companionship_n of_o the_o other_o and_o this_o be_v say_v brief_o of_o these_o three_o what_o this_o love_n be_v that_o christ_n speak_v of_o that_o it_o be_v cool_v and_o how_o namely_o by_o much_o iniquity_n in_o other_o object_n 1_o and_o although_o many_o may_v perhaps_o here_o object_n and_o say_v thus_o can_v such_o as_o have_v receive_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o glad_a tiding_n with_o he_o this_o begin_v to_o draw_v his_o heart_n towards_o paul_n which_o we_o know_v must_v needs_o be_v a_o great_a change_n from_o that_o which_o be_v before_o servant_n and_o by_o this_o we_o may_v mark_v the_o beauty_n of_o virtue_n and_o grace_n in_o god_n servant_n how_o great_o it_o move_v the_o heart_n even_o of_o wicked_a man_n sure_o if_o they_o be_v careful_a that_o their_o light_n may_v shine_v in_o good_a conversation_n among_o man_n they_o shall_v not_o a_o little_a provoke_v they_o out_o of_o their_o bad_a course_n and_o to_o be_v in_o love_n with_o a_o better_a i_o do_v not_o deny_v but_o it_o most_o move_v they_o when_o it_o bring_v any_o benefit_n to_o they_o as_o here_o paul_n love_n and_o care_n do_v to_o the_o jailor_n they_o have_v double_a force_n to_o work_v upon_o he_o and_o although_o it_o help_v much_o i_o grant_v to_o the_o further_o draw_v he_o on_o towards_o goodness_n yet_o that_o only_o be_v not_o to_o be_v see_v in_o he_o but_o that_o do_v beat_v into_o he_o a_o persuasion_n that_o he_o be_v a_o good_a man_n and_o be_v able_a to_o do_v he_o good_a also_o and_o therefore_o a_o little_a after_o he_o desire_v to_o know_v of_o he_o how_o he_o may_v be_v save_v so_o that_o kindness_n and_o harmelesnes_n and_o other_o fruit_n of_o love_n if_o they_o be_v more_o usual_o and_o plentiful_o show_v forth_o by_o christian_n they_o will_v undoubted_o pierce_v the_o heart_n of_o many_o wicked_a man_n and_o cause_v they_o to_o think_v that_o they_o be_v far_o from_o the_o course_n which_o they_o shall_v walk_v in_o for_o though_o many_o scorner_n and_o profane_a person_n do_v trample_v goodness_n and_o good_a man_n under_o their_o foot_n yet_o the_o beauty_n of_o piety_n and_o christianity_n do_v much_o move_v and_o avail_v with_o many_o as_o we_o see_v by_o peter_n word_n to_o christian_a woman_n where_o he_o say_v let_v the_o wife_n be_v subject_a to_o their_o husband_n 3.1_o that_o even_o they_o that_o obey_v not_o the_o word_n may_v without_o the_o word_n be_v win_v by_o the_o conversation_n of_o their_o wife_n but_o especial_o if_o god_n servant_n will_v as_o opportunity_n be_v offer_v show_v their_o love_n in_o seek_v to_o win_v they_o to_o god_n and_o to_o help_v they_o towards_o eternal_a life_n much_o more_o shall_v they_o persuade_v they_o to_o forsake_v their_o bad_a course_n and_o to_o embrace_v a_o better_a as_o our_o saviour_n christ_n talk_v with_o that_o woman_n of_o samaria_n bring_v she_o to_o repentance_n 4._o and_o this_o be_v say_v of_o the_o second_o mean_v of_o the_o conversion_n of_o the_o jailor_n though_o far_o off_o which_o as_o it_o be_v a_o degree_n before_o the_o former_a so_o they_o who_o be_v move_v as_o he_o be_v be_v sensible_o set_v forward_o as_o he_o be_v though_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o that_o many_o come_n thus_o far_o and_o further_o from_o their_o evil_a course_n may_v yet_o be_v far_o enough_o off_o from_o true_a conversion_n but_o let_v we_o hear_v the_o three_o mean_v apostle_n which_o the_o second_o now_o speak_v of_o procure_v and_o bring_v forth_o and_o that_o be_v a_o near_a degree_n to_o goodness_n than_o the_o former_a and_o this_o it_o be_v that_o he_o conceive_v so_o well_o of_o they_o of_o paul_n and_o silas_n i_o mean_v that_o for_o all_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o magistrate_n he_o bring_v they_o out_o of_o the_o prison_n and_o fall_v down_o before_o they_o in_o token_n of_o reverence_n to_o they_o and_o so_o fall_v to_o near_a acquaintance_n with_o they_o who_o be_v good_a man_n it_o give_v hope_n of_o his_o further_a good_a take_v by_o they_o and_o here_o i_o will_v stay_v a_o while_n to_o teach_v how_o we_o may_v profit_v by_o this_o to_o this_o end_n this_o i_o say_v servant_n that_o as_o his_o near_a cling_a and_o cleave_v to_o they_o be_v another_o mean_a to_o bring_v he_o to_o true_a conversion_n even_o so_o god_n use_v the_o familiarity_n and_o acquaintance_n that_o wicked_a man_n have_v with_o his_o servant_n to_o this_o end_n that_o they_o may_v distaste_v their_o former_a course_n and_o bring_v they_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n preach_v and_o so_o in_o time_n to_o be_v change_v thus_o many_o become_v believer_n in_o christ_n by_o company_n and_o acquaintance_n with_o preacher_n who_o be_v appoint_v by_o christ_n to_o be_v fisher_n of_o man_n do_v show_v the_o love_n to_o they_o 21.15_o that_o christ_n show_v to_o themselves_o before_o that_o if_o they_o be_v man_n of_o god_n indeed_o they_o will_v lay_v open_a to_o they_o their_o treasure_n which_o they_o have_v gather_v out_o of_o the_o hoard_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o impart_v the_o same_o unto_o they_o for_o although_o many_o of_o that_o profession_n i_o mean_v the_o ministry_n
be_v blind_a themselves_o in_o the_o mystery_n of_o salvation_n and_o other_o who_o have_v knowledge_n in_o the_o letter_n yet_o for_o want_v of_o love_n be_v unprofitable_a and_o rather_o puff_v up_o with_o their_o knowledge_n then_o careful_a to_o do_v good_a with_o it_o to_o the_o persuade_v of_o man_n to_o faith_n thereby_o yet_o they_o who_o god_n have_v true_o enlighten_v do_v far_o otherwise_o for_o they_o have_v daily_o before_o their_o eye_n the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n 21.15_o that_o as_o they_o love_v he_o they_o shall_v feed_v his_o lamb_n and_o his_o sheep_n subtlety_n of_o the_o wicked_a be_v not_o yet_o at_o those_o time_n grow_v to_o such_o a_o height_n to_o dismay_v the_o people_n in_o their_o first_o beginning_n but_o since_o those_o day_n some_o of_o they_o though_o seek_v to_o grow_v up_o in_o further_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n and_o grace_n and_o to_o bring_v on_o other_o by_o their_o example_n have_v meet_v with_o such_o discouragement_n that_o they_o have_v not_o answer_v i_o speak_v not_o of_o all_o particular_a person_n as_o many_o other_o have_v do_v to_o the_o hope_n that_o they_o give_v so_o long_o before_o by_o many_o degree_n but_o while_o i_o show_v how_o the_o jailor_n and_o many_o other_o have_v take_v so_o great_a good_a by_o the_o company_n and_o fellowship_n of_o god_n servant_n it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v pass_v by_o it_o how_o little_a use_v many_o make_v of_o such_o good_a mean_n now_o a_o day_n who_o although_o they_o dwell_v near_o godly_a preacher_n yea_o and_o be_v ready_a enough_o in_o civil_a manner_n to_o have_v their_o converse_v with_o they_o yet_o in_o thing_n pertain_v to_o god_n and_o to_o eternal_a life_n they_o have_v no_o appetite_n to_o they_o which_o i_o speak_v to_o their_o shame_n see_v so_o much_o good_a may_v be_v get_v thereby_o for_o what_o though_o they_o dwell_v near_o such_o and_o have_v thereby_o acquaintance_n with_o they_o yet_o many_o further_o off_o seek_v hearty_o to_o take_v good_a by_o they_o be_v in_o far_o better_a case_n and_o show_v themselves_o far_o wise_a because_o their_o desire_n be_v far_o great_a to_o benefit_v themselves_o by_o they_o for_o even_o as_o the_o corn_n that_o be_v kind_o sow_v in_o the_o field_n though_o it_o be_v hold_v back_o by_o unseasonable_a weather_n be_v in_o far_o better_a case_n then_o that_o which_o grow_v on_o the_o house_n top_n though_o it_o be_v forward_a in_o the_o blade_n and_o come_v soon_o to_o ear_n even_o so_o it_o be_v with_o they_o wisdom_n be_v easy_a to_o find_v of_o they_o that_o seek_v it_o diligent_o though_o they_o be_v further_o off_o from_o the_o mean_n than_o they_o who_o may_v enjoy_v they_o with_o more_o ease_n when_o there_o be_v not_o a_o heart_n in_o they_o to_o take_v good_a by_o they_o as_o they_o may_v thus_o you_o see_v the_o first_o three_o mean_n though_o a_o far_o off_o by_o which_o god_n bring_v the_o jailor_n and_o so_o do_v many_o other_o by_o the_o like_a to_o conversion_n all_o which_o degree_n tend_v thereto_o though_o i_o grant_v that_o many_o go_v beyond_o they_o all_o and_o never_o attain_v thereto_o yet_o in_o those_o who_o have_v be_v further_o off_o if_o they_o be_v such_o as_o god_n will_v call_v they_o have_v bring_v they_o on_o in_o such_o wise_a that_o they_o have_v set_v they_o forward_o to_o faith_n and_o repentance_n you_o have_v hear_v last_o of_o the_o mean_n of_o the_o jailor_n conversion_n which_o be_v more_o remote_a and_o further_o off_o near_o now_o follow_v those_o which_o be_v more_o near_o and_o do_v effect_v the_o same_o of_o the_o which_o the_o first_o be_v salvation_n that_o he_o question_v with_o they_o about_o his_o salvation_n say_v sir_n what_o must_v i_o do_v to_o be_v save_v and_o that_o we_o may_v know_v that_o he_o ask_v not_o this_o question_n idle_o vain_o or_o curious_o but_o serious_o from_o his_o heart_n and_o be_v urge_v by_o necessity_n it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o come_v tremble_v and_o fall_v down_o before_o they_o and_o in_o that_o fear_n and_o terror_n he_o move_v the_o question_n whereby_o it_o appear_v that_o he_o have_v hear_v somewhat_o from_o they_o that_o cause_v fear_n of_o god_n wrath_n and_o doubt_v of_o and_o about_o his_o salvation_n and_o thereby_o be_v bring_v so_o willing_o unto_o they_o to_o seek_v help_n and_o this_o come_v near_a the_o matter_n i_o mean_v his_o conversion_n than_o all_o that_o go_v before_o doct._n and_o now_o for_o our_o instruction_n this_o teach_v that_o when_o a_o wicked_a person_n conversion_n who_o have_v walk_v at_o his_o own_o liberty_n ignorant_o and_o profane_o as_o the_o most_o part_n do_v whether_o he_o have_v any_o light_n and_o wander_a thought_n about_o his_o salvation_n or_o no_o i_o say_v when_o such_o a_o one_o begin_v to_o tremble_v and_o fear_v that_o all_o will_v not_o go_v well_o with_o he_o but_o that_o his_o sin_n have_v find_v he_o out_o do_v threaten_v his_o damnation_n and_o thereupon_o begin_v to_o make_v question_n about_o his_o salvation_n what_o he_o shall_v do_v to_o attain_v to_o it_o then_o he_o come_v towards_o conversion_n and_o true_a repentance_n then_o there_o begin_v to_o be_v some_o hope_n of_o he_o and_o although_o i_o know_v that_o such_o fearful_a thought_n do_v sometime_o vanish_v and_o come_v to_o nothing_o and_o in_o some_o they_o break_v into_o rage_v and_o despair_n when_o they_o be_v not_o kind_o and_o seasonable_o wrought_v upon_o yet_o where_o no_o such_o toze_a and_o break_v of_o the_o heart_n be_v there_o without_o all_o doubt_n the_o party_n remain_v far_o off_o from_o all_o likelihood_n of_o turn_v to_o god_n for_o notwithstanding_o we_o judge_v charitable_o of_o they_o who_o resort_v ordinary_o and_o willing_o to_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n yea_o and_o conceive_v hope_n of_o other_o also_o among_o we_o though_o further_o off_o from_o goodness_n than_o they_o as_o be_v mere_a worldling_n ignorant_a or_o vain_a person_n and_o we_o wait_v when_o god_n shall_v call_v such_o to_o repentance_n for_o he_o bring_v out_o of_o both_o sort_n thereunto_o yet_o till_o such_o time_n that_o they_o begin_v to_o complain_v of_o their_o estate_n and_o to_o cry_v out_o not_o only_o suspect_v that_o all_o be_v not_o well_o with_o they_o but_o also_o know_v it_o to_o be_v so_o at_o leastwise_o fear_v and_o feel_v it_o and_o so_o ask_v counsel_n about_o it_o there_o be_v no_o sound_n approach_v near_o unto_o god_n to_o speak_v as_o the_o scripture_n do_v namely_o that_o the_o whole_a need_v not_o the_o physician_n 9.12_o and_o that_o it_o be_v the_o sick-hearted_n sinner_n which_o seek_v serious_o for_o mercy_n and_o forgiveness_n for_o as_o all_o that_o repair_n to_o market_n and_o fair_n go_v not_o to_o buy_v but_o many_o be_v wily_a night-wanderer_n who_o go_v to_o gaze_v 34.1_o to_o see_v and_o to_o be_v see_v as_o dinah_n do_v but_o such_o as_o want_v provision_n for_o their_o family_n both_o cheap_a and_o buy_v even_o so_o they_o
they_o shall_v see_v in_o the_o world_n one_o of_o these_o reason_n i_o have_v handle_v and_o that_o be_v see_v it_o shall_v be_v the_o case_n of_o many_o to_o do_v so_o the_o other_o be_v this_o reason_n because_o they_o who_o love_n wax_v cold_a to_o god_n to_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o to_o his_o people_n they_o fall_v also_o from_o the_o duty_n which_o by_o that_o love_n they_o shall_v perform_v or_o which_o be_v all_o one_o with_o it_o they_o do_v they_o to_o no_o purpose_n so_o that_o god_n accept_v they_o not_o according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n if_o i_o give_v all_o my_o good_n to_o the_o poor_a 13.1.2.3_o and_o my_o body_n to_o be_v burn_v and_o have_v no_o love_n and_o though_o i_o speak_v with_o the_o tongue_n of_o angel_n i_o be_o as_o sound_a brass_n or_o a_o tink_v cymbal_n so_o then_o if_o the_o best_a thing_n which_o we_o do_v be_v sin_n without_o this_o love_n it_o follow_v that_o if_o that_o grace_n of_o love_n be_v cold_a and_o dead_a in_o we_o all_o that_o we_o do_v be_v abhor_v of_o god_n i_o have_v now_o speak_v of_o the_o second_o sort_n prophe_n ie_v of_o text_n by_o our_o saviour_n sort_n who_o love_n wax_v namely_o of_o those_o who_o continue_v unto_o the_o end_n in_o a_o godly_a life_n such_o he_o say_v shall_v without_o question_n be_v save_v which_o word_n of_o christ_n must_v wise_o be_v consider_v and_o return_v again_o to_o the_o lord_n by_o true_a repentance_n for_o else_o none_o of_o the_o last_o mention_v sort_n can_v be_v save_v neither_o do_v he_o exclude_v such_o as_o have_v a_o long_a time_n lead_v a_o wicked_a race_n if_o they_o find_v mercy_n in_o their_o life_n time_n at_o god_n hand_n to_o be_v convert_v for_o if_o it_o be_v so_o then_o none_o of_o the_o first_o sort_n can_v obtain_v eternal_a life_n end_n but_o though_o he_o mean_v such_o as_o continue_v to_o the_o end_n in_o the_o good_a course_n in_o which_o they_o begin_v long_o before_o their_o death_n of_o which_o there_o be_v no_o question_n yet_o he_o mean_v also_o such_o who_o at_o their_o death_n shall_v be_v find_v penitent_a whether_o they_o begin_v then_o or_o whether_o long_o before_o and_o revolt_v or_o turn_v aside_o again_o so_o as_o in_o the_o truth_n of_o their_o heart_n they_o return_v at_o the_o last_o but_o let_v not_o this_o be_v take_v as_o though_o it_o be_v a_o small_a matter_n to_o do_v the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o nay_o rather_o they_o do_v both_o bold_o and_o dangerous_o which_o dare_v tempt_v god_n after_o such_o a_o manner_n yet_o if_o any_o dare_v adventure_n in_o that_o sort_n it_o be_v true_a that_o no_o man_n ought_v to_o debar_v they_o of_o this_o liberty_n that_o if_o they_o confess_v and_o forsake_v their_o sin_n 28.13_o they_o shall_v find_v mercy_n continue_v now_o to_o come_v to_o the_o word_n see_v they_o only_o who_o continue_v to_o the_o end_n shall_v be_v save_v and_o be_v bless_v the_o chief_a point_n here_o to_o be_v debate_v be_v who_o be_v he_o that_o continue_v and_o how_o he_o grow_v to_o it_o well_o the_o answer_n whereto_o be_v at_o hand_n that_o they_o who_o begin_v well_o and_o daily_o go_v forward_o shall_v continue_v to_o the_o end_n these_o therefore_o somewhat_o be_v requisite_a to_o be_v say_v which_o brief_o shall_v be_v do_v and_o of_o the_o first_o the_o less_o see_v in_o show_v before_o in_o the_o first_o point_n how_o they_o who_o have_v cause_v iniquity_n to_o abound_v shall_v repent_v i_o have_v declare_v that_o such_o repent_v be_v the_o right_a way_n to_o make_v a_o good_a end_n therefore_o this_o only_a i_o love_n in_o patience_n etc._n etc._n not_o flit_a and_o inconstant_a this_o saint_n peter_n require_v when_o he_o say_v take_v heed_n 3.17_o that_o you_o be_v not_o lead_v away_o from_o your_o steadfastness_n in_o knowledge_n and_o grace_n this_o require_v truth_n care_n and_o wisdom_n therefore_o do_v the_o few_o attain_v to_o it_o to_o be_v build_v and_o settle_v in_o their_o most_o holy_a faith_n but_o the_o most_o professor_n be_v off_o and_o on_o cheap_v 20._o but_o not_o buy_v therefore_o in_o every_o temptation_n or_o affliction_n for_o the_o most_o part_n they_o be_v doubt_v that_o they_o have_v not_o repent_v aright_o and_o that_o they_o have_v no_o faith_n neither_o ever_o have_v whereas_o a_o foundation_n well_o lay_v stand_v in_o storm_n and_o tempest_n and_o be_v not_o throw_v down_o with_o wind_n nor_o weather_n 7.27_o and_o in_o speak_v of_o this_o so_o worthy_a a_o point_n i_o can_v but_o bewail_v a_o common_a and_o dangerous_a practice_n among_o people_n and_o those_o of_o the_o better_a sort_n that_o few_o by_o all_o their_o hear_n and_o reading_n be_v able_a to_o collect_v and_o lay_v together_o a_o plain_a pathway_n to_o salvation_n and_o a_o direction_n to_o a_o godly_a life_n but_o by_o half_n or_o by_o shred_n and_o piece_n for_o either_o they_o fail_v in_o knowledge_n and_o so_o they_o be_v far_o from_o the_o right_a way_n so_o that_o if_o they_o will_v never_o so_o fain_o enjoy_v the_o benefit_n of_o both_o they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o go_v about_o it_o or_o else_o they_o seek_v not_o with_o all_o their_o heart_n to_o follow_v that_o which_o they_o know_v if_o their_o judgement_n be_v sound_a and_o that_o make_v all_o that_o they_o pretend_v or_o go_v about_o as_o far_o from_o a_o good_a foundation_n as_o the_o former_a and_o shall_v man_n think_v we_o begin_v in_o faith_n and_o repentance_n in_o such_o a_o manner_n be_v such_o a_o confuse_a and_o raw_a entrance_n into_o it_o like_a to_o profit_v it_o this_o be_v all_o that_o i_o will_v say_v of_o the_o first_o of_o the_o two_o thing_n that_o lead_v to_o a_o persevere_v in_o a_o godly_a course_n to_o our_o end_n and_o that_o be_v a_o right_a manner_n of_o therefore_o such_o be_v far_o from_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n always_o answ_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o example_n be_v not_o to_o be_v allege_v against_o rule_n for_o such_o as_o be_v sad_a
