body_n and_o a_o member_n of_o some_o society_n now_o the_o question_n that_o concern_v he_o as_o a_o member_n of_o a_o society_n be_v of_o three_o sort_n according_a to_o three_o distinct_a kind_n of_o society_n for_o every_o man_n be_v either_o a_o member_n of_o a_o family_n or_o of_o the_o church_n or_o of_o the_o commonwealth_n and_o answerable_o some_o question_n concern_v man_n as_o a_o member_n of_o a_o family_n some_o as_o he_o be_v a_o member_n of_o the_o church_n some_o as_o he_o be_v a_o member_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n in_o a_o word_n therefore_o all_o question_n touch_v man_n may_v be_v reduce_v to_o three_o general_a head_n the_o first_o whereof_o be_v concern_v man_n simple_o consider_v as_o he_o be_v a_o man_n the_o second_o touch_v man_n as_o he_o stand_v in_o relation_n to_o god_n the_o three_o concern_v man_n as_o he_o be_v a_o member_n of_o one_o of_o the_o three_o society_n that_o be_v either_o of_o the_o family_n or_o of_o the_o church_n or_o of_o the_o commonwealth_n qvestion_n of_o the_o first_o sort_n concern_v man_n simple_o consider_v in_o himself_o as_o he_o be_v a_o man_n be_v especial_o three_o the_o first_o what_o a_o man_n must_v do_v that_o he_o may_v come_v into_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o be_v save_v the_o second_o how_o he_o may_v be_v assure_v in_o conscience_n of_o his_o own_o salvation_n the_o three_o how_o he_o may_v recover_v himself_o when_o he_o be_v distress_v or_o fall_v of_o these_o in_o order_n chap._n v._n of_o the_o first_o main_a question_n touch_v man._n i._o question_n what_o must_v a_o man_n do_v that_o he_o may_v come_v into_o god_n favour_n and_o be_v save_v for_o answer_n to_o this_o question_n some_o ground_n must_v be_v lay_v down_o beforehand_o the_o first_o be_v this_o that_o we_o must_v consider_v and_o remember_v how_o and_o by_o what_o mean_n god_n bring_v any_o man_n to_o salvation_n for_o look_v how_o god_n save_v other_o so_o he_o that_o will_v know_v how_o to_o be_v save_v must_v use_v the_o mean_n whereby_o god_n save_v they_o sect._n 1_o in_o the_o work_n and_o effect_v of_o man_n salvation_n man_n ordinary_o there_o be_v two_o special_a action_n of_o god_n the_o give_v of_o the_o first_o grace_n and_o after_o that_o the_o give_v of_o the_o second_o the_o former_a of_o these_o two_o work_n have_v x._o several_a action_n i._o god_n give_v man_n the_o outward_a mean_n of_o salvation_n special_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o with_o it_o he_o send_v some_o outward_a or_o inward_a cross_n to_o break_v and_o sub_fw-la due_n the_o stubbornness_n of_o our_o nature_n that_o it_o may_v be_v make_v pliable_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n this_o we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o example_n of_o the_o jailor_n act._n 16._o and_o of_o the_o of_o conscience_n let_v it_o be_v demand_v of_o the_o atheist_n whereof_o do_v conscience_n bear_v witness_n he_o can_v deny_v but_o of_o all_o his_o particular_a action_n i_o ask_v then_o against_o primitive_a church_n christian_n do_v first_o feast_n and_o at_o the_o end_n of_o their_o feast_n receive_v the_o lord_n supper_n and_o if_o receiver_n bring_v with_o they_o attentive_a mind_n reverend_a and_o sober_a heart_n it_o matter_n not_o whether_o they_o come_v fast_v or_o not_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n stand_v not_o in_o meat_n and_o drink_v as_o paul_n say_v rom._n 14._o 17._o the_o question_n be_v because_o man_n think_v when_o they_o go_v to_o law_n that_o they_o do_v not_o forgive_v ans._n there_o be_v three_o kind_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o revenge_n of_o the_o penalty_n and_o of_o judgement_n ofrevenge_n when_o man_n be_v content_a to_o lay_v aside_o all_o hatred_n and_o requital_n of_o evil_a of_o penalty_n when_o be_v wrong_v they_o be_v content_a to_o put_v the_o matter_n up_o and_o not_o proceed_v to_o revenge_v by_o inflict_a punishment_n of_o judgement_n when_o a_o man_n be_v willing_a to_o esteem_v and_o judge_v thing_n bad_o do_v as_o well_o do_v and_o for_o the_o former_a adoration_n in_o general_a be_v a_o outward_a worship_n signify_v and_o testify_v be_v the_o inward_a worship_n of_o the_o heart_n more_o special_o by_o it_o we_o must_v conceive_v the_o bow_v of_o the_o head_n and_o knee_n the_o bend_n and_o prostrate_v of_o the_o body_n the_o lift_v up_o of_o the_o hand_n eye_n and_o such_o like_a adoration_n be_v twofold_a religious_a or_o civil_a religious_a adoration_n be_v that_o worship_n of_o god_n in_o which_o religion_n and_o godliness_n be_v exercise_v express_v and_o signify_v in_o it_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n always_o join_v together_o and_o yet_o distinct_o to_o be_v consider_v the_o first_o and_o principal_a be_v the_o foundation_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n be_v the_o intention_n of_o the_o mind_n question_n about_o adoration_n be_v two_o 1._o question_n to_o what_o thing_n be_v adoration_n due_a and_o in_o what_o manner_n ans._n we_o must_v distinguish_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v and_o they_o be_v of_o three_o sort_n or_o rank_n in_o the_o first_o rank_n come_v god_n the_o creator_n in_o the_o second_o the_o creature_n in_o the_o three_o the_o work_n of_o the_o creature_n for_o the_o first_o adoration_n that_o be_v due_a to_o god_n the_o creator_n must_v not_o be_v social_a for_o we_o be_v not_o god_n mate_n and_o companion_n but_o only_o religious_a yea_o all_o religious_a worship_n be_v due_a to_o god_n and_o to_o he_o alone_o which_o i_o prove_v thus_o the_o devil_n when_o he_o tempt_v our_o saviour_n desire_v no_o more_o of_o he_o but_o the_o prostrate_v of_o his_o body_n yet_o upon_o this_o ground_n that_o he_o be_v the_o giver_n and_o disposer_n of_o all_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o earth_n but_o christ_n deny_v it_o and_o answer_n thou_o shall_v worship_v of_o the_o son_n with_o the_o jew_n thus_o do_v we_o worship_v not_o the_o true_a god_n but_o a_o idol_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o god_n be_v so_o to_o be_v conceive_v of_o we_o as_o he_o have_v manifest_v himself_o in_o his_o own_o word_n and_o no_o otherwise_o if_o otherwise_o god_n be_v not_o conceive_v but_o a_o idol_n or_o fiction_n of_o the_o brain_n and_o the_o adoration_n be_v not_o do_v to_o god_n but_o to_o the_o idol_n second_o to_o worship_n god_n in_o at_z or_o before_o a_o image_n be_v idolatry_n &_o superstition_n and_o god_n so_o worship_v be_v make_v a_o idol_n for_o will_v be_v worship_v or_o look_v to_o be_v hear_v when_o god_n will_v not_o be_v hear_v be_v a_o idolater_n again_o god_n express_o forbid_v the_o the_o worship_n of_o his_o majesty_n in_o at_z or_o they_o ans._n they_o be_v the_o enemy_n of_o god_n and_o accurse_a of_o he_o therefore_o no_o honour_n or_o service_n belong_v unto_o they_o by_o his_o will_n and_o appointment_n and_o for_o that_o very_a cause_n we_o be_v to_o have_v no_o deal_n with_o they_o at_o all_o nay_o we_o be_v utter_o to_o renounce_v and_o abandon_v whatsoever_o thing_n come_v from_o the_o devil_n or_o his_o instrument_n as_o namely_o all_o spell_n charm_n enchantment_n etc._n etc._n which_o serve_v to_o the_o work_n of_o wonder_n and_o yet_o have_v no_o such_o virtue_n give_v they_o from_o god_n for_o that_o end_n either_o by_o creation_n nature_n word_n or_o institution_n now_o concern_v the_o good_a angel_n if_o they_o do_v now_o appear_v unto_o we_o and_o we_o have_v certain_a knowledge_n thereof_o we_o may_v adore_v they_o but_o how_o only_o with_o civil_a and_o social_a worship_n for_o so_o
pray_v and_o hear_v the_o word_n cheerful_o when_o their_o stomach_n be_v empty_a these_o person_n may_v eat_v in_o the_o day_n of_o a_o solemn_a fast_o so_o that_o they_o observe_v the_o caveat_n before_o remember_v it_o be_v not_o with_o we_o in_o these_o country_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o jew_n they_o can_v fast_v one_o two_o or_o three_o day_n together_o without_o any_o inconvenience_n we_o can_v do_v the_o like_a and_o the_o reason_n be_v plain_a man_n that_o live_v in_o those_o hot_a country_n have_v cold_a stomach_n and_o so_o may_v fast_v the_o long_o but_o in_o cold_a climate_n such_o as_o we_o be_v in_o respect_n of_o they_o man_n be_v of_o hot_a stomach_n be_v not_o able_a to_o continue_v fast_v so_o long_o as_o they_o sect._n 3_o the_o three_o point_n be_v concern_v the_o
