extreme_a danger_n when_o as_o therefore_o the_o shipmaster_n so_o sharp_o thus_o first_o inveygh_v against_o jonas_n and_o then_o again_o all_o the_o other_o shipman_n with_o one_o voice_n begin_v to_o bait_n he_o certain_o we_o perceive_v that_o he_o be_v make_v subject_n to_o the_o censure_n of_o all_o man_n because_o he_o will_v take_v away_o from_o god_n his_o empery_n or_o government_n if_o therefore_o at_o any_o time_n the_o like_a happen_v unto_o we_o that_o the_o lord_n make_v we_o subject_a to_o the_o reproachful_a taunt_n of_o man_n when_o as_o we_o will_v privy_o escape_v or_o avoid_v his_o judgement_n let_v we_o not_o marvel_n but_o even_o as_o jonas_n here_o gentle_o answer_v and_o neither_o murmur_v nor_o resist_v so_o also_o at_o the_o length_n with_o the_o true_a spirit_n of_o meekness_n let_v every_o of_o we_o acknowledge_v our_o sin_n when_o they_o be_v reprove_v yea_o even_o although_o child_n be_v our_o judge_n or_o if_o any_o of_o the_o most_o base_a or_o contemptible_a rise_v against_o we_o let_v we_o suffer_v it_o patient_o and_o let_v we_o know_v this_o kind_n of_o controwler_n happen_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n now_o it_o without_o all_o doubt_n fear_n be_v the_o only_a let_v that_o immediate_o they_o cast_v not_o jonas_n into_o the_o sea_n for_o when_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o for_o his_o offence_n god_n be_v angry_a with_o they_o all_o why_o deliver_v they_o not_o themselves_o of_o that_o great_a offence_n that_o therefore_o they_o stay_v in_o so_o great_a danger_n and_o straight_o way_n dare_v not_o snatch_v up_o jonas_n thereby_o be_v it_o evident_a true_o that_o they_o be_v withhoulden_a with_o the_o reverence_n of_o god_n whereof_o i_o speak_v therefore_o demand_n they_o what_o be_v necessary_a to_o be_v do_v what_o therefore_o shall_v we_o do_v unto_o thou_o â—at_a that_o the_o sea_n may_v depart_v from_o we_o for_o the_o sea_n go_v say_v he_o by_o the_o verb_n of_o go_v jonas_n understand_v that_o the_o sea_n be_v unquiet_a for_o when_o the_o sea_n be_v calm_v it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v quiet_a but_o when_o it_o be_v troublesome_a then_o have_v it_o diverse_a motion_n &_o toss_n the_o sea_n therefore_o do_v go_v or_o wrought_v than_o it_o be_v tempestuous_a we_o see_v then_o that_o god_n be_v not_o content_v with_o the_o ignominy_n of_o jonas_n but_o will_v also_o further_o persecute_v his_o fault_n jonas_n therefore_o must_v be_v bring_v to_o the_o punishment_n which_o he_o have_v deserve_v although_o myraculouslie_o he_o be_v afterward_o deliver_v from_o death_n as_o we_o shall_v see_v in_o place_n convenient_a jonas_n then_o answer_v take_v i_o and_o cast_v i_o into_o the_o sea_n and_o it_o shall_v depart_v from_o you_o here_o rise_v a_o question_n whether_o jonas_n ought_v of_o his_o own_o accord_n to_o offer_v himself_o to_o death_n for_o this_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o token_n of_o desperation_n for_o he_o may_v submit_v himself_o to_o their_o censure_n but_o here_o as_o it_o be_v he_o prick_v they_o forward_o cast_v i_o say_v he_o into_o the_o sea_n for_o otherwise_o then_o by_o my_o punishment_n you_o shall_v not_o please_v god._n he_o seem_v like_o a_o desperate_a man_n when_o so_o of_o his_o own_o mind_n he_o hasten_v to_o his_o end_n but_o without_o doubt_n jonas_n perceive_v that_o from_o above_o he_o be_v require_v to_o punishment_n it_o be_v uncertain_a whether_o he_o then_o conceive_v any_o hope_n of_o safeguard_n that_o be_v whether_o with_o present_a confidence_n he_o rest_v himself_o upon_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n but_o whatsoever_o it_o be_v we_o may_v yet_o gather_v that_o he_o come_v forth_o to_o death_n because_o he_o understand_v and_o be_v certain_o persuade_v that_o he_o be_v thereunto_o soommon_v after_o a_o sort_n even_o by_o the_o manifest_a voice_n of_o god_n and_o so_o it_o be_v not_o doubtful_a but_o that_o patient_o he_o undertake_v the_o judgement_n that_o the_o lord_n have_v bring_v against_o he_o therefore_o say_v he_o take_v i_o and_o cast_v i_o into_o the_o sea_n and_o afterward_o the_o sea_n shall_v depart_v from_o you_o here_o jonas_n not_o only_o pronounce_v that_o god_n may_v be_v pacify_v by_o his_o death_n because_o the_o lot_n fall_v upon_o he_o but_o else_o otherwise_o know_v he_o that_o his_o death_n may_v suffice_v in_o steed_n of_o sacrifice_n that_o the_o tempest_n may_v cease_v and_o to_o the_o same_o end_n follow_v the_o reason_n i_o know_v say_v he_o that_o for_o my_o sake_n this_o tempest_n be_v upon_o you_o when_o as_o he_o say_v he_o know_v this_o can_v be_v refer_v unto_o the_o lot_n for_o this_o knowledge_n be_v common_a unto_o they_o all_o but_o jonas_n here_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o prophecy_n speak_v and_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o he_o confirm_v the_o thing_n that_o i_o first_o touch_v even_o the_o god_n of_o israel_n to_o be_v the_o chief_a and_o only_a king_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n this_o certainty_n of_o knowledge_n therefore_o of_o the_o which_o jonas_n speak_v ought_v first_o to_o be_v refer_v to_o his_o conscience_n second_o to_o the_o instruction_n of_o godliness_n wherewith_o he_o be_v endue_v but_o now_o we_o may_v gather_v out_o of_o these_o word_n a_o most_o profitable_a doctrine_n even_o that_o jonas_n here_o reason_v not_o the_o matter_n with_o god_n neither_o contemptuous_o do_v frete_z that_o god_n so_o severe_o punish_v he_o for_o he_o take_v upon_o he_o willing_o both_o the_o guiltiness_n and_o the_o punishment_n even_o as_o first_o when_o he_o say_v i_o be_o the_o worshipper_n of_o the_o true_a god_n how_o confess_v he_o the_o true_a god_n who_o most_o heavy_a hand_n he_o at_o that_o time_n feel_v but_o we_o see_v jonas_n so_o to_o be_v subdue_v that_o he_o leave_v not_o of_o to_o yield_v unto_o god_n his_o just_a honour_n yea_o although_o present_a death_n be_v before_o his_o eye_n although_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n burn_v against_o he_o yet_o we_o see_v as_o we_o have_v say_v how_o he_o give_v unto_o god_n his_o honour_n so_o the_o same_o in_o this_o place_n be_v repeat_v behold_v say_v he_o i_o know_v that_o for_o my_o sake_n this_o great_a tempest_n be_v ligted_a upon_o you_o he_o certain_o murmur_v not_o against_o god_n that_o upon_o himself_o take_v all_o the_o blame_n this_o therefore_o be_v the_o true_a confession_n of_o repentance_n when_o as_o we_o acknowledge_v god_n and_o willing_o also_o witness_v before_o man_n that_o he_o be_v just_a although_o to_o our_o fleshly_a sense_n he_o seem_v cruel_o to_o rage_n against_o we_o when_o as_o we_o geve_v unto_o he_o the_o praise_n of_o righteousness_n then_o true_o do_v we_o show_v our_o repentance_n for_o except_v the_o anger_n of_o god_n constrain_v we_o to_o this_o humility_n always_o we_o shall_v be_v fill_v with_o bitterness_n and_o howsoever_o we_o wax_v silent_a for_o a_o time_n our_o heart_n notwithstanding_o will_v be_v contemptuous_a and_o rebellious_a therefore_o this_o humility_n always_o follow_v repentance_n even_o till_o the_o sinner_n prostrate_v himself_o before_o god_n &_o willing_o take_v upon_o he_o his_o offence_n &_o endevour_v not_o by_o shift_a sleight_n to_o escape_v and_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n that_o jonas_n so_o far_o humble_v himself_o for_o we_o see_v the_o shypman_n to_o do_v the_o same_o when_o they_o say_v that_o the_o lot_n be_v to_o be_v cast_v add_v withal_o come_v &_o
man_n but_o as_o the_o messenger_n of_o god_n and_o this_o also_o may_v bend_v their_o heart_n that_o they_o may_v understand_v although_o no_o mortal_a man_n can_v punish_v their_o wickedness_n yet_o that_o they_o can_v not_o escape_v the_o vengeance_n of_o god_n this_o therefore_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o the_o lord_n pronounce_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o judge_n of_o nineveh_n and_o also_o it_o admonish_v that_o although_o the_o ninevite_n do_v flatter_v themselves_o and_o do_v bear_v now_o the_o plause_n and_o glory_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n by_o reason_n of_o their_o power_n all_o this_o notwithstanding_o to_o be_v of_o no_o moment_n or_o force_n because_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n their_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n ascend_v into_o the_o heaven_n therefore_o when_o we_o be_v rebuke_v there_o be_v no_o reason_n why_o we_o shall_v turn_v our_o eye_n unto_o man_n hither_o or_o thither_o but_o immediate_o we_o ought_v to_o offer_v ourselves_o to_o be_v examine_v of_o god_n yea_o we_o ourselves_o ought_v to_o make_v of_o ourselves_o a_o voluntary_a examination_n which_o thing_n god_n of_o we_o require_v so_o shall_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o we_o nourish_v not_o our_o sin_n with_o wicked_a flattery_n as_o the_o hypocrite_n always_o look_v about_o on_o the_o right_a and_o left_a side_n and_o never_o lift_v up_o their_o sense_n into_o heaven_n let_v we_o go_v forward_o the_o text_n verse_n 3._o ¶_o and_o jonas_n rise_v up_o to_o fly_v that_o he_o may_v flee_v to_o tharsis_n from_o the_o face_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o he_o come_v down_o to_o japho_n and_o he_o find_v a_o ship_n which_o pass_v over_o to_o tharsis_n and_o he_o pay_v the_o hire_n that_o be_v the_o fare_v the_o price_n of_o the_o carriage_n and_o he_o go_v down_o into_o it_o that_o he_o god_n if_o he_o be_v on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o sea_n but_o he_o will_v as_o it_o be_v flee_v the_o light_n of_o this_o present_a life_n when_o he_o go_v into_o a_o strange_a region_n neither_o be_v it_o any_o doubt_n but_o that_o he_o be_v not_o only_o of_o a_o trouble_a mind_n but_o plain_o astonish_v when_o he_o undertake_v such_o a_o devise_n the_o question_n be_v why_o jonas_n so_o flee_v from_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n the_o jew_n as_o they_o couldlie_a trifle_n in_o matter_n divine_a say_v that_o he_o fear_v if_o he_o shall_v come_v to_o nineveh_n that_o he_o shall_v unaccustomed_a the_o prophet_n to_o be_v take_v away_o from_o the_o elect_a people_n and_o send_v to_o profane_a nation_n when_o peter_n be_v send_v to_o cornelius_n 10.17_o although_o he_o have_v be_v admonish_v before_o of_o the_o future_a call_n of_o the_o gentile_n yet_o he_o doubt_v and_o stay_v until_o by_o a_o vision_n as_o it_o be_v with_o violence_n he_o be_v constrain_v what_o to_o be_v a_o teacher_n to_o cornelius_n when_o jonas_n be_v send_v to_o nineveh_n to_o a_o city_n so_o populous_a what_o may_v he_o think_v with_o himself_o therefore_o the_o novelty_n of_o the_o matter_n without_o doubt_n may_v great_o shake_v the_o mind_n of_o the_o holy_a prophet_n and_o make_v he_o that_o void_a of_o counsel_n he_o may_v flee_v or_o convey_v himself_o else_o whether_o this_o thing_n also_o distrust_n may_v cause_v for_o what_o hope_n have_v he_o that_o that_o people_n can_v be_v convert_v which_o do_v even_o triumph_n in_o the_o lycenciousnesse_n thereof_o for_o he_o have_v first_o try_v the_o hardness_n of_o the_o elect_a people_n he_o be_v faithful_o occupy_v in_o do_v of_o his_o duty_n he_o have_v pretermit_v nothing_o whereby_o he_o may_v establish_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o true_a piety_n in_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n but_o profit_v little_a and_o yet_o the_o jew_n be_v call_v even_o from_o the_o womb_n what_o then_o may_v he_o look_v for_o when_o the_o lord_n take_v he_o away_o to_o the_o ninevite_n for_o there_o reign_v unbridled_a lasciviousness_n and_o then_o be_v there_o extreme_a blindness_n they_o have_v not_o at_o any_o time_n any_o taste_n of_o the_o worship_v of_o god_n last_o they_o be_v drown_v in_o profound_a darkness_n and_o the_o devil_n reign_v by_o all_o mean_n there_o this_o distrust_n therefore_o may_v vex_v or_o break_v the_o mind_n of_o jonas_n that_o he_o obey_v not_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n the_o imbecility_n or_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh_n may_v also_o hinder_v he_o whereby_o he_o follow_v not_o his_o lawful_a call_n he_o may_v reason_v thus_o what_o true_o i_o shall_v come_v into_o the_o principal_a seat_n of_o that_o monarchy_n which_o this_o day_n tread_v all_o the_o earth_n block_n and_o this_o be_v not_o superfluous_a as_o i_o say_v before_o that_o he_o declare_v that_o city_n to_o be_v great_a god_n true_o be_v willing_a to_o remove_v the_o offence_n but_o jonas_n argue_v on_o the_o contrary_a part_n i_o see_v sharp_a war_n shall_v come_v upon_o i_o yea_o a_o heap_n of_o trouble_n to_o invade_v i_o which_o a_o hundred_o time_n may_v overwhelm_v i_o when_o the_o lord_n not_o in_o vain_a foretell_v he_o of_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o city_n and_o although_o he_o may_v conceive_v hope_n if_o they_o be_v rebuke_v that_o they_o will_v yield_v due_a honour_n unto_o god_n yet_o he_o confess_v that_o this_o come_v as_o a_o let_v into_o his_o mind_n that_o he_o shall_v not_o go_v forward_o in_o the_o course_n of_o his_o call_n therefore_o aswell_o distrust_n as_o fear_v of_o the_o flesh_n do_v delay_n or_o stay_n jonas_n and_o that_o novelty_n or_o strangeness_n may_v even_o as_o i_o have_v say_v already_o move_v he_o that_o he_o have_v rather_o as_o it_o be_v enter_v the_o grave_n then_o to_o undertake_v that_o office_n end_n which_o in_o a_o manner_n be_v void_a of_o all_o reason_n for_o to_o what_o end_n be_v the_o prophet_n send_v but_o that_o they_o may_v profit_v somewhat_o by_o their_o labour_n and_o may_v reap_v some_o fruit_n but_o jonas_n hope_v for_o no_o such_o thing_n moreover_o to_o the_o prophet_n be_v give_v some_o authority_n or_o at_o the_o least_o some_o liberty_n to_o teach_v but_o jonas_n think_v that_o all_o way_n to_o enter_v be_v shut_v from_o he_o and_o further_o jonas_n think_v that_o this_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o lord_n for_o he_o have_v choose_v one_o only_a people_n to_o himself_o and_o now_o jonas_n think_v that_o he_o be_v as_o it_o be_v tie_v to_o one_o stake_n when_o he_o be_v ordain_v a_o teacher_n in_o his_o own_o country_n he_o can_v not_o therefore_o be_v take_v thence_o to_o another_o place_n but_o he_o feel_v in_o himself_o great_a resistance_n i_o therefore_o think_v that_o jonas_n obey_v not_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n partly_o because_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh_n partly_o the_o strangeness_n of_o the_o case_n three_o lie_v his_o despair_n of_o fruit_n or_o success_n of_o his_o doctrine_n be_v a_o hindrance_n unto_o he_o but_o now_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o he_o sin_v or_o offend_v grievous_o for_o the_o
verse_n where_o he_o say_v if_o peradventure_o god_n will_v be_v favourable_a unto_o us._n here_o the_o shipmaster_n restrain_v not_o this_o talk_n to_o the_o god_n of_o jonas_n but_o speak_v simple_o of_o one_o god_n for_o how_o soever_o the_o world_n by_o his_o dissension_n tear_v or_o divide_v god_n that_o then_o jonas_n worship_v a_o god_n contrary_n to_o other_o there_o be_v to_o be_v short_a a_o innumerable_a company_n of_o god_n among_o the_o shipman_n yet_o say_v the_o shipmaster_n if_o the_o lord_n peradventure_o now_o than_o he_o acknowledge_v some_o one_o principal_a god_n howsoever_o every_o man_n notwithstanding_o have_v their_o own_o proper_a gods._n further_n that_o there_o have_v be_v always_o a_o certain_a general_a principle_n receive_v by_o the_o consent_n of_o all_o man_n we_o see_v that_o it_o be_v most_o â—â—ue_a that_o i_o have_v say_v even_o that_o by_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n the_o world_n be_v govern_v then_o that_o the_o life_n &_o safeguard_n of_o man_n be_v in_o his_o hand_n but_o for_o asmuch_o as_o they_o be_v too_o far_o off_o from_o god_n then_o they_o do_v not_o only_o slow_o creep_v but_o more_o prone_a do_v they_o bend_v to_o the_o earth_n then_o aspire_v unto_o heaven_n constant_a be_v they_o also_o and_o always_o waver_v they_o therefore_o seek_v they_o god_n nigh_o at_o hand_n and_o when_o they_o can_v find_v none_o then_o dare_v they_o be_v bold_a even_o to_o make_v they_o some_o when_o he_o say_v if_o peradventure_o we_o have_v see_v already_o that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n use_v this_o phrase_n although_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o only_a difficulty_n be_v note_v here_o notwithstanding_o be_v it_o probable_a that_o the_o shipmaster_n be_v as_o profane_a man_n be_v wont_a perplex_a and_o doubtful_a and_o can_v determine_v nothing_o certain_o of_o the_o aid_n of_o god_n therefore_o while_o he_o thus_o waver_v in_o mind_n he_o say_v that_o all_o remedy_n be_v to_o be_v try_v and_o here_o as_o it_o be_v in_o a_o glass_n may_v we_o see_v how_o wretched_a be_v the_o estate_n of_o all_o those_o which_o call_v not_o upon_o god_n with_o a_o certain_a and_o sure_a faith_n they_o cry_v true_o unto_o god_n because_o the_o knowledge_n of_o nature_n enforce_v they_o thereto_o but_o they_o know_v not_o whether_o by_o their_o cry_n they_o profit_v any_o thing_n or_o no_o they_o do_v repete_fw-la their_o prayer_n but_o they_o know_v not_o whether_o their_o word_n vanish_v away_o in_o the_o air_n or_o whether_o they_o come_v unto_o god_n so_o do_v the_o shipmaster_n declare_v thus_o he_o have_v a_o doubtful_a mind_n say_v if_o peradventure_o god_n be_v favourable_a unto_o we_o then_o also_o call_v upon_o thy_o god._n if_o he_o have_v be_v certain_o persuade_v that_o he_o have_v call_v upon_o for_o themselves_o but_o i_o worship_v god_n the_o creator_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n he_o call_v he_o god_n of_o the_o heaven_n that_o be_v which_o only_o dwell_v in_o the_o heaven_n &_o see_v that_o other_o imagine_a heaven_n to_o be_v stuff_v with_o a_o great_a multitude_n of_o gods._n here_o jonas_n set_v against_o they_o one_o only_a god_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v fain_o for_o your_o pleasure_n a_o innumerable_a company_n of_o god_n yet_o be_v there_o one_o which_o bear_v the_o chief_a principality_n in_o the_o heaven_n he_o also_o it_o be_v which_o make_v the_o sea_n and_o the_o dry_a land_n now_o than_o we_o perceive_v what_o jonas_n intend_v by_o these_o word_n for_o even_o here_o he_o declare_v that_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n if_o so_o grievous_o god_n do_v take_v vengeance_n we_o see_v then_o what_o jonas_n mean_v when_o he_o speak_v of_o great_a fear_n although_o each_o be_v to_o be_v mark_v that_o they_o fear_v even_o for_o that_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o gather_v out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n that_o the_o god_n of_o israel_n be_v the_o only_a maker_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n then_o that_o which_o follow_v of_o great_a fear_n must_v hither_o be_v refer_v even_o as_o i_o have_v already_o say_v unto_o a_o earnest_n and_o serious_a fear_n see_v that_o all_o fear_v immediate_o vanish_v away_o from_o those_o which_o believe_v not_o but_o where_o as_o the_o shipman_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o passenger_n do_v chide_v jonas_n here_o the_o lord_n pay_v unto_o he_o the_o reward_n which_o he_o have_v deserve_v he_o have_v be_v profane_a yea_o barbarous_a man_n which_o charise_v his_o sin_n and_o which_o be_v his_o censor_n and_o judge_n the_o which_o thing_n also_o we_o see_v oftentimes_o to_o happen_v for_o they_o the_o reproach_n of_o the_o common_a people_n they_o be_v make_v manifest_a every_o where_o by_o the_o finger_n at_o the_o length_n they_o be_v draw_v to_o the_o gallows_n and_o the_o hangman_n be_v
but_o almost_o condemn_v yet_o persuade_v with_o himself_o that_o god_n for_o all_o this_o notwithstanding_o will_v be_v merciful_a unto_o he_o if_o he_o flee_v for_o succour_v unto_o he_o we_o see_v therefore_o that_o jonas_n by_o chance_n as_o hypocrite_n be_v wont_v to_o have_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o their_o mouth_n when_o they_o be_v oppress_v but_o he_o pray_v serious_o because_o he_o be_v persuade_v that_o god_n will_v be_v merciful_a unto_o he_o now_o it_o be_v to_o be_v mark_v that_o the_o prayer_n of_o jonas_n be_v not_o utter_v in_o these_o word_n which_o here_o be_v mention_v but_o jonas_n while_o he_o be_v in_o the_o belly_n of_o the_o whale_n meditate_a with_o himself_o these_o cogitation_n after_o what_o sort_n therefore_o he_o be_v affect_v he_o declare_v in_o this_o canticle_n and_o we_o shall_v certain_o see_v that_o he_o be_v draw_v every_o way_n as_o in_o temptation_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o our_o mind_n shall_v be_v move_v hither_o and_o thither_o for_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n enjoy_v not_o the_o victory_n without_o great_a trouble_n we_o must_v therefore_o play_v the_o soldier_n &_o that_o valiant_o that_o we_o may_v get_v the_o victory_n jonas_n therefore_o in_o this_o canticle_n show_v that_o he_o be_v toss_v with_o great_a disquietness_n &_o sharp_a torment_n but_o with_o all_o he_o show_v that_o this_o principle_n be_v steadfast_o fix_v in_o his_o mind_n that_o god_n must_v be_v seek_v unto_o and_o again_o that_o he_o seek_v he_o not_o in_o vain_a because_o he_o be_v always_o ready_a to_o help_v those_o that_o be_v he_o as_o often_o as_o they_o shall_v cry_v unto_o he_o and_o therefore_o he_o say_v i_o cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n when_o i_o be_v in_o trouble_n and_o he_o answer_v i_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o signify_v that_o he_o be_v so_o enclose_v in_o the_o grave_n that_o there_o appear_v no_o way_n out_o what_o be_v the_o belly_n of_o the_o grave_n even_o the_o most_o inward_a and_o deep_a part_n of_o the_o grave_n and_o when_o jonas_n be_v in_o this_o state_n and_o case_n he_o say_v that_o he_o be_v hear_v of_o the_o lord_n and_o here_o again_o it_o be_v expedient_a to_o repeat_v that_o which_o i_o late_o touch_v even_o that_o jonas_n although_o in_o most_o grievous_a tentation_n be_v not_o so_o oppress_v but_o that_o his_o prayer_n escape_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n he_o pray_v therefore_o and_o not_o simple_o pray_v but_o he_o also_o express_v his_o vehemency_n and_o affection_n when_o he_o say_v that_o he_o cry_v and_o make_v a_o strong_a noise_n and_o it_o be_v no_o they_o no_o â—ast_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n he_o may_v rather_o a_o hundred_o time_n terrify_v the_o ninevite_n than_o once_o call_v they_o to_o the_o faith_n but_o the_o speech_n may_v be_v synechdochiall_a that_o be_v put_v part_n for_o the_o whole_a for_o it_o be_v not_o whole_a faith_n when_o as_o man_n be_v call_v to_o repentance_n do_v submissivelie_o humble_a themselves_o before_o we_o may_v certain_o think_v that_o they_o profit_v more_o by_o the_o preach_n of_o jonas_n then_o that_o they_o shall_v only_o understand_v that_o they_o be_v culpable_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n this_o do_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n chief_o shine_v that_o he_o be_v appease_v so_o soon_o as_o man_n repent_v and_o also_o in_o that_o he_o offer_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o father_n unto_o they_o aught_v jonas_n to_o have_v prefer_v his_o estimation_n before_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n i_o answer_v that_o the_o prophet_n so_o be_v not_o addict_v to_o himself_o but_o that_o always_o the_o study_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n obtain_v the_o high_a degree_n in_o his_o mind_n this_o be_v certain_a but_o he_o join_v his_o ministry_n with_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o worthy_o because_o it_o depend_v upon_o his_o authority_n jonas_n when_o he_o enter_v into_o nineveh_n he_o cry_v not_o as_o a_o private_a man_n but_o profess_v that_o he_o be_v send_v from_o god._n now_o if_o the_o preach_n of_o jonas_n be_v find_v false_a the_o reproach_n redound_v upon_o the_o very_a author_n of_o his_o call_n that_o be_v upon_o god_n there_o be_v no_o doubt_n therefore_o but_o that_o jonas_n take_v it_o grievous_o that_o the_o name_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v lay_v open_a to_o the_o reproach_n of_o the_o gentile_n as_o though_o he_o shall_v make_v they_o afraid_a of_o nothing_o and_o be_v a_o excellent_a intent_n if_o we_o may_v be_v judge_n or_o if_o the_o matter_n be_v esteem_v according_a to_o our_o sense_n but_o by_o and_o by_o we_o shall_v see_v that_o it_o be_v condemn_v by_o the_o mouth_n of_o god_n let_v we_o learn_v therefore_o not_o to_o arrogate_v unto_o ourselves_o judgement_n in_o those_o thing_n which_o pass_v our_o capacity_n but_o to_o submit_v our_o mind_n unto_o god_n and_o to_o desire_v of_o he_o the_o spirit_n of_o discretion_n and_o judgement_n how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o jonas_n so_o shall_v fret_v against_o god_n but_o that_o he_o be_v inflame_v with_o the_o study_n of_o his_o glory_n but_o this_o be_v a_o inconsiderate_a zeal_n because_o he_o himself_o will_v be_v arbiter_n and_o judge_n he_o ought_v rather_o to_o have_v submit_v the_o mean_a time_n let_v we_o desire_v of_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o will_v at_o the_o length_n convert_v those_o reproach_n unto_o his_o own_o glory_n but_o let_v not_o we_o murmur_v &_o grudge_n as_o many_o do_v which_o by_o and_o by_o begin_v to_o chide_v against_o god_n as_o often_o as_o a_o thing_n be_v otherwise_o govern_v and_o direct_v than_o they_o themselves_o list_v or_o do_v think_v but_o only_o for_o that_o he_o will_v not_o have_v his_o sacred_a name_n violate_v and_o defile_v for_o that_o he_o will_v not_o willing_o be_v a_o minister_n of_o that_o preach_n which_o may_v open_v the_o mouth_n of_o ungodly_a &_o profane_a man_n to_o laugh_v god_n himself_o to_o scorn_v when_o as_o say_v he_o i_o hope_v for_o none_o other_o profit_n of_o my_o preach_n but_o even_o that_o the_o gentile_n may_v laugh_v god_n to_o scorn_v yea_o may_v tear_v in_o piece_n amongst_o they_o his_o holy_a name_n as_o if_o he_o be_v deceitful_a and_o vain_a therefore_o have_v i_o rather_o fly_v unto_o tharsis_n therefore_o here_o jonas_n do_v not_o altogether_o excuse_v himself_o for_o then_o to_o no_o purpose_n have_v his_o chastisement_n light_v upon_o he_o whereby_o he_o ought_v to_o
