common_a fate_n of_o traveller_n and_o we_o must_v be_v content_v to_o take_v thing_n as_o we_o find_v they_o and_o not_o look_v to_o have_v every_o thing_n just_a to_o our_o mind_n but_o all_o these_o difficulty_n and_o inconvenience_n will_v short_o be_v over_o and_o after_o a_o few_o day_n will_v be_v quite_o forget_v and_o be_v to_o we_o as_o if_o they_o never_o have_v be_v and_o when_o sin_n be_v the_o only_a wall_n of_o separation_n between_o you_o and_o heaven_n which_o be_v once_o demolish_v you_o may_v enter_v into_o it_o without_o any_o interruption_n and_o take_v possession_n of_o all_o its_o glory_n so_o that_o if_o you_o think_v the_o loss_n of_o heaven_n will_v be_v no_o trouble_n to_o you_o in_o the_o other_o world_n because_o it_o be_v such_o a_o heaven_n as_o your_o deprave_a soul_n will_v be_v averse_a to_o you_o be_v infinite_o mistake_v for_o though_o you_o will_v be_v averse_a to_o it_o yet_o your_o own_o conscience_n will_v tell_v you_o that_o if_o you_o will_v you_o may_v have_v conquer_v that_o aversation_n as_o well_o as_o those_o bless_a spirit_n that_o do_v enjoy_v it_o and_o that_o if_o you_o have_v do_v so_o you_o may_v have_v be_v infinite_o a_o obstinate_a rebel_n from_o happiness_n he_o will_v choose_v to_o prostitute_v the_o honour_n of_o his_o law_n and_o government_n and_o commit_v a_o outrage_n upon_o the_o rectitude_n and_o purity_n of_o his_o own_o nature_n for_o so_o long_o as_o he_o be_v a_o pure_a god_n he_o can_v but_o be_v displease_v with_o impure_a soul_n and_o so_o long_o as_o he_o be_v a_o wise_a governor_n he_o can_v but_o be_v offend_v with_o those_o that_o trample_v upon_o his_o law_n so_o that_o before_o he_o can_v admit_v a_o wicked_a soul_n into_o heaven_n he_o must_v have_v extinguish_v all_o his_o natural_a antipathy_n to_o sin_n and_o stifle_v his_o just_a resentment_n of_o our_o wilful_a affront_v to_o his_o authority_n when_o therefore_o we_o can_v find_v any_o reason_n to_o imagine_v that_o god_n be_v no_o enemy_n to_o sin_n and_o that_o he_o have_v no_o regard_n of_o his_o own_o authority_n then_o and_o not_o till_o then_o we_o may_v have_v some_o pretence_n to_o presume_v upon_o go_v to_o heaven_n without_o mortification_n and_o amendment_n but_o suppose_v this_o hindrance_n be_v remove_v and_o that_o god_n be_v so_o easy_a as_o to_o be_v induce_v to_o prefer_v the_o happiness_n of_o a_o wicked_a soul_n before_o the_o honour_n of_o his_o government_n and_o the_o purity_n of_o his_o nature_n yet_o still_o there_o be_v a_o invincible_a obstacle_n behind_o that_o render_v her_o future_a felicity_n impossible_a and_o that_o be_v that_o it_o can_v be_v without_o a_o plain_a contradiction_n to_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n for_o as_o i_o have_v show_v you_o already_o the_o genius_n and_o temper_n of_o a_o wicked_a soul_n be_v whole_o repugnant_a to_o all_o the_o felicity_n of_o the_o other_o world_n so_o that_o if_o they_o be_v set_v before_o she_o she_o will_v not_o be_v able_a to_o enjoy_v they_o but_o must_v be_v force_v to_o pine_v and_o famish_v amid_o all_o that_o plenty_n of_o delight_n there_o be_v not_o one_o viand_n in_o all_o
spring_v up_o in_o their_o mind_n and_o arise_v high_a and_o high_o proportionable_o as_o their_o progress_n be_v in_o virtue_n and_o true_a goodness_n which_o be_v a_o plain_a evidence_n that_o these_o hope_n and_o desire_n be_v natural_a to_o we_o and_o that_o they_o be_v interweave_v by_o the_o great_a creator_n in_o the_o frame_n and_o constitution_n of_o our_o soul_n now_o how_o can_v it_o consist_v with_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n to_o implant_v such_o desire_n and_o hope_n in_o our_o nature_n and_o then_o to_o withhold_v from_o they_o the_o only_a object_n that_o can_v suit_n and_o satisfy_v they_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o recreation_n to_o he_o to_o sit_v above_o in_o the_o heaven_n and_o behold_v the_o work_n of_o his_o hand_n spend_v itself_o in_o weary_a struggle_n towards_o he_o and_o gasp_v all_o the_o while_o it_o continue_v in_o be_v after_o a_o happiness_n it_o shall_v never_o enjoy_v as_o for_o other_o being_n we_o see_v they_o have_v no_o natural_a desire_n in_o vain_a the_o good_a god_n have_v so_o order_v thing_n that_o there_o be_v object_n in_o nature_n apportion_v to_o all_o their_o natural_a appetite_n but_o if_o there_o be_v no_o state_n of_o happiness_n reserve_v for_o good_a man_n in_o the_o other_o world_n we_o be_v by_o a_o natural_a principle_n most_o strong_o incline_v to_o that_o which_o we_o can_v never_o attain_v to_o as_o if_o god_n have_v purposely_o frame_v we_o with_o such_o inclination_n that_o we_o may_v be_v perpetual_o torment_v between_o those_o two_o passion_n desire_v and_o despair_n a_o earnest_a propension_n after_o a_o future_a happiness_n and_o a_o utter_a incapacity_n of_o ever_o enjoy_v it_o as_o if_o nature_n itself_o whereby_o all_o other_o being_n be_v dispose_v to_o their_o perfection_n do_v serve_v only_o in_o mankind_n to_o make_v they_o miserable_a and_o which_o be_v more_o considerable_a as_o if_o virtue_n which_o be_v the_o perfection_n of_o nature_n do_v only_o contribute_v to_o our_o infelicity_n by_o raise_v in_o we_o desire_n and_o expectation_n which_o without_o a_o future_a happiness_n must_v be_v for_o ever_o baffle_v and_o disappoint_v for_o if_o there_o be_v no_o future_a happiness_n either_o we_o may_v know_v it_o or_o we_o may_v not_o if_o we_o may_v not_o know_v it_o why_o shall_v we_o think_v that_o which_o reflect_v so_o much_o dishonour_v upon_o god_n viz._n that_o he_o have_v create_v in_o we_o desire_n and_o expectation_n only_o to_o mock_v and_o tantalise_v they_o but_o if_o we_o may_v know_v it_o then_o do_v these_o desire_n and_o expectation_n seem_v to_o be_v create_v in_o we_o on_o purpose_n to_o torment_v we_o for_o for_o what_o other_o end_n can_v we_o desire_v to_o be_v eternal_o happy_a who_o be_v only_o bring_v forth_o into_o the_o light_n to_o be_v ever_o long_o extinguish_v and_o shut_v up_o in_o everlasting_a darkness_n the_o consideration_n of_o which_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o exceed_a torture_n and_o affliction_n to_o we_o iii_o that_o there_o be_v a_o future_a happiness_n reserve_v for_o good_a man_n be_v evident_a from_o the_o justice_n and_o equity_n of_o the_o divine_a providence_n that_o god_n be_v a_o most_o just_a and_o righteous_a governor_n be_v acknowledge_v by_o all_o that_o believe_v there_o be_v a_o god_n and_o that_o he_o rule_v and_o govern_v the_o world_n and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o than_o his_o justice_n must_v first_o or_o last_o discover_v itself_o in_o distribute_v reward_n and_o punishment_n to_o man_n according_a as_o they_o obey_v or_o violate_v the_o law_n of_o his_o government_n for_o what_o justice_n can_v he_o express_v in_o govern_v the_o world_n if_o he_o rule_v at_o random_n if_o he_o never_o make_v any_o difference_n between_o the_o good_a and_o the_o bad_a but_o reward_n and_o punish_v his_o subject_n promiscuous_o without_o any_o distinction_n between_o the_o loyal_a and_o rebellious_a and_o yet_o in_o the_o ordinary_a course_n of_o divine_a providence_n in_o this_o world_n we_o see_v little_a or_o no_o distinction_n make_v between_o they_o but_o as_o the_o wise_a man_n have_v observe_v eccl._n ix_o 2._o all_o thing_n come_v alike_o to_o all_o so_o that_o he_o can_v know_v god_n love_n or_o hatred_n by_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v before_o we_o nay_o many_o time_n we_o see_v the_o wicked_a as_o the_o psalmist_n describe_v they_o flourish_v like_o a_o green_a bay-tree_n psal._n xxxvii_o 35._o whilst_o the_o righteous_a be_v sore_o oppress_v and_o crush_v under_o the_o triumphal_a chariot_n of_o their_o barbarous_a enemy_n so_o that_o be_v there_o no_o other_o state_n of_o thing_n but_o what_o we_o see_v before_o we_o it_o will_v be_v impossible_a for_o we_o to_o give_v any_o tolerable_a account_n of_o the_o just_a retribution_n of_o the_o divine_a providence_n for_o if_o when_o we_o have_v all_o act_v our_o part_n upon_o this_o stage_n of_o time_n we_o be_v to_o lie_v down_o together_o and_o sleep_v for_o ever_o in_o the_o dust_n how_o many_o million_o of_o good_a man_n be_v there_o that_o have_v think_v nothing_o too_o dear_a for_o god_n and_o have_v not_o only_o sacrifice_v their_o lust_n but_o their_o life_n and_o fortune_n to_o his_o service_n who_o will_v have_v no_o other_o recompense_n for_o so_o do_v but_o a_o miserable_a life_n and_o a_o woeful_a death_n and_o a_o obscure_a and_o dishonourable_a grave_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a how_o many_o million_o of_o million_o of_o wicked_a man_n be_v there_o who_o whole_a life_n have_v be_v nothing_o but_o one_o continue_a act_n of_o rebellion_n against_o god_n who_o have_v blaspheme_v his_o honour_n and_o affront_v his_o authority_n and_o open_o contemn_v all_o the_o law_n of_o his_o government_n and_o yet_o will_v undergo_v no_o other_o punishment_n for_o so_o do_v but_o only_o to_o live_v prosperous_o to_o die_v quiet_o and_o then_o to_o be_v glorious_o enshrine_v in_o monument_n of_o marble_n and_o can_v we_o think_v this_o and_o at_o the_o same_o time_n believe_v that_o there_o be_v a_o righteous_a providence_n which_o superintend_v the_o affair_n of_o the_o world_n certain_o if_o not_o to_o govern_v this_o material_a world_n and_o to_o put_v thing_n into_o such_o a_o regular_a course_n as_o may_v be_v suitable_a to_o their_o nature_n and_o the_o operation_n for_o which_o they_o be_v design_v will_v argue_v some_o defect_n of_o wisdom_n in_o god_n then_o doubtless_o not_o to_o compensate_a virtue_n and_o vice_n and_o adjust_a thing_n suitable_o to_o their_o qualification_n but_o thus_o cross_o to_o couple_v prosperity_n with_o vice_n and_o misery_n with_o virtue_n will_v argue_v he_o deficient_a both_o in_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n and_o justice._n and_o perhaps_o it_o will_v be_v no_o less_o expedient_a with_o epicurus_n to_o deny_v all_o providence_n than_o to_o ascribe_v to_o it_o such_o defect_n it_o be_v less_o unworthy_a of_o the_o divine_a nature_n to_o neglect_v the_o universe_n altogether_o than_o to_o administer_v humane_a affair_n with_o so_o much_o injustice_n and_o irregularity_n so_o that_o either_o we_o must_v deny_v providence_n or_o which_o be_v worse_o deny_v the_o justice_n of_o it_o or_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v a_o future_a state_n wherein_o all_o thing_n shall_v be_v adjust_v and_o good_a man_n crown_v with_o the_o reward_n of_o their_o obedience_n and_o the_o wicked_a undergo_v the_o punishment_n of_o their_o own_o folly_n for_o this_o we_o be_v sure_a of_o that_o the_o judge_n of_o all_o the_o world_n will_v do_v righteous_o and_o that_o first_o or_o last_o he_o will_v distribute_v his_o reward_n and_o punishment_n according_a to_o the_o merit_n and_o demerit_n of_o his_o subject_n and_o therefore_o because_o we_o see_v he_o do_v not_o ordinary_o do_v it_o in_o this_o world_n we_o have_v great_a reason_n to_o conclude_v that_o he_o will_v do_v it_o effectual_o in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v four_o and_o last_o that_o there_o be_v a_o state_n of_o future_a happiness_n prepare_v for_o good_a man_n be_v evident_a from_o the_o revelation_n of_o his_o will_n which_o god_n have_v make_v to_o we_o by_o jesus_n christ._n and_o this_o i_o confess_v be_v the_o most_o conclude_a argument_n of_o all_o as_o for_o the_o former_a argument_n they_o render_v the_o case_n so_o high_o probable_a that_o this_o at_o least_o must_v be_v acknowledge_v that_o we_o have_v far_o more_o reason_n to_o believe_v and_o expect_v a_o future_a happiness_n than_o we_o have_v to_o doubt_v or_o despair_v of_o it_o but_o as_o for_o this_o last_o it_o put_v all_o out_o of_o question_n and_o leave_v we_o no_o pretence_n of_o reason_n why_o we_o shall_v doubt_v or_o suspect_v it_o for_o eternal_a happiness_n and_o salvation_n be_v the_o great_a blessing_n which_o our_o saviour_n have_v promise_v we_o to_o encourage_v we_o to_o perseverance_n in_o welldoing_a and_o in_o that_o everlasting_a gospel_n which_o he_o preach_v to_o the_o
