10._o be_v thou_o a_o master_n in_o israel_n and_o know_v not_o these_o thing_n much_o like_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n to_o those_o heb._n 5.12_o who_o when_o for_o the_o time_n they_o ought_v to_o be_v teacher_n have_v need_v themselves_o to_o be_v teach_v again_o the_o first_o principle_n of_o the_o oracle_n of_o god_n and_o have_v need_n of_o milk_n not_o of_o strong_a meat_n the_o pharisee_n we_o know_v though_o great_a pretender_n to_o religion_n and_o a_o strain_n of_o devotion_n beyond_o other_o and_o to_o a_o great_a exactness_n to_o the_o mode_n and_o formality_n of_o the_o jewish_a worship_n then_o in_o practice_n yet_o be_v no_o great_a friend_n to_o christ_n or_o to_o his_o doctrine_n this_o make_v nicodemus_n be_v one_o of_o they_o not_o will_v at_o first_o to_o own_v it_o open_o that_o he_o may_v not_o give_v a_o public_a scandal_n to_o those_o of_o his_o own_o party_n till_o he_o shall_v be_v better_o inform_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o in_o a_o private_a way_n to_o avoid_v offence_n come_v to_o jesus_n by_o night_n for_o be_v a_o inquisitive_a person_n willing_a to_o satisfy_v himself_o and_o not_o rely_v only_o upon_o other_o judgement_n to_o go_v blindfold_a as_o the_o crowd_n carry_v he_o and_o suspect_v there_o may_v be_v somewhat_o more_o than_o man_n be_v common_o aware_a of_o in_o this_o despise_a doctrine_n he_o resolve_v strange_a but_o as_o be_v one_o of_o the_o most_o necessary_a and_o fundamental_a doctrine_n in_o religion_n and_o that_o which_o be_v christ_n doctrine_n in_o the_o text_n shall_v be_v my_o doctrine_n at_o present_a whereof_o through_o god_n assistance_n i_o now_o purpose_n to_o speak_v the_o necessity_n of_o regeneration_n or_o a_o new_a birth_n except_o a_o man_n be_v bear_v again_o he_o can_v see_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n which_o perhaps_o may_v seem_v as_o strange_a to_o some_o in_o this_o age_n as_o it_o do_v to_o nicodemus_n then_o there_o be_v those_o who_o do_v not_o only_o as_o perhaps_o at_o first_o he_o do_v doubt_v of_o it_o but_o scoff_v and_o reproach_n it_o who_o make_v but_o a_o jest_n of_o it_o at_o the_o best_a if_o not_o a_o subject_n of_o burlesque_n and_o drollery_n and_o such_o like_a unsavoury_a discourse_n unbeseeming_a a_o christian_n mouth_n and_o ear_n but_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o first_o or_o last_o to_o be_v a_o serious_a thing_n not_o so_o needless_a nor_o yet_o so_o very_a easie_n as_o profane_a person_n persuade_v themselves_o as_o to_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o doctrine_n it_o will_v need_v no_o signification_n import_v that_o state_n dignity_n and_o power_n which_o earthly_a king_n and_o prince_n have_v over_o their_o people_n and_o subject_n with_o the_o greatness_n splendour_n and_o other_o appurtenance_n to_o such_o dominion_n but_o be_v here_o to_o be_v understand_v in_o a_o figurative_a sense_n for_o something_o great_a splendid_a and_o excellent_a as_o kingdom_n be_v or_o be_v think_v to_o be_v for_o it_o be_v not_o mean_v that_o those_o who_o be_v here_o say_v to_o be_v bear_v again_o shall_v be_v king_n and_o prince_n such_o as_o on_o earth_n be_v so_o call_v but_o that_o they_o shall_v enjoy_v a_o condition_n as_o great_a as_o glorious_a as_o excellent_a as_o that_o of_o king_n and_o prince_n yea_o much_o more_o than_o so_o and_o thus_o much_o be_v employ_v in_o that_o addition_n when_o it_o be_v call_v the_o
kingdom_n of_o god_n which_o be_v partly_o a_o note_n of_o distinction_n partly_o a_o note_n of_o eminence_n it_o be_v usual_a in_o scripture_n when_o a_o word_n of_o ordinary_a use_n for_o natural_a and_o earthly_a thing_n be_v metaphorical_o apply_v to_o signify_v somewhat_o that_o be_v spiritual_a to_o add_v some_o epithet_n for_o distinction_n as_o when_o christ_n be_v call_v the_o true_a vine_n the_o true_a shepherd_n the_o bread_n of_o life_n the_o bread_n that_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n the_o spiritual_a rock_n etc._n etc._n by_o way_n of_o distinction_n from_o bread_n a_o rock_n a_o vine_n a_o shepherd_n in_o the_o proper_a acceptation_n of_o the_o word_n but_o they_o do_v withal_o imply_v a_o eminency_n or_o great_a excellency_n of_o the_o thing_n so_o metaphorical_o describe_v then_o of_o that_o which_o the_o word_n in_o their_o proper_a sense_n do_v signify_v for_o the_o meaning_n be_v not_o that_o christ_n be_v true_o a_o vine_n or_o true_o a_o shepherd_n etc._n etc._n in_o the_o proper_a sense_n of_o those_o word_n but_o somewhat_o that_o be_v thereby_o resemble_v more_o excellent_a than_o it_o that_o he_o be_v so_o fruitful_a so_o pleasant_a so_o comfortable_a as_o that_o the_o fruitfulness_n of_o the_o vine_n the_o pleasantness_n of_o the_o grape_n the_o comfortableness_n of_o the_o wine_n which_o make_v glad_a the_o heart_n of_o man_n be_v but_o a_o faint_a shadow_n and_o resemblance_n of_o what_o he_o be_v in_o truth_n that_o he_o be_v so_o kind_a so_o tender_a so_o careful_a of_o he_o as_o that_o the_o kindness_n the_o tenderness_n the_o care_n of_o a_o shepherd_n towards_o his_o flock_n do_v but_o faint_o resemble_v what_o he_o be_v in_o truth_n so_o here_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n or_o as_o elsewhere_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n the_o heavenly_a kingdom_n with_o the_o like_a expression_n do_v import_n not_o such_o as_o what_o man_n on_o earth_n call_v a_o kingdom_n but_o somewhat_o else_o thereby_o resemble_v and_o glory_n that_o happy_a and_o bless_a condition_n which_o god_n have_v design_v for_o those_o that_o he_o make_v his_o child_n but_o those_o who_o be_v to_o enjoy_v this_o happiness_n must_v first_o be_v bear_v again_o for_o so_o we_o hear_v but_o now_o flesh_n and_o blood_n can_v inherit_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o as_o the_o text_n have_v it_o except_o a_o man_n be_v bear_v again_o he_o can_v see_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n we_o be_v therefore_o in_o the_o second_o place_n to_o consider_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v bear_v again_o or_o as_o the_o margin_n read_v it_o to_o be_v justification_n or_o that_o of_o adoption_n do_v proper_o import_v in_o the_o object_n a_o real_a change_n but_o only_o a_o relative_n for_o the_o traitor_n thus_o pardon_v and_o thus_o advance_v
