man_n and_o woman_n that_o do_v expect_v help_n and_o salvation_n by_o christ_n shall_v come_v to_o he_o as_o the_o lord_n faith_n shall_v pitch_v upon_o he_o as_o omnipotent_a and_o omniscient_a i_o say_v it_o be_v necessary_a that_o they_o shall_v thus_o come_v to_o he_o that_o believe_v for_o else_o the_o foundation_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v overthrow_v there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o do_v deny_v this_o can_v lay_v a_o right_a foundation_n of_o faith_n no_o man_n that_o do_v not_o believe_v this_o that_o he_o be_v lord_n eternal_a god_n can_v lay_v a_o right_a foundation_n he_o do_v not_o lay_v that_o foundation_n which_o god_n have_v lay_v the_o foundation_n which_o god_n have_v lay_v be_v his_o son_n the_o eternal_a god_n he_o with_o who_o he_o enter_v into_o covenant_n and_o make_v a_o covenant_n with_o from_o eternity_n and_o therefore_o if_o there_o be_v any_o other_o foundation_n the_o foundation_n will_v not_o hold_v and_o indeed_o christ_n can_v be_v a_o foundation_n to_o bear_v up_o faith_n if_o he_o be_v not_o eternal_a god_n and_o lord_n equal_a with_o his_o father_n he_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o be_v trust_v and_o curse_a be_v he_o that_o trust_v in_o man_n and_o make_v flesh_n his_o arm_n and_o if_o christ_n have_v not_o be_v eternal_a god_n he_o can_v not_o be_v a_o fit_a foundation_n and_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o every_o soul_n that_o come_v to_o christ_n shall_v believe_v in_o he_o as_o lord_n in_o respect_n of_o that_o divine_a worship_n that_o be_v to_o be_v give_v to_o christ_n else_o he_o can_v worship_v christ_n aright_o nor_o give_v christ_n that_o honour_n that_o be_v due_a to_o he_o and_o so_o all_o his_o worship_n be_v lose_v three_o it_o be_v needful_a in_o respect_n of_o the_o benefit_n of_o christ_n satisfaction_n that_o man_n that_o come_v to_o christ_n must_v believe_v that_o he_o be_v eternal_a god_n and_o one_o with_o the_o father_n or_o else_o he_o can_v expect_v the_o benefit_n of_o christ_n satisfaction_n for_o if_o christ_n be_v not_o infinite_a god_n he_o can_v not_o have_v give_v satisfaction_n to_o infinite_a justice_n if_o christ_n be_v not_o god_n our_o sin_n be_v not_o purge_v away_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n be_v not_o infinite_a than_o no_o cover_n for_o our_o transgression_n no_o price_n then_o of_o a_o infinite_a value_n for_o the_o save_a soul_n no_o virtue_n in_o his_o blood_n for_o the_o take_v away_o of_o sin_n therefore_o they_o that_o do_v blasphemous_o deny_v christ_n to_o be_v eternal_a god_n they_o must_v deny_v the_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n and_o then_o he_o â—an_v perfect_a the_o work_n of_o our_o salvation_n the_o work_n of_o our_o salvation_n it_o be_v put_v into_o christ_n hand_n but_o if_o 〈◊〉_d be_v not_o eternal_a god_n there_o be_v little_a hope_n that_o he_o shall_v perfect_v the_o work_n of_o his_o people_n salvation_n 〈◊〉_d not_o possible_a he_o shall_v overcome_v all_o the_o enemy_n of_o his_o people_n salvation_n therefore_o you_o see_v â—hat_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o when_o any_o soul_n come_v to_o christ_n it_o shall_v come_v to_o he_o as_o lord_n so_o this_o woman_n do_v look_v upon_o he_o and_o close_o with_o he_o as_o lord_n over_o all_o as_o he_o be_v eternal_a god_n have_v the_o same_o power_n and_o knowledge_n with_o his_o father_n to_o who_o 〈◊〉_d due_a the_o same_o divine_a honour_n and_o who_o be_v the_o object_n of_o faith_n and_o therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o brethren_n look_v to_o it_o that_o your_o faith_n be_v right_o ground_v if_o it_o 〈◊〉_d not_o it_o will_v never_o hold_v if_o it_o be_v close_v with_o he_o as_o he_o be_v lord_n owâ—_n all_o infinite_a 〈◊〉_d equal_a with_o his_o father_n the_o dâ—â—_n have_v exceed_o endeavour_v to_o overturn_v 〈◊〉_d
you_o give_v he_o not_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v needful_a for_o the_o body_n what_o do_v it_o profit_n alas_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o make_v complaint_n to_o such_o what_o do_v it_o avail_v it_o may_v be_v some_o will_v pity_v with_o good_a word_n be_v you_o warm_v and_o fill_v but_o they_o give_v they_o not_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v needful_a for_o the_o body_n thus_o many_o a_o poor_a creature_n lose_v his_o labour_n three_o when_o a_o poor_a creature_n make_v complaint_n to_o man_n and_o cry_v to_o man_n it_o may_v be_v he_o shall_v make_v complaint_n to_o those_o that_o do_v pity_v he_o and_o will_v relieve_v he_o with_o all_o their_o heart_n but_o it_o be_v beyond_o their_o power_n to_o relieve_v and_o so_o if_o a_o poor_a man_n that_o want_v the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n it_o may_v be_v he_o go_v and_o make_v his_o complaint_n to_o another_o he_o pity_v he_o and_o will_v help_v he_o but_o he_o that_o have_v a_o will_n have_v not_o power_n many_o time_n and_o it_o be_v not_o in_o his_o hand_n to_o do_v it_o and_o he_o can_v uphold_v another_o estate_n but_o he_o must_v break_v his_o own_o many_o time_n it_o be_v so_o and_o so_o when_o they_o come_v and_o make_v complaint_n of_o the_o weakness_n and_o infirmity_n of_o their_o body_n it_o may_v be_v they_o be_v affect_v and_o they_o will_v help_v ah_o but_o it_o be_v beyond_o their_o power_n and_o so_o when_o a_o poor_a soul_n come_v and_o complain_v of_o distress_n of_o mind_n and_o show_v the_o wound_n of_o his_o spirit_n and_o lay_v they_o open_a it_o may_v be_v godly_a friend_n may_v pity_v you_o and_o desire_v to_o help_v you_o but_o their_o hand_n be_v toâ—_n short_a to_o carry_v the_o plaster_n to_o your_o heart_n and_o conscience_n and_o to_o cause_v it_o to_o stick_v there_o and_o therefore_o after_o all_o it_o will_v go_v away_o unsatisfied_a in_o all_o these_o cause_n they_o that_o will_v help_v you_o if_o they_o can_v they_o may_v say_v as_o the_o king_n of_o israel_n 2_o king_n 6._o 26_o 27._o the_o woman_n there_o come_v and_o make_v a_o sad_a complaint_n in_o the_o time_n of_o famine_n at_o verse_n 26._o and_o as_o the_o king_n of_o israel_n be_v pass_v by_o upon_o the_o wall_n there_o cry_v a_o woman_n unto_o he_o say_v help_n my_o lord_n o_o king_n and_o what_o say_v the_o king_n to_o she_o verse_n 27._o and_o he_o say_v if_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o help_v thou_o whence_o shall_v i_o help_v thou_o alas_o my_o bowel_n be_v towards_o thou_o but_o if_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o help_v thou_o in_o vain_a be_v the_o help_n of_o man_n four_o when_o you_o make_v your_o complaint_n to_o man_n sometime_o it_o fall_v out_o so_o that_o instead_o of_o ease_n from_o under_o your_o burden_n your_o burden_n be_v increase_v sometime_o man_n may_v add_v to_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o afflict_a through_o unskilfulness_n not_o know_v how_o to_o speak_v to_o they_o and_o how_o to_o carry_v it_o towards_o they_o yea_o sometime_o man_n may_v aggravate_v the_o burden_n of_o the_o afflict_a when_o they_o make_v their_o complaint_n wilful_o through_o pride_n and_o disdain_n and_o covetousness_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v when_o david_n send_v to_o nabal_n he_o be_v in_o a_o great_a strait_n for_o provision_n and_o he_o send_v to_o nabal_n in_o his_o strait_n for_o relief_n and_o he_o send_v he_o a_o churlish_a answer_n who_o be_v david_n and_o the_o son_n of_o jesse_n i_o know_v he_o not_o shall_v i_o send_v my_o corn_n and_o my_o ox_n that_o i_o have_v kill_v for_o my_o shearer_n and_o give_v it_o to_o he_o i_o know_v he_o not_o and_o you_o know_v they_o speak_v that_o which_o aggravate_v his_o sorrow_n and_o he_o go_v and_o make_v away_o himself_o so_o that_o i_o say_v in_o time_n of_o affliction_n faith_n cause_v a_o soul_n to_o go_v to_o christ_n for_o it_o do_v discover_v what_o man_n be_v four_o there_o be_v this_o ground_n of_o the_o point_n faith_n will_v make_v a_o soul_n go_v to_o christ_n alone_o for_o it_o discover_v to_o the_o soul_n that_o in_o christ_n there_o be_v all_o sufficiency_n to_o help_v it_o there_o be_v all_o in_o christ_n that_o may_v pity_v he_o and_o for_o the_o help_a of_o he_o it_o be_v not_o in_o the_o creature_n but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o christ_n for_o christ_n be_v furnish_v with_o compassion_n there_o be_v bowel_n of_o compassion_n towards_o his_o poor_a creature_n in_o distress_n it_o be_v a_o impossible_a thing_n that_o christ_n shall_v be_v insensible_a as_o man_n be_v you_o may_v spread_v your_o complaint_n before_o some_o man_n and_o they_o never_o be_v move_v no_o more_o than_o the_o stone_n in_o the_o street_n but_o the_o lord_n jesus_n he_o be_v not_o without_o compassion_n great_a bowel_n of_o compassion_n towards_o his_o people_n he_o can_v be_v insensible_a of_o any_o burden_n that_o lie_v upon_o a_o poor_a creature_n that_o come_v to_o he_o in_o all_o their_o affliction_n he_o be_v afflict_v he_o bear_v our_o sickness_n he_o carry_v our_o sorrow_n christ_n he_o feel_v the_o weight_n of_o all_o affliction_n and_o sorrow_n and_o burden_n that_o do_v at_o any_o time_n lie_v upon_o his_o people_n second_o as_o christ_n have_v compassion_n so_o he_o have_v a_o will_n he_o be_v always_o willing_a to_o do_v good_a to_o poor_a creature_n that_o come_v to_o he_o man_n as_o you_o have_v hear_v they_o be_v not_o always_o willing_a they_o may_v give_v you_o a_o parcel_n of_o good_a word_n but_o give_v you_o not_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v needful_a now_o christ_n he_o never_o put_v off_o his_o people_n with_o good_a word_n though_o one_o good_a word_n from_o christ_n be_v more_o worth_n than_o all_o that_o man_n can_v do_v for_o you_o but_o christ_n he_o will_v not_o give_v you_o good_a word_n alone_o but_o as_o he_o open_v his_o mouth_n in_o grace_n so_o he_o open_v his_o hand_n in_o mercy_n he_o open_v his_o mouth_n and_o his_o hand_n at_o the_o same_o time_n and_o he_o be_v very_o willing_a to_o relieve_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o he_o call_v poor_a creature_n to_o he_o you_o may_v see_v his_o willingness_n by_o the_o invitation_n that_o he_o give_v to_o all_o poor_a creature_n that_o be_v under_o any_o distress_n come_v to_o i_o all_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a and_o heavy_a lade_v and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n whatever_o the_o burden_n be_v whether_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n or_o sorrow_n christ_n make_v proclamation_n you_o have_v his_o invitation_n come_v to_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n and_o call_v upon_o i_o in_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n and_o i_o will_v deliver_v how_o do_v this_o testify_v the_o willingness_n of_o christ_n to_o relieve_v his_o poor_a creature_n three_o he_o have_v not_o only_a compassion_n but_o he_o also_o have_v power_n in_o his_o hand_n christ_n can_v do_v it_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v what_o he_o please_v thou_o have_v do_v whatsoever_o thou_o please_v in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n and_o in_o all_o deep_a place_n the_o deep_a affliction_n and_o sorrow_n that_o any_o of_o his_o people_n may_v sink_v into_o the_o lord_n jesus_n be_v able_a to_o stretch_v forth_o his_o hand_n and_o help_v they_o he_o have_v all_o store_n of_o provision_n in_o his_o house_n there_o be_v a_o infinite_a treasure_n of_o mercy_n all_o mercy_n be_v lay_v up_o in_o christ_n it_o shall_v not_o break_v his_o estate_n to_o uphold_v your_o estate_n for_o all_o the_o creature_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n be_v the_o lord_n the_o heaven_n and_o the_o earth_n be_v the_o lord_n and_o the_o fullness_n that_o be_v in_o they_o therefore_o there_o be_v power_n in_o christ_n hand_n to_o relieve_v his_o people_n four_o christ_n can_v aggravate_v sorrow_n and_o affliction_n he_o will_v not_o aggravate_v the_o sorrow_n and_o affliction_n of_o any_o of_o his_o people_n that_o come_v to_o he_o christ_n will_v never_o say_v to_o a_o poor_a soul_n as_o the_o pharisee_n to_o judas_n see_v thou_o to_o that_o when_o a_o soul_n come_v and_o say_v lord_n i_o have_v sin_v christ_n never_o give_v such_o a_o answer_n see_v thou_o to_o that_o he_o never_o do_v neither_o can_v he_o aggravate_v the_o sorrow_n and_o burden_n of_o poor_a creature_n that_o come_v to_o he_o now_o when_o faith_n discover_v this_o to_o the_o soul_n and_o
meet_v withal_o concern_v their_o own_o election_n first_o election_n a_o poor_a soul_n may_v be_v thus_o tempt_v that_o it_o be_v a_o impossible_a thing_n for_o it_o to_o attain_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n love_n this_o be_v a_o secret_a this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v transact_v in_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o sure_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a for_o i_o to_o attain_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o that_o the_o lord_n have_v love_v i_o and_o have_v write_v my_o name_n in_o the_o book_n of_o life_n man_n may_v have_v some_o good_a hope_n of_o it_o but_o sure_o say_v the_o temptation_n it_o be_v presumption_n for_o any_o man_n to_o think_v or_o say_v he_o may_v come_v to_o assurance_n that_o the_o lord_n have_v write_v his_o name_n in_o the_o book_n of_o life_n for_o there_o be_v these_o two_o thing_n against_o it_o first_o secret_a thing_n belong_v to_o god_n second_o no_o eye_n have_v see_v what_o be_v do_v in_o heaven_n and_o if_o eye_n have_v not_o see_v it_o how_o shall_v i_o attain_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o it_o in_o answer_n to_o this_o temptation_n know_v and_o consider_v that_o many_o of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n have_v attain_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n eternal_a love_n and_o have_v rise_v to_o this_o assurance_n that_o the_o lord_n have_v love_v and_o will_v love_v with_o a_o everlasting_a love_n the_o apostle_n paul_n do_v attain_v to_o it_o and_o he_o glory_n in_o it_o yea_o then_o when_o he_o speak_v in_o the_o person_n of_o all_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n rom._n 8._o 33._o who_o shall_v lay_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o charge_n of_o god_n elect_v it_o be_v god_n that_o justify_v verse_n 34._o who_o be_v he_o that_o condemn_v it_o be_v christ_n that_o die_v yea_o rather_o that_o be_v rise_v again_o who_o be_v even_o at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n who_o also_o make_v intercession_n for_o we_o verse_n 35._o who_o shall_v separate_v we_o from_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n he_o stand_v up_o to_o challenge_v all_o the_o world_n and_o the_o power_n of_o darkness_n who_o dare_v lay_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o charge_n of_o god_n elect_n and_o in_o the_o 38._o verse_n see_v what_o he_o further_o say_v for_o i_o be_o persuade_v that_o neither_o death_n nor_o life_n nor_o angel_n nor_o principality_n nor_o power_n nor_o thing_n present_a nor_o thing_n to_o come_v verse_n 39_o nor_o height_n nor_o depth_n nor_o any_o other_o creature_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o separate_v we_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n our_o lord_n so_o then_o you_o see_v it_o be_v a_o thing_n not_o impossible_a to_o attain_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n eternal_a elect_a love_n nay_o it_o be_v lay_v upon_o all_o the_o saint_n as_o a_o duty_n to_o seek_v after_o the_o knowledge_n of_o be_v put_v upon_o then_o certain_o this_o be_v a_o temptation_n and_o know_v it_o be_v a_o temptation_n that_o it_o be_v a_o impossible_a thing_n for_o any_o to_o attain_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n elect_v love_n but_o second_o temptation_n the_o second_o temptation_n concern_v our_o election_n may_v be_v this_o a_o poor_a soul_n may_v be_v thus_o tempt_v it_o be_v true_a there_o may_v be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n love_n and_o many_o of_o the_o saint_n have_v attain_v to_o this_o knowledge_n but_o as_o for_o i_o i_o have_v no_o certainty_n i_o have_v strive_v and_o i_o have_v wait_v upon_o god_n and_o seek_v for_o assurance_n but_o i_o have_v not_o attain_v it_o and_o therefore_o i_o be_o ready_a to_o conclude_v sure_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o love_v i_o other_o seek_v and_o they_o have_v attain_v and_o have_v assurance_n i_o have_v seek_v and_o i_o can_v meet_v with_o assurance_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o certain_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o love_v i_o i_o answer_v to_o this_o temptation_n know_v that_o thou_o can_v not_o conclude_v that_o god_n have_v not_o call_v thou_o effectual_o because_o thou_o have_v not_o assurance_n and_o if_o thou_o can_v not_o conclude_v that_o god_n have_v not_o call_v thou_o effectual_o because_o thou_o have_v not_o assurance_n much_o less_o can_v thou_o conclude_v that_o god_n have_v not_o choose_v thou_o from_o eternity_n because_o thou_o have_v not_o assurance_n but_o second_o in_o answer_n to_o this_o temptation_n have_v not_o the_o lord_n give_v thou_o a_o heart_n to_o close_v with_o christ_n as_o hold_v forth_o in_o the_o gospel_n to_o poor_a lose_a sinner_n have_v not_o god_n make_v thou_o willing_a to_o accept_v of_o christ_n have_v not_o the_o lord_n in_o some_o measure_n enable_v thou_o to_o cleave_v to_o christ_n and_o do_v now_o resolve_v to_o cast_v thyself_o upon_o christ_n to_o venture_v all_o upon_o christ_n even_o thy_o eternity_n why_o then_o know_v here_o be_v that_o which_o give_v the_o essence_n the_o be_v of_o faith_n this_o accept_n of_o christ_n hold_v forth_o in_o the_o gospel_n with_o thy_o rest_n upon_o he_o it_o be_v the_o be_v of_o faith_n and_o this_o faith_n be_v no_o other_o but_o the_o faith_n of_o god_n elect_v the_o fruit_n of_o god_n elect_v love_n it_o spring_v from_o that_o eternal_a love_n which_o choose_v his_o people_n unto_o salvation_n through_o faith_n and_o therefore_o though_o there_o be_v not_o the_o comfort_n of_o faith_n assurance_n be_v the_o comfort_n of_o faith_n the_o flower_n that_o grow_v upon_o the_o fruit_n of_o faith_n yet_o if_o there_o be_v that_o which_o give_v the_o be_v of_o faith_n thou_o may_v not_o conclude_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o love_v thou_o because_o thou_o have_v not_o assurance_n three_o in_o answer_n to_o this_o temptation_n thou_o say_v thou_o have_v no_o assurance_n of_o god_n elect_v love_n and_o therefore_o thou_o conclude_v that_o god_n do_v not_o love_v thou_o as_o thou_o have_v no_o assurance_n that_o god_n have_v choose_v thou_o so_o thou_o have_v no_o knowledge_n of_o the_o contrary_a and_o may_v not_o conclude_v the_o contrary_a that_o god_n into_o a_o thankful_a frame_n the_o temptation_n will_v soon_o vanish_v endeavour_v it_o all_o thou_o can_v wait_v upon_o god_n and_o look_v upon_o that_o which_o be_v matter_n of_o thankfulness_n if_o he_o do_v he_o be_v a_o close_a hypocrite_n not_o know_v to_o the_o church_n hypocrite_n there_o may_v be_v but_o that_o be_v no_o plea_n for_o the_o admit_v of_o those_o that_o be_v open_o scandalous_a as_o for_o those_o wicked_a person_n in_o the_o church_n of_o corinth_n it_o be_v defective_a but_o of_o right_n it_o shall_v not_o have_v be_v so_o possible_o the_o best_a church_n may_v be_v corrupt_a and_o may_v tolerate_v wicked_a person_n but_o by_o rule_v it_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v so_o when_o you_o be_v meet_v together_o and_o there_o be_v a_o wicked_a person_n among_o you_o deliver_v such_o a_o one_o unto_o satan_n for_o the_o destruction_n of_o the_o flesh_n that_o the_o spirit_n may_v be_v save_v in_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n know_v you_o not_o that_o a_o child_n o_o this_o be_v child_n bread_n and_o i_o must_v not_o give_v the_o child_n bread_n unto_o dog_n o_o that_o this_o may_v refresh_v your_o soul_n that_o christ_n look_v upon_o you_o as_o child_n and_o that_o he_o take_v care_n to_o provide_v bread_n for_o you_o he_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o soul_n of_o the_o righteous_a to_o famish_v prov._n 10._o 3._o child_n you_o shall_v have_v bread_n you_o shall_v have_v ordinance_n promise_n they_o belong_v to_o you_o they_o be_v your_o bread_n the_o lord_n will_v in_o due_a time_n give_v out_o that_o which_o your_o soul_n wait_v for_o child_n look_v for_o their_o bread_n wait_v for_o bread_n from_o heaven_n to_o be_v give_v out_o there_o be_v never_o a_o hire_a servant_n in_o christ_n house_n but_o shall_v have_v bread_n enough_o that_o which_o stay_v the_o soul_n upon_o god_n and_o keep_v up_o the_o soul_n that_o it_o faint_v not_o and_o sink_v not_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v if_o our_o hope_n be_v only_o in_o this_o life_n we_o be_v of_o all_o man_n most_o miserable_a if_o we_o have_v not_o a_o better_a hope_n and_o anchor_n then_o the_o man_n of_o this_o world_n have_v that_o have_v only_o hope_v for_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n but_o this_o save_a hope_n which_o be_v the_o sister_n of_o faith_n that_o look_v to_o the_o good_a thing_n lay_v up_o in_o the_o promise_n it_o be_v that_o which_o stay_v the_o soul_n and_o keep_v it_o safe_a and_o steadfast_a in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o storm_n whatsoever_o if_o a_o ship_n lie_v at_o anchor_n it_o may_v ride_v safe_a at_o midnight_n though_o never_o so_o dark_a and_o true_o that_o soul_n that_o have_v cast_v anchor_n upon_o christ_n it_o may_v ride_v safe_a in_o the_o dark_a time_n in_o the_o sad_a condition_n that_o can_v befall_v it_o while_o upon_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n this_o great_a sea_n if_o a_o ship_n have_v a_o good_a anchor_n she_o ride_v safe_a in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o great_a rage_a sea_n though_o the_o wind_n rise_v though_o the_o wave_n be_v never_o so_o high_a this_o anchor_n of_o hope_v it_o cause_v a_o soul_n to_o ride_v safe_a in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o temptation_n hope_n keep_v the_o heart_n up_o rom._n 5._o 2._o by_o who_o also_o we_o have_v access_n by_o faith_n into_o this_o grace_n wherein_o we_o stand_v and_o rejoice_v in_o the_o hope_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n verse_n 3._o and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o we_o glory_n in_o tribulation_n also_o know_v that_o tribulation_n work_v patience_n verse_n 4._o and_o patience_n experience_n and_o experience_n hope_v because_o we_o have_v this_o hope_n therefore_o we_o rejoice_v in_o tribulation_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o storm_n we_o rejoice_v we_o can_v sing_v for_o joy_n as_o paul_n and_o silas_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n arise_v against_o you_o how_o sad_a will_v your_o condition_n be_v and_o true_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n their_o condition_n be_v sad_a though_o they_o do_v not_o lay_v it_o to_o heart_n their_o ship_n be_v at_o sea_n toss_v up_o and_o down_o and_o have_v no_o anchor_n every_o man_n out_o of_o christ_n either_o he_o have_v no_o hope_n no_o anchor_n or_o second_o if_o he_o have_v hope_n his_o hope_n be_v not_o sure_a and_o steadfast_a it_o be_v no_o firm_a hope_n or_o three_o his_o hope_n be_v not_o cast_v upon_o a_o good_a ground_n and_o if_o so_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o the_o ship_n shall_v be_v safe_a when_o the_o storm_n arise_v for_o it_o be_v a_o very_a rot_a place_n that_o most_o man_n out_o of_o christ_n do_v cast_v the_o anchor_n of_o their_o hope_n upon_o most_o man_n cast_v their_o anchor_n downward_o but_o this_o anchor_n of_o hope_n must_v be_v cast_v upward_o it_o never_o take_v place_n when_o it_o be_v cast_v downward_o it_o have_v no_o ground_n to_o fasten_v upon_o but_o when_o it_o be_v cast_v within_o the_o veil_n it_o take_v hold_v upon_o the_o rock_n upon_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o the_o promise_n that_o be_v more_o sure_a than_o heaven_n and_o earth_n but_o most_o man_n cast_v their_o anchor_n downward_o their_o hope_n be_v for_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n and_o that_o hope_n will_v not_o hold_v and_o some_o cast_v the_o anchor_n of_o their_o hope_n upon_o themselves_o and_o that_o be_v a_o poor_a ground_n to_o cast_v this_o anchor_n upon_o the_o anchor_n of_o most_o man_n that_o live_v under_o the_o gospel_n that_o be_v not_o bring_v home_o to_o christ_n their_o anchor_n be_v cast_v upon_o themselves_o upon_o some_o work_n some_o duty_n some_o performance_n upon_o something_o that_o they_o have_v do_v true_o this_o be_v a_o rot_a ground_n and_o this_o hope_n will_v not_o stand_v you_o in_o stead_n there_o be_v no_o anchor_n will_v hold_v but_o that_o which_o be_v cast_v upward_o within_o the_o veil_n therefore_o dear_a friend_n i_o beseech_v you_o examine_v whether_o you_o have_v that_o anchor_n that_o will_v hold_v have_v you_o this_o hope_n that_o be_v cast_v within_o the_o veil_n o_o that_o god_n will_v cause_v you_o to_o look_v after_o this_o hope_n you_o will_v not_o trust_v your_o body_n at_o sea_n in_o a_o ship_n that_o have_v no_o anchor_n you_o will_v say_v it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o your_o life_n be_v worth_a if_o a_o storm_n shall_v arise_v will_v you_o not_o trust_v your_o body_n where_o there_o be_v no_o anchor_n and_o will_v you_o trust_v your_o soul_n where_o there_o be_v no_o anchor_n yet_o this_o be_v the_o folly_n of_o thousand_o those_o that_o be_v call_v professor_n they_o will_v trust_v their_o soul_n at_o sea_n without_o a_o anchor_n alas_o what_o will_v they_o do_v when_o the_o storm_n shall_v arise_v when_o when_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n shall_v arise_v what_o will_v you_o do_v o_o that_o god_n will_v cause_v you_o to_o come_v to_o christ_n that_o you_o may_v have_v this_o anchor_n that_o be_v sure_a and_o steadfast_a that_o be_v the_o first_o second_o 2._o let_v not_o god_n people_n wonder_n that_o they_o meet_v with_o storm_n temptation_n trial_n and_o affliction_n and_o at_o the_o rage_n of_o man_n against_o you_o why_o you_o be_v like_o a_o ship_n at_o sea_n and_o a_o ship_n at_o sea_n have_v prepare_v for_o a_o storm_n if_o the_o wave_n do_v beat_v upon_o they_o they_o be_v prepare_v for_o it_o they_o be_v toss_v up_o and_o down_o the_o sea_n and_o yet_o they_o hope_v they_o shall_v come_v to_o land_n and_o therefore_o you_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n do_v not_o wonder_v at_o your_o temptation_n and_o trial_n and_o that_o the_o wrath_n of_o man_n be_v against_o you_o this_o be_v the_o place_n for_o storm_n heaven_n be_v the_o place_n of_o rest_n the_o lord_n by_o this_o will_v embitter_v the_o world_n to_o you_o he_o will_v make_v you_o know_v that_o the_o world_n be_v bitter_a and_o that_o heaven_n be_v sweet_a o_o how_o sweet_a will_v heaven_n be_v when_o the_o soul_n shall_v come_v out_o of_o the_o midst_n of_o great_a storm_n and_o dark_a night_n and_o many_o perplexity_n of_o spirit_n many_o toss_n in_o their_o condition_n both_o outward_a and_o inward_a the_o lord_n by_o these_o storm_n will_v make_v heaven_n very_o sweet_a unto_o you_o heaven_n be_v the_o place_n of_o rest_n though_o this_o be_v the_o place_n of_o trouble_n and_o therefore_o do_v not_o wonder_v at_o it_o that_o be_v the_o second_o three_o 3_o what_o a_o mercy_n be_v it_o that_o god_n people_n be_v keep_v and_o preserve_v any_o moment_n it_o be_v a_o mercy_n to_o be_v keep_v at_o sea_n every_o man_n will_v say_v so_o but_o especial_o to_o be_v keep_v and_o preserve_v when_o the_o sea_n rage_v there_o be_v no_o heart_n almost_o so_o hard_o but_o will_v be_v affect_v with_o such_o a_o mercy_n to_o be_v keep_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o storm_n when_o they_o expect_v to_o make_v their_o grave_n in_o the_o deep_n this_o be_v a_o wonder_n and_o o_o what_o a_o mercy_n be_v it_o that_o god_n people_n be_v keep_v in_o this_o tempestuous_a world_n it_o be_v a_o wonder_n that_o your_o body_n be_v not_o break_v and_o that_o your_o spirit_n be_v not_o break_v and_o that_o your_o comfort_n be_v not_o break_v when_o so_o many_o wind_n strive_v upon_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n this_o sea_n it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n
to_o be_v keep_v and_o therefore_o acknowledge_v it_o to_o the_o praise_n of_o god_n it_o do_v appear_v and_o the_o lord_n do_v make_v it_o evident_a that_o the_o sea_n be_v before_o the_o throne_n if_o the_o sea_n be_v not_o before_o the_o throne_n of_o god_n god_n people_n shall_v be_v swallow_v up_o every_o moment_n the_o rage_n of_o man_n and_o of_o devil_n will_v swallow_v they_o up_o but_o the_o sea_n be_v before_o the_o throne_n before_o the_o eye_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o wonder_v that_o you_o be_v safe_a in_o this_o rage_a sea_n four_o 4._o it_o call_v upon_o you_o that_o be_v the_o lord_n people_n to_o watch_v and_o pray_v for_o you_o be_v at_o sea_n he_o that_o will_v not_o pray_v in_o a_o storm_n he_o will_v never_o pray_v the_o worst_a of_o man_n will_v pray_v hard_a in_o a_o storm_n the_o heathen_a mariner_n jonah_n 1._o 5._o then_o the_o mariner_n be_v afraid_a and_o cry_v every_o man_n unto_o his_o god_n therefore_o there_o be_v a_o proverb_n that_o man_n go_v to_o sea_n to_o learn_v to_o pray_v true_o the_o lord_n send_v his_o people_n to_o sea_n for_o this_o end_n that_o he_o may_v learn_v you_o to_o pray_v and_o cry_v mighty_o to_o he_o the_o saint_n shall_v not_o need_v to_o pray_v when_o they_o come_v in_o heaven_n there_o all_o their_o desire_n shall_v be_v satisfy_v and_o they_o shall_v want_v nothing_o and_o therefore_o no_o need_n to_o pray_v but_o the_o lord_n he_o send_v you_o into_o the_o sea_n of_o this_o world_n that_o he_o may_v learn_v you_o to_o pray_v and_o he_o raise_v many_o storm_n for_o this_o end_n that_o so_o you_o may_v cry_v mighty_o to_o the_o lord_n the_o disciple_n when_o in_o a_o storm_n they_o cry_v lord_n save_v we_o we_o perish_v brethren_n you_o be_v at_o sea_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o storm_n and_o therefore_o you_o have_v need_v watch_n and_o pray_v and_o cry_v mighty_o that_o you_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o temptation_n and_o save_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o your_o fear_n and_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o rock_n and_o the_o sand_n and_o from_o pirate_n &_o enemy_n many_o danger_n you_o be_v in_o &_o therefore_o remember_v what_o christ_n say_v unto_o his_o disciple_n watch_n and_o pray_v that_o you_o enter_v not_o into_o temptation_n five_o 5._o engage_v the_o presence_n of_o christ_n with_o you_o if_o christ_n be_v in_o the_o ship_n all_o be_v safe_a you_o have_v need_n engage_v the_o presence_n of_o christ_n with_o you_o every_o moment_n for_o it_o be_v a_o dangerous_a sea_n you_o be_v in_o and_o if_o christ_n be_v not_o with_o you_o you_o will_v be_v split_v upon_o some_o sand_n or_o other_o and_o therefore_o o_o beg_v the_o presence_n of_o christ_n do_v not_o set_v forward_o in_o any_o duty_n without_o the_o presence_n of_o christ_n do_v not_o sail_v one_o league_n without_o the_o presence_n of_o christ_n but_o urge_v it_o before_o the_o lord_n that_o you_o be_v upon_o a_o troublesome_a sea_n where_o there_o be_v so_o many_o danger_n and_o desire_v of_o god_n that_o the_o presence_n of_o christ_n may_v be_v with_o you_o for_o if_o christ_n be_v with_o you_o all_o will_v be_v safe_a six_o 6._o you_o that_o be_v the_o lord_n people_n do_v you_o open_v the_o sail_n of_o your_o soul_n to_o the_o breathe_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n if_o you_o will_v make_v a_o voyage_n to_o heaven_n know_v that_o you_o can_v do_v nothing_o till_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n breathe_v in_o you_o indeed_o you_o may_v turn_v the_o sail_n of_o your_o soul_n that_o way_n and_o be_v wait_v for_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n but_o till_o the_o spirit_n breathe_v in_o you_o you_o can_v sail_v one_o league_n but_o o_o what_o a_o comfortable_a voyage_n shall_v you_o make_v when_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n shall_v fill_v your_o heart_n with_o holy_a motion_n and_o carry_v you_o god-ward_o and_o heaven-ward_n therefore_o wait_v for_o those_o breathe_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o the_o spouse_n in_o cant._n 4._o 16._o awake_v o_o north_n wind_n and_o come_v thou_o south_n blow_v upon_o my_o garden_n that_o the_o spice_n thereof_o may_v flow_v out_o and_o so_o do_v you_o beg_v of_o god_n that_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n may_v breathe_v upon_o you_o and_o fill_v the_o sail_n of_o your_o soul_n that_o you_o may_v be_v carry_v heaven-ward_n open_v your_o soul_n to_o the_o breathe_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n and_o that_o be_v the_o way_n to_o make_v a_o comfortable_a voyage_n seven_o 7._o you_o that_o be_v the_o lord_n people_n if_o you_o be_v christ_n ship_n at_o sea_n look_v for_o good_a load_n be_v not_o content_a to_o go_v home_o empty_a christian_n shall_v labour_v to_o be_v fill_v with_o the_o spirit_n to_o be_v load_v with_o the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n this_o the_o lord_n call_v for_o true_o it_o be_v a_o dangerous_a voyage_n that_o you_o make_v and_o therefore_o you_o have_v need_n be_v load_v with_o rich_a commodity_n you_o have_v need_n seek_v after_o much_o of_o that_o durable_a riches_n that_o abide_v for_o ever_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o love_n that_o the_o ship_n shall_v come_v home_o empty_a o_o that_o you_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n will_v remember_v that_o you_o have_v but_o once_o to_o pass_v over_o the_o sea_n of_o this_o world_n and_o then_o there_o be_v a_o end_n for_o ever_o and_o therefore_o do_v not_o return_v empty_a but_o o_o go_v and_o beg_v of_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o will_v fill_v you_o with_o the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n that_o you_o may_v go_v home_o load_v with_o faith_n and_o righteousness_n so_o shall_v you_o be_v a_o honour_n to_o god_n and_o there_o will_v be_v much_o joy_n in_o heaven_n when_o you_o come_v home_o eight_o 8._o it_o be_v a_o word_n of_o much_o comfort_n to_o those_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n and_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o christ_n know_v though_o you_o be_v at_o sea_n and_o meet_v with_o many_o storm_n yet_o you_o need_v not_o fear_n you_o have_v a_o anchor_n that_o will_v hold_v it_o be_v cast_v upon_o a_o sure_a ground_n your_o anchor_n it_o be_v enter_v it_o be_v fasten_v upon_o the_o father_n free_a grace_n and_o the_o son_n be_v everlasting_a righteousness_n which_o be_v sure_a and_o steadfast_a and_o if_o so_o do_v not_o fear_v though_o storm_n arise_v it_o shall_v go_v well_o with_o you_o for_o christ_n be_v the_o owner_n of_o the_o ship_n and_o he_o will_v go_v master_n in_o the_o ship_n and_o so_o long_o as_o the_o presence_n of_o christ_n be_v with_o you_o you_o may_v be_v comfort_v whatever_o you_o meet_v with_o if_o christ_n be_v in_o the_o ship_n he_o will_v rebuke_v the_o wind_n and_o the_o wave_n yea_o he_o will_v tread_v upon_o the_o proud_a boisterous_a wave_n that_o his_o people_n meet_v with_o yea_o and_o he_o will_v make_v his_o people_n also_o to_o tread_v upon_o they_o too_o and_o therefore_o fear_v not_o for_o christ_n be_v the_o master_n of_o the_o ship_n he_o be_v with_o you_o the_o load_v also_o be_v christ_n and_o as_o i_o say_v before_o you_o need_v not_o fear_v split_v and_o lose_v your_o load_n for_o then_o christ_n shall_v lose_v more_o than_o you_o if_o thy_o soul_n shall_v be_v lose_v at_o sea_n than_o christ_n shall_v lose_v his_o honour_n and_o his_o honour_n be_v more_o to_o he_o than_o thy_o soul_n to_o thou_o and_o therefore_o let_v all_o god_n people_n be_v comfort_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o storm_n and_o trial_n persecution_n affliction_n and_o suffering_n though_o this_o world_n be_v a_o sea_n and_o a_o evil_a sea_n a_o troublesome_a sea_n yet_o be_v comfort_v for_o though_o the_o ship_n of_o the_o body_n may_v be_v split_v and_o all_o your_o outward_a load_n may_v be_v lose_v yet_o so_o long_o as_o christ_n be_v the_o owner_n of_o the_o ship_n so_o long_o as_o christ_n be_v in_o the_o ship_n so_o long_o as_o the_o anchor_n of_o the_o ship_n be_v cast_v in_o heaven_n there_o be_v not_o one_o passenger_n shall_v be_v lose_v for_o though_o the_o outward_a man_n be_v lose_v yet_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v
