stumble_v and_o fall_v and_o perish_v for_o ever_o there_o be_v a_o woe_n to_o they_o that_o take_v scandal_n all_o profane_a one_o that_o will_v stumble_v at_o religion_n and_o reproach_n professor_n and_o profession_n because_o of_o scandal_n there_o be_v a_o woe_n to_o they_o and_o what_o woe_n even_o this_o that_o those_o scandal_n be_v as_o so_o many_o stone_n tumble_v in_o the_o way_n to_o make_v they_o break_v their_o neck_n in_o the_o pit_n of_o everlasting_a perdition_n and_o therefore_o thus_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o usual_o where_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n have_v then_o you_o find_v in_o you_o a_o death_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o life_n of_o righteousness_n know_v that_o christ_n be_v in_o you_o when_o as_o the_o scripture_n and_o minister_n from_o the_o scripture_n do_v open_a to_o you_o clear_a sign_n and_o certain_a evidence_n of_o the_o goodness_n and_o truth_n of_o your_o estate_n if_o you_o put_v away_o comfort_n then_o you_o put_v away_o comfort_n when_o god_n speak_v to_o you_o you_o refuse_v to_o be_v comfort_v when_o the_o lord_n will_v comfort_v you_o you_o give_v the_o lie_n to_o god_n and_o to_o his_o word_n therefore_o take_v heed_n what_o you_o do_v if_o by_o these_o sign_n or_o any_o such_o which_o be_v clear_a and_o evident_a ground_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n you_o find_v your_o estate_n to_o be_v good_a know_v certain_a company_n of_o widow_n that_o be_v ever_o learning_n certain_o than_o you_o will_v think_v that_o they_o be_v good_a scholar_n no_o that_o they_o be_v not_o what_o be_v the_o cause_n what_o always_o learning_n up_o early_o and_o down_o late_o and_o yet_o never_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n what_o be_v the_o cause_n the_o apostle_n tell_v you_o in_o the_o sixth_o harbour_v some_o bosom_n lust_n in_o their_o soul_n they_o have_v a_o form_n of_o godliness_n but_o they_o take_v not_o up_o the_o power_n of_o religion_n because_o it_o will_v remove_v and_o dis-place_n those_o lust_n that_o they_o love_v so_o well_o i_o beseech_v you_o observe_v that_o place_n isa_n 6.9_o 10._o when_o the_o lord_n have_v a_o purpose_n to_o overthrow_v the_o people_n but_o the_o main_a ground_n of_o his_o contempt_n lie_v here_o he_o must_v have_v his_o sin_n he_o will_v take_v his_o liberty_n he_o will_v enjoy_v himself_o what_o ever_o be_v say_v to_o the_o god_n and_o according_o apply_v the_o touchstone_n of_o the_o scripture_n i_o be_o confident_a by_o the_o sign_n and_o evidence_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v in_o the_o scripture_n people_n may_v come_v to_o discern_v their_o own_o heart_n not_o by_o any_o virtue_n or_o skill_n of_o their_o own_o but_o by_o the_o virtue_n and_o skill_n of_o god_n who_o power_n go_v along_o with_o his_o word_n it_o be_v true_a a_o hypocrite_n may_v deceive_v the_o quickest-eyed_n minister_n in_o the_o world_n if_o he_o will_v not_o open_o lay_v his_o heart_n before_o he_o and_o therefore_o good_a minister_n oftentimes_o speak_v peace_n to_o they_o to_o who_o no_o peace_n belong_v yet_o they_o speak_v the_o truth_n according_a to_o those_o evidence_n that_o be_v express_v to_o they_o be_v not_o the_o wise_a virgin_n deceive_v in_o the_o foolish_a be_v not_o david_n deceive_v in_o achitophel_n be_v not_o the_o disciple_n deceive_v in_o judas_n yet_o notwithstanding_o as_o i_o say_v if_o people_n will_v sincere_o deal_v with_o their_o fellow_n brethren_n and_o with_o their_o minister_n and_o when_o god_n call_v upon_o they_o to_o try_v themselves_o if_o they_o will_v turn_v their_o inside_n terror_n to_o those_o that_o want_v they_o i_o know_v you_o be_v almost_o all_o frequenter_n of_o the_o word_n speaker_n well_o of_o the_o practice_n of_o religion_n happy_o you_o have_v some_o reformation_n in_o you_o happy_o you_o have_v some_o minister_n that_o speak_v peace_n to_o you_o happy_o there_o be_v no_o disturbance_n in_o your_o conscience_n happy_o there_o be_v some_o kind_n of_o joy_n and_o rejoice_v in_o you_o in_o hear_v the_o word_n etc._n etc._n but_o my_o brethren_n whatever_o there_o be_v that_o can_v be_v in_o you_o if_o this_o be_v not_o in_o you_o if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o death_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o life_n of_o righteousness_n be_v it_o know_v unto_o you_o that_o christ_n be_v not_o in_o you_o neither_o be_v you_o in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n you_o life_n of_o righteousness_n though_o there_o be_v much_o corruption_n though_o there_o be_v much_o weakness_n of_o grace_n in_o you_o yet_o here_o be_v comfort_n for_o you_o and_o terror_n for_o all_o other_o whatever_o their_o moral_a virtue_n and_o common_a grace_n or_o their_o restrain_v gift_n or_o outward_a profession_n be_v well_o then_o what_o now_o remain_v but_o that_o in_o the_o last_o be_v thy_o case_n whoever_o thou_o be_v that_o be_v a_o believer_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o do_v not_o make_v melody_n in_o thy_o heart_n and_o triumph_v over_o thy_o enemy_n what_o have_v the_o redeem_v of_o the_o lord_n to_o do_v but_o to_o praise_v the_o lord_n what_o have_v the_o member_n of_o christ_n to_o do_v but_o to_o rejoice_v in_o christ_n do_v you_o think_v when_o the_o lord_n grace_n sure_o there_o be_v ground_n enough_o for_o your_o rejoice_v notwithstanding_o all_o your_o fail_n consider_v therefore_o then_o my_o brethren_n i_o beseech_v you_o do_v not_o you_o receive_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a do_v not_o you_o slight_v as_o it_o be_v and_o not_o make_v use_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o thus_o administer_v matter_n of_o rejoice_v in_o all_o people_n of_o god_n be_v mourner_n in_o zion_n yet_o what_o kind_n of_o mourning_n there_o be_v a_o double_a sorrow_n a_o godly_a sorrow_n and_o a_o worldly_a sorrow_n a_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v this_o when_o as_o a_o soul_n melt_v into_o tear_n upon_o the_o consideration_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o want_n because_o he_o believe_v that_o god_n through_o christ_n will_v accept_v he_o notwithstanding_o they_o all_o this_o sorrow_n the_o more_o of_o it_o the_o better_a this_o sorrow_n mellow_v the_o heart_n soften_v the_o heart_n make_v it_o frameable_a to_o the_o impression_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o now_o the_o other_o sorrow_n which_o be_v a_o worldly_a sorrow_n when_o as_o a_o soul_n be_v beat_v out_o of_o heart_n because_o of_o sin_n former_o commit_v because_o of_o mighty_a corruption_n that_o do_v annoy_v he_o to_o mourn_v without_o hope_n and_o confidence_n of_o acceptance_n this_o be_v worldly_a sorrow_n and_o cause_v death_n this_o be_v altogether_o unbeseeming_a christian_n receive_v now_o this_o sharp_a reprehension_n and_o be_v humble_v for_o it_o and_o labour_n to_o remember_v your_o condition_n you_o be_v not_o come_v to_o mount_v sinai_n but_o to_o mount_v zion_n you_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n therefore_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n always_o and_o be_v so_o cheerful_a that_o the_o world_n may_v see_v that_o the_o service_n of_o christ_n be_v a_o sweet_a service_n here_o be_v the_o second_o use_n the_o three_o be_v for_o instruction_n to_o they_o that_o be_v not_o in_o christ_n to_o such_o of_o you_o as_o remain_v yet_o in_o your_o natural_a estate_n the_o condition_n of_o they_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n be_v this_o they_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n thy_o condition_n who_o be_v not_o yet_o in_o christ_n be_v just_a the_o contrary_a thou_o be_v not_o under_o grace_n but_o under_o the_o law_n there_o be_v none_o that_o do_v more_o assume_v to_o themselves_o the_o privilege_n of_o grace_n than_o they_o that_o be_v not_o under_o grace_n you_o shall_v have_v your_o profane_a wretch_n your_o paint_a civilian_n your_o formal_a hypocrite_n man_n that_o be_v dead_a in_o trespass_n and_o sin_n that_o be_v servant_n to_o sin_n while_o with_o full_a consent_n they_o obey_v sin_n in_o the_o lust_n thereof_o yet_o you_o shall_v have_v these_o challenge_n to_o themselves_o the_o privilege_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n you_o shall_v have_v one_o swear_v a_o oath_n and_o when_o he_o have_v do_v say_v god_n forgive_v i_o you_o shall_v have_v another_o you_o as_o have_v no_o evidence_n that_o you_o be_v translate_v out_o of_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n and_o ingraft_v into_o christ_n by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n that_o you_o be_v not_o under_o grace_n but_o under_o the_o law_n what_o be_v that_o you_o be_v in_o such_o a_o condition_n wherein_o nothing_o but_o perfect_a obedience_n shall_v stand_v you_o in_o stead_n if_o you_o pray_v as_o well_o as_o you_o can_v yet_o if_o you_o do_v not_o pray_v as_o perfect_o as_o god_n command_v in_o the_o law_n you_o shall_v never_o be_v hear_v if_o you_o keep_v all_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n imperfect_a
temper_n he_o shall_v find_v this_o that_o i_o say_v to_o be_v too_o too_o true_a what_o be_v the_o reason_n else_o you_o will_v not_o suffer_v a_o good_a minister_n to_o follow_v you_o home_o to_o search_v your_o soul_n but_o take_v pet_n at_o such_o a_o man_n present_o what_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o this_o sure_o your_o way_n be_v naught_o your_o mind_n be_v blind_v your_o heart_n be_v harden_v under_o the_o mean_n man_n be_v loath_a to_o let_v other_o see_v what_o they_o be_v because_o they_o be_v not_o as_o they_o shall_v be_v they_o be_v like_o dull-headed_n scholar_n to_o who_o it_o be_v death_n to_o be_v pose_v but_o i_o say_v observe_v therefore_o the_o marvelous_a deadness_n and_o weakness_n the_o strange_a besotted_a dulness_n of_o our_o nature_n to_o good_a that_o when_o we_o have_v all_o the_o encouragement_n and_o mean_n that_o may_v be_v yet_o we_o get_v no_o benefit_n we_o reap_v no_o profit_n by_o they_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v have_v a_o tree_n in_o his_o garden_n that_o all_o the_o dung_v and_o prune_v and_o dress_v that_o he_o can_v use_v will_v do_v no_o good_a of_o nor_o make_v it_o bring_v forth_o any_o fruit_n certain_o he_o will_v think_v that_o tree_n to_o be_v of_o a_o strange_a temper_n so_o here_o let_v we_o see_v and_o wonder_v when_o we_o see_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v bestow_v so_o much_o cost_v upon_o we_o make_v his_o judgement_n come_v home_o even_o to_o our_o very_a door_n pour_v his_o mercy_n on_o we_o in_o abundance_n yet_o we_o be_v not_o provoke_v nor_o quicken_v nor_o enlarge_v in_o the_o way_n of_o life_n that_o though_o wind_n and_o tide_n be_v both_o with_o we_o yet_o we_o make_v no_o progress_n in_o goodness_n but_o he_o that_o be_v ignorant_a be_v ignorant_a still_o and_o he_o that_o be_v filthy_a be_v filthy_a still_o that_o we_o may_v therefore_o shame_v ourselves_o humble_a our_o soul_n and_o bemoan_v our_o estate_n before_o the_o lord_n consider_v i_o pray_v you_o but_o these_o two_o thing_n the_o variety_n of_o help_n that_o god_n vouchsafe_v we_o and_o the_o success_n those_o help_n find_v in_o our_o heart_n when_o all_o the_o fire_n in_o the_o town_n can_v warm_v a_o man_n how_o cold_a be_v he_o when_o all_o the_o persuasion_n under_o heaven_n can_v work_v upon_o a_o man_n oh_o how_o flinty_a be_v he_o how_o gracious_o my_o brethren_n have_v the_o lord_n deal_v with_o you_o that_o live_v in_o this_o place_n how_o many_o help_n have_v he_o put_v into_o your_o hand_n you_o have_v prayer_n and_o sermon_n and_o exhortation_n and_o instruction_n and_o admonition_n and_o comfort_n fort_n and_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v available_a to_o bring_v a_o man_n to_o life_n and_o happiness_n now_o he_o that_o grow_v not_o under_o this_o mean_n he_o that_o thrive_v not_o with_o this_o food_n he_o that_o be_v not_o heat_v by_o this_o fire_n he_o that_o be_v not_o quicken_v by_o this_o dew_n of_o heaven_n let_v he_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o strange_a distemper_n of_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o the_o deadness_n of_o his_o spirit_n i_o know_v not_o what_o to_o say_v to_o you_o certain_o have_v the_o devil_n himself_o but_o any_o hope_n of_o receive_v mercy_n the_o sermon_n that_o be_v make_v in_o this_o city_n be_v able_a even_o to_o melt_v his_o heart_n as_o it_o be_v and_o to_o bring_v he_o to_o consider_v and_o repent_v of_o the_o sin_n he_o have_v commit_v against_o almighty_a god_n but_o because_o he_o have_v no_o hope_n of_o mercy_n he_o remain_v in_o a_o forlorn_a and_o desperate_a condition_n yet_o the_o apostle_n say_v jam._n 2.19_o the_o devil_n also_o believe_v and_o tremble_v that_o be_v they_o know_v all_o thing_n contain_v in_o god_n word_n be_v true_a they_o believe_v they_o and_o assent_v to_o they_o and_o be_v persuade_v that_o god_n will_v one_o day_n make_v all_o his_o threaten_n good_a upon_o they_o and_o upon_o the_o heart_n of_o all_o the_o damn_a for_o ever_o and_o that_o they_o together_o shall_v be_v whole_o deprive_v of_o all_o those_o mercy_n that_o god_n have_v propound_v in_o his_o word_n and_o they_o tremble_v at_o it_o look_v now_o into_o your_o own_o heart_n and_o see_v what_o kind_n of_o temper_n they_o be_v of_o when_o notwithstanding_o the_o many_o judgement_n that_o have_v be_v threaten_v the_o many_o woe_n that_o have_v be_v denounce_v yet_o most_o either_o turn_v their_o back_n upon_o the_o church_n or_o turn_v a_o deaf_a ear_n to_o what_o they_o hear_v and_o cast_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n behind_o they_o and_o rather_o fleer_v in_o the_o face_n of_o the_o minister_n and_o contemn_v what_o he_o say_v then_o be_v any_o way_n humble_v for_o their_o sin_n or_o tremble_v at_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o threaten_n denounce_v out_o of_o it_o my_o brethren_n think_v of_o it_o for_o the_o lord_n sake_n reason_n a_o little_a with_o yourselves_o and_o consider_v and_o say_v lord_n what_o a_o wicked_a heart_n and_o what_o a_o wretched_a disposition_n have_v i_o the_o sea_n be_v trouble_v the_o mountain_n quake_v and_o the_o earth_n sink_v when_o the_o lord_n speak_v and_o utter_v his_o voice_n nay_o the_o devil_n believe_v and_o tremble_v but_o oh_o what_o terror_n and_o woe_n have_v i_o hear_v out_o of_o the_o word_n against_o my_o pride_n my_o covetousness_n my_o swear_n my_o drunkenness_n my_o profane_v of_o the_o sabbath_n yet_o none_o of_o they_o stir_v i_o one_o jot_n i_o have_v have_v the_o fire_n full_a in_o my_o face_n yet_o remain_v as_o icy_a and_o cold_a and_o freeze_v as_o ever_o i_o have_v have_v many_o a_o heavenly_a dew_n upon_o i_o many_o a_o silver_n drop_n yet_o continue_v a_o dry_a and_o barren_a wilderness_n oh_o what_o a_o heart_n have_v i_o sure_o my_o brethren_n such_o a_o case_n as_o this_o be_v very_o desperate_a and_o deplorable_a think_v of_o it_o betimes_o in_o vain_a it_o will_v be_v for_o you_o to_o put_v it_o off_o you_o dream_v and_o have_v conceit_n of_o knowledge_n and_o imagine_v that_o you_o have_v faith_n and_o repentance_n whereas_o alas_o you_o have_v little_a or_o none_o of_o these_o grace_n i_o pray_v therefore_o consider_v it_o now_o and_o now_o hear_v and_o tremble_v lest_o you_o tremble_v afterward_o when_o you_o be_v sink_v down_o in_o the_o pit_n for_o ever_o when_o you_o be_v in_o hell_n you_o shall_v feel_v another_o manner_n of_o tremble_v then_o now_o be_v expect_v from_o you_o for_o it_o shall_v be_v
