this_o poor_a church_n and_o nation_n o_o that_o all_o man_n will_v yet_o at_o length_n after_o all_o the_o evil_n and_o warning_n which_o god_n have_v send_v among_o we_o serious_o consider_v their_o oath_n in_o a_o matter_n mere_o indifferent_a much_o less_o holy_a righteous_a and_o true_a as_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o covenant_n be_v all_o yield_v but_o that_o neither_o force_n fear_v nor_o any_o other_o indirect_a way_n can_v be_v allege_v for_o the_o annul_n of_o these_o engagement_n both_o the_o precede_a treaty_n the_o just_a and_o necessary_a reason_n and_o all_o other_o cicumstance_n do_v most_o evident_o confirm_v so_o that_o the_o whole_a world_n may_v just_o wonder_v that_o these_o man_n who_o both_o in_o profession_n and_o practice_n do_v plain_o evidence_n their_o profane_a indifferency_n and_o regardless_o violation_n of_o all_o oath_n wherein_o interest_n do_v not_o concur_v shall_v by_o the_o manifest_a patronise_a of_o all_o perfidy_n whereof_o no_o the_o shameful_a disgrace_n of_o the_o king_n himself_o who_o neither_o conscience_n honour_n honesty_n nor_o the_o example_n of_o his_o father_n can_v teach_v the_o constancy_n of_o the_o most_o and_o publish_v that_o declaration_n at_o dumfermling_n without_o any_o more_o special_a condescendence_n which_o be_v impossible_a but_o oh_o that_o the_o world_n do_v also_o know_v and_o consider_v in_o public_a upon_o the_o throne_n under_o the_o crown_n in_o plain_a parliament_n and_o also_o in_o private_a conference_n which_o many_o yet_o alive_a can_v sufficient_o attest_v by_o which_o this_o poor_a church_n and_o nation_n be_v ensnare_v and_o precipitate_v into_o all_o the_o sin_n and_o misery_n that_o since_o the_o year_n 1650._o unto_o this_o day_n have_v afflict_v we_o however_o the_o lord_n who_o see_v and_o hear_v do_v also_o consider_v to_o require_v it_o and_o the_o violence_n do_v to_o himself_o in_o many_o of_o his_o suffer_a member_n who_o partly_o even_o in_o the_o the_o wicked_a apostasy_n in_o these_o time_n 4._o we_o can_v but_o observe_v that_o after_o the_o prevail_a and_o during_o the_o time_n of_o the_o english_a usurpation_n these_o only_a for_o the_o most_o part_n remain_v mindful_a of_o and_o faithful_a to_o the_o king_n who_o be_v faithful_a and_o steadfast_a in_o the_o covenant_n when_o as_o these_o who_o former_o do_v and_o at_o present_a do_v pretend_v so_o high_o for_o the_o king_n in_o prejudice_n both_o of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o holy_a covenant_n do_v in_o their_o slavish_a compliance_n abandon_v all_o allegiance_n and_o of_o all_o their_o action_n and_o though_o many_o of_o they_o do_v now_o pretend_v to_o have_v be_v sufferer_n yet_o it_o be_v well_o know_v that_o if_o they_o have_v have_v the_o half_a of_o these_o temptation_n which_o the_o faithful_a upon_o the_o account_n of_o their_o allegiance_n do_v constant_o resist_v the_o king_n interest_n for_o their_o part_n have_v be_v for_o ever_o forget_v as_o it_o be_v by_o many_o of_o they_o open_o renounce_v and_o abjure_v and_o that_o the_o main_a reason_n of_o their_o then_o seem_v and_o pretend_a loyalty_n be_v the_o improbability_n of_o credit_n with_o and_o acceptance_n from_o the_o usurper_n because_o of_o their_o know_a naughtiness_n have_v thus_o declare_v the_o lord_n great_a work_n and_o glorious_a presence_n among_o we_o in_o all_o these_o mercy_n and_o judgement_n which_o he_o show_v upon_o we_o and_o these_o strange_a vicissitude_n &_o alternation_n sometime_o of_o his_o grace_n &_o power_n engage_a we_o with_o heart_n &_o hand_n unto_o himself_o sometime_o of_o our_o own_o heart_n wickedness_n and_o unstedfastness_n again_o cause_v we_o to_o apostatise_v and_o backslide_v from_o his_o holy_a command_n and_o covenant_n which_o dare_v the_o space_n of_o a_o hundred_o year_n from_o the_o year_n 1560_o have_v in_o the_o holy_a and_o wise_a providence_n of_o god_n pass_v over_o we_o that_o by_o all_o these_o great_a temptation_n which_o our_o eye_n have_v see_v and_o the_o sign_n and_o wonder_n which_o he_o have_v wrought_v we_o may_v know_v that_o the_o lord_n be_v our_o god_n and_o jesus_n christ_n our_o king_n and_o that_o by_o all_o these_o thing_n he_o only_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v we_o for_o a_o peculiar_a people_n unto_o himself_o in_o the_o glorious_a light_n of_o his_o truth_n and_o beauty_n of_o his_o holiness_n far_o exalt_v above_o many_o other_o nation_n we_o be_v now_o come_v to_o the_o year_n 1660_o wherein_o though_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v according_a to_o his_o glorious_a sovereignty_n by_o his_o own_o immediate_a hand_n to_o break_v the_o yoke_n of_o our_o oppressor_n restore_v our_o covenant_v king_n law_n and_o liberty_n and_o to_o make_v all_o faction_n party_n and_o interest_n not_o only_o to_o cede_fw-la unto_fw-la but_o unanimous_o to_o conspire_v for_o this_o bless_a restitution_n yet_o how_o evident_o have_v it_o since_o appear_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o give_v unto_o we_o a_o heart_n to_o perceive_v eye_n to_o see_v nor_o ear_n to_o hear_v unto_o that_o very_a day_n we_o need_v not_o here_o resume_v the_o king_n be_v most_o solemn_a and_o indissoluble_a engagement_n which_o we_o have_v so_o late_o mention_v nor_o add_v that_o
certain_a faithful_a minister_n persuade_v and_o bring_v out_o in_o the_o full_a assurance_n of_o most_o certain_a victory_n and_o that_o their_o cause_n be_v such_o that_o upon_o the_o event_n they_o can_v venture_v their_o salvation_n yet_o the_o contrary_n be_v most_o certain_o know_v &_o that_o they_o come_v out_o for_o the_o most_o part_n most_o voluntary_o and_o of_o their_o own_o accord_n think_v it_o their_o duty_n as_o one_o of_o they_o in_o his_o testimony_n do_v declare_v to_o appear_v for_o and_o help_v the_o lord_n against_o the_o mighty_a and_o that_o though_o they_o have_v and_o still_o retain_v a_o most_o firm_a persuasion_n of_o the_o justice_n of_o the_o lord_n cause_n and_o covenant_n and_o a_o very_a confident_a assurance_n that_o the_o lord_n will_v arise_v and_o own_v it_o to_o the_o utter_a confusion_n of_o his_o adversary_n yet_o know_v that_o time_n and_o season_n be_v in_o the_o lord_n hand_n and_o that_o the_o time_n have_v already_o be_v when_o such_o who_o have_v indignation_n and_o who_o heart_n be_v against_o the_o holy_a covenant_n do_v prosper_v and_o by_o arm_n pollute_v the_o sanctuary_n of_o strength_n and_o place_v the_o abomination_n that_o make_v desolate_a wherein_o though_o the_o people_n that_o do_v know_v their_o god_n be_v strong_a and_o do_v exploit_n yet_o do_v they_o fall_v by_o the_o sword_n and_o by_o flame_n and_o by_o captivity_n and_o by_o spoil_v many_o day_n these_o man_n do_v neither_o limit_n the_o holy_a one_o nor_o balance_v their_o resolution_n upon_o the_o assurance_n of_o future_a event_n yea_o the_o fear_n and_o apprehension_n of_o these_o many_o visible_a sign_n attend_v this_o action_n whereby_o the_o lord_n be_v stand_v controversy_n and_o continue_a displeasure_n against_o the_o land_n for_o fearful_a breach_n of_o covenant_n and_o the_o many_o horrible_a sin_n that_o have_v ensue_v which_o then_o more_o than_o ever_o be_v discover_v both_o in_o the_o actual_a opposition_n of_o many_o and_o faint_a withdraw_a of_o other_o of_o who_o better_a thing_n be_v look_v for_o do_v just_o make_v they_o conceive_v that_o as_o the_o lord_n who_o have_v ever_o glorify_v his_o own_o name_n will_v also_o now_o glorify_v it_o both_o in_o their_o active_a and_o passive_a testimony_n a_o seal_n which_o his_o work_n and_o cause_n have_v not_o hitherto_o so_o visible_o have_v and_o that_o they_o be_v rather_o thereto_o call_v then_o to_o be_v the_o land_n deliverer_n for_o which_o all_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n may_v think_v with_o tremble_a great_a judgement_n be_v yet_o ordain_v 5._o that_o among_o the_o many_o observable_a providence_n of_o god_n whereby_o he_o bring_v this_o action_n to_o its_o period_n their_o turn_n from_o lanerk_n towards_o edinburgh_n and_o leave_v the_o west_n special_o these_o part_n where_o many_o faithful_a man_n be_v prepare_v for_o a_o conjunction_n do_v bear_v the_o very_a eminent_a character_n of_o the_o lord_n work_n and_o purpose_n which_o he_o have_v since_o make_v manifest_a and_o be_v the_o occasion_n of_o the_o proscribe_v of_o several_a both_o minister_n and_o gentleman_n as_o we_o shall_v hereafter_o mention_v 6._o that_o as_o the_o louthian-man_n be_v very_o active_a in_o appear_v against_o this_o faithful_a company_n so_o after_o the_o conflict_n they_o be_v very_o vigilant_a and_o inhuman_a to_o take_v and_o spoil_v all_o such_o flyer_n as_o they_o rencountre_v a_o sin_n which_o no_o doubt_n by_o reason_n of_o its_o great_a aggravation_n the_o lord_n will_v require_v with_o great_a severity_n then_o that_o of_o edom_n obad._n 12._o etc._n etc._n who_o rejoice_v over_o the_o child_n of_o judah_n in_o the_o day_n of_o their_o destruction_n and_o lay_v hand_n on_o their_o substance_n in_o the_o day_n of_o their_o calamity_n who_o stand_v in_o the_o cross_a way_n to_o cut_v off_o such_o as_o do_v escape_v and_o deliver_v up_o these_o that_o do_v remain_v in_o the_o day_n of_o distress_n and_o therefore_o he_o be_v threaten_v by_o the_o lord_n that_o for_o his_o violence_n against_o his_o brother_n shame_n shall_v cover_v he_o and_o he_o shall_v be_v cut_v off_o for_o ever_o thus_o we_o have_v see_v the_o indignation_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o most_o dreadful_a and_o astonish_a of_o all_o judgement_n even_o his_o suffering_n and_o cause_v the_o righteous_a to_o fall_v before_o the_o wicked_a in_o deliver_v the_o soul_n of_o his_o turtle_n dove_n unto_o the_o multitude_n of_o the_o wicked_a his_o name_n unto_o reproach_n and_o blasphemy_n his_o strength_n into_o captivity_n and_o his_o glory_n into_o the_o enemy_n hand_n a_o providence_n that_o may_v just_o move_v our_o astonishment_n to_o a_o great_a height_n then_o that_o of_o josuah_n chap_n 7._o v._n 9_o oh_o lord_n what_o will_v thou_o do_v unto_o thy_o great_a name_n and_o how_o terrible_a be_v the_o charge_n and_o succeed_a judgement_n which_o these_o thing_n do_v denounce_v but_o the_o lord_n who_o in_o wrath_n remember_v mercy_n make_v both_o judgement_n and_o mercy_n his_o people_n song_n and_o it_o be_v to_o his_o enemy_n alone_o that_o a_o cup_n without_o mixture_n be_v pour_v out_o as_o the_o thing_n which_o follow_v will_v declare_v the_o arcbishop_n of_o st._n andrews_n have_v cause_v celebrat_o the_o report_n of_o this_o victory_n with_o almost_o as_o many_o gun_n from_o the_o castle_n as_o there_o be_v man_n slay_v in_o the_o field_n and_o as_o if_o the_o 40_o have_v be_v 40000_o infidel_n the_o prisoner_n be_v bring_v in_o and_o secure_v we_o can_v but_o here_o mention_v the_o ready_a and_o charitable_a relief_n which_o many_o good_a people_n in_o edinburgh_n do_v then_o extend_v to_o they_o certain_o it_o be_v go_v up_o for_o a_o memorial_n before_o god_n and_o shall_v have_v a_o return_n but_o who_o can_v express_v the_o malice_n of_o that_o antichristian_a spirit_n rage_v both_o in_o the_o arch-prelate_n and_o his_o dependent_n which_o misery_n itself_o do_v not_o satiate_v and_o therefore_o they_o do_v so_o exclaim_v against_o this_o poor_a expression_n of_o humanity_n as_o preposterous_a and_o savour_v of_o disaffection_n that_o even_o some_o of_o their_o own_o complice_n do_v condemn_v they_o for_o it_o the_o council_n fall_v immediate_o to_o the_o examination_n of_o the_o prisoner_n they_o remit_v first_o 10_o thereafter_o 14_o to_o the_o justice_n to_o be_v arraign_v or_o rather_o condemn_v as_o traitor_n they_o have_v first_o determine_v and_o prescribe_v the_o very_a manner_n of_o their_o execution_n and_o about_o the_o same_o time_n the_o commissioner_n go_v west_n with_o some_o other_o impower_v for_o that_o effect_n do_v likewise_o at_o air_n and_o glasgow_n condemn_v other_o sixteen_o these_o thing_n we_o join_v together_o because_o both_o their_o indictment_n manner_n of_o trial_n doom_n and_o execution_n be_v the_o same_o except_z in_o so_o far_o as_o shall_v be_v note_v the_o indictment_n and_o charge_n of_o treason_n exhibit_v against_o all_o consist_v of_o two_o head_n and_o crime_n deduce_v from_o old_a and_o late_a act_n of_o parliament_n and_o aggravate_v by_o many_o circumstance_n viz._n rise_v and_o gather_v in_o arm_n and_o renew_v the_o covenant_n without_o and_o against_o the_o king_n authority_n and_o consent_n every_o one_o be_v particular_a accession_n be_v libel_v from_o and_o prove_v by_o his_o own_o confession_n before_o the_o council_n this_o place_n may_v require_v a_o large_a digression_n for_o answer_v the_o crime_n object_v and_o clear_v the_o innocency_n of_o the_o lord_n witness_n but_o see_v the_o precede_a narration_n do_v not_o only_o furnish_v all_o argument_n thereto_o requisite_a but_o warrant_v they_o by_o precedent_n beyond_o contradiction_n it_o shall_v suffice_v now_o to_o observe_v 1._o that_o god_n the_o fountain_n of_o all_o power_n and_o author_n of_o all_o right_n as_o wherever_o he_o have_v grant_v to_o any_o creature_n a_o be_v he_o have_v also_o arm_v it_o with_o a_o love_n and_o power_n of_o self-preservation_n suitable_a to_o its_o capacity_n so_o much_o more_o where_o unto_o a_o be_v he_o have_v superad_v a_o right_n as_o in_o all_o rational_a creature_n which_o can_v be_v violate_v but_o both_o by_o force_n and_o injury_n have_v he_o grant_v both_o the_o power_n and_o right_n of_o self-defence_n which_o be_v real_o one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n with_o it_o and_o in_o effect_n nothing_o else_o but_o that_o divine_a impress_n and_o rational_a instinct_n whereby_o the_o very_a course_n of_o nature_n be_v uphold_v so_o inseparable_a from_o the_o be_v and_o right_o of_o the_o creature_n that_o it_o never_o cease_v except_o where_o by_o the_o sovereign_n will_v and_o law_n of_o god_n the_o right_o be_v first_o annul_v and_o the_o be_v may_v be_v destroy_v which_o position_n be_v the_o clear_a and_o true_a foundation_n of_o all_o rule_n and_o righteousness_n and_o even_o of_o the_o be_v of_o all_o thing_n it_o may_v just_o be_v
