have_v his_o own_o corruption_n and_o the_o temptation_n of_o the_o evil_a spirit_n on_o the_o one_o side_n to_o draw_v he_o into_o sin_n so_o i_o be_o very_o persuade_v that_o he_o have_v the_o according_a to_o their_o kind_n but_o those_o that_o be_v bring_v forth_o since_o by_o the_o creature_n as_o his_o instrument_n have_v degenerate_v and_o lose_v much_o of_o their_o first_o excellency_n so_o the_o sweetness_n and_o comfort_n that_o be_v to_o be_v have_v immediate_o from_o god_n in_o a_o spiritual_a communion_n with_o he_o and_o in_o behold_v by_o faith_n his_o love_a countenance_n through_o jesus_n christ_n be_v incomparable_o beyond_o all_o the_o sweetness_n which_o be_v instrumental_o convey_v to_o we_o by_o the_o creature_n therefore_o let_v our_o soul_n long_o he_o if_o the_o heaven_n be_v so_o glorious_a how_o unspeakable_a be_v his_o glory_n and_o majesty_n who_o have_v the_o whole_a heaven_n for_o his_o throne_n and_o treadeâ—h_n upon_o the_o earth_n as_o his_o footstool_n yea_o consider_v that_o if_o god_n wisdom_n power_n greatness_n etc._n etc._n be_v so_o notable_o manifest_v in_o these_o earthly_a creature_n which_o we_o see_v it_o be_v much_o more_o glorious_o apparent_a in_o the_o wonderful_a frame_n of_o the_o heaven_n which_o we_o can_v scarce_o see_v by_o reason_n of_o their_o distance_n not_o doubt_v but_o that_o the_o heaven_n do_v as_o far_o excel_v these_o low_a creature_n in_o the_o excellent_a perfection_n of_o its_o nature_n as_o it_o be_v above_o they_o in_o height_n of_o situation_n 2._o again_o let_v this_o make_v thou_o wonder_v at_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n with_o a_o thankful_a heart_n who_o have_v not_o only_o give_v man_n a_o pleasant_a dwell_n here_o on_o earth_n plentiful_o furnish_v and_o a_o other_o water_n not_o one_o worm_n creep_v on_o the_o earth_n here_o then_o admire_v the_o wonderful_a power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n who_o on_o the_o five_o day_n by_o his_o all-commanding_a word_n fill_v the_o air_n with_o multitude_n of_o creature_n fly_v there_o the_o water_n with_o abundant_a of_o fishâ—s_n swim_v there_o this_o be_v do_v even_o in_o a_o moment_n consider_v what_o numberless_a swarm_n there_o be_v both_o of_o foul_n and_o fish_n bring_v forth_o on_o the_o five_o day_n whereas_o the_o very_a day_n before_o there_o be_v not_o one_o of_o any_o kind_n to_o be_v affinity_n between_o they_o as_o the_o foul_n be_v cover_v with_o feather_n so_o the_o fish_n with_o scale_n as_o the_o foul_n move_v in_o the_o air_n so_o do_v the_o fish_n in_o that_o element_n which_o come_v near_a the_o nature_n of_o the_o air_n as_o the_o foul_n have_v wing_n to_o fly_v withal_o so_o the_o fish_n have_v â—innes_n whereby_o they_o swim_v and_o that_o be_v a_o motion_n very_o like_a to_o that_o of_o fly_v yea_o some_o of_o either_o kind_n do_v communicate_v with_o each_o other_o in_o their_o element_n for_o as_o we_o have_v water-foul_n so_o there_o have_v be_v flying-fish_n in_o great_a abundance_n so_o that_o here_o you_o may_v magnify_v the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n who_o in_o the_o day_n that_o these_o creature_n be_v make_v do_v imprint_v upon_o they_o such_o property_n and_o quality_n as_o shall_v be_v evidence_n to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n in_o some_o sort_n that_o they_o be_v but_o the_o work_n of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o day_n 2._o consider_v here_o that_o as_o the_o lord_n have_v appoint_v the_o foul_n to_o fly_v in_o the_o air_n and_o the_o fish_n to_o swim_v in_o the_o sea_n confine_v each_o to_o his_o own_o element_n for_o the_o general_a though_o some_o few_o particular_n be_v suffer_v to_o live_v in_o both_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o walk_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o our_o calling_n and_o not_o to_o think_v we_o shall_v mend_v ourselves_o in_o a_o different_a element_n or_o another_o kind_n of_o course_n without_o some_o special_a cause_n some_o few_o may_v have_v some_o special_a warrant_n to_o change_v their_o calling_n as_o amos_n to_o leave_v his_o flock_n and_o teach_v the_o people_n and_o peter_n to_o leave_v his_o net_n and_o fish_n for_o man_n these_o have_v a_o immediate_a call_n from_o god_n and_o so_o i_o dare_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o in_o case_n of_o great_a necessity_n when_o the_o church_n be_v destitute_a of_o able_a minister_n some_o well-studied_n in_o the_o scripture_n and_o experience_v in_o the_o mystery_n of_o grace_n may_v take_v upon_o they_o the_o office_n of_o the_o ministry_n be_v lawful_o separate_v unto_o that_o function_n yet_o this_o will_v prove_v no_o more_o that_o every_o one_o may_v at_o his_o pleasure_n run_v from_o the_o shop_n to_o the_o pulpit_n than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o all_o the_o fish_n in_o the_o sea_n may_v fly_v up_o into_o the_o air_n because_o some_o few_o do_v so_o and_o this_o shall_v especial_o â—each_v christian_n who_o be_v call_v unto_o holiness_n to_o take_v heed_n how_o they_o leave_v their_o element_n they_o be_v bid_v to_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n even_o as_o bird_n fly_v in_o the_o air_n and_o in_o this_o element_n they_o must_v keep_v for_o as_o the_o air_n give_v breath_n unto_o the_o foul_n that_o fly_v in_o it_o so_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n give_v the_o new_a life_n unto_o those_o that_o walk_v in_o he_o the_o water_n will_v choke_v and_o drown_v the_o foul_n if_o they_o shall_v fall_v into_o they_o so_o sin_n be_v that_o which_o endanger_v the_o spiritual_a life_n when_o a_o christian_n fall_v into_o it_o the_o air_n give_v a_o speedy_a flight_n and_o motion_n to_o the_o bird_n whereas_o the_o water_n will_v wet_v their_o wing_n and_o cause_v they_o to_o move_v but_o slow_o if_o they_o fall_v into_o it_o so_o the_o spirit_n when_o a_o christian_a walk_v in_o it_o carry_v he_o along_o with_o winged-affection_n and_o set_v his_o heart_n in_o a_o speedy_a motion_n upon_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n make_v he_o ready_a unto_o every_o good_a work_n but_o if_o he_o fall_v into_o sin_n which_o be_v like_o the_o water_n of_o the_o dead_a sea_n that_o lake_n of_o sodom_n his_o heart_n be_v like_o a_o bird_n drench_v in_o water_n his_o affection_n be_v deaden_v his_o heart_n move_v but_o slow_o yea_o many_o time_n he_o lie_v for_o dead_a and_o there_o be_v scarce_o any_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o be_v discern_v in_o he_o and_o as_o in_o such_o case_n a_o foul_a have_v need_v of_o more_o than_o ordinary_a mean_n to_o help_v as_o to_o be_v hold_v over_o a_o warm_a fire_n etc._n etc._n so_o a_o christian_n that_o he_o may_v recover_v his_o wing_n again_o and_o have_v his_o heart_n spiritual_o affect_v and_o enlarge_v towards_o god_n have_v need_n of_o special_a humiliation_n special_a meditation_n pâ—aier_n and_o other_o warm_n and_o quicken_a mean_n to_o raise_v he_o up_o 3._o as_o the_o air_n give_v breath_n and_o motion_n so_o also_o it_o give_v support_v to_o the_o bird_n earth_n and_o it_o carry_v they_o even_o as_o the_o earth_n do_v the_o beast_n which_o go_v up_o and_o down_o upon_o it_o so_o do_v the_o spirit_n also_o give_v support_v unto_o all_o that_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n they_o be_v keep_v by_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o god_n through_o faith_n unto_o salvation_n if_o it_o be_v not_o ordinary_a it_o may_v seem_v strange_a that_o the_o air_n which_o none_o can_v see_v be_v so_o thin_a a_o substance_n shall_v carry_v so_o many_o million_o of_o soul_n as_o there_o be_v in_o it_o fly_v up_o and_o down_o wonderful_a be_v the_o power_n of_o the_o bless_a invisible_a spirit_n who_o support_v so_o many_o thousand_o christian_n by_o his_o sanctify_a virtue_n against_o all_o the_o power_n of_o darkness_n 4._o as_o these_o bird_n do_v now_o live_v in_o the_o air_n so_o be_v the_o foul_n create_v in_o the_o air_n at_o the_o first_o so_o whosoever_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n be_v also_o bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n he_o have_v his_o begin_n in_o this_o element_n 5._o consider_v that_o as_o the_o bird_n although_o they_o live_v and_o move_v in_o the_o air_n yet_o they_o come_v down_o to_o receive_v some_o refreshment_n from_o the_o earth_n so_o the_o lord_n allow_v his_o child_n to_o receive_v some_o nourishment_n from_o the_o earth_n and_o to_o partake_v of_o its_o refreshment_n yet_o so_o as_o they_o must_v not_o delight_v in_o the_o earth_n as_o in_o their_o element_n nor_o in_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o earth_n as_o their_o chief_a contentment_n but_o like_o the_o bird_n of_o heaven_n have_v supply_v their_o necessity_n must_v be_v ready_a to_o soar_v aloft_o again_o and_o not_o in_o their_o affection_n be_v still_o grovel_v here_o below_o 6._o you_o see_v how_o spare_o the_o bird_n take_v of_o the_o water_n a_o bird_n do_v not_o drink_v like_o a_o beast_n it_o rather_o sip_v so_o shall_v a_o christian_n spare_o use_v the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n rather_o sip_v like_o the_o bird_n than_o swill_v like_o the_o swine_n as_o for_o those_o that_o give_v themselves_o to_o drink_v down_o iniquity_n like_o water_n and_o to_o commit_v sin_n with_o greediness_n they_o be_v none_o of_o those_o who_o have_v their_o conversation_n in_o heaven_n nay_o those_o that_o glut_v themselves_o with_o earthly_a pleasure_n know_v no_o better_a contentment_n than_o in_o such_o thing_n as_o please_v the_o sense_n the_o appetite_n the_o eye_n ear_n taste_n etc._n etc._n they_o
be_v none_o of_o those_o that_o be_v bear_v up_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n above_o the_o earth_n consider_v how_o little_a content_v one_o of_o these_o creature_n and_o then_o learn_v to_o be_v ashamed_a that_o thy_o appetite_n be_v so_o much_o beyond_o thy_o necessity_n and_o practice_v mortification_n as_o far_o as_o we_o can_v guess_v the_o bird_n take_v more_o delight_n in_o fly_v and_o sing_v than_o they_o do_v in_o feed_v and_o therefore_o they_o have_v soon_o do_v with_o this_o so_o shall_v a_o christian_n be_v more_o delight_v in_o converse_v with_o god_n in_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n in_o run_v the_o way_n of_o his_o commandment_n than_o in_o serve_v the_o necessity_n of_o nature_n yea_o it_o shall_v be_v his_o meat_n and_o drink_n to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v a_o delight_n to_o the_o bird_n to_o sing_v and_o soar_v aloft_o again_o as_o the_o bird_n use_v not_o these_o thing_n so_o as_o to_o make_v her_o unfit_a to_o fly_v so_o a_o christian_a must_v not_o abuse_v meat_n and_o drink_n so_o as_o to_o clog_v and_o dull_v his_o spirit_n and_o make_v he_o more_o dull_a and_o dead_a in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o so_o to_o refresh_v himself_o that_o he_o may_v be_v the_o more_o cheerful_a and_o lively_a in_o his_o heavenly_a flight_n 7._o as_o the_o bird_n not_o sow_v nor_o gather_v into_o barnes_n as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o yet_o be_v feed_v by_o our_o heavenly_a father_n so_o shall_v a_o child_n of_o god_n depend_v upon_o his_o providence_n without_o distrustful_a ear_n against_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n though_o not_o without_o moderate_a and_o christian_n care_n which_o serve_v the_o providence_n of_o god_n 8._o as_o the_o bird_n have_v find_v somewhat_o to_o satisfy_v its_o hunger_n by_o its_o providence_n of_o god_n mat._n 10._o so_o shall_v a_o christian_n learn_v to_o depend_v upon_o the_o providence_n and_o protection_n of_o god_n who_o be_v of_o far_o great_a price_n in_o the_o esteem_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n than_o many_o sparrow_n know_v certain_o that_o thy_o hair_n be_v number_v and_o that_o none_o of_o they_o can_v fall_v to_o the_o ground_n without_o thy_o heavenly_a father_n 10._o consider_v that_o as_o when_o the_o bird_n fly_v high_a it_o take_v least_o notice_n of_o earthly_a thing_n and_o be_v least_o move_v with_o they_o and_o affect_v towards_o they_o so_o when_o a_o christian_a be_v most_o raise_v in_o spiritual_a affection_n to_o the_o great_a height_n of_o heavenly-mindedness_a keep_v near_a heaven_n than_o be_v the_o earth_n far_o out_o of_o sight_n and_o he_o be_v least_o move_v with_o the_o thing_n here_o below_o and_o best_a able_a to_o contemn_v earthly_a vanity_n he_o be_v too_o far_o above_o these_o to_o be_v much_o affect_v towards_o they_o therefore_o this_o shall_v make_v we_o think_v of_o the_o exhortation_n of_o the_o apostle_n mind_v the_o thing_n which_o be_v above_o and_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o help_v ourselves_o against_o earthly_a affection_n and_o fleshly_a lust_n think_v with_o thyself_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o i_o be_o so_o earthly-minded_n that_o my_o affection_n be_v so_o engage_v to_o this_o or_o that_o in_o the_o world_n yet_o i_o can_v come_v off_o nor_o free_v myself_o that_o i_o can_v scarce_o persuade_v my_o own_o heart_n to_o be_v without_o these_o and_o these_o thing_n it_o be_v this_o because_o my_o heart_n be_v not_o carry_v aloft_o it_o draw_v too_o near_o the_o ground_n it_o withdraw_v too_o much_o from_o god_n if_o i_o shall_v keep_v up_o my_o heart_n close_o to_o god_n these_o thing_n will_v be_v out_o of_o sight_n the_o earth_n will_v seldom_o be_v in_o my_o thought_n at_o least_o not_o so_o as_o to_o work_v much_o upon_o my_o affection_n on_o the_o other_o side_n you_o see_v that_o those_o bird_n which_o use_v so_o much_o upon_o the_o ground_n they_o fly_v but_o soft_o as_o may_v be_v see_v by_o those_o that_o use_v about_o our_o house_n so_o also_o those_o christian_n that_o be_v much_o take_v up_o with_o the_o deal_n and_o business_n of_o the_o world_n they_o fly_v but_o soft_o have_v but_o slow_a affection_n and_o sluggish_a motion_n to_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n they_o go_v but_o cold_o about_o good_a duty_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v pray_v for_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o bear_v we_o upward_o 11._o consider_v also_o that_o as_o the_o bird_n can_v mount_v up_o into_o the_o air_n and_o yet_o light_a upon_o the_o earth_n too_o and_o receive_v some_o refreshment_n there_o whereas_o the_o beast_n can_v mount_v up_o and_o live_v in_o the_o air_n so_o a_o christian_a can_v and_o may_v partake_v of_o the_o natural_a comfort_n and_o refreshment_n of_o this_o life_n though_o in_o a_o moderate_a manner_n and_o measure_n as_o well_o as_o the_o natural_a man_n but_o the_o natural_a man_n can_v mount_v up_o to_o heaven_n can_v live_v in_o the_o air_n can_v live_v by_o the_o spirit_n he_o have_v no_o relish_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n the_o spiritual_a man_n judge_v all_o thing_n he_o can_v discern_v what_o be_v in_o nature_n but_o himself_o be_v judge_v of_o no_o man_n his_o excellency_n can_v be_v discern_v by_o the_o eye_n of_o nature_n 12._o again_o as_o the_o bird_n live_v in_o a_o stormy_a element_n and_o feel_v much_o alteration_n of_o weather_n heat_n cold_a wind_n etc._n etc._n as_o the_o air_n be_v the_o most_o unsettle_a of_o all_o other_o part_n of_o the_o creation_n so_o christian_n do_v live_v in_o a_o condition_n subject_a to_o manifold_a alteration_n subject_a to_o many_o storm_n of_o persecution_n and_o temptation_n and_o as_o the_o bird_n be_v then_o especial_o in_o danger_n by_o snare_n and_o gin_n when_o they_o be_v upon_o the_o earth_n to_o which_o they_o be_v not_o subject_a when_o they_o be_v aloft_o in_o the_o air_n so_o a_o christian_n be_v then_o in_o danger_n to_o be_v ensnare_v and_o entangle_v when_o he_o deal_v with_o earthly_a thing_n and_o be_v most_o affect_a to_o the_o thing_n below_o when_o he_o be_v most_o heavenly-minded_n then_o be_v he_o most_o out_o of_o danger_n of_o these_o snare_n 13._o the_o bird_n in_o the_o air_n meet_v with_o bird_n of_o prey_n there_o also_o which_o be_v ready_a to_o seize_v upon_o they_o and_o destroy_v they_o so_o the_o devil_n who_o be_v call_v the_o prince_n that_o rule_v in_o the_o air_n do_v especial_o choose_v to_o assault_v those_o that_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n even_o then_o when_o they_o be_v most_o spiritual_a endeavour_v to_o pull_v down_o those_o that_o be_v high_a in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n as_o david_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o special_a watchfulness_n must_v be_v use_v by_o such_o 14._o as_o the_o bird_n be_v of_o all_o other_o live_v creature_n the_o of_o grace_n in_o his_o soul_n and_o a_o near_a approach_n of_o the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n and_o a_o special_a warmth_n of_o god_n love_n be_v shed_v abroad_o into_o his_o heart_n as_o the_o bird_n by_o chirp_a do_v set_v other_o on_o sing_v and_o many_o join_v together_o in_o consort_n so_o one_o christian_n shall_v draw_v another_o by_o example_n to_o yield_v up_o sweet_a song_n of_o outward_o for_o thing_n without_o we_o than_o for_o those_o more_o excellent_a thing_n within_o we_o thus_o many_o a_o one_o say_v i_o thank_v god_n for_o health_n for_o meat_n and_o drink_n etc._n etc._n that_o never_o not_o so_o much_o as_o in_o word_n do_v give_v he_o thanks_o for_o his_o soul_n and_o the_o several_a faculty_n of_o it_o how_o seldom_o have_v god_n any_o praise_n for_o our_o understanding_n our_o judgement_n our_o memory_n our_o reason_n will_n and_o affection_n how_o lame_a will_v our_o soul_n be_v without_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n how_o blind_a without_o reason_n memory_n or_o understanding_n yet_o how_o unthankful_a be_v we_o to_o he_o that_o make_v they_o we_o shall_v râ—ckon_v these_o among_o the_o chief_a of_o god_n blessing_n next_o to_o the_o sanctify_a grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n and_o according_o show_v our_o thankfulness_n for_o they_o to_o his_o glory_n sect_n 2._o ii_o in_o as_o much_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v more_o excellent_a by_o its_o the_o like_a serve_v to_o dress_v up_o a_o earthly_a carcase_n shalâ—_n be_v better_o remember_v than_o god_n himself_o yea_o shall_v be_v remember_v when_o he_o be_v forget_v thus_o every_o thing_n yet_o never_o complain_v of_o weakness_n we_o can_v suffer_v mortal_a disease_n most_o dangerous_a corruption_n to_o grow_v upon_o our_o soul_n and_o never_o see_v our_o need_n of_o spiritual_a physic_n how_o many_o a_o soul_n be_v swell_v with_o pride_n and_o overgrow_v with_o vile_a affection_n and_o yet_o no_o care_n be_v take_v of_o it_o but_o it_o be_v let_v alone_o as_o if_o all_o be_v esteem_v as_o nothing_o no_o care_n be_v use_v to_o have_v it_o cure_v nay_o he_o that_o shall_v desire_v to_o cure_v it_o or_o persuade_v they_o from_o these_o desperate_a course_n tend_v to_o the_o destruction_n of_o their_o soul_n shall_v be_v hate_v as_o a_o enemy_n our_o very_a creation_n shall_v make_v we_o ashamed_a of_o this_o folly_n that_o all_o the_o care_n be_v take_v for_o the_o body_n frame_v out_o of_o the_o dust_n and_o the_o soul_n be_v utter_o neglect_v which_o the_o lord_n himself_o breathe_v into_o the_o body_n fâ—ar_v not_o they_o say_v our_o saviour_n mat._n 10.28_o which_o after_o they_o have_v kill_v the_o body_n can_v do_v no_o more_o but_o fear_v bim_n which_o can_v cast_v the_o body_n and_o soul_n into_o hellfire_n yet_o he_o that_o shall_v follow_v our_o saviour_n counsel_n in_o this_o shall_v be_v think_v to_o be_v a_o fool_n by_o many_o man_n he_o that_o will_v rather_o suffer_v harm_n in_o his_o body_n or_o loss_n in_o his_o good_n and_o such_o thing_n as_o concern_v the_o body_n than_o hazard_v his_o soul_n upon_o any_o sin_n which_o be_v death_n to_o the_o soul_n be_v think_v to_o do_v it_o in_o simplicity_n for_o want_n of_o wit_n whereas_o even_a reason_n may_v teach_v we_o that_o the_o soul_n be_v a_o thousand_o time_n better_o than_o the_o body_n and_o the_o misery_n of_o the_o soul_n incomparable_o beyond_o the_o punishment_n that_o can_v befall_v the_o body_n in_o this_o life_n let_v we_o then_o labour_v to_o prevent_v the_o everlasting_a destruction_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o fear_v it_o more_o than_o a_o thousand_o death_n of_o the_o body_n if_o it_o can_v possible_o endure_v so_o many_o think_v that_o a_o precious_a thing_n that_o weigh_v more_o than_o the_o whole_a earth_n in_o the_o balance_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n and_o the_o judgement_n of_o christ._n what_o shall_v it_o profit_v a_o man_n to_o gain_v the_o whole_a world_n and_o lose_v his_o own_o soul_n oh_o learn_v to_o prize_v thy_o soul_n a_o precious_a creature_n and_o immortal_a spirit_n and_o make_v it_o appear_v thou_o make_v more_o reckon_a of_o it_o than_o of_o thy_o body_n thy_o body_n be_v but_o a_o small_a piece_n of_o earth_n but_o the_o whole_a earth_n be_v not_o able_a to_o bring_v forth_o or_o yield_v matter_n for_o one_o soul_n which_o be_v of_o a_o high_a nature_n sect_n 3._o iii_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o also_o that_o the_o great_a good_a which_o one_o man_n can_v do_v for_o another_o be_v that_o which_o be_v do_v for_o his_o soul._n the_o feed_n clothing_n and_o refresh_n of_o another_o body_n be_v a_o good_a work_n if_o right_o perform_v but_o the_o good_a which_o be_v do_v to_o the_o soul_n be_v a_o better_a work_n as_o the_o soul_n be_v better_a than_o the_o body_n this_o therefore_o shall_v reform_v a_o gross_a folly_n among_o we_o whereby_o it_o be_v conceive_v that_o there_o be_v no_o good_a work_n in_o a_o manner_n beside_o that_o which_o be_v do_v to_o the_o body_n it_o be_v true_a that_o he_o who_o have_v this_o world_n good_a and_o yet_o do_v no_o good_a in_o this_o kind_n do_v not_o true_o perform_v any_o other_o good_a work_n but_o yet_o this_o on_o the_o otherside_n be_v from_o do_v good_a to_o the_o soul_n of_o other_o this_o be_v a_o gross_a carnal_a conceit_n it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o affirm_v that_o the_o body_n be_v better_a than_o the_o soul_n earth_n than_o heaven_n mortality_n more_o excellent_a than_o immortality_n and_o a_o lump_n of_o flesh_n more_o worth_a than_o a_o spiritual_a be_v now_o man_n be_v so_o far_o from_o esteem_v that_o best_a which_o be_v do_v for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o soul_n that_o they_o account_v those_o admonition_n and_o reproof_n which_o be_v tender_v to_o they_o for_o this_o purpose_n the_o great_a sign_n of_o ill-will_n that_o any_o man_n can_v show_v to_o other_o no_o man_n be_v account_v a_o worse_a neighbour_n than_o he_o that_o will_v seek_v to_o pluck_v man_n soul_n as_o brand_n out_o of_o the_o fire_n of_o god_n wrath_n by_o show_v they_o the_o danger_n of_o their_o sin_n if_o man_n want_v for_o the_o body_n what_o outcry_n be_v there_o make_v against_o the_o hardness_n of_o other_o heart_n man_n be_v so_o hard-hearted_a now_o a_o day_n that_o they_o will_v not_o give_v a_o poor_a man_n a_o bit_n of_o bread_n they_o will_v see_v he_o starve_v first_o and_o sometime_o
the_o nourishment_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o for_o the_o preservation_n of_o life_n and_o this_o also_o yield_v abundant_a matter_n of_o delight_n and_o refreshment_n job_n say_v do_v not_o the_o ear_n try_v word_n and_o the_o mouth_n or_o palate_n taste_v his_o meat_n job_n 12.11_o that_o be_v do_v it_o not_o by_o taste_v try_v it_o for_o god_n have_v give_v this_o ability_n to_o the_o creature_n to_o try_v what_o be_v agreeable_a to_o their_o body_n and_o what_o be_v displease_v in_o the_o last_o place_n the_o touch_n or_o feel_v be_v may_v rise_v again_o a_o incorruptible_a sect_n 4._o iv._o even_o this_o earthly_a frame_n of_o the_o body_n prove_v it_o a_o hard_a thing_n to_o put_v off_o earthly_a affection_n and_o therefore_o care_n and_o strive_v shall_v be_v use_v in_o it_o the_o body_n be_v make_v of_o dust_n it_o will_v return_v to_o dust_n again_o not_o only_o in_o the_o final_a dissolution_n but_o also_o in_o the_o present_a inclination_n it_o now_o lean_v to_o the_o earth_n and_o rest_v on_o the_o earth_n man_n be_v deep_o in_o love_n with_o his_o own_o element_n and_o strong_o tie_v to_o it_o in_o his_o affection_n it_o be_v say_v of_o one_o that_o be_v one_o of_o three_o who_o demand_v of_o the_o orracle_n which_o shall_v be_v chief_a and_o hear_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v the_o man_n that_o first_o shall_v kiss_v his_o mother_n he_o fall_v down_o and_o kiss_v the_o earth_n as_o account_v it_o the_o common_a mother_n of_o all_o man_n be_v so_o in_o love_n with_o the_o earth_n that_o they_o embrace_v it_o and_o as_o it_o be_v kiss_v it_o in_o their_o affection_n as_o a_o mother_n out_o of_o who_o womb_n they_o have_v their_o beginning_n although_o the_o oracle_n of_o god_n word_n condemn_v this_o folly_n and_o teach_v they_o that_o wise_a man_n throughout_o which_o teach_v we_o the_o vanity_n and_o vexation_n of_o spirit_n that_o be_v in_o earthly_a thing_n and_o to_o see_v and_o admire_v the_o treasure_n and_o riches_n of_o god_n kingdom_n that_o apprehend_v better_a thing_n we_o may_v make_v better_a account_n of_o these_o sect_n 5._o v._o in_o as_o much_o as_o god_n make_v our_o body_n we_o must_v yield_v up_o our_o body_n to_o his_o service_n for_o god_n make_v all_o thing_n for_o himself_o say_v the_o scripture_n he_o make_v not_o the_o body_n for_o the_o devil_n nor_o for_o the_o world_n nor_o for_o lust_n nor_o for_o drunkenness_n but_o for_o himself_o let_v we_o well_o consider_v this_o and_o learn_v to_o give_v god_n his_o due_n the_o idolater_n will_v bow_v with_o his_o body_n to_o idol_n and_o say_v that_o he_o keep_v his_o heart_n to_o god_n but_o he_o must_v know_v that_o god_n make_v the_o body_n as_o well_o as_o the_o soul_n and_o if_o he_o make_v all_o thing_n for_o himself_o than_o the_o body_n as_o well_o as_o any_o other_o thing_n the_o profane_a person_n that_o abuse_v his_o tongue_n to_o swear_v wanton_a wicked_a discourse_n to_o rail_v scoff_a etc._n etc._n the_o adulterer_n which_o sin_v against_o the_o whole_a body_n as_o the_o apostle_n show_v the_o drunkard_n who_o abuse_v his_o body_n to_o excess_n of_o swill_v and_o drink_v the_o wanton_a that_o abuse_v his_o eye_n to_o careless_a wander_a and_o open_v his_o ear_n to_o vanity_n he_o that_o please_v his_o palate_n and_o love_v his_o pleasure_n more_o than_o god_n he_o that_o think_v his_o body_n give_v he_o for_o no_o other_o purpose_n but_o either_o to_o drudge_n about_o earthly_a thing_n or_o to_o â—ast_v of_o earthly_a delight_n even_o such_o a_o one_o be_v apt_a to_o say_v he_o have_v a_o good_a heart_n towards_o god_n but_o be_v not_o deceive_v god_n make_v this_o body_n for_o himself_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o abuse_v any_o part_n of_o the_o body_n to_o his_o dishonour_n nor_o make_v any_o member_n of_o it_o a_o instrument_n of_o unrighteousness_n but_o to_o give_v up_o the_o member_n of_o our_o body_n as_o instrument_n of_o righteousness_n unto_o holiness_n let_v we_o not_o think_v a_o little_a pain_n of_o the_o body_n too_o much_o to_o bestow_v in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n in_o prayer_n in_o humiliation_n etc._n etc._n but_o let_v we_o glorify_v god_n as_o in_o our_o soul_n especial_o so_o in_o our_o body_n also_o for_o they_o be_v god_n as_o well_o as_o our_o soul_n sect_n 6._o vi_o in_o that_o god_n make_v the_o body_n care_n must_v be_v use_v to_o preserve_v and_o not_o to_o destroy_v thy_o own_o body_n or_o thy_o brother_n we_o must_v not_o pull_v down_o this_o tabernacle_n which_o god_n himself_o have_v pitch_v but_o must_v leave_v it_o to_o his_o dispose_n use_v all_o lawful_a mean_n to_o keep_v it_o up_o and_o to_o preserve_v it_o strong_a until_o he_o please_v to_o dissolve_v it_o shun_v intemperancy_n and_o excess_n in_o thing_n that_o please_v the_o appetite_n in_o meat_n and_o drink_n etc._n etc._n use_v those_o mean_n which_o god_n have_v give_v thou_o to_o repair_v this_o house_n which_o god_n himself_o have_v build_v for_o thy_o soul_n to_o dwell_v in_o let_v the_o life_n and_o body_n of_o another_o be_v precious_a in_o thy_o sight_n and_o do_v thy_o endeavour_n to_o preserve_v it_o and_o let_v we_o know_v that_o in_o some_o case_n not_o to_o save_v life_n be_v to_o destroy_v viz._n when_o there_o be_v special_a mean_n call_v and_o opportunity_n to_o do_v it_o in_o time_n of_o necessity_n some_o mean_n must_v be_v use_v to_o prevent_v the_o famish_v of_o many_o therefore_o at_o such_o time_n we_o shall_v free_o give_v without_o grudge_v to_o the_o relief_n of_o other_o remember_v that_o it_o be_v for_o the_o preservation_n of_o those_o body_n which_o god_n have_v make_v and_o let_v this_o keep_v thou_o from_o lay_v violent_a hand_n on_o thy_o own_o body_n it_o be_v a_o loud_a cry_a sin_n to_o destroy_v another_o body_n because_o god_n have_v make_v it_o but_o most_o horrible_a to_o destroy_v thy_o own_o since_o god_n have_v make_v it_o and_o have_v give_v thou_o a_o special_a charge_n to_o keep_v it_o moreover_o since_o god_n have_v make_v the_o body_n let_v we_o rely_v upon_o he_o for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o the_o body_n he_o have_v make_v it_o and_o he_o will_v keep_v it_o he_o have_v give_v a_o mouth_n and_o he_o will_v give_v meat_n he_o have_v give_v a_o back_n and_o he_o will_v clothe_v it_o thus_o may_v a_o christian_a that_o have_v recover_v his_o forfeiture_n in_o christ_n reason_n from_o the_o love_n and_o promise_v of_o god_n and_o therefore_o in_o hard_a time_n our_o want_n shall_v be_v special_a motive_n to_o drive_v we_o home_o to_o god_n through_o christ_n that_o be_v in_o he_o we_o may_v assure_v ourselves_o of_o all_o needful_a supply_n for_o the_o body_n from_o his_o hand_n that_o make_v it_o there_o be_v not_o the_o poor_a the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o then_o of_o its_o power_n and_o faculty_n 1._o for_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v a_o spirit_n and_o herein_o most_o like_a unto_o the_o angel_n of_o any_o other_o creature_n and_o though_o the_o wise_a man_n do_v communicate_v this_o name_n to_o the_o life_n of_o a_o beast_n yet_o he_o show_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o these_o two_o it_o go_v upward_o it_o be_v present_v before_o the_o lord_n in_o judgement_n after_o its_o departure_n from_o the_o body_n 2._o it_o be_v such_o a_o spirit_n as_o can_v subsist_v alone_o of_o it_o self_n out_o of_o the_o body_n so_o the_o apostle_n make_v mention_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o just_a man_n make_v perfect_a heb._n 12._o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o saint_n now_o in_o heaven_n who_o body_n rest_v in_o the_o dust_n and_o this_o show_v the_o excellent_a matter_n of_o man_n spirit_n far_o above_o the_o life_n of_o the_o beast_n or_o any_o unreasonable_a creature_n that_o it_o can_v subsist_v when_o it_o be_v sever_v from_o the_o body_n this_o show_v that_o it_o do_v not_o depend_v upon_o the_o body_n nor_o be_v extract_v out_o of_o it_o but_o rather_o that_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o body_n depend_v on_o it_o it_o can_v live_v without_o the_o body_n but_o the_o body_n without_o it_o rot_v putrefy_v and_o moulder_v away_o into_o dust_n dust_n return_v to_o dust_n as_o it_o be_v say_v the_o wise_a man_n and_o the_o spirit_n return_v to_o he_o that_o give_v it_o eccles._n 12._o 3._o it_o be_v a_o immortal_a spirit_n so_o this_o very_a place_n show_v that_o when_o dust_n return_v to_o dust_n when_o the_o body_n dissolve_v than_o the_o spirit_n live_v and_o yield_v up_o itself_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o so_o the_o scripture_n show_v both_o in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o godly_a and_o of_o the_o wicked_a the_o one_o shall_v go_v into_o life_n eternal_a and_o the_o other_o into_o everlasting_a punishment_n sect_n 2._o in_o the_o next_o place_n let_v we_o speak_v of_o the_o power_n and_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n here_o i_o shall_v speak_v first_o of_o those_o which_o be_v common_a to_o it_o with_o other_o creature_n viz._n those_o which_o they_o call_v vegetative_a and_o sensitive_a which_o be_v find_v in_o the_o beast_n and_o bird_n these_o i_o call_v faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n although_o for_o my_o own_o part_n i_o concieve_v they_o not_o to_o be_v proper_o inherent_a in_o the_o reasonable_a soul_n but_o rather_o in_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o body_n for_o the_o intellectual_a soul_n be_v a_o spirit_n i_o can_v see_v how_o these_o brutish_a affection_n such_o as_o many_o of_o these_o be_v can_v be_v inherent_a in_o it_o especial_o because_o many_o of_o they_o as_o the_o faculty_n of_o attraction_n retention_n
