this_o dispensation_n to_o inflict_v temporal_a punishment_n on_o such_o that_o neglect_v the_o salvation_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o he_o reserve_v his_o wrath_n to_o another_o world_n and_o therefore_o let_v none_o think_v though_o they_o escape_v his_o judgement_n here_o that_o they_o shall_v escape_v his_o judgement_n and_o wrath_n hereafter_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a the_o day_n of_o common_a calamity_n and_o desolate_v judgement_n escape_v that_o will_v come_v upon_o the_o earth_n there_o be_v beloved_n a_o dismal_a hour_n speak_v of_o in_o god_n word_n that_o be_v not_o yet_o come_v yet_o no_o doubt_n it_o be_v very_o near_o in_o which_o but_o a_o few_o shall_v escape_v i_o be_o afraid_a many_o good_a man_n who_o have_v be_v remiss_a and_o negligent_a in_o and_o about_o the_o great_a concern_v of_o christ_n and_o of_o their_o own_o soul_n shall_v not_o escape_v i_o mean_v
think_v repentance_n a_o harsh_a doctrine_n no_o no_o it_o be_v sweet_a and_o bless_a tiding_n to_o hear_v that_o there_o be_v repentance_n vouchsafe_v to_o poor_a sinner_n yea_o for_o the_o worst_a of_o sinner_n beside_o be_v not_o repentance_n the_o very_a first_o doctrine_n jesus_n christ_n preach_v when_o he_o enter_v upon_o his_o ministry_n he_o call_v upon_o man_n to_o repent_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n he_o declare_v there_o be_v a_o way_n find_v out_o for_o pardon_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o what_o can_v so_o kind_o and_o sweet_o excite_v or_o stir_v up_o sinner_n to_o repentance_n as_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o infinite_a mercy_n and_o pardon_v grace_n of_o god_n through_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o jesus_n christ_n his_o mercy_n only_o melt_v and_o break_v the_o hard_a heart_n of_o guilty_a criminal_n 3._o to_o preach_v the_o combination_n and_o threaten_n of_o god_n wrath_n and_o vengeance_n against_o all_o ungodly_a and_o impenitent_a sinner_n who_o slight_a and_o neglect_v the_o salvation_n of_o the_o gospel_n can_v be_v no_o legal_a doctrine_n 1._o because_o the_o gospel_n abound_v with_o they_o yea_o and_o more_o fearful_a threaten_n than_o those_o be_v under_o the_o law_n for_o the_o one_o be_v threat_n of_o temporal_a punishment_n but_o the_o other_o be_v eternal_a even_o the_o denunciation_n of_o god_n wrath_n in_o hell_n for_o ever_o 2._o because_o of_o the_o greatness_n of_o that_o mercy_n and_o divine_a grace_n and_o goodness_n which_o such_o who_o sin_n under_o the_o gospel_n do_v abuse_v and_o tread_v under_o their_o foot_n 3._o to_o show_v the_o justice_n headship_n and_o authority_n of_o jesus_n christ_n who_o be_v god_n as_o well_o as_o man_n that_o so_o all_o man_n may_v stand_v in_o awe_n of_o he_o and_o dread_a and_o fear_v he_o because_o of_o his_o great_a love_n and_o goodness_n extend_v through_o his_o suffering_n for_o sin_n and_o endure_v the_o heavy_a wrath_n of_o god_n for_o we_o and_o for_o many_o other_o reason_n which_o you_o have_v hear_v 4._o because_o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v not_o only_o render_v god_n as_o a_o just_a revenger_n but_o also_o as_o a_o merciful_a redeemer_n not_o only_o as_o a_o judge_n to_o pass_v sentence_n but_o as_o a_o gracious_a sovereign_n ready_a to_o give_v forth_o pardon_v to_o all_o convict_a break_a and_o self-condemned_n rebel_n the_o law_n threaten_v death_n but_o afford_v no_o offer_n of_o life_n on_o any_o term_n that_o can_v be_v attain_v to_o therefore_o no_o encouragement_n give_v by_o it_o to_o sinner_n to_o humble_v themselves_o it_o command_v perfect_a obedience_n but_o afford_v no_o strength_n to_o perform_v it_o pronounce_v the_o sentence_n against_o we_o but_o produce_v no_o pardon_n for_o we_o it_o command_v we_o to_o trust_v in_o god_n but_o reveal_v not_o a_o mediator_n who_o be_v the_o immediate_a object_n of_o faith_n and_o trust_n 5._o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v a_o manifestation_n of_o god_n goodness_n as_o a_o father_n threaten_v his_o child_n from_o that_o love_n and_o bowel_n he_o have_v to_o it_o that_o so_o it_o may_v not_o feel_v the_o lash_n of_o his_o rod_n and_o anger_n and_o o_o how_o be_v gospel-threatning_n mix_v with_o allure_a motive_n and_o endear_n argument_n and_o persuasion_n intimate_v how_o ready_a god_n be_v to_o pass_v by_o our_o offence_n if_o we_o submit_v ourselves_o to_o he_o and_o accept_v of_o the_o offer_v of_o his_o grace_n and_o favour_n if_o such_o preach_n of_o wrath_n therefore_o be_v legal_a i_o must_v acknowledge_v my_o great_a ignorance_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o jesus_n christ_n beside_o how_o long_o be_v the_o threaten_n of_o the_o gospel_n defer_v before_o execute_v the_o contemner_n of_o the_o law_n die_v present_o as_o well_o as_o man_n able_a perfect_o to_o keep_v the_o law_n if_o so_o why_o do_v the_o apostle_n say_v 3._o what_o the_o law_n can_v not_o do_v in_o that_o it_o be_v weak_a through_o the_o flesh_n god_n send_v his_o son_n etc._n etc._n beside_o if_o there_o have_v be_v a_o law_n that_o can_v have_v give_v life_n very_o say_v paul_n righteousness_n shall_v have_v be_v by_o the_o law_n and_o again_o he_o say_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n no_o man_n be_v 21._o justify_v and_o if_o righteousness_n come_v by_o the_o law_n then_o be_v christ_n dead_a in_o vain_a christ_n it_o seem_v by_o what_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o curse_n thereby_o incur_v no_o doctrine_n can_v cast_v high_a contempt_n upon_o christ_n and_o invalidate_v his_o suffer_v and_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o in_o he_o than_o this_o doctrine_n do_v 2._o such_o preach_v a_o legal_a doctrine_n who_o preach_v up_o obedience_n by_o we_o to_o the_o law_n or_o gospel_n either_o as_o the_o procure_n or_o move_v cause_n and_o condition_n of_o our_o justification_n and_o eternal_a life_n 3._o such_o also_o preach_v a_o legal_a doctrine_n who_o preach_v up_o wrath_n and_o divine_a vengeance_n to_o scare_v or_o frighten_v man_n out_o of_o their_o sin_n and_o as_o if_o by_o the_o bare_a leave_v and_o forsake_v of_o sin_n man_n may_v escape_v death_n and_o wrath._n such_o a_o doctrine_n as_o reverend_a dr._n owen_n note_n may_v fill_v a_o unregenerate_a man_n with_o horror_n and_o servile_a fear_n whereby_o as_o bond-servant_n or_o slave_n by_o the_o whip_n of_o this_o doctrine_n they_o may_v be_v force_v to_o break_v off_o from_o some_o gross_a act_n of_o sin_n and_o perform_v some_o outward_a duty_n of_o religion_n which_o otherwise_o they_o be_v unwilling_a to_o do_v for_o as_o it_o be_v not_o from_o love_n to_o god_n nor_o from_o faith_n in_o christ_n so_o they_o find_v no_o delight_n nor_o sweetness_n in_o it_o but_o be_v often_o remiss_a and_o see_v cause_n to_o doubt_v of_o the_o sincerity_n of_o their_o obedience_n they_o fall_v under_o terror_n and_o slavish_a fear_n they_o only_o act_v from_o a_o enlighten_v conscience_n and_o not_o from_o faith_n or_o renew_v grace_n these_o man_n neither_o love_v the_o law_n nor_o gospel_n though_o they_o be_v force_v to_o keep_v up_o in_o some_o degree_n of_o obedience_n to_o it_o 4._o such_o preach_v a_o legal_a doctrine_n that_o affirm_v man_n be_v own_o faith_n and_o inherent_a righteousness_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o christ_n merit_n be_v part_n of_o our_o righteousness_n to_o justification_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o that_o christ_n have_v procure_v or_o merit_v a_o mild_a law_n of_o grace_n of_o faith_n and_o sincere_a obedience_n in_o the_o room_n of_o the_o law_n of_o perfect_a obedience_n which_o law_n of_o sinless_a obedience_n christ_n have_v give_v to_o god_n a_o full_a recompense_n for_o our_o breach_n of_o he_o have_v take_v that_o law-away_a and_o that_o so_o far_o as_o we_o faithful_o
