these_o thing_n the_o apostle_n pray_v not_o only_o for_o glorious_a and_o transcendent_a christian_n man_n of_o renown_n but_o for_o all_o the_o ephesian_n for_o all_o ordinary_a christian_n among_o they_o he_o will_v have_v none_o of_o they_o destitute_a of_o a_o spirit_n of_o wisdom_n and_o revelation_n and_o what_o shall_v this_o spirit_n do_v it_o shall_v enlighten_v the_o organ_n even_o the_o eye_n of_o their_o understanding_n otherwise_o it_o be_v beyond_o the_o power_n of_o create_a gift_n to_o reach_v the_o clear_a discern_v of_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n as_o they_o be_v dispense_v in_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n and_o as_o in_o all_o sight_n there_o be_v the_o organ_n and_o the_o medium_fw-la and_o the_o object_n the_o eye_n be_v the_o organ_n the_o air_n be_v the_o medium_n the_o thing_n see_v be_v the_o object_n so_o do_v the_o apostle_n here_o pray_v that_o the_o eye_n of_o their_o understanding_n may_v be_v enlighten_v far_o above_o the_o capacity_n of_o reason_n yea_o above_o the_o capacity_n of_o the_o spiritual_a gift_n which_o they_o have_v receive_v for_o he_o desire_v that_o a_o spirit_n of_o wisdom_n and_o revelation_n may_v be_v give_v they_o though_o the_o lord_n have_v bless_v they_o with_o all_o spiritual_a blessing_n already_o they_o have_v believe_v and_o have_v be_v seal_v yet_o here_o be_v something_o more_o to_o be_v attain_v they_o want_v a_o further_o enlighten_v by_o the_o clear_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o medium_n by_o which_o we_o discern_v all_o thing_n therein_o and_o for_o the_o object_n he_o do_v express_v what_o it_o be_v that_o you_o may_v know_v what_o be_v the_o hope_n of_o his_o call_n and_o the_o riches_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o inheritance_n in_o the_o saint_n and_o what_o be_v the_o exceed_a greatness_n of_o his_o power_n to_o usward_o which_o believe_v etc._n etc._n these_o thing_n the_o apostle_n pray_v that_o the_o spirit_n will_v reveal_v even_o the_o hope_n that_o god_n have_v lay_v up_o for_o his_o saint_n glorious_a thing_n be_v speak_v of_o the_o church_n of_o god_n great_a and_o glorious_a hope_n be_v prepare_v for_o they_o and_o they_o be_v beget_v unto_o they_o even_o to_o a_o inheritance_n incorruptable_a and_o undefiled_a that_o by_o virtue_n of_o our_o call_n we_o may_v have_v fellowship_n with_o god_n the_o father_n and_o with_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n 1_o joh._n 1.2_o 3._o some_o degree_n of_o fellowship_n we_o have_v already_o but_o the_o hope_n of_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v be_v beyond_o all_o our_o comprehension_n and_o beyond_o what_o any_o create_a understanding_n can_v search_v into_o the_o depth_n of_o and_o yet_o we_o may_v see_v much_o in_o the_o hope_n of_o preservation_n and_o quicken_a to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a in_o the_o hope_n of_o god_n turn_v all_o thing_n to_o the_o best_a for_o we_o we_o may_v see_v much_o of_o the_o rich_a and_o plenteous_a redemption_n sanctification_n our_o calling_n be_v to_o be_v exercise_v in_o they_o all_o until_o at_o length_n all_o their_o enemy_n be_v subdue_v and_o death_n at_o length_n swallow_v up_o in_o victory_n this_o the_o apostle_n pray_v for_o that_o their_o eye_n may_v be_v open_v to_o behold_v all_o these_o mystery_n and_o thus_o do_v the_o holy_a ghost_n clear_v up_o our_o understanding_n and_o the_o scripture_n whereby_o we_o understand_v and_o the_o object_n which_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v by_o we_o even_o the_o riches_n of_o grace_n here_o bestow_v upon_o we_o and_o lay_v up_o in_o heaven_n for_o we_o but_o how_o do_v the_o holy_a ghost_n work_v these_o thing_n quest_n indeed_o they_o be_v unconceivable_a mystery_n better_o feel_v then_o tell_v the_o spirit_n do_v reveal_v himself_o partly_o in_o witness_v unto_o our_o spiritual_a estate_n answ_n and_o partly_o by_o reveal_v all_o other_o counsel_n of_o his_o truth_n needful_a for_o we_o to_o know_v in_o this_o our_o age_n and_o time_n wherein_o any_o christian_a man_n
sanctification_n of_o the_o best_a hypocrite_n under_o heaven_n they_o may_v go_v far_o and_o yet_o at_o length_n fall_v away_o this_o be_v no_o arminianism_n but_o if_o you_o search_v the_o scripture_n diligent_o you_o will_v find_v these_o thing_n to_o be_v true_a but_o such_o instance_n deceive_v the_o arminian_o there_o be_v a_o four_o difference_n between_o the_o covenant_n of_o excellent_a ministry_n to_o be_v the_o mediator_n of_o a_o better_a covenant_n establish_v upon_o better_a promise_n heb._n 8.6_o thus_o we_o see_v in_o this_o first_o use_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n i_o may_v in_o the_o second_o place_n from_o hence_o also_o gather_v a_o argument_n against_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o arminianism_n use_v 2_o for_o they_o look_v at_o no_o gift_n of_o god_n but_o mere_o upon_o the_o faith_n or_o work_v of_o the_o creature_n foresee_v if_o you_o speak_v of_o election_n they_o tell_v many_o thing_n in_o popery_n and_o arminianssm_n come_v to_o be_v confute_v from_o hence_o for_o in_o truth_n they_o hold_v forth_o no_o more_o but_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o if_o we_o will_v not_o grant_v faith_n and_o good_a work_n to_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o the_o bless_a gift_n of_o god_n they_o will_v take_v it_o marvellous_o unkindly_a but_o they_o be_v as_o good_a deliver_v unto_o we_o another_o gospel_n this_o may_v also_o serve_v to_o teach_v the_o people_n of_o god_n to_o bear_v a_o gracious_a respect_n unto_o those_o that_o be_v under_o a_o covenan_n tof_o work_v use_v 3_o and_o not_o forthwith_o to_o condemn_v they_o as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n of_o their_o salvation_n for_o god_n never_o call_v any_o unto_o fellowship_n with_o himself_o in_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n but_o ordinary_o he_o first_o bring_v they_o into_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n the_o ignorant_a look_n to_o be_v save_v by_o their_o good_a prayer_n and_o by_o their_o good_a serve_v of_o god_n after_o god_n may_v terrify_v and_o humble_v their_o soul_n with_o the_o sense_n of_o their_o palpable_a wickedness_n then_o they_o may_v reform_v and_o trust_v in_o their_o performance_n and_o then_o god_n may_v burn_v up_o all_o such_o false_a confidence_n therefore_o those_o that_o be_v under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n may_v belong_v unto_o the_o lord_n as_o well_o as_o thyself_o pray_v for_o they_o therefore_o paul_n be_v under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n steven_n pray_v for_o he_o and_o as_o most_o conceive_v that_o prayer_n be_v effectual_a unto_o his_o conversion_n and_o paul_n be_v as_o dear_a unto_o the_o lord_n as_o steven_n himself_o be_v man_n under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n the_o lord_n may_v bring_v they_o home_o unto_o himself_o by_o dash_v all_o their_o work_n in_o piece_n and_o show_v they_o the_o presidence_n of_o their_o spirit_n and_o the_o lord_n will_v also_o come_v and_o pluck_v away_o the_o cawl_n from_o their_o heart_n and_o then_o they_o will_v have_v none_o in_o heaven_n but_o christ_n nor_o in_o the_o earth_n in_o comparison_n of_o he_o and_o then_o the_o holy_a ghost_n convince_v they_o of_o this_o sin_n above_o all_o their_o other_o sin_n that_o they_o have_v not_o believe_v on_o jesus_n christ_n do_v not_o therefore_o censure_v any_o such_o as_o to_o say_v there_o be_v no_o likelihood_n that_o they_o shall_v ever_o come_v to_o have_v fellowship_n with_o christ_n for_o if_o the_o lord_n make_v they_o to_o fall_v down_o before_o he_o and_o to_o yield_v up_o their_o spirit_n unto_o the_o lord_n in_o holy_a reverence_n and_o fear_v these_o have_v now_o receive_v some_o fecret_a smoke_a affection_n beside_o a_o spirit_n of_o burn_a which_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o quench_v it_o may_v serve_v in_o the_o next_o place_n to_o clear_v up_o our_o judgement_n in_o sundry_a passage_n that_o do_v concern_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n use_v 4_o by_o answer_n unto_o these_o six_o question_n follow_v 1._o quest_n what_o be_v the_o first_o gift_n that_o ever_o the_o lord_n give_v unto_o his_o elect_n first_o of_o all_o he_o give_v himself_o the_o father_n answ_n and_o the_o son_n and_o the_o holy_a spirit_n this_o be_v the_o foundation_n and_o if_o you_o shall_v lay_v faith_n in_o the_o foundation_n before_o these_o the_o foundation_n will_v lie_v uneasy_o and_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o true_a christian_a shall_v not_o lie_v long_o in_o peace_n christ_n must_v therefore_o be_v first_o and_o with_o he_o faith_n come_v in_o to_o receive_v he_o first_o he_o will_v make_v a_o covenant_n with_o the_o covenant_n no_o other_o foundation_n but_o he_o take_v he_o first_o therefore_o for_o he_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n give_v but_o whether_o do_v not_o the_o lord_n give_v we_o some_o save_a preparation_n before_o jesus_n christ_n object_n reserve_v due_a honour_n to_o such_o gracious_a and_o precious_a saint_n as_o may_v be_v otherwise_o mind_v answ_n i_o confess_v i_o do_v not_o discern_v that_o the_o lord_n work_v and_o give_v any_o save_a preparation_n in_o the_o heart_n till_o he_o give_v union_n with_o christ_n for_o if_o the_o lord_n do_v give_v any_o save_a qualification_n before_o christ_n than_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o salvation_n before_o christ_n and_o that_o seem_v to_o be_v prejudicial_a unto_o the_o grace_n and_o truth_n of_o jesus_n christ_n for_o if_o there_o be_v no_o name_n under_o heaven_n give_v whereby_o we_o must_v be_v save_v but_o only_o jesus_n christ_n nor_o his_o name_n but_o in_o a_o way_n of_o fellowship_n with_o he_o than_o it_o seem_v to_o i_o apparent_o to_o follow_v that_o whatsoever_o save_v work_n there_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v not_o there_o before_o christ_n be_v there_o it_o be_v true_a john_n baptist_n be_v send_v to_o subdue_v all_o flesh_n by_o a_o spirit_n of_o burn_v which_o burn_v up_o carnal_a confidence_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o abraham_n and_o all_o their_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n here_o be_v indeed_o preparation_n for_o christ_n but_o these_o be_v not_o save_v they_o be_v still_o child_n of_o wrath_n you_o serpent_n you_o generation_n of_o perform_v many_o duty_n and_o may_v avoid_v much_o sin_n and_o yet_o will_v sin_v against_o their_o conscience_n and_o tread_v under_o foot_n those_o mean_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v commit_v unto_o they_o it_o be_v then_o most_o righteous_a with_o god_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v condemn_v 2._o of_o what_o use_n be_v the_o obedience_n of_o the_o law_n unto_o such_o who_o god_n soul_n take_v no_o most_o deboist_a and_o profane_a wretch_n more_o humble_v and_o ready_a to_o hearken_v to_o the_o voice_n of_o christ_n and_o soon_o convince_v of_o the_o necessity_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n than_o those_o that_o be_v but_o moral_o righteous_a by_o the_o law_n rom._n 9.30_o 31_o 32._o the_o gentile_n which_o follow_v not_o after_o righteousness_n have_v attain_v to_o righteousness_n even_o the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o faith_n but_o israel_n which_o follow_v after_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n have_v not_o attain_v to_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n wherefore_o because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o chap._n 10.31_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n you_o then_o unto_o man_n that_o be_v under_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o bring_v unto_o fellowship_n with_o christ_n therein_o of_o what_o use_n be_v the_o law_n of_o of_o god_n unto_o such_o be_v it_o utter_o antiquate_v or_o be_v there_o any_o more_o to_o be_v do_v with_o it_o the_o apostle_n answer_v this_o question_n answ_n when_o he_o say_v i_o be_o not_o without_o the_o law_n to_o god_n but_o under_o the_o law_n to_o christ_n 1_o cor._n 9.21_o so_o mind_n you_o the_o law_n be_v of_o use_n unto_o the_o apostle_n paul_n but_o how_o as_o the_o law_n come_v under_o christ_n so_o paul_n come_v under_o the_o law_n this_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o the_o answer_n but_o that_o will_v be_v further_o explain_v what_o mean_v he_o when_o he_o say_v i_o be_o under_o the_o law_n to_o christ_n in_o some_o sense_n a_o christian_n be_v whole_o free_v from_o the_o law_n in_o some_o sense_n he_o be_v yet_o under_o the_o law_n so_o far_o as_o the_o law_n be_v any_o way_n beside_o or_o
