in_o apprehension_n or_o at_o least_o in_o deep_a meditation_n of_o death_n when_o it_o be_v dress_v with_o all_o such_o terror_n and_o material_a consideration_n that_o it_o look_v like_o the_o king_n of_o terror_n and_o at_o least_o make_v our_o spirit_n full_a of_o fear_n and_o of_o sobriety_n 3._o this_o measure_n must_v be_v careful_o take_v without_o the_o allay_n of_o foolish_a principle_n or_o a_o careless_a spirit_n or_o extravagant_a confidence_n of_o personal_a predestination_n or_o of_o be_v in_o any_o sect_n but_o with_o the_o common_a measure_n which_o christian_n measure_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o he_o be_v in_o probability_n of_o pardon_n have_v by_o that_o learn_v by_o what_o measure_n he_o must_v prepare_v himself_o to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n 4._o some_o person_n be_v of_o a_o timorous_a conscience_n and_o apt_a to_o irregular_a and_o
unreasonable_a fear_n and_o nothing_o but_o a_o single_a ray_n from_o heaven_n can_v give_v they_o any_o portion_n of_o comfort_n and_o these_o man_n never_o trust_v to_o any_o thing_n they_o do_v or_o to_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v do_v for_o they_o and_o fear_v by_o no_o other_o measure_n but_o by_o consideration_n of_o the_o intolerable_a misery_n which_o they_o shall_v suffer_v if_o they_o make_v use_n of_o this_o rule_n by_o the_o proportion_n of_o that_o judgement_n of_o charity_n which_o themselves_o make_v of_o other_o and_o in_o what_o case_n and_o in_o what_o disposition_n they_o in_o the_o best_a disposition_n he_o also_o may_v communicate_v with_o most_o comfort_n because_o he_o do_v it_o with_o most_o holiness_n 6._o but_o the_o least_o measure_n of_o repentance_n less_o than_o which_o can_v dispose_v we_o to_o the_o worthy_a reception_n of_o the_o holy_a mystery_n be_v these_o 1._o as_o soon_o as_o we_o be_v smite_v with_o the_o terror_n of_o a_o afflict_a conscience_n and_o apprehend_v the_o evil_a of_o sin_n or_o fear_v the_o divine_a judgement_n and_o upon_o that_o account_n resolve_v to_o leave_v our_o sin_n we_o be_v not_o instant_o worthy_a and_o fit_a to_o communicate_v attrition_n be_v not_o a_o competent_a disposition_n to_o the_o bless_a sacrament_n because_o although_o it_o may_v be_v the_o gate_n and_o entrance_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n yet_o it_o can_v be_v no_o more_o unless_o there_o be_v love_n in_o it_o unless_o it_o be_v contrition_n it_o be_v not_o a_o state_n of_o favour_n and_o grace_n but_o a_o disposition_n to_o it_o he_o that_o do_v not_o yet_o love_n god_n can_v communicate_v with_o christ_n and_o he_o that_o resolve_v against_o sin_n out_o of_o fear_n only_o or_o temporal_a regard_n have_v give_v too_o great_a testimony_n that_o he_o love_v the_o sin_n still_o and_o will_v return_v to_o it_o when_o that_o which_o hinder_v he_o shall_v be_v remove_v faith_n work_v by_o charity_n be_v the_o wedding_n our_o contrition_n unless_o it_o be_v in_o the_o case_n of_o repentance_n only_o for_o single_a act_n of_o sin_n in_o this_o case_n to_o oppose_v a_o good_a to_o a_o evil_a a_o act_n of_o proportionable_a abstinence_n to_o a_o single_a act_n of_o intemperance_n for_o which_o we_o be_v real_o sorrowful_a and_o as_o we_o suppose_v hearty_o trouble_v and_o confess_v it_o and_o pray_v for_o pardon_n may_v be_v admit_v as_o a_o competent_a testimonial_n that_o this_o sorrow_n be_v real_a and_o this_o repentance_n be_v contrition_n because_o it_o do_v as_o much_o for_o virtue_n as_o in_o the_o instance_n it_o do_v for_o vice_n always_o provide_v that_o whatsoever_o aggravation_n or_o accidental_a grandeur_n be_v in_o the_o sin_n as_o scandal_n deliberation_n malice_n mischief_n hardness_n delight_n or_o obstinacy_n be_v also_o proportionable_o account_v for_o in_o the_o reckon_n of_o the_o repentance_n but_o if_o the_o penitent_a return_n from_o a_o habit_n or_o state_n of_o sin_n he_o will_v find_v it_o a_o hard_a work_n to_o quit_v all_o his_o old_a affection_n to_o sin_n and_o to_o place_v it_o upon_o god_n entire_o and_o therefore_o he_o must_v stay_v for_o more_o argument_n than_o one_o or_o a_o few_o single_a act_n of_o grace_n not_o only_o because_o a_o few_o may_v proceed_v from_o many_o cause_n accidental_o and_o not_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n but_o also_o because_o his_o love_n and_o habitual_a desire_n of_o sin_n must_v be_v natural_o extinguish_v by_o many_o contrary_a act_n of_o virtue_n and_o till_o these_o do_v enter_v the_o old_a love_n
