great_a difficulty_n in_o serve_v god_n after_o this_o sublime_a and_o heavenly_a manner_n for_o this_o purpose_n those_o that_o will_v serve_v god_n aright_o must_v consider_v their_o own_o disposition_n that_o they_o may_v be_v able_a aright_o to_o meet_v with_o their_o own_o defect_n therefore_o they_o must_v know_v that_o the_o evil_a whereby_o they_o be_v draw_v from_o serve_v god_n after_o this_o most_o divine_a manner_n proceed_v from_o sin_n which_o have_v weaken_v the_o soul_n and_o subdue_v it_o to_o itself_o for_o if_o sin_n have_v not_o interpose_v itself_o we_o shall_v have_v do_v every_o good_a thing_n with_o much_o facility_n but_o sin_n once_o arryve_v in_o the_o soul_n all_o our_o desire_n will_n and_o appetite_n be_v become_v so_o dissolute_a disorder_a and_o rebellious_a by_o that_o grievous_a special_a disease_n arise_v from_o sin_n that_o now_o loathe_v that_o which_o be_v good_a we_o scarce_o love_v affect_v or_o desire_v any_o thing_n save_o the_o most_o abject_a worth_a less_o and_o vicious_a thing_n forget_v that_o infinite_a good_a unto_o which_o we_o be_v create_v as_o the_o thing_n wherein_o we_o have_v neither_o relish_n nor_o savour_n and_o hence_o proceed_v the_o confusion_n and_o perturbation_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o we_o feel_v in_o ourselves_o so_o much_o distract_v from_o the_o true_a god_n whereunto_o we_o be_v create_v that_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v absolute_o and_o only_o good_a be_v cast_v off_o we_o incline_v ever_o and_o greedy_o follow_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a yet_o must_v we_o know_v that_o howsoever_o this_o sin_n have_v make_v such_o a_o slaughter_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n that_o there_o be_v not_o one_o friend_n leave_v to_o take_v arm_n against_o it_o yet_o do_v not_o our_o obligation_n cease_v from_o bind_v we_o to_o do_v what_o be_v our_o duty_n and_o for_o which_o we_o come_v into_o this_o world_n for_o albeit_o this_o great_a infirmity_n do_v so_o enfeeble_v we_o that_o we_o do_v all_o good_a thing_n with_o great_a difficulty_n yet_o do_v it_o not_o make_v we_o altogether_o so_o impotent_a but_o that_o we_o be_v capable_a of_o grace_n and_o divine_a favour_n whereby_o to_o repair_v this_o our_o former_a overthrow_n and_o destruction_n beside_o we_o must_v observe_v that_o by_o so_o much_o more_o do_v we_o grow_v to_o a_o admirable_a disposition_n of_o serve_v god_n aright_o which_o disposition_n have_v ever_o remain_v in_o the_o soul_n unto_o all_o good_a thing_n if_o sin_n have_v not_o disease_v it_o by_o how_o much_o more_o we_o shall_v have_v our_o appetite_n and_o desire_n repair_v and_o dispose_v which_o by_o sin_n be_v former_o indispose_v and_o he_o shall_v have_v they_o repair_v who_o with_o a_o attentive_a care_n and_o profound_a consideration_n of_o the_o thing_n we_o speak_v of_o shall_v direct_v they_o all_o to_o the_o lord_n with_o a_o repugnancy_n to_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v without_o the_o will_n of_o this_o lord_n and_o a_o follow_v of_o all_o such_o remedy_n as_o be_v here_o describe_v and_o in_o that_o degree_n wherein_o any_o shall_v obtain_v this_o in_o the_o same_o shall_v he_o be_v advance_v here_o in_o sanctity_n and_o afterward_o in_o glory_n and_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o herein_o one_o may_v so_o profit_v by_o assiduity_n and_o diligence_n as_o that_o he_o may_v do_v all_o thing_n with_o great_a faclity_n and_o delight_n to_o which_o he_o shall_v be_v the_o more_o easy_o advance_v if_o he_o often_o and_o attentive_o read_v these_o instruction_n 5_o instruction_n that_o we_o have_v in_o our_o body_n and_o soul_n sufficient_a mean_n for_o the_o reparation_n of_o this_o decay_n and_o ruin_n if_o they_o be_v stir_v up_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n as_o we_o have_v both_o body_n and_o soul_n so_o we_o have_v in_o both_o of_o they_o instrument_n wherewith_o to_o work_v for_o as_o the_o body_n have_v foot_n to_o walk_v hand_n to_o work_n mouth_n to_o speak_v and_o the_o like_a so_o the_o soul_n have_v the_o understanding_n wherewith_o to_o know_v the_o will_n wherewith_o to_o desire_v and_o diverse_a other_o faculty_n of_o the_o appetite_n but_o it_o must_v be_v observe_v that_o the_o more_o excellent_a the_o worker_n be_v together_o with_o the_o instrument_n so_o much_o more_o worthy_a be_v the_o work_n so_o that_o all_o thing_n concur_v to_o the_o act_n be_v suitable_a corporal_a action_n have_v so_o much_o more_o excellency_n in_o they_o by_o how_o much_o the_o instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n concur_v to_o the_o act_n be_v more_o excellent_a now_o that_o be_v call_v a_o singular_a instrument_n which_o to_o the_o production_n of_o the_o act_n be_v move_v by_o a_o good_a end_n therefore_o the_o most_o excellent_a instrument_n be_v the_o understanding_n and_o the_o will_n which_o can_v be_v move_v of_o god_n alone_o as_o we_o have_v say_v in_o the_o second_o instruction_n therefore_o of_o small_a worth_n be_v corporal_a thing_n which_o do_v not_o so_o proceed_v and_o this_o be_v it_o that_o saint_n paul_n say_v 4._o 1._o tim._n 4._o bodily_a labour_n profit_v little_a but_o the_o action_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v of_o another_o kind_n namely_o because_o of_o themselves_o they_o may_v be_v of_o great_a profit_n as_o if_o one_o exercise_v his_o understanding_n shall_v consider_v how_o base_a and_o abject_a the_o honour_n of_o this_o world_n be_v and_o of_o what_o value_n those_o thing_n which_o god_n command_v be_v and_o how_o unspeakable_a that_o glory_n be_v to_o which_o we_o aspire_v also_o to_o know_v how_o one_o may_v moderate_v his_o passion_n and_o the_o like_a again_o if_o one_o exercise_v himself_o in_o his_o will_n love_v that_o which_o he_o know_v be_v good_a and_o refuse_v that_o be_v evil_a such_o refusal_n of_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v very_o profitable_a albeit_o the_o body_n be_v very_o idle_a for_o by_o such_o exercise_n will_v be_v produce_v excellent_a habit_n and_o the_o evil_a habit_n destroy_v which_o thing_n of_o itself_o be_v very_o laudable_a albeit_o do_v for_o the_o only_a love_n of_o virtue_n as_o philosopher_n do_v yet_o much_o more_o be_v in_o a_o christian_n who_o have_v faith_n but_o most_o of_o all_o if_o in_o every_o work_n we_o join_v faith_n with_o our_o intention_n actual_o direct_v unto_o god_n hence_o may_v it_o be_v observe_v how_o much_o every_o one_o ought_v to_o be_v exercise_v in_o the_o action_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o thing_n he_o may_v do_v whether_o he_o be_v employ_v in_o body_n or_o no_o in_o every_o time_n and_o place_n so_o that_o speak_v with_o another_o in_o any_o temporal_a affair_n yet_o may_v he_o in_o soul_n work_v by_o love_a god_n recal_v to_o mind_n some_o of_o his_o work_n this_o may_v seem_v difficult_a to_o he_o that_o have_v not_o attain_v the_o habit_n thereof_o yet_o custom_n will_v make_v it_o easy_a as_o we_o must_v remember_v that_o virtue_n be_v practise_v about_o difficult_a thing_n therefore_o violence_n be_v to_o be_v use_v to_o the_o will_n that_o thou_o may_v become_v a_o industrious_a workman_n to_o do_v singular_a thing_n with_o facility_n which_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o attempt_v no_o marvel_n be_v it_o that_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v more_o devout_a towards_o god_n see_v he_o be_v ever_o ready_a to_o assist_v thy_o desire_n unto_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o to_o withstand_v thy_o proneness_n to_o evil_a so_o that_o thou_o do_v right_o use_v the_o mean_n and_o be_v sure_a that_o if_o thou_o desire_v on_o earth_n to_o be_v a_o great_a and_o excellent_a friend_n and_o servant_n of_o god_n thou_o shall_v the_o soon_o attain_v unto_o it_o by_o how_o much_o thou_o do_v daily_o more_o and_o more_o use_v these_o instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n thy_o understanding_n and_o will_n at_o all_o time_n and_o place_n and_o this_o be_v it_o which_o advance_v the_o saint_n of_o god_n to_o so_o much_o glory_n in_o heaven_n the_o neglect_n whereof_o be_v so_o unblamable_a on_o earth_n see_v then_o our_o high_a glory_n consist_v herein_o for_o the_o most_o part_n that_o we_o work_v by_o these_o instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o our_o ruin_n in_o the_o neglect_n of_o this_o exercise_n let_v we_o see_v what_o course_n we_o must_v take_v who_o have_v as_o yet_o be_v even_o liveless_a to_o use_v these_o instrument_n of_o the_o foul_a and_o that_o we_o may_v begin_v with_o the_o understanding_n leave_v the_o will_n to_o the_o next_o instruction_n we_o will_v premise_v this_o theological_a and_o philosophical_a fundamental_a rule_n that_o our_o natural_a appetite_n do_v natural_o desire_v that_o to_o which_o it_o be_v incline_v &_o seem_v pleasant_a to_o it_o not_o stand_v need_n of_o any_o thing_n to_o help_v or_o invite_v unto_o it_o but_o rather_o necessary_o &_o as_o it_o be_v coact_o desire_v it_o but_o so_o do_v not_o the_o will_v work_v burr_n first_o
consult_v with_o reason_n and_o find_v that_o the_o thing_n be_v convenient_a for_o it_o it_o be_v then_o free_o move_v to_o will_n and_o desire_v it_o therefore_o the_o philosopher_n say_v that_o nothing_o be_v desire_v that_o be_v not_o foreknow_v whence_o we_o collect_v that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o we_o have_v in_o our_o understanding_n be_v like_o a_o light_n whereby_o the_o will_n may_v see_v what_o it_o ought_v to_o desire_v this_o therefore_o be_v presuppose_v we_o must_v chief_o regard_v that_o to_o do_v well_o and_o perfect_o the_o understanding_n do_v not_o err_v in_o knowledge_n which_o bce_v have_v present_o the_o will_n be_v move_v to_o desire_v that_o which_o be_v so_o know_v but_o if_o the_o understanding_n do_v err_v which_o often_o come_v to_o pass_v by_o the_o malice_n which_o blind_v we_o or_o happy_o it_o err_v not_o but_o the_o will_n through_o the_o liberty_n it_o have_v to_o evil_a will_v not_o follow_v that_o it_o know_v to_o be_v good_a then_o man_n fall_v into_o all_o kind_n of_o mischief_n therefore_o omit_v many_o thing_n which_o may_v serve_v for_o this_o purpose_n this_o be_v chief_o to_o be_v observe_v that_o we_o be_v most_o attentive_a ever_o when_o we_o will_v use_v the_o understanding_n that_o when_o we_o will_v desire_v to_o do_v any_o good_a work_n or_o to_o get_v a_o disposition_n thereunto_o namely_o to_o be_v despise_v of_o man_n to_o flee_v all_o delight_n of_o the_o world_n which_o godly_a man_n ever_o abandon_v in_o these_o and_o the_o like_o which_o seem_v to_o be_v grievous_a unto_o we_o to_o do_v or_o desire_v by_o and_o by_o we_o must_v use_v the_o help_n of_o the_o understanding_n whereby_o we_o consider_v and_o apprehend_v these_o thing_n as_o most_o precious_a and_o acceptable_a to_o god_n and_o such_o as_o do_v accompany_v the_o godly_a man_n to_o heaven_n without_o which_o he_o be_v ever_o out_o of_o his_o way_n to_o that_o happiness_n which_o assoon_o as_o it_o know_v to_o be_v such_o than_o the_o will_n take_v courage_n to_o will_n and_o embrace_v that_o thing_n and_o also_o to_o practice_v it_o for_o albeit_o the_o will_n as_o it_o be_v assist_v by_o god_n spirit_n work_v sweet_o yet_o often_o the_o difficulty_n and_o sharpness_n of_o the_o thing_n so_o deter_v it_o that_o it_o fail_v to_o work_v omit_v the_o duty_n it_o be_v bind_v unto_o but_o as_o we_o endeavour_n to_o make_v way_n unto_o it_o by_o the_o understanding_n as_o i_o have_v say_v it_o will_v assume_v such_o courage_n and_o strength_n that_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o work_n be_v know_v albeit_o most_o painful_a it_o will_v desire_v to_o do_v it_o and_o almost_o with_o as_o great_a facility_n will_v do_v it_o as_o that_o thing_n which_o it_o natural_o desire_v he_o that_o work_v after_o this_o manner_n shall_v easy_o become_v a_o man_n of_o singular_a virtue_n and_o shall_v make_v a_o wonderful_a repair_n in_o his_o soul_n of_o the_o slaughter_n and_o ruin_v which_o sin_n have_v there_o make_v and_o shall_v also_o with_o great_a facility_n do_v that_o which_o make_v man_n happy_a both_o in_o earth_n and_o heaven_n namely_o know_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n the_o wonderful_a thing_n of_o god_n and_o know_v to_o love_v they_o and_o love_v to_o rejoice_v in_o they_o contemn_v all_o earthly_a joy_n and_o pleasure_n for_o they_o 6_o instruction_n that_o god_n be_v please_v to_o give_v to_o all_o his_o saint_n and_o such_o as_o from_o the_o heart_n seek_v to_o serve_v he_o such_o a_o strength_n of_o will_n whereby_o they_o may_v both_o desire_v &_o love_n refuse_v &_o detest_v every_o thing_n in_o a_o great_a measure_n which_o either_o help_v forward_o or_o hinder_v their_o salvation_n this_o be_v sure_o to_o be_v know_v of_o all_o as_o the_o chief_a foundation_n to_o desire_v any_o thing_n which_o he_o judge_v to_o be_v desire_v or_o refuse_v and_o that_o to_o this_o or_o that_o end_n as_o often_o as_o he_o list_v as_o for_o the_o purpose_n there_o be_v no_o man_n but_o he_o may_v desire_v to_o be_v dis-reputed_n and_o disesteem_a of_o man_n albeit_o thing_n to_o some_o man_n be_v difficult_a to_o incline_v unto_o he_o may_v also_o to_o diverse_a end_n desire_v it_o and_o make_v choice_n of_o these_o end_n as_o he_o list_v for_o a_o man_n may_v desire_v it_o thereby_o to_o obtain_v the_o modesty_n of_o the_o mind_n which_o be_v a_o good_a end_n he_o may_v also_o affect_v it_o to_o the_o end_n that_o in_o something_o he_o may_v be_v like_o the_o son_n of_o god_n which_o be_v yet_o a_o better_a end_n and_o he_o may_v wish_v it_o that_o by_o abjection_n &_o contept_v he_o may_v be_v so_o dispose_v to_o god-ward_n that_o god_n may_v find_v in_o he_o a_o acceptable_a obedience_n by_o perfect_a love_n &_o charity_n &_o this_o be_v the_o best_a end_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n now_o to_o give_v a_o example_n of_o refuse_v to_o will_n and_o desire_v a_o thing_n a_o man_n may_v omit_v and_o refuse_v and_o not_o desire_v to_o be_v esteem_v or_o to_o be_v he_o love_v before_o other_o man_n and_o that_o to_o the_o same_o end_n which_o we_o have_v speak_v albeit_o by_o corruption_n of_o nature_n he_o be_v incline_v hereunto_o great_o to_o desire_v to_o be_v esteem_v and_o repute_v in_o like_a manner_n as_o it_o be_v in_o every_o man_n power_n in_o some_o degree_n who_o god_n spirit_n have_v sanctify_v to_o desire_v or_o not_o to_o desire_v any_o thing_n so_o be_v it_o to_o do_v the_o same_o as_o often_o as_o he_o will_v bend_v his_o will_n and_o use_v the_o holy_a mean_n thereunto_o yea_o every_o hour_n as_o by_o how_o much_o often_o he_o incline_v and_o enforce_v his_o will_n to_o desire_v or_o not_o to_o desire_v so_o much_o soon_o shall_v he_o extinguish_v in_o the_o soul_n all_o vicious_a habit_n and_o engender_v those_o virtuous_a for_o better_a declaration_n whereof_o let_v it_o be_v remarkable_a that_o to_o produce_v the_o act_n of_o willing_a the_o thing_n which_o we_o abhor_v we_o must_v consider_v that_o god_n be_v hereby_o serve_v in_o that_o we_o do_v desire_v this_o thing_n and_o incline_v ourwils_fw-mi unto_o it_o and_o as_o it_o be_v use_v violence_n to_o the_o will_v to_o effect_v it_o even_o of_o our_o saviour_n cease_v and_o the_o hatred_n of_o our_o saviour_n enter_v to_o which_o the_o gospel_n in_o many_o place_n exhort_v every_o sin_n and_o evil_a custom_n be_v banish_v but_o because_o such_o kind_n of_o hatred_n seem_v at_o the_o first_o sight_n to_o defer_v we_o from_o this_o exercise_n for_o the_o inbred_a love_n which_o every_o one_o have_v towards_o themselves_o above_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n unto_o which_o also_o every_o man_n be_v bind_v we_o will_v first_o show_v the_o manner_n how_o every_o one_o ought_v to_o hate_v himself_o second_o of_o ourselves_o which_o be_v like_o dry_a wood_n it_o will_v as_o tinder_n set_v on_o fire_n all_o our_o work_n but_o be_v divorce_v from_o this_o love_n of_o ourselves_o the_o love_n of_o god_n will_v stand_v in_o need_n of_o the_o bellows_n of_o many_o strong_a labour_n and_o action_n to_o keep_v it_o in_o for_o scarce_o shall_v we_o find_v any_o flame_n of_o this_o love_n but_o rather_o seem_v in_o ourselves_o to_o be_v key_n cold_a and_o therefore_o by_o many_o strong_a act_n must_v we_o succour_v it_o by_o the_o consideration_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o according_a to_o the_o love_n of_o ourselves_o seem_v sweet_a unto_o we_o namely_o by_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o great_a good_a of_o glory_n and_o comfort_n which_o we_o hope_v for_o in_o time_n to_o come_v and_o habituate_v and_o accustom_v to_o such_o kind_n of_o pray_v whereby_o we_o may_v feel_v in_o all_o our_o postulation_n and_o demand_n whether_o the_o love_n of_o god_n or_o the_o love_n of_o the_o thing_n which_o we_o ask_v have_v move_v we_o to_o ask_v it_o of_o god_n nor_o by_o any_o mean_n to_o pass_v from_o one_o demand_n until_o we_o have_v incline_v the_o will_n to_o accept_v it_o on_o that_o condition_n because_o god_n will_v have_v we_o to_o ask_v and_o in_o the_o same_o to_o serve_v he_o and_o if_o herein_o we_o be_v negligent_a there_o be_v no_o hope_n of_o grow_v in_o any_o good_a habit_n of_o pray_v as_o for_o the_o point_n we_o say_v our_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n hallow_a be_v thy_o name_n in_o this_o first_o petition_n we_o ask_v that_o the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o we_o may_v be_v have_v in_o estimation_n and_o love_n without_o any_o mixture_n of_o earthly_a thing_n to_o be_v love_v with_o it_o this_o be_v so_o high_a and_o sovereign_a a_o petition_n that_o whosoever_o obtain_v it_o be_v bless_v even_o on_o the_o earth_n therefore_o if_o any_o do_v understand_v it_o and_o love_n himself_o undoubted_o he_o will_v desire_v and_o seek_v so_o great_a many_o act_n of_o virtue_n which_o virtue_n can_v no_o other_o where_o be_v have_v but_o from_o the_o most_o precious_a mine_n and_o vein_n of_o the_o passion_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v true_a that_o many_o excellent_a thing_n touch_v the_o sovereignty_n of_o virtue_n be_v write_v in_o many_o book_n but_o happy_a be_v he_o that_o read_v and_o learn_v they_o in_o the_o book_n of_o life_n which_o be_v jesus_n christ_n the_o fountain_n of_o all_o wisdom_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n learn_v of_o i_o 11._o matth._n 11._o say_v that_o wisdom_n as_o of_o the_o most_o learned_a book_n and_o what_o shall_v we_o learn_v but_o a_o few_o thing_n as_o well_o lest_o they_o shall_v be_v forget_v as_o for_o that_o they_o be_v such_o that_o be_v learn_v we_o need_v no_o more_o learning_n we_o be_v humility_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v inexplicable_a yet_o will_v we_o according_a to_o our_o gross_a conceit_n endeavour_v to_o know_v it_o consider_v that_o when_o he_o be_v god_n infinite_a and_o man_n most_o perfect_a he_o will_v and_o with_o great_a joy_n do_v choose_v to_o be_v esteem_v and_o entreat_v for_o the_o most_o abject_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n for_o thy_o sake_n suffer_v all_o kind_n of_o injury_n and_o contumely_n from_o the_o day_n of_o his_o birth_n until_o he_o suffer_v most_o ignominious_a death_n and_o all_o these_o thing_n not_o for_o that_o they_o be_v necessary_a for_o he_o but_o that_o we_o who_o have_v so_o great_a necessity_n may_v learn_v the_o manner_n of_o humble_v ourselves_o which_o consist_v in_o these_o say_a thing_n whence_o we_o may_v see_v how_o reprehensible_a he_o be_v who_o do_v not_o learn_v this_o humility_n which_o so_o great_a a_o master_n do_v teach_v and_o which_o he_o exercise_v in_o himself_o albeit_o not_o for_o himself_o but_o that_o we_o may_v learn_v of_o he_o therefore_o the_o humility_n of_o our_o lord_n be_v know_v every_o one_o ought_v to_o frame_v in_o his_o heart_n another_o humility_n to_o the_o imitation_n and_o likeness_n hereof_o not_o that_o he_o be_v command_v to_o come_v to_o the_o equality_n thereof_o for_o albeit_o all_o the_o creature_n do_v desire_v and_o rejoice_v to_o be_v account_v vile_a and_o to_o be_v most_o unworthy_o entreat_v out_o of_o the_o mean_a conceit_n they_o have_v of_o themselves_o from_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o their_o own_o abiectnesse_n and_o baseness_n and_o if_o all_o the_o humility_n of_o all_o these_o be_v in_o one_o man_n yet_o this_o humility_n be_v nothing_o compare_v with_o our_o redeemer_n humility_n for_o many_o way_n there_o be_v infinite_a difference_n betwixt_o his_o majesty_n and_o our_o nullity_n every_o of_o which_o put_v infinite_a difference_n betwixt_o the_o excellency_n of_o his_o humility_n and_o all_o the_o humility_n of_o all_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n in_o one_o &_o therefore_o i_o say_v that_o we_o must_v frame_v our_o humility_n of_o the_o imitation_n and_o likeness_n of_o he_o some_o may_v happy_o admire_v that_o god_n exact_v of_o we_o so_o great_a contempt_n of_o ourselves_o and_o humility_n and_o which_o cost_v he_o so_o dear_a while_o by_o his_o example_n he_o teach_v it_o us._n therefore_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o it_o be_v his_o will_n so_o to_o do_v because_o indeed_o it_o be_v good_a for_o we_o and_o because_o we_o have_v no_o good_a thing_n of_o ourselves_o but_o all_o from_o his_o bountiful_a hand_n who_o we_o ought_v to_o glorify_v for_o it_o and_o not_o ourselves_o and_o it_o be_v not_o only_o good_a for_o we_o but_o most_o necessary_a for_o such_o humility_n be_v a_o perfect_a medicine_n for_o our_o deadly_a infirmity_n which_o proceed_v from_o pride_n nor_o shall_v ever_o any_o man_n be_v perfect_o cure_v of_o it_o but_o by_o humility_n so_o much_o as_o shall_v want_v of_o the_o perfect_a cure_n of_o it_o so_o much_o shall_v want_v of_o the_o cleanse_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o how_o much_o we_o want_v of_o the_o cleanse_n of_o the_o soul_n so_o much_o shall_v we_o want_v of_o the_o benefit_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o so_o much_o also_o shall_v we_o be_v less_o his_o and_o if_o any_o ask_v how_o one_o may_v rejoice_v to_o be_v agitate_a and_o turmoil_v with_o contempt_n and_o wrong_n see_v it_o be_v a_o thing_n difficult_a to_o desire_v it_o i_o answer_v that_o it_o may_v be_v do_v out_o of_o the_o great_a consideration_n of_o this_o humility_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o the_o benefit_n arise_v unto_o we_o by_o it_o and_o chief_o because_o we_o be_v so_o make_v able_a that_o god_n may_v have_v joy_n in_o we_o and_o a_o acceptable_a service_n of_o us._n but_o there_o be_v no_o disceete_a man_n will_v cast_v that_o from_o he_o whereby_o the_o will_n of_o god_n may_v be_v fufil_v together_o with_o a_o man_n own_o honour_n and_o inestimable_a and_o perpetual_a profit_n to_o himself_o and_o that_o with_o the_o labour_n of_o a_o most_o short_a time_n but_o that_o we_o may_v in_o reason_n answer_v this_o objection_n we_o must_v note_v that_o to_o frame_v so_o worthy_a a_o humility_n it_o be_v necessary_a as_o in_o the_o six_o instruction_n that_o we_o often_o incline_v our_o will_n and_o again_o that_o we_o often_o nay_o daily_a desire_n with_o joy_n this_o so_o precious_a a_o abjection_n and_o contempt_n for_o how_o worthy_o ought_v he_o to_o be_v despise_v who_o so_o often_o be_v find_v a_o traitor_n against_o his_o eternal_a lord_n and_o saviour_n by_o sin_n betray_v his_o soul_n to_o satan_n and_o take_v it_o from_o he_o who_o of_o his_o only_a goodness_n will_v die_v for_o it_o sure_o if_o serious_o we_o think_v on_o these_o thing_n with_o much_o grief_n shall_v we_o take_v honour_n if_o they_o be_v offer_v to_o we_o see_v we_o clear_o know_v that_o hence_o it_o may_v fall_v out_o that_o it_o may_v be_v a_o hindrance_n to_o we_o of_o most_o excellent_a good_a thing_n which_o by_o the_o contempt_n of_o ourselves_o and_o true_a humility_n be_v the_o way_n to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n do_v undouted_o remain_v for_o us._n yet_o notwithstanding_o in_o some_o case_n a_o man_n may_v wish_v to_o be_v honour_v and_o esteem_v namely_o if_o he_o have_v the_o eye_n of_o his_o intention_n to_o some_o service_n of_o god_n which_o he_o believe_v or_o see_v may_v by_o such_o honour_n be_v perform_v but_o even_o in_o that_o case_n also_o he_o must_v desire_v with_o great_a caution_n fear_n and_o some_o grief_n to_o be_v honour_v now_o there_o be_v a_o certain_a evil_a fruit_n and_o venomous_a hear_v be_v which_o grow_v plentiful_o in_o the_o world_n over-growing_a and_o indeed_o overthrow_v all_o virtue_n but_o chief_o hinder_v the_o increase_n &_o growth_n of_o humility_n namely_o vain_a glory_n the_o mother_n of_o all_o evil_a which_o infect_v all_o that_o be_v good_a in_o the_o whole_a man_n and_o little_a or_o no_o vain_a glory_n at_o all_o will_v offer_v itself_o to_o he_o that_o have_v deny_v himself_o and_o hate_v himself_o in_o such_o sort_n as_o we_o have_v say_v for_o vain_a glory_n be_v nothing_o but_o a_o complacency_n and_o joy_n that_o one_o take_v from_o that_o which_o he_o ought_v not_o to_o take_v it_o or_o in_o that_o manner_n he_o ought_v not_o to_o take_v it_o right_o may_v one_o rejoice_v of_o the_o good_a thing_n he_o receive_v of_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n so_o far_o four_o as_o he_o see_v or_o hope_n that_o any_o service_n of_o god_n or_o benefit_n of_o his_o soul_n for_o both_o be_v one_o if_o right_o understand_v may_v arise_v thereby_o else_o it_o be_v vain_a joy_n and_o vain_a glory_n
that_o thing_n bear_v rule_n in_o his_o heart_n that_o be_v so_o take_v with_o the_o love_n of_o it_o and_o with_o a_o certain_a kind_n of_o fruition_n he_o delight_v in_o it_o which_o be_v the_o end_n of_o delectation_n and_o to_o conclude_v do_v complete_a the_o motion_n of_o love_n he_o therefore_o that_o be_v so_o tempt_v let_v he_o first_o discern_v the_o fault_n from_o the_o temptation_n for_o in_o such_o sudden_a motion_n of_o love_n and_o concupiscence_n often_o their_o follow_v no_o fault_n because_o in_o man_n of_o ripe_a year_n they_o prevent_v the_o consent_n of_o reason_n but_o if_o any_o sin_n lie_v hide_v by_o the_o negligence_n of_o reason_n it_o be_v a_o very_a small_a one_o which_o i_o will_v have_v to_o be_v observe_v in_o all_o kind_n of_o temptation_n that_o i_o need_v not_o repeat_v the_o same_o thing_n again_o 1_o assoon_o therefore_o as_o any_o shall_v perceive_v these_o sudden_a motion_n of_o love_n and_o concupiscence_n raise_v in_o he_o he_o may_v many_o way_n repress_v the_o appetite_n that_o it_o go_v no_o further_o for_o he_o may_v forthwith_o by_o reason_n thus_o command_v his_o appetite_n let_v go_v this_o hurtful_a concupiscence_n for_o it_o become_v not_o a_o man_n endue_v with_o reason_n and_o much_o more_o excellent_a in_o mind_n than_o all_o these_o bodily_a thing_n and_o bear_v to_o the_o study_n of_o wisdom_n and_o beauty_n of_o virtue_n to_o desire_v this_o thing_n whereby_o the_o mind_n be_v turn_v away_o from_o better_a good_n thing_n but_o this_o restrain_v of_o the_o appetite_n be_v in_o use_n among_o heathen_a philosepher_n for_o it_o have_v nothing_o in_o it_o above_o reason_n 2_o there_o be_v therefore_o yet_o a_o more_o excellent_a way_n &_o worthy_a of_o a_o christian_a and_o out_o of_o faith_n which_o work_v by_o love_n be_v more_o effectual_a as_o thus_o abstain_v from_o this_o noisome_a concupiscence_n for_o it_o be_v not_o lawful_a that_o a_o man_n who_o shall_v enjoy_v eternal_a good_a thing_n and_o be_v clothe_v with_o glory_n as_o with_o a_o garment_n shall_v by_o these_o vile_a and_o base_a thing_n be_v divert_v from_o the_o care_n of_o better_a thing_n 3_o but_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o way_n more_o sublime_a as_o thus_o let_v go_v thy_o desire_n and_o abstain_v from_o this_o hurtful_a concupiscence_n for_o it_o be_v not_o convenient_a for_o i_o who_o have_v make_v a_o covenant_n with_o my_o god_n to_o keep_v his_o law_n to_o covet_v and_o desire_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v another_o and_o thus_o may_v we_o do_v in_o all_o kind_n of_o thing_n be_v they_o honourable_a profitable_a or_o delectable_a the_o first_o of_o these_o kind_n of_o repress_v the_o appetite_n be_v human_a the_o second_o be_v christian_a but_o the_o three_o be_v divine_a but_o if_o the_o appetite_n do_v not_o give_v place_n yet_o for_o all_o that_o do_v we_o not_o labour_v in_o vain_a for_o albeit_o the_o appetite_n do_v not_o obey_v reason_n at_o a_o beck_n as_o the_o other_o member_n do_v but_o after_o a_o certain_a politic_a manner_n and_o often_o do_v most_o strong_o resist_v reason_n yet_o we_o find_v that_o by_o thus_o do_v we_o be_v prepare_v unto_o a_o christian_a mortification_n and_o by_o custom_n of_o fight_v reason_n at_o length_n get_v the_o dominion_n over_o appetite_n to_o end_v therefore_o this_o point_n with_o a_o short_a but_o sweet_a admonition_n he_o that_o much_o desre_n to_o kill_v his_o passion_n so_o as_o that_o they_o may_v not_o kill_v his_o soul_n must_v know_v that_o if_o he_o shall_v know_v to_o moderate_v well_o his_o love_n from_o whence_o all_o passion_n do_v arise_v he_o sure_o shall_v carry_v away_o the_o victory_n nor_o shall_v he_o only_o overcome_v but_o by_o a_o wonderful_a short_a cut_n soon_o than_o other_o he_o shall_v overcome_v and_o with_o great_a delight_n &_o contentment_n and_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v it_o be_v this_o he_o must_v be_v very_o circumspect_a in_o the_o exercise_n of_o every_o thing_n that_o he_o set_v not_o his_o heart_n upon_o the_o apparent_a show_n of_o thing_n but_o assoon_o as_o he_o see_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v pleasant_a to_o turn_v away_o his_o heart_n &_o make_v cut_v up_o let_v this_o be_v the_o example_n a_o man_n see_v some_o profitable_a good_a thing_n and_o forthwith_o assoon_o as_o he_o see_v it_o while_o his_o love_n be_v stir_v up_o he_o lift_v up_o his_o heart_n to_o heaven_n say_v oh_o how_o much_o more_o profitable_a thing_n be_v provide_v for_o i_o there_o he_o see_v something_o that_o delight_v he_o and_o whilst_o his_o appetite_n grow_v in_o love_n of_o it_o his_o heart_n be_v instant_o lift_v up_o to_o heaven_n say_v how_o much_o sweet_a shall_v my_o banquet_n be_v in_o heaven_n where_o my_o meat_n shall_v be_v manna_n angel_n food_n and_o my_o drink_n the_o fountain_n of_o life_n he_o see_v some_o honourable_a good_a thing_n namely_o other_o man_n estimation_n conceive_v of_o his_o witty_a learning_n dexterity_n etc._n etc._n and_o whilst_o the_o appetite_n begin_v to_o be_v carry_v to_o the_o love_n of_o honour_n he_o run_v and_o lift_v up_o his_o heart_n say_v how_o much_o great_a estimation_n and_o honour_n shall_v be_v conceive_v of_o i_o in_o that_o most_o ample_a court_n of_o heaven_n than_o if_o i_o have_v the_o honour_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n 2_o of_o the_o passion_n of_o hate_n flight_n or_o abomination_n and_o of_o sorrow_n and_o grief_n where_o also_o be_v two_o thing_n as_o before_o 1_o the_o definition_n of_o hate_n as_o good_a so_o soon_o as_o it_o be_v see_v engender_v the_o love_n of_o it_o so_o evil_a by_o and_o by_o as_o it_o acknowledge_v beget_v the_o hatred_n of_o it_o now_o hate_n be_v a_o certain_a motion_n of_o the_o concupiscible_a dissonant_n from_o evil_n or_o more_o clear_o it_o be_v the_o motion_n of_o aversion_n wherewith_o the_o appetite_n be_v affect_v when_o any_o thing_n dissonant_n or_o contrary_n and_o repugnant_a to_o it_o be_v represent_v for_o as_o betwixt_o the_o appetite_n and_o good_a there_o be_v consent_n so_o betwixt_o the_o appetite_n and_o evil_a there_o be_v dissent_v hence_o come_v flight_n and_o abomination_n of_o the_o evil_n which_o the_o greatness_n of_o that_o sweetness_n which_o they_o feel_v in_o the_o sensitive_a appetite_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o greatness_n of_o that_o love_n and_o will_v to_o god_n that_o all_o be_v of_o god_n nay_o oft_o time_n at_o such_o time_n as_o he_o be_v visit_v with_o such_o a_o apprehension_n of_o sweetness_n he_o be_v take_v up_o with_o many_o vain_a affection_n and_o very_o sensual_a be_v draw_v thereunto_o by_o the_o beauty_n and_o pleasure_n of_o some_o person_n again_o he_o desire_v to_o be_v see_v and_o to_o be_v account_v devoute_a and_o grieve_v if_o he_o be_v
