be_v uncapable_a of_o light_n so_o bitter_a as_o there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o make_v it_o sweet_a so_o venomous_a as_o it_o be_v no_o way_n capable_a of_o any_o wholsomness_n now_o for_o the_o clear_n of_o this_o consider_v these_o three_o thing_n 1._o put_v all_o the_o good_a in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n and_o in_o all_o the_o creature_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n together_o suppose_v the_o quintiscence_n of_o all_o the_o good_a of_o all_o the_o creature_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n be_v put_v together_o and_o bring_v that_o to_o sin_n and_o add_v it_o to_o it_o it_o will_v not_o make_v it_o good_a no_o sin_n will_v remain_v still_o as_o evil_a as_o before_o it_o be_v now_o that_o must_v needs_o be_v poison_n indeed_o that_o bring_v all_o the_o sovereign_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n and_o put_v to_o it_o yet_o there_o will_v not_o be_v a_o deminishion_n of_o the_o least_o strength_n of_o that_o poison_n and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o sin_n therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o brethren_n observe_v it_o those_o man_n and_o woman_n be_v mighty_o mistake_v that_o think_v i_o have_v be_v a_o sinful_a creature_n indeed_o but_o now_o i_o will_v amend_v and_o reform_v and_o be_v better_o that_o by_o add_v some_o good_a to_o their_o former_a sinful_a life_n it_o will_v make_v all_o good_a oh_o know_v that_o there_o be_v so_o much_o evil_n in_o sin_n that_o the_o addition_n of_o all_o the_o good_a of_o all_o the_o creature_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n can_v make_v it_o less_o evil_a than_o before_o so_o that_o you_o must_v not_o only_o now_o think_v to_o live_v better_a &_o add_v good_a unto_o your_o former_a evil_n but_o you_o must_v take_v a_o course_n for_o the_o take_v away_o of_o the_o former_a evil_n for_o the_o deliver_v you_o from_o the_o guilt_n and_o stain_n and_o filth_n of_o your_o former_a sin_n 2._o sin_n be_v not_o capable_a of_o good_a all_o those_o good_a end_n that_o any_o man_n have_v in_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n yet_o do_v not_o make_v their_o sin_n the_o better_a that_o can_v make_v sin_n good_a because_o they_o have_v good_a end_n as_o thus_o there_o may_v be_v three_o good_a end_n some_o may_v think_v they_o have_v in_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n 1_o they_o may_v perhaps_o think_v that_o by_o commission_n of_o some_o sin_n they_o may_v further_o some_o grace_n do_v good_a to_o other_o or_o glorify_v god_n there_o may_v be_v such_o deceit_n in_o the_o heart_n as_o thus_o 1_o they_o may_v think_v such_o a_o sin_n will_v help_v such_o a_o grace_n and_o help_v against_o such_o a_o temptation_n and_o such_o a_o sin_n may_v help_v my_o humility_n and_o it_o be_v ordinary_a this_o temptation_n when_o in_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n make_v away_o thyself_o and_o then_o thou_o will_v sin_v no_o more_o for_o so_o long_o as_o i_o live_v i_o shall_v sin_v against_o god_n &_o therefore_o make_v away_o thyself_o and_o so_o cease_v to_o sin_n but_o know_v if_o thou_o lay_v violent_a hand_n upon_o thyself_o and_o the_o whole_a world_n to_o perish_v rather_o than_o commit_v one_o sin_n there_o be_v so_o much_o evil_n in_o sin_n it_o be_v the_o expression_n of_o augustine_n in_o a_o tractate_n of_o his_o concern_v a_o officious_a lie_n a_o friend_n of_o his_o write_v to_o he_o to_o answer_v this_o question_n about_o tell_v of_o a_o lie_n whether_o he_o may_v not_o tell_v a_o lie_n to_o do_v good_a to_o another_o man_n many_o think_v what_o though_o i_o do_v tell_v a_o lie_n so_o i_o do_v another_o good_a indeed_o if_o i_o may_v do_v hurt_v than_o i_o must_v not_o but_o if_o i_o may_v do_v prayer_n and_o cost_n that_o you_o may_v not_o have_v a_o child_n a_o enemy_n to_o god_n a_o traitor_n to_o the_o crown_n sceptre_n and_o dignity_n of_o jesus_n christ_n oh_o brethren_n do_v it_o not_o pity_v your_o soul_n to_o see_v that_o infinite_a bless_a holy_a dreadful_a god_n so_o much_o wrong_v in_o the_o world_n as_o he_o be_v it_o shall_v move_v we_o to_o pity_v to_o see_v any_o saint_n a_o man_n or_o a_o woman_n of_o a_o excellent_a gracious_a spirit_n to_o see_v such_o a_o soul_n abuse_v and_o wrong_v as_o solomon_n say_v there_o be_v a_o wise_a man_n in_o the_o city_n spirit_n wrong_v and_o abuse_v then_o how_o shall_v it_o trouble_v any_o ingenious_a any_o gracious_a heart_n in_o the_o world_n to_o see_v the_o infinite_a bless_a glorious_a god_n to_o be_v wrong_v xxvii_o four_o sin_n be_v opposite_a to_o man_n good_a because_o it_o be_v most_o opposite_a to_o the_o last_o end_n for_o which_o man_n be_v make_v a_o four_o thing_n wherein_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n consist_v as_o most_o opposite_a to_o man_n good_a be_v this_o because_o it_o lie_v most_o opposite_a to_o the_o last_o end_n for_o which_o man_n be_v make_v in_o that_o other_o passage_n i_o so_o terrible_a and_o fearful_a as_o that_o fear_n the_o guilty_a conscience_n have_v take_v a_o man_n or_o woman_n who_o conscience_n be_v deliver_v from_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n such_o a_o one_o though_o heaven_n and_o earth_n shall_v meet_v be_v not_o so_o much_o trouble_v certain_o brethren_n in_o these_o great_a fear_n among_o we_o that_o you_o be_v scare_v at_o everything_o it_o be_v david_n remember_v not_o against_o i_o the_o sin_n of_o my_o youth_n therefore_o now_o prevent_v those_o sin_n that_o otherwise_o will_v lie_v so_o heavilie_o upon_o you_o as_o that_o you_o will_v be_v force_v to_o cry_v out_o oh_o remember_v not_o against_o i_o the_o sin_n of_o my_o youth_n oh_o it_o be_v a_o happy_a thing_n to_o see_v young_a one_o good_a and_o it_o be_v the_o great_a hope_n kennel_n the_o low_a and_o further_o it_o go_v the_o more_o filth_n it_o have_v gather_v and_o so_o the_o low_a generation_n have_v go_v the_o more_o filthy_a they_o have_v be_v but_o we_o hope_v god_n intend_v to_o turn_v the_o course_n and_o to_o make_v godliness_n as_o much_o honour_a as_o it_o have_v be_v dishonour_v heretofore_o and_o that_o there_o shall_v not_o be_v so_o much_o sin_n in_o the_o next_o generation_n heretofore_o young_a people_n when_o they_o have_v day_n of_o recreation_n what_o do_v they_o but_o multiply_v sin_n what_o abundance_n of_o wickedness_n be_v commit_v by_o youth_n then_o and_o on_o shrove-tuesday_n abundance_n of_o wickedness_n commit_v by_o youth_n then_o and_o so_o the_o generation_n be_v fill_v with_o sin_n of_o youth_n but_o now_o god_n be_v please_v to_o stir_v up_o the_o heart_n of_o young_a one_o that_o instead_o of_o multiply_v of_o sin_n they_o be_v get_v together_o on_o such_o day_n to_o fast_o and_o to_o pray_v and_o make_v day_n to_o attend_v upon_o the_o word_n and_o so_o avoid_v sin_n it_o be_v that_o certain_o that_o do_v encourage_v the_o heart_n of_o god_n people_n to_o pray_v to_o he_o and_o to_o seek_v he_o for_o mercy_n that_o god_n give_v heart_n to_o young_a people_n that_o they_o multiply_v not_o sin_n as_o heretofore_o if_o there_o be_v any_o here_o that_o have_v begin_v this_o oh_o go_v on_o in_o that_o way_n and_o when_o other_o multiply_v wickedness_n upon_o such_o day_n get_v alone_o and_o attend_v upon_o the_o word_n and_o recreate_v your_o soul_n in_o the_o word_n and_o holy_a conference_n true_a god_n give_v liberty_n to_o recreate_v but_o let_v it_o he_o as_o it_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v with_o the_o company_n in_o london_n though_o they_o do_v recreate_v they_o will_v have_v their_o sermon_n too_o so_o instead_o of_o horrible_a wickedness_n that_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v upon_o those_o day_n as_o i_o suppose_v some_o of_o you_o can_v remember_v upon_o shrove-tuesday_n infinite_a think_v you_o can_v give_v example_n of_o any_o godly_a have_v be_v so_o and_o if_o god_n will_v but_o turn_v the_o heart_n of_o some_o poor_a wretched_a miserable_a creature_n so_o that_o there_o may_v appear_v godliness_n in_o they_o god_n will_v provide_v for_o they_o it_o be_v true_a though_o there_o be_v not_o godliness_n we_o shall_v not_o let_v they_o perish_v god_n forbid_v let_v they_o not_o want_v that_o which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a let_v they_o not_o starve_v yet_o the_o scripture_n say_v let_v they_o that_o will_v not_o work_v not_o eat_v let_v not_o we_o do_v more_o than_o the_o scripture_n command_v to_o give_v liberty_n in_o such_o way_n as_o increase_v sin_n and_o let_v not_o we_o nourish_v that_o which_o nourish_v sin_n but_o inquire_v after_o they_o that_o be_v godly_a and_o relieve_v they_o and_o if_o poor_a people_n will_v depend_v upon_o god_n in_o his_o way_n he_o will_v provide_v for_o they_o and_o know_v if_o thy_o affliction_n shall_v not_o be_v take_v away_o if_o thy_o sin_n be_v go_v thou_o will_v be_v far_o more_o able_a to_o bear_v thy_o affliction_n for_o a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o sore_a shoulder_n can_v bear_v a_o burden_n but_o if_o the_o soreness_n be_v go_v he_o can_v bear_v it_o the_o better_a so_o thy_o affliction_n will_v not_o be_v so_o heavy_a if_o thou_o be_v godly_a as_o it_o be_v now_o nay_o it_o will_v be_v sanctify_v to_o thou_o and_o thou_o will_v bear_v they_o the_o better_a i_o confess_v this_o be_v hard_a to_o convince_v they_o that_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n &_o the_o nature_n of_o grace_n but_o certain_o there_o be_v a_o truth_n in_o these_o thing_n therefore_o though_o it_o be_v rare_a for_o god_n to_o come_v in_o with_o his_o save_a grace_n into_o the_o heart_n of_o such_o that_o be_v miserable_o afflict_v though_o it_o be_v true_a their_o affliction_n do_v not_o hinder_v for_o be_v it_o not_o for_o their_o wickedness_n they_o may_v be_v happy_a i_o will_v not_o make_v their_o affliction_n great_a than_o it_o be_v they_o may_v be_v happy_a be_v it_o not_o for_o their_o wickedness_n but_o we_o see_v it_o so_o rare_a because_o their_o education_n be_v such_o there_o be_v no_o good_a principle_n in_o they_o and_o nothing_o to_o work_v upon_o in_o they_o be_v breed_v up_o in_o atheism_n therefore_o it_o be_v very_o rare_a but_o because_o it_o be_v so_o rare_a so_o much_o the_o great_a will_n god_n grace_n be_v if_o god_n have_v some_o of_o these_o poor_a creature_n in_o this_o congregation_n at_o this_o present_a and_o speak_v to_o their_o heart_n how_o much_o more_o rare_a will_v it_o be_v because_o it_o be_v not_o often_o see_v what_o if_o god_n pass_v by_o great_a rich_a man_n noble_a man_n prince_n and_o shall_v look_v into_o thy_o cottage_n and_o on_o thy_o miserable_a estate_n and_o convert_v thy_o soul_n and_o show_v mercy_n to_o thou_o what!_o for_o god_n to_o set_v his_o heart_n upon_o thou_o and_o give_v the_o blood_n of_o his_o son_n for_o thou_o and_o to_o make_v thou_o a_o heir_n with_o jesus_n christ_n give_v thou_o a_o inheritance_n in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o glory_n and_o in_o life_n to_o make_v thou_o come_v and_o reign_v with_o he_o and_o therefore_o we_o be_v teach_v to_o pray_v lead_v we_o not_o into_o temptation_n as_o well_o as_o forgive_v we_o our_o trespass_n true_a god_n keep_v i_o from_o such_o and_o such_o sin_n but_o and_o keep_v up_o communion_n with_o god_n in_o secret_a in_o my_o closet_n and_o in_o my_o family_n he_o break_v indeed_o but_o how_o oh_o some_o secret_a sin_n he_o keep_v in_o his_o bosom_n there_o be_v some_o secret_a sin_n he_o let_v his_o heart_n hanker_v after_o and_o now_o god_n have_v leave_v he_o to_o it_o now_o by_o god_n grace_n i_o will_v look_v to_o myself_o i_o will_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n take_v heed_n of_o secret_a sin_n thus_o brethren_n if_o we_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n we_o will_v be_v thus_o careful_a to_o prevent_v the_o evil_n of_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o the_o evil_a of_o affliction_n and_o so_o many_o for_o their_o child_n oh_o they_o will_v be_v provide_v for_o their_o child_n that_o they_o may_v live_v like_o man_n and_o have_v somewhat_o to_o take_v to_o but_o if_o you_o be_v apprehensive_a of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n you_o will_v provide_v for_o their_o soul_n as_o well_o as_o their_o body_n and_o therefore_o oh_o let_v i_o put_v he_o in_o a_o good_a family_n and_o there_o he_o may_v learn_v to_o prevent_v sin_n this_o be_v the_o first_o to_o reprove_v those_o that_o labour_n to_o prevent_v affliction_n but_o not_o sin_n second_o it_o serve_v to_o reprove_v those_o that_o be_v careful_a to_o keep_v themselves_o from_o sin_n but_o it_o be_v mere_o for_o fear_n of_o affliction_n only_o upon_o that_o ground_n as_o if_o there_o be_v not_o evil_a enough_o in_o sin_n itself_o but_o all_o the_o evil_n be_v in_o affliction_n certain_o these_o man_n and_o woman_n understand_v not_o this_o that_o there_o be_v more_o evil_a in_o sin_n than_o in_o affliction_n if_o thou_o do_v understand_v and_o be_v sensible_a of_o this_o point_n i_o have_v treat_v upon_o thou_o will_v find_v argument_n enough_o from_o sin_n itself_o to_o keep_v thou_o from_o sin_n though_o no_o affliction_n shall_v follow_v thou_o abstain_v from_o sin_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n not_o because_o of_o any_o great_a evil_n thou_o see_v in_o sin_n but_o because_o of_o affliction_n thy_o conscience_n tell_v thou_o it_o will_v bring_v thou_o to_o trouble_v and_o into_o affliction_n and_o this_o keep_v away_o sin_n it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v good_a for_o man_n and_o woman_n to_o avoid_v sin_n upon_o any_o term_n and_o this_o be_v one_o motive_n god_n propound_v to_o avoid_v sin_n by_o but_o this_o be_v not_o all_o or_o the_o chief_a motive_n because_o of_o affliction_n and_o trouble_v conscience_n tell_v thou_o god_n will_v be_v even_o with_o thou_o and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n pursue_v thou_o very_o few_o come_v so_o far_o to_o have_v such_o apprehension_n of_o the_o evil_a consequence_n of_o sin_n and_o to_o avoid_v sin_n upon_o they_o ground_n but_o you_o shall_v labour_v not_o only_o to_o avoid_v sin_n from_o the_o evil_a consequence_n of_o sin_n but_o for_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n itself_o for_o if_o thou_o avoid_v sin_n only_o from_o the_o evil_a consequence_n of_o sin_n know_v 1_o this_o may_v be_v without_o change_n of_o nature_n a_o man_n or_o a_o woman_n may_v be_v in_o such_o a_o estate_n as_o they_o may_v not_o dare_v to_o commit_v some_o sin_n out_o of_o fear_n
