superior_a as_o brass_n or_o silver_n with_o gold_n whence_o i_o conclude_v that_o the_o great_a saint_n be_v fit_a to_o make_v the_o grate_a statesman_n not_o only_o because_o they_o be_v freee_a from_o corruption_n and_o least_o sway_v with_o passion_n and_o interest_n then_o great_a blinder_n of_o judgement_n but_o also_o for_o the_o singular_a advantage_n their_o natural_a ability_n receive_v from_o the_o light_n and_o assistance_n of_o divine_a grace_n whence_o it_o be_v observable_a in_o our_o history_n that_o in_o catholic_a time_n learned_a bishop_n and_o virtuous_a prelate_n be_v employ_v ordinary_o both_o at_o home_n and_o abroad_o in_o the_o mannagement_n of_o weighty_a affair_n and_o who_o i_o pray_v more_o know_v than_o they_o or_o aught_o to_o be_v of_o great_a integrity_n as_o a_o general_a opinion_n acquird_v by_o his_o just_a and_o upright_o carriage_n prefer_v he_o to_o the_o chancellorship_n of_o the_o university_n so_o his_o prudent_a demeanment_n in_o the_o same_o made_z king_n harry_z the_o 3._o prefer_v he_o to_o that_o of_o the_o kingdom_n and_o though_o upon_o that_o good_a king_n death_n at_o his_o own_o earnest_a request_n he_o be_v licence_v by_o his_o sonn_n edward_n to_o relinquish_v it_o yet_o he_o keep_v he_o still_o of_o his_o privy_a council_n and_o how_o much_o he_o esteem_v his_o advice_n be_v see_v by_o what_o we_o recount_v in_o the_o 23._o chapter_n he_o that_o can_v wade_v through_o the_o deep_a affair_n of_o two_o chancellorship_n and_o a_o bishopric_n and_o keep_v still_o above_o the_o water_n of_o any_o dislike_n or_o dissatisfaction_n where_o so_o many_o sink_n must_v needs_o have_v be_v support_v with_o a_o great_a prudence_n the_o mean_n he_o use_v for_o this_o support_n be_v to_o have_v know_v and_o conscientious_a man_n about_o he_o who_o understand_v both_o what_o in_o prudence_n be_v to_o be_v do_v and_o will_v execute_v it_o honest_o and_o when_o all_o circumstance_n due_o weigh_v he_o find_v that_o according_a to_o the_o dictate_v of_o prudence_n and_o conscience_n this_o be_v to_o be_v effect_v or_o that_o omit_v he_o stick_v so_o close_o to_o his_o principle_n that_o neither_o fear_n nor_o respect_n can_v move_v he_o in_o the_o least_o and_o this_o we_o confirm_v with_o a_o example_n in_o the_o 8._o chapter_n we_o must_v also_o consider_v the_o time_n in_o which_o he_o bear_v the_o aforesaid_a office_n most_o unquiett_a and_o turbulent_a and_o to_o keep_v sure_a foot_n on_o such_o slippery_a ground_n argue_v a_o great_a prudence_n and_o wisdom_n it_o argue_v that_o he_o can_v master_v both_o the_o time_n and_o himself_o not_o they_o he_o and_o now_o have_v give_v as_o good_a á_z character_n of_o this_o virtue_n in_o our_o saint_n as_o my_o brevity_n and_o information_n will_v allow_v it_o be_v time_n to_o make_v a_o end_n and_o though_o i_o have_v say_v little_a in_o regard_n of_o what_o may_v be_v say_v yet_o i_o think_v i_o say_v much_o to_o it_o and_o his_o commendation_n when_o i_o show_v that_o by_o it_o he_o order_v both_o his_o spiritual_a and_o temporal_a concern_v so_o as_o to_o prove_v himself_o a_o great_a saint_n in_o the_o former_a and_o a_o great_a statesman_n in_o the_o latter_a in_o his_o decline_a age_n especial_o after_o he_o be_v make_v bishop_n he_o withdraw_v himself_o as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v from_o all_o worldly_a employment_n the_o more_o to_o apply_v himself_o to_o heavenly_a and_o that_o be_v the_o great_a point_n of_o prudence_n which_o ever_o he_o exercisd_v teach_v he_o that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n be_v to_o be_v seek_v in_o the_o first_o place_n and_o above_o all_o for_o what_o will_v it_o avail_v one_o to_o gain_v the_o whole_a world_n if_o he_o loose_a heaven_n and_o his_o own_o sort_n of_o people_n do_v not_o bind_v itself_o with_o in_o our_o own_o island_n but_o work_v at_o sea_n as_o well_o as_o at_o land_n and_o pass_v our_o strait_n it_o fill_v both_o france_n and_o italy_n as_o well_o as_o scotland_n and_o ireland_n and_o as_o all_o receive_v a_o new_a access_n of_o joy_n by_o this_o new_a access_n of_o honour_n so_o every_o one_o strive_v to_o put_v on_o a_o new_a fervour_n of_o devotion_n suitable_a to_o his_o merit_n and_o their_o obligation_n a_o new_a declare_v saint_n be_v like_o a_o new_a star_n in_o the_o pirmament_n he_o draw_v as_o many_o heart_n as_o that_o do_v eye_n and_o if_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o latter_a be_v more_o visible_a the_o communication_n of_o the_o former_a be_v more_o benign_a and_o oblige_a a_o flame_n of_o devotion_n which_o be_v continual_o nourish_v with_o the_o oil_n and_o fuel_n of_o successive_a blessing_n need_v not_o fear_v a_o decrease_n of_o heat_n and_o such_o be_v the_o people_n towards_o our_o saint_n one_o king_n and_o two_o queen_n have_v be_v see_v prostrate_a pilgrim_n before_o his_o tomb_n nor_o be_v their_o majesty_n ever_o more_o glorious_o great_a then_o when_o thus_o humble_a before_o god_n servant_n there_o be_v no_o true_a greatness_n then_o that_o which_o accrue_v from_o a_o profound_a humility_n all_o the_o prince_n and_o noble_n of_o the_o land_n imitate_v their_o example_n with_o votary_n in_o their_o hand_n the_o great_a prelate_n and_o their_o clergy_n be_v the_o first_o in_o this_o religious_a worship_n nor_o be_v it_o then_o account_v superstition_n or_o idolatry_n to_o honour_n god_n in_o his_o saint_n how_o happy_a be_v the_o people_n of_o this_o kingdom_n in_o such_o a_o propitious_a patron_n where_o in_o their_o great_a plunge_n of_o necessity_n they_o need_v only_o as_o it_o be_v to_o ask_v and_o have_v if_o the_o grace_n be_v fit_a to_o be_v impart_v and_o they_o dispose_v to_o receive_v it_o his_o shrine_n alone_o be_v a_o pharmacopaea_n or_o dispensatory_a of_o receypts_n for_o the_o cure_n of_o all_o maladys_n even_a death_n itself_o and_o thus_o it_o continud_a many_o year_n to_o the_o common_a comfort_n of_o all_o and_o doubtless_o will_v long_o have_v we_o remain_v still_o in_o the_o union_n of_o god_n church_n and_o communion_n of_o his_o saint_n member_n of_o that_o mystical_a body_n which_o only_o partake_v of_o the_o divine_a influence_n of_o itts_n head_n christ_n jesus_n the_o breach_n of_o which_o union_n break_v all_o our_o happiness_n and_o we_o into_o division_n from_o our_o mother_n the_o church_n from_o who_o to_o be_v divide_v be_v a_o utter_a disinherit_n from_o the_o birthright_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n since_o he_o shall_v not_o have_v god_n for_o his_o father_n who_o have_v not_o the_o church_n for_o his_o mother_n as_o wittness_v s._n austin_n and_o s._n cyprian_n a_o most_o unfortunate_a breach_n which_o as_o it_o unsainted_a saint_n and_o demolishd_a the_o shrine_n their_o forefather_n devotion_n have_v erect_v to_o their_o sacred_a memory_n what_o wonder_v if_o it_o obstruct_v thereby_o the_o stream_n of_o their_o favour_n it_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o give_v holy_a thing_n to_o dog_n or_o cast_v such_o pearl_n to_o swine_n to_o feed_v on_o yet_o to_o sbew_v that_o the_o saint_n be_v still_o in_o heaven_n and_o powerful_a with_o alm._n god_n if_o we_o be_v but_o worthy_a to_o deserve_v his_o favour_n even_o in_o our_o time_n not_o many_o year_n ago_o a_o furious_a plague_n sweep_v all_o before_o it_o in_o the_o town_n of_o hereford_n and_o threaten_v utter_a destruction_n to_o the_o inhabitans_fw-la that_o pestilential_a contagion_n receive_v such_o a_o check_n from_o our_o saint_n relic_n carryd_v in_o a_o private_a procession_n that_o it_o give_v a_o total_a surcease_n to_o the_o same_o and_o so_o sudden_o that_o it_o be_v ascribd_v to_o miracle_n such_o reserve_v of_o his_o ancient_a bounty_n alm._n god_n be_v now_o and_o then_o please_v to_o communicate_v to_o keep_v our_o devotion_n on_o foot_n and_o give_v we_o hereby_o a_o pledge_n that_o when_o he_o fee_v time_n he_o will_v restore_v both_o our_o distract_a country_n to_o unity_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o current_n of_o his_o grace_n to_o their_o wont_a channel_n the_o generality_n of_o devotion_n have_v to_o this_o saint_n may_v in_o part_n also_o be_v show_v by_o the_o numberless_a number_n of_o donaryes_n offer_v at_o his_o tomb_n nor_o can_v i_o give_v my_o reader_n a_o more_o satisfactory_a account_n of_o they_o then_o by_o relate_v what_o i_o find_v specifyd_v in_o the_o register_n of_o the_o lord_n commissioner_n as_o they_o be_v exact_a in_o all_o so_o in_o this_o particular_a also_o and_o what_o they_o find_v extant_a they_o cause_v to_o be_v list_v in_o a_o schedule_n and_o to_o give_v here_o a_o review_v of_o it_o will_v perchance_o not_o be_v ungrateful_a thus_o than_o it_o specifyes_n inprim_n a_o hundred_o and_o 70._o votive_a ship_n in_o silver_n and_o in_o wax_n 41._o item_n diverse_a image_n of_o silver_n some_o of_o the_o whole_a body_n other_o of_o several_a part_n in_o all_o 129._o of_o the_o whole_a body_n in_o wax_n 436._o of_o bracelet_n and_o other_o ornament_n belong_v to_o woman_n many_o pearl_n and_o other_o jewel_n which_o be_v say_v to_o have_v be_v offer_v out_o of_o devotion_n among_o which_o there_o be_v 450._o gold_n ring_n 70._o silver_n ring_n 65._o necklace_n of_o gold_n 31._o of_o silver_n and_o diverse_a precious_a stone_n nor_o must_v we_o omit_v other_o chain_n though_o of_o iron_n anchor_n pike_n arrow_n sword_n fauchon_n etc._n etc._n instrument_n of_o hurt_n receive_v and_o now_o monument_n of_o miraculous_a cure_n and_o all_o these_o with_o in_o the_o space_n of_o little_a more_o than_o the_o first_o 20._o year_n after_o his_o translation_n and_o before_o his_o canonization_n what_o may_v we_o conceive_v of_o the_o whole_a age_n or_o two_o next_o ensue_v to_o what_o a_o mass_n will_v they_o probable_o swell_v in_o two_o centinaryes_n when_o by_o his_o canonization_n and_o consequent_o increase_v of_o devotion_n he_o come_v to_o be_v better_o know_v and_o more_o religous_o worshippd_v and_o consequent_o more_o profuse_a of_o his_o grace_n those_o to_o who_o the_o forfeiture_n of_o all_o do_v escheat_n when_o of_o catholic_a worship_n all_o become_v protestant_a profanation_n those_o i_o say_v can_v have_v inform_v we_o more_o exact_o if_o they_o please_v for_o though_o they_o love_v not_o saint_n nor_o their_o shrine_n yet_o they_o can_v both_o finger_fw-la and_o devour_v all_o the_o donaryes_n which_o hang_v at_o they_o of_o what_o mettle_n soever_o they_o be_v without_o the_o least_o scruple_n of_o conscience_n or_o indigestion_n according_a to_o the_o drift_n of_o my_o first_o design_n here_o shall_v my_o narrative_n make_v a_o end_n it_o be_v no_o part_n of_o my_o intention_n to_o bulk_n it_o further_o with_o his_o miracle_n and_o we_o have_v touch_v upon_o all_o the_o chief_a passage_n of_o his_o life_n which_o have_v come_v to_o our_o knowledge_n but_o because_o diverse_a particular_n relate_v to_o his_o virtue_n can_v not_o be_v insert_v in_o the_o say_v former_a passage_n and_o that_o part_n of_o his_o life_n his_o virtue_n i_o mean_v import_v we_o most_o for_o our_o instruction_n and_o imitation_n for_o why_o do_v we_o write_v or_o read_v the_o life_n of_o saint_n but_o that_o we_o many_o imitate_v they_o therefore_o i_o will_v make_v a_o brief_a but_o full_a review_v of_o some_o of_o the_o say_v his_o virtue_n and_o illustrate_v and_o confirm_v they_o with_o such_o example_n as_o i_o find_v upon_o record_n with_o which_o i_o be_o furnish_v by_o the_o forementiond_v process_n it_o be_v great_a pity_n to_o deprive_v they_o of_o light_n xxii_o chapter_n his_o humility_n and_o abstinence_n i_o will_v heginn_v with_o his_o humility_n as_o the_o foundation_n and_o preserver_n of_o all_o virtue_n and_o sanctity_n the_o ground_n work_n on_o which_o all_o spiritual_a edification_n that_o be_v the_o house_n of_o perfection_n be_v to_o be_v raise_v nor_o be_v it_o
