be_v swallow_v up_o with_o sorrow_n and_o grief_n no_o but_o humble_v ourselves_o for_o our_o sin_n we_o must_v remember_v for_o what_o we_o do_v suffer_v and_o rejoice_v and_o be_v glad_a in_o that_o behalf_n for_o though_o our_o outward_a man_n perish_v yet_o the_o inner_a man_n shall_v be_v reviue_v now_o because_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n to_o rejoice_v in_o grievous_a affliction_n proportion_n between_o our_o suffering_n and_o life_n eternal_a the_o affliction_n of_o this_o present_a life_n be_v not_o worthy_a of_o the_o glory_n which_o shall_v be_v show_v unto_o we_o rom._n 8._o 18._o the_o second_o reason_n be_v take_v from_o the_o example_n of_o the_o ancient_a prophet_n for_o so_o persecute_v they_o the_o prophet_n which_o be_v before_o you_o in_o this_o reason_n christ_n intend_v two_o thing_n first_o to_o teach_v his_o disciple_n and_o we_o that_o persecution_n for_o good_a cause_n be_v no_o new_a or_o strange_a thing_n second_o to_o comfort_v his_o disciple_n and_o servant_n in_o their_o suffering_n for_o that_o thereby_o they_o shall_v be_v make_v comformable_a to_o the_o ancient_a worthy_a prophet_n who_o be_v of_o old_a renown_a among_o man_n and_o be_v now_o glori_fw-la fied_a of_o god_n in_o heaven_n hereto_o we_o must_v compare_v the_o word_n of_o luke_n '_o speak_v to_o the_o same_o purpose_n 23._o for_o after_o this_o manner_n do_v the_o father_n to_o the_o prophet_n by_o father_n we_o must_v needs_o mean_v the_o ancient_a people_n of_o the_o jew_n for_o here_o he_o speak_v to_o his_o disciple_n and_o other_o that_o be_v jew_n by_o nation_n now_o hence_o observe_v a_o strange_a point_n to_o wit_n that_o the_o ancient_a prophet_n who_o be_v most_o worthy_a man_n of_o god_n be_v persecute_v in_o their_o time_n not_o so_o much_o by_o foreigner_n and_o enemy_n to_o religion_n as_o by_o those_o that_o be_v outward_o member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o professor_n of_o religion_n this_o may_v seem_v strange_a that_o man_n live_v in_o god_n church_n shall_v grow_v to_o this_o height_n of_o impiety_n to_o become_v persecutor_n of_o god_n saint_n but_o saint_n
though_o he_o be_v never_o so_o great_a a_o monarch_n in_o the_o world_n while_o he_o be_v out_o of_o god_n kingdom_n want_v righteousness_n and_o regeneration_n by_o jesus_n christ._n second_o this_o also_o must_v persuade_v every_o one_o of_o we_o to_o put_v in_o practice_v the_o former_a instruction_n endeavour_v above_o all_o thing_n to_o get_v god_n kingdom_n for_o ourselves_o for_o till_o we_o have_v part_n herein_o we_o can_v have_v no_o sound_a comfort_n in_o the_o use_n of_o god_n creature_n which_o necessary_o serve_v to_o our_o temporal_a life_n this_o reason_n alone_o if_o there_o be_v no_o more_o shall_v spur_v we_o on_o to_o all_o diligence_n in_o this_o duty_n what_o shame_n and_o grief_n be_v it_o to_o eat_v our_o bread_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n as_o thief_n and_o usurper_n do_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n and_o therefore_o let_v we_o give_v no_o rest_n unto_o our_o soul_n till_o we_o attain_v to_o some_o good_a assurance_n in_o this_o bless_a estate_n the_o way_n we_o must_v remember_v be_v by_o true_a conversion_n and_o regeneration_n and_o we_o shall_v discern_v ourselves_o to_o be_v regenerate_v by_o these_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o we_o to_o wit_n i._o a_o true_a touch_n of_o conscience_n regeneration_n for_o our_o sin_n both_o original_a and_o actual_a ii_o a_o godly_a sorrow_n and_o grief_n of_o heart_n for_o offend_v and_o displease_v god_n by_o our_o transgression_n iii_o a_o earnest_a desire_n or_o true_a spiritual_a hunger_n and_o thirst_n after_o christ_n and_o his_o righteousness_n testify_v by_o our_o constant_a and_o diligent_a use_n of_o those_o mean_n the_o word_n prayer_n and_o sacrament_n wherein_o god_n give_v grace_n and_o assurance_n of_o mercy_n iv._o a_o unfeigned_a turn_n unto_o god_n from_o all_o sin_n by_o new_a obedience_n have_v a_o constant_a purpose_n of_o heart_n not_o to_o sin_v and_o a_o godly_a endeavour_n in_o life_n to_o please_v god_n in_o all_o thing_n these_o be_v the_o mark_n of_o the_o new_a creature_n who_o have_v true_a title_n to_o god_n kingdom_n which_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o find_v in_o ourselves_o for_o our_o comfort_n in_o the_o use_n of_o god_n creature_n and_o if_o we_o find_v they_o in_o we_o our_o title_n be_v good_a not_o only_o to_o his_o creature_n but_o to_o his_o kingdom_n notwithstanding_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n by_o our_o former_a iniquity_n iv._o in_o this_o that_o temporal_a blessing_n be_v dependent_n on_o god_n kingdom_n 4_o we_o must_v learn_v contentation_n and_o patience_n in_o all_o temporal_a loss_n loss_n whatsoever_o they_o seek_v his_o kingdom_n principal_o do_v notable_o commend_v unto_o we_o the_o bountiful_a goodness_n of_o god_n for_o here_o we_o see_v he_o give_v to_o his_o child_n more_v they_o they_o we_o have_v daily_a experience_n in_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n which_o we_o do_v enjoy_v for_o when_o we_o pray_v for_o spiritual_a grace_n god_n give_v they_o unto_o we_o and_o many_o temporal_a blessing_n also_o this_o david_n confess_v psal._n 21._o 3._o thou_o do_v prevent_v i_o with_o liberal_a blessing_n and_o solomon_n find_v it_o to_o be_v true_a who_o ask_v only_o a_o wise_a &_o sun_n moon_n and_o star_n serve_v for_o the_o creature_n here_o below_o as_o herb_n and_o plant_n how_o do_v these_o serve_v for_o beast_n and_o fowl_n and_o all_o of_o they_o for_o the_o use_n of_o man_n as_o this_o prove_v against_o the_o atheist_n that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n so_o it_o show_v the_o sovereignty_n and_o most_o wise_a regiment_n of_o his_o kingdom_n when_o a_o man_n see_v a_o great_a army_n in_o good_a array_n and_o every_o one_o keep_v his_o place_n and_o stand_v constant_o he_o will_v present_o commend_v the_o wisdom_n and_o authority_n of_o the_o leader_n why_o then_o shall_v we_o not_o acknowledge_v the_o power_n and_o soverangntie_n of_o the_o almighty_a in_o that_o constant_a station_n of_o the_o creature_n in_o that_o sweet_a order_n which_o they_o observe_v from_o the_o creation_n second_o the_o terror_n &_o accusation_n of_o a_o guilty_a conscience_n do_v argue_v 2_o evident_o the_o absolute_a sovereignty_n of_o god_n kingdom_n for_o when_o a_o man_n have_v commit_v some_o grievous_a sin_n either_o against_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n or_o the_o write_a word_n of_o god_n though_o it_o be_v so_o secret_o that_o no_o man_n know_v of_o it_o yet_o will_v his_o conscience_n accuse_v and_o fright_v he_o which_o it_o will_v not_o do_v unless_o he_o be_v to_o answer_v for_o that_o fact_n to_o god_n the_o sovereign_a lord_n of_o al._n three_o man_n restrain_v we_o of_o these_o desire_n and_o enjoin_v we_o to_o renounce_v ourselves_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o salvation_n and_o all_o that_o be_v in_o we_o and_o to_o depend_v on_o a_o righteousness_n out_o of_o ourselves_o in_o the_o person_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v his_o obedience_n and_o suffering_n again_o we_o natural_o desire_v to_o enjoy_v god_n mercy_n by_o sense_n and_o feeling_n but_o the_o gospel_n restrain_v we_o of_o this_o kind_n of_o assurance_n which_o come_v by_o sense_n and_o feeling_n and_o enjoin_v we_o to_o hold_v and_o keep_v god_n mercy_n by_o believe_v only_o both_o in_o life_n and_o death_n though_o we_o have_v no_o sense_n thereof_o at_o all_o further_o the_o gospel_n renew_v the_o law_n for_o the_o manner_n of_o love_a for_o the_o moral_a law_n require_v that_o we_o shall_v love_v another_o as_o we_o do_v ourselves_o but_o the_o gospel_n require_v we_o to_o love_v one_o another_o as_o christ_n love_v we_o which_o be_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o love_n then_o the_o law_n require_v for_o christ_n love_v we_o more_o than_o himself_o for_o he_o give_v himself_o for_o we_o and_o so_o ought_v we_o to_o love_v even_o our_o enemy_n and_o thus_o we_o see_v how_o the_o gospel_n also_o restrain_v we_o from_o follow_v our_o own_o natural_a desire_n and_o injoin_v we_o to_o walk_v in_o the_o narrow_a way_n to_o life_n whereto_o as_o also_o to_o the_o restraint_n of_o the_o law_n we_o must_v apply_v ourselves_o our_o thought_n word_n and_o deed_n so_o do_v we_o walk_v in_o the_o straight_a way_n that_o lead_v unto_o life_n but_o if_o we_o any_o way_n exempt_v ourselves_o according_a to_o our_o natural_a desire_n from_o any_o of_o these_o restraint_n we_o then_o walk_v in_o the_o broad_a way_n that_o lead_v to_o destruction_n ii_o duty_n see_v we_o must_v be_v content_a with_o the_o straitnes_n of_o the_o way_n patient_o we_o learn_v that_o when_o god_n lay_v any_o cross_n or_o affliction_n upon_o we_o we_o must_v not_o repine_v or_o grudge_v but_o bear_v the_o same_o with_o patience_n and_o suffer_v god_n to_o break_v we_o of_o our_o own_o will_n rest_v content_v in_o ourselves_o with_o the_o will_n of_o god_n alone_o for_o this_o be_v grace_n and_o a_o sure_a testimony_n that_o we_o walk_v in_o the_o strait_a way_n to_o life_n iii_o duty_n in_o the_o case_n of_o confession_n and_o profession_n of_o true_a religion_n trâ—dâ—_n when_o we_o be_v call_v thereto_o we_o must_v be_v content_a to_o forsake_v good_n friend_n yea_o and_o life_n itself_o rather_o than_o by_o enjoy_v they_o suffer_v ourselves_o to_o be_v drive_v out_o of_o this_o straight_a way_n to_o life_n my_o life_n say_v paul_n be_v not_o dear_a unto_o i_o so_o that_o i_o may_v fulfull_a my_o course_n mith_o joy_n act._n 20._o 24._o last_o whosoever_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o the_o pride_n of_o his_o own_o heart_n be_v too_o stately_a to_o stoop_v under_o the_o straitâ—â—â—oâ—e_n that_o lead_v to_o the_o way_n of_o life_n he_o therefore_o that_o will_v walk_v 〈◊〉_d this_o straight_a way_n must_v cast_v away_o all_o pride_n of_o heart_n and_o humble_v himself_o for_o his_o own_o sin_n make_v himself_o nothing_o in_o must_v be_v above_o all_o thing_n to_o come_v into_o the_o way_n of_o life_n everlasting_a so_o much_o the_o word_n strive_v import_v it_o be_v say_v that_o when_o john_n first_o preach_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n suffer_v violence_n and_o the_o violent_a take_v it_o by_o force_n that_o 12._o be_v their_o be_v such_o forwardness_n and_o zeal_n in_o they_o that_o hear_v john_n preach_v to_o procure_v to_o themselves_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n that_o they_o strive_v most_o earnest_o to_o get_v in_o david_n swear_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o vow_v a_o vow_n 5._o unto_o the_o broad_a way_n their_o condemnation_n sleep_v not_o but_o make_v post_o have_v upon_o they_o &_o if_o they_o continue_v and_o go_v forward_o in_o this_o carelsse_n course_n they_o shall_v as_o certain_o perish_v in_o god_n wrath_n as_o the_o philistines_n do_v by_o the_o hand_n of_o samson_n and_o therefore_o as_o they_o desire_v to_o escape_v damnation_n so_o let_v they_o be_v careful_a for_o ever_o and_o again_o 14_o in_o righteousness_n shall_v thou_o be_v establish_v and_o be_v far_o from_o oppression_n this_o therefore_o shall_v move_v all_o ungodly_a person_n to_o repent_v and_o child_n in_o this_o world_n of_o god_n himself_o and_o all_o good_a man_n and_o in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v full_o manifest_v so_o to_o be_v that_o this_o be_v true_a happiness_n will_v soon_o appear_v by_o the_o view_n of_o the_o state_n of_o every_o child_n of_o god_n for_o they_o be_v unite_v unto_o christ_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n by_o which_o they_o be_v regenerate_v and_o in_o christ_n they_o be_v adopt_v for_o son_n and_o daughter_n and_o so_o enjoy_v god_n special_a grace_n and_o favour_n now_o hereupon_o they_o be_v king_n child_n have_v god_n for_o their_o father_n who_o love_v they_o more_o tender_o than_o any_o earthly_a parent_n can_v love_v their_o own_o child_n second_o they_o have_v christ_n for_o their_o brother_n and_o so_o be_v heir_n annex_v with_o he_o have_v heaven_n and_o earth_n for_o their_o possession_n â—_o in_o he_o they_o be_v make_v king_n and_o priest_n unto_o god_n and_o shall_v be_v 1._o judge_n of_o the_o world_n at_o the_o last_o day_n yea_o they_o have_v the_o 14._o holy_a angel_n for_o minister_a spirit_n to_o attend_v upon_o their_o person_n for_o their_o defence_n from_o the_o power_n of_o the_o enemy_n which_o far_o surpass_v the_o dignity_n of_o any_o guard_n of_o man_n on_o earth_n whatsoever_o all_o thing_n work_v together_o for_o the_o best_a unto_o they_o their_o cross_n and_o affliction_n be_v no_o curse_n but_o fatherly_a trial_n and_o chastisement_n yea_o their_o sin_n be_v turn_v to_o their_o good_a to_o they_o death_n be_v no_o death_n but_o a_o sweet_a sleep_n unto_o their_o body_n and_o a_o straight_a passage_n for_o their_o soul_n into_o eternal_a glory_n yea_o in_o the_o act_n of_o death_n they_o have_v the_o comfort_n of_o life_n in_o the_o joy_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o angel_n ready_a when_o breath_n depart_v to_o carry_v their_o soul_n to_o heaven_n if_o this_o be_v true_a happiness_n to_o be_v call_v god_n child_n then_o they_o that_o use_n live_v after_o their_o own_o wicked_a lust_n void_a of_o all_o care_n to_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n be_v miserable_a and_o accurse_a for_o they_o be_v the_o child_n of_o the_o devil_n serve_v he_o in_o the_o work_n of_o sin_n and_o express_v his_o image_n in_o ungodliness_n and_o worldly_a lust_n it_o stand_v they_o therefore_o in_o hand_n if_o they_o have_v any_o care_n of_o true_a happiness_n to_o labour_v after_o regeneration_n whereby_o forsake_v the_o lust_n and_o course_n of_o their_o former_a ignorance_n and_o embrace_v and_o obey_v sincere_o the_o word_n of_o life_n they_o may_v become_v god_n child_n and_o so_o happy_a second_o have_v thou_o receive_v this_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n whereby_o thou_o 2_o be_v incline_v to_o have_v peace_n with_o all_o man_n and_o to_o seek_v for_o peace_n between_o god_n and_o thy_o own_o conscience_n yea_o between_o the_o lord_n and_o other_o then_o comfort_v thyself_o thou_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n these_o motion_n come_v from_o grace_n flesh_n and_o blood_n bring_v forth_o no_o such_o fruit_n labour_v therefore_o to_o maintain_v these_o good_a motion_n with_o all_o other_o pledge_n of_o thy_o adoption_n and_o so_o shall_v thou_o
