the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n and_o if_o he_o leave_v unto_o we_o no_o more_o but_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n sincere_a and_o sound_a we_o care_v not_o much_o for_o all_o other_o thing_n this_o be_v therefore_o a_o singular_a promise_n and_o consolation_n that_o the_o church_n and_o the_o word_n shall_v endure_v to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n not_o by_o the_o counsel_n or_o belove_v this_o peace_n of_o the_o heart_n be_v our_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n which_o we_o have_v in_o this_o life_n for_o it_o be_v a_o incomparable_a treasure_n in_o comparison_n whereof_o all_o obtain_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n hope_v also_o by_o these_o comfort_n to_o overcome_v the_o terror_n of_o god_n wrath_n &_o heal_v the_o wound_n of_o conscience_n and_o this_o be_v always_o the_o inclination_n of_o man_n nature_n to_o follow_v his_o own_o way_n and_o to_o forsake_v the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n therefore_o david_n say_v some_o forsake_v the_o temple_n &_o abhor_v the_o mount_n zion_n but_o i_o abide_v in_o the_o simple_a way_n of_o faith_n &_o true_a religion_n which_o be_v the_o healthful_a hill_n that_o the_o lord_n himself_o have_v appoint_v in_o that_o he_o call_v it_o the_o healthful_a hill_n or_o the_o hill_n from_o whence_o help_n and_o succour_n come_v he_o reject_v and_o condemn_v all_o other_o hill_n which_o have_v a_o show_n of_o help_n and_o succour_v such_o i_o mean_v as_o be_v visible_o wrought_v in_o the_o service_n and_o honour_n do_v to_o the_o idol_n but_o true_a help_n they_o give_v none_o so_o the_o jew_n say_v that_o baal_n show_v more_o present_a help_n in_o the_o temple_n then_o god_n so_o they_o cry_v in_o jeremy_n we_o will_v do_v sacrifice_n to_o the_o queen_n of_o heaven_n but_o thy_o commandment_n we_o will_v idolatry_n have_v great_a success_n time_n yet_o be_v it_o but_o for_o a_o time_n so_o say_v king_n achas_n the_o god_n of_o the_o king_n of_o the_o syrian_n do_v help_v they_o therefore_o will_v i_o also_o seek_v their_o favour_n and_o they_o shall_v help_v i_o but_o what_o say_v the_o scripture_n the_o god_n of_o syria_n be_v the_o destruction_n both_o of_o they_o and_o of_o all_o israel_n and_o comfort_n he_o lift_v they_o up_o to_o wealth_n and_o dignity_n he_o make_v they_o to_o swell_v with_o pride_n and_o glory_n comfort_n but_o how_o long_o for_o the_o time_n of_o this_o frail_a &_o brickle_a life_n but_o in_o death_n he_o do_v not_o only_o forsake_v they_o but_o drive_v they_o down_o to_o the_o deep_a pit_n of_o hell_n therefore_o whatsoever_o worldly_a and_o visible_a comfort_n and_o delight_n the_o heart_n of_o man_n can_v here_o desire_v or_o enjoy_v he_o find_v they_o uncertain_a and_o short_o must_v forsake_v they_o and_o yet_o withal_o they_o bring_v unspeakable_a torment_n and_o affliction_n of_o mind_n and_o lead_v man_n into_o such_o blindness_n that_o they_o have_v no_o regard_n of_o god_n at_o all_o who_o do_v not_o delight_v his_o true_a worshipper_n with_o vain_a pleasure_n of_o this_o world_n which_o endure_v but_o a_o moment_n but_o replenish_v they_o with_o everlasting_a joy_n for_o thus_o he_o say_v i_o will_v see_v you_o again_o and_o your_o the_o which_o we_o have_v experience_n in_o this_o life_n that_o be_v to_o say_v a_o good_a conscience_n a_o joyful_a heart_n a_o invincible_a faith_n which_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v against_o all_o storm_n of_o tentation_n against_o poverty_n envy_n reproach_n and_o slander_v of_o the_o world_n against_o error_n and_o false_a doctrine_n and_o even_o against_o death_n itself_o thus_o we_o must_v learn_v to_o know_v the_o nature_n of_o faith_n namely_o that_o it_o be_v a_o will_n or_o knowledge_n or_o a_o expectation_n rest_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o word_n show_v and_o set_v forth_o unto_o we_o invisible_a help_n and_o yet_o to_o be_v look_v for_o as_o certain_a and_o unfallible_a and_o although_o we_o think_v it_o long_o before_o they_o come_v yet_o will_v they_o come_v when_o it_o shall_v be_v most_o to_o our_o joy_n &_o comfort_n and_o this_o be_v it_o that_o these_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n do_v here_o express_v i_o lift_v up_o my_o eye_n to_o the_o hill_n mind_n be_v establish_v in_o god_n what_o my_o faith_n and_o hope_n be_v i_o will_v here_o say_v nothing_o albeit_o in_o these_o great_a danger_n i_o grant_v my_o mind_n be_v oftentimes_o trouble_v be_v feel_v which_o we_o now_o believe_v but_o because_o faith_n must_v go_v before_o feeling_n and_o experience_n and_o we_o must_v believe_v the_o word_n although_o we_o feel_v in_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o judgement_n never_o so_o much_o to_o the_o contrary_n as_o when_o our_o heart_n oppress_v with_o calamity_n do_v think_v god_n to_o be_v angry_a with_o we_o not_o to_o care_v for_o we_o unto_o every_o particular_a person_n and_o to_o the_o whole_a common_a wealth_n which_o be_v refresh_v therewith_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o dew_n of_o heaven_n whereby_o all_o thing_n do_v prosper_v and_o flourish_v for_o like_v as_o by_o the_o dew_n all_o thing_n that_o grow_v upon_o the_o earth_n do_v spring_n and_o increase_v even_o so_o small_a thing_n through_o peace_n &_o concord_n do_v grow_v to_o great_a increase_n contrariwise_o like_v as_o in_o the_o time_n of_o great_a heat_n &_o drought_n all_o thing_n wither_v away_o &_o perish_v so_o war_n sedition_n &_o excellent_a commendation_n wherewith_o he_o so_o beautify_v and_o extol_v peace_n and_o with_o this_o commendation_n ought_v the_o heart_n of_o all_o man_n to_o be_v stir_v up_o to_o the_o love_n of_o peace_n be_v since_o they_o hear_v that_o god_n will_v dwell_v with_o such_o prince_n such_o pastor_n and_o such_o people_n as_o love_v peace_n and_o defend_v the_o same_o it_o follow_v then_o that_o where_o the_o enemy_n of_o peace_n be_v and_o such_o as_o delight_v in_o unnecessary_a war_n as_o be_v those_o monster_n which_o be_v idle_o and_o wicked_o bring_v up_o in_o the_o court_n of_o prince_n and_o courtly_a life_n together_o with_o the_o profane_a &_o godless_a multitude_n there_o dwell_v the_o devil_n with_o his_o angel_n and_o there_o have_v god_n appoint_v malediction_n death_n and_o destruction_n there_o be_v a_o certain_a vehemency_n in_o this_o word_n life_n or_o life_n in_o the_o plural_a number_n for_o it_o signify_v all_o kind_n of_o life_n as_o the_o priest_n the_o levite_n the_o faithful_a the_o magistrate_n artificer_n citizen_n husbandman_n etc_n etc_n as_o if_o he_o say_v all_o state_n of_o life_n shall_v be_v bless_v with_o
the_o more_o to_o esteem_v they_o when_o we_o have_v they_o and_o to_o be_v the_o more_o thankful_a to_o god_n for_o the_o same_o yet_o must_v we_o learn_v sure_o to_o trust_v and_o undoubted_o believe_v that_o they_o will_v come_v verse_n 3._o he_o will_v not_o suffer_v thy_o foot_n to_o slip_v for_o he_o that_o keep_v israel_n will_v not_o slumber_v this_o verse_n depend_v upon_o those_o that_o go_v before_o for_o the_o prophet_n because_o he_o begin_v with_o a_o exhortation_n to_o faith_n now_o go_v about_o as_o it_o be_v with_o promise_n lord_n to_o move_v and_o exhort_v the_o faithful_a to_o hold_v fast_o this_o confidence_n &_o trust_n in_o the_o help_n &_o succour_v of_o the_o lord_n and_o very_o necessary_a it_o be_v for_o we_o to_o exhort_v and_o stir_v up_o not_o only_o other_o but_o ourselves_o also_o because_o of_o the_o present_a danger_n and_o affliction_n for_o see_v the_o thing_n which_o discomfort_v we_o be_v present_a and_o they_o which_o comfort_v we_o be_v absent_a therefore_o so_o long_o as_o the_o present_a thing_n which_o vex_v we_o do_v endure_v it_o be_v needful_a that_o we_o shall_v be_v stir_v up_o with_o the_o word_n and_o exhortation_n to_o perseverance_n and_o patience_n for_o this_o experience_n of_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n must_v be_v join_v with_o doctrine_n &_o exhâ—â—â—â—tion_n for_o our_o sight_n be_v so_o dim_a that_o we_o can_v not_o see_v these_o inviâ—â—â—â—â—_n thing_n and_o the_o end_n of_o affliction_n therefore_o the_o flesh_n ever_o sâ—â—keth_v mean_n how_o it_o may_v be_v deliver_v and_o when_o it_o can_v see_v nonâ—â—as_v the_o carnal_a eye_n can_v never_o see_v god_n marvellous_a help_n &_o deliverance_n then_o be_v it_o miserable_o vex_v and_o torment_v and_o can_v find_v noâ—est_v nor_o quietness_n we_o have_v need_v therefore_o of_o exhortation_n out_o 〈◊〉_d the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o this_o streatnes_n of_o our_o heart_n may_v be_v dilate_v and_o enlarge_v which_o he_o alone_o can_v do_v that_o see_v the_o end_n of_o our_o tentation_n we_o must_v hear_v what_o his_o word_n say_v and_o not_o what_o our_o own_o heart_n say_v which_o only_o see_v and_o fele_v the_o beginning_n of_o tentation_n and_o affliction_n but_o the_o end_n thereof_o it_o can_v not_o see_v therefore_o the_o holy_a ghost_n here_o amplify_v and_o enlarge_v the_o matter_n that_o the_o exhortation_n may_v be_v the_o more_o effectual_a and_o here_o be_v first_o to_o be_v note_v that_o if_o the_o contrary_n be_v not_o that_o be_v to_o say_v no_o tentation_n feel_v or_o peril_n to_o be_v fear_v then_o be_v this_o exhortation_n but_o in_o vain_a for_o if_o tentation_n shall_v have_v a_o end_n as_o soon_o as_o it_o begin_v or_o if_o as_o soon_o as_o we_o feel_v any_o lack_n god_n shall_v give_v we_o that_o we_o desire_v wherefore_o then_o shall_v god_n promise_v any_o thing_n therefore_o neither_o be_v doctrine_n necessary_a in_o those_o thing_n that_o we_o know_v before_o neither_o exhortation_n when_o we_o be_v out_o of_o danger_n and_o feel_v no_o tentation_n therefore_o where_o the_o prophet_n say_v he_o will_v not_o suffer_v thy_o foot_n to_o slip_v he_o plain_o show_v what_o be_v the_o state_n of_o the_o afflict_a for_o when_o they_o feel_v themselves_o to_o be_v in_o danger_n through_o the_o grievousness_n of_o tentation_n their_o heart_n be_v heavy_a and_o careful_a lest_o they_o shall_v perish_v and_o be_v forsake_v of_o the_o lord_n for_o ever_o here_o have_v they_o need_v therefore_o of_o exhortation_n that_o their_o faith_n fail_v not_o or_o be_v not_o utter_o quench_v for_o reason_n can_v judge_v no_o other_o wise_a but_o that_o a_o man_n be_v in_o this_o case_n be_v clean_o reject_v &_o forsake_v of_o god_n and_o after_o his_o own_o sense_n feel_v that_o to_o be_v true_a which_o a_o certain_a soldier_n be_v wont_a to_o say_v that_o there_o be_v none_o which_o suffer_v more_o misery_n or_o be_v in_o great_a danger_n than_o such_o as_o serve_v god_n and_o their_o prince_n faithful_o here_o be_v now_o no_o succour_n but_o to_o fly_v to_o the_o word_n of_o faith_n and_o first_o this_o word_n pronounce_v that_o all_o they_o which_o will_v live_v a_o godly_a life_n in_o christ_n jesus_n shall_v suffer_v trouble_n and_o affliction_n it_o set_v forth_o christ_n for_o a_o ensample_n who_o by_o the_o cross_n enter_v into_o glory_n it_o tell_v we_o that_o we_o must_v be_v make_v like_o unto_o his_o image_n that_o be_v we_o must_v suffer_v with_o he_o if_o we_o look_v to_o be_v glorify_v with_o he_o then_o we_o see_v that_o trouble_n and_o cross_n be_v prepare_v for_o we_o it_o show_v moreover_o what_o be_v to_o be_v do_v and_o what_o remedy_n be_v to_o be_v fight_v in_o such_o affliction_n affliction_n even_o to_o resort_v to_o the_o word_n to_o harken_v to_o the_o word_n to_o rest_v in_o the_o word_n and_o the_o promise_n it_o promise_v that_o tentation_n shall_v not_o continue_v with_o we_o for_o ever_o as_o our_o heart_n do_v judge_v but_o rather_o it_o tell_v we_o that_o it_o be_v but_o momentane_z and_o short_a and_o christ_n compare_v the_o affliction_n of_o the_o faithful_a to_o the_o travel_n of_o a_o woman_n where_o death_n and_o life_n be_v join_v together_o as_o near_o as_o may_v be_v for_o she_o that_o even_o now_o see_v nothing_o but_o death_n and_o despair_v of_o the_o life_n both_o of_o herself_o and_o of_o her_o child_n as_o soon_o as_o the_o child_n be_v bear_v forget_v all_o her_o sorrow_n past_a saint_n paul_n say_v the_o affliction_n of_o this_o life_n be_v not_o to_o be_v compare_v to_o the_o glory_n which_o shall_v be_v reveil_v upon_o us._n follow_v this_o judgement_n of_o the_o word_n thou_o must_v follow_v and_o not_o thine_o own_o sense_n which_o so_o judge_v of_o the_o cross_n and_o affliction_n that_o of_o a_o molehill_n or_o rather_o of_o a_o mote_n it_o make_v a_o great_a mountain_n so_o blind_a be_v reason_n and_o so_o unable_a to_o judge_v in_o matter_n of_o faith_n for_o that_o which_o god_n count_v but_o as_o a_o moment_n a_o drop_n a_o sparkle_n reason_n judge_v to_o be_v everlasting_a a_o huge_a sea_n and_o a_o terrible_a fire_n but_o thou_o will_v say_v i_o find_v and_o feel_v it_o so_o to_o be_v what_o then_o do_v thou_o feel_v or_o do_v god_n see_v and_o know_v more_o perfect_o think_v thou_o we_o must_v not_o judge_v therefore_o according_a to_o our_o own_o feel_n but_o according_a to_o that_o which_o the_o word_n of_o god_n pronounce_v and_o judge_v or_o rather_o god_n himself_o in_o his_o word_n the_o story_n do_v record_v that_o when_o julianus_n persecute_v athanasius_n and_o threaten_v his_o destruction_n athanasius_n athanasius_n so_o little_o regard_v the_o danger_n thereof_o that_o he_o liken_v the_o same_o to_o a_o cloud_n which_o the_o sun_n by_o little_a and_o little_o consume_v to_o nothing_o what_o can_v be_v speak_v more_o contemptuous_o of_o that_o outrageous_a cruelty_n attempt_v by_o such_o a_o mighty_a monarch_n and_o head_n of_o the_o roman_a empire_n which_o rather_o may_v have_v be_v compare_v to_o a_o huge_a sea_n or_o a_o terrible_a fire_n but_o as_o athanasius_n say_v and_o believe_v even_o so_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v for_o julianus_n be_v slay_v short_o after_o and_o so_o athanasius_n escape_v the_o danger_n by_o who_o example_n let_v we_o learn_v how_o to_o judge_v of_o our_o own_o trouble_n and_o peril_n and_o look_v to_o the_o word_n of_o the_o promiser_n that_o we_o depend_v not_o upon_o ourselves_o and_o our_o own_o sense_n but_o upn_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o lord_n death_n pestilence_n famine_n hatred_n of_o the_o world_n and_o slander_v with_o such_o like_a may_v well_o be_v resemble_v to_o a_o horrible_a tempest_n and_o here_o if_o we_o follow_v reason_n we_o be_v go_v but_o we_o must_v lift_v up_o our_o eye_n to_o the_o hill_n and_o harken_v to_o this_o voice_n i_o be_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n therefore_o magnify_v my_o word_n my_o help_n and_o my_o succour_n thus_o if_o we_o do_v then_o begin_v we_o to_o contemn_v that_o which_o to_o we_o before_o seem_v so_o huge_a and_o terrible_a then_o the_o word_n &_o promise_n begin_v to_o kindle_v in_o our_o heart_n and_o bring_v such_o strength_n and_o courage_n that_o we_o be_v able_a to_o say_v now_o be_v it_o never_o so_o huge_a a_o tempest_n never_o so_o terrible_a a_o storm_n let_v it_o come_v these_o thing_n and_o earnest_o think_v upon_o they_o so_o this_o psalm_n be_v a_o prayer_n against_o the_o mighty_a rich_a and_o wealthy_a of_o the_o world_n which_o either_o cruel_o molest_v and_o vex_v or_o proud_o deride_v and_o contemn_v the_o godly_a as_o the_o last_o verse_n do_v declare_v and_o these_o be_v not_o only_o such_o as_o prefer_v wicked_a doctrine_n superstition_n &_o idolatry_n before_o the_o undefiled_a word_n of_o god_n but_o even_o such_o also_o as_o glory_v in_o the_o word_n and_o sound_a doctrine_n and_o will_v be_v count_v lover_n &_o favourer_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o partaker_n with_o we_o of_o the_o name_n and_o glory_n of_o christ_n of_o such_o there_o be_v a_o great_a number_n amongst_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n for_o they_o have_v the_o law_n sacrifice_n and_o ceremony_n institute_v by_o moses_n according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n they_o have_v great_a plenty_n of_o prophet_n and_o godly_a teacher_n yet_o how_o they_o use_v they_o the_o story_n do_v declare_v when_o elisha_n send_v the_o son_n of_o a_o prophet_n unto_o jehu_n 9_o the_o other_o say_v wherefore_o come_v this_o mad_a fellow_n unto_o thou_o the_o psalm_n also_o &_o ghost_n in_o this_o psalm_n do_v teach_v they_o how_o to_o pray_v in_o these_o distress_n they_o shall_v be_v hear_v and_o though_o they_o be_v here_o contemn_v and_o count_v the_o outsweping_n of_o the_o earth_n they_o shall_v be_v make_v glorious_a in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god._n verse_n 1._o i_o lift_v up_o my_o eye_n unto_o thou_o which_o dwell_v in_o the_o heaven_n this_o be_v a_o all_o everlasting_a incorruptible_a see_v all_o thing_n pierce_v all_o thing_n the_o prophet_n also_o call_v god_n here_o the_o inhabior_n of_o heaven_n to_o signify_v that_o the_o earth_n be_v full_a of_o the_o proud_a and_o scornful_a and_o that_o the_o godly_a be_v tread_v under_o foot_n of_o those_o that_o dwell_v upon_o the_o earth_n and_o be_v count_v the_o ouâ—swepings_n of_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o he_o see_v none_o beside_o the_o lord_n and_o inhabior_n of_o heaven_n of_o who_o he_o may_v look_v for_o help_n and_o succour_v the_o great_a danger_n whereof_o the_o prophet_n complain_v be_v herein_o express_v in_o that_o he_o look_v about_o on_o every_o side_n and_o seek_v for_o succour_n can_v find_v none_o to_o help_v he_o but_o only_o the_o inhabior_n of_o heaven_n these_o thing_n make_v the_o tentation_n much_o more_o grievous_a and_o terrible_a and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v with_o such_o word_n in_o his_o tentation_n as_o perhaps_o he_o at_o that_o time_n do_v not_o perfect_o understand_v as_o saint_n paul_n also_o say_v we_o understand_v not_o what_o we_o pray_v the_o spirit_n know_v and_o understand_v what_o these_o word_n mean_v but_o man_n can_v not_o be_v great_a and_o mighty_a yet_o god_n be_v more_o mighty_a this_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o prophet_n in_o this_o verse_n and_o albeit_o the_o word_n be_v but_o simple_a as_o you_o see_v yet_o be_v they_o full_a of_o consolation_n to_o he_o that_o believe_v the_o spirit_n which_o minister_v these_o word_n and_o stir_v up_o these_o groan_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o afflict_a know_v with_o what_o majesty_n and_o power_n they_o
captivity_n or_o captive_n of_o zion_n we_o shall_v be_v like_o they_o that_o dream_n by_o zion_n be_v signify_v that_o people_n which_o have_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o come_n of_o christ_n for_o compare_v to_o a_o most_o joyful_a &_o pleasant_a dream_n they_o that_o further_o listen_v to_o enlarge_v this_o inestimable_a benefit_n of_o christ_n or_o this_o deliverance_n have_v here_o occasion_n to_o amplify_v the_o same_o first_o by_o the_o person_n of_o the_o redeemer_n then_o by_o the_o person_n of_o the_o redeem_v by_o their_o former_a state_n and_o misery_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o devil_n of_o the_o hugeness_n and_o horror_n of_o death_n of_o the_o force_n of_o sin_n etc_n etc_n for_o these_o thing_n have_v whole_o devour_v all_o mankind_n &_o can_v not_o be_v the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n be_v well_o know_v but_o by_o experience_n and_o practice_v it_o be_v not_o so_o well_o know_v for_o our_o infirmity_n be_v such_o that_o we_o be_v rather_o touch_v with_o the_o sense_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n then_o with_o the_o laughter_n and_o joy_n that_o be_v the_o sweet_a comfort_n and_o joyful_a promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o to_o speak_v of_o myself_o and_o of_o my_o own_o feel_n the_o redemption_n and_o life_n give_v by_o christ_n do_v not_o so_o much_o pierce_v my_o heart_n as_o it_o be_v terrify_v with_o one_o word_n or_o one_o cogitation_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n the_o cause_n whereof_o be_v for_o that_o we_o can_v not_o sufficient_o learn_v this_o difference_n between_o the_o law_n and_o the_o away_o all_o heaviness_n for_o to_o they_o as_o be_v say_v pertain_v the_o voice_n of_o laughter_n and_o joy_n and_o not_o the_o voice_n of_o terror_n and_o heaviness_n and_o here_o also_o we_o find_v satan_n to_o be_v our_o deadly_a adversary_n which_o most_o subtle_o dispute_v with_o we_o touch_v the_o law_n and_o use_v such_o argument_n as_o we_o can_v not_o deny_v for_o when_o he_o lay_v unto_o we_o our_o sin_n we_o be_v constrain_v to_o confess_v and_o to_o acknowledge_v they_o which_o albeit_o we_o cover_v they_o some_o time_n before_o man_n our_o conscience_n as_o a_o thousand_o witness_n pronounce_v against_o we_o and_o will_v not_o suffer_v we_o to_o forget_v they_o or_o hide_v they_o whereof_o sometime_o arise_v also_o a_o doubt_v or_o mistrust_v even_o of_o holy_a work_n i_o speak_v nothing_o of_o those_o which_o be_v manifest_o wicked_a with_o these_o dart_v satan_n pierce_v and_o grievous_o wound_v the_o soft_a and_o tender_a heart_n only_o because_o
this_o distinction_n be_v not_o so_o well_o know_v by_o practice_n as_o it_o be_v by_o speculation_n practice_v for_o if_o we_o have_v this_o practice_n in_o deed_n we_o shall_v right_o discern_v between_o the_o law_n &_o the_o gospel_n also_o between_o the_o disciple_n of_o the_o law_n and_o of_o the_o gospel_n &_o beat_v back_o satan_n with_o this_o answer_n that_o like_o a_o lie_a spirit_n he_o seek_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o blind_a and_o deceive_v the_o heart_n with_o falsehood_n and_o lie_n for_o whereas_o hard_a and_o stony_a heart_n be_v those_o he_o do_v not_o kill_v or_o terrify_v but_o flatter_v and_o fill_v they_o with_o hope_n &_o fair_a promise_n which_o do_v not_o pertain_v to_o such_o heart_n contrariwise_o where_o as_o such_o tender_a and_o timorous_a heart_n be_v as_o be_v to_o much_o terrify_v already_o and_o therefore_o shall_v be_v confirm_v &_o raise_v up_o with_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n those_o heart_n satan_n most_o of_o all_o not_o only_o go_v about_o further_o to_o afflict_v and_o terrify_v but_o to_o beat_v they_o down_o also_o to_o utter_v discomfort_n wherefore_o the_o christian_a man_n must_v learn_v and_o labour_n by_o feeling_n and_o practice_n to_o make_v this_o distinction_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o say_v unto_o satan_n away_o from_o i_o satan_n with_o thy_o lie_n when_o i_o be_o void_a of_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n secure_a and_o hard_a heart_a then_o come_v and_o plead_v the_o law_n against_o i_o then_o will_v i_o hear_v thou_o for_o then_o that_o be_v the_o time_n to_o teach_v the_o law_n but_o since_o thou_o come_v now_o unto_o i_o with_o the_o law_n whereas_o my_o heart_n be_v terrify_v already_o with_o sin_n &_o death_n i_o will_v not_o hear_v thou_o for_o thy_o doctrine_n pertain_v not_o unto_o i_o but_o laughter_n and_o joy_n not_o terror_n and_o death_n so_o shall_v satan_n be_v answer_v when_o he_o go_v about_o to_o terrify_v we_o but_o by_o experience_n we_o feel_v that_o when_o most_o need_n be_v our_o heart_n be_v not_o able_a thus_o to_o answer_v although_o we_o have_v hear_v these_o thing_n before_o never_o so_o often_o the_o cause_n be_v this_o that_o albeit_o heaven_n be_v we_o and_o wide_a open_a for_o we_o yet_o such_o be_v our_o nature_n and_o such_o be_v our_o infirmity_n that_o all_o this_o can_v not_o make_v we_o so_o joyful_a as_o the_o gape_a gulf_n and_o horror_n of_o hell_n do_v terrify_v we_o so_o that_o one_o cogitation_n of_o our_o sin_n do_v more_o afflict_v we_o than_o all_o the_o teach_n and_o preach_v of_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n can_v comfort_v we_o wherefore_o we_o must_v earnest_o endeavour_n to_o learn_v this_o practice_n or_o at_o the_o least_o to_o attain_v to_o some_o knowledge_n thereof_o and_o raise_v up_o ourselves_o with_o these_o word_n that_o the_o gospel_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o laughter_n and_o joy_n which_o proper_o pertain_v to_o the_o captive_n that_o be_v to_o those_o that_o feel_v the_o captivity_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n to_o the_o fleshy_a and_o tender_a heart_n terrify_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o the_o wrath_n and_o judgement_n of_o god_n these_o be_v the_o disciple_n in_o who_o heart_n shall_v be_v plant_v laughter_n and_o joy_n and_o which_o only_o shall_v hear_v the_o voice_n of_o joy_n and_o gladness_n in_o the_o tabernacle_n of_o the_o righteous_a 117._o and_o that_o by_o the_o comprehend_v god_n by_o man_n speculation_n have_v horrible_o perish_v and_o if_o god_n through_o his_o inestimable_a mercy_n have_v not_o deliver_v i_o from_o this_o tentation_n i_o have_v also_o fall_v headlong_o into_o destruction_n albeit_o the_o prophet_n as_o i_o say_v make_v here_o no_o express_a mention_n of_o the_o temple_n prayer_n yet_o shall_v you_o see_v how_o in_o this_o psalm_n he_o wrap_v the_o promise_n concern_v christ_n for_o this_o be_v the_o whole_a argument_n of_o this_o psalm_n that_o there_o be_v no_o salvation_n no_o grace_n no_o justification_n but_o in_o that_o god_n which_o forgive_v sin_n and_o be_v this_o god_n any_o other_o than_o the_o same_o which_o say_v unto_o the_o serpent_n the_o seed_n of_o the_o woman_n shall_v bruise_v thy_o head_n therefore_o he_o take_v god_n here_o as_o a_o promise_n maker_n and_o show_v that_o christ_n be_v promise_v of_o the_o father_n to_o be_v a_o sacrifice_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o here_o the_o prophet_n set_v forth_o unto_o we_o a_o principal_a point_n of_o doctrine_n touch_v christian_n righteousness_n christian_a wisdom_n and_o the_o glory_n of_o christ_n these_o thing_n david_n treat_v of_o even_o then_o when_o the_o law_n be_v in_o his_o full_a strength_n and_o leap_v over_o the_o bound_n of_o the_o law_n into_o paradise_n or_o rather_o into_o the_o very_a heaven_n of_o grace_n &_o mercy_n for_o why_o shall_v i_o not_o
call_v grace_n heaven_n itself_o by_o the_o which_o we_o have_v a_o open_a passage_n unto_o heaven_n and_o the_o which_o we_o can_v never_o attain_v unto_o by_o the_o law_n by_o work_n or_o by_o our_o own_o endeavour_n but_o rather_o as_o a_o most_o large_a heaven_n it_o receive_v we_o beleve_v that_o by_o adoption_n we_o be_v make_v righteous_a before_o god_n through_o christ._n hereby_o we_o may_v see_v what_o the_o intent_n and_o purpose_n of_o the_o prophet_n be_v in_o this_o psalm_n namely_o to_o teach_v we_o the_o true_a way_n to_o righteousness_n life_n and_o salvation_n again_o to_o show_v we_o the_o way_n how_o to_o escape_v death_n sin_n and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o out_o of_o this_o life_n we_o may_v pass_v to_o life_n everlasting_a and_o in_o teach_v of_o these_o thing_n he_o show_v his_o own_o experience_n and_o lay_v open_a unto_o we_o his_o own_o heart_n which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v exercise_v and_o school_v with_o many_o tentation_n that_o so_o he_o may_v attain_v to_o this_o doctrine_n wherein_o he_o go_v about_o here_o to_o enstruct_v we_o also_o the_o sum_n whereof_o be_v that_o he_o rest_v whole_o in_o the_o hope_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o in_o the_o sure_a trust_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o his_o sin_n but_o these_o thing_n shall_v more_o clear_o appear_v hereafter_o in_o expound_v of_o the_o psalm_n verse_n 1._o out_o of_o the_o depth_n have_v i_o call_v unto_o thou_o oh_o lord_n it_o may_v seem_v that_o the_o prophet_n use_v here_o more_o word_n than_o need_v but_o he_o that_o consider_v well_o the_o cause_n which_o force_v he_o that_o god_n have_v not_o only_o forsake_v he_o but_o cast_v he_o away_o for_o ever_o hate_v &_o abhor_v he_o for_o his_o sin_n these_o tentation_n be_v much_o more_o terrible_a than_o those_o which_o man_n common_o fall_v into_o for_o they_o be_v not_o without_o danger_n of_o soul_n &_o eternal_a salvation_n therefore_o he_o use_v here_o this_o manner_n of_o speech_n say_v out_o of_o the_o depth_n i_o call_v unto_o thou_o etc_n etc_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v great_a be_v the_o trouble_n wherewith_o i_o be_o oppress_v for_o i_o feel_v my_o own_o sin_n and_o the_o just_a wrath_n of_o in_o deed_n untollerable_a when_o they_o feel_v themselves_o oppress_v with_o such_o horrible_a and_o hellish_a cogitation_n that_o they_o can_v see_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o they_o be_v cast_v away_o from_o god_n for_o ever_o they_o therefore_o that_o feel_v such_o bitter_a tentation_n god._n have_v here_o a_o example_n that_o david_n in_o himself_o feel_v and_o have_v experience_n of_o the_o like_a for_o it_o make_v the_o tentation_n much_o more_o grevous_a when_o they_o which_o be_v thus_o afflict_v feel_v that_o as_o to_o they_o it_o seem_v which_o none_o else_o do_v feel_v but_o they_o alone_o we_o must_v learn_v therefore_o that_o even_o the_o godly_a have_v ever_o suffer_v the_o same_o affliction_n and_o have_v be_v beat_v down_o even_o to_o death_n with_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n and_o sin_n as_o we_o may_v see_v here_o by_o the_o example_n of_o david_n cry_v even_o as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o hell_n and_o say_n out_o of_o the_o depth_n do_v i_o cry_v unto_o thou_o oh_o lord_n etc_n etc_n but_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o know_v that_o we_o sustain_v not_o these_o trouble_n and_o tentation_n alone_o but_o we_o must_v also_o learn_v the_o way_n whereby_o such_o as_o have_v suffer_v the_o like_a tentation_n have_v be_v raise_v up_o again_o and_o here_o you_o see_v david_n what_o he_o do_v you_o see_v whither_o he_o fly_v in_o his_o these_o bitter_a conflict_n for_o god_n will_v that_o in_o his_o church_n one_o shall_v help_v to_o comfort_v a_o other_o as_o member_n knit_v together_o in_o one_o body_n and_o he_o have_v promise_v that_o when_o two_o be_v gather_v together_o in_o his_o name_n he_o will_v be_v the_o third_o amongst_o they_o and_o doubtless_o nothing_o comfort_v a_o afflict_a conscience_n so_o much_o as_o to_o hear_v some_o godly_a brother_n declare_v out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o such_o terror_n and_o affliction_n be_v send_v of_o god_n not_o to_o destroy_v we_o but_o to_o humble_v we_o thereby_o to_o make_v we_o to_o acknowledge_v the_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n offer_v unto_o we_o and_o to_o receive_v the_o same_o with_o thankful_a heart_n but_o if_o in_o this_o distress_n we_o be_v destitute_a of_o the_o help_n of_o such_o faithful_a brethren_n we_o must_v then_o do_v as_o davidâ—id_v â—id_z in_o this_o place_n that_o be_v we_o must_v cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n &_o pray_v as_o this_o psalm_n teach_v we_o wherein_o you_o see_v such_o sorrowful_a and_o bitter_a sigh_n as_o lively_o express_v in_o david_n the_o great_a anguish_n of_o spirit_n from_o whence_o flow_v such_o plentiful_a matter_n and_o yet_o nothing_o superfluous_a as_o compel_v he_o not_o only_o to_o say_v that_o out_o of_o the_o deep_a depth_n he_o cry_v and_o call_v unto_o the_o lord_n but_o he_o put_v assail_v we_o as_o poverty_n sickness_n vexation_n of_o mind_n and_o such_o like_a we_o shall_v endure_v these_o tentation_n with_o faith_n &_o hope_n declare_v our_o patience_n towards_o god_n and_o hope_v for_o deliverance_n at_o his_o hand_n in_o his_o good_a time_n like_a as_o paul_n also_o write_v to_o the_o roman_n will_v we_o to_o rejoice_v even_o in_o our_o affliction_n and_o tentation_n for_o if_o god_n do_v not_o love_v we_o satan_n will_v not_o hate_v we_o if_o we_o be_v not_o partaker_n of_o life_n our_o enemy_n will_v not_o persecute_v we_o with_o death_n so_o those_o which_o be_v most_o just_a and_o holy_a because_o they_o hold_v fast_o the_o hope_n of_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n satan_n tempt_v most_o of_o all_o which_o the_o horror_n of_o sin_n yea_o and_o that_o in_o such_o wise_a as_o some_o time_n the_o take_n of_o one_o little_a cup_n of_o wine_n or_o of_o one_o word_n unadvised_o escape_v he_o make_v such_o a_o sin_n that_o baptism_n and_o all_o other_o gift_n and_o blessing_n which_o we_o possess_v seem_v now_o to_o stand_v we_o in_o no_o effect_n yea_o many_o time_n even_o those_o work_n which_o be_v good_a and_o holy_a he_o reprove_v and_o condemn_v as_o most_o wicked_a that_o he_o may_v bring_v the_o tender_a and_o timorous_a conscience_n into_o heaviness_n all_o these_o thing_n i_o say_v the_o godly_a do_v find_v and_o feel_v but_o if_o we_o shall_v follow_v our_o own_o sense_n and_o feel_n without_o the_o word_n how_o far_o and_o how_o miserable_o shall_v we_o wander_v from_o god_n thus_o satan_n deal_v not_o with_o the_o papist_n but_o go_v a_o contrary_a way_n to_o work_v excuse_v yea_o high_o commend_v in_o they_o most_o horrible_a and_o detestable_a crime_n as_o excellent_a virtue_n contrariwise_o we_o that_o desire_v and_o endeavour_n to_o live_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o moreover_o do_v teach_v the_o word_n sincere_o and_o faithful_o do_v often_o time_n suffer_v such_o trouble_n and_o vexation_n of_o conscience_n as_o if_o we_o live_v most_o wicked_o we_o must_v learn_v therefore_o out_o of_o the_o word_n that_o these_o thing_n hâ—ppen_v to_o the_o godly_a and_o must_v be_v overcome_v with_o such_o cogitation_n as_o the_o holy_a ghost_n here_o set_v forth_o teach_v so_o that_o we_o must_v thus_o think_v with_o ourselves_o i_o be_o call_v to_o the_o communion_n and_o partake_n of_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n and_o be_o baptize_v if_o in_o the_o common_a course_n of_o this_o life_n there_o be_v any_o offence_n by_o i_o commit_v there_o be_v mercy_n with_o the_o lord_n and_o in_o hope_n of_o this_o mercy_n i_o will_v let_v they_o pass_v moreover_o our_o doctrine_n although_o the_o world_n slander_v it_o and_o most_o spiteful_o persecute_v it_o must_v needs_o be_v true_a this_o doctrine_n after_o that_o we_o once_o believe_v in_o christ_n show_v unto_o we_o that_o with_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o mercy_n for_o god_n can_v not_o otherwise_o do_v but_o love_v we_o and_o bestow_v his_o benefit_n upon_o we_o now_o if_o the_o contrary_n appear_v to_o my_o sense_n and_o feeling_n i_o pass_v not_o neither_o if_o i_o shall_v die_v for_o it_o will_v i_o suffer_v this_o knowledge_n to_o be_v wrest_v from_o i_o but_o i_o steadfast_o believe_v that_o in_o the_o earth_n beneath_o and_o in_o the_o heaven_n above_o there_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o mercy_n thus_o to_o believe_v i_o be_o persuade_v not_o by_o feeling_n or_o by_o my_o own_o experience_n but_o by_o the_o word_n which_o say_v that_o with_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v mercy_n for_o i_o and_o all_o that_o do_v believe_v but_o for_o they_o that_o believe_v not_o there_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o wrath_n i_o will_v therefore_o overcome_v my_o tentation_n with_o the_o word_n and_o will_v write_v this_o promise_n in_o my_o heart_n that_o since_o i_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n &_o doubt_v not_o but_o that_o my_o sin_n be_v pardon_v through_o his_o blood_n i_o shall_v not_o be_v confound_v although_o all_o sense_n reason_n and_o experience_n will_v persuade_v and_o prove_v to_o i_o the_o contrary_n in_o myself_o i_o perceive_v nothing_o vut_o wrath_n there_o be_v mercy_n with_o the_o lord_n and_o with_o he_o be_v plentiful_a redemption_n redemption_n signify_v deliverance_n redemption_n and_o that_o general_a as_o well_o from_o the_o fault_n as_o from_o the_o punishment_n but_o special_o from_o the_o fault_n this_o redemption_n he_o call_v great_a and_o plentiful_a because_o the_o straitness_n of_o our_o heart_n be_v such_o that_o it_o can_v not_o comprehend_v the_o same_o for_o when_o we_o pray_v we_o so_o pray_v that_o it_o seem_v we_o will_v be_v content_a with_o a_o little_a so_o they_o that_o be_v in_o trouble_n &_o heaviness_n of_o mind_n do_v wish_n for_o the_o comfort_n and_o quietness_n of_o one_o day_n they_o that_o be_v in_o poverty_n will_v be_v glad_a to_o have_v bread_n for_o the_o present_a day_n us._n but_o god_n do_v not_o think_v this_o enough_o for_o he_o give_v above_o all_o that_o we_o can_v either_o conceive_v or_o ask_v and_o most_o true_a it_o be_v that_o we_o do_v not_o know_v how_o or_o what_o to_o ask_v and_o here_o i_o glad_o use_v my_o own_o experience_n for_o what_o and_o how_o much_o have_v he_o give_v unto_o i_o alone_o i_o wish_v no_o more_o but_o that_o the_o horrible_a abuse_n of_o the_o pope_n pardon_n may_v be_v take_v away_o but_o what_o a_o flood_n of_o wonderful_a and_o incomparable_a benefit_n have_v follow_v so_o be_v it_o always_o true_a that_o no_o man_n dare_v ask_v so_o will_v give_v we_o also_o more_o plentiful_o therefore_o the_o prophet_n say_v that_o this_o redemption_n be_v plentiful_a because_o it_o exceed_v our_o capacity_n for_o like_a as_o we_o slender_o believe_v so_o we_o slender_o ask_v but_o our_o father_n in_o heaven_n rain_v plentiful_o upon_o the_o little_a poor_a spark_n of_o our_o prayer_n and_o small_a drop_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o recompense_v his_o delay_n in_o give_v with_o great_a abundance_n for_o although_o we_o must_v still_o wait_v yet_o be_v our_o deliverance_n so_o much_o the_o great_a jacob_n which_o be_v israel_n
