thus_o the_o gospel_n lead_v we_o beyond_o and_o above_o the_o light_n of_o the_o law_n and_o reason_n into_o the_o inward_a and_o deep_a secret_n of_o faith_n where_o the_o law_n and_o reason_n have_v nothing_o to_o do_v notwithstanding_o we_o must_v hearken_v also_o unto_o the_o law_n but_o in_o place_n and_o time_n moses_n while_o he_o be_v in_o the_o mountain_n la_o where_o he_o talk_v with_o god_n face_n to_o face_n have_v no_o law_n make_v no_o law_n minister_v no_o law_n but_o when_o he_o be_v come_v down_o from_o the_o mountain_n he_o be_v a_o lawgiver_n and_o govern_v the_o people_n by_o the_o law_n so_o the_o conscience_n must_v be_v free_a from_o the_o law_n but_o the_o body_n must_v be_v obedient_a unto_o the_o law_n hereby_o it_o appear_v that_o paul_n reprove_v peter_n for_o no_o light_a matter_n but_o for_o the_o chief_a article_n of_o all_o christian_a doctrine_n which_o by_o peter_n dissimulation_n be_v in_o great_a danger_n for_o barnabas_n and_o the_o other_o jew_n dissemble_v together_o with_o he_o which_o do_v all_o offend_v not_o through_o ignorance_n or_o malice_n but_o for_o fear_n of_o the_o jew_n whereby_o their_o heart_n be_v so_o blind_v fall_v from_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n he_o can_v not_o be_v more_o grievous_o reprehend_v yet_o he_o suffer_v it_o patient_o and_o no_o doubt_n but_o he_o glad_o acknowledge_v his_o offence_n i_o say_v before_o that_o many_o have_v the_o gospel_n but_o not_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n so_o paul_n say_v here_o that_o peter_n barnabas_n and_o other_o of_o the_o jew_n go_v not_o the_o right_a way_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o be_v to_o say_v they_o have_v the_o gospel_n but_o they_o walk_v not_o upright_o according_a to_o the_o gospel_n for_o albeit_o they_o preach_v the_o gospel_n yet_o through_o their_o dissimulation_n which_o can_v not_o stand_v with_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o establish_v the_o law_n but_o the_o establish_n of_o the_o law_n be_v the_o abolish_n of_o the_o gospel_n who_o so_o then_o can_v right_o judge_v between_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n let_v he_o thank_v god_n and_o know_v that_o he_o be_v a_o right_n divine_a in_o the_o time_n of_o tentation_n learn_v i_o confess_v that_o i_o myself_o do_v not_o know_v how_o to_o do_v it_o as_o i_o ought_v now_o the_o way_n to_o discern_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o be_v to_o place_v the_o gospel_n in_o heaven_n and_o the_o law_n on_o the_o earth_n to_o call_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o gospel_n heavenly_a and_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n earthly_a and_o to_o put_v as_o great_a difference_n between_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o of_o the_o law_n as_o god_n have_v make_v between_o heaven_n and_o earth_n between_o light_n and_o darkness_n gospel_n between_o day_n and_o night_n let_v the_o one_o be_v as_o the_o light_n and_o the_o day_n and_o the_o other_o as_o the_o darkness_n and_o the_o night_n and_o will_v to_o god_n we_o can_v yet_o further_o separate_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o wherefore_o if_o the_o question_n be_v concern_v the_o matter_n of_o faith_n or_o conscience_n let_v we_o utter_o exclude_v the_o law_n and_o leave_v it_o on_o the_o earth_n but_o if_o we_o have_v to_o do_v with_o work_n then_o let_v we_o lighten_v the_o lantern_n of_o work_n and_o of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n so_o let_v the_o sun_n &_o the_o inestimable_a light_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o grace_n shine_v in_o the_o day_n and_o the_o lantern_n of_o the_o law_n in_o the_o night_n wherefore_o if_o thy_o conscience_n be_v terrify_v with_o the_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o sin_n think_v thus_o with_o thyself_o thou_o be_v now_o remain_v upon_o earth_n there_o let_v the_o contrariwise_o in_o civil_a policy_n obedience_n to_o the_o law_n must_v be_v severe_o require_v there_o nothing_o must_v be_v know_v as_o concern_v the_o gospel_n conscience_n grace_n remission_n of_o sin_n heavenly_a righteousness_n or_o christ_n himself_o but_o moses_n only_o with_o the_o law_n and_o the_o work_v thereof_o if_o we_o mark_v well_o this_o distinction_n neither_o the_o one_o nor_o the_o other_o shall_v pass_v his_o bound_n but_o the_o law_n shall_v abide_v without_o heaven_n that_o be_v without_o the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n and_o contrariwise_o the_o liberty_n of_o but_o forasmuch_o as_o we_o take_v in_o hand_n to_o expound_v this_o epistle_n which_o we_o do_v not_o because_o it_o be_v needful_a or_o for_o any_o hardness_n that_o be_v in_o it_o but_o that_o his_o whole_a heart_n so_o frail_a a_o thing_n be_v our_o flesh_n and_o disobedient_a to_o the_o spirit_n this_o greeting_n of_o the_o apostle_n be_v strange_a unto_o the_o world_n world_n and_o be_v never_o hear_v of_o before_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o these_o two_o word_n grace_n and_o peace_n comprehend_v in_o they_o whatsoever_o belong_v to_o christianity_n grace_n release_v sin_n and_o peace_n make_v the_o conscience_n quiet_a the_o two_o fiend_n that_o torment_v we_o be_v sin_n and_o conscience_n conscience_n but_o christ_n have_v vanquish_v these_o two_o monster_n and_o tread_v they_o under_o foot_n both_o in_o this_o world_n and_o in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v this_o the_o world_n do_v not_o know_v and_o therefore_o it_o can_v teach_v no_o certainty_n of_o the_o overcome_v of_o sin_n conscience_n and_o death_n christian_n only_a christian_n have_v this_o kind_n of_o doctrine_n and_o be_v exercise_v and_o arm_v with_o it_o to_o get_v victory_n against_o sin_n despair_n and_o everlasting_a death_n and_o it_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o doctrine_n neither_o proceed_n of_o free_a will_n nor_o invent_v by_o the_o reason_n or_o wisdom_n of_o of_o man_n peace_n but_o give_v from_o above_o moreover_o these_o two_o word_n grace_n and_o peace_n do_v contain_v in_o they_o the_o whole_a sum_n of_o christianity_n grace_n contain_v the_o remission_n of_o sin_n peace_n a_o quiet_a and_o joyful_a conscience_n but_o peace_n of_o conscience_n can_v never_o be_v have_v unless_o sin_n be_v first_o forgeven_n but_o it_o be_v not_o forgive_v for_o the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n for_o no_o man_n be_v able_a to_o satisfy_v the_o law_n but_o the_o law_n do_v rather_o show_v sin_n accuse_v and_o terrify_v the_o conscience_n declare_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o drive_v to_o desperation_n much_o less_o be_v sin_n take_v away_o by_o the_o work_n and_o invention_n of_o man_n as_o wicked_a worship_n strange_a religious_a vow_n and_o pilgrimage_n final_o there_o be_v no_o work_n that_o can_v take_v away_o sin_n but_o sin_n be_v rather_o increase_v by_o work_n for_o the_o justiciary_n &_o meritmonger_n the_o more_o they_o sweat_n and_o labour_n to_o bring_v themselves_o out_o of_o sin_n the_o deep_o they_o be_v plunge_v therein_o alone_o for_o there_o be_v no_o mean_n to_o take_v away_o sin_n but_o grace_n alone_o therefore_o paul_n in_o all_o the_o greeting_n of_o his_o epistle_n set_v grace_n and_o peace_n against_o sin_n and_o a_o evil_a conscience_n this_o thing_n must_v be_v diligent_o mark_v the_o word_n be_v easy_a but_o in_o tentation_n it_o be_v the_o hard_a thing_n that_o can_v be_v to_o be_v certain_o persuade_v in_o our_o heart_n that_o by_o grace_n alone_o without_o any_o other_o mean_v either_o in_o heaven_n or_o earth_n we_o have_v remission_n of_o sin_n and_o peace_n with_o god._n the_o world_n understand_v not_o this_o doctrine_n &_o therefore_o it_o neither_o will_n nor_o can_v abide_v it_o godliness_n but_o condemn_v it_o as_o heretical_a and_o wicked_a it_o brag_v of_o free_a will_n of_o the_o light_n of_o reason_n and_o the_o soundness_n of_o the_o power_n and_o quality_n of_o nature_n &_o of_o good_a work_n as_o mean_n whereby_o it_o can_v deserve_v and_o attain_v grace_n and_o peace_n that_o be_v to_o say_v forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o quiet_a conscience_n but_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o the_o conscience_n shall_v be_v quiet_a and_o joyful_a quiet_v unless_o it_o have_v peace_n through_o grace_n that_o be_v to_o say_v through_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n promise_v in_o christ_n many_o have_v careful_o labour_v by_o find_v out_o diverse_a and_o sundry_a religion_n order_n and_o exercise_n for_o this_o purpose_n to_o attain_v peace_n and_o quietness_n of_o conscience_n but_o by_o so_o do_v they_o have_v plunge_v themselves_o in_o more_o and_o great_a misery_n for_o all_o such_o device_n be_v but_o mean_n to_o increase_v doubtfulness_n and_o despair_n therefore_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o rest_n to_o my_o bone_n or_o thou_o unless_o we_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o grace_n and_o cleave_v unto_o it_o steadfast_o &_o faithful_o then_o shall_v our_o conscience_n undoubted_o find_v grace_n and_o peace_n christian_n the_o apostle_n do_v fit_o distinguish_v this_o grace_n and_o peace_n from_o all_o other_o kind_n of_o grace_n &_o peace_n whatsoever_o he_o wish_v to_o the_o galatian_n grace_n &_o peace_n not_o from_o the_o emperor_n or_o king_n and_o prince_n for_o these_o do_v common_o persecute_v the_o godly_a and_o rise_v up_o against_o the_o lord_n and_o christ_n his_o anoint_v 2.2_o psal._n 2._o nor_o from_o the_o world_n for_o in_o the_o world_n say_v christ_n you_o shall_v have_v trouble_n 10.23_o but_o from_o god_n our_o father_n etc_n etc_n which_o be_v as_o much_o to_o say_v as_o he_o wish_v unto_o they_o a_o heavenly_a peace_n so_o christ_n say_v my_o peace_n i_o leave_v unto_o you_o my_o peace_n i_o geve_v you_o 14.27_o not_o as_o the_o world_n give_v it_o do_v i_o geve_v it_o unto_o you_o the_o peace_n of_o the_o world_n grant_v nothing_o but_o the_o peace_n of_o our_o good_n and_o body_n world_n so_o the_o grace_n or_o favour_n of_o the_o world_n give_v we_o leave_v to_o enjoy_v our_o good_n &_o cast_v we_o not_o out_o of_o our_o possession_n but_o in_o affliction_n &_o in_o the_o hour_n of_o peace_n of_o god_n be_v in_o the_o heart_n then_o be_v man_n strong_a so_o that_o he_o can_v neither_o be_v cast_v down_o with_o adversity_n nor_o puff_v up_o with_o prosperity_n but_o walk_v on_o plain_o and_o keep_v the_o high_a way_n for_o he_o take_v heart_n and_o courage_n in_o the_o victory_n of_o christ_n death_n &_o the_o confidence_n thereof_o begin_v to_o reign_v in_o his_o conscience_n over_o sin_n and_o death_n because_o through_o he_o he_o have_v assure_v forgiveness_n of_o his_o sin_n which_o after_o he_o have_v once_o obtain_v his_o conscience_n be_v at_o rest_n and_o by_o the_o word_n of_o grace_n be_v comfort_v so_o then_o a_o man_n be_v comfort_v &_o hearten_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o be_v by_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o by_o this_o peace_n rule_n to_o be_v observe_v that_o man_n ought_v to_o abstain_v from_o the_o curious_a search_n of_o god_n majesty_n but_o why_o do_v the_o apostle_n join_v in_o this_o salutation_n christ_n and_o from_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n be_v it_o not_o enough_o to_o say_v and_o from_o god_n our_o father_n why_o then_o do_v he_o couple_n jesus_n christ_n with_o the_o father_n you_o have_v often_o time_n hear_v of_o we_o how_o it_o be_v a_o rule_n and_o principle_n in_o the_o scripture_n diligent_o to_o be_v mark_v that_o we_o must_v abstain_v from_o the_o curious_a search_n of_o god_n absolve_v not_o such_o as_o believe_v but_o such_o as_o be_v contrite_a make_v confession_n to_o a_o priest_n and_o reach_v out_o their_o help_a hand_n to_o the_o maintenance_n of_o his_o pomp_n and_o his_o tradition_n yet_o notwithstanding_o in_o this_o great_a light_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o blind_a and_o obstinate_a papist_n do_v continue_v still_o in_o their_o damnable_a dote_a dream_n say_v that_o the_o quality_n of_o nature_n do_v remain_v sound_a and_o uncorrupt_a &_o that_o man_n be_v able_a to_o prepare_v themselves_o to_o grace_n or_o to_o deserve_v grace_n by_o their_o own_o work_n their_o own_o conscience_n but_o we_o do_v constant_o affirm_v with_o paul_n for_o we_o will_v not_o reject_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o either_o christ_n die_v in_o vain_a vain_a or_o else_o the_o law_n justify_v not_o but_o christ_n die_v not_o in_o vain_a therefore_o the_o law_n justify_v not_o christ_n the_o son_n of_o god_n of_o his_o own_o free_a grace_n and_o mercy_n have_v man_n by_o our_o doctrine_n 2.3_o for_o we_o teach_v that_o all_o man_n be_v wicked_a by_o nature_n and_o the_o child_n of_o wrath_n we_o condenme_v man_n freewill_n gospel_n his_o strength_n wisdom_n and_o righteousness_n and_o all_o religion_n of_o our_o devise_v and_o to_o be_v short_a we_o say_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o we_o that_o be_v able_a to_o deserve_v grace_n and_o the_o service_n of_o god_n there_o be_v none_o that_o will_v now_o take_v any_o care_n for_o the_o nourish_a of_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o church_n and_o erect_v of_o school_n but_o for_o the_o erect_n and_o stablish_v of_o false_a worship_n superstition_n and_o idolatry_n no_o cost_n be_v spare_v but_o every_o man_n be_v ready_a to_o geve_v large_o what_o so_o ever_o can_v be_v make_v and_o while_o the_o pope_n and_o all_o impiety_n reign_v be_v charge_v and_o burden_v with_o find_v so_o many_o monastery_n and_o infinite_a swarm_n of_o mass_a priest_n to_o be_v brief_a true_a religion_n be_v ever_o in_o need_n and_o christ_n complain_v that_o he_o be_v hungry_a thirsty_a harbourless_a naked_a and_o sick_a contrariwise_o 3â—_o false_a religion_n and_o impiety_n flourish_v &_o abound_v with_o all_o worldly_a wealth_n and_o prosperity_n wherefore_o a_o true_a and_o faithful_a pastor_n must_v have_v a_o care_n of_o the_o poor_a also_o and_o this_o care_n paul_n here_o confess_v that_o he_o have_v verse_n 11._o and_o when_o peter_n be_v come_v to_o antiochia_n i_o withstand_v he_o to_o his_o face_n for_o he_o be_v to_o be_v blame_v paul_n go_v on_o still_o in_o his_o confutation_n see_v that_o the_o devil_n be_v break_v lose_v and_o rage_v every_o where_o that_o all_o the_o world_n be_v on_o a_o uproar_n that_o tyrant_n exercise_n their_o cruelty_n and_o heresy_n spring_v up_o but_o let_v they_o assure_v themselves_o 5.12_o that_o these_o be_v sign_n not_o of_o terror_n but_o of_o joy_n as_o christ_n himself_o expound_v they_o say_v rejoice_v and_o be_v glad_a etc_n etc_n god_n forbid_v therefore_o that_o the_o offence_n of_o the_o cross_n shall_v be_v take_v away_o which_o thing_n shall_v come_v to_o pass_v if_o we_o shall_v preach_v that_o which_o the_o prince_n of_o troubler_n of_o to_o condemn_v they_o and_o to_o deliver_v they_o to_o satan_n but_o also_o to_o wish_v that_o they_o may_v be_v utter_o root_v out_o and_o pearish_v and_o what_o be_v this_o else_o but_o plain_o curse_v paul_n as_o i_o suppose_v allude_v here_o to_o circumcision_n as_o if_o he_o will_v say_v they_o compel_v you_o to_o cut_v of_o the_o foresakin_n of_o your_o flesh_n but_o i_o will_v that_o they_o themselves_o may_v be_v utter_o cut_v off_o by_o the_o root_n here_o rise_v a_o question_n whether_o it_o be_v lawful_a for_o christian_n to_o curse_v why_o not_o howbeit_o not_o always_o nor_o for_o every_o cause_n curse_v but_o when_o the_o matter_n be_v come_v to_o this_o point_n that_o god_n word_n must_v be_v evil_o speak_v of_o and_o his_o doctrine_n blaspheme_v and_o so_o consequent_o god_n himself_o then_o must_v we_o turn_v this_o sentence_n and_o say_v bless_a be_v god_n and_o his_o word_n and_o what_o so_o ever_o be_v without_o god_n and_o his_o word_n accurse_a be_v it_o yea_o though_o it_o be_v a_o apostle_n or_o a_o angel_n from_o heaven_n so_o he_o say_v before_o in_o the_o first_o chapter_n 1.3.4_o although_o we_o or_o a_o angel_n from_o heaven_n preach_v otherwise_o unto_o you_o then_o that_o which_o we_o have_v preach_v let_v he_o be_v accurse_v hereby_o it_o may_v appear_v how_o great_a a_o matter_n paul_n make_v of_o a_o little_a needs_o follow_v if_o the_o word_n be_v corrupt_v there_o remain_v no_o hope_n of_o salvation_n but_o for_o our_o part_n if_o we_o be_v curse_v rail_v upon_o and_o slay_v there_o be_v yet_o one_o that_o can_v raise_v we_o up_o again_o and_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o curse_n death_n and_o hell_n wherefore_o let_v we_o learn_v to_o advance_v and_o extol_v the_o majesty_n &_o authority_n of_o god_n word_n advance_v for_o it_o be_v no_o small_a trifle_n as_o brainsick_a head_n surmise_v at_o this_o day_n but_o every_o title_n thereof_o be_v great_a than_o heaven_n and_o earth_n wherefore_o in_o this_o respect_n we_o have_v no_o regard_n of_o christian_a charity_n or_o concord_n but_o we_o sit_v as_o it_o be_v on_o the_o judgement_n seat_n that_o be_v to_o say_v we_o curse_v and_o condemn_v all_o man_n which_o in_o the_o least_o point_n deface_v or_o corrupt_v the_o majesty_n of_o god_n word_n for_o a_o little_a leaven_n make_v sower_n the_o whole_a lump_n but_o if_o they_o leave_v we_o god_n word_n entire_a and_o sound_a we_o be_v not_o only_o ready_a to_o keep_v charity_n
