honour_n of_o god_n in_o stubborn_o stand_v against_o the_o authority_n of_o his_o word_n while_o he_o have_v willing_o neglect_v to_o be_v admonish_v and_o advise_v thereby_o what_o contempt_n of_o his_o honour_n he_o have_v give_v forth_o in_o common_a swear_n and_o usual_a oath_n that_o either_o direct_o or_o indirect_o reach_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n even_o to_o the_o wound_v of_o he_o in_o the_o same_o moreover_o it_o behove_v he_o to_o consider_v what_o carelessness_n there_o have_v be_v and_o what_o little_a regard_n in_o his_o best_a do_n to_o have_v they_o so_o sound_o &_o thorough_o do_v as_o unto_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n do_v appertain_v where_o the_o diligent_a pain_n careful_a and_o through_o deal_n in_o matter_n that_o touch_v his_o own_o name_n shall_v be_v a_o sufficient_a light_n to_o disclose_v his_o halt_n with_o the_o lord_n for_o the_o corruption_n of_o man_n heart_n be_v so_o great_a and_o so_o hide_v that_o all_o mean_n almost_o be_v to_o few_o to_o utter_v it_o therefore_o it_o be_v requisite_a that_o we_o use_v all_o the_o mean_n we_o may_v in_o that_o behalf_n let_v a_o man_n in_o this_o examination_n well_o consider_v whether_o there_o have_v be_v any_o such_o fear_n or_o care_n to_o avoid_v thing_n forbid_v and_o to_o do_v thing_n command_v he_o by_o the_o word_n wherein_o consist_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n as_o there_o have_v be_v while_o his_o own_o honour_n be_v in_o hand_n and_o his_o own_o name_n call_v to_o question_n at_o any_o time_n whether_o he_o have_v deal_v in_o duty_n appoint_v he_o by_o god_n with_o fear_n and_o care_n lest_o the_o lord_n through_o his_o infirmity_n shall_v be_v foil_v &_o his_o name_n dishonour_v which_o can_v not_o have_v be_v want_v if_o his_o own_o estimation_n have_v be_v in_o hazard_n that_o he_o may_v be_v bring_v to_o the_o sight_n of_o his_o son_n for_o when_o it_o please_v god_n to_o call_v any_o to_o the_o hope_n of_o his_o kingdom_n he_o let_v they_o see_v their_o corruption_n to_o be_v so_o great_a in_o these_o and_o such_o other_o kind_n of_o dishonour_n that_o they_o have_v do_v unto_o he_o as_o that_o their_o heart_n be_v force_v to_o appeal_v unto_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n fasten_v themselves_o to_o it_o &_o utter_o give_v over_o their_o own_o obedience_n which_o mercy_n of_o god_n they_o so_o stay_v upon_o and_o be_v so_o comfortable_a in_o that_o it_o provoke_v they_o no_o long_o to_o neglect_v the_o name_n and_o glory_n of_o their_o god_n but_o with_o all_o reverence_n to_o submit_v themselves_o to_o the_o government_n of_o his_o word_n always_o endeavour_v to_o better_v their_o obedience_n towards_o his_o law_n because_o it_o tend_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o name_n wherein_o how_o great_a so_o ever_o their_o profit_v be_v yet_o this_o corruption_n which_o cleave_v so_o fast_o unto_o they_o can_v but_o continue_v in_o they_o still_o a_o humble_a and_o lowly_a heart_n even_o in_o all_o their_o blessing_n while_o they_o clear_o perceive_v they_o by_o the_o sight_n of_o their_o corruption_n to_o be_v the_o undeserved_a grace_n and_o gift_n of_o their_o god_n their_o offend_v also_o whatsoever_o can_v be_v without_o the_o great_a grief_n of_o their_o heart_n because_o they_o see_v it_o to_o be_v with_o the_o dishonour_n of_o he_o who_o have_v abase_v himself_o to_o the_o death_n of_o the_o cross_n to_o work_v the_o honour_n and_o advauncement_n of_o they_o we_o be_v therefore_o brethren_n diligent_o to_o learn_v to_o wax_v weary_a of_o those_o way_n that_o will_v depart_v from_o the_o reverence_n and_o honour_v of_o the_o lord_n in_o not_o fear_v to_o offend_v against_o his_o word_n 13._o because_o it_o be_v write_v he_o that_o despise_v the_o word_n he_o shall_v be_v destroy_v but_o he_o that_o fear_v the_o commandment_n shall_v be_v reward_v let_v we_o learn_v to_o become_v careful_a in_o the_o duty_n which_o be_v appoint_v we_o by_o the_o word_n for_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o hold_v they_o guiltless_a our_o god_n depend_v upon_o it_o it_o shall_v vex_v we_o that_o the_o gospel_n have_v be_v so_o long_a time_n with_o so_o little_a fruit_n among_o we_o that_o the_o instrument_n of_o his_o grace_n that_o have_v gain_v so_o many_o in_o former_a time_n unto_o god_n shall_v not_o only_o not_o prevail_v in_o many_o but_o even_o receive_v discredit_n and_o dishonour_n among_o man_n and_o that_o the_o little_a fruit_n appear_v in_o our_o life_n shall_v call_v into_o question_n the_o verity_n of_o god_n gospel_n be_v in_o fruit_n and_o effect_n so_o unlike_a in_o many_o unto_o that_o it_o have_v be_v in_o former_a time_n a_o christian_n shall_v go_v to_o the_o duty_n lay_v upon_o he_o by_o the_o word_n with_o the_o like_a mind_n that_o a_o good_a soldier_n go_v
with_o the_o publican_n to_o humble_v themselves_o true_o and_o from_o the_o sense_n of_o their_o heart_n in_o the_o nature_n that_o they_o have_v rebel_a against_o he_o it_o be_v neither_o great_a advance_n of_o god_n nor_o any_o great_a abase_v of_o ourselves_o to_o profess_v he_o to_o have_v do_v we_o good_a when_o there_o be_v no_o deserve_v of_o we_o to_o the_o contrary_a confess_v or_o appoint_v it_o to_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n that_o be_v unburden_v of_o their_o worldly_a affair_n they_o may_v with_o free_a heart_n and_o mind_n attend_v upon_o the_o word_n prayer_n and_o meditation_n of_o the_o mercy_n &_o benefit_n of_o god_n and_o so_o profit_v therein_o that_o the_o other_o day_n of_o labour_n may_v feel_v the_o benefit_n and_o commodity_n thereof_o they_o be_v better_o arm_v to_o stand_v against_o the_o occasion_n of_o evil_a which_o man_n who_o have_v daily_o deal_n in_o the_o world_n and_o so_o tickle_v a_o disposition_n unto_o sin_n without_o great_a grace_n shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o avoid_v but_o must_v altogether_o be_v overwhelm_v therewith_o and_o likewise_o it_o be_v ordain_v that_o man_n by_o consideration_n of_o his_o mercy_n shall_v so_o be_v lead_v to_o love_v he_o and_o by_o faith_n to_o wait_v for_o the_o mercy_n and_o happiness_n lay_v up_o for_o his_o that_o they_o may_v become_v the_o more_o willing_a the_o abundance_n thereof_o in_o a_o three_o sort_n we_o shall_v see_v it_o that_o if_o a_o man_n have_v any_o matter_n to_o deal_v in_o that_o be_v of_o small_a importance_n than_o that_o his_o ordinary_a business_n may_v give_v place_n thereunto_o those_o be_v cast_v upon_o the_o lord_n day_n and_o then_o must_v he_o and_o also_o oftentimes_o some_o of_o he_o be_v send_v upon_o those_o message_n or_o other_o matter_n whatsoever_o to_o dispatch_v they_o these_o kind_n of_o man_n use_v the_o sabbaoth_n day_n common_o to_o make_v a_o end_n of_o reckon_n or_o other_o kind_n of_o like_a matter_n not_o finish_v the_o former_a week_n and_o to_o set_v matter_n and_o business_n in_o a_o readiness_n for_o the_o week_n follow_v so_o that_o their_o head_n be_v as_o full_o fraught_v with_o the_o world_n that_o day_n as_o upon_o any_o other_o and_o therefore_o far_o from_o the_o right_a use_n thereof_o which_o be_v to_o be_v empty_v of_o all_o such_o thing_n that_o better_a may_v have_v the_o place_n these_o four_o commandment_n instruct_v we_o perfect_o concern_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n wherein_o it_o do_v consist_v first_o in_o acknowledge_v he_o alone_o the_o author_n of_o all_o in_o all_o these_o do_n even_o the_o best_a to_o humble_v ourselves_o in_o true_a acknowledge_v from_o the_o heart_n the_o corruption_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n way_n and_o work_n &_o earnest_o travel_v to_o subdue_v the_o same_o thereby_o advance_v the_o free_a mercy_n and_o undeserved_a goodness_n of_o our_o god_n both_o in_o justify_v and_o also_o sanctify_v of_o us._n in_o the_o examination_n of_o ourselves_o concern_v this_o commandment_n we_o have_v to_o learn_v that_o we_o be_v by_o nature_n corrupt_v in_o this_o commandment_n as_o in_o the_o rest_n &_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o so_o hard_a as_o with_o true_a humility_n of_o heart_n to_o be_v humble_v in_o acknowledge_v and_o mortify_v the_o corruption_n wickedness_n &_o rebellion_n of_o our_o nature_n against_o god_n commandment_n in_o somuch_o that_o oftentimes_o he_o suffer_v his_o child_n to_o fall_v into_o gross_a infirmity_n that_o all_o the_o world_n may_v see_v it_o before_o they_o can_v true_o be_v humble_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o their_o infirmity_n and_o so_o cast_v down_o as_o they_o give_v the_o whole_a glory_n to_o his_o mercy_n earnest_o set_v upon_o their_o affection_n for_o the_o subdue_a
of_o they_o but_o when_o it_o please_v god_n to_o pull_v any_o out_o of_o their_o corruption_n and_o to_o begin_v christianity_n in_o they_o he_o do_v let_v they_o see_v with_o assurance_n of_o his_o mercy_n toward_o they_o but_o so_o as_o notwithstanding_o he_o bring_v they_o not_o only_o to_o the_o sight_n and_o bewail_v of_o that_o rebellion_n which_o they_o feel_v in_o their_o affection_n against_o his_o will_n but_o also_o to_o the_o mortify_n and_o subdue_a thereof_o the_o man_n therefore_o that_o will_v true_o examine_v himself_o have_v to_o consider_v what_o resist_v of_o his_o affection_n have_v be_v in_o his_o life_n so_o shall_v he_o soon_o perceive_v what_o need_v he_o have_v to_o betake_v himself_o unto_o the_o mediator_n christ_n jesus_n while_o his_o conscience_n shall_v witness_v either_o of_o no_o profit_v at_o all_o herein_o or_o at_o the_o least_o so_o little_a as_o shall_v sufficient_o convict_v he_o and_o force_v he_o to_o lay_v hold_n upon_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n as_o his_o only_a refuge_n yet_o so_o as_o his_o care_n to_o suppress_v his_o affection_n be_v no_o less_o because_o he_o understand_v what_o mercy_n be_v in_o christ_n but_o so_o much_o the_o more_o increase_v as_o he_o perceive_v that_o travail_n to_o please_v the_o lord_n even_o as_o the_o best_a thankfulness_n that_o we_o can_v perform_v for_o the_o great_a benefit_n of_o our_o redemption_n now_o let_v we_o pray_v that_o we_o may_v bear_v such_o a_o enemy_n heart_n against_o our_o own_o corrupt_a affection_n as_o may_v not_o spare_v to_o tread_v upon_o they_o when_o soever_o they_o shall_v rise_v up_o against_o the_o lord_n ¶_o the_o five_o lecture_n upon_o the_o twelve_o verse_n 12_o honour_n thy_o father_n and_o thy_o mother_n that_o thy_o day_n affection_n which_o parent_n bear_v unto_o their_o child_n how_o gentle_a be_v they_o to_o they_o how_o ready_a to_o seek_v the_o pleasure_n of_o they_o how_o plentiful_a and_o liberal_a therein_o which_o come_v whole_o of_o a_o tender_a affection_n towards_o they_o this_o fruit_n of_o love_n be_v fit_o join_v unto_o the_o other_o for_o when_o a_o man_n can_v not_o only_o bear_v the_o any_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o persuade_v he_o himself_o that_o all_o the_o love_n and_o charity_n that_o be_v require_v in_o a_o man_n do_v dwell_v plentiful_o in_o he_o so_o unskilful_o &_o uncharitable_o do_v we_o judge_v of_o love_n and_o charity_n as_o if_o he_o love_v a_o man_n who_o be_v not_o provoke_v by_o any_o affection_n boil_v in_o he_o to_o hate_v or_o at_o least_o to_o mislike_v he_o whereas_o in_o very_a deed_n love_n be_v a_o tender_a like_n conceive_v of_o a_o man_n and_o so_o great_o delight_v &_o affect_v of_o he_o that_o it_o make_v he_o both_o marvellous_a because_o there_o be_v such_o plenty_n or_o store_n of_o gift_n in_o they_o nay_o we_o see_v the_o plain_a contrary_n that_o they_o be_v great_o delight_v to_o hear_v they_o praise_v of_o other_o for_o their_o gift_n and_o much_o give_v to_o speak_v of_o their_o praise_n themselves_o sometime_o think_v and_o affirm_v those_o gift_n which_o they_o have_v to_o be_v more_o and_o great_a then_o in_o deed_n they_o be_v nay_o sometime_o imagine_v that_o to_o be_v in_o they_o in_o great_a measure_n whereof_o in_o deed_n they_o never_o have_v any_o portion_n no_o not_o the_o least_o part_n so_o far_o be_v they_o from_o any_o envy_v of_o they_o for_o by_o love_n they_o be_v so_o as_o it_o be_v make_v one_o that_o the_o praise_n of_o their_o child_n they_o take_v to_o be_v a_o part_n of_o their_o own_o commendation_n which_o willing_o they_o will_v not_o loose_v this_o love_n do_v so_o join_v together_o and_o unite_v they_o that_o there_o can_v nothing_o be_v take_v from_o the_o one_o but_o the_o other_o take_v himself_o to_o be_v maim_v thereby_o as_o if_o he_o have_v lose_v some_o limb_n or_o joint_n of_o his_o own_o for_o this_o affection_n make_v they_o to_o grow_v both_o into_o one_o and_o who_o have_v ever_o envy_v the_o good_a or_o benefit_n that_o he_o receive_v by_o some_o member_n of_o his_o own_o body_n the_o scripture_n teach_v we_o that_o we_o be_v all_o member_n of_o one_o body_n and_o that_o we_o have_v our_o part_n of_o the_o profit_n that_o come_v by_o the_o gift_n of_o other_o through_o the_o marvelous_a work_n of_o god_n what_o madness_n therefore_o be_v it_o to_o envy_v our_o own_o commodity_n there_o can_v be_v no_o great_a token_n of_o a_o hateful_a man_n then_o be_v envy_n neither_o any_o plain_a proof_n that_o we_o be_v diverse_a from_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n then_o to_o envy_v the_o gift_n of_o the_o member_n thereof_o there_o be_v great_a diversity_n between_o love_n and_o envy_n for_o he_o that_o love_v take_v himself_o to_o be_v benefit_v in_o the_o benefit_n of_o he_o who_o he_o love_v himself_o to_o be_v praise_v in_o the_o praise_n of_o that_o man_n who_o he_o like_v the_o envious_a man_n on_o the_o contrary_a the_o same_o let_v we_o therefore_o keep_v ourselves_o far_o from_o this_o envy_n the_o true_a token_n that_o can_v be_v of_o the_o absence_n of_o charity_n &_o all_o true_a fear_n of_o god_n or_o fellowship_n with_o his_o member_n for_o the_o drive_v away_o of_o envy_n we_o have_v first_o to_o deal_v with_o our_o heart_n to_o persuade_v they_o as_o the_o truth_n be_v in_o deed_n that_o we_o have_v our_o benefit_n and_o profit_n in_o their_o gift_n no_o less_o than_o the_o eye_n have_v benefit_n from_o the_o foot_n or_o the_o foot_n from_o the_o eye_n which_o be_v bring_v to_o pass_v by_o of_o matter_n among_o man_n and_o how_o dangerous_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o control_v the_o lord_n i_o leave_v to_o they_o to_o consider_v of_o at_o their_o leisure_n last_o of_o all_o to_o feed_v our_o affection_n herein_o be_v to_o bring_v a_o continual_a torment_n upon_o we_o for_o when_o will_v there_o cease_v to_o be_v diversity_n of_o gift_n in_o man_n and_o if_o we_o be_v grieve_v when_o other_o have_v that_o which_o we_o have_v not_o when_o shall_v we_o cease_v to_o be_v vex_v shall_v there_o not_o be_v this_o diversity_n unto_o the_o end_n shall_v there_o be_v any_o time_n when_o all_o the_o body_n shall_v be_v but_o one_o member_n let_v we_o not_o imagine_v that_o when_o we_o shall_v give_v our_o heart_n leave_v to_o envy_v some_o one_o that_o this_o affection_n will_v die_v when_o he_o be_v take_v away_o or_o when_o we_o shall_v have_v prevail_v against_o he_o nay_o it_o be_v make_v by_o that_o mean_n so_o much_o the_o more_fw-it strong_a and_o as_o for_o the_o occasion_n it_o never_o die_v for_o there_o shall_v be_v always_o some_o that_o shall_v deserve_v and_o just_o have_v true_a praise_n and_o estimation_n for_o some_o thing_n which_o we_o have_v not_o and_o therefore_o can_v come_v to_o have_v the_o praise_n of_o it_o for_o ourselves_o in_o deed_n the_o next_o way_n to_o have_v the_o glory_n of_o it_o be_v by_o love_n to_o be_v one_o as_o one_o with_o the_o true_a owner_n thereof_o to_o encourage_v we_o to_o this_o love_n that_o drive_v away_o envy_n let_v we_o remember_v that_o in_o drive_v it_o away_o we_o join_v with_o the_o lord_n who_o have_v thus_o appoint_v it_o we_o approve_v his_o do_n as_o good_a we_o acknowledge_v by_o thankfulness_n the_o commodity_n that_o we_o have_v of_o they_o we_o rid_v ourselves_o of_o a_o infinite_a and_o endless_a torment_n to_o conclude_v this_o property_n of_o love_n it_o be_v requisite_a that_o we_o often_o consider_v how_o unworthy_a we_o be_v of_o those_o benefit_n that_o we_o do_v enjoy_v to_o learn_v both_o to_o be_v content_v with_o they_o and_o to_o be_v thankful_a to_o god_n for_o they_o and_o to_o keep_v we_o in_o such_o thankful_a remembrance_n thereof_o as_o may_v make_v we_o studious_a to_o walk_v worthy_a of_o they_o to_o so_o great_a goodness_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o therein_o as_o may_v keep_v we_o occupy_v in_o care_n how_o by_o duty_n we_o may_v answer_v they_o always_o take_v heed_n lest_o we_o shall_v become_v unthankful_a even_o for_o the_o good_a which_o god_n do_v mean_a towards_o we_o in_o those_o gift_n the_o possession_n whereof_o he_o have_v give_v unto_o other_o as_o love_n be_v void_a of_o envy_n so_o be_v it_o report_v here_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o it_o be_v void_a of_o deal_v insolent_o froward_o or_o stubborn_o for_o so_o sound_v
