hypocritical_a and_o counterfeit_a since_o god_n have_v give_v thou_o the_o body_n of_o a_o man_n look_v upward_o towards_o heaven_n do_v not_o take_v to_o thyself_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o beast_n grovel_v on_o the_o earth_n here_o below_o viii_o see_v god_n at_o the_o first_o give_v man_n perfect_a beauty_n in_o regard_n both_o of_o temper_n and_o proportion_n then_o let_v all_o defect_n or_o deformity_n which_o thou_o see_v in_o any_o not_o move_v thou_o to_o contemn_v their_o person_n but_o rather_o to_o lament_v the_o common_a misery_n of_o man_n nature_n fall_v into_o sin_n the_o the_o body_n and_o then_o put_v into_o the_o body_n but_o that_o at_o once_o it_o be_v both_o create_v and_o infuse_v into_o the_o body_n sect_n 1._o now_o let_v we_o here_o speak_v a_o little_a of_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o then_o of_o its_o power_n and_o faculty_n 1._o for_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v a_o spirit_n and_o herein_o most_o like_a unto_o the_o angel_n of_o any_o other_o creature_n and_o though_o the_o wise_a man_n do_v communicate_v this_o name_n to_o the_o life_n of_o a_o beast_n yet_o he_o show_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o these_o two_o sort_n of_o spirit_n say_v the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n that_o go_v upward_o and_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o beast_n that_o go_v downward_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o beast_n or_o that_o which_o give_v a_o man_n be_v of_o a_o high_a nature_n than_o any_o of_o these_o gross_a material_a body_n and_o not_o rise_v out_o of_o they_o but_o be_v create_v immediate_o of_o god_n the_o father_n of_o spirit_n it_o go_v upward_o it_o be_v present_v before_o the_o lord_n in_o judgement_n after_o its_o departure_n from_o the_o body_n 2._o it_o be_v such_o a_o spirit_n as_o can_v subsist_v alone_o of_o it_o self_n out_o of_o the_o body_n so_o the_o apostle_n make_v mention_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o just_a man_n make_v perfect_a heb._n 12._o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o saint_n now_o in_o heaven_n who_o body_n rest_v in_o the_o dust_n and_o this_o show_v the_o excellent_a matter_n of_o man_n spirit_n far_o above_o the_o life_n of_o the_o beast_n or_o any_o unreasonable_a creature_n that_o it_o can_v subsist_v when_o it_o be_v sever_v from_o the_o body_n this_o show_v that_o it_o do_v not_o depend_v upon_o the_o body_n nor_o be_v extract_v out_o of_o it_o but_o rather_o that_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o body_n depend_v on_o it_o it_o can_v live_v without_o the_o body_n but_o the_o body_n without_o it_o rot_v putrefy_v and_o moulder_v away_o into_o dust_n dust_n return_v to_o dust_n as_o it_o be_v say_v the_o wise_a man_n and_o the_o spirit_n return_v to_o he_o that_o give_v it_o eccles._n 12._o 3._o it_o be_v a_o immortal_a spirit_n so_o this_o very_a place_n show_v that_o when_o dust_n return_v to_o dust_n when_o the_o body_n dissolve_v than_o the_o spirit_n live_v and_o yield_v up_o itself_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o so_o the_o scripture_n show_v both_o in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o godly_a and_o of_o the_o wicked_a the_o one_o shall_v go_v into_o life_n eternal_a and_o the_o other_o into_o everlasting_a punishment_n sect_n 2._o in_o the_o next_o place_n let_v we_o speak_v of_o the_o power_n and_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n here_o i_o shall_v speak_v first_o of_o those_o which_o be_v common_a to_o it_o with_o other_o creature_n viz._n those_o which_o they_o call_v vegetative_a and_o sensitive_a which_o be_v find_v in_o the_o beast_n and_o bird_n these_o i_o call_v faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n although_o for_o my_o own_o part_n i_o concieve_v they_o not_o to_o be_v proper_o inherent_a in_o the_o reasonable_a soul_n but_o rather_o in_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o body_n for_o the_o intellectual_a soul_n be_v a_o spirit_n i_o can_v see_v how_o these_o brutish_a affection_n such_o as_o many_o of_o these_o be_v can_v be_v inherent_a in_o it_o especial_o because_o many_o of_o they_o as_o the_o faculty_n of_o attraction_n retention_n expulsion_n augmentation_n etc._n etc._n be_v ordinary_o exercise_v not_o only_o without_o the_o command_n but_o also_o without_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o reasonable_a soul_n which_o i_o know_v not_o how_o it_o can_v be_v if_o they_o be_v inherent_a in_o it_o immediate_o it_o be_v a_o single_a spiritual_a and_o intellectual_a be_v now_o these_o faculty_n be_v many_o which_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v and_o show_v his_o admirable_a wisdom_n in_o they_o 1._o of_o the_o vegetative_a part_n there_o be_v a_o nutritive_a or_o nourish_a property_n to_o which_o diverse_a other_o be_v serviceable_a as_o that_o of_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n which_o be_v proper_o a_o branch_n of_o the_o sensitive_a yet_o insensible_a creature_n be_v a_o servant_n to_o the_o vegetative_a for_o by_o these_o the_o appetite_n be_v provoke_v to_o seek_v for_o nourishment_n there_o be_v a_o digest_v faculty_n to_o concoct_v that_o nourishment_n that_o be_v receive_v first_o in_o the_o stomach_n then_o in_o the_o liver_n turn_v it_o into_o blood_n then_o in_o each_o several_a part_n turn_v it_o into_o substance_n in_o particular_a to_o these_o also_o belong_v these_o three_o inferior_a faculty_n attractive_a retentive_a expulsive_a 1._o attractive_a whereby_o every_o part_n have_v a_o power_n to_o draw_v nourishment_n unto_o itself_o so_o the_o head_n and_o upper_a part_n of_o the_o
it_o be_v perfect_a in_o its_o kind_n and_o therefore_o he_o have_v so_o much_o knowledge_n of_o his_o excellency_n as_o be_v sufficient_a to_o make_v he_o admire_v he_o love_v he_o magnify_v he_o above_o all_o thing_n and_o so_o much_o as_o be_v sufficient_a clear_o to_o direct_v he_o in_o any_o duty_n which_o by_o the_o first_o covenant_n and_o law_n of_o his_o creation_n he_o owe_v unto_o those_o thing_n which_o we_o call_v now_o hide_a quality_n in_o the_o creature_n be_v not_o hide_v from_o he_o and_o be_v now_o cover_v from_o we_o not_o in_o regard_n of_o their_o own_o nature_n breathe_v out_o again_o in_o a_o visible_a manner_n so_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n work_v and_o convey_v his_o heavenly_a influence_n in_o a_o hide_a invisible_a manner_n into_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o faithful_a but_o be_v visible_o breathe_v forth_o again_o as_o it_o be_v in_o regard_n of_o its_o fruit_n in_o holy_a speech_n and_o heavenly_a action_n that_o man_n may_v see_v the_o good_a work_n which_o he_o bring_v forth_o in_o the_o godly_a and_o glorify_v their_o father_n who_o be_v in_o heaven_n wonderful_a be_v the_o effect_n of_o the_o air_n and_o according_a to_o it_o our_o body_n be_v usual_o incline_v and_o dispose_v yea_o and_o our_o soul_n too_o in_o some_o respect_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o near_a neighbourhood_n between_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o body_n and_o the_o special_a affinity_n between_o the_o air_n and_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o body_n which_o be_v the_o immediate_a instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n we_o of_o this_o kingdom_n have_v special_a cause_n to_o bless_v god_n for_o one_o of_o the_o sweet_a and_o most_o temperate_a air_n in_o the_o world_n serve_v much_o for_o delight_n for_o health_n for_o our_o furtherance_n even_o in_o the_o best_a thing_n if_o we_o be_v careful_a to_o make_v the_o best_a use_n of_o such_o a_o blessing_n a_o quick_a and_o kind_o air_n be_v no_o small_a help_n to_o the_o spirit_n even_o in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n 2._o we_o may_v further_o consider_v that_o as_o such_o stop_n as_o hinder_v the_o air_n from_o pass_v too_o and_o fro_o do_v endanger_v the_o natural_a life_n so_o those_o sin_n that_o stop_v the_o lively_a work_n move_a and_o breathe_v of_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n do_v endanger_v the_o spiritual_a life_n the_o wind_n which_o be_v the_o air_n stir_v and_o move_v and_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o same_o in_o the_o air_n which_o the_o wave_n be_v in_o the_o sea_n be_v of_o wonderful_a force_n and_o strength_n it_o bear_v down_o tree_n building_n and_o thing_n of_o wonderful_a strength_n and_o bigness_n it_o toss_v the_o sea_n and_o roul_v in_o the_o wave_n and_o work_v wonder_n in_o the_o deep_a hereby_o magnify_v the_o almighty_a power_n of_o its_o creator_n who_o as_o the_o psalmist_n say_v ride_v upon_o the_o wing_n of_o the_o wind._n and_o yet_o you_o must_v remember_v that_o the_o wind_n and_o sea_n obey_v he_o who_o send_v a_o calm_a when_o jonas_n be_v cast_v out_o of_o the_o ship_n and_o at_o another_o time_n when_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o ship_n so_o when_o sin_n be_v cast_v out_o of_o the_o soul_n and_o christ_n receive_v and_o embrace_v than_o the_o tempest_n of_o sing_v than_o they_o do_v in_o feed_v and_o therefore_o they_o have_v soon_o do_v with_o this_o so_o shall_v a_o christian_n be_v more_o delight_v in_o converse_v with_o god_n in_o walk_v in_o the_o must_v not_o abuse_v meat_n and_o drink_n so_o as_o to_o clog_v and_o dull_v his_o spirit_n and_o make_v he_o more_o dull_a and_o dead_a in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o so_o to_o refresh_v himself_o that_o he_o may_v be_v the_o more_o cheerful_a and_o lively_a in_o his_o heavenly_a flight_n 7._o as_o the_o bird_n not_o sow_v nor_o gather_v into_o barnes_n as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o yet_o be_v feed_v by_o our_o heavenly_a father_n so_o shall_v a_o child_n of_o god_n depend_v upon_o his_o providence_n without_o distrustful_a ear_n against_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n though_o not_o without_o moderate_a and_o christian_n care_n which_o serve_v the_o providence_n of_o god_n 8._o as_o the_o bird_n have_v find_v somewhat_o to_o satisfy_v its_o hunger_n by_o its_o esteem_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n than_o many_o sparrow_n know_v certain_o that_o thy_o hair_n be_v number_v and_o that_o none_o of_o they_o can_v fall_v to_o the_o ground_n without_o thy_o heavenly_a father_n 10._o consider_v that_o as_o when_o the_o bird_n fly_v high_a it_o take_v least_o notice_n of_o earthly_a thing_n and_o be_v least_o move_v with_o they_o and_o affect_v towards_o they_o so_o when_o a_o christian_a be_v most_o raise_v in_o spiritual_a affection_n to_o the_o great_a height_n of_o heavenly-mindedness_a keep_v near_a heaven_n than_o be_v the_o earth_n far_o out_o of_o sight_n and_o he_o be_v least_o move_v with_o the_o thing_n here_o below_o and_o best_a able_a to_o contemn_v earthly_a vanity_n he_o be_v too_o far_o above_o these_o to_o be_v much_o affect_v towards_o they_o therefore_o this_o shall_v make_v we_o think_v of_o the_o exhortation_n of_o the_o apostle_n mind_v the_o thing_n which_o be_v above_o and_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o help_v ourselves_o against_o earthly_a affection_n and_o fleshly_a lust_n think_v with_o thyself_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o i_o be_o so_o earthly-minded_n that_o my_o affection_n be_v so_o engage_v to_o this_o or_o that_o in_o the_o world_n yet_o i_o can_v come_v off_o nor_o free_v myself_o that_o i_o can_v scarce_o persuade_v my_o own_o heart_n to_o be_v without_o these_o and_o these_o thing_n it_o be_v this_o because_o my_o heart_n be_v not_o carry_v aloft_o it_o draw_v too_o near_o the_o ground_n it_o withdraw_v too_o much_o from_o god_n if_o i_o shall_v keep_v up_o my_o heart_n close_o to_o god_n these_o thing_n will_v be_v out_o of_o sight_n the_o earth_n will_v seldom_o be_v in_o my_o thought_n at_o least_o not_o so_o as_o to_o work_v much_o upon_o my_o affection_n on_o the_o other_o side_n you_o see_v that_o those_o bird_n which_o use_v so_o much_o upon_o the_o ground_n they_o fly_v but_o soft_o as_o may_v be_v see_v by_o those_o that_o use_v about_o our_o house_n so_o also_o those_o christian_n that_o be_v much_o take_v up_o with_o the_o deal_n and_o business_n of_o the_o world_n they_o fly_v but_o soft_o have_v but_o slow_a affection_n and_o sluggish_a motion_n to_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n they_o go_v but_o cold_o about_o good_a duty_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v pray_v for_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o bear_v we_o upward_o 11._o consider_v also_o that_o as_o the_o bird_n can_v mount_v up_o into_o the_o air_n and_o yet_o light_a upon_o the_o earth_n too_o and_o receive_v some_o refreshment_n there_o whereas_o the_o beast_n can_v mount_v up_o and_o live_v in_o the_o air_n so_o a_o christian_a can_v and_o may_v partake_v of_o the_o natural_a comfort_n and_o refreshment_n of_o this_o life_n though_o in_o a_o moderate_a manner_n and_o measure_n as_o well_o as_o the_o natural_a man_n but_o the_o natural_a man_n can_v mount_v up_o to_o heaven_n can_v live_v in_o the_o air_n can_v live_v by_o the_o spirit_n he_o have_v no_o relish_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n the_o spiritual_a man_n judge_v all_o thing_n he_o can_v discern_v what_o be_v in_o nature_n but_o himself_o be_v judge_v of_o no_o man_n his_o excellency_n can_v be_v discern_v by_o the_o eye_n of_o nature_n 12._o again_o as_o the_o bird_n live_v in_o a_o stormy_a element_n and_o feel_v much_o alteration_n of_o weather_n heat_n cold_a wind_n etc._n etc._n as_o the_o air_n be_v the_o most_o unsettle_a of_o all_o other_o part_n of_o the_o creation_n so_o christian_n do_v live_v in_o a_o condition_n subject_a to_o manifold_a alteration_n subject_a to_o many_o storm_n of_o persecution_n and_o temptation_n and_o as_o the_o bird_n be_v then_o especial_o in_o danger_n by_o snare_n and_o gin_n when_o they_o be_v upon_o the_o earth_n to_o which_o they_o be_v not_o subject_a when_o they_o be_v aloft_o in_o the_o air_n so_o a_o christian_n be_v then_o in_o danger_n to_o be_v ensnare_v and_o entangle_v when_o he_o deal_v with_o earthly_a thing_n and_o be_v most_o affect_a to_o the_o thing_n below_o when_o he_o be_v most_o heavenly-minded_n then_o be_v he_o most_o out_o of_o danger_n of_o these_o snare_n 13._o the_o bird_n in_o the_o air_n meet_v with_o bird_n of_o prey_n there_o also_o which_o be_v ready_a to_o seize_v upon_o they_o and_o destroy_v they_o so_o the_o devil_n who_o be_v call_v the_o prince_n that_o rule_v in_o the_o air_n do_v especial_o choose_v to_o assault_v those_o that_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n even_o then_o when_o they_o be_v most_o spiritual_a endeavour_v to_o pull_v down_o those_o that_o be_v high_a mean_a man_n be_v natural_o more_o excellent_a than_o the_o most_o excellent_a among_o the_o beast_n so_o though_o the_o child_n of_o this_o world_n do_v in_o some_o thing_n outstrip_v the_o child_n of_o light_n as_o many_o time_n in_o beauty_n strength_n wit_n outward_a carriage_n policy_n civil_a deportment_n etc._n etc._n yet_o the_o mean_a true_a christian_a be_v more_o excellent_a than_o his_o best_a carnal_a neighbour_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n restore_v to_o he_o 7._o again_o see_v the_o beast_n have_v those_o pleasure_n whereof_o the_o sense_n be_v capable_a musâ—_n not_o judge_v of_o it_o according_a to_o those_o distemper_n whereunto_o the_o body_n now_o be_v subject_a yet_o now_o in_o some_o temper_n above_o other_o there_o be_v some_o degree_n of_o evenness_n which_o give_v we_o a_o shadow_n of_o that_o exactness_n that_o be_v at_o the_o first_o but_o in_o that_o state_n of_o creation_n there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o defect_n nor_o disorder_n in_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o body_n nothing_o which_o a_o man_n can_v have_v wish_v to_o have_v be_v otherwise_o than_o it_o be_v the_o constitution_n and_o complexion_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o stature_n and_o every_o part_n its_o due_a measure_n it_o be_v exact_o shape_v and_o frame_v nothing_o want_v nothing_o exceed_v nothing_o beyond_o nothing_o short_a of_o the_o due_a size_n and_o this_o exactness_n both_o of_o temper_n and_o proportion_n make_v up_o the_o perfect_a beauty_n and_o comeliness_n which_o god_n give_v to_o the_o body_n of_o man_n in_o his_o creation_n 3._o in_o excellent_a majesty_n be_v give_v he_o as_o a_o lord_n and_o ruler_n over_o the_o other_o creature_n who_o be_v make_v to_o bow_v down_o their_o back_n in_o subjection_n unto_o he_o and_o by_o the_o very_o stoop_v of_o their_o body_n to_o do_v he_o homage_n and_o acknowledge_v his_o dominion_n
that_o be_v true_a which_o be_v say_v though_o often_o false_a but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n one_o be_v ignorant_a he_o have_v a_o blind_a soul_n another_o have_v a_o graceless_a profane_a and_o unsanctified_a soul_n lade_v with_o many_o sin_n in_o great_a danger_n to_o perish_v for_o ever_o but_o when_o shall_v you_o hear_v such_o a_o one_o complain_v of_o his_o neighbour_n for_o hardheartedness_n towards_o his_o soul_n in_o not_o pity_v his_o spiritual_a misery_n in_o not_o instruct_v he_o in_o his_o ignorance_n when_o shall_v you_o hear_v one_o of_o these_o complain_v oh_o i_o have_v a_o neighbour_n that_o have_v knowledge_n he_o know_v that_o i_o be_o ignorant_a of_o god_n but_o alas_o he_o be_v hard-hearted_a he_o do_v not_o pity_v my_o soul_n he_o will_v soon_o see_v i_o damn_v in_o my_o ignorance_n than_o once_o open_a his_o mouth_n to_o instruct_v i_o in_o any_o matter_n of_o salvation_n or_o when_o shall_v we_o hear_v one_o that_o go_v on_o in_o sin_n cry_v out_o of_o another_o in_o this_o respect_n i_o have_v a_o neighbour_n see_v my_o soul_n in_o a_o fearful_a case_n he_o perceive_v i_o to_o go_v on_o in_o the_o stubbornness_n of_o my_o heart_n and_o he_o know_v that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n will_v one_o day_n smoke_n against_o i_o for_o it_o and_o yet_o his_o heart_n be_v hard_a he_o have_v no_o pity_n upon_o i_o he_o do_v never_o once_o open_v if_o it_o have_v only_o a_o body_n to_o be_v feed_v and_o clothe_v and_o not_o a_o soul_n to_o be_v save_v sect_n 5._o v._o sigh_v god_n do_v create_v our_o soul_n let_v we_o conceive_v that_o he_o make_v they_o for_o himself_o therefore_o let_v every_o faculty_n be_v give_v up_o to_o his_o service_n 1._o as_o for_o thy_o imagination_n let_v it_o be_v dedicate_v to_o the_o service_n of_o god_n strive_v after_o far_a perfection_n but_o now_o compare_v thyself_o with_o this_o image_n of_o god_n in_o adam_n before_o his_o fall_n and_o see_v what_o thou_o have_v to_o do_v how_o much_o be_v amiss_o in_o thou_o and_o must_v be_v amend_v when_o a_o man_n have_v lose_v a_o great_a estate_n and_o by_o some_o mean_n begin_v to_o recover_v again_o he_o will_v scarce_o think_v he_o have_v enough_o until_o he_o have_v get_v as_o much_o as_o he_o have_v before_o he_o will_v fain_o be_v as_o rich_a as_o ever_o he_o be_v man_n be_v too_o greedy_a of_o these_o thing_n but_o as_o the_o
