danger_n there_o speak_v of_o shall_v ever_o separate_v i_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n no_o nor_o great_a than_o they_o nor_o the_o instrument_n of_o they_o nor_o abettor_n nor_o author_n of_o they_o shall_v ever_o do_v it_o be_v it_o life_n be_v it_o death_n be_v it_o angel_n or_o principality_n or_o power_n etc._n etc._n not_o any_o of_o all_o these_o shall_v be_v ever_o able_a to_o now_o concern_v this_o seven_o and_o last_o point_n here_o be_v two_o thing_n to_o be_v consider_v first_o we_o be_v here_o to_o consider_v of_o the_o danger_n that_o the_o child_n of_o god_n be_v subject_a unto_o second_o of_o the_o support_n and_o comfort_n they_o have_v against_o these_o danger_n and_o both_o these_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v of_o god_n will_v first_o in_o general_n then_o in_o particular_a first_o we_o will_v speak_v of_o the_o danger_n and_o that_o in_o general_a that_o god_n child_n be_v subject_a to_o and_o then_o we_o will_v come_v to_o the_o support_n they_o have_v in_o they_o for_o first_o we_o must_v know_v what_o the_o danger_n be_v before_o we_o can_v know_v the_o support_n and_o help_v we_o have_v in_o they_o we_o must_v first_o know_v the_o disease_n before_o we_o can_v know_v the_o remedy_n and_o concern_v the_o danger_n in_o general_a take_v notice_n of_o these_o four_o thing_n first_o the_o variety_n of_o they_o they_o be_v not_o one_o but_o many_o of_o diverse_a kind_n some_o danger_n of_o life_n some_o of_o death_n danger_n wrought_v by_o diverse_a mean_n and_o instrument_n some_o by_o angel_n some_o by_o principality_n and_o power_n danger_n at_o diverse_a time_n some_o present_a some_o to_o come_v danger_n from_o diverse_a place_n some_o from_o the_o height_n above_o some_o from_o the_o deph_n beneath_o here_o be_v the_o variety_n of_o they_o for_o the_o apostle_n speak_v not_o idle_o in_o any_o of_o these_o word_n second_o we_o must_v take_v notice_n of_o the_o completeness_n and_o fullness_n of_o these_o danger_n they_o be_v not_o only_o many_o and_o diverse_a but_o even_o all_o the_o danger_n that_o may_v be_v for_o here_o be_v a_o sufficient_a and_o perfect_a reckon_n up_o of_o all_o sort_n of_o danger_n to_o the_o full_a there_o be_v not_o one_o danger_n that_o can_v ever_o be_v name_v or_o imagine_v but_o it_o may_v fit_o be_v reduce_v to_o one_o of_o these_o head_n that_o the_o apostle_n here_o name_n either_o to_o life_n or_o to_o death_n or_o to_o angel_n etc._n etc._n and_o that_o the_o apostle_n may_v be_v sure_a to_o comprehend_v all_o danger_n he_o do_v not_o only_a name_n actual_a danger_n such_o as_o do_v ordinary_o befall_v we_o both_o of_o life_n &_o death_n but_o possible_a danger_n to_o come_v as_o well_o as_o present_v nay_o such_o danger_n as_o in_o our_o ordinary_a apprehension_n be_v impossible_a from_o good_a angel_n which_o be_v hard_o to_o be_v conceive_v how_o that_o may_v be_v three_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v the_o crossenes_n &_o thwartnes_n of_o these_o danger_n propound_v here_o in_o opposition_n one_o to_o another_o and_o also_o in_o opposition_n each_o of_o they_o to_o our_o own_o state_n and_o mind_n the_o apostle_n make_v our_o case_n herein_o to_o be_v like_a unto_o judahs_n isa_n 9.21_o manasses_n against_o ephraim_n and_o ephraim_n against_o manasses_n and_o both_o of_o they_o against_o judah_n so_o it_o be_v with_o god_n child_n in_o their_o trial_n here_o be_v death_n oppose_v to_o life_n and_o life_n oppose_v to_o death_n and_o both_o opposite_a to_o god_n child_n so_o here_o be_v good_a angel_n oppose_v to_o bad_a and_o bad_a angel_n oppose_v to_o good_a thing_n present_v oppose_v to_o thing_n to_o come_v and_o thing_n to_o come_v oppose_v to_o thing_n present_a height_n oppose_v to_o depth_n &_o depth_n to_o height_n &_o god_n child_n subject_a to_o all_o these_o and_o this_o be_v the_o sting_n of_o our_o cross_n that_o we_o be_v thus_o cross_v &_o thwart_v in_o our_o affliction_n as_o when_o we_o be_v pinch_v with_o pain_n on_o the_o right_a hand_n we_o turn_v to_o the_o left_a to_o find_v ease_n &_o present_o on_o the_o left_a hand_n we_o be_v pinch_v as_o much_o as_o before_o on_o the_o right_n yet_o such_o be_v the_o present_a portion_n of_o god_n child_n the_o 4_o &_o last_o point_n be_v that_o the_o apostle_n propound_v these_o danger_n to_o himself_o &_o to_o the_o faithful_a not_o as_o fear_n or_o shadow_n or_o imagination_n i_o fight_v not_o as_o one_o that_o beat_v the_o air_n say_v the_o apostle_n but_o as_o true_a &_o real_a danger_n such_o as_o he_o do_v acknowledge_v himself_o &_o all_o the_o faithful_a expose_v unto_o &_o look_v to_o be_v encounter_v first_o or_o last_o with_o such_o thing_n indeed_o the_o doctrine_n that_o flow_v natural_o from_o this_o scripture_n thus_o open_v be_v this_o doctrine_n doctrine_n that_o god_n child_n must_v make_v their_o account_n and_o set_v down_o their_o rest_n upon_o it_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v assault_v here_o in_o this_o world_n with_o all_o trial_n and_o danger_n and_o distress_n that_o ever_o possible_o can_v befall_v they_o this_o doctrine_n be_v easy_a enough_o to_o be_v understand_v for_o god_n child_n see_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o daily_o in_o other_o and_o feel_v it_o in_o their_o own_o self_n but_o it_o be_v hardly_o digest_v it_o be_v a_o hard_a say_n who_o can_v bear_v it_o therefore_o that_o we_o may_v the_o better_o brook_v it_o affliction_n four_o preparation_n for_o the_o brook_v of_o affliction_n let_v we_o receive_v it_o upon_o these_o preparation_n first_o we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o all_o these_o danger_n shall_v be_v heap_v upon_o every_o one_o of_o god_n child_n in_o several_a but_o they_o shall_v be_v distribute_v and_o part_v among_o they_o all_o in_o common_a all_o the_o affliction_n of_o the_o faithful_a be_v but_o one_o cup_n and_o that_o christ_n call_v his_o cup_n matth._n 20.23_o you_o shall_v drink_v indeed_o of_o my_o cup_n it_o be_v christ_n cup_n and_o all_o the_o faithful_a must_v drink_v of_o it_o you_o shall_v drink_v say_v our_o saviour_n every_o one_o must_v have_v his_o share_n and_o so_o among_o they_o they_o must_v drink_v it_o all_o up_o now_o because_o none_o of_o we_o know_v whether_o he_o shall_v drink_v of_o the_o top_n of_o this_o cup_n or_o of_o the_o middle_n or_o of_o the_o bottom_n till_o his_o turn_n come_v therefore_o every_o one_o of_o we_o must_v arm_v himself_o to_o drink_v of_o any_o part_n of_o it_o every_o one_o be_v to_o make_v account_n that_o he_o be_v liable_a to_o every_o affliction_n the_o second_o preparation_n be_v this_o we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o these_o affliction_n shall_v befall_v all_o god_n child_n alike_o no_o some_o must_v drink_v deep_a of_o it_o than_o other_o god_n have_v
apprehension_n of_o sin_n will_v infect_v we_o satan_n be_v so_o strong_a and_o subtle_a we_o be_v so_o weak_a and_o simple_a that_o if_o ever_o he_o get_v we_o into_o any_o contemplation_n of_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v sin_n though_o it_o be_v not_o with_o any_o intent_n to_o commit_v it_o nay_o though_o it_o be_v with_o a_o contrary_a intent_n even_o to_o hate_v it_o and_o prevent_v it_o yet_o usual_o he_o will_v infect_v we_o with_o it_o before_o we_o be_v aware_a so_o that_o it_o will_v leave_v a_o stain_n behind_o therefore_o take_v heed_n of_o any_o speculation_n or_o proposition_n of_o future_a sin_n for_o that_o be_v not_o the_o way_n to_o escape_v they_o but_o rather_o to_o be_v entangle_v with_o they_o special_o meditate_v not_o on_o the_o material_n of_o sin_n for_o that_o be_v exceed_o dangerous_a we_o may_v consider_v how_o hateful_a it_o be_v to_o god_n and_o how_o hurtful_a to_o our_o own_o soul_n but_o we_o must_v not_o meddle_v with_o the_o material_n of_o sin_n the_o second_o question_n be_v how_o it_o can_v stand_v with_o the_o disposition_n of_o distress_a believer_n that_o they_o shall_v insult_v and_o triumph_v over_o their_o affliction_n alas_o may_n some_o say_v god_n child_n be_v humble_v and_o mourn_v and_o sigh_v and_o groan_n under_o the_o burden_n and_o yet_o do_v they_o insult_v and_o rejoice_v over_o they_o yes_o they_o do_v their_o mourning_n and_o insultation_n may_v stand_v well_o together_o they_o mourn_v for_o their_o present_a pain_n &_o grief_n but_o they_o insult_v over_o they_o in_o the_o assurance_n of_o victory_n and_o of_o the_o good_a they_o shall_v have_v by_o they_o they_o mourn_v for_o their_o sin_n that_o bring_v their_o affliction_n on_o they_o but_o they_o rejoice_v because_o they_o know_v that_o by_o god_n hand_n these_o affliction_n shall_v be_v make_v a_o mean_n to_o cure_v those_o very_a sin_n that_o have_v procure_v they_o they_o mourn_v for_o the_o perish_v of_o the_o outward_a man_n by_o they_o but_o they_o insult_v that_o thereby_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v renew_v daily_o in_o a_o word_n they_o mourn_v in_o themselves_o but_o they_o rejoice_v in_o god_n carnal_a insultation_n do_v not_o befit_v god_n child_n this_o be_v a_o holy_a insultation_n and_o it_o become_v they_o well_o they_o insult_v not_o first_o in_o respect_n of_o their_o own_o strength_n such_o rejoice_v be_v not_o good_a but_o mere_o and_o only_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o god_n and_o second_o not_o so_o much_o for_o their_o own_o good_a and_o safety_n but_o much_o more_o for_o the_o honour_n and_o glory_n that_o god_n shall_v have_v by_o their_o affliction_n and_o by_o their_o deliverance_n and_o this_o be_v a_o holy_a and_o good_a insultation_n and_o this_o be_v the_o godly_a and_o christian_a insultation_n of_o strong_a believer_n against_o all_o danger_n for_o that_o be_v the_o reach_n of_o the_o text_n strong_a believer_n may_v do_v it_o weak_a believer_n may_v do_v so_o too_o but_o not_o with_o that_o sense_n as_o the_o other_o may_v christ_n jesus_n be_v so_o weak_a that_o he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o bear_v his_o cross_n yet_o when_o he_o be_v nail_v on_o that_o cross_n he_o do_v then_o open_o triumph_v over_o all_o his_o enemy_n now_o come_v we_o to_o the_o proof_n of_o the_o observation_n thus_o clear_v and_o first_o we_o will_v prove_v it_o in_o the_o state_n of_o the_o faithful_a second_o you_o shall_v see_v it_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o faithful_a and_o three_o you_o shall_v see_v it_o in_o the_o warrant_n that_o god_n child_n have_v for_o it_o first_o see_v it_o prove_v from_o the_o state_n of_o the_o faithful_a psal_n 112.7.8_o he_o will_v not_o be_v afraid_a of_o evil_a tiding_n and_o why_o for_o his_o heart_n be_v fix_v and_o believe_v in_o the_o lord_n and_o for_o the_o more_o certainty_n he_o double_v upon_o it_o in_o the_o 8._o verse_n his_o heart_n be_v establish_v therefore_o he_o will_v not_o fear_v etc._n etc._n who_o be_v it_o that_o the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o here_o of_o a_o true_a believer_n that_o be_v of_o he_o that_o believe_v in_o the_o lord_n and_o rest_v himself_o secure_o upon_o the_o lord_n for_o protection_n and_o what_o be_v the_o effect_n that_o his_o faith_n shall_v work_v in_o he_o strong_a assurance_n and_o comfort_n it_o confirm_v and_o fix_v his_o heart_n and_o what_o then_o he_o shall_v not_o be_v afraid_a of_o evil_a tiding_n again_o in_o the_o 8._o verse_n his_o heart_n be_v establish_v how_o far_o even_o to_o the_o see_v of_o his_o desire_n upon_o his_o enemy_n to_o the_o subdue_a and_o triumph_v over_o and_o the_o set_n of_o his_o foot_n on_o the_o neck_n of_o they_o see_v it_o also_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o faithful_a how_o they_o propound_v and_o hearten_v themselves_o against_o all_o danger_n that_o may_v befall_v they_o it_o be_v the_o practice_n of_o all_o the_o faithful_a as_o well_o as_o of_o paul_n and_o some_o other_o it_o be_v the_o practice_n of_o the_o whole_a church_n psal_n 46.1.2.3_o god_n be_v our_o hope_n and_o strength_n and_o help_v in_o trouble_n ready_a to_o be_v find_v first_o the_o church_n there_o lay_v down_o this_o holy_a assurance_n for_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o comfort_n and_o this_o be_v a_o sure_a ground_n that_o god_n be_v our_o hope_n and_o help_v in_o trouble_n etc._n etc._n and_o then_o second_o they_o propound_v to_o themselves_o danger_n that_o may_v befall_v they_o and_o strange_a and_o fearful_a one_o too_o the_o moon_n of_o the_o earth_n the_o fall_n of_o the_o mountain_n into_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o sea_n the_o rage_a of_o the_o water_n in_o the_o 2._o and_o 3._o verse_n such_o danger_n as_o do_v not_o come_v to_o pass_v in_o their_o time_n but_o if_o they_o do_v what_o then_o why_o then_o last_o they_o gather_v to_o themselves_o out_o of_o this_o assurance_n matter_n of_o consolation_n against_o all_o these_o danger_n verse_n 2_o as_o who_o shall_v say_v let_v they_o roar_v when_o they_o communion_n with_o christ_n to_o communicate_v with_o he_o both_o in_o his_o death_n and_o in_o his_o resurrection_n and_o both_o these_o have_v we_o by_o his_o spirit_n but_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o find_v these_o thing_n in_o thou_o certain_o as_o yet_o thou_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a case_n the_o second_o sort_n of_o use_v for_o those_o that_o have_v attain_v this_o favour_n at_o god_n hand_n only_o 4._o use_v to_o the_o faithful_a only_o to_o enjoy_v this_o bless_a communion_n be_v these_o first_o we_o that_o have_v find_v this_o shall_v carry_v ourselves_o worthy_a of_o it_o have_v god_n &_o give_v themselves_o over_o to_o their_o own_o lust_n graceless_a and_o reckless_a person_n they_o be_v to_o abuse_v such_o a_o heavenly_a doctrine_n what_o be_v this_o but_o to_o turn_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n into_o wantonness_n jude_n 4_o and_o mark_v what_o censure_n the_o apostle_n pass_v on_o they_o in_o that_o place_n ungodly_a man_n they_o be_v ordain_v to_o condemnation_n a_o child_n that_o have_v a_o good_a father_n who_o he_o know_v will_v not_o see_v he_o want_v nor_o perish_v shall_v this_o child_n therefore_o waste_v and_o riot_n and_o bezzell_v away_o all_o his_o all_o affliction_n if_o not_o we_o will_v never_o stand_v to_o the_o trial_n second_o consider_v satan_n policy_n when_o he_o can_v draw_v we_o away_o from_o seek_v sound_a assurance_n than_o he_o will_v put_v a_o trick_n upon_o we_o &_o he_o will_v labour_v to_o make_v we_o believe_v we_o have_v it_o when_o indeed_o we_o have_v it_o not_o and_o therefore_o let_v we_o see_v that_o it_o be_v true_a and_o sound_a and_o let_v we_o take_v heed_n we_o mistake_v not_o the_o devil_n assurance_n for_o god_n a_o shameful_a mistake_n yea_o but_o how_o shall_v i_o know_v that_o my_o assurance_n be_v sound_a and_o true_a or_o no_o sound_a 4._o way_n how_o a_o man_n may_v know_v whether_o his_o assurance_n be_v true_a and_o sound_a i_o answer_v thou_o shall_v discern_v it_o clear_o by_o these_o four_o observation_n first_o by_o the_o cause_n of_o our_o assurance_n second_o by_o the_o rise_n of_o it_o three_o by_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o and_o fourthly_a by_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o first_o by_o the_o cause_n of_o our_o assurance_n how_o it_o be_v wrought_v in_o thou_o be_v it_o wrought_v by_o the_o word_n and_o by_o the_o spirit_n have_v god_n make_v thou_o well_o acquaint_v with_o his_o promise_n reveal_v in_o his_o word_n that_o he_o will_v never_o fail_v thou_o nor_o forsake_v thou_o do_v thou_o find_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n to_o incline_v thy_o heart_n to_o remember_v they_o and_o to_o believe_v they_o to_o rest_v upon_o they_o and_o to_o apply_v they_o to_o thy_o own_o heart_n as_o the_o undoubted_a truth_n of_o god_n and_o that_o heaven_n and_o earth_n shall_v fail_v but_o not_o one_o tittle_n of_o they_o shall_v fail_v do_v thou_o find_v that_o thou_o have_v thy_o part_n in_o they_o and_o that_o they_o do_v belong_v to_o thou_o be_v in_o christ_n as_o well_o as_o to_o any_o believer_n if_o it_o be_v so_o with_o thou_o than_o thy_o assurance_n be_v sound_a and_o good_a else_o it_o be_v not_o sound_a except_o it_o arise_v from_o this_o cause_n for_o god_n word_n be_v the_o word_n of_o truth_n his_o spirit_n be_v the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n and_o they_o teach_v and_o work_v no_o lie_n but_o look_v whatsoever_o grace_n they_o teach_v and_o work_v the_o same_o be_v a_o true_a grace_n without_o exception_n therefore_o if_o thy_o assurance_n arise_v from_o these_o it_o be_v sound_a and_o good_a psal_n 119.49_o remember_v thy_o promise_n make_v to_o thy_o servant_n wherein_o thou_o have_v cause_v i_o to_o trust_v when_o the_o lord_n acquaint_v we_o with_o his_o word_n and_o promise_n and_o cause_v we_o by_o his_o spirit_n to_o put_v our_o trust_n in_o they_o this_o be_v a_o sound_n and_o true_a assurance_n that_o shall_v stand_v in_o remembrance_n before_o god_n for_o ever_o the_o contrary_a counterfeit_a assurance_n and_o vain_a presumption_n be_v fetch_v and_o do_v arise_v from_o other_o cause_n as_o maintenance_n welfare_n in_o outward_a thing_n self-love_n satan_n flattery_n soothe_n up_o of_o man_n and_o such_o like_a but_o this_o be_v presumption_n and_o never_o come_v from_o the_o word_n and_o spirit_n a_o hypocrite_n may_v say_v he_o do_v apply_v the_o promise_n of_o god_n to_o himself_o and_o that_o his_o assurance_n arise_v from_o thence_o and_o may_v have_v some_o place_n of_o scripture_n run_v in_o his_o head_n sometime_o tend_v to_o that_o effect_n yet_o indeed_o he_o mis-understands_a the_o word_n and_o mis-applyes_a the_o promise_n and_o they_o be_v not_o second_v by_o god_n spirit_n in_o their_o heart_n cause_v they_o to_o put_v their_o trust_n in_o the_o promise_n second_o look_v into_o the_o rise_n of_o our_o assurance_n and_o what_o be_v that_o it_o be_v when_o our_o assurance_n be_v get_v and_o do_v arise_v upon_o and_o after_o hearty_a and_o unfeigned_a repentance_n for_o sin_n
