divine_a thing_n upon_o you_o religion_n go_v never_o far_a than_o the_o upper_a surface_n of_o your_o heart_n few_o deep_a thought_n of_o god_n and_o of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n to_o come_v all_o be_v but_o slight_a and_o transient_a glance_n the_o three_o be_v thorny-ground_n this_o relate_v to_o the_o care_n and_o pleasure_n and_o all_o the_o interest_n of_o this_o life_n see_v st._n mark_n 4._o 1._o and_o st._n luke_n 8._o 5._o all_o these_o together_o be_v the_o thorn_n and_o these_o grow_v in_o heart_n that_o do_v more_o deep_o receive_v the_o seed_n and_o send_v it_o forth_o and_o spring_v up_o more_o hopeful_o than_o either_o of_o the_o other_o two_o and_o yet_o choke_v it_o oh_o the_o pity_n many_o be_v thus_o almost_o at_o heaven_n so_o much_o desire_n of_o renovation_n and_o some_o endeavour_n after_o it_o and_o yet_o the_o thorn_n prevail_v miserable_a thorn_n the_o base_a thing_n of_o a_o perish_a life_n draw_v away_o the_o strength_n of_o affection_n suck_v the_o sap_n of_o the_o soul_n our_o other_o seed_n and_o harvest_n our_o corn_n and_o hay_n our_o shop_n and_o ship_n our_o trade_n and_o bargain_n our_o suit_n and_o pretension_n for_o place_n and_o employment_n of_o gain_n or_o credit_n husband_n and_o wife_n and_o child_n and_o house_n and_o train_z our_o feast_n and_o entertainment_n and_o other_o pleasure_n of_o sense_n our_o civility_n and_o compliment_n and_o a_o world_n of_o those_o in_o all_o the_o world_n be_v these_o thorn_n and_o they_o overspread_v all_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o eye_n the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o pride_n of_o life_n and_o for_o how_o long_o be_v all_o the_o advantage_n and_o and_o delight_n of_o these_o alas_o that_o so_o poor_a thing_n shall_v prejudice_v we_o of_o the_o rich_a and_o bless_a increase_n of_o this_o divine_a seed_n the_o last_o be_v good_a ground_n a_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n not_o much_o fineness_n here_o not_o many_o question_n and_o dispute_n but_o honest_a simplicity_n sweet_a sincerity_n that_o be_v all_o a_o humble_a single_a desire_n to_o eye_n and_o to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o this_o from_o love_n to_o himself_o this_o make_v the_o soul_n abound_v in_o the_o fruit_n of_o holiness_n receive_v the_o word_n as_o the_o ground_n of_o it_o different_a degree_n be_v indeed_o some_o thirty_o some_o sixty_o and_o some_o a_o hundred_o fold_n yet_o the_o low_a aim_v at_o the_o high_a not_o rest_v satisfy_v yet_o grow_v more_o fruitful_a if_o thirty_o last_o year_n desire_v to_o bring_v forth_o sixty_o this_o
relation_n your_o god_n to_o sin_n against_o he_o so_o gross_o so_o continued_o with_o so_o high_a a_o hand_n and_o so_o impenitent_a heart_n not_o reclaim_v by_o all_o his_o mercy_n by_o the_o remembrance_n of_o his_o covenant_n make_v with_o you_o and_o mercy_n bestow_v on_o you_o nor_o by_o the_o fear_n of_o his_o judgement_n threaten_v nor_o by_o the_o feel_n of_o they_o inflict_v no_o return_v nor_o relent_v not_o of_o his_o own_o people_n to_o their_o god_n sure_a you_o must_v be_v yet_o more_o punish_v you_o only_o have_v i_o know_v of_o all_o the_o family_n of_o the_o earth_n will_v separate_v and_o hide_v the_o face_n of_o god_n from_o they_o their_o daily_a inevitable_a frailty_n do_v not_o this_o but_o either_o a_o course_n of_o careless_a walk_n and_o many_o little_a unlawful_a liberty_n take_v to_o themselves_o that_o will_v rise_v and_o gather_v as_o a_o cloud_n and_o hide_v the_o face_n of_o god_n or_o some_o one_o gross_a sin_n especial_o if_o often_o reiterated_a will_v prove_v as_o a_o firm_a stone_n wall_n or_o rather_o as_o a_o brazen_a wall_n build_v up_o by_o their_o own_o hand_n betwixt_o they_o and_o heaven_n and_o will_v not_o be_v so_o easy_o dissolve_v or_o break_v down_o and_o yet_o till_o that_o be_v the_o light_n of_o his_o countenance_n who_o be_v the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n will_v be_v eclipse_v and_o withhold_v from_o it_o and_o this_o consider_v beside_o that_o law_n of_o love_n that_o will_v forbid_v so_o foul_a ingratitude_n yet_o i_o say_v this_o consider_v even_o our_o own_o interest_n will_v make_v we_o wary_a thou_o venture_v upon_o any_o know_a sin_n thou_o be_v not_o hazardless_a and_o free_a from_o all_o damage_n by_o it_o if_o thou_o have_v need_v of_o that_o argument_n to_o restrain_v thou_o then_o before_o thou_o run_v upon_o it_o sit_v down_o and_o reckon_v the_o expense_n see_v what_o it_o will_v cost_v thou_o if_o thou_o do_v commit_v it_o thou_o know_v that_o once_o it_o cost_v the_o heart_n blood_n of_o thy_o redeemer_n to_o expâ—ate_v it_o and_o be_v it_o a_o light_a matter_n to_o thou_o and_o though_o that_o pay_v all_o that_o score_n nothing_o thou_o can_v suffer_v be_v able_a and_o favour_n he_o that_o order_v his_o conversation_n aright_o he_o see_v the_o love_a kindness_n of_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v show_v to_o he_o he_o live_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o it_o but_o if_o any_o such_o separation_n be_v make_v yet_o be_v it_o thy_o great_a desire_n to_o have_v it_o remove_v why_o there_o be_v hope_n see_v to_o it_o labour_v to_o break_v down_o and_o pray_v to_o he_o
