faith_n answ_n true_o it_o be_v presumpion_n in_o many_o they_o mistake_v themselves_o but_o in_o other_o it_o be_v true_a faith_n and_o god_n delight_v in_o it_o and_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o this_o it_o do_v draw_v the_o heart_n to_o god_n and_o the_o soul_n never_o find_v such_o a_o prevalent_a way_n to_o overcome_v those_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o it_o as_o to_o exercise_v their_o faith_n in_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n i_o beseech_v you_o mark_v the_o difference_n between_o presumption_n and_o faith_n in_o christ_n presumption_n will_v trust_v in_o god_n mercy_n notwithstanding_o their_o sin_n but_o that_o do_v indeed_o foment_n their_o sin_n and_o make_v they_o secure_a in_o their_o sin_n make_v they_o the_o more_o secure_a in_o their_o sin_n but_o now_o when_o the_o soul_n shall_v by_o the_o true_a geminine_a act_n of_o faith_n rest_n in_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o corruption_n if_o it_o be_v right_a such_o a_o soul_n feel_v no_o mean_n in_o the_o world_n of_o great_a efficacy_n to_o cure_v and_o prevail_v against_o corruption_n then_o this_o to_o trust_v in_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o corruption_n and_o if_o thou_o find_v it_o thus_o thou_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o fear_v trust_v in_o god_n grace_n with_o confidence_n for_o it_o be_v that_o which_o be_v well_o please_v unto_o god_n and_o that_o weary_v himself_o and_o yet_o the_o more_o he_o work_v the_o more_o grievous_a it_o be_v unto_o he_o for_o he_o find_v no_o strength_n come_v but_o strength_n weary_v rather_o his_o strength_n wear_v a_o way_n and_o no_o strength_n come_v in_o to_o assist_v he_o and_o yet_o his_o work_n be_v as_o strong_a as_o it_o be_v that_o work_n must_v needs_o be_v burdensome_a so_o those_o that_o be_v mere_o legal_a they_o go_v on_o still_o in_o duty_n and_o the_o work_n be_v still_o as_o strong_a but_o they_o be_v weak_a many_o a_o man_n when_o he_o first_o set_v upon_o a_o work_n be_v cold_a and_o benumb_v burr_n when_o he_o continue_v in_o the_o work_n he_o get_v warmth_n and_o then_o it_o be_v not_o so_o burdensome_a unto_o he_o but_o if_o he_o continue_v in_o the_o work_n and_o be_v cold_a and_o cold_a this_o be_v very_o tedious_a to_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o mere_a legal_a way_n conscience_n put_v they_o upon_o it_o at_o first_o and_o they_o go_v to_o duty_n with_o some_o vigour_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o grow_v more_o weary_a and_o the_o work_n be_v more_o tedious_a and_o yet_o conscience_n put_v they_o upon_o asmuch_o work_n as_o at_o first_o when_o a_o man_n have_v be_v at_o work_n and_o grow_v weary_a and_o desire_v ease_n and_o a_o cruel_a taskmaster_n shall_v come_v and_o tell_v he_o there_o must_v be_v no_o decrease_n of_o your_o work_n nor_o no_o increase_n of_o your_o strength_n this_o must_v needs_o be_v tedious_a thus_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n conscience_n put_v upon_o they_o as_o much_o work_n when_o they_o be_v weary_a and_o tire_v as_o at_o first_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o work_n of_o sanctification_n &_o legal_a performance_n though_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v hard_o at_o first_o yet_o while_o the_o soul_n set_v upon_o they_o there_o come_v in_o strength_n and_o the_o more_o work_v the_o more_o strength_n they_o do_v not_o spend_v their_o strength_n and_o throw_v it_o away_o and_o grow_v more_o weary_a afterward_o then_o at_o first_o but_o the_o more_o they_o have_v experience_n of_o the_o way_n the_o more_o strength_n they_o have_v they_o grow_v warm_a at_o their_o work_n and_o be_v warm_a they_o get_v further_o and_o further_a strength_n and_o it_o grow_v easy_a unto_o they_o but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o one_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o mere_a legal_a way_n some_o have_v be_v seven_o year_n in_o a_o profesion_n of_o religion_n and_o make_v conscience_n of_o their_o duty_n yet_o after_o seven_o year_n spend_v their_o heart_n no_o more_o mortify_v then_o at_o first_o and_o they_o have_v get_v no_o more_o strength_n then_o at_o first_o their_o lust_n be_v less_o mortify_v and_o their_o strength_n be_v less_o than_o at_o first_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n it_o fare_v with_o they_o as_o with_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n when_o they_o be_v go_v to_o canaan_n they_o have_v go_v a_o pretty_a way_n and_o make_v some_o progress_n but_o then_o they_o fall_v into_o discontent_n when_o they_o find_v a_o little_a discouragement_n and_o upon_o that_o they_o be_v bring_v back_o again_o and_o wander_v forty_o year_n up_o and_o down_o keep_v they_o from_o thievery_n drunkenness_n swear_v and_o the_o like_a argument_n that_o the_o heathen_a have_v skill_n of_o may_v keep_v they_o from_o those_o thing_n but_o the_o saint_n believer_n that_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n they_o have_v high_a argument_n they_o behold_v he_o with_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n and_o so_o they_o come_v to_o have_v power_n against_o we_o have_v pray_v and_o according_a to_o thy_o promise_n that_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n amen_o when_o you_o conclude_v your_o prayer_n with_o amen_o it_o be_v a_o word_n that_o be_v use_v for_o faith_n and_o it_o be_v the_o expression_n of_o faith_n after_o we_o have_v make_v our_o prayer_n and_o that_o be_v the_o meaning_n here_o therefore_o all_o the_o promise_n in_o he_o be_v yea_o they_o be_v make_v in_o christ_n and_o affirm_v in_o christ_n as_o certain_a therefore_o in_o he_o let_v they_o be_v amen_o unto_o the_o soul_n let_v they_o be_v as_o firm_a and_o certain_a thing_n unto_o we_o for_o we_o to_o rest_v upon_o unto_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n by_o we_o and_o thereby_o shall_v we_o glorify_v god_n you_o have_v so_o many_o precious_a promise_n in_o christ_n the_o soul_n of_o a_o believer_n more_o than_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n those_o that_o be_v exercise_v in_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o grow_v more_o abundant_o in_o sanctification_n than_o other_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v channel_n not_o only_o of_o mercy_n for_o our_o salvation_n but_o of_o holiness_n for_o our_o sanctification_n and_o for_o that_o you_o have_v a_o most_o excellent_a scripture_n 2._o cor._n 7.1_o have_v therefore_o these_o promise_n dear_o belove_v let_v we_o cleanse_v ourselves_o from_o all_o filthiness_n of_o flesh_n the_o flesh_n but_o that_o be_v not_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o will_v not_o take_v more_o liberty_n thereby_o but_o see_v we_o have_v such_o promise_n say_v he_o let_v we_o cleanse_v ourselves_o from_o all_o filthiness_n filthiness_n can_v stand_v with_o believe_v of_o promise_n and_o mark_v he_o say_v from_o all_o filthiness_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o of_o the_o spirit_n so_o that_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o you_o to_o say_v you_o have_v as_o good_a a_o heart_n towards_o god_n as_o any_o other_o i_o thank_v god_n my_o heart_n be_v right_a my_o spirit_n be_v right_a i_o but_o you_o must_v cleanse_v from_o all_o filthiness_n of_o the_o flesh_n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o spirit_n and_o these_o promise_n if_o you_o have_v the_o right_a use_n of_o they_o they_o will_v be_v mighty_a cleanse_n and_o mark_v from_o all_o filthiness_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o cleanse_v from_o some_o gross_a filthiness_n that_o be_v that_o you_o do_v not_o live_v in_o the_o grost_a sin_n that_o other_o of_o the_o world_n live_v in_o and_o that_o your_o neighbour_n live_v in_o that_o you_o be_v not_o whoremunger_n drunkard_n cheater_n prophaner_n of_o the_o saboth_n and_o the_o like_a but_o these_o promise_n will_v cleanse_v from_o all_o filthiness_n that_o be_v there_o shall_v be_v no_o filthiness_n that_o shall_v stick_v to_o you_o as_o to_o the_o wicked_a and_o ungodly_a but_o it_o will_v cleanse_v gradual_o by_o degree_n from_o all_o filthiness_n of_o
the_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n or_o of_o spirit_n not_o to_o make_v you_o make_v conscience_n of_o wicked_a action_n but_o cleanse_v you_o from_o your_o very_a thought_n these_o promise_n will_v cleanse_v from_o the_o filthiness_n of_o the_o flesh_n i_o perhaps_o they_o may_v a_o little_a serve_v the_o turn_n for_o they_o i_o but_o from_o the_o filthiness_n of_o the_o spirit_n the_o filthiness_n of_o the_o thought_n the_o filthiness_n of_o the_o affection_n those_o inward_a spiritual_a wickedness_n of_o pride_n malice_n and_o the_o like_a may_v be_v you_o will_v count_v it_o a_o vild_a thing_n to_o be_v accuse_v of_o whordom_n the_o filthiness_n of_o the_o flesh_n i_o but_o what_o say_v you_o to_o the_o filthiness_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o pride_n malice_n distrust_n earthly_a mindedness_n and_o such_o like_a these_o promise_n be_v to_o cleanse_v from_o the_o filthiness_n of_o the_o spirit_n aswell_o as_o of_o the_o flesh_n and_o then_o perfect_a holiness_n in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n it_o make_v they_o fear_n god_n more_o and_o then_o it_o perfect_v holiness_n such_o a_o one_o as_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v content_a with_o no_o measure_n of_o holiness_n but_o grow_v high_a and_o high_a till_o he_o come_v to_o perfection_n here_o you_o see_v the_o use_n of_o promise_n what_o a_o cleanse_v nature_n promise_v have_v world_n by_o lust_n and_o not_o only_o escape_v the_o corruption_n of_o the_o world_n that_o be_v do_v not_o live_v so_o wicked_o as_o other_o do_v but_o come_v to_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n through_o these_o promise_n so_o that_o christ_n be_v the_o rest_n of_o sanctification_n because_o in_o he_o all_o promise_n be_v make_v they_o have_v a_o mighty_a cleanse_v virtue_n christ_n and_o from_o christ_n the_o holy_a ghost_n never_o come_v to_o sanctify_v any_o but_o the_o member_n of_o jesus_n christ_n for_o he_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o father_n and_o never_o come_v to_o any_o but_o to_o the_o member_n of_o christ_n in_o this_o work_n of_o sanctification_n there_o be_v some_o common_a gift_n of_o god_n spirit_n that_o the_o heathen_n have_v but_o for_o this_o gift_n of_o true_a holiness_n it_o be_v only_o in_o the_o member_n of_o christ_n that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v come_v into_o last_o christ_n be_v our_o sanctification_n by_o his_o kingly_a power_n sway_v his_o sceptre_n in_o our_o heart_n and_o rule_v there_o subdue_a our_o lust_n as_o a_o king_n subdue_v rebel_n and_o walk_v and_o govern_v the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n christ_n do_v exercise_v a_o kingly_a power_n when_o any_o soul_n do_v believe_v when_o christ_n come_v into_o any_o heart_n he_o come_v into_o the_o heart_n to_o exercise_v a_o kingly_a power_n there_o to_o set_v up_o his_o throne_n in_o a_o kingly_a manner_n and_o by_o this_o he_o come_v to_o sanctify_v the_o heart_n and_o give_v rest_n and_o as_o in_o a_o kingdom_n there_o be_v mutiny_n sedition_n and_o the_o like_a so_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o sinner_n there_o be_v mutiny_n and_o sedition_n even_o against_o god_n himself_o but_o now_o whenas_o the_o king_n send_v forth_o power_n that_o very_a power_n prevail_v against_o all_o thing_n if_o it_o prevail_v in_o a_o way_n of_o justice_n all_o thing_n be_v bring_v into_o right_a and_o due_a order_n capacity_n of_o the_o soul_n with_o heavenly_a consolation_n and_o that_o bear_v out_o any_o trouble_n or_o affliction_n whatsoever_o and_o thus_o there_o be_v peace_n and_o rest_n unto_o the_o soul_n chap._n xlvi_o contain_v the_o conclusion_n of_o the_o last_o doctrine_n in_o the_o two_o former_a chapter_n show_v how_o unbeseeming_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v for_o a_o believer_n to_o be_v trouble_v exercise_v faith_n or_o else_o thou_o charge_v christ_n with_o unfaithfulness_n now_o if_o thou_o have_v not_o rest_n which_o way_n will_v thou_o have_v it_o fall_v oh_o let_v it_o fall_v upon_o thy_o unbelieved_a heart_n let_v it_o fall_v upon_o this_o that_o thou_o do_v not_o renew_v thy_o act_n in_o come_v to_o christ_n for_o it_o be_v not_o mean_v of_o come_v to_o christ_n at_o the_o first_o but_o of_o renew_v the_o act_n of_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o this_o exhortation_n belong_v to_o godly_a man_n and_o woman_n that_o have_v already_o come_v to_o christ_n by_o faith_n i_o say_v it_o in_o stormy_a cloudy_a weather_n there_o be_v no_o use_n of_o it_o and_o do_v thou_o make_v no_o more_o use_n of_o thy_o faith_n then_o of_o the_o sun_n dyal_a in_o thy_o garden_n to_o show_v thou_o how_o it_o be_v with_o thou_o in_o the_o day_n of_o prosperity_n but_o the_o truth_n of_o thy_o faith_n shall_v be_v a_o dyal_a to_o make_v thou_o know_v how_o it_o be_v between_o god_n and_o thy_o soul_n in_o a_o cloudy_a day_n and_o therefore_o you_o have_v now_o hear_v where_o the_o rest_n in_o regard_n of_o outward_a affliction_n lie_v oh_o do_v you_o repair_v hither_o for_o rest_n you_o vex_v and_o fret_v and_o trouble_v yourselves_o why_o because_o you_o have_v not_o as_o other_o other_o can_v have_v rich_a table_n fine_a house_n and_o accommodation_n and_o all_o thing_n for_o their_o content_n in_o this_o world_n but_o know_v that_o now_o the_o lord_n have_v present_v to_o you_o a_o way_n how_o to_o have_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n in_o time_n of_o poverty_n labour_n to_o know_v jesus_n christ_n that_o be_v make_v poor_a for_o you_o there_o be_v as_o plain_a a_o way_n for_o you_o to_o come_v to_o christ_n as_o for_o the_o rich_a in_o the_o world_n and_o christ_n will_v be_v as_o ready_a to_o entertain_v you_o as_o the_o rich_a it_o be_v likely_a that_o all_o your_o endeavour_n may_v come_v to_o help_v you_o so_o forward_o as_o to_o make_v you_o rich_a in_o this_o world_n i_o but_o to_o give_v rest_n in_o this_o world_n nothing_o can_v do_v it_o but_o your_o come_n to_o christ_n and_o above_o all_o this_o may_v serve_v to_o help_v we_o to_o lay_v up_o against_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n that_o however_o thing_n go_v in_o this_o world_n yet_o you_o may_v have_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n in_o christ_n chap._n xlvii_o show_v that_o believer_n be_v often_o under_o inward_a affliction_n and_o spiritual_a desertion_n i_o shall_v now_o speak_v of_o the_o rest_n that_o christ_n give_v unto_o the_o soul_n in_o regard_n of_o inward_a affliction_n those_o such_o darkness_n of_o spirit_n though_o they_o be_v believer_n &_o have_v interest_n in_o christ_n yet_o they_o may_v be_v leave_v for_o a_o time_n by_o god_n so_o as_o their_o spirit_n will_v be_v extreme_o afflict_v with_o sorrow_n and_o fear_v and_o trouble_v because_o of_o god_n absence_n from_o they_o and_o indeed_o there_o be_v no_o affliction_n like_a to_o this_o affliction_n there_o be_v no_o condition_n so_o restless_a as_o this_o condition_n be_v now_o this_o be_v that_o that_o every_o one_o be_v not_o acquaint_v withal_o carnal_a people_n think_v that_o these_o affliction_n be_v only_a conceit_n imagination_n and_o melancholy_a but_o the_o saint_n know_v what_o these_o affliction_n be_v that_o they_o be_v the_o most_o real_a affliction_n in_o the_o world_n these_o spiritual_a desertion_n for_o god_n to_o withdraw_v himself_o from_o his_o people_n we_o read_v of_o such_o a_o affliction_n that_o a_o godly_a man_n be_v
of_o the_o father_n and_o thorough_o plead_v their_o cause_n four_o in_o thy_o spiritual_a desertion_n thou_o must_v look_v up_o to_o christ_n to_o seek_v the_o fulfil_n of_o that_o promise_n of_o he_o that_o he_o make_v to_o his_o disciple_n to_o send_v to_o they_o the_o comforter_n when_o christ_n be_v to_o leave_v his_o disciple_n he_o say_v be_v of_o good_a cheer_n i_o will_v send_v the_o comforter_n to_o you_o and_o therefore_o be_v of_o good_a cheer_n christ_n do_v comfort_v his_o disciple_n against_o his_o absence_n he_o be_v to_o go_v from_o they_o and_o leave_v they_o in_o tell_v they_o he_o will_v send_v the_o comforter_n to_o they_o that_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v come_v so_o much_o the_o more_o full_o and_o he_o shall_v manifest_v i_o unto_o you_o now_o plead_v this_o promise_n of_o the_o lord_n christ_n in_o the_o time_n of_o spiritual_a desertion_n and_o say_v oh_o bless_a redeemer_n be_v thou_o careful_a of_o thy_o disciple_n that_o when_o thou_o be_v to_o leave_v they_o in_o regard_n of_o bodily_a presence_n that_o thou_o will_v send_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o shall_v come_v to_o testify_v of_o thou_o and_o reveal_v thou_o to_o they_o affliction_n to_o want_v thou_o o_o bless_a redeemer_n in_o a_o spiritual_a way_n then_o to_o want_v thy_o bodily_a presence_n and_o therefore_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o need_n that_o the_o comforter_n shall_v come_v in_o now_o to_o supply_v the_o want_n of_o spiritual_a presence_n then_o bodily_a presence_n five_o in_o the_o time_n of_o spiritual_a desertion_n if_o thou_o can_v find_v no_o evidence_n at_o all_o nothing_o at_o all_o to_o satisfy_v thy_o soul_n then_o go_v to_o christ_n in_o the_o very_a same_o way_n that_o thou_o wente_v to_o he_o at_o first_o better_a to_o do_v so_o then_o to_o lie_v grovel_v and_o sink_v under_o thy_o burden_n if_o thou_o think_v that_o yet_o thou_o have_v nothing_o that_o all_o be_v nothing_o all_o be_v lose_v and_o the_o like_a go_v spiritual_a affliction_n and_o desertion_n they_o spend_v so_o much_o time_n in_o look_v after_o old_a evidence_n whereas_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o may_v get_v new_a one_o soon_o than_o the_o old_a one_o as_o sometime_o a_o man_n may_v spend_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o time_n in_o look_v after_o a_o old_a key_n of_o a_o box_n then_o in_o make_v a_o new_a one_o he_o may_v make_v a_o new_a key_n with_o a_o great_a deal_n less_o trouble_n and_o it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o much_o prejudice_n to_o he_o to_o have_v a_o new_a key_n make_v as_o to_o look_v the_o old_a one_o he_o may_v look_v up_o and_o down_o and_o spend_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o time_n that_o may_v be_v more_o worth_a then_o to_o make_v a_o new_a one_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o soul_n in_o time_n of_o trouble_n and_o under_o spiritual_a desertion_n it_o be_v look_v about_o for_o its_o old_a evidence_n and_o to_o such_o and_o such_o work_n of_o grace_n and_o can_v find_v they_o and_o be_v pore_v and_o can_v be_v at_o quiet_a till_o it_o can_v find_v those_o former_a sign_n and_o mark_n that_o he_o have_v before_o i_o say_v such_o and_o such_o may_v soon_o get_v new_a one_o then_o find_v the_o old_a one_o if_o a_o man_n have_v write_n perhaps_o he_o can_v find_v such_o a_o writing_n he_o may_v be_v at_o less_o charge_n to_o have_v new_a one_o write_v over_o again_o then_o to_o look_v the_o old_a one_o so_o thou_o want_v the_o evidence_n of_o thy_o grace_n and_o can_v not_o find_v they_o i_o say_v renew_v thy_o grace_n upon_o christ_n again_o and_o thou_o may_v get_v thy_o evidence_n new_o write_v over_o again_o and_o have_v it_o with_o less_o cost_n then_o to_o look_v after_o the_o old_a one_o six_o be_v sure_a in_o time_n of_o thy_o desertion_n to_o keep_v good_a thought_n of_o god_n though_o thou_o have_v no_o comfort_n in_o they_o for_o the_o present_a yet_o believe_v it_o there_o be_v comfort_n in_o christ_n and_o whatever_o become_v of_o thou_o acknowledge_v christ_n to_o be_v faithful_a christ_n be_v to_o be_v thy_o lord_n and_o thy_o king_n and_o let_v thy_o heart_n love_v he_o and_o strive_v at_o the_o least_o â—o_o do_v so_o it_o be_v true_a the_o sense_n of_o his_o love_n will_v inflame_v love_n again_o yet_o at_o that_o time_n when_o thou_o can_v not_o have_v the_o sense_n of_o his_o love_n yet_o resolve_v to_o love_v he_o and_o love_v his_o way_n you_o know_v christ_n where_o or_o may_v be_v the_o tempter_n will_v come_v to_o a_o poor_a desert_a soul_n as_o he_o do_v to_o christ_n in_o matth._n 4._o when_o christ_n be_v a_o hungry_a then_o come_v the_o tempter_n to_o he_o and_o say_v command_v that_o these_o stone_n be_v make_v bread_n as_o if_o the_o tempter_n shall_v say_v thus_o do_v do_v not_o you_o see_v how_o your_o father_n have_v forsake_v you_o do_v the_o devil_n when_o the_o lord_n be_v withdraw_v from_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o a_o desert_a condition_n then_o come_v the_o devil_n to_o draw_v the_o soul_n to_o unlawful_a
