till_o the_o light_n come_v in_o to_o manifest_v they_o when_o a_o man_n simile_n simile_n be_v in_o a_o deadly_a disease_n he_o may_v be_v void_a of_o all_o sense_n of_o it_o his_o life_n may_v be_v even_o drop_v out_o and_o his_o disease_n may_v rule_v in_o his_o body_n though_o he_o feel_v not_o any_o ache_n or_o pain_n for_o this_o unsensibleness_n depend_v upon_o the_o strength_n of_o his_o disease_n which_o have_v not_o only_o pierce_v his_o natural_a temper_n but_o his_o sense_n also_o so_o may_v a_o person_n be_v utter_o unsensible_a of_o sin_n for_o want_n of_o all_o save_a light_n and_o holy_a experience_n which_o arise_v from_o a_o new_a nature_n etc._n etc._n nay_o and_o as_o we_o see_v man_n in_o bondage_n and_o slavery_n when_o they_o simile_n simile_n be_v long_o in_o the_o same_o grow_v unsensible_a and_o the_o hand_n which_o be_v use_v to_o iron_n and_o nettle_n be_v not_o sensible_a of_o they_o so_o the_o frequent_a act_n of_o sin_n may_v suppress_v the_o inward_a sense_n of_o sin_v this_o be_v a_o easy_a observation_n and_o most_o true_a that_o much_o sin_v add_v to_o the_o strength_n of_o sin_n and_o disable_v the_o sense_n of_o a_o sinner_n sear_v his_o conscience_n and_o make_v his_o mind_n reprobate_a and_o as_o it_o be_v without_o sense_n act_n from_o a_o freedom_n from_o many_o course_n of_o sinful_a act_n 2._o another_o deceit_n may_v be_v and_o set_v up_o dominion_n so_o though_o in_o some_o man_n many_o sin_n do_v rule_v and_o in_o other_o some_o one_o only_a if_o the_o heart_n obey_v many_o or_o few_o or_o one_o it_o be_v enough_o to_o declare_v dominion_n subjection_n to_o no_o sin_n that_o indeed_o deny_v dominion_n but_o if_o the_o dispute_n be_v of_o many_o or_o few_o sin_n than_o this_o know_v that_o subjection_n to_o any_o aâ—gues_n dominion_n sin_n from_o the_o opposition_n against_o some_o sin_n and_o exemption_n from_o other_o great_a sin_n 3._o yet_o again_o another_o deceit_n may_v be_v not_o only_a sinful_a way_n and_o inclination_n for_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o all_o sin_n have_v a_o contrariety_n to_o the_o rule_n yet_o it_o be_v as_o true_a that_o some_o sin_n have_v a_o contrariety_n among_o themselves_o as_o prodigality_n to_o covetousness_n etc._n etc._n and_o a_o man_n may_v oppose_v the_o one_o not_o from_o a_o respect_n have_v to_o its_o natural_a vileness_n but_o from_o a_o respect_n have_v to_o his_o private_a and_o personal_a inclination_n this_o other_o be_v such_o a_o way_n of_o sin_v as_o like_v not_o but_o it_o will_v overthrow_v that_o other_o sin_n which_o he_o have_v set_v up_o and_o which_o he_o love_v and_o in_o which_o he_o be_v resolve_v to_o walk_v 4._o in_o a_o word_n it_o be_v not_o particular_a but_o universal_a opposition_n of_o single_a or_o multiply_v one_o or_o many_o as_o the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o the_o proud_a man_n hab._n 2._o that_o i_o say_v of_o this_o man_n his_o heart_n be_v not_o upright_o in_o he_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n which_o show_v great_a rottenness_n of_o heart_n one_o when_o any_o sin_n have_v our_o warrant_n seal_v with_o secret_a allowance_n another_z when_o we_o drive_v on_o the_o sin_n with_o a_o customary_a trade_n and_o continuance_n it_o may_v befall_v the_o most_o upright_a heart_n as_o it_o do_v the_o pest_n mettle_n blade_n it_o may_v be_v make_v to_o bow_v and_o bend_v yet_o there_o it_o stand_v not_o but_o return_n to_o its_o straitness_n again_o so_o even_o a_o upright_a person_n may_v step_v into_o a_o uneven_a path_n but_o there_o he_o walk_v not_o he_o quick_o return_v to_o the_o king_n highway_n into_o the_o way_n of_o obedience_n and_o righteousness_n but_o it_o be_v with_o a_o base_a heart_n as_o it_o be_v with_o base_a mettle_n it_o will_v easy_o bow_v and_o steadfast_o keep_v its_o crooked_a figure_n the_o bias_n draw_v that_o way_n the_o heart_n be_v set_v on_o sin_n and_o regard_v it_o do_v sin_n and_o allow_v it_o will_v sin_v and_o love_v it_o now_o this_o be_v a_o infallible_a sign_n of_o a_o false_a and_o hypocritical_a heart_n that_o it_o regard_v any_o know_a iniquity_n as_o david_n speak_v psal_n 66._o 28._o or_o that_o it_o have_v a_o wickedness_n as_o he_o speak_v psal_n 139._o 24._o service_n doubt_n
close_a unevenness_n and_o hypocritical_a practice_n of_o sin_n against_o thy_o better_a profession_n of_o holy_a walk_n what_o the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o the_o unjust_a gainer_n he_o get_v riches_n and_o not_o by_o right_a he_o shall_v leave_v they_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o his_o day_n and_o at_o the_o end_n he_o shall_v be_v a_o fool_n that_o say_v i_o of_o the_o hypocrite_n he_o heap_v up_o duty_n upon_o duty_n work_v upon_o work_n but_o the_o day_n of_o trial_n come_v and_o then_o he_o shall_v appear_v to_o be_v a_o fool_n ah_o vain_a man_n to_o think_v there_o be_v not_o a_o day_n for_o the_o discovery_n of_o secret_n or_o that_o there_o be_v not_o a_o god_n who_o search_v the_o heart_n and_o reins_o who_o greedy_o hunt_v after_o the_o applause_n and_o credit_n of_o man_n and_o decline_v the_o approbation_n of_o the_o great_a judge_n o_o when_o thy_o account_n be_v to_o be_v present_v and_o give_v up_o before_o the_o tribunal_n seat_n of_o the_o holy_a and_o true_a and_o terrible_a god_n and_o thou_o shall_v then_o say_v o_o lord_n all_o the_o outward_a good_a i_o do_v i_o do_v it_o only_o to_o get_v myself_o a_o name_n all_o the_o service_n of_o religion_n i_o labour_v in_o they_o only_o that_o man_n may_v think_v well_o of_o i_o some_o of_o thy_o precept_n i_o do_v like_a but_o other_o i_o do_v not_o care_n for_o because_o they_o thwart_v my_o end_n much_o private_a lust_n yet_o i_o blear_v their_o eye_n i_o yet_o wrest_v with_o my_o conscience_n i_o will_v not_o yet_o leave_v all_o my_o sin_n and_o now_o woe_n be_v i_o thou_o do_v love_v truth_n in_o the_o inward_a part_n this_o i_o know_v yet_o i_o play_v the_o hypocrite_n nay_o if_o more_o may_v be_v add_v then_o take_v this_o the_o lord_n god_n after_o death_n will_v shut_v the_o door_n against_o such_o foolish_a person_n who_o content_v themselves_o with_o lamp_n without_o oil_n and_o do_v cry_v lord_n lord_n have_v we_o not_o preach_v etc._n etc._n and_o hear_v thou_o in_o our_o street_n and_o yet_o be_v worker_n of_o iniquity_n look_v as_o the_o lord_n take_v notice_n of_o a_o man_n hypocrisy_n now_o so_o this_o people_n draw_v near_o unto_o i_o with_o their_o lip_n but_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o i_o so_o he_o will_v take_v notice_n of_o the_o hypocrite_n hereafter_o not_o only_o to_o shut_v heaven_n against_o he_o but_o to_o cast_v he_o into_o everlasting_a burn_n isa_n 33._o 14._o so_o then_o methinks_v here_o be_v motive_n enough_o to_o stir_v we_o up_o to_o be_v upright_o because_o else_o the_o lord_n regard_v we_o not_o neither_o person_n nor_o work_n yea_o his_o word_n condemn_v we_o and_o our_o conscience_n do_v condemn_v we_o we_o walk_v under_o a_o sentence_n and_o shall_v die_v under_o a_o curse_n and_o god_n will_v be_v against_o we_o too_o in_o judgement_n he_o will_v not_o know_v we_o but_o abominate_a we_o from_o his_o presence_n 2._o but_o then_o if_o you_o consider_v on_o the_o other_o side_n how_o acceptable_a god_n uprightness_n be_v very_o acceptable_a unto_o god_n a_o thing_n uprightness_n be_v to_o god_n what_o delight_n he_o take_v in_o suchperson_n how_o his_o covenant_n be_v with_o they_o and_o what_o infinite_a promise_n be_v their_o treasury_n how_o god_n will_v hear_v their_o prayer_n accept_v of_o their_o person_n pass_v over_o their_o weakness_n increase_v their_o blessing_n establish_v their_o comfort_n what_o defence_n and_o secret_a and_o strong_a and_o comfortable_a acquittance_n uprightness_n breed_v in_o the_o conscience_n what_o confidence_n it_o give_v in_o our_o access_n to_o god_n what_o solace_n under_o all_o our_o cross_n what_o peace_n and_o quietness_n and_o strength_n notwithstanding_o all_o contrary_a suggestion_n what_o boldness_n in_o death_n what_o ground_n to_o implead_v with_o god_n what_o a_o certainty_n of_o acceptance_n now_o and_o true_a glory_n hereafter_o o_o how_o may_v these_o thing_n work_v upon_o our_o heart_n to_o labour_v to_o be_v upright_o etc._n etc._n object_n but_o you_o will_v say_v now_o why_o what_o may_v we_o do_v to_o get_v uprightness_n and_o to_o maintain_v it_o sol._n now_o we_o come_v to_o the_o mean_n of_o uprightness_n for_o which_o mean_n mean_n take_v these_o particular_n into_o your_o consideration_n 1._o direction_n for_o the_o get_n of_o it_o 2._o direction_n for_o the_o preserve_n of_o it_o 3._o some_o other_o consideration_n and_o meditation_n for_o the_o it_o direction_n to_o get_v uprightness_n of_o heart_n go_v to_o god_n for_o it_o first_o i_o commend_v these_o thing_n unto_o you_o 1._o if_o ever_o you_o will_v have_v upright_a heart_n you_o must_v then_o go_v to_o god_n for_o they_o hypocrisy_n be_v a_o natural_a weed_n we_o need_v not_o go_v beyond_o ourselves_o to_o find_v a_o cause_n of_o it_o even_o a_o child_n be_v able_a to_o frame_v action_n to_o the_o eye_n of_o other_o but_o uprightness_n be_v a_o flower_n of_o heaven_n only_o that_o god_n who_o can_v make_v new_a be_v able_a to_o make_v the_o heart_n upright_o i_o pray_v you_o to_o consider_v that_o all_o the_o holy_a quality_n and_o tempet_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n come_v from_o no_o other_o spring_n than_o god_n grace_n none_o can_v bestow_v they_o but_o god_n and_o he_o can_v do_v it_o now_o the_o upright_a heart_n be_v a_o spring_n of_o the_o covenant_n jer._n 31._o 39_o i_o will_v give_v they_o one_o heart_n and_o one_o way_n that_o they_o may_v fear_v i_o for_o ever_o be_v there_o here_o a_o person_n this_o day_n who_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o guile_n of_o his_o spirit_n of_o the_o sol._n it_o matter_n not_o how_o much_o hypocrisy_n have_v be_v hatch_v within_o thou_o and_o act_v by_o thou_o heretofore_o if_o now_o thou_o come_v to_o be_v sensible_a of_o thy_o hypocrisy_n and_o to_o condemn_v it_o &_o to_o bewail_v it_o &_o to_o abhor_v it_o if_o former_a hypocrisy_n be_v now_o come_v to_o hearty_a conflict_n though_o be_v give_v out_o into_o many_o thought_n of_o self_n and_o base_a end_n yet_o be_v not_o dismay_v go_v to_o god_n he_o can_v subdue_v it_o and_o he_o can_v take_v out_o that_o guile_n of_o thy_o spirit_n and_o he_o can_v fashion_v a_o straitness_n and_o rightnesse_n of_o heavenly_a frame_n within_o thou_o he_o be_v able_a to_o make_v good_a whatsoever_o he_o have_v promise_v second_o if_o you_o will_v find_v uprightness_n in_o you_o then_o get_v a_o way_n get_v a_o predominat_fw-la love_n of_o god_n and_o his_o way_n exceed_a and_o predominate_a love_n of_o god_n and_o his_o way_n love_n be_v of_o great_a force_n and_o influence_n to_o a_o man_n way_n and_o action_n it_o be_v like_o the_o rudder_n which_o do_v master_n the_o ship_n in_o the_o motion_n it_o can_v turn_v and_o wind_v it_o any_o way_n so_o do_v love_n prevail_v with_o the_o soul_n it_o have_v a_o command_n over_o it_o about_o a_o man_n way_n and_o action_n if_o a_o man_n have_v a_o strong_a love_n of_o god_n if_o he_o do_v hearty_o and_o with_o great_a affection_n woman_n to_o her_o husband_n grow_v upon_o want_n of_o conjugal_a love_n it_o be_v the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n which_o draw_v a_o man_n so_o often_o aside_o which_o make_v he_o off_o and_o on_o and_o it_o be_v the_o love_n of_o sin_n which_o make_v a_o man_n so_o hypocritical_a if_o a_o man_n can_v love_v god_n above_o all_o he_o will_v delight_v
