own_o bosom_n and_o faithful_o commune_v with_o your_o own_o soul_n whether_o you_o have_v try_v out_o your_o heart_n and_o reins_o and_o your_o spirit_n have_v make_v diligent_a search_n as_o he_o both_o do_v and_o require_v observe_v heedful_o whether_o cast_v off_o all_o mask_n and_o visor_n of_o hypocrisy_n all_o figleaf_n of_o diminution_n and_o excuse_n how_o thou_o have_v expose_v thyself_o and_o thy_o soul_n naked_a unto_o the_o view_n of_o thy_o search_a conscience_n whether_o thy_o mortify_a heart_n beginning_n to_o thaw_v with_o remorse_n have_v free_o open_v her_o pleit_n and_o fold_n wherein_o she_o hide_v her_o iniquity_n and_o present_v thou_o with_o her_o sin_n in_o their_o true_a shape_n that_o thou_o may_v as_o true_o detest_v and_o abhor_v they_o if_o it_o be_v so_o it_o be_v well_o if_o not_o take_v heed_n labour_n and_o strive_v weep_v cry_v pray_v do_v not_o cease_v be_v not_o satisfy_v till_o it_o be_v so_o for_o than_o it_o will_v never_o be_v right_a thy_o preparation_n will_v lack_v of_o his_o due_n and_o thy_o examination_n will_v be_v lame_a but_o i_o examine_v this_o examination_n no_o far_o it_o be_v a_o secret_a act_n know_v only_o to_o wherein_o i_o may_v more_o free_o examine_v and_o evict_v your_o soul_n as_o have_v outward_a and_o sensible_a effect_n whereby_o they_o may_v be_v judge_v and_o the_o first_o of_o these_o to_o omit_v knowledge_n whereof_o we_o have_v speak_v sufficient_o already_o be_v faith_n but_o here_o examination_n thou_o think_v altogether_o needless_a for_o thou_o be_v most_o sure_a and_o certain_a thou_o believe_v yet_o what_o if_o one_o shall_v tell_v thou_o thou_o do_v not_o believe_v like_o enough_o thou_o will_v tell_v he_o against_o thou_o do_v not_o believe_v he_o in_o that_o for_o thou_o will_v still_o say_v thou_o know_v nothing_o better_a than_o that_o thou_o believe_v why_o and_o i_o know_v it_o too_o and_o know_v more_o that_o the_o very_a devil_n believe_v and_o tremble_v which_o be_v inconvenience_n search_v now_o and_o examine_v thyself_o narrow_o and_o see_v if_o thy_o faith_n do_v not_o deal_v thus_o with_o god_n in_o the_o chief_a article_n of_o it_o scarce_o ever_o believe_v any_o thing_n but_o what_o it_o like_v the_o object_n of_o divine_a faith_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n wherein_o beside_o history_n the_o chief_a thing_n it_o propose_v to_o believe_v be_v but_o three_o precept_n commination_n and_o promise_v precept_n of_o duty_n commination_n of_o punishment_n and_o promise_v of_o reward_n to_o the_o observer_n or_o neglecter_n of_o they_o and_o all_o else_o we_o can_v away_o with_o there_o be_v no_o condemnation_n to_o they_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n say_v st._n paul_n a_o gracious_a promise_n and_o aâ—very_n cordial_a to_o the_o soul_n every_o man_n be_v ready_a to_o lay_v hold_n of_o it_o before_o it_o be_v out_o of_o his_o mouth_n but_o to_o who_o do_v it_o appertain_v to_o they_o as_o it_o follow_v which_o walk_v not_o after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n this_o be_v a_o severe_a duty_n on_o our_o part_n and_o a_o very_a corrosive_n to_o the_o flesh_n which_o will_v hardly_o be_v bring_v in_o subjection_n to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o will_v not_o easy_o believe_v it_o shall_v or_o possible_o may_v be_v thus_o thy_o fruitless_a and_o preposterous_a faith_n be_v ever_o strong_a to_o lay_v hold_n on_o the_o promise_n though_o weak_a and_o of_o no_o power_n to_o work_v obedience_n to_o the_o command_n or_o believe_v the_o judgement_n denounce_v against_o disobeyer_n for_o do_v thou_o so_o true_o thy_o belief_n will_v teach_v thou_o to_o tremble_v for_o which_o cause_n i_o tell_v thou_o thy_o faith_n which_o in_o this_o case_n be_v only_o a_o carnal_a confidence_n fall_v short_a of_o that_o which_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o be_v find_v in_o devil_n that_o believe_v and_o tremble_v nay_o if_o we_o search_v and_o examine_v a_o little_a far_o we_o shall_v find_v thy_o faith_n fail_v even_o in_o the_o very_a promise_n for_o though_o in_o spiritual_a promise_n that_o concern_v mercy_n and_o remission_n of_o

providence_n of_o he_o upon_o earth_n tell_v he_o how_o of_o his_o father_n almighty_a that_o know_v whereof_o he_o shall_v need_v and_o will_v not_o fail_v if_o he_o first_o seek_v his_o kingdom_n and_o the_o righteousness_n thereof_o to_o add_v and_o supply_v all_o other_o thing_n that_o be_v necessary_a and_o you_o shall_v give_v he_o as_o much_o comfort_n as_o if_o you_o have_v cast_v the_o water_n and_o after_o many_o day_n thou_o shall_v find_v it_o or_o that_o of_o another_o be_v that_o give_v to_o the_o poor_a dare_v unto_o the_o lord_n yet_o nothing_o can_v move_v he_o which_o manifest_o argue_v either_o he_o do_v not_o believe_v god_n when_o he_o say_v it_o or_o at_o least_o not_o believe_v he_o be_v a_o good_a paymaster_n yet_o this_o man_n think_v he_o have_v faith_n nay_o many_o of_o they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o relieve_v as_o they_o can_v find_v in_o their_o heart_n to_o oppress_v and_o grind_v those_o that_o be_v poor_a enough_o already_o and_o as_o if_o they_o conceive_v that_o honest_a course_n and_o god_n blessing_n on_o they_o be_v too_o weak_a mean_n to_o provide_v sufficient_o for_o themselves_o and_o child_n they_o can_v shift_v and_o shark_n project_n and_o undermine_v screw_v themselves_o into_o testament_n and_o deceive_v trust_n buy_v over_o their_o brother_n head_n that_o employ_v they_o for_o himself_o and_o use_v all_o their_o wit_n and_o fraudulent_a device_n to_o compass_v a_o estate_n and_o root_v their_o possession_n in_o it_o for_o ever_o mad_o suppose_v to_o establish_v their_o generation_n by_o those_o way_n for_o which_o god_n never_o fail_v as_o he_o every_o where_o threaten_v to_o weed_v they_o or_o their_o posterity_n out_o of_o the_o inheritance_n so_o purchase_v it_o be_v his_o glory_n ever_o to_o destroy_v the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o wise_a and_o to_o ruin_v the_o house_n build_v in_o fraud_n or_o on_o the_o ruin_n of_o other_o for_o the_o hope_n of_o the_o wicked_a say_v job_n be_v as_o the_o spider_n web_n cunning_o spin_v out_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o labour_n all_o night_n and_o sudden_o sweep_v away_o in_o the_o morning_n what_o faith_n then_o be_v there_o in_o this_o or_o indeed_o what_o be_v it_o else_o but_o a_o wild_a branch_n of_o mere_a gentilism_n and_o infidelity_n if_o not_o absolute_a atheism_n for_o do_v he_o true_o believe_v god_n or_o his_o commination_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a one_o that_o love_v his_o child_n so_o well_o can_v run_v so_o direct_a a_o course_n to_o destroy_v they_o but_o assure_o he_o do_v not_o believe_v and_o whatsoever_o we_o pretend_v yet_o for_o the_o most_o part_n we_o secret_o say_v in_o our_o heart_n with_o that_o fool_n in_o the_o psalm_n if_o not_o there_o be_v no_o god_n yet_o at_o least_o there_o be_v no_o knowledge_n in_o the_o believe_v the_o best_a of_o you_o all_o will_v find_v even_o this_o infidelity_n lurk_v in_o they_o for_o be_v thou_o absolute_o assure_v in_o thy_o soul_n of_o the_o omniscience_n and_o omnipresence_n of_o the_o lord_n do_v thou_o faithful_o believe_v that_o he_o be_v every_o where_o and_o behold_v every_o action_n and_o operation_n of_o thou_o though_o never_o so_o secret_a that_o he_o be_v about_o thy_o path_n and_o about_o thy_o bed_n and_o spy_v out_o all_o thy_o way_n and_o see_v thy_o thought_n more_o clear_o than_o thou_o thyself_o how_o be_v it_o possible_a for_o thou_o in_o his_o presence_n and_o under_o those_o eye_n so_o often_o and_o deep_o to_o dissemble_v with_o thy_o brother_n with_o thy_o own_o heart_n and_o with_o god_n himself_o can_v thou_o imagine_v a_o window_n in_o thy_o bosom_n and_o thy_o neighbour_n permit_v now_o and_o then_o when_o thou_o dream_v not_o of_o it_o to_o look_v in_o upon_o thy_o impure_a and_o fraudulent_a thought_n and_o see_v how_o thy_o cogitation_n be_v busy_v how_o will_v thy_o soul_n shame_n and_o blush_v to_o be_v take_v tardy_a in_o such_o base_a and_o unworthy_a employment_n which_o yet_o thou_o can_v free_o exercise_v and_o continue_v without_o any_o trouble_n or_o interruption_n at_o all_o though_o god_n himself_o and_o his_o pure_a eye_n behold_v they_o whereunto_o thy_o breast_n be_v transparent_a as_o glass_n and_o more_o open_a than_o the_o air_n what_o do_v this_o show_n but_o that_o thou_o believe_v it_o not_o for_o to_o believe_v his_o presence_n true_o and_o so_o much_o contemn_v it_o be_v mere_o impossible_a it_o be_v beyond_o imagination_n to_o conceive_v be_v thy_o faith_n firm_a in_o this_o point_n how_o it_o possible_o can_v be_v that_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o his_o holy_a angel_n shall_v not_o deter_v thou_o not_o only_o from_o think_v but_o from_o act_v those_o secret_a work_n of_o darkness_n which_o the_o come_n in_o but_o of_o a_o little_a child_n can_v utter_o interrupt_v and_o hinder_v of_o necessity_n thou_o must_v be_v drive_v to_o confess_v either_o that_o thy_o faith_n be_v asleep_a and_o thou_o do_v not_o believe_v it_o or_o thy_o reverence_n and_o die_v the_o soul_n of_o the_o receiver_n which_o must_v be_v make_v partaker_n or_o shall_v be_v make_v guilty_a either_o partaker_n of_o the_o virtue_n or_o guilty_a of_o the_o shed_n thereof_o to_o his_o endless_a destruction_n that_o receive_v it_o unworthy_o the_o guilt_n you_o have_v in_o the_o precedent_a verse_n he_o shall_v be_v guilty_a of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o the_o a_o man_n examine_v etc._n etc._n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n itself_o and_o a_o admission_n unto_o it_o hereafter_o at_o this_o time_n only_o of_o the_o preparation_n that_o shall_v go_v before_o it_o wherein_o you_o may_v consider_v 1._o the_o act_n wherein_o it_o consist_v examination_n and_o then_o the_o object_n of_o that_o act_n himself_o let_v a_o man_n etc._n etc._n but_o we_o shall_v that_o preparation_n which_o be_v necessary_a for_o the_o make_n and_o constitute_v of_o a_o worthy_a receiver_n 3._o we_o will_v show_v that_o the_o best_a mean_n to_o attain_v unto_o this_o due_a preparation_n or_o qualification_n be_v the_o study_n and_o knowledge_n of_o ourselves_o and_o our_o own_o way_n 4._o because_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n be_v deceitful_a above_o all_o thing_n and_o we_o be_v all_o apt_a to_o deceive_v ourselves_o in_o judge_v of_o ourselves_o that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o superficial_a view_n but_o a_o strict_a examination_n that_o must_v give_v the_o just_a and_o the_o same_o author_n elsewhere_o affirm_v that_o nothing_o be_v available_a like_o faith_n when_o it_o be_v work_v work_v by_o love_n which_o be_v ever_o impatient_a and_o restless_a till_o it_o be_v a_o liar_n say_v st._n john_n and_o sure_o he_o that_o say_v he_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o yet_o forsake_v not_o his_o sin_n lie_v as_o loud_o and_o do_v but_o abuse_v his_o own_o soul_n vain_o dream_v of_o faith_n when_o he_o have_v but_o the_o shadow_n of_o it_o without_o truth_n or_o substance_n and_o will_v be_v find_v at_o last_o but_o in_o that_o poor_a man_n case_n who_o dream_v all_o night_n of_o treasure_n and_o in_o the_o morning_n when_o he_o awake_v be_v not_o worth_a a_o farthing_n with_o that_o church_n in_o the_o revelation_n they_o have_v a_o name_n that_o they_o live_v and_o conceit_n they_o be_v rich_a whenas_o there_o it_o be_v say_v they_o be_v blind_a and_o poor_a and_o naked_a and_o miserable_a and_o shall_v so_o understand_v themselves_o in_o the_o end_n for_o
