and_o proportion_n all_o the_o mean_n that_o lead_v to_o it_o and_o the_o sole_a intention_n design_n and_o end_v of_o god_n in_o menace_v and_o threaten_a punishment_n be_v to_o deter_v and_o fright_v from_o sin_n if_o the_o end_n be_v considerable_a enough_o the_o punishment_n threaten_v can_v never_o be_v too_o great_a beside_o it_o argue_v great_a malice_n when_o great_a threaten_n can_v deter_v however_o it_o become_v god_n to_o threaten_v and_o punish_v too_o as_o a_o god_n sin_n be_v indignity_n and_o god_n anger_n be_v his_o defence_n if_o mortal_a man_n kill_v the_o body_n temporal_o in_o their_o anger_n it_o be_v like_o the_o immortal_a god_n to_o damn_v the_o soul_n eternal_o in_o he_o in_o fine_a what_o if_o in_o a_o age_n wherein_o hypothesis_n be_v take_v i_o shall_v offer_v this_o which_o yet_o what_o i_o have_v propose_v already_o evince_v to_o be_v more_o than_o so_o that_o perhaps_o the_o constitution_n of_o the_o other_o world_n may_v require_v that_o what_o ever_o state_n be_v in_o it_o be_v perpetual_a as_o the_o make_v of_o this_o require_v that_o all_o thing_n in_o it_o shall_v be_v otherwise_o and_o consequent_o that_o it_o be_v as_o agreeable_a and_o natural_a that_o all_o punishment_n as_o well_o as_o all_o reward_n shall_v be_v eternal_a in_o the_o future_a life_n as_o that_o all_o in_o this_o shall_v be_v temporal_a but_o when_o i_o say_v it_o may_v be_v as_o agreeable_a and_o as_o natural_a that_o all_o punishment_n in_o the_o other_o life_n shall_v be_v eternal_a as_o that_o all_o reward_n i_o will_v not_o have_v you_o to_o conceive_v i_o think_v that_o to_o be_v a_o demonstration_n which_o be_v general_o current_n and_o pass_v with_o the_o most_o for_o one_o namely_o that_o because_o the_o reward_n of_o heaven_n be_v eternal_a therefore_o the_o punishment_n of_o hell_n be_v also_o so_o i_o acknowledge_v that_o it_o will_v not_o follow_v for_o to_o do_v good_a for_o so_o it_o be_v to_o reward_n or_o to_o remunerate_v it_o carry_v in_o it_o more_o agreeabless_a and_o more_o congruity_n to_o the_o divine_a essence_n and_o be_v a_o emanation_n from_o it_o more_o connatural_a and_o consequent_o more_o free_a than_o to_o punish_v be_v or_o to_o inflict_v evil_a this_o be_v call_v his_o strange_a work_n which_o that_o be_v not_o it_o be_v for_o this_o reason_n that_o god_n be_v so_o much_o more_o benign_a and_o liberal_a as_o the_o holy_a scripture_n plain_o show_v we_o in_o assign_v large_a reward_n than_o he_o be_v severe_a and_o rigorous_a in_o ordain_v dreadful_a punishment_n for_o if_o as_o he_o be_v say_v to_o do_v in_o the_o second_o command_n he_o visit_v the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o father_n upon_o the_o child_n unto_o the_o three_o and_o four_o generation_n of_o they_o that_o hate_v he_o he_o show_v mercy_n to_o the_o thousand_o of_o they_o that_o love_n he_o so_o wide_a a_o difference_n there_o be_v the_o allotment_n both_o of_o reward_n and_o punishment_n depend_v on_o the_o divine_a will_n and_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d or_o lenity_n moderation_n propensity_n to_o favour_n be_v the_o natural_a virtue_n of_o the_o will._n and_o thus_o much_o by_o way_n of_o demonstration_n of_o this_o great_a truth_n that_o there_o be_v no_o inequality_n or_o improportion_n in_o the_o punishment_n ordain_v though_o endless_a to_o crime_n or_o sin_n but_o great_a equality_n and_o proportion_n and_o that_o the_o sovereign_a rector_n be_v neither_o arbitrarious_a and_o wilful_a nor_o unjust_a but_o both_o wise_a and_o righteous_a in_o assign_v they_o what_o i_o be_o next_o engage_v to_o perform_v be_v to_o evince_v he_o good_a therein_o as_o well_o as_o just_o and_o that_o in_o ordain_v and_o threaten_v endless_a and_o eternal_a punishment_n to_o sin_n he_o have_v as_o much_o consideration_n of_o the_o humane_a interest_n and_o concern_v as_o of_o his_o own_o but_o before_o i_o may_v proceed_v to_o argue_v and_o evince_v this_o verity_n it_o will_v be_v necessary_a for_o a_o clear_a and_o full_a state_v of_o it_o to_o distinguish_v between_o the_o threaten_n of_o eternal_a punishment_n and_o the_o inflict_a of_o they_o which_o i_o note_v here_o because_o i_o hold_v myself_o oblige_v but_o to_o demonstrate_v now_o that_o there_o be_v goodness_n in_o ordain_v and_o in_o threaten_v of_o eternal_a punishment_n as_o hereafter_o i_o shall_v prove_v that_o there_o be_v great_a justice_n and_o no_o want_n of_o goodness_n in_o the_o inflict_a on_o lay_v they_o on_o and_o those_o who_o merit_v they_o and_o who_o can_v question_v the_o goodness_n and_o benignity_n of_o god_n appoint_v and_o threaten_v unto_o man_n eternal_a punishment_n if_o he_o serious_o consider_v that_o his_o do_v so_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a for_o the_o whole_a world_n to_o regulate_v it_o and_o to_o keep_v it_o in_o order_n by_o aw_v man_n mind_n and_o by_o repress_v their_o exorbitant_a and_o wild_a emotion_n and_o consequent_o by_o prepare_v and_o qualify_a of_o they_o for_o instruction_n in_o and_o for_o performance_n of_o the_o common_a office_n and_o duty_n of_o the_o humane_a life_n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o divine_a the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v the_o begin_n of_o wisdom_n say_v solomon_n know_v the_o terror_n of_o the_o lord_n we_o persuade_v man_n say_v the_o apostle_n plato_n in_o his_o politic_n make_v the_o establishment_n of_o punishment_n in_o another_o life_n fundamental_a to_o government_n in_o this_o prota●_n and_o even_o mr._n hobbs_n acknowledge_v 5._o that_o the_o punishment_n institute_v before_o sin_n serve_v to_o the_o benefit_n of_o mankind_n because_o it_o keep_v man_n in_o peaceable_a and_o virtuous_a conversation_n by_o the_o terror_n and_o pythagoras_n know_v as_o much_o for_o
