him renowned ANd * Chap. 7.8 Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt and took Pharaohs daughter and brought her into the city of David until he had made an end of building his own house and the house of the LORD and the wall of Jerusalem round about 2 Onely the people sacrificed in high places because there was no house built unto the name of the LORD until those days 3 And Solomon loved the LORD walking in the statutes of David his father onely he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places 4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there for that was the great high place a thousand burnt-offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar 5 ¶ In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night and God said Ask what I shall give thee 6 And Solomon said Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great ‖ Or bounty mercy according as he walked before thee in truth and in righteousness and in uprightness of heart with thee and thou hast kept for him this great kindness that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne as it is this day 7 And now O LORD my God thou hast made thy servant king in stead of David my father and I am but a little childe I know not how to go out or come in 8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen a great people that cannot be numbred nor counted for multitude 9 * 2 Chr. â— 10 Give therefore thy servant an †Heb. hearing understanding heart to judge thy people that I may discern between good and bad for who is able to judge this thy so great a people 10 And the speech pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing 11 And God said unto him Because thou hast asked this thing and hast not asked for thy self †Heb. many days long life neither hast asked riches for thy self nor hast asked the life of thine enemies but hast asked for thy self understanding †Heb. to hear to discern judgement 12 Behold I have done according to thy words lo I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart so that there was none like thee before thee neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee 13 And I have also * Wisd 7.11 Mat. 6.33 given thee that which thou hast not asked both riches and honour so that there ‖ Or hath not been shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days 14 And if thou wilt walk in my ways to keep my statutes and my commandments * Chap. 15.5 as thy father David did walk then I will lengthen thy days 15 And Solomon awoke and behold it was a dream and he came to Jerufalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD and offered up burnt-offerings and offered peace offerings and made a feast to all his servants 16 ¶ Then came there two women that were harlots unto the king and stood before him 17 And the one woman said O my lord I and this woman dwell in one house and I was delivered of a childe with her in the house 18 And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered that this woman was delivered also and we were together there was no stranger with us in the house save we two in the house 19 And this womans childe died in the night because she overlaid it 20 And she arose at midnight and took my son from beside me while thine hand-maid slept and laid it in her bosom and laid her dead childe in my bosom 21 And when I rose in the morning to give my childe suck behold it was dead but when I had considered it in the morning behold it was not my son which I did bear 22 And the other woman said Nay but the living is my son and the dead is thy son and this said No but the dead is thy son and the living is my son Thus they spake before the king 23 Then said the king The one saith This is my son that liveth and thy son is the dead and the other saith Nay but thy son is the dead and my son is the living 24 And the king said Bring me a sword And they brought a sword before the king 25 And the king said Divide the living childe in two and give half to the one and half to the other 26 Then spake the woman whose the living childe was unto the king for her bowels †Heb. were â—et yerned upon her son and she said O my lord give her the living childe and in no wise slay it but the other said Let it be neither mine nor thine but divide it 27 Then the king answered and said Give her the living childe and in no wise slay it she is the mother thereof 28 And all Israel heard of the judgement which the king had judged and they feared the king for they saw that the wisdom of God was †Heb. in the midst of him in him to do judgement CHAP. XX. 1 Hezekiah having received a message of death by prayer hath his life lengthned 8 The sun â—oeth ten degrees backward for a signe of that promise 12 Berodach-baladan sending to visit Hezekiah because of the wonder hath notice of his treasures 14 Isaiah understanding thereof foretelleth the Babylonian captivity 20 Manasseh succeedeth Hezekiah IN * 2 Chr. 32.24 Isa 3â— 1 those days was Hezekiah sick unto death and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him and said unto him Thus saith the LORD †Heb. give charge concerning thine house Set thine house in order for thou shalt die and not live 2 Then he turned his face to the wall and prayed unto the LORD saying 3 I beseech thee O LORD remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart and have done that which is good in thy sight and Hezekiah wept †Heb. with a great weeping sore 4 And it came to pass afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle ‖ Or city court that the word of the LORD came to him saying 5 Turn again and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people Thus saith the LORD the God of David thy father I have heard thy prayer I have seen thy tears behold I will heal thee on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD 6 And I will add unto thy days fifteen years and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria and I will defend this city for mine own sake and for my servant Davids sake 7 And Isaiah said Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boyl and he recovered 8 ¶ And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah What shall be the signe that the LORD will heal me and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day 9 And Isaiah said This signe shalt thou have of the LORD that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken shall the shadow go forward ten degrees or go back ten degrees 10 And Hezekiah answered It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees nay but let the shadow return backward ten degrees 11 And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the LORD and * Isa 28.8 Ecclus 48.23 he brought the shadow ten
thereof let the fields rejoyce and all that is therein 33 Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD because he cometh to judge the earth 34 * Psal 10â— 1. 118.1 136. â— O give thanks unto the LORD for he is good for his mercy endureth for ever 35 And say ye Save us O God of our salvation and gather us together and deliver us from the heathen that we may give thanks to thy holy name and glory in thy praise 36 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel for ever and ever and all * Deut. 27 25. the people said Amen and praised the LORD 37 ¶ So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD Asaph and his brethren to minister before the ark continually as every days work required 38 And Obed-edom with their brethren threescore and eight Obed-edom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be porters 39 And Zadok the priest and his brethren the priests before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at Gibeon 40 To offer burnt offerings unto the LORD upon the altar of the burnt-offering continually †Heb. in the morning and in the evening morning and evening and to do according to all that is written in the law of the LORD which he commanded Israel 41 And with them Heman and Jeduthun and the rest that were chosen who were expressed by name to give thanks to the LORD because his mercy endureth for ever 42 And with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound and with musical instruments of God and the sons of Jeduthun were †Heb. for the gate porters 43 And all the people departed every man to his house and David returned to bless his house CHAP. XVII 1 Nathan first approving the purpose of David to build God an house 3 after by the word of God forbidâ—eth him 11 He promiseth him blessings and benefits in his seed 16 Davids prayer and thanksgiving NOw * 2 Sam. 7.1 c. it came to pass as David sat in his house that David said to Nathan the prophet Lo I dwell in an house of cedars but the ark of the cevenant of the LORD remaineth under curtains 2 Then Nathan said unto David Do all that is in thine heart for God is with thee 3 ¶ And it came to pass the same night that the word of God came to Nathan saying 4 Go and tell David my servant Thus saith the LORD Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in 5 For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day but †Heb. have been have gone from tent to tent and from one tabernacle to another 6 Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel whom I commanded to feed my people saying Why have ye not built me an house of cedars 7 Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David Thus saith the LORD of hosts I took thee from the sheep-cote even †Heb. from after from following the sheep that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel 8 And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth 9 Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel and will plant them and they shall dwell in their place and shall be moved no more neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more as at the beginning 10 And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel moreover I will subdue all thine enemies Furthermore I tell thee that the LORD will build thee an house 11 ¶ And it shall come to pass when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers that I will raise up thy seed after thee which shall be of thy sons and I will establish his kingdom 12 He shall build me an house and I will stablish his throne for ever 13 * 2 Sam. 7.14 I will be his father and he shall be my son and I will not take my mercy away from him as I took it from him that was before thee 14 But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever and his throne shall be established for evermore 15 According to all these words and according to all this vision so did Nathan speak unto David 16 ¶ And David the king came and sat before the LORD and said Who am I O LORD God and what is mine house that thou hast brought me hitherto 17 And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes O God for thou hast also spoken of thy servants house for a great while to come and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree O LORD God 18 What can David speak more to thee for the honour of thy servant for thou knowest thy servant 19 O LORD for thy servants sake and according to thine own heart hast thou done all this greatness in making known all these †Heb. greatnesses great things 20 O LORD there is none like thee neither is there any God besides thee according to all that we have heard with our ears 21 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel whom God went to redeem to be his own people to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness by driving out nations from before thy people whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt 22 For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever and thou LORD becamest their God 23 Therefore now LORD let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever and do as thou hast said 24 Let it even be established that thy name may be magnified for ever saying The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel even a God to Israel and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee 25 For thou O my God †Heb. hast revealed the ear of thy servant hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray before thee 26 And now LORD thou art God and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant 27 Now therefore ‖ Or it hath plused thee let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant that it may be before thee for ever for thou blessest O LORD and it shall be blessed for ever CHAP. for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish 9 And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia He is come forth to make war with thee and when he heard it he sent messengers to Hezekiah saying 10 Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah saying Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee saying Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria 11 Behold thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly and shalt thou be delivered 12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed as Gozan and Haran and Rezeph and the children of Eden which were in Telassar 13 Where is the king of Hamath and the king of Arphad and the king of the city of Sepharvaim Hena and Ivah 14 ¶ And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD and spread it before the LORD 15 And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD saying 16 O LORD of hosts God of Israel that dwellest between the cherubims thou art the God even thou alone of all the kingdoms of the earth thou hast made heaven and earth 17 Incline thine ear O LORD and hear open thine eyes O LORD and see and hear all the words of Sennacherib which hath sent to reproach the living God 18 Of a truth LORD the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the †Heb. lands nations and their countreys 19 And have †Heb. given cast their gods into the fire for they were no gods but the work of mens hands wood and stone therefore they have destroyed them 20 Now therefore O LORD our God save us from his hand that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD even thou onely 21 ¶ Then Isaiah the son of Amòz sent unto Hezekiah saying Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria 22 This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him The virgin the daughter of Zion hath despised thee and laughed thee to scorn the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee 23 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice and lifted up thine eyes on high even against the holy One of Israel 24 †Heb. By the hand of thy servants By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord and hast said By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains to the sides of Lebanon and I will cut down †Heb. the talness of the cedars thereof and the choice of the fir trees thereof the tall cedars thereof and the choice fir-trees thereof and I will enter into the height of his border and ‖ Or the forest and his fruitful field the forest of his Carmel 25 I have dâ—gged and drunk water and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the ‖ Or fineed and closed besieged places 26 ‖ Or Hast thou not beard how I have made it long ago and formed it of ancient times should I now bring it to be laid waste and defenced cities to be ruinous heaps Hast thou not heard long ago how I have done it and of ancient times that I have formed it now have I brought it to pass that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heaps 27 Therefore their inhabitants were †Heb. short of hand of small power they were dismayed and confounded they were as the grass of the field and as the green herb as the grass on the hous-tops and as corn blasted before it be grown up 28 But I know thy ‖ Or sitting abode and thy going out and thy coming in and thy rage against me 29 Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears therefore will I put my book in thy nose and my bridle in thy lips and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest 30 And this shall be a signe unto thee Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself and the second year that which springeth of the same and in the third year sowe ye and reap and plant vineyards and eat the fruit thereof 31 And †Heb. the escaping of the house of Judah that remaineth the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward 32 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant and †Heb. the escaping they that escape out of mount Zion the * 2 Kin. 19.31 Ch. 9.7 zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this 33 Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria He shall not come into this city nor shoot an arrow there nor come before it with shields nor cast a bank against it 34 By the way that he came by the same shall he return and shall not come into this city saith the LORD 35 For I will * 2 Kin. 20.6 defend this city to save it for mine own sake and for my servant Davids sake 36 Then the * 2 Kin 19.35 angel of the LORD went forth and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred and fourscore and five thousand and when they arose early in the morning behold they were all dead corpses 37 ¶ So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went and returned and dwelt at Nineveh 38 And it came to pass as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword and they escaped into the land of †Heb. Ararat Armenia and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead CHAP. therefore now I declare it unto thee 13 Behold the days will come that there shall rise up a kingdom upon earth and it shall be feared above all the kingdoms that were before it 14 In the same shall twelve kings reign one after another 15 Whereof the second shall begin to reign and shall have more time then any of the twelve 16 And this do the twelve wings signifie which thou sawest 17 As for the voice which thou heardest speak and that thou sawest not to go out from the heads but from the mids of the body thereof this is the interpretation 18 That after the time of that kingdom there shall arise great strivings and it shall stand in peril of falling nevertheless it shall not then fall but shall be restored again to his beginning 19 And whereas thou sawest the eight small under-feathers sticking to her wings this is the interpretation 20 That in him there shall arise eight kings whose time shall be but small and their years swift 21 And two of them shall perish the middle time approaching four shall be kept until their end begin to approach but two shall be kept unto the end 22 And whereas thou sawest three heads resting this is the interpretation 23 In his last days shall the most High raise up three kingdoms and renew many things therein they shall have the dominion of the earth 24 And of those that dwell therein with much oppression above all those that were before them therefore are they called the heads of the eagle 25 For these are they that shall accomplish his wickedness and that shall finish his last end 26 And whereas thou sawest that the great head appeared no more it signifieth that one of them shall die upon his bed and yet with pain 27 For the two that remain shall be slain with the sword 28 For the sword of the one shall devour the other but at the last shall he fall through the sword himself 29 And whereas thou sawest two feathers under the wings passing over the head that is on the right side 30 It signifieth that these are they whom the Highest hath kept unto their end this is the small kingdom and full of trouble as thou sawest 31 And the lion whom thou sawest rising up out of the wood and roaring and speaking to the eagle and rebuking her for her unrighteousness with all the words which thou hast heard 32 This is the anointed which the Highest hath kept for them and for their wickedness unto the end he shall reprove them and shall upbraind them with their cruelty 33 For he shall set them before him alive in judgement and shall rebuke them and correct them 34 For the rest of my people shall he deliver with mercy those that have be in preserved upon my borders and he shall make them joyful until the coming of the day of judgement whereof I have spoken unto thee from the beginning 35 This is the dream that thou sawest and these are the interpretations 36 Thou onely hast been meet to know this secret of the Highest 37 Therefore write all these things that thou hast seen in a book and hide them 38 And teach them to the wise of the people whose hearts thou knowest may comprehend and keep these secrets 39 But wait thou here thy self yet seven days more that it may be shewed thee whatsoever it pleaseth the Highest to declare unto thee And with that he went his way 40 And it came to pass when all the people saw that the seven days were past and I not come again into the city they gathered them all together from the least unto the greatest and came unto me and said 41 What have we offended thee and what evil have we done against thee that thou forsakest us and sittest here in this place 42 For of all the | Oâ— people prophets thou onely art left us as a cluster of the vintage and as a candle in a dark place and as a haven or ship preserved from the tempest 43 Are not the evils which are 6.5 which was one of the seven and abode with him 9 And the same man had four daughters virgins which did prophesie 10 And as we tarried there many days there came down from Judea a certain prophet named Agabus 11 And when he was come unto us he took Pauls girdle and bound his own hands and feet and said Thus saith the holy Ghost So shall the Jews at Jerusalem binde the man that oweth this girdle and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles 12 And when we heard these things both we and they of that place besought him not to go up to Jerusalem 13 Then Paul answered What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart for I am ready not to be bound onely but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus 14 And when he would not be perswaded we ceased saying The will of the Lord be done 15 And after those days we took up our carriages and went up to Jerusalem 16 There went with us also certain of the disciples of Cesarea and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus an old disciple with whom we should lodge 17 And when we were come to Jerusalem the brethren received us gladly 18 And the day following Paul went in with us unto James and all the elders were present 19 And when he had saluted them he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministery 20 And when they heard it they glorified the Lord and â—aid unto him Thou seest brother how many thousands of Jews there are which beleeve and they are all zealous of the law 21 And they are informed of thee that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses saying that they ought not to curcumcise their children neither to walk after the customs 22 What is it therefore the multitude must needs come together for they will hear that thou art come 23 Do therefore this that we say to thee we have four men which have a vow on them 24 Them take and purifie thy self with them and be at charges with them that they may * Num. 6.18 Ch. 18.18 shave their heads and all may know that those things whereof they were informed concerning thee are nothing but that thou thy self also walkest orderly and keepest the law 25 As touching the Gentiles which beleeve * Ch. 15.20 we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing save onely that they keep themselves from things offered to idols and from bloud and from strangled and from fornication 26 Then Paul took the men the next day purifying himself with them entred into the temple * Num. 6.13 to signifie the accomplishment of the days of purification until that an offering should be offered for every one of them 27 And when the seven days were almost ended the Jews which were of Asia when they saw him in the temple stirred up all the people and laid hands on him 28 Crying out Men of Israel help this is the man that teacheth all men every where against the people the law this place further brought Greeks also into the temple and hath polluted this holy place 29 For they had seen before with him in the city Trophimus an Ephelian whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple 30 And all the city was moved and the people ran together and they took Paul drew him out of the temple forthwith the doors were shut 31 And as they went about to kill him tidings came unto the chief captain of the band that all Jerusalem was in an uproar 32 Who immediately took souldiers and centurions and ran down unto them and when they saw the chief captain and the souldiers they left beating of Paul 33 Then the chief captain came near and took him and commanded him to be bound with two chains and demanded who he was and what he had done 34 And some cried one thing some another among the multitude and when he could not know the certainty for the tumult he commanded him to be carried into the castle 35 And when he came upon the stairs so it was that he was born of the souldiers for the violence of the people 36 For the multitude of the people followed after crying Away with him 37 And as Paul was to be led into the castle he said unto the chief captain May I speak unto thee Who said Canst thou speak Greek 38 * Chap. 5.36 Art not thou that Egyptian which before these days madest an uproar and leddest out into the wilderness four thousand men that were murderers 39 But Paul said I am a man which am a Jew of Tarsus a city in Cilicia a citizen of no mean city and I beseech thee suffer me to speak unto the people 40 And when he had given him license Paul stood on the stairs and beckned with the hand unto the people and when there was made a great silence he spake unto them in the Hebrew tongue saying CHAP. XXII 2 Paul declareth at large how he was converted to the faith 17 and called to his apostleship 22 At the very mentioning of the Gentiles the people exclaim on him 24 He should have been scourged 25 but claiming the priviledge of a Roman he escapeth MEn brethren and fathers hear ye my defence which I make now unto you 2 And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them they kept the more silence and he saith 3 * Chap. 21.39 I am verily a man which am a Jew born in Tarsus a city in Cilicia yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers and was zealous towards God as ye all are this day 4 * Chap. 8.3 And I persecuted this way unto the death binding and delivering into prisons both men and women 5 As also the high priest doth hear me witness and all the estate of the elders from whom also I received letters unto the brethren and went to Damascus to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem for to be punished 6 And it came to pass that as I made my journey and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me 7 And I fell unto the ground and heard a voice saying unto me Saul Saul why persecutest thou me 8 And I answered Who art thou Lord And he said unto me I am Jesus of Nazareth whom thou persecutest 9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light and were afraid but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me 10 And I said What shall I do Lord And the Lord said unto me Arise and go into Damascus and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do 11 And when I could not see for the glory of
devil sinneth from the beginning For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin because he is born of God 10 In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil Whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God neither he that loveth not his brother 11 For this is the ‖ Or commandment message that ye heard from the beginning * Joh. 13.34 15.12 that we should love one another 12 Not as * Gen. 4.8 Cain who was of that wicked one and slew his brother And wherefore slew he him Because his own works were evil and his brothers righteous 13 Marvel not my brethren if the world hate you 14 We know that we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren he that loveth not his brother abideth in death 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God because he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren 17 But * Luk. 3.11 whoso hath this worlds good and seeth his brother have need and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him how dwelleth the love of God in him 18 My little children let us not love in word neither in tongue but in deed and in truth 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth and shall †Gr. persâ—â—â—e assure our hearts before him 20 For it our heart condemn us God is greater then our heart and knoweth all things 21 Beloved if our heart condemn us not then have we confidence towards God 22 And * Mat. 21.22 Joh. 15.7 16.23 whatsoever we ask we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight 23 And * Joh. 6.29 and 17.3 this is his commandment that we should beleeve on the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave us commandment 24 And * Joh. 15. â—0 he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him and he in him and hereby we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us CHAP. IV. 1 He warneth them not to beleeve all teachers who boast of the Spirit but to try them by the rules of the catholick faith 7 and by many reasons exhorteth to brotherly love BEloved beleeve not every spirit but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world 2 Hereby know ye the spirit of God Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God and this is that spirit of antichrist whereof you have heard that it should come and even now already is it in the world 4 Ye are of God little children and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you then he that is in the world 5 They are of the world therefore speak they of the world and the world heareth them 6 We are of God * Joh. 8 47. he that knoweth God heareth us he that is not of God heareth not us Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of errour 7 Beloved let us love one another for love is of God and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love 9 * Joh. 3.16 In this was manifested the love of God towards us because that God sent his onely begotten Son into the world that we might live through him 10 Herein is love not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins 11 Beloved if God so loved us we ought also to love one another 12 * 1 Tim. 6.16 No man hath seen God at any time If we love one another God dwelleth in us and his love is perfected in us 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him and he in us because he hath given us of his Spirit 14 And we have seen and do testifie that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God God dwelleth in him and he in God 16 And we have known and beleeved the love that God hath to us God is love and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him 17 Herein is †Gr. love with us our love made perfect that we may have boldness in the day of judgement because as he is so are we in this world 18 There is no fear in love but perfect love casteth out fear because fear hath torment he that feareth is not made perfect in love 19 We love him because he first loved us 20 If a man say I love God and hateth his brother he is a liar for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen how can he love God whom he hath not seen 21 And * Joh. 13.34 15.12 this commandment have we from him that he who loveth God love his brother also CHAP. V. He that loveth God loveth his children and keepeth his commandments 3 which to the faithful are light and not grievous 9 Jesus is the Son of God able to save us 14 and to bear our prayers which we make for our selves and for others WHosoever beleeveth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him 2 By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his commandments 3 For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and * Mat. 11.30 his commandments are not grievous 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith 5 Who is he that overcometh the world but he that beleeveth that Jesus is the Son of God 6 This is he that came by water and bloud even Jesus Christ not by water onely but by water and bloud and it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the holy Ghost and these three are one 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth the spirit and the water and the bloud and these three agree in one 9 If we receive the witness of men the witness of God is greater for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son 10 He that beleeveth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself he that beleeveth
