earthquake_n be_v slay_v of_o man_n seven_o thousand_o and_o the_o remnant_n be_v affright_v and_o give_v glory_n to_o the_o god_n of_o heaven_n this_o remnant_n here_o speak_v of_o be_v distinct_a from_o the_o witness_n whether_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v for_o the_o beast_n or_o other_o they_o be_v not_o of_o the_o witness_n but_o be_v some_o that_o be_v affright_v at_o the_o witness_n have_v a_o spirit_n of_o life_n from_o god_n put_v upon_o they_o and_o their_o stand_n upon_o their_o foot_n and_o therefore_o not_o of_o they_o but_o some_o other_o and_o they_o be_v not_o of_o the_o seven_o thousand_o neither_o because_o they_o be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o remnant_n or_o the_o residue_n so_o then_o the_o meaning_n of_o this_o clause_n be_v this_o that_o the_o raise_n up_o of_o the_o witness_n in_o such_o a_o eminent_a manner_n to_o the_o shake_n of_o great_a babylon_n do_v so_o work_v upon_o the_o residue_n of_o people_n as_o be_v not_o of_o the_o witness_n nor_o of_o the_o seven_o thousand_o as_o that_o either_o they_o be_v affright_v at_o it_o or_o have_v their_o mouth_n open_v to_o glorify_v god_n in_o it_o or_o both_o and_o thus_o it_o be_v in_o the_o year_n 1645._o the_o generality_n of_o people_n both_o in_o the_o kingdom_n and_o in_o other_o that_o either_o see_v or_o hear_v of_o the_o great_a thing_n god_n do_v for_o the_o saint_n be_v either_o affright_v and_o amaze_v at_o it_o or_o else_o do_v glorify_v god_n in_o work_v so_o wonderful_o as_o he_o do_v for_o when_o god_n do_v work_v so_o wonderful_o and_o beyond_o expectation_n in_o give_v victory_n upon_o victory_n and_o success_n upon_o success_n unto_o his_o people_n so_o as_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v as_o they_o that_o dream_v i_o say_v when_o god_n do_v thus_o than_o the_o generality_n of_o people_n do_v admire_v and_o acknowledge_v god_n in_o it_o and_o give_v he_o the_o glory_n of_o it_o they_o glorify_v the_o god_n of_o heaven_n that_o have_v do_v such_o great_a thing_n in_o such_o a_o unexpected_a manner_n and_o in_o so_o short_a a_o time_n and_o thus_o the_o remnant_n be_v affright_v and_o give_v glory_n to_o the_o god_n of_o heaven_n verse_n 14._o the_o second_o woe_n be_v past_a and_o behold_v the_o three_o woe_n come_v quick_o in_o the_o 8._o chapter_n at_o the_o 13._o verse_n it_o be_v say_v that_o a_o angel_n do_v fly_v through_o the_o midst_n of_o heaven_n say_v with_o a_o loud_a voice_n woe_n wo_n wo_n to_o the_o inhabiter_n of_o the_o earth_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o other_o voice_n of_o the_o trumpet_n of_o the_o three_o angel_n which_o be_v yet_o to_o sound_v and_o at_o the_o 9_o chapter_n in_o the_o former_a part_n of_o that_o chapter_n there_o be_v a_o description_n of_o a_o great_a judgement_n of_o god_n upon_o wicked_a man_n such_o as_o have_v not_o the_o seal_n of_o god_n in_o their_o forehead_n at_o the_o 12._o verse_n it_o be_v say_v one_o woe_n be_v past_a and_o behold_v there_o come_v two_o woe_n more_o hereafter_o and_o now_o upon_o the_o resurrection_n of_o the_o witness_n which_o bring_v in_o such_o a_o great_a earthquake_n at_o the_o same_o hour_n with_o it_o which_o give_v such_o a_o terrible_a blow_n to_o babylon_n and_o the_o beast_n it_o be_v say_v in_o this_o verse_n that_o the_o second_o woe_n be_v past_a and_o the_o three_o woe_n come_v quick_o so_o that_o there_o remain_v one_o great_a woe_n more_o to_o come_v upon_o the_o babylonian_n inhabiter_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o what_o this_o woe_n be_v which_o be_v to_o come_v now_o quick_o upon_o the_o inhabiter_n of_o the_o earth_n will_v be_v appear_v in_o the_o follow_a verse_n of_o this_o chap._n as_o the_o take_n off_o the_o kingdom_n of_o this_o world_n from_o the_o beast_n and_o from_o all_o other_o to_o be_v subject_v only_o to_o our_o lord_n and_o his_o christ_n for_o he_o to_o reign_v over_o they_o for_o ever_o and_o ever_o etc._n etc._n and_o now_o that_o the_o witness_n be_v rise_v this_o be_v to_o be_v expect_v and_o that_o quick_o and_o that_o to_o the_o great_a joy_n of_o all_o saint_n and_o to_o the_o cast_v down_o of_o all_o their_o enemy_n that_o be_v implacable_a and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o explication_n of_o that_o part_n of_o the_o chapter_n which_o at_o this_o time_n i_o intend_v to_o treat_v of_o i_o now_o come_v to_o draw_v some_o deducation_n from_o it_o wherewith_o i_o shall_v conclude_v this_o treatise_n the_o application_n these_o verse_n be_v thus_o open_v many_o profitable_a deduction_n do_v arise_v therefrom_o but_o i_o shall_v pass_v by_o some_o of_o they_o and_o be_v as_o brief_a as_o i_o may_v out_o unto_o they_o by_o their_o god_n who_o have_v a_o tender_a love_n unto_o they_o and_o care_n over_o they_o in_o their_o affliction_n the_o saint_n of_o god_n who_o be_v his_o temple_n and_o the_o holy_a and_o belove_a city_n we_o see_v here_o be_v measure_v out_o unto_o a_o afflict_a sad_a condition_n and_o their_o affliction_n come_v not_o at_o random_n nor_o according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o their_o enemy_n no_o but_o they_o be_v measure_v unto_o affliction_n and_o their_o enemy_n can_v have_v no_o power_n over_o they_o but_o that_o they_o be_v by_o their_o god_n give_v unto_o the_o gentile_n to_o be_v tread_v under_o foot_n otherwise_o it_o can_v not_o have_v be_v possible_a for_o the_o gentile_n to_o have_v tread_v they_o under_o foot_n now_o since_o it_o be_v god_n act_n towards_o his_o people_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v for_o their_o good_a and_o therefore_o paul_n speak_v of_o the_o affliction_n and_o the_o suffering_n that_o saint_n undergo_v speak_v of_o it_o as_o their_o privilege_n phil._n 1._o 29._o unto_o you_o it_o be_v give_v in_o the_o behalf_n of_o christ_n not_o only_o to_o believe_v on_o he_o but_o also_o to_o suffer_v for_o his_o sake_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o the_o prophecy_n of_o micah_n speak_v of_o the_o rod_n of_o affliction_n as_o of_o the_o food_n of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n micah_n 7._o 14._o feed_v thy_o people_n with_o thy_o rod_n the_o flock_n of_o thy_o heritage_n which_o dwell_v solitary_o in_o the_o wood_n and_o as_o in_o micah_n god_n be_v say_v to_o feed_v his_o people_n with_o his_o rod_n so_o he_o be_v say_v to_o comfort_v they_o with_o his_o rod_n for_o say_v david_n psal_n 23._o 4._o thy_o rod_n and_o thy_o staff_n they_o comfort_v i_o and_o therefore_o let_v saint_n in_o a_o afflict_a condition_n be_v comfort_v in_o this_o consideration_n that_o their_o affliction_n what_o ever_o it_o be_v be_v that_o which_o come_v not_o by_o chance_n as_o man_n use_v to_o say_v nor_o according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o man_n but_o their_o god_n have_v dispense_v it_o out_o unto_o they_o who_o do_v it_o in_o great_a wisdom_n and_o great_a love_n and_o give_v they_o out_o affliction_n as_o their_o privilege_n as_o their_o food_n and_o for_o their_o comfort_n o_o therefore_o let_v poor_a soul_n in_o affliction_n be_v no_o more_o cast_v down_o and_o walk_v no_o more_o heavy_o nor_o go_v mourn_v all_o the_o day_n long_v no_o more_o because_o of_o their_o affliction_n but_o walk_v comfortable_o under_o affliction_n because_o they_o come_v from_o a_o love_a god_n who_o have_v appoint_v they_o thereunto_o here_o that_o the_o gentile_n the_o mystical_a babylonian_n be_v by_o god_n appoint_v to_o afflict_v the_o people_n of_o god_n to_o tread_v the_o holy_a city_n under_o foot_n before_o ever_o they_o have_v a_o be_v now_o as_o god_n do_v in_o love_n suffer_v his_o people_n to_o be_v afflict_v so_o in_o wrath_n he_o usual_o give_v up_o wicked_a man_n to_o be_v the_o instrument_n of_o afflict_v his_o people_n for_o as_o the_o suffering_n of_o saint_n work_v out_o for_o they_o a_o great_a weight_n
in_o sackcloth_n be_v expire_v first_o it_o may_v be_v some_o can_v receive_v it_o because_o they_o look_v for_o far_a judgement_n to_o come_v upon_o this_o kingdom_n wherein_o outward_o the_o saint_n may_v suffer_v also_o because_o of_o the_o great_a provoke_a sin_n of_o this_o kingdom_n as_o drunkenness_n and_o adultery_n and_o oath_n and_o their_o enter_v into_o so_o many_o covenant_n concern_v religious_a thing_n for_o which_o they_o have_v no_o sufficient_a warrant_n now_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o oppression_n of_o the_o poor_a and_o mean_a sort_n of_o people_n and_o the_o great_a neglect_n of_o do_v justice_n general_o etc._n etc._n now_o to_o these_o i_o say_v that_o it_o be_v true_a that_o if_o god_n shall_v deal_v with_o this_o nation_n according_a to_o its_o demerit_n then_o indeed_o no_o other_o can_v be_v expect_v but_o a_o utter_a desolation_n of_o it_o that_o it_o may_v either_o swim_v in_o blood_n or_o burn_v with_o fire_n until_o it_o be_v consume_v but_o first_o i_o desire_v you_o to_o consider_v that_o god_n have_v a_o very_a great_a number_n of_o his_o dear_a saint_n in_o this_o kingdom_n in_o who_o he_o delight_v and_o for_o who_o sake_n he_o may_v and_o i_o have_v almost_o say_v will_v spare_v this_o kingdom_n and_o spare_v the_o city_n and_o town_n and_o county_n where_o they_o be_v for_o if_o god_n will_v have_v spare_v sodom_n for_o ten_o righteous_a person_n we_o have_v a_o great_a ground_n of_o hope_n that_o he_o will_v spare_v london_n yea_o all_o england_n from_o a_o general_a devastation_n and_o desolation_n have_v thousand_o of_o righteous_a person_n in_o london_n and_o in_o all_o england_n a_o very_a great_a number_n and_o how_o many_o plot_n of_o wicked_a man_n wherein_o they_o endeavour_v the_o ruin_n of_o this_o kingdom_n have_v god_n blast_v have_v such_o a_o great_a number_n of_o his_o precious_a jewel_n in_o it_o and_o second_o what_o though_o hâ—ere_o be_v in_o this_o kingdom_n many_o that_o be_v great_a enemy_n to_o jesus_n christ_n yet_o god_n can_v by_o his_o covenant_n of_o grace_n bring_v many_o of_o they_o in_o to_o the_o obedience_n of_o christ_n and_o make_v they_o of_o persecutor_n to_o become_v eminent_a saint_n and_o call_v those_o his_o people_n that_o be_v not_o his_o people_n and_o why_o shall_v we_o doubt_v whether_o he_o will_v do_v so_o since_o these_o be_v the_o time_n wherein_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o do_v so_o and_o have_v already_o begin_v to_o do_v it_o but_o three_o if_o it_o be_v so_o that_o some_o be_v harden_v to_o destruction_n and_o they_o be_v never_o quiet_a but_o still_o be_v plot_v against_o the_o just_a to_o ruin_v they_o yet_o know_v they_o shall_v not_o prevail_v over_o the_o saint_n but_o in_o oppose_v they_o shall_v ruin_v themselves_o zech._n 12._o 3._o as_o appear_v in_o the_o follow_a discourse_n second_o doubtful_a thought_n may_v be_v in_o other_o that_o yet_o the_o saint_n may_v be_v overcome_v because_o they_o see_v they_o have_v so_o many_o enemy_n abroad_o and_o at_o home_n and_o they_o be_v speak_v great_a word_n and_o be_v still_o plot_v against_o they_o to_o such_o i_o say_v let_v they_o suppose_v that_o there_o be_v none_o that_o do_v dare_v to_o make_v any_o opposisition_n at_o all_o in_o this_o kingdom_n but_o that_o all_o thing_n go_v smooth_o on_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o those_o that_o be_v carry_v it_o on_o and_o if_o they_o can_v then_o believe_v that_o indeed_o god_n will_v not_o have_v his_o saint_n in_o this_o kingdom_n to_o be_v tread_v under_o foot_n by_o the_o beast_n any_o more_o then_o let_v they_o have_v the_o same_o faith_n to_o believe_v it_o now_o as_o know_v it_o be_v as_o easy_a with_o god_n to_o carry_v on_o this_o work_n over_o the_o mountain_n as_o over_o the_o plain_n and_o he_o will_v make_v the_o great_a mountain_n to_o become_v a_o plain_a before_o zerubbabel_n before_o his_o people_n zech._n 4._o 7._o he_o can_v command_v those_o that_o be_v prepare_v war_n against_o they_o to_o sit_v still_o and_o proceed_v no_o far_o and_o put_v a_o fear_n upon_o they_o or_o if_o they_o do_v go_v on_o yet_o he_o can_v make_v it_o to_o come_v to_o nothing_o and_o to_o be_v the_o most_o effectual_a way_n to_o lay_v they_o low_o and_o to_o raise_v his_o people_n high_o now_o if_o any_o particular_a man_n will_v be_v as_o sure_a of_o safety_n as_o all_o the_o witness_n in_o general_n be_v then_o if_o he_o be_v a_o man_n in_o any_o public_a employment_n let_v he_o according_a to_o his_o place_n oppose_v the_o beast_n and_o act_n for_o the_o welfare_n of_o all_o that_o wish_v well_o to_o zion_n and_o do_v justice_n unto_o all_o from_o the_o high_a unto_o the_o low_a and_o be_v more_o forward_o to_o act_v for_o the_o mean_a then_o for_o the_o high_a let_v he_o suppose_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o mean_a man_n etc._n that_o seek_v to_o he_o for_o just_a thing_n to_o be_v his_o own_o condition_n and_o act_n for_o he_o as_o he_o will_v be_v deal_v with_o himself_o be_v he_o in_o that_o condition_n for_o thus_o relieve_v of_o the_o poor_a and_o distress_a one_o be_v most_o acceptable_a to_o the_o lord_n of_o sabbath_n and_o in_o so_o do_v i_o be_o confident_a it_o will_v go_v well_o with_o he_o however_o it_o go_v with_o other_o again_o if_o he_o be_v a_o private_a man_n let_v he_o also_o in_o his_o place_n wish_v well_o to_o zion_n and_o oppose_v the_o beast_n so_o shall_v he_o also_o prosper_v in_o the_o prosperity_n of_o zion_n and_o now_o reader_n who_o ever_o thou_o be_v if_o thou_o do_v receive_v any_o benefit_n of_o any_o kind_n by_o read_v the_o ensue_a discourse_n whether_o of_o encouragement_n consolation_n information_n or_o quicken_a i_o beseech_v thou_o to_o return_v all_o the_o glory_n of_o it_o to_o the_o most_o high_a to_o who_o alone_o it_o be_v due_a who_o for_o that_o end_n make_v use_v of_o so_o weak_a a_o instrument_n in_o who_o if_o thou_o be_v a_o friend_n to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n apprehension_n neither_o to_o faith_n nor_o peace_n nor_o joy_n nor_o strength_n but_o have_v seem_v to_o be_v as_o unbelieving_a as_o carnal_a and_o as_o fleshly_a as_o ever_o walk_v heavy_o for_o a_o long_a time_n and_o that_o word_n which_o have_v be_v sweet_a to_o other_o that_o at_o the_o same_o time_n hear_v it_o have_v be_v as_o nothing_o to_o they_o that_o word_n which_o have_v raise_v the_o heart_n and_o strengthen_v the_o faith_n and_o inflame_v the_o love_n of_o other_o have_v seem_v to_o have_v no_o effect_n upon_o they_o and_o thus_o some_o have_v continue_v week_n month_n nay_o year_n together_o and_o if_o they_o have_v have_v any_o revive_n it_o have_v be_v but_o as_o a_o morning_n dew_n and_o yet_o at_o last_o when_o the_o father_n appoint_a time_n be_v come_v wherein_o he_o have_v raise_v they_o up_o to_o joy_n and_o peace_n in_o believe_v and_o give_v they_o life_n vigour_n and_o strength_n then_o have_v the_o spirit_n bring_v to_o their_o remembrance_n the_o thing_n which_o they_o hear_v many_o year_n before_o and_o then_o have_v they_o be_v wonderful_o overcome_v and_o take_v with_o it_o and_o it_o have_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n abundant_o in_o they_o therefore_o saint_n you_o that_o say_v you_o find_v little_a or_o no_o effect_n the_o word_n have_v upon_o you_o for_o the_o present_a be_v not_o thereby_o discourage_v but_o go_v on_o to_o read_v and_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n still_o for_o it_o be_v a_o mean_n which_o be_v often_o bless_a to_o many_o but_o three_o be_v it_o so_o that_o it_o be_v a_o bless_a thing_n to_o read_v and_o hear_v the_o word_n so_o as_o to_o keep_v it_o then_o it_o serve_v to_o exhort_v all_o as_o to_o hear_v and_o read_v the_o word_n so_o to_o look_v beyond_o it_o in_o the_o frequent_a hear_n and_o read_v of_o it_o wait_v for_o the_o come_n in_o of_o the_o spirit_n for_o the_o blessing_n be_v not_o pronounce_v upon_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o word_n only_o but_o such_o as_o hear_v it_o and_o keep_v it_o and_o hear_v it_o and_o do_v it_o and_o then_o shall_v thou_o hear_v the_o word_n so_o as_o to_o keep_v it_o when_o the_o spirit_n come_v along_o with_o it_o therefore_o when_o thou_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n do_v not_o rest_v upon_o the_o bare_a hear_n of_o the_o word_n but_o expect_v the_o come_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o that_o thou_o may_v thus_o do_v consider_v that_o there_o be_v frequent_a precedent_n in_o scripture_n that_o in_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n the_o spirit_n have_v be_v give_v as_o you_o have_v it_o act._n 10._o 44._o while_o peter_n yet_o speak_v these_o word_n the_o holy_a ghost_n fall_v on_o all_o they_o which_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o in_o the_o second_o of_o the_o act_n at_o the_o 41._o verse_n we_o find_v that_o there_o be_v three_o thousand_o soul_n convert_v at_o the_o preach_n of_o peter_n and_o when_o philip_n go_v down_o to_o samaria_n and_o preach_v the_o word_n there_o be_v by_o his_o preach_v many_o convert_v both_o man_n and_o woman_n as_o appear_v act_n 8._o 12._o there_o be_v several_a other_o passage_n in_o the_o act_n to_o this_o purpose_n and_o gal._n 3._o 2._o say_v the_o apostle_n receive_v you_o
