vain_a this_o patience_n be_v turn_v into_o fury_n and_o be_v oppress_v with_o desperation_n â–ª_o but_o christian_a patience_n will_v not_o suffer_v itself_o to_o be_v oppress_v but_o continual_o take_v hold_v upon_o hope_n whereby_o at_o length_n it_o prevail_v and_o get_v the_o victory_n it_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n not_o to_o be_v discourage_v with_o such_o trouble_n as_o daily_o happen_v there_o between_o god_n &_o man_n between_o corporal_a necessity_n &_o eternal_a death_n these_o be_v therefore_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n even_o in_o the_o great_a danger_n to_o fight_v conscience_n and_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n we_o have_v great_a need_n of_o for_o if_o we_o follow_v our_o own_o sense_n we_o shall_v be_v deceive_v and_o find_v in_o ourselves_o the_o contrary_n but_o we_o may_v not_o judge_v of_o these_o matter_n according_a to_o our_o own_o sense_n or_o as_o we_o feel_v in_o ourselves_o but_o we_o must_v stand_v to_o the_o word_n and_o thus_o think_v with_o ourselves_o that_o these_o be_v matter_n of_o faith_n and_o not_o of_o our_o own_o sense_n and_o feeling_n for_o to_o believe_v be_v not_o to_o feel_v not_o because_o these_o thing_n shall_v never_o be_v feel_v which_o we_o now_o believe_v but_o because_o faith_n must_v go_v before_o feeling_n and_o experience_n and_o we_o must_v believe_v the_o word_n although_o we_o feel_v in_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o judgement_n never_o so_o much_o to_o the_o contrary_n as_o when_o our_o heart_n oppress_v with_o calamity_n do_v think_v god_n to_o be_v angry_a with_o we_o not_o to_o care_v for_o we_o but_o to_o hate_v we_o then_o faith_n clean_a contrary_n must_v thus_o assure_v itself_o that_o with_o god_n there_o be_v neither_o anger_n nor_o hatred_n that_o he_o neither_o think_v of_o punishment_n nor_o offence_n but_o although_o he_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v afflict_v yet_o he_o do_v it_o not_o to_o the_o end_n to_o destroy_v we_o for_o with_o he_o say_v the_o psalm_n be_v mercy_n when_o we_o pray_v join_v with_o the_o commandment_n but_o also_o the_o necessity_n that_o constrain_v we_o thereto_o make_v this_o difficulty_n and_o labour_n more_o easy_a in_o the_o exercise_n of_o prayer_n when_o it_o proceed_v of_o faith_n for_o true_a prayer_n can_v not_o be_v without_o faith_n yea_o these_o two_o the_o promise_n i_o mean_v and_o tribulation_n do_v make_v our_o prayer_n hearty_a and_o fervent_a in_o these_o exercise_n yourselves_o &_o use_v prayer_n in_o your_o chamber_n secret_o and_o with_o yourselves_o alone_o as_o christ_n command_v and_o if_o satan_n go_v about_o to_o hinder_v this_o prayer_n as_o he_o be_v wont_a then_o close_o your_o eye_n and_o say_v behold_v lord_n here_o be_v trouble_v and_o anguish_n here_o be_o i_o in_o danger_n such_o a_o mount_n zion_n but_o i_o abide_v in_o the_o simple_a way_n of_o faith_n &_o true_a religion_n which_o be_v the_o healthful_a hill_n that_o the_o lord_n himself_o have_v appoint_v in_o that_o he_o call_v it_o the_o healthful_a hill_n or_o the_o hill_n from_o whence_o help_n and_o succour_n come_v he_o reject_v and_o condemn_v all_o other_o hill_n which_o have_v a_o show_n of_o help_n and_o idolatry_n have_v great_a success_n time_n yet_o be_v it_o but_o for_o a_o time_n so_o say_v king_n achas_n the_o god_n of_o the_o king_n of_o the_o syrian_n do_v help_v they_o therefore_o will_v i_o also_o seek_v their_o favour_n and_o they_o shall_v help_v i_o but_o what_o say_v the_o scripture_n the_o god_n of_o syria_n be_v the_o destruction_n both_o of_o they_o and_o of_o all_o israel_n and_o brickle_a life_n but_o in_o death_n he_o do_v not_o only_o forsake_v they_o but_o drive_v they_o down_o to_o the_o deep_a pit_n of_o hell_n therefore_o whatsoever_o worldly_a and_o visible_a comfort_n and_o delight_n the_o heart_n of_o man_n can_v here_o desire_v or_o enjoy_v he_o find_v they_o uncertain_a and_o short_o must_v forsake_v they_o and_o yet_o withal_o they_o bring_v unspeakable_a torment_n and_o affliction_n of_o mind_n and_o lead_v man_n into_o such_o blindness_n that_o they_o have_v no_o regard_n of_o god_n at_o all_o who_o do_v not_o delight_v his_o true_a worshipper_n with_o vain_a pleasure_n of_o this_o world_n which_o endure_v but_o a_o moment_n but_o replenish_v they_o with_o everlasting_a joy_n for_o thus_o he_o say_v i_o will_v see_v you_o again_o and_o your_o invisible_a and_o yet_o to_o be_v look_v for_o lest_o we_o shall_v think_v it_o to_o be_v but_o a_o mere_a speculation_n as_o some_o do_v make_v it_o there_o be_v thing_n to_o be_v look_v for_o of_o the_o which_o we_o have_v experience_n in_o this_o life_n that_o be_v to_o say_v a_o good_a conscience_n a_o joyful_a heart_n a_o invincible_a faith_n which_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v against_o all_o storm_n of_o tentation_n against_o poverty_n envy_n reproach_n and_o slander_v of_o the_o world_n against_o error_n and_o false_a doctrine_n and_o even_o against_o death_n itself_o thus_o we_o must_v learn_v to_o know_v the_o nature_n of_o faith_n namely_o that_o it_o be_v a_o will_n or_o knowledge_n or_o a_o expectation_n rest_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o word_n show_v and_o set_v forth_o unto_o we_o invisible_a help_n and_o yet_o to_o be_v look_v for_o as_o certain_a and_o unfallible_a and_o although_o we_o think_v it_o long_o before_o they_o come_v yet_o will_v they_o come_v when_o it_o shall_v be_v most_o to_o our_o joy_n &_o comfort_n and_o this_o be_v it_o that_o these_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n do_v here_o express_v i_o lift_v up_o my_o eye_n to_o the_o hill_n those_o hill_n and_o hope_v for_o invisible_a comfort_n in_o like_a manner_n must_v we_o do_v also_o i_o be_o in_o distress_n or_o affliction_n of_o body_n or_o mind_n i_o be_o in_o necessity_n and_o and_o our_o brethren_n when_o satan_n begin_v to_o rage_n when_o trouble_n arise_v when_o for_o the_o word_n sake_n we_o be_v hate_v spoil_v persecute_a and_o put_v to_o death_n in_o these_o danger_n whether_o shall_v we_o run_v calamity_n even_o this_o must_v be_v our_o refuge_n to_o say_v and_o confess_v that_o god_n be_v great_a than_o all_o our_o misery_n and_o albeit_o we_o perish_v or_o watch_v when_o we_o sleep_v if_o he_o be_v not_o careful_a for_o we_o when_o we_o be_v careless_a we_o shall_v perish_v every_o moment_n we_o shall_v lose_v our_o tongue_n our_o eye_n our_o ear_n our_o hand_n our_o foot_n and_o our_o life_n also_o and_o for_o as_o much_o as_o these_o thing_n do_v many_o time_n chance_n and_o when_o we_o little_a doubt_n or_o think_v thereof_o our_o wife_n our_o child_n or_o our_o friend_n die_v or_o else_o fall_v into_o some_o great_a danger_n it_o be_v a_o minifest_z token_n that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o devil_n be_v the_o kingdom_n of_o death_n the_o word_n and_o ministry_n &_o moreover_o he_o see_v that_o this_o glorious_a gift_n can_v not_o be_v preserve_v by_o man_n diligence_n therefore_o he_o go_v about_o here_o to_o stir_v up_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n to_o pray_v for_o the_o preservation_n of_o this_o gift_n as_o if_o he_o say_v here_o be_v the_o lord_n own_o seat_n and_o throne_n of_o judgement_n notwithstanding_o how_o few_o prayer_n be_v very_o necessary_a for_o we_o see_v daily_o how_o the_o true_a professor_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v in_o danger_n by_o the_o minister_n of_o satan_n the_o enemy_n of_o god_n &_o his_o truth_n on_o every_o side_n which_o can_v be_v content_a rather_o to_o have_v the_o turk_n to_o reign_v over_o they_o yea_o the_o devil_n himself_o and_o all_o the_o fury_n of_o hell_n then_o to_o see_v we_o prosper_v and_o the_o gospel_n to_o flourish_v lest_o their_o curse_a work_n of_o darkness_n and_o infidelity_n shall_v appear_v unto_o the_o world_n verse_n 7._o peace_n be_v within_o thy_o wall_n and_o prosperity_n within_o thy_o palace_n now_o that_o the_o prophet_n have_v exhort_v all_o man_n to_o pray_v for_o the_o peace_n and_o prosperity_n of_o jerusalem_n he_o turn_v unto_o the_o city_n and_o do_v not_o only_o wish_v well_o unto_o it_o but_o also_o he_o show_v unto_o other_o how_o they_o shall_v pray_v for_o it_o the_o sum_n whereof_o be_v that_o true_a religion_n may_v concord_n in_o the_o church_n and_o peace_n in_o the_o civil_a state_n there_o can_v no_o good_a thing_n be_v lack_v &_o therefore_o the_o devil_n so_o busy_o labour_v to_o trouble_v the_o peace_n of_o they_o both_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o there_o be_v such_o a_o multitude_n of_o false_a prophet_n rebel_n &_o seditious_a person_n amongst_o this_o people_n as_o the_o story_n do_v testify_v wherefore_o david_n be_v teach_v by_o his_o own_o experience_n pray_v for_o these_o 2._o thing_n without_o the_o which_o the_o world_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o wild_a desert_n example_n hereof_o may_v be_v unto_o we_o the_o late_a time_n wherein_o we_o live_v under_o the_o pope_n before_o this_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n begin_v to_o shine_v for_o then_o when_o the_o sound_a doctrine_n of_o the_o word_n be_v lack_v what_o can_v the_o pope_n &_o all_o his_o shaveling_n do_v what_o one_o verse_n do_v they_o right_o understand_v throughout_o the_o whole_a psalter_n whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o resist_v most_o manifest_a impiety_n which_o by_o the_o strong_a &_o mighty_a delusion_n of_o the_o devil_n overflow_v the_o world_n as_o in_o pilgrimage_n where_o they_o maintain_v most_o damnable_a idolatry_n and_o cause_v the_o people_n to_o adore_v the_o work_n of_o their_o own_o hand_n and_o if_o any_o man_n speak_v against_o they_o he_o be_v up_o and_o by_o take_v and_o burn_v as_o a_o heretic_n so_o true_a be_v it_o that_o when_o the_o word_n be_v once_o lose_v the_o world_n remain_v in_o most_o horrible_a darkness_n and_o can_v do_v nothing_o else_o but_o abuse_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o so_o fall_v to_o most_o detestable_a impiety_n or_o else_o to_o desperation_n this_o david_n foresee_v and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v so_o earnest_o for_o the_o prosperity_n of_o jerusalem_n for_o faithful_a pastor_n in_o the_o church_n and_o godly_a prince_n in_o the_o politic_a state_n verse_n 8._o for_o my_o brethren_n and_o neighbour_n sake_n i_o will_v wish_v thou_o now_o prosperity_n here_o david_n show_v the_o cause_n as_o he_o do_v also_o in_o the_o verse_n follow_v why_o he_o pray_v thus_o for_o jerusalem_n as_o if_o he_o say_v in_o that_o i_o wish_v that_o peace_n may_v be_v in_o thou_o o_o jerusalem_n in_o that_o i_o desire_v thy_o prosperity_n and_o welfare_n i_o do_v it_o for_o my_o the_o godly_a pastor_n when_o he_o go_v about_o with_o great_a care_n &_o diligence_n to_o reform_v the_o corrupt_a life_n and_o wickedness_n of_o the_o people_n see_v notwithstanding_o that_o the_o more_o part_n still_o remain_v perverse_a &_o intractable_a the_o magistrate_n travel_v with_o like_a care_n and_o diligence_n in_o his_o call_n findeth_z the_o people_n disobedient_a &_o incorrigible_a likewise_o be_v it_o in_o household_n government_n what_o unfaithful_a service_n shall_v thou_o find_v even_o amongst_o those_o who_o thou_o think_v to_o have_v find_v most_o true_a and_o faithful_a hereof_o it_o come_v that_o many_o be_v discomfort_a and_o utter_o discourage_v see_v so_o little_a fruit_n and_o success_n to_o ensue_v of_o their_o godly_a travel_n these_o thing_n and_o earnest_o think_v upon_o they_o so_o this_o psalm_n be_v a_o prayer_n against_o the_o mighty_a rich_a and_o wealthy_a of_o the_o world_n which_o either_o cruel_o molest_v and_o vex_v or_o proud_o deride_v and_o contemn_v the_o godly_a as_o the_o last_o verse_n do_v declare_v and_o these_o be_v not_o only_o such_o as_o prefer_v wicked_a doctrine_n superstition_n &_o gospel_n and_o partaker_n with_o we_o of_o the_o name_n and_o glory_n of_o christ_n of_o such_o there_o be_v a_o great_a number_n amongst_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n for_o they_o have_v the_o law_n sacrifice_n and_o ceremony_n institute_v by_o moses_n according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n they_o have_v great_a plenty_n of_o prophet_n and_o godly_a teacher_n yet_o how_o they_o use_v they_o the_o story_n do_v declare_v when_o elisha_n send_v the_o son_n of_o a_o prophet_n unto_o jehu_n 9_o the_o other_o say_v wherefore_o come_v this_o mad_a fellow_n unto_o thou_o the_o psalm_n also_o &_o complain_v be_v herein_o express_v in_o that_o he_o look_v about_o on_o every_o side_n and_o seek_v for_o succour_n can_v find_v none_o to_o help_v he_o but_o only_o the_o inhabior_n of_o heaven_n it_o be_v nothing_o so_o be_v all_o the_o attempt_n of_o the_o adversary_n full_a of_o threaten_n but_o in_o the_o end_n they_o come_v to_o nothing_o this_o be_v the_o wisdom_n of_o christian_n to_o diminish_v the_o power_n of_o the_o adversary_n &_o contrariwise_o to_o amplify_v the_o word_n &_o the_o mighty_a protection_n of_o the_o lord_n the_o devil_n sin_n death_n and_o other_o spiritual_a tentation_n be_v great_a but_o a_o christian_a can_v make_v a_o distinction_n of_o greatness_n for_o greatness_n be_v understand_v two_o manner_n of_o way_n the_o one_o be_v according_a to_o the_o eye_n which_o the_o eye_n judge_v after_o the_o outward_a show_n the_o other_o be_v according_a to_o the_o truth_n which_o the_o truth_n judge_v after_o the_o word_n the_o greatness_n therefore_o of_o sin_n death_n wicked_a king_n prince_n
call_v grace_n heaven_n itself_o by_o the_o which_o we_o have_v a_o open_a passage_n unto_o heaven_n and_o the_o which_o we_o can_v never_o attain_v unto_o by_o the_o law_n by_o work_n or_o by_o our_o own_o endeavour_n but_o rather_o as_o a_o most_o large_a heaven_n it_o receive_v we_o beleve_v that_o by_o adoption_n we_o be_v make_v righteous_a before_o god_n through_o christ._n hereby_o we_o may_v see_v what_o the_o intent_n and_o purpose_n of_o the_o prophet_n be_v in_o this_o psalm_n namely_o to_o teach_v we_o the_o true_a way_n to_o righteousness_n life_n and_o salvation_n again_o to_o thing_n he_o show_v his_o own_o experience_n and_o lay_v open_a unto_o we_o his_o own_o heart_n which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v exercise_v and_o school_v with_o many_o tentation_n that_o so_o he_o may_v attain_v to_o this_o doctrine_n wherein_o he_o go_v about_o here_o to_o enstruct_v we_o also_o the_o sum_n whereof_o be_v that_o he_o rest_v whole_o in_o the_o hope_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o in_o the_o sure_a trust_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o his_o sin_n but_o these_o thing_n shall_v more_o clear_o appear_v hereafter_o in_o expound_v of_o the_o psalm_n verse_n 1._o out_o of_o the_o desperation_n think_v himself_o forsake_v of_o god_n when_o he_o see_v his_o own_o unworthiness_n and_o desert_n accuse_v before_o god_n as_o a_o terrible_a judge_n yea_o when_o it_o seem_v unto_o he_o that_o god_n have_v not_o only_o forsake_v he_o but_o cast_v he_o away_o for_o ever_o hate_v &_o abhor_v he_o for_o his_o sin_n these_o tentation_n be_v much_o more_o terrible_a than_o those_o which_o man_n common_o fall_v into_o for_o they_o be_v not_o without_o danger_n of_o soul_n &_o eternal_a salvation_n therefore_o he_o use_v here_o this_o manner_n of_o speech_n say_v out_o of_o the_o depth_n i_o call_v unto_o thou_o etc_n etc_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v great_a be_v the_o trouble_n wherewith_o i_o be_o oppress_v for_o i_o feel_v my_o own_o sin_n and_o the_o just_a wrath_n of_o god_n upon_o i_o for_o the_o same_o neither_o can_v i_o find_v relief_n or_o comfort_n to_o my_o restless_a &_o afflict_a soul_n against_o the_o malice_n of_o man_n wherewith_o they_o molest_v and_o vex_v we_o there_o be_v remedy_n to_o be_v find_v but_o this_o wound_n be_v uncurable_a except_o the_o lord_n send_v help_v and_o succour_v from_o above_o and_o in_o deed_n such_o trouble_n as_o the_o godly_a be_v common_o exercise_v withal_o as_o the_o loss_n of_o good_n wife_n child_n &_o such_o other_o may_v yet_o be_v overcome_v or_o bear_v with_o patience_n moreover_o in_o those_o which_o be_v count_v inferior_a sin_n as_o the_o offence_n of_o youth_n the_o deject_v &_o break_v hearted_a may_v more_o easy_o be_v raise_v up_o again_o but_o these_o affliction_n seem_v to_o they_o and_o be_v in_o deed_n untollerable_a when_o they_o feel_v themselves_o oppress_v with_o such_o horrible_a and_o hellish_a cogitation_n that_o they_o can_v see_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o they_o be_v cast_v away_o from_o god_n for_o ever_o they_o therefore_o that_o feel_v such_o bitter_a tentation_n god._n have_v here_o a_o example_n that_o david_n in_o himself_o feel_v and_o have_v experience_n of_o the_o like_a for_o it_o make_v the_o tentation_n much_o more_o grevous_a when_o they_o which_o be_v thus_o afflict_v feel_v that_o as_o to_o they_o it_o seem_v which_o none_o else_o do_v feel_v but_o they_o alone_o we_o must_v learn_v therefore_o that_o even_o the_o godly_a have_v ever_o suffer_v the_o same_o affliction_n and_o have_v be_v beat_v down_o even_o to_o death_n with_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n and_o sin_n as_o we_o may_v see_v here_o by_o the_o example_n of_o david_n cry_v even_o as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o hell_n and_o say_n out_o of_o the_o depth_n do_v i_o cry_v unto_o thou_o oh_o lord_n etc_n etc_n but_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o know_v that_o we_o sustain_v not_o these_o trouble_n and_o tentation_n alone_o but_o we_o must_v also_o learn_v the_o way_n whereby_o such_o as_o have_v suffer_v the_o like_a tentation_n have_v be_v raise_v up_o again_o and_o here_o you_o see_v david_n what_o he_o do_v you_o see_v whither_o he_o fly_v in_o his_o great_a distress_n he_o despair_v not_o but_o cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n as_o one_o yet_o hope_v assure_o to_o find_v relief_n and_o comfort_n rest_v thou_o also_o in_o this_o hope_n and_o do_v as_o he_o do_v david_n be_v not_o tempt_v to_o the_o end_n he_o shall_v despair_v think_v not_o thou_o therefore_o that_o thy_o tentation_n be_v send_v unto_o thou_o that_o thou_o shall_v be_v swallow_v up_o with_o sorrow_n and_o desperation_n do_v if_o thou_o be_v bring_v down_o even_o to_o the_o gate_n of_o hell_n believe_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v sure_o raise_v thou_o up_o again_o if_o thou_o who_o have_v say_v that_o a_o trouble_a spirit_n be_v a_o sacrifice_n unto_o he_o it_o be_v expedient_a also_o to_o have_v some_o faithful_a brother_n at_o hand_n which_o may_v comfort_v we_o in_o these_o bitter_a conflict_n for_o god_n will_v that_o in_o his_o church_n one_o shall_v help_v to_o comfort_v a_o other_o as_o member_n knit_v together_o in_o one_o body_n and_o he_o have_v promise_v that_o when_o two_o be_v gather_v together_o in_o his_o name_n he_o will_v be_v the_o third_o amongst_o they_o and_o doubtless_o nothing_o comfort_v a_o afflict_a conscience_n so_o much_o as_o to_o hear_v some_o godly_a brother_n declare_v out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o such_o terror_n and_o affliction_n be_v send_v of_o god_n not_o to_o destroy_v we_o but_o to_o humble_v we_o thereby_o to_o make_v we_o to_o acknowledge_v the_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n offer_v unto_o we_o and_o to_o receive_v the_o same_o with_o thankful_a heart_n but_o if_o in_o this_o distress_n we_o be_v destitute_a of_o the_o help_n of_o such_o faithful_a brethren_n we_o must_v then_o do_v as_o davidâ—id_v â—id_z in_o this_o place_n that_o be_v we_o must_v cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n &_o pray_v and_o call_v he_o father_n who_o we_o know_v and_o worship_v in_o christ_n alone_o on_o this_o god_n with_o deep_a sigh_n he_o call_v that_o he_o will_v with_o the_o eye_n of_o mercy_n look_v upon_o he_o and_o gracious_o harken_v unto_o his_o prayer_n but_o if_o we_o think_v that_o we_o can_v not_o pray_v with_o such_o a_o mind_n or_o with_o such_o fervency_n of_o spirit_n as_o these_o word_n assail_v we_o as_o poverty_n sickness_n vexation_n of_o mind_n and_o such_o like_a we_o shall_v endure_v these_o tentation_n with_o faith_n &_o hope_n declare_v our_o patience_n towards_o god_n and_o hope_v for_o deliverance_n at_o his_o hand_n in_o his_o good_a time_n like_a as_o paul_n also_o write_v to_o the_o roman_n will_v we_o to_o rejoice_v even_o in_o our_o affliction_n and_o tentation_n for_o if_o god_n do_v not_o love_v we_o satan_n will_v not_o hate_v we_o if_o we_o be_v not_o partaker_n of_o life_n our_o enemy_n will_v not_o persecute_v we_o with_o death_n so_o those_o which_o be_v most_o just_a and_o holy_a because_o they_o hold_v fast_o the_o hope_n of_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n satan_n tempt_v most_o of_o all_o which_o the_o horror_n of_o sin_n yea_o and_o that_o in_o such_o wise_a as_o some_o time_n the_o take_n of_o one_o little_a cup_n of_o wine_n or_o of_o one_o word_n unadvised_o escape_v he_o make_v such_o a_o sin_n that_o baptism_n and_o all_o other_o gift_n and_o blessing_n which_o we_o possess_v seem_v now_o to_o stand_v we_o in_o no_o effect_n yea_o many_o time_n even_o those_o work_n which_o be_v good_a and_o holy_a he_o reprove_v and_o condemn_v as_o most_o wicked_a that_o he_o may_v bring_v the_o tender_a and_o timorous_a conscience_n into_o heaviness_n all_o these_o thing_n i_o say_v the_o godly_a do_v find_v and_o feel_v but_o if_o we_o shall_v follow_v our_o own_o sense_n and_o feel_n without_o the_o word_n how_o far_o and_o how_o miserable_o shall_v we_o wander_v from_o god_n thus_o satan_n deal_v not_o with_o the_o papist_n but_o go_v a_o contrary_a way_n to_o work_v excuse_v yea_o high_o commend_v in_o they_o most_o horrible_a and_o detestable_a crime_n as_o excellent_a virtue_n contrariwise_o we_o that_o desire_v and_o endeavour_n to_o live_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o moreover_o do_v teach_v the_o word_n sincere_o and_o faithful_o do_v often_o time_n suffer_v such_o trouble_n and_o vexation_n of_o conscience_n as_o if_o we_o live_v most_o wicked_o we_o must_v learn_v therefore_o out_o of_o the_o word_n that_o these_o thing_n hâ—ppen_v to_o the_o godly_a and_o must_v be_v overcome_v with_o such_o cogitation_n as_o the_o holy_a ghost_n here_o set_v forth_o teach_v so_o that_o we_o must_v thus_o think_v with_o ourselves_o i_o be_o call_v to_o the_o communion_n and_o partake_n of_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n and_o be_o baptize_v if_o in_o the_o common_a course_n of_o this_o life_n there_o be_v any_o offence_n by_o i_o commit_v there_o be_v mercy_n with_o the_o lord_n and_o in_o hope_n of_o this_o mercy_n i_o will_v let_v they_o pass_v moreover_o our_o doctrine_n although_o the_o world_n slander_v it_o and_o most_o spiteful_o persecute_v it_o must_v needs_o be_v true_a this_o doctrine_n after_o that_o we_o once_o believe_v in_o christ_n show_v unto_o we_o that_o with_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o mercy_n for_o god_n can_v not_o otherwise_o do_v but_o love_v we_o and_o bestow_v his_o benefit_n upon_o we_o now_o if_o the_o contrary_n appear_v to_o my_o sense_n and_o feeling_n i_o pass_v not_o neither_o if_o i_o shall_v die_v for_o it_o will_v i_o suffer_v this_o knowledge_n to_o be_v wrest_v from_o i_o but_o i_o steadfast_o believe_v that_o in_o the_o earth_n beneath_o and_o in_o the_o heaven_n above_o there_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o mercy_n thus_o to_o believe_v i_o be_o persuade_v not_o by_o feeling_n or_o by_o my_o own_o experience_n but_o by_o the_o word_n which_o say_v that_o with_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v mercy_n for_o i_o and_o all_o that_o do_v believe_v but_o for_o they_o that_o believe_v not_o there_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o wrath_n i_o will_v therefore_o overcome_v my_o tentation_n with_o the_o word_n and_o will_v write_v this_o promise_n in_o my_o heart_n that_o since_o i_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n &_o doubt_v not_o but_o that_o my_o sin_n be_v pardon_v through_o his_o blood_n i_o shall_v not_o be_v confound_v although_o all_o sense_n reason_n and_o experience_n will_v persuade_v and_o prove_v to_o i_o the_o contrary_n in_o myself_o i_o perceive_v nothing_o vut_o wrath_n not_o comprehend_v the_o same_o for_o when_o we_o pray_v we_o so_o pray_v that_o it_o seem_v we_o will_v be_v content_a with_o a_o little_a so_o they_o that_o be_v in_o trouble_n &_o heaviness_n of_o mind_n do_v wish_n for_o the_o comfort_n and_o quietness_n of_o one_o day_n they_o that_o be_v in_o poverty_n will_v be_v glad_a to_o have_v bread_n for_o the_o present_a day_n us._n but_o god_n do_v not_o think_v this_o enough_o for_o he_o give_v above_o all_o that_o we_o can_v either_o conceive_v or_o ask_v and_o most_o true_a it_o be_v that_o we_o do_v not_o know_v how_o or_o what_o to_o ask_v and_o here_o i_o glad_o use_v my_o own_o experience_n for_o what_o and_o how_o much_o have_v he_o give_v unto_o i_o alone_o i_o wish_v no_o more_o but_o that_o the_o horrible_a abuse_n of_o the_o much_o of_o god_n as_o god_n be_v ready_a and_o willing_a to_o give_v the_o cause_n hereof_o be_v the_o straitness_n of_o our_o heart_n the_o slenderness_n of_o our_o hope_n and_o weakness_n of_o offence_n of_o lie_v and_o murder_n may_v no_o where_o be_v lack_v wherefore_o as_o this_o kingdom_n must_v not_o be_v esteem_v and_o judge_v according_a to_o the_o outward_a face_n thereof_o for_o the_o spirit_n from_o christ_n the_o high_a priest_n and_o head_n of_o the_o church_n unto_o all_o the_o member_n of_o the_o same_o signify_v for_o by_o the_o beard_n and_o extreme_a part_n of_o the_o garment_n he_o signify_v that_o as_o far_o as_o the_o church_n reach_v so_o far_o spread_v that_o unity_n which_o flow_v from_o christ_n her_o head_n or_o by_o the_o beard_n we_o may_v understand_v those_o to_o who_o the_o office_n of_o teach_v belong_v because_o the_o beard_n be_v join_v unto_o the_o mouth_n which_o be_v the_o instrument_n of_o doctrine_n and_o by_o the_o extreme_a part_n of_o the_o garment_n the_o rest_n of_o the_o church_n which_o be_v the_o garment_n of_o christ_n this_o similitude_n express_v most_o lively_a how_o great_a the_o virtue_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o concord_n be_v wherewith_o all_o the_o member_n of_o christ_n be_v anoint_a for_o it_o make_v their_o life_n sweet_a and_o pleasant_a in_o so_o much_o that_o whatsoever_o they_o do_v it_o give_v a_o sweet_a odor_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god._n if_o the_o unquiet_a spirit_n which_o trouble_v the_o church_n at_o this_o day_n can_v believe_v that_o the_o peace_n and_o concord_n of_o the_o church_n be_v such_o a_o holy_a and_o a_o pleasant_a ointment_n to_o the_o lord_n church_n separate_a from_o all_o profane_a use_n they_o will_v be_v more_o sober_a and_o circumspect_a than_o they_o be_v but_o because_o they_o believe_v it_o not_o therefore_o they_o employ_v this_o holy_a ointment_n to_o unholy_a use_n seek_v thereby_o their_o own_o glory_n yea_o they_o turn_v the_o psalm_n clean_o contrary_a and_o say_v in_o their_o heart_n behold_v how_o pleasant_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o trouble_v the_o brethren_n they_o will_v not_o have_v they_o to_o enjoy_v this_o holy_a ointment_n that_o be_v to_o dwell_v and_o live_v together_o in_o this_o heavenly_a concord_n these_o we_o must_v fly_v to_o these_o we_o must_v in_o no_o wise_n be_v like_o but_o must_v learn_v that_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o church_n be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n which_o we_o must_v defend_v and_o maintain_v with_o all_o our_o power_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o pleasant_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o his_o angel_n then_o when_o the_o pastor_n and_o governor_n of_o the_o church_n do_v dwell_v together_o in_o godly_a concord_n teach_v and_o follow_v with_o one_o consent_n one_o true_a sincere_a and_o uniform_a doctrine_n between_o the_o pope_n and_o his_o rabble_n there_o be_v great_a concord_n papist_n for_o there_o be_v a_o concord_n even_o amongst_o thief_n as_o there_o be_v between_o judas_n and_o the_o pharisee_o but_o this_o be_v not_o the_o concord_n which_o the_o psalm_n here_o speak_v of_o but_o the_o psalm_n commend_v that_o concord_n which_o be_v amongst_o those_o that_o have_v the_o pure_a and_o sincere_a word_n therefore_o the_o prophet_n here_o use_v a_o similitude_n which_o only_o pertain_v to_o aaron_n name_v to_o be_v you_o high_a priest_n by_o god_n own_o mouth_n signify_v thereby_o that_o this_o concord_n be_v spread_v by_o the_o preacher_n of_o the_o word_n throughout_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o the_o church_n so_o that_o not_o only_o the_o body_n itself_o be_v refresh_v with_o this_o ointment_n but_o also_o the_o sweet_a smell_n thereof_o be_v disperse_v every_o where_o and_o the_o fame_n of_o the_o church_n be_v glorious_a both_o before_o god_n &_o man_n those_o i_o mean_v which_o understand_v and_o acknowledge_v this_o heavenly_a benefit_n verse_n 3._o as_o the_o dew_n of_o hermon_n which_o fall_v upon_o the_o mountain_n of_o zion_n for_o there_o the_o lord_n appoint_v the_o blessing_n and_o life_n for_o ever_o hermon_n hermon_n be_v a_o mountain_n join_v upon_o libanus_n hereof_o it_o come_v that_o in_o a_o other_o place_n he_o call_v judea_n which_o be_v compass_v with_o mountain_n the_o land_n of_o hermonijm_n as_o touch_v this_o similitude_n i_o think_v the_o prophet_n use_v the_o common_a manner_n of_o speak_v for_o whereas_o the_o mountain_n often_o time_n seem_v to_o those_o that_o behold_v they_o a_o far_o of_o to_o reach_v up_o even_o unto_o heaven_n the_o dew_n which_o come_v from_o heaven_n seem_v to_o fall_v from_o the_o high_a mountain_n unto_o the_o hill_n which_o be_v under_o they_o therefore_o he_o say_v that_o the_o dew_n descend_v from_o hermon_n unto_o the_o mount_n zion_n because_o it_o so_o seem_v unto_o those_o that_o do_v behold_v it_o a_o far_o of_o and_o this_o clause_n after_o my_o judgement_n pertain_v to_o civil_a concord_n like_a as_o the_o former_a similitude_n pertain_v to_o the_o church_n because_o god_n through_o peace_n and_o concord_n make_v common_a wealth_n and_o kingdom_n to_o flourish_v even_o as_o seed_n herb_n and_o plant_n be_v fresh_a and_o flourish_v through_o the_o morning_n dew_n the_o beginning_n of_o this_o peace_n come_v from_o the_o prince_n &_o magistrate_n as_o from_o mount_n hermon_n â–ª_o from_o who_o it_o flow_v unto_o every_o particular_a person_n and_o to_o the_o whole_a common_a wealth_n which_o be_v refresh_v therewith_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o dew_n of_o heaven_n whereby_o all_o thing_n do_v prosper_v and_o flourish_v for_o like_v as_o by_o the_o dew_n all_o thing_n that_o grow_v upon_o the_o earth_n do_v spring_n and_o increase_v even_o so_o small_a thing_n through_o peace_n &_o concord_n do_v grow_v to_o great_a increase_n contrariwise_o like_v as_o in_o the_o time_n of_o great_a heat_n &_o drought_n all_o thing_n wither_v away_o &_o perish_v so_o war_n sedition_n &_o tumult_n subvert_a and_o destroy_v common_a weal_n &_o kingdom_n wherefore_o we_o have_v need_n not_o only_o of_o diligent_a exhortation_n but_o also_o of_o continual_a hearty_a and_o faithful_a prayer_n unto_o god_n that_o he_o will_v gracious_o continue_v this_o heavenly_a benefit_n of_o peace_n and_o concord_n among_o we_o as_o the_o prophet_n now_o add_v there_o the_o lord_n appoint_v the_o blessing_n and_o life_n or_o life_n for_o so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o hebrew_n as_o much_o to_o say_v as_o there_o will_v god_n dwell_v where_o concord_n be_v this_o be_v in_o deed_n a_o excellent_a commendation_n wherewith_o he_o so_o beautify_v and_o extol_v peace_n and_o with_o this_o commendation_n ought_v the_o heart_n of_o all_o man_n to_o be_v stir_v up_o to_o the_o love_n of_o peace_n be_v since_o they_o hear_v that_o god_n will_v dwell_v with_o such_o prince_n such_o pastor_n and_o such_o people_n as_o love_v peace_n and_o defend_v the_o same_o it_o follow_v then_o that_o where_o the_o enemy_n of_o peace_n be_v and_o such_o as_o delight_v in_o unnecessary_a war_n as_o be_v those_o monster_n which_o be_v idle_o and_o wicked_o bring_v up_o in_o the_o court_n of_o prince_n and_o courtly_a life_n together_o with_o the_o profane_a &_o godless_a multitude_n there_o dwell_v the_o devil_n with_o his_o angel_n and_o there_o have_v god_n appoint_v malediction_n death_n and_o destruction_n there_o be_v a_o certain_a vehemency_n in_o this_o word_n life_n or_o life_n in_o the_o plural_a number_n for_o it_o signify_v all_o kind_n of_o life_n as_o the_o priest_n the_o levite_n the_o faithful_a the_o magistrate_n artificer_n citizen_n husbandman_n etc_n etc_n as_o if_o he_o say_v all_o state_n of_o life_n shall_v be_v bless_v with_o
