_n and_o christian_n prince_n to_o the_o which_o they_o be_v call_v shall_v thereby_o be_v reveal_v and_o manifest_v to_o they_o the_o quick_a spirit_a venetian_n have_v long_a time_n since_o discover_v this_o policy_n be_v a_o people_n of_o italy_n very_o subtle_a and_o well_o advise_v will_v never_o permit_v that_o any_o ecclesiastical_a person_n shall_v be_v admit_v into_o their_o council_n because_o they_o have_v all_o take_v the_o oath_n of_o the_o pope_n of_o rome_n see_v than_o it_o appear_v that_o the_o roman_n be_v privy_a to_o all_o the_o counsel_n and_o enterpriser_n of_o the_o prince_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o of_o their_o high_a and_o sovereign_a court_n they_o discover_v all_o their_o action_n as_o well_o as_o if_o they_o be_v present_a where_o on_o the_o contrary_a not_o one_o of_o these_o can_v come_v within_o they_o to_o under_o feel_v their_o consultation_n and_o deal_n they_o be_v so_o close_a and_o secret_a whereby_o we_o may_v judge_v clear_o how_o far_o they_o surpass_v all_o other_o people_n in_o invention_n and_o subtlety_n of_o wit_n cap._n 19_o the_o great_a force_n of_o excommunication_n to_o put_v the_o king_n of_o the_o be_v in_o fear_n to_o make_v they_o their_o tributary_n and_o the_o magnanimity_n of_o our_o king_n in_o france_n now_o i_o come_v to_o another_o device_n of_o they_o by_o the_o which_o they_o have_v so_o cunning_o triumph_v over_o the_o king_n of_o the_o earth_n never_o strike_v stroke_n for_o the_o matter_n and_o without_o any_o danger_n at_o all_o and_o yet_o they_o have_v bring_v they_o under_o as_o much_o or_o more_o than_o ever_o the_o ancient_a roman_n do_v by_o their_o trophy_n and_o great_a victory_n to_o wit_n by_o excommunication_n with_o the_o which_o they_o so_o fright_v they_o that_o if_o they_o have_v never_o so_o little_o displease_v they_o by_o and_o by_o they_o be_v threaten_v with_o rebellion_n of_o their_o subject_n to_o have_v their_o sceptre_n take_v from_o they_o and_o other_o to_o be_v invest_v therewith_o incontinent_a have_v no_o way_n in_o the_o world_n to_o resist_v or_o save_v themselves_o but_o in_o humble_v themselves_o under_o the_o greatness_n of_o their_o bishop_n yield_v themselves_o to_o be_v the_o pope_n vassal_n or_o in_o pay_v they_o otherwise_o some_o great_a and_o intolerable_a tribute_n by_o this_o mean_n they_o exact_v from_o john_n king_n of_o england_n that_o all_o his_o subject_n shall_v pay_v he_o a_o penny_n sterling_a for_o fire_n for_o the_o murder_n by_o he_o commit_v on_o the_o person_n of_o arthure_n duke_n of_o brittany_n his_o own_o nephew_n and_o heir_n which_o tribute_n the_o italian_n mine_v from_o they_o more_o than_o the_o term_n of_o trhée_o hundred_o year_n albeit_o the_o fault_n of_o this_o murder_n be_v not_o in_o the_o people_n &_o therefore_o they_o pay_v this_o tribute_n very_o unjust_o and_o against_o all_o reason_n yet_o they_o find_v mean_n to_o augment_v this_o tribute_n very_o much_o by_o the_o death_n of_o the_o archbishop_n of_o cauterburie_n who_o be_v execute_v by_o command_n of_o the_o king_n yet_o have_v the_o italian_n nothing_o to_o do_v in_o the_o matter_n have_v no_o interest_n at_o all_o therein_o be_v neither_o his_o heir_n nor_o child_n another_o tribute_n be_v exact_v of_o the_o polonian_n for_o the_o murder_n commit_v on_o the_o person_n of_o stavislaus_n their_o archbishop_n to_o which_o be_v pay_v for_o s._n peter_n tongue_n the_o pope_n have_v thunder_v by_o excommunication_n against_o the_o duke_n of_o venice_n he_o be_v fain_o to_o make_v he_o quiet_a to_o creep_v on_o all_o four_o like_o a_o dog_n have_v a_o rope_n about_o his_o neck_n to_o be_v absolve_v the_o king_n of_o navarre_n and_o granade_n for_o disobey_v he_o be_v dispossess_v of_o their_o kingdom_n which_o be_v bestow_v on_o ferdinand_n king_n of_o spain_n yet_o the_o italian_n do_v not_o forget_v themselves_o in_o this_o match_n as_o in_o deed_n they_o must_v neuer_o for_o it_o be_v upon_o this_o condition_n that_o they_o shall_v duke_n of_o anjou_n brother_n to_o lewes_n the_o nine_o yet_o not_o forget_v himself_o as_o we_o say_v before_o upon_o condition_n to_o pay_v he_o eight_o thousand_o ounce_n of_o gold_n yearly_a revenue_n he_o excommunicate_v also_o philippe_v le_fw-fr bel_n king_n of_o france_n because_o he_o will_v not_o hold_v his_o kingdom_n of_o he_o as_o his_o vassal_n but_o he_o be_v descend_v of_o the_o race_n of_o hue_n le_fw-fr grand_fw-fr county_n of_o paris_n quake_v not_o a_o whit_n at_o the_o matter_n but_o with_o a_o magnanimous_a courage_n proper_a to_o the_o king_n of_o this_o race_n constant_o resist_v and_o never_o tremble_v at_o the_o hear_n thereof_o as_o other_o christian_n king_n do_v who_o great_a magnanimity_n have_v be_v continue_v by_o his_o successor_n this_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o the_o italian_a council_n lay_v their_o head_n together_o to_o do_v their_o uttermost_a to_o ruin_v this_o monarchy_n by_o foreign_a force_n make_v it_o to_o be_v assail_v on_o every_o side_n and_o have_v set_v the_o army_n of_o the_o empire_n of_o spain_n and_o england_n to_o thrust_v this_o race_n out_o of_o their_o kingdom_n which_o seem_v to_o they_o invincible_a but_o perceive_v all_o that_o take_v not_o effect_n as_o they_o do_v wish_v they_o have_v fill_v the_o state_n full_a of_o civil_a war_n thereby_o to_o weaken_v and_o diminish_v the_o force_n of_o this_o kingdom_n and_o to_o make_v way_n to_o invest_v some_o other_o with_o y_z e_z crown_n who_o shall_v think_v himself_o bear_v under_o a_o happy_a planet_n and_o great_o behold_v to_o they_o to_o come_v by_o it_o so_o easy_o yield_v himself_o therefore_o there_o vassal_n and_o homager_n have_v purloin_v a_o kingdom_n by_o there_o mean_v who_o also_o will_v be_v easy_o entreat_v to_o let_v slip_v the_o accord_v confirm_v between_o our_o king_n and_o the_o pope_n for_o the_o privilege_n and_o liberty_n of_o the_o french_a church_n and_o touch_v the_o presentation_n of_o benefice_n reserve_v and_o by_o this_o mean_a we_o shall_v see_v this_o flourish_a kingdom_n part_v as_o a_o booty_n &_o prey_n between_o the_o italian_a keep_v for_o his_o part_n the_o spiritual_a and_o his_o drift_n of_o the_o italian_n the_o proof_n be_v most_o manifest_a in_o this_o that_o although_o charles_n the_o nine_o and_o henry_n the_o three_o of_o this_o name_n his_o brother_n be_v the_o most_o religious_a observer_n of_o the_o ceremony_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o more_o precise_a than_o any_o king_n that_o have_v be_v before_o they_o spare_v nothing_o to_o ruin_n and_o rout_n out_o the_o religion_n of_o the_o protestant_n huguenot_n not_o so_o much_o as_o their_o own_o person_n life_n treasure_n nor_o live_n nor_o their_o faith_n and_o honour_n beside_o which_o be_v more_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o can_v they_o never_o win_v the_o favour_n and_o good_a will_n of_o the_o italian_n nothing_o near_o other_o prince_n who_o have_v wrought_v little_a in_o comparison_n of_o they_o and_o what_o be_v the_o cause_n hereof_o but_o that_o the_o italian_n foresee_v that_o a_o race_n of_o ancient_a and_o so_o long_a time_n invest_v with_o the_o crown_n of_o france_n will_v never_o abide_v that_o they_o shall_v have_v any_o rule_n or_o prerogative_n over_o they_o nor_o in_o no_o way_n permit_v that_o the_o liberty_n and_o

of_o rome_n have_v seek_v all_o mean_n possible_a to_o install_v other_o prince_n in_o their_o room_n and_o to_o bring_v it_o to_o pass_v have_v employ_v all_o their_o preacher_n beg_v friar_n and_o other_o eccleisastic_n to_o vomit_v out_o all_o kind_n of_o blame_n and_o shame_v most_o opprobrious_o against_o the_o say_a king_n henry_n the_o three_o decease_a place_v he_o in_o the_o rank_n of_o the_o most_o abominable_a tyrant_n &_o murderer_n of_o the_o world_n who_o by_o their_o count_n he_o shall_v surpass_v in_o the_o period_n of_o all_o mischief_n extol_v above_o the_o heaven_n with_o the_o high_a title_n of_o praise_n which_o they_o can_v devise_v some_o other_o prince_n thereby_o to_o adjure_v they_o and_o make_v every_o one_o honour_v they_o love_v they_o and_o make_v much_o of_o they_o but_o to_o show_v that_o the_o italian_n and_o their_o partner_n mean_v no_o good_a not_o only_o to_o the_o decease_a king_n person_n but_o also_o to_o all_o his_o race_n in_o general_a see_v we_o not_o plain_o that_o when_o they_o have_v by_o treason_n cause_v he_o to_o be_v murder_v they_o continue_v their_o selfesame_a practice_n towards_o those_o of_o the_o house_n of_o bourbon_n poor_a monk_n come_v to_o be_v pope_n to_o have_v rent_n and_o tribute_n out_o of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o spain_n portugal_n naples_n sicily_n and_o polonia_n and_o as_o he_o be_v wont_v also_o out_o of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o england_n where_o as_o all_o christian_a king_n and_o prince_n take_v no_o tribute_n but_o for_o the_o most_o part_n of_o poor_a base_a and_o miserable_a people_n their_o subject_n ready_a to_o take_v then_o to_o give_v and_o this_o must_v they_o do_v by_o tax_n subsidy_n fiftéene_n and_o such_o like_a payment_n herein_o we_o may_v see_v the_o marvelous_a excellency_n of_o the_o pope_n tribute_n above_o those_o of_o all_o our_o king_n and_o to_o show_v how_o the_o sweet_a money_n and_o most_o desire_a of_o all_o go_v still_o to_o the_o part_n of_o rome_n mark_v but_o the_o common_a fashion_n of_o every_o one_o that_o fall_v into_o want_n of_o money_n he_o wish_v straight_o but_o to_o have_v a_o hundred_o or_o two_o of_o crown_n out_o of_o the_o abbot_n or_o bishop_n purse_n who_o be_v next_o to_o the_o place_n where_o he_o dwell_v as_o be_v such_o fellow_n which_o have_v least_o need_n and_o yet_o have_v the_o great_a plenty_n of_o all_o albeit_o they_o may_v wish_v for_o it_o long_o enough_o before_o they_o have_v it_o to_o fill_v their_o purse_n because_o they_o can_v devise_v no_o shift_n proper_a for_o the_o obtain_n of_o their_o desire_n although_o they_o be_v his_o very_a next_o neighbour_n but_o the_o italian_n they_o can_v work_v such_o a_o way_n and_o handle_v their_o matter_n so_o well_o that_o they_o can_v scrape_v &_o hook_n to_o they_o a_o thousand_o crown_n from_o one_o place_n and_o twice_o as_o many_o from_o another_o the_o distance_n of_o a_o hundred_o league_n or_o more_o and_o the_o difficulty_n of_o pass_v over_o the_o mountain_n can_v hinder_v they_o a_o jot_n cap._n 24._o how_o that_o this_o money_n when_o it_o be_v transport_v to_o rome_n do_v fly_v with_o a_o incredible_a swiftness_n yet_o to_o prove_v better_a that_o the_o name_n of_o quintessence_n be_v proper_o attribute_v to_o the_o gold_n that_o they_o share_v from_o other_o people_n of_o christendom_n i_o pray_v thou_o gentle_a reader_n consider_v that_o the_o substance_n of_o quintessence_n be_v of_o so_o celestial_a a_o nature_n that_o if_o it_o be_v not_o very_o close_o keep_v and_o enclose_v within_o some_o vessel_n for_o that_o purpose_n it_o leese_v straight_o the_o virtue_n and_o fly_v away_o by_o vapour_n into_o the_o air_n so_o this_o gold_n which_o they_o fetch_v so_o far_o to_o rome_n have_v such_o a_o excellency_n more_o than_o all_o other_o money_n have_v and_o have_v both_o value_n &_o virtue_n none_o like_o it_o that_o we_o
have_v not_o only_o for_o that_o it_o be_v levy_v with_o such_o wonderful_a celerity_n and_o unusual_a speed_n for_o when_o they_o purchase_v any_o collection_n of_o money_n or_o any_o other_o bull_n of_o a_o abbey_n or_o a_o bishopric_n they_o spare_v no_o horse_n flesh_n to_o gather_v up_o the_o sum_n tax_v &_o have_v get_v they_o up_o once_o they_o must_v go_v in_o post_n and_o change_v horse_n so_o often_o that_o it_o seem_v the_o fly_n with_o a_o swallow_n wing_n no_o height_n of_o mountain_n no_o rough_a narrow_a steep_a stony_a hellow_n crooked_a nor_o raggy_a way_n no_o depth_n of_o snow_n nor_o hardness_n of_o ice_n or_o frost_n no_o river_n that_o can_v stay_v or_o stop_v the_o passage_n of_o this_o money_n it_o must_v to_o rome_n it_o must_v fly_v it_o must_v not_o creep_v on_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o sure_o it_o be_v of_o a_o wonderful_a swiftness_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o heaviness_n delay_n and_o long_a time_n that_o the_o money_n of_o king_n prince_n and_o other_o great_a estate_n be_v in_o get_v into_o their_o coffer_n when_o oftentimes_o before_o they_o can_v get_v it_o in_o they_o must_v force_v the_o good_a will_n of_o their_o subject_n &_o be_v drive_v to_o choose_v out_o man_n that_o shall_v sit_v upon_o their_o subsidy_n &_o other_o impost_n &_o other_o to_o collect_v the_o same_o they_o which_o will_v not_o take_v such_o charge_n upon_o they_o but_o by_o great_a constraint_n and_o be_v urge_v by_o necessity_n and_o then_o the_o poor_a people_n pay_v such_o sum_n sore_o against_o their_o will_n put_v it_o of_o as_o long_o as_o they_o may_v then_o must_v there_o be_v strain_v of_o moveable_n and_o much_o heave_n &_o shove_v to_o have_v they_o again_o hatred_n displeasure_n anger_n ill_a will_n much_o ado_n and_o great_a delay_n on_o every_o side_n so_o that_o it_o will_v ask_v common_o three_o or_o four_o month_n at_o the_o least_o to_o collect_v and_o deliver_v in_o these_o denier_n to_o the_o receipt_n although_o it_o may_v easy_o be_v carry_v thither_o in_o three_o or_o four_o hour_n and_o in_o very_a deed_n may_v be_v say_v to_o march_v but_o with_o wooden_a leg_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o swift_a course_n and_o great_a celerity_n of_o that_o which_o be_v transport_v to_o rome_n this_o may_v very_o well_o show_v that_o the_o quality_n and_o nature_n thereof_o be_v far_o more_o excellent_a and_o precious_a then_o of_o that_o coin_n which_o the_o king_n and_o prince_n of_o the_o earth_n possess_v yet_o some_o may_v peradventure_o reply_v that_o that_o which_o come_v by_o the_o sale_n of_o office_n approach_v very_o near_a the_o nature_n thereof_o i_o will_v confess_v so_o but_o i_o will_v also_o answer_v that_o such_o traffic_n be_v but_o a_o italian_a trick_n and_o invention_n for_o that_o by_o all_o law_n and_o ordinance_n both_o of_o god_n and_o man_n all_o such_o sale_n be_v forbid_v as_o most_o pernicious_a and_o great_o damageable_a to_o the_o common_a wealth_n and_o matter_n most_o unworthy_a &_o unbeséeming_a all_o good_a christian_n that_o have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n before_o their_o eye_n cap._n 25._o a_o description_n make_v by_o learned_a man_n which_o have_v always_o fear_v the_o council_n of_o rome_n and_o the_o cause_n why_o i_o think_v i_o have_v say_v enough_o of_o the_o domination_n and_o filch_n of_o money_n wherewith_o the_o italian_n have_v a_o great_a while_n prevail_v to_o fill_v their_o pocket_n &_o to_o master_v the_o world_n now_o must_v i_o speak_v of_o the_o mean_n wherewith_o they_o serve_v their_o turn_n to_o maintain_v themselves_o in_o their_o estate_n &_o to_o make_v it_o good_a against_o all_o other_o and_o albeit_o in_o invention_n and_o devise_v the_o yare_a so_o cunning_a and_o can_v pass_v and_o make_v seem_v good_a to_o every_o one_o that_o which_o they_o have_v invent_v and_o devise_v yet_o be_v they_o far_o more_o expert_a in_o keep_v their_o estate_n and_o can_v remove_v and_o prevent_v all_o let_n that_o may_v endamage_v they_o to_o hold_v their_o own_o foresee_v then_o that_o they_o have_v entangle_v the_o people_n of_o europe_n within_o their_o domination_n under_o the_o pretence_n and_o cloak_n of_o religion_n there_o be_v no_o more_o likelihood_n that_o the_o people_n may_v ever_o pull_v their_o neck_n out_o of_o their_o yoke_n be_v far_o grosser_n and_o hard_a to_o receive_v any_o change_n than_o the_o people_n of_o africa_n see_v also_o that_o all_o that_o they_o fear_v be_v lest_o that_o some_o addict_v themselves_o to_o the_o contemplation_n of_o god_n work_n to_o the_o study_n of_o philosophy_n and_o to_o the_o read_n and_o peruse_v of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n in_o the_o language_n wherein_o they_o be_v write_v may_v view_v all_o the_o religion_n that_o be_v use_v under_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o heaven_n and_o seek_v out_o the_o first_o cause_n principle_n and_o inventor_n thereof_o and_o have_v curious_o examine_v all_o may_v make_v these_o conclusion_n viz._n that_o all_o religion_n be_v either_o divine_a or_o humane_a that_o the_o divine_a be_v proceed_v from_o god_n the_o other_o from_o man_n that_o by_o the_o divine_a there_o be_v nothing_o require_v at_o our_o hand_n but_o to_o offer_v ourselves_o soul_n and_o body_n to_o god_n to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v his_o will_n which_o be_v to_o follow_v virtue_n and_o to_o fly_v vice_n to_o call_v upon_o he_o and_o adore_v his_o holy_a name_n and_o for_o our_o sin_n i_o have_v recourse_n unto_o the_o mercy_n that_o he_o offer_v we_o in_o jesus_n christ_n the_o which_o he_o offer_v we_o free_o without_o our_o money_n or_o riches_n only_o enjoin_v we_o charitable_o to_o help_v and_o love_v one_o another_o on_o the_o other_o side_n cast_v their_o eye_n upon_o humane_a religion_n they_o shall_v see_v that_o all_o religion_n that_o man_n have_v whether_o they_o be_v pastor_n of_o the_o church_n or_o who_o soever_o they_o be_v for_o their_o author_n tend_v only_o but_o to_o get_v rule_n &_o to_o draw_v away_o the_o substance_n of_o those_o that_o embrace_v they_o and_o be_v fit_a to_o tie_v man_n by_o the_o foot_n to_o this_o earth_n then_o to_o carry_v they_o up_o to_o heaven_n where_o the_o seat_n of_o god_n be_v conclude_v likewise_o this_o that_o that_o religion_n be_v best_a by_o the_o which_o god_n be_v best_a serve_v than_o it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o follow_v his_o will_n declare_v by_o his_o word_n he_o be_v better_a serve_v then_o by_o the_o tradition_n of_o man_n wherefore_o we_o must_v not_o go_v beyond_o that_o as_o be_v the_o only_a object_n of_o faith_n and_o as_o be_v the_o only_a thing_n which_o agree_v with_o his_o doctor_n and_o preacher_n in_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o world_n to_o wit_n the_o firmament_n with_o his_o admirable_a greatness_n and_o beauty_n almost_o incomprehensible_a the_o planet_n place_v between_o it_o and_o we_o the_o air_n and_o that_o which_o be_v engender_v therein_o the_o earth_n the_o water_n and_o the_o creature_n which_o live_v and_o move_v in_o the_o same_o altogether_o set_v forth_o from_o the_o one_o end_n of_o the_o world_n to_o the_o other_o the_o greatness_n majesty_n wisdom_n providence_n power_n and_o bounty_n of_o god_n the_o creator_n and_o preserver_n of_o the_o same_o on_o the_o other_o side_n serve_v to_o convince_v we_o of_o weakness_n of_o spirit_n of_o ignorance_n of_o blindness_n and_o uncapablenes_n to_o comprehend_v his_o essence_n his_o profound_a wisdom_n and_o the_o mean_v whereby_o he_o have_v create_v all_o these_o thing_n how_o he_o it_o be_v a_o intolerable_a arrogancy_n and_o presumption_n in_o man_n to_o think_v to_o be_v his_o councillor_n to_o make_v law_n like_o little_a king_n in_o his_o church_n which_o he_o call_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heanen_n and_o his_o spouse_n to_o there_o great_a shame_n which_o name_n themselves_o servant_n in_o the_o same_o by_o who_o agreat_a oversight_n and_o rashness_n not_o to_o be_v bear_v with_o all_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v in_o it_o certain_a human_a constitutons_n as_o though_o they_o be_v to_o command_v and_o not_o to_o obey_v for_o see_v that_o it_o be_v his_o spouse_n servant_n must_v not_o be_v so_o saucy_a as_o to_o make_v law_n for_o she_o to_o be_v at_o their_o check_n see_v then_o that_o he_o be_v the_o sovereign_a king_n and_o he_o before_o who_o all_o thing_n be_v present_a no_o man_n may_v enterprise_v such_o thing_n without_o encroach_a upon_o his_o kingdom_n repute_v himself_o of_o great_a wisdom_n than_o he_o who_o be_v his_o creator_n which_o be_v grevous_a offence_n deserve_v very_o great_a punishment_n and_o clean_o
