we_o mind_v to_o attain_v eternal_a life_n in_o another_o sect._n 7_o and_o herein_o we_o shall_v take_v what_o view_n we_o be_v able_a of_o the_o nature_n glory_n and_o beauty_n of_o holiness_n and_o do_v confess_v it_o be_v but_o little_a of_o they_o which_o i_o can_v comprehend_v it_o be_v a_o matter_n indeed_o often_o speak_v unto_o but_o the_o essence_n and_o true_a nature_n of_o it_o be_v much_o hide_v from_o the_o eye_n of_o all_o live_a man_n the_o sense_n of_o what_o the_o scripture_n propose_v what_o i_o believe_v and_o what_o i_o desire_v a_o experience_n of_o that_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o declare_v but_o as_o we_o be_v not_o in_o this_o life_n perfect_a in_o the_o duty_n of_o holiness_n no_o more_o be_v we_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o its_o nature_n first_o therefore_o i_o say_v it_o be_v a_o gracious_a supernatural_a habit_n or_o a_o principle_n of_o spiritual_a life_n and_o with_o respect_n hereunto_o i_o shall_v brief_o do_v these_o three_o thing_n 1._o show_v what_o i_o mean_v by_o such_o a_o habit._n 2._o prove_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o habit_n require_v unto_o holiness_n yea_o that_o the_o nature_n of_o holiness_n consist_v therein_o 3._o declare_v in_o general_a the_o property_n of_o it_o sect._n 8_o 1._o our_o first_o enquiry_n be_v after_o the_o essence_n and_o form_n of_o holiness_n that_o from_o which_o any_o one_o be_v true_o and_o real_o make_v and_o denominate_v holy_a or_o what_o be_v the_o formal_a reason_n of_o that_o holiness_n which_o our_o nature_n be_v partaker_n of_o in_o this_o world_n this_o must_v be_v something_o peculiar_a something_o excellent_a and_o sacred_a as_o that_o which_o constitute_v the_o great_a and_o only_a difference_n that_o be_v between_o mankind_n on_o their_o own_o part_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n with_o respect_n unto_o eternity_n every_o one_o that_o have_v this_o holiness_n please_v god_n be_v accept_v with_o he_o and_o shall_v come_v to_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o he_o and_o every_o one_o that_o have_v it_o not_o be_v reject_v of_o he_o here_o and_o hereafter_o and_o this_o holiness_n in_o the_o first_o place_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o any_o single_a act_n of_o obedience_n unto_o god_n though_o good_a in_o their_o own_o nature_n and_o acceptable_a unto_o he_o for_o such_o act_n may_v be_v perform_v yea_o many_o of_o they_o by_o unholy_a person_n with_o example_n whereof_o the_o scripture_n abound_v cain_n sacrifice_n and_o ahab_n repentance_n be_v signal_n single_a act_n of_o obedience_n material_o yet_o no_o act_n of_o holiness_n formal_o nor_o do_v either_o make_v or_o denominate_v they_o holy_a and_o our_o apostle_n tell_v we_o that_o man_n may_v give_v all_o their_o good_n to_o the_o poor_a and_o their_o body_n to_o be_v burn_v and_o yet_o be_v nothing_o 1_o cor._n 13._o yet_o in_o single_a act_n who_o can_v go_v further_o such_o fruit_n may_v spring_v from_o seed_n that_o have_v no_o root_n single_n act_n may_v evidence_n holiness_n as_o abraham_n obedience_n in_o sacrifice_v his_o son_n but_o they_o constitute_v none_o holy_a nor_o will_v a_o series_n a_o course_n a_o multiplication_n of_o act_n and_o duty_n of_o custom_n usuage_n and_o frequent_a act_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o any_o science_n art_n or_o mystery_n do_v get_v a_o ready_a facility_n in_o and_o unto_o all_o the_o part_n and_o duty_n of_o it_o they_o have_v a_o intellectual_a habit_n therein_o it_o be_v so_o in_o thing_n moral_a as_o to_o virtue_n and_o vice_n there_o be_v some_o seed_n and_o spark_n of_o moral_a virtue_n remain_v in_o the_o ruin_n of_o deprave_a nature_n as_o of_o justice_n temperance_n fortitude_n and_o the_o like_a hence_o god_n call_v on_o profligate_v sinner_n to_o remember_v and_o show_v themselves_o man_n or_o not_o to_o act_v contrary_a to_o the_o principle_n and_o light_n of_o nature_n which_o be_v inseparable_a from_o we_o as_o we_o be_v man_n isa._n 46._o 8._o these_o principle_n may_v be_v so_o excite_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o natural_a light_n and_o improve_v by_o education_n instruction_n and_o example_n until_o person_n by_o a_o assiduous_a diligent_a performance_n of_o the_o act_n and_o duty_n of_o they_o may_v attain_v such_o a_o readiness_n unto_o they_o and_o facility_n in_o they_o as_o be_v not_o by_o any_o outward_a mean_n easy_o change_v or_o divert_v and_o this_o be_v a_o moral_a habit_n in_o like_a manner_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o piety_n and_o religion_n in_o act_n of_o outward_a obedience_n unto_o god_n man_n by_o the_o same_o mean_n may_v so_o accustom_v themselves_o unto_o they_o as_o to_o have_v a_o habitual_a disposition_n unto_o their_o exercise_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o that_o it_o be_v so_o unto_o a_o high_a degree_n with_o many_o superstitious_a person_n but_o in_o all_o these_o thing_n the_o act_n do_v still_o precede_v the_o habit_n of_o the_o same_o nature_n and_o kind_n which_o be_v produce_v by_o they_o and_o not_o otherwise_o but_o this_o holiness_n be_v such_o a_o habit_n or_o principle_n as_o be_v antecedent_n unto_o all_o act_n of_o the_o same_o kind_n as_o we_o shall_v prove_v there_o never_o be_v by_o any_o nor_o ever_o can_v be_v any_o act_n or_o duty_n of_o true_a holiness_n perform_v where_o there_o be_v not_o in_o order_n of_o nature_n antecedent_o a_o habit_n of_o holiness_n in_o the_o person_n by_o who_o they_o be_v perform_v many_o act_n and_o duty_n for_o the_o substance_n of_o they_o good_a and_o approvable_a may_v be_v perform_v without_o it_o but_o no_o one_o that_o have_v the_o proper_a form_n and_o nature_n of_o holiness_n can_v be_v so_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o every_o act_n of_o true_a holiness_n must_v have_v something_o supernatural_a in_o it_o from_o a_o internal_a renew_a principle_n of_o grace_n and_o that_o which_o have_v not_o so_o be_v it_o otherwise_o what_o it_o will_v be_v no_o act_n or_o duty_n of_o true_a holiness_n sect._n 9_o and_o i_o conception_n and_o description_n of_o they_o but_o we_o only_o call_v it_o so_o because_o in_o its_o effect_n and_o manner_n of_o operation_n it_o agree_v in_o sundry_a thing_n with_o acquire_v intellectual_a or_o moral_a habit_n but_o it_o have_v much_o more_o conformity_n unto_o a_o natural_a unchangeable_a instict_n than_o unto_o any_o acquire_v habit._n wherefore_o god_n charge_v it_o on_o man_n that_o in_o their_o obedience_n unto_o he_o they_o do_v not_o answer_v that_o instinct_n which_o be_v in_o other_o creature_n towards_o their_o lord_n and_o benefactor_n isa._n 1._o 3._o and_o which_o they_o cordial_o observe_v jerem._n 8._o 7._o but_o herein_o god_n teach_v we_o more_o than_o the_o beast_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o make_v we_o wise_a than_o the_o fowl_n of_o heaven_n job_n 35._o 11._o this_o therefore_o be_v that_o which_o i_o intend_v a_o virtue_n a_o power_n a_o principle_n of_o spiritual_a life_n and_o grace_n wrought_v create_v infuse_v into_o our_o soul_n discharge_n of_o all_o duty_n and_o work_n of_o holiness_n be_v inseparable_a this_o abide_v always_o in_o and_o with_o all_o that_o be_v sanctify_v whence_o they_o be_v always_o holy_a and_o not_o only_o so_o when_o they_o be_v actual_o exercise_v in_o the_o duty_n of_o holiness_n hereby_o be_v they_o prepare_v dispose_v and_o enable_v unto_o all_o duty_n of_o obedience_n as_o we_o shall_v show_v immediate_o and_o by_o the_o influence_n hereof_o into_o their_o act_n and_o duty_n do_v they_o become_v holy_a and_o no_o otherwise_o sect._n 10_o for_o the_o further_a
grace_n and_o the_o reason_n hereof_o be_v because_o the_o several_a person_n be_v individed_a in_o their_o operation_n act_v all_o by_o the_o same_o will_n the_o same_o wisdom_n the_o same_o power_n unto_o each_o person_n be_v because_o in_o the_o individed_a operation_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n each_o person_n do_v the_o same_o work_n in_o the_o order_n of_o their_o subsistence_n not_o one_o as_o the_o instrument_n of_o the_o other_o or_o mere_o employ_v by_o the_o other_o but_o as_o one_o common_a principle_n of_o authority_n wisdom_n love_n and_o power_n how_o come_v they_o then_o eminent_o to_o be_v assign_v one_o to_o one_o person_n another_o to_o another_o as_o unto_o the_o father_n be_v assign_v opera_fw-la naturae_fw-la the_o work_n of_o nature_n or_o the_o old_a creation_n to_o the_o son_n opera_fw-la gratiae_n procuratae_fw-la all_o divine_a operation_n that_o belong_v unto_o the_o recovery_n of_o mankind_n by_o grace_n and_o unto_o the_o spirit_n opera_fw-la gratiae_n applicatae_fw-la the_o work_n of_o god_n whereby_o grace_n be_v make_v effectual_a unto_o we_o and_o this_o be_v do_v 1._o 1._o when_o any_o especial_a impression_n be_v make_v of_o the_o especial_a property_n of_o any_o person_n on_o any_o work_n then_o be_v that_o work_n assign_v peculiar_o to_o that_o person_n so_o there_o be_v of_o the_o power_n and_o authority_n of_o not_o immediate_o yet_o by_o virtue_n of_o its_o acts._n it_o be_v moreover_o necessary_a and_o natural_a that_o every_o act_n of_o the_o will_n every_o work_n of_o a_o man_n be_v for_o a_o certain_a end_n two_o thing_n therefore_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v in_o all_o our_o obedience_n 1_o the_o duty_n itself_o we_o do_v and_o 2_o the_o end_n for_o which_o we_o do_v it_o if_o any_o habit_n
