these_o word_n we_o must_v observe_v that_o it_o be_v the_o purpose_n of_o the_o apostle_n to_o show_v brief_o the_o privilege_n of_o the_o godly_a above_o all_o other_o or_o what_o themselves_o be_v before_o their_o conversion_n and_o the_o privilege_n of_o their_o estate_n may_v be_v consider_v either_o positive_o in_o itself_o or_o comparative_o it_o be_v describe_v positive_o verse_n 9_o and_o second_o their_o alliance_n or_o kindred_n they_o be_v a_o choose_a kindred_n three_o their_o dignity_n above_o other_o man_n they_o be_v royal_a king_n four_o their_o function_n or_o private_a employment_n before_o god_n priest_n five_o their_o behaviour_n or_o outward_a conversation_n they_o be_v holy_a six_o their_o number_n they_o be_v a_o nation_n seven_o their_o acceptation_n with_o god_n they_o be_v a_o peculiar_a people_n first_o for_o election_n the_o apostle_n look_v upon_o the_o word_n in_o exodus_fw-la 19.5_o 6._o and_o see_v that_o they_o describe_v the_o happiness_n of_o thing_n in_o our_o election_n which_o shall_v much_o ravish_v we_o as_o to_o consider_v election_n first_o when_o we_o be_v choose_v viz._n before_o the_o foundation_n of_o the_o world_n from_o all_o eternity_n oh_o what_o a_o favour_n be_v it_o to_o think_v that_o god_n have_v such_o thought_n of_o we_o before_o ever_o we_o have_v any_o be_v ephes_n 1.4_o second_o by_o who_o we_o be_v choose_v viz._n by_o god_n man_n be_v wont_a to_o be_v affect_v if_o any_o of_o any_o degree_n almost_o do_v point_n out_o they_o above_o other_o unto_o any_o condition_n of_o praise_n or_o preferment_n to_o the_o high_a honour_n why_o god_n have_v choose_v and_o call_v we_o to_o no_o less_o a_o happiness_n than_o a_o kingdom_n and_o glory_n yea_o his_o kingdom_n and_o glory_n in_o heaven_n mat._n 25.34_o 2._o thes._n 2.13_o 14._o four_o for_o how_o long_o this_o choice_n must_v last_v viz._n for_o ever_o to_o be_v choose_v to_o a_o great_a office_n though_o it_o be_v but_o for_o a_o year_n be_v a_o the_o natural_a man_n or_o for_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n for_o provide_v mean_n for_o this_o spiritual_a kingdom_n than_o in_o open_v a_o way_n for_o earthly_a kingdom_n which_o may_v appear_v by_o diverse_a difference_n for_o first_o king_n none_o but_o great_a man_n and_o of_o great_a mean_n can_v attain_v to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o this_o world_n but_o here_o the_o poor_a may_v have_v a_o kingdom_n as_o well_o as_o the_o rich_a bless_a be_v the_o poor_a in_o spirit_n for_o they_o be_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n second_o while_o the_o father_n live_v the_o little_a child_n can_v reign_v whereas_o in_o this_o kingdom_n little-ones_a attain_n to_o the_o kingdom_n and_o safe_o hold_v it_o mat._n 18._o three_o this_o kingdom_n be_v of_o heaven_n whereas_o the_o other_o be_v scum_n of_o the_o people_n even_o so_o be_v wicked_a man_n in_o god_n account_n neither_o will_v their_o outward_a show_n help_v they_o for_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n be_v try_v not_o by_o word_n he_o that_o win_v the_o conquest_n over_o his_o own_o heart_n be_v great_a than_o he_o that_o win_v a_o city_n second_o put_v on_o the_o lord_n jesus_n the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n be_v the_o may_v in_o the_o general_a taste_n that_o be_v know_v and_o believe_v that_o the_o mystery_n of_o christ_n be_v true_a but_o they_o can_v taste_v or_o know_v this_o mystery_n with_o particular_a and_o sound_a application_n as_o they_o four_o in_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o taste_n or_o delight_n for_o a_o wicked_a man_n persuade_v by_o false_a reason_n settle_v in_o the_o common_a hope_n or_o transport_v with_o a_o high_a conceit_n of_o some_o temporary_a and_o common_a gift_n and_o grace_n may_v be_v much_o delight_v and_o joy_v in_o the_o word_n and_o the_o thought_n of_o go_v to_o heaven_n for_o a_o time_n but_o he_o never_o right_o apply_v the_o promise_n of_o grace_n in_o christ_n nor_o do_v he_o ever_o possess_v so_o much_o as_o one_o infallible_a sign_n of_o a_o child_n of_o god_n five_o in_o the_o effect_n and_o consequent_n of_o taste_v for_o 1._o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v taste_v but_o he_o never_o digest_v a_o evil_a conscience_n cast_v up_o the_o food_n again_o religion_n and_o delight_n in_o the_o word_n and_o in_o religion_n and_o religious_a duty_n who_o yet_o never_o do_v attain_v to_o it_o but_o constant_o find_v a_o weariness_n secret_a loathe_n and_o many_o time_n a_o secret_a and_o inward_a ill_a savour_n in_o the_o word_n and_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n so_o as_o the_o
the_o thief_n upon_o the_o cross_n consider_v that_o god_n have_v offer_v thou_o thy_o pardon_n in_o the_o sacrament_n fear_v the_o lord_n therefore_o and_o his_o goodness_n and_o return_v with_o reject_v they_o and_o go_v on_o with_o his_o work_n in_o convert_n both_o jew_n and_o gentile_n without_o they_o the_o judgement_n express_v be_v that_o christ_n who_o they_o so_o much_o hate_v and_o oppose_v shall_v be_v in_o spite_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o to_o their_o extreme_a vexation_n make_v king_n of_o the_o church_n and_o exalt_v to_o supreme_a power_n over_o all_o thing_n and_o the_o only_a stay_n of_o the_o whole_a church_n both_o of_o jew_n and_o gentile_n and_o herein_o it_o be_v to_o be_v note_v both_o the_o manner_n how_o this_o shall_v be_v do_v in_o the_o word_n be_v become_v or_o be_v make_v and_o also_o the_o time_n in_o that_o he_o say_v it_o be_v make_v builder_n quest._n a_o question_n may_v be_v move_v here_o for_o the_o sense_n viz._n how_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n and_o such_o like_a man_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v builder_n builder_n ans._n for_o answer_v whereunto_o we_o must_v understand_v that_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n and_o so_o wicked_a man_n that_o possess_v eminent_a place_n in_o the_o church_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v builder_n first_o in_o the_o account_n of_o the_o multitude_n whatsoever_o they_o be_v indeed_o yet_o they_o be_v common_o so_o account_v as_o builder_n and_o prime_a man_n in_o manage_v the_o affair_n of_o the_o church_n second_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n may_v be_v acknowledge_v in_o some_o respect_n as_o builder_n indeed_o they_o do_v god_n some_o work_n for_o howsoever_o they_o do_v not_o sound_o teach_v christ_n yet_o they_o draw_v the_o people_n by_o their_o doctrine_n to_o avoid_v on_o the_o right_a hand_n the_o stoical_a strictness_n of_o the_o essenes_n and_o on_o the_o left_a hand_n the_o profane_a irreligiousnesse_n of_o the_o sadducee_n three_o they_o be_v builder_n by_o call_v they_o have_v the_o name_n not_o so_o much_o from_o what_o they_o be_v as_o from_o what_o man_n in_o their_o place_n have_v be_v or_o aught_o to_o have_v be_v and_o these_o be_v the_o person_n that_o oppose_v christ_n and_o be_v thus_o severe_o judge_v of_o god_n diverse_a thing_n may_v be_v hence_o note_v first_o that_o man_n may_v be_v great_a in_o their_o own_o opinion_n and_o in_o the_o account_n of_o the_o world_n who_o yet_o be_v nothing_o set_v by_o of_o god_n such_o be_v these_o pharisee_n luke_n 16.14_o 15._o and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v labour_v for_o a_o spirit_n without_o guile_n and_o not_o be_v wise_a in_o ourselves_o or_o rest_n in_o outward_a show_n but_o seek_v the_o praise_n of_o god_n we_o be_v safe_a if_o god_n allow_v of_o we_o though_o all_o the_o world_n the_o manner_n the_o time_n follow_v in_o that_o he_o say_v it_o be_v become_v christ_n be_v head_n of_o the_o corner_n according_a to_o the_o present_a time_n first_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o type_n of_o it_o christ_n be_v become_v head_n of_o the_o corner_n in_o that_o david_n be_v make_v king_n of_o israel_n as_o a_o type_n of_o christ_n kingdom_n over_o the_o church_n second_o christ_n first_o they_o shall_v be_v give_v up_o to_o scandal_n and_o then_o second_o to_o despair_v before_o i_o open_v the_o word_n particular_o diverse_a thing_n may_v be_v note_v in_o general_n first_o reason_n that_o the_o punishment_n that_o light_n upon_o particular_a wicked_a man_n be_v to_o be_v account_v the_o punishment_n of_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o unbeliever_n as_o here_o despair_n and_o take_v offence_n at_o christ_n it_o may_v light_v upon_o some_o particular_a offender_n only_o yet_o they_o be_v punishment_n belong_v to_o all_o 1._o because_o there_o be_v no_o judgement_n but_o all_o wicked_a man_n have_v deserve_v it_o 2._o because_o when_o god_n plague_v some_o he_o mean_v all_o he_o threaten_v all_o 3._o because_o no_o wicked_a man_n can_v be_v sure_a for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v that_o he_o shall_v not_o fall_v into_o they_o 4._o because_o the_o affliction_n of_o this_o life_n be_v typical_a to_o wicked_a man_n as_o despair_n be_v a_o typical_a hell_n and_o so_o all_o other_o judgement_n be_v but_o little_a hell_n and_o this_o doctrine_n shall_v much_o amaze_v impenitent_a sinner_n if_o they_o consider_v that_o any_o fearful_a judgement_n they_o see_v fall_v upon_o other_o may_v fall_v upon_o they_o and_o that_o god_n be_v aswell_o displease_v with_o their_o sin_n as_o with_o the_o sin_n of_o those_o he_o so_o plague_v as_o christ_n show_v luke_n 13.1_o to_o 6._o second_o that_o from_o one_o and_o the_o same_o cause_n may_v arise_v diverse_a and_o contrary_a effect_n as_o christ_n that_o be_v a_o stone_n of_o foundation_n to_o the_o believer_n be_v a_o stone_n of_o stumble_v to_o the_o unbeliever_n thus_o in_o luke_n 2._o he_o be_v appoint_v for_o the_o rise_n and_o fall_v of_o many_o in_o israel_n thus_o the_o gospel_n of_o peace_n be_v to_o wicked_a man_n a_o fire_n a_o sword_n a_o fan_n it_o be_v a_o savour_n of_o life_n to_o the_o godly_a and_o a_o savour_n of_o death_n to_o the_o wicked_a 2._o cor._n 2._o as_o the_o sun_n melt_v the_o wax_n and_o harden_v the_o clay_n this_o come_v to_o pass_v by_o accident_n and_o by_o the_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o wicked_a man_n and_o by_o the_o fearful_a judgement_n of_o god_n use_v the_o use_n shall_v be_v to_o teach_v we_o therefore_o not_o to_o rest_v in_o the_o have_v of_o the_o mean_n of_o salvation_n as_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n etc._n etc._n for_o through_o thy_o corruption_n it_o may_v be_v a_o mean_n of_o great_a damnation_n three_o that_o of_o all_o judgement_n in_o this_o life_n spiritual_a judgement_n be_v the_o worst_a which_o appear_v from_o hence_o in_o this_o that_o when_o the_o lord_n will_v declare_v his_o special_a displeasure_n upon_o wicked_a man_n he_o threaten_v these_o in_o this_o place_n as_o the_o most_o fearful_a now_o for_o explication_n of_o this_o point_n all_o judgement_n in_o this_o life_n be_v either_o spiritual_a or_o temporal_a by_o temporal_a judgement_n i_o mean_v such_o as_o have_v their_o proper_a effect_n on_o the_o outward_a man_n such_o as_o be_v poverty_n disgrace_n sickness_n imprisonment_n loss_n in_o man_n estate_n and_o the_o like_a by_o spiritual_a judgement_n i_o mean_v such_o as_o have_v their_o proper_a effect_n upon_o the_o soul_n as_o for_o example_n hardness_n of_o heart_n the_o spirit_n of_o slumber_n dissertion_n or_o the_o absence_n of_o god_n the_o take_v away_o of_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o mind_n the_o withhold_a of_o the_o gospel_n the_o deliver_v of_o man_n up_o to_o the_o power_n of_o satan_n or_o to_o the_o love_n of_o lie_n terror_n of_o despair_n or_o take_v of_o offence_n of_o which_o late_a in_o this_o place_n now_o reason_n these_o spiritual_a judgement_n be_v much_o worse_a than_o any_o of_o the_o former_a temporal_a cross_n first_o because_o these_o judgement_n light_a upon_o the_o best_a part_n of_o man_n which_o be_v the_o soul_n and_o by_o how_o much_o the_o soul_n be_v better_a than_o the_o body_n by_o so_o much_o it_o be_v worse_a to_o be_v distress_v in_o soul_n than_o in_o body_n second_o because_o they_o withhold_v from_o we_o the_o best_a good_a which_o be_v god_n or_o christ_n now_o that_o which_o straighten_v we_o in_o the_o best_a thing_n
so_o he_o do_v two_o way_n first_o by_o remove_v what_o may_v hinder_v the_o work_n as_o the_o displeasure_n of_o god_n and_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n which_o he_o do_v by_o be_v make_v sin_n for_o we_o 2._o cor._n 5.22_o second_o by_o purchase_v and_o bring_v to_o light_a immortality_n and_o also_o the_o people_n that_o shall_v possess_v it_o which_o purchase_n he_o make_v with_o his_o we_o therefore_o to_o restrain_v the_o flesh_n as_o much_o as_o we_o can_v and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v with_o the_o same_o labour_n restrain_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o to_o this_o
