in_o the_o tavern_n marvel_v you_o not_o to_o see_v the_o joy_n of_o these_o man_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n unto_o who_o the_o church_n be_v a_o jail_n the_o minister_n be_v a_o keeper_n the_o lord_n be_v a_o judge_n themselves_o be_v the_o prisoner_n and_o their_o zeal_n be_v as_o joyful_a to_o they_o as_o little_a ease_n yet_o for_o all_o this_o we_o will_v rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n and_o account_v one_o day_n spend_v in_o his_o court_n better_a than_o a_o thousand_o spend_v else_o where_o and_o as_o david_n rejoice_v to_o see_v other_o man_n go_v so_o will_v we_o rejoice_v when_o our_o number_n be_v increase_v when_o our_o voice_n be_v advance_v and_o our_o lord_n jesus_n magnify_v the_o 1._o reason_n of_o this_o doctrine_n be_v these_o first_o because_o this_o joy_n in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n be_v a_o token_n of_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n his_o spirit_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n rom._n 14._o 17._o so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n when_o man_n be_v lumpish_a and_o heavy_a in_o this_o worship_n and_o heavenly_a business_n it_o be_v a_o token_n they_o like_v not_o the_o matter_n but_o be_v hinder_v and_o blind_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o malice_n shall_v we_o then_o say_v that_o they_o be_v all_o give_v to_o the_o devil_n who_o have_v not_o be_v baptize_v into_o the_o lord_n spirit_n and_o possess_v with_o a_o delight_n in_o the_o lord_n service_n then_o must_v we_o say_v that_o all_o hard_a heart_a miser_n wicked_a mind_a ruffian_n fickle_a brain_a yoongling_n and_o wind-wavering_a woman_n which_o have_v rather_o be_v play_v with_o their_o love_n or_o their_o child_n or_o else_o be_v disport_v in_o bravery_n and_o wantonness_n or_o be_v mumble_v a_o few_o pater-noster_n of_o old_a angel_n or_o new_o stuff_v barn_n then_o of_o god_n because_o thither_o come_v all_o the_o tribe_n to_o do_v service_n and_o sacrifice_n to_o the_o lord_n &_o therefore_o sometime_o it_o signify_v the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o all_o the_o member_n thereof_o as_o psal_n 51._o by_o these_o word_n i_o may_v note_v that_o although_o the_o minister_n have_v a_o private_a and_o a_o public_a charge_n to_o warn_v the_o people_n yet_o they_o must_v have_v a_o more_o special_a regard_n to_o the_o public_a place_n col._n 4._o 16._o isa._n 66._o 6._o the_o reason_n be_v first_o because_o christ_n be_v always_o present_a in_o the_o congregation_n principal_o mat._n 18._o 20._o and_o therefore_o if_o they_o have_v any_o love_n to_o their_o saviour_n there_o they_o must_v hear_v and_o see_v he_o again_o in_o the_o public_a ministry_n of_o the_o word_n be_v give_v the_o holy_a ghost_n gal._n 3._o 2._o so_o that_o if_o man_n will_v have_v the_o pledge_n of_o their_o eternal_a inheritance_n thither_o they_o must_v resort_v where_o he_o be_v free_o offer_v without_o money_n yea_o let_v they_o come_v from_o strength_n to_o strength_n that_o be_v be_v thy_o strength_n little_a or_o much_o use_v the_o same_o to_o come_v to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n there_o be_v no_o more_o dispensation_n for_o weakness_n then_o for_o health_n and_o therefore_o if_o thou_o will_v show_v thy_o obedience_n and_o thy_o zeal_n to_o of_o judgement_n increase_v old_a man_n grow_v careless_a through_o age_n young_a man_n grow_v dissolute_a through_o pleasure_n child_n wax_v wanton_a through_o evil_a education_n and_o almost_o all_o man_n wax_v worse_a and_o worse_a what_o be_v the_o church_n more_o regard_v than_o a_o alehouse_n or_o a_o preacher_n more_o esteem_v than_o a_o idol_n or_o a_o saint_n more_o honour_v than_o a_o devil_n or_o religion_n more_o love_v than_o atheisine_n or_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n more_o long_v after_o than_o a_o earthly_a inheritance_n no_o no_o truth_n yield_v to_o falsehood_n charity_n to_o envy_n quietness_n to_o contention_n sobriety_n to_o intemperancy_n law_n to_o unrighteousness_n faith_n to_o policy_n and_o christianity_n to_o infidelity_n helpe_n o_o you_o saint_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o lament_v this_o mischief_n although_o we_o can_v amend_v it_o put_v to_o your_o tear_n and_o your_o prayer_n that_o they_o may_v sound_v before_o god_n see_v god_n can_v any_o long_o be_v hear_v among_o man_n the_o reason_n of_o this_o doctrine_n be_v these_o first_o because_o god_n 1._o dwell_v in_o they_o that_o tremble_v at_o his_o word_n isa_n 66._o 2._o and_o again_o this_o fear_n and_o tremble_a be_v a_o most_o manifest_a sign_n 2_o of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o word_n heb._n 4._o 12._o so_o that_o where_o this_o tremble_a be_v want_v there_o can_v be_v no_o true_a devotion_n whatsoever_o diligence_n be_v use_v because_o the_o word_n can_v have_v any_o free_a passage_n in_o our_o soul_n for_o as_o a_o child_n care_v not_o for_o his_o master_n who_o he_o fear_v not_o so_o a_o man_n care_v not_o for_o the_o gospel_n when_o he_o tremble_v not_o yea_o on_o the_o other_o side_n we_o rebel_v against_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n and_o spurn_v his_o word_n with_o our_o foot_n when_o we_o suffer_v it_o not_o to_o go_v through_o our_o heart_n we_o read_v that_o og_n and_o sihon_n two_o great_a king_n will_v not_o suffer_v the_o people_n of_o israel_n to_o go_v through_o their_o country_n the_o which_o discourtesy_n cost_v they_o their_o life_n their_o land_n and_o their_o subject_n and_o all_o because_o they_o will_v not_o grant_v a_o pathway_n even_o so_o if_o we_o let_v not_o the_o word_n of_o god_n pierce_v clean_o through_o we_o and_o quiet_o with_o courtesy_n give_v it_o entertainment_n in_o our_o heart_n he_o will_v take_v they_o by_o force_n and_o give_v we_o to_o be_v a_o miserable_a spoil_n to_o devil_n if_o judas_n have_v have_v any_o grace_n when_o he_o hear_v our_o saviour_n curse_v that_o man_n that_o shall_v betray_v he_o he_o will_v never_o have_v go_v far_o but_o let_v his_o action_n fall_v but_o he_o do_v as_o our_o hearer_n do_v hear_v his_o own_o condemnation_n and_o not_o believe_v it_o and_o therefore_o they_o shall_v do_v as_o he_o do_v repent_v when_o it_o be_v too_o late_o give_v their_o life_n in_o stead_n of_o their_o ear_n and_o their_o blood_n in_o stead_n of_o obedience_n and_o yet_o alas_o alas_o all_o will_v not_o serve_v their_o turn_n the_o use_n hereof_o be_v these_o first_o seeing_z 1_o we_o must_v fear_v and_o tremble_v at_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n than_o it_o follow_v that_o which_o wrought_v they_o do_v so_o then_o much_o more_o ought_v we_o for_o who_o sake_n they_o be_v create_v let_v we_o then_o often_o meditate_v on_o the_o frame_n of_o the_o world_n the_o body_n can_v not_o read_v then_o meditate_v on_o it_o when_o thou_o be_v weary_a of_o meditation_n then_o turn_v to_o the_o creature_n and_o solace_v thyself_o in_o they_o as_o in_o a_o most_o pleasant_a garden_n of_o many_o sweet_a flower_n mark_v their_o diversity_n in_o colour_n strange_a in_o number_n infinite_a in_o make_v contrary_a and_o yet_o in_o use_n all_o one_o even_o for_o thy_o sake_n that_o thou_o may_v be_v for_o the_o lord_n glory_n mark_v their_o growth_n that_o thou_o may_v grow_v so_o and_o their_o death_n for_o thou_o shall_v die_v so_o and_o their_o spring_n for_o thou_o shall_v arise_v in_o the_o summer_n of_o all_o pleasure_n with_o they_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n merciful_a the_o second_o reason_n be_v take_v from_o 2_o the_o lord_n mercy_n and_o that_o therefore_o if_o they_o will_v repent_v he_o will_v pardon_v wherein_o i_o may_v tell_v you_o many_o thing_n worth_a the_o learning_n of_o the_o lord_n mercy_n and_o show_v you_o by_o many_o argument_n how_o the_o scripture_n in_o many_o place_n do_v express_v it_o sometime_o natural_o as_o to_o man_n and_o beast_n psal_n 36._o 6._o sometime_o to_o good_a and_o bad_a mat._n 5._o to_o his_o church_n through_o christ_n luc._n 1._o 78._o and_o all_o these_o he_o mean_v in_o this_o place_n when_o he_o say_v that_o god_n be_v merciful_a not_o simple_o through_o christ_n whereby_o he_o save_v his_o church_n but_o also_o through_o himself_o whereby_o he_o love_v all_o his_o creature_n from_o repentance_n hence_o observe_v that_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n must_v lead_v man_n to_o repentance_n 1._o sam._n 12._o 24._o the_o which_o be_v clean_o contrary_a to_o the_o course_n of_o the_o world_n which_o take_v it_o for_o a_o liberty_n of_o sin_n and_o make_v it_o not_o a_o of_o god_n must_v be_v as_o much_o terrify_v from_o sin_n with_o the_o sweet_a song_n of_o zion_n as_o with_o the_o loud_a thunder_n clap_v of_o sinai_n &_o be_v as_o subject_a to_o the_o lord_n censure_v in_o his_o sweet_a mercy_n as_o other_o in_o the_o fearful_a curse_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o let_v not_o our_o time_n of_o peace_n our_o healthy_a body_n our_o large_a possession_n death_n to_o heaven_n not_o to_o hell_n make_v no_o excuse_n for_o thy_o absence_n admit_v no_o delay_n for_o thy_o hindrance_n suffer_v no_o temptation_n for_o thy_o allurement_n and_o let_v not_o and_o persuade_v ourselves_o of_o this_o terror_n of_o god_n 2_o 2._o cor._n 5._o 11._o for_o except_v we_o consider_v before_o hand_n how_o the_o heaven_n shall_v be_v consume_v how_o the_o earth_n shall_v be_v burn_v how_o the_o world_n shall_v be_v end_v and_o how_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v manifest_v the_o gospel_n will_v be_v but_o a_o weak_a word_n and_o a_o idle_a tale_n unto_o we_o but_o if_o thou_o can_v believe_v the_o last_o judgement_n and_o with_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n behold_v it_o a_o far_o off_o and_o tremble_v at_o the_o secret_a meditation_n thereof_o than_o thou_o may_v easy_o feel_v the_o power_n of_o life_n unto_o life_n and_o happy_o forsake_v the_o sentence_n of_o death_n therefore_o evermore_o remember_v judgement_n at_o thy_o feast_n in_o thy_o bed_n on_o thy_o table_n in_o the_o morning_n at_o thy_o labour_n before_o thy_o sleep_n and_o with_o thy_o friend_n that_o thou_o and_o they_o be_v not_o of_o the_o kindred_n of_o the_o earth_n which_o shall_v wail_v and_o lament_v before_o the_o come_n of_o christ_n revel_v 1._o 7._o there_o will_v i_o plead_v with_o they_o have_v finish_v the_o gather_v together_o of_o the_o wicked_a into_o the_o place_n of_o judgement_n now_o it_o remain_v that_o we_o go_v on_o to_o the_o cause_n of_o their_o destruction_n which_o the_o lord_n here_o open_v as_o pleader_n do_v in_o their_o court_n at_o the_o law_n and_o therefore_o he_o say_v that_o he_o will_v plead_v with_o they_o for_o his_o people_n allude_v to_o the_o manner_n of_o worldly_a judgement_n so_o that_o here_o we_o may_v see_v that_o the_o lord_n be_v both_o judge_n &_o counsellor_n for_o his_o church_n which_o may_v great_o comfort_v we_o and_o discomfort_v our_o enemy_n for_o the_o lord_n who_o be_v to_o tally_n for_o we_o and_o eager_o against_o they_o have_v the_o whole_a law_n in_o his_o own_o hand_n but_o in_o this_o that_o he_o say_v judgement_n he_o will_v plead_v with_o they_o we_o may_v note_v that_o god_n will_v open_v all_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o wicked_a in_o judgement_n eccles_n 11._o 9_o for_o pleader_n will_v not_o omit_v any_o thing_n which_o may_v discredit_v their_o adversary_n or_o the_o cause_n against_o which_o they_o speak_v yea_o they_o will_v suspect_v those_o thing_n which_o they_o can_v gainsay_v and_o condemn_v those_o thing_n very_o peremptory_o which_o they_o can_v any_o way_n blemish_n in_o like_a sort_n the_o lord_n when_o he_o shall_v draw_v thou_o to_o judgement_n will_v there_o open_v all_o thy_o life_n and_o tell_v thy_o secret_a whoredom_n thy_o hide_a theft_n thy_o often_o blasphemy_n thy_o idle_a word_n thy_o vain_a expense_n thy_o proud_a gesture_n thy_o idle_a worship_n thy_o friend-pleasing_a vanity_n and_o all_o thy_o hypocrisy_n thy_o charity_n he_o will_v defame_v with_o vainglory_n thy_o prayer_n he_o will_v account_v abomination_n thy_o fast_n he_o will_v call_v dissemble_v and_o thy_o gentle_a nature_n shall_v be_v account_v a_o flatter_a virtue_n all_o this_o will_v he_o bring_v to_o judgement_n he_o will_v prove_v it_o by_o thy_o conscience_n he_o will_v condemn_v it_o by_o his_o gospel_n and_o he_o will_v punish_v it_o by_o condemnation_n oh_o then_o shall_v thy_o fault_n be_v write_v in_o thy_o forehead_n that_o all_o may_v know_v they_o and_o thy_o privy_a do_n blow_v with_o a_o trumpet_n that_o all_o may_v hear_v they_o and_o thy_o forswear_a sin_n open_v by_o a_o crier_n that_o all_o may_v loathe_v they_o oh_o wretched_a wretch_n which_o have_v rather_o abide_v this_o judgement_n of_o god_n then_o that_o which_o be_v in_o this_o life_n all_o thy_o fault_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n and_o discredit_v all_o thy_o virtue_n be_v they_o never_o so_o many_o or_o never_o so_o glorious_a think_v not_o that_o thy_o good_a deed_n shall_v overcome_v thy_o evil_a but_o as_o one_o blemish_n disfigure_v a_o whole_a body_n so_o one_o sin_n will_v disgrace_v a_o whole_a body_n of_o virtue_n the_o reason_n of_o this_o doctrine_n be_v lord_n family_n who_o they_o have_v scatter_v among_o the_o nation_n we_o have_v already_o show_v that_o one_o principal_a part_n of_o a_o captivity_n be_v the_o scatter_n and_o disperse_v abroad_o of_o the_o people_n into_o many_o country_n where_o they_o shall_v never_o gather_v strength_n or_o hope_n to_o return_v home_o again_o this_o be_v the_o first_o cause_n why_o the_o wicked_a be_v thus_o judge_v because_o they_o scatter_v abroad_o the_o seed_n of_o jacob_n that_o it_o may_v die_v and_o never_o grow_v for_o so_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n whereby_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o the_o wicked_a be_v near_a to_o destruction_n hell_n when_o they_o most_o of_o all_o triumph_n over_o the_o godly_a as_o here_o we_o may_v see_v the_o first_o cause_n of_o their_o condemnation_n be_v the_o scatter_n of_o israel_n so_o the_o lord_n affirm_v by_o the_o prophet_n esay_n 49._o 25._o that_o when_o the_o mighty_a be_v at_o the_o pray_v and_o the_o tyrant_n at_o the_o spoil_n then_o will_v the_o lord_n come_v and_o spoil_v they_o but_o deliver_v his_o child_n the_o lion_n and_o the_o bear_n that_o david_n slay_v may_v have_v escape_v with_o prey_n and_o life_n if_o they_o have_v not_o meddle_v with_o david_n lamb_n and_o so_o the_o wicked_a may_v escape_v damnation_n if_o they_o can_v refrain_v from_o bite_v of_o the_o lord_n sheep_n but_o see_v then_o they_o
