know_v that_o his_o case_n be_v marvellous_o fearful_a for_o if_o faith_n be_v in_o he_o indeed_o it_o will_v appear_v you_o can_v keep_v your_o good_a heart_n to_o yourselves_o where_o ever_o fire_n be_v it_o will_v burn_v and_o where_o ever_o faith_n be_v it_o can_v be_v

it_o be_v a_o secret_a sin_n or_o a_o public_a sin_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o circumstance_n however_o sin_n may_v differ_v yet_o they_o apprehend_v the_o great_a evil_a and_o bitterness_n to_o be_v in_o all_o sin_n thereupon_o it_o be_v that_o they_o be_v as_o true_o though_o not_o as_o strong_o shy_a of_o the_o least_o sin_n as_o of_o the_o great_a of_o the_o secret_a sin_n as_o of_o the_o christ_n tell_v they_o that_o one_o of_o the_o twelve_o shall_v betray_v he_o and_o shall_v not_o we_o be_v careful_a to_o try_v ourselves_o when_o as_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o that_o scarce_o do_v the_o law_n cause_v corruption_n to_o sin_n the_o law_n again_o come_v to_o a_o corrupt_a heart_n and_o bid_v they_o refrain_v corruption_n refuse_v cause_v corruption_n to_o sin_n for_o if_o the_o first_o place_n go_v to_o god_n and_o advise_v with_o he_o and_o hear_v what_o his_o good_a pleasure_n be_v towards_o you_o and_o never_o inquire_v of_o your_o own_o carnal_a reason_n again_o of_o a_o father_n or_o friend_n or_o husband_n or_o master_n stand_v you_o in_o stead_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n will_v this_o be_v a_o satisfactory_a answer_n at_o that_o day_n my_o husband_n entreat_v i_o my_o friend_n counsel_v i_o my_o master_n command_v i_o no_o my_o brethren_n as_o you_o be_v brethren_n in_o iniquity_n and_o cause_n of_o sin_n one_o to_o another_o so_o you_o brethren_n whether_o be_v better_a for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v enrich_v or_o glorify_v to_o hear_v a_o earthly_a parent_n that_o happy_o may_v give_v he_o a_o earthly_a patrimony_n or_o a_o heavenly_a father_n that_o assure_o will_v receive_v he_o to_o mercy_n in_o the_o end_n of_o this_o life_n think_v of_o these_o thing_n and_o withal_o know_v that_o the_o mean_n and_o help_n and_o support_v that_o we_o desire_v be_v not_o proper_o in_o the_o power_n of_o friend_n and_o acquaintance_n but_o it_o be_v god_n that_o bow_v the_o heart_n and_o enlarge_v the_o spirit_n of_o man_n whether_o friend_n or_o no_o to_o do_v we_o good_a i_o have_v know_v many_o a_o carnal_a man_n that_o have_v wicked_a friend_n have_v be_v enforce_v to_o bestow_v most_o upon_o those_o who_o life_n and_o practice_n he_o most_o oppose_a and_o hate_v at_o leastwise_o believe_v for_o a_o truth_n what_o the_o lord_n say_v by_o the_o prophet_n isa_n 55.3_o incline_v your_o ear_n and_o come_v unto_o i_o hear_v and_o your_o soul_n shall_v live_v that_o be_v enough_o i_o think_v to_o put_v to_o silence_v all_o such_o objection_n as_o these_o what_o ever_o carnal_a friend_n shall_v persuade_v you_o to_o faith_n do_v not_o perform_v all_o its_o work_n at_o one_o time_n but_o grow_v to_o a_o ripeness_n upon_o several_a occasion_n a_o child_n be_v a_o perfect_a man_n in_o regard_n of_o part_n though_o not_o of_o degree_n he_o be_v able_a to_o eat_v and_o to_o see_v though_o he_o can_v walk_v and_o talk_v yet_o because_o he_o have_v a_o reasonable_a soul_n as_o well_o as_o other_o he_o will_v walk_v and_o talk_v like_o other_o in_o due_a time_n so_o howsoever_o many_o of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n have_v not_o attain_v to_o those_o great_a action_n of_o grace_n that_o other_o have_v yet_o have_v the_o same_o spirit_n and_o principle_n of_o grace_n within_o they_o shall_v be_v enable_v hereafter_o to_o a_o further_o discharge_v of_o those_o holy_a service_n that_o god_n require_v thus_o you_o that_o they_o can_v be_v contend_v to_o go_v to_o bed_n like_o beast_n the_o like_a i_o may_v say_v of_o many_o other_o duty_n the_o lord_n call_v for_o fast_v and_o prayer_n and_o will_v have_v his_o people_n humble_v themselves_o and_o seek_v his_o face_n now_o because_o the_o duty_n be_v tedious_a and_o happy_o the_o world_n cross_v it_o therefore_o many_o will_v fall_v out_o with_o the_o ordinance_n reject_v it_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o it_o they_o will_v have_v their_o ease_n and_o their_o quiet_n their_o heart_n be_v grow_v fat_a and_o if_o any_o thing_n across_o their_o corruption_n they_o will_v not_o hear_v with_o that_o ear_n it_o be_v fearful_a what_o the_o lord_n speak_v against_o these_o rom._n 1._o 28._o and_o my_o heart_n tremble_v to_o think_v of_o the_o hideous_a curâ—e_n of_o god_n against_o such_o course_n and_o his_o severe_a indignation_n against_o such_o person_n it_o be_v say_v there_o that_o because_o the_o heathen_a delight_v not_o to_o retain_v god_n in_o their_o knowledge_n god_n give_v they_o over_o to_o a_o reprobate_a mind_n to_o do_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o convenient_a mark_v as_o they_o do_v not_o like_a to_o retain_v god_n in_o their_o knowledge_n as_o who_o shall_v say_v must_v my_o mind_n be_v enlighten_v must_v i_o be_v convince_v and_o persuade_v that_o i_o must_v lay_v aside_o myself_o and_o be_v content_a in_o uprightness_n of_o heart_n to_o embrace_v every_o truth_n of_o god_n though_o it_o be_v with_o the_o loss_n of_o ease_n and_o credit_n and_o estate_n yea_o and_o of_o life_n itself_o must_v i_o do_v this_o well_o i_o do_v not_o like_v it_o i_o will_v not_o believe_v it_o all_o the_o world_n shall_v never_o persuade_v i_o to_o it_o and_o why_o because_o you_o have_v take_v a_o retain_v the_o truth_n he_o afford_v they_o to_o give_v they_o up_o to_o a_o reprobate_a mind_n that_o be_v to_o a_o mind_n void_a of_o judgement_n not_o know_v the_o truth_n not_o approve_v the_o word_n and_o you_o shall_v see_v these_o man_n in_o all_o their_o course_n and_o opinion_n vanishy_a why_o because_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v they_o up_o to_o a_o reprobate_a mind_n a_o mind_n not_o able_a to_o observe_v what_o he_o reveal_v and_o a_o heart_n not_o willing_a to_o entertain_v what_o he_o discover_v to_o be_v good_a gather_v up_o these_o thing_n this_o be_v the_o last_o and_o most_o special_a argument_n why_o the_o heart_n of_o most_o man_n be_v estrange_v from_o god_n and_o his_o truth_n because_o they_o harbour_v many_o lust_n in_o their_o soul_n and_o cleave_v close_o to_o some_o or_o other_o corruption_n it_o be_v a_o passage_n worthy_a observation_n that_o be_v record_v jer_n 43._o the_o people_n that_o be_v leave_v behind_o in_o the_o land_n when_o the_o king_n of_o babylon_n have_v carry_v the_o rest_n away_o captive_a be_v resolve_v to_o go_v down_o into_o egypt_n but_o they_o will_v first_o go_v to_o the_o prophet_n and_o take_v his_o advice_n and_o he_o must_v go_v to_o the_o lord_n and_o whatsoever_o the_o lord_n shall_v declare_v to_o they_o by_o the_o prophet_n that_o they_o will_v do_v be_v it_o good_a or_o be_v it_o evil_n here_o be_v a_o very_a contentment_n therefore_o though_o we_o shall_v appear_v to_o be_v sincere_a before_o god_n in_o all_o thing_n and_o zealous_a for_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n we_o will_v shuffle_v in_o divers_a practice_n rather_o than_o be_v disturb_v and_o trouble_v in_o that_o course_n that_o we_o have_v set_v to_o ourselves_o now_o i_o say_v gather_v up_o these_o and_o i_o think_v the_o point_n be_v clear_a if_o it_o be_v so_o that_o man_n be_v blind_a in_o their_o mind_n and_o can_v know_v the_o word_n if_o so_o be_v they_o be_v careless_a and_o do_v not_o attend_v to_o the_o word_n nay_o if_o so_o be_v they_o be_v settle_v in_o their_o sin_n and_o corruption_n from_o which_o they_o will_v not_o part_v it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o though_o they_o have_v mean_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o saving_o inform_v in_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n answerable_o to_o those_o mean_n which_o be_v bestow_v upon_o they_o let_v i_o add_v now_o but_o one_o thing_n for_o the_o full_a clear_n of_o the_o doctrine_n you_o will_v say_v we_o see_v the_o quite_o contrary_a for_o it_o be_v clear_a and_o evident_a that_o there_o be_v many_o that_o live_v in_o the_o bosom_n of_o the_o church_n that_o have_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o understanding_n yet_o be_v not_o such_o as_o god_n have_v wrought_v upon_o effectual_o yea_o the_o devil_n himself_o have_v knowledge_n enough_o and_o many_o a_o man_n that_o be_v nought_o and_o carnal_a have_v a_o abundant_a measure_n of_o understanding_n happy_o much_o more_o than_o some_o godly_a and_o holy_a man_n can_v attain_v to_o to_o answer_v this_o in_o two_o or_o three_o word_n it_o be_v true_a i_o confess_v there_o be_v many_o a_o curse_a hypocrite_n that_o have_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n and_o yet_o in_o very_a deed_n have_v no_o true_a understanding_n at_o all_o for_o the_o knowledge_n whereby_o such_o man_n be_v enlighten_v differ_v much_o from_o that_o information_n and_o understanding_n which_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n have_v for_o look_v as_o there_o be_v wild_a thime_n and_o garden_n thime_n both_o of_o the_o same_o name_n and_o both_o grow_a after_o the_o same_o manner_n yet_o very_o different_a in_o their_o nature_n and_o quality_n so_o it_o be_v with_o knowledge_n there_o be_v a_o gracious_a and_o a_o sanctify_a knowledge_n garden_n knowledge_n as_o i_o may_v say_v and_o there_o be_v a_o wild_a and_o a_o common_a knowledge_n i_o will_v open_v it_o a_o little_a in_o two_o or_o three_o word_n if_o you_o go_v no_o further_o but_o consider_v the_o understanding_n of_o both_o bare_o you_o shall_v judas_n may_v thus_o far_o have_v his_o understanding_n enlighten_v concern_v all_o the_o truth_n of_o life_n and_o salvation_n that_o be_v either_o discover_v or_o make_v know_v out_o of_o the_o book_n of_o god_n as_o to_o perceive_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o word_n that_o be_v set_v down_o and_o understand_o to_o discourse_v of_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o reason_n of_o the_o point_n therein_o contain_v and_o that_o more_o free_o and_o abundant_o in_o outward_a appearance_n than_o many_o of_o the_o dear_a saint_n and_o servant_n of_o god_n be_v able_a to_o do_v and_o yet_o all_o this_o be_v but_o that_o which_o the_o apostle_n paul_n call_v a_o form_n of_o knowledge_n rom._n 2.20_o such_o a_o one_o have_v only_o get_v religion_n by_o rote_n as_o we_o use_v to_o say_v like_o a_o child_n that_o happy_o may_v be_v teach_v a_o sillogisme_n or_o some_o form_n of_o a_o argument_n he_o may_v say_v it_o without_o book_n but_o understand_v it_o not_o so_o hypocrite_n may_v have_v a_o form_n and_o as_o it_o be_v a_o outside_n of_o knowledge_n but_o there_o be_v something_o in_o the_o bottom_n concern_v the_o savingnesse_n and_o holiness_n of_o knowledge_n which_o they_o can_v never_o attain_v unto_o for_o certain_a it_o be_v there_o be_v never_o a_o carnal_a person_n under_o heaven_n howsoever_o he_o can_v talk_v of_o god_n and_o of_o christ_n and_o of_o faith_n that_o either_o know_v god_n in_o the_o work_n of_o his_o way_n towards_o he_o or_o himself_o in_o the_o work_n of_o his_o duty_n towards_o god_n that_o be_v a_o strange_a passage_n concern_v be_v please_v to_o work_v effectual_o upon_o the_o soul_n there_o be_v a_o sanctify_a work_n on_o the_o understanding_n as_o well_o as_o on_o the_o will_n now_o that_o work_n which_o be_v upon_o the_o understanding_n of_o a_o servant_n of_o god_n as_o true_o differ_v from_o the_o enlighten_v of_o a_o carnal_a hypocrite_n as_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o saint_n from_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n not_o sanctify_v as_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n i_o say_v have_v a_o proper_a and_o peculiar_a work_n of_o sanctification_n upon_o the_o will_n of_o god_n child_n so_o also_o have_v he_o upon_o their_o mind_n and_o understanding_n therefore_o of_o necessity_n wicked_a man_n have_v no_o work_n of_o sanctification_n the_o child_n of_o god_n must_v needs_o differ_v from_o they_o in_o this_o now_o because_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o natural_a man_n be_v not_o able_a nor_o indeed_o willing_a to_o stoop_v to_o the_o authority_n and_o power_n of_o the_o word_n loath_a to_o be_v at_o the_o beck_n of_o god_n command_n such_o natural_a pride_n and_o arrogancy_n of_o spirit_n there_o be_v in_o carnal_a man_n that_o in_o stead_n of_o submit_v and_o yield_v thereunto_o they_o take_v up_o arm_n the_o more_o against_o it_o by_o how_o much_o the_o more_o powerful_a the_o word_n it_o it_o be_v a_o pretty_a passage_n that_o we_o read_v of_o the_o philistine_n when_o the_o israelite_n shall_v the_o minister_n rule_v we_o do_v he_o think_v to_o bring_v we_o under_o his_o girdle_n to_o make_v we_o do_v what_o he_o will_v and_o follow_v what_o course_n he_o will_v have_v we_o take_v shall_v he_o be_v lord_n over_o we_o it_o be_v the_o same_o also_o with_o magistrate_n and_o with_o private_a family_n any_o mean_n that_o god_n use_v any_o admonition_n whatsoever_o find_v such_o entertainment_n as_o this_o with_o wicked_a and_o carnal_a heart_n let_v this_o suffice_v for_o a_o second_o argument_n and_o reason_n why_o wicked_a man_n be_v so_o marvelous_a opposite_a against_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n even_o then_o when_o it_o be_v most_o powerful_a in_o gainsay_v they_o and_o their_o corruption_n because_o of_o the_o pride_n of_o heart_n that_o be_v in_o all_o natural_a man_n whereby_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o stoop_v and_o submit_v to_o the_o yoke_n and_o rule_v thereof_o but_o though_o they_o be_v often_o admonish_v yet_o own_o soul_n as_o in_o a_o glass_n and_o discern_v very_o plain_o what_o kind_n of_o person_n he_o be_v what_o kind_n of_o course_n he_o lead_v in_o what_o state_n and_o condition_n he_o stand_v whether_o he_o be_v a_o gracious_a man_n or_o a_o graceless_a man_n whether_o a_o wicked_a man_n or_o one_o that_o god_n have_v a_o part_n in_o yea_o or_o no._n it_o concern_v we_o all_o my_o brethren_n very_o deep_o to_o think_v of_o it_o consider_v well_o therefore_o of_o what_o have_v be_v say_v i_o will_v not_o have_v you_o conceive_v that_o all_o this_o that_o we_o have_v speak_v be_v mere_o to_o spend_v out_o the_o hour_n no_o my_o brethren_n you_o must_v labour_v to_o bring_v your_o soul_n to_o be_v under_o the_o power_n of_o the_o truth_n deliver_v and_o know_v this_o that_o a_o lively_a hope_n and_o to_o a_o inheritance_n with_o the_o saint_n in_o light_n observe_v what_o the_o frame_n and_o temper_n of_o thy_o soul_n be_v and_o how_o it_o stand_v affect_v to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n when_o it_o be_v reveal_v to_o thy_o conscience_n if_o the_o word_n prevail_v not_o over_o thou_o and_o overpower_v thou_o if_o thy_o heart_n submit_v not_o to_o the_o sceptre_n of_o the_o lord_n christ_n and_o yield_v to_o his_o command_n certain_o thou_o be_v not_o right_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n we_o
not_o your_o heart_n with_o your_o condition_n but_o confess_v it_o confess_v thou_o have_v a_o graceless_a and_o naughty_a heart_n this_o be_v the_o next_o way_n to_o be_v a_o christian_n it_o be_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n and_o his_o word_n in_o the_o faithful_a ministry_n thereof_o yet_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n themselves_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v flesh_n have_v resistance_n in_o they_o but_o with_o this_o difference_n a_o godly_a man_n when_o he_o perceive_v his_o heart_n stubborn_a and_o rebellious_a against_o god_n in_o his_o word_n he_o yet_o notwithstanding_o join_v and_o side_v with_o the_o word_n and_o labour_v to_o oppose_v that_o corruption_n of_o the_o flesh_n so_o it_o be_v with_o saint_n paul_n in_o the_o place_n before_o name_v a_o child_n of_o god_n that_o have_v a_o holy_a disposition_n wrought_v in_o he_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n when_o he_o see_v his_o heart_n unwilling_a to_o yield_v to_o christ_n and_o his_o word_n he_o cry_v shame_n upon_o himself_o that_o after_o so_o much_o hear_v so_o many_o mercy_n receive_v so_o many_o gracious_a promise_n reveal_v to_o he_o the_o good_a word_n of_o god_n so_o often_o lay_v home_o to_o his_o conscience_n that_o his_o heart_n shall_v yet_o remain_v in_o any_o measure_n rebellious_a against_o god_n and_o therefore_o he_o rest_v not_o in_o this_o condition_n but_o take_v up_o arm_n against_o this_o rebellion_n of_o heart_n as_o well_o as_o against_o any_o corruption_n else_o whatsoever_o this_o i_o say_v be_v the_o disposition_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n but_o with_o a_o wicked_a man_n it_o be_v clean_a contrary_n so_o then_o i_o say_v though_o it_o concern_v all_o natural_a man_n in_o a_o special_a manner_n to_o suffer_v this_o word_n of_o exhortation_n but_o see_v every_o man_n even_o be_v content_v to_o be_v govern_v by_o the_o good_a word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v better_a never_o to_o have_v know_v the_o word_n of_o god_n then_o to_o have_v it_o make_v know_v and_o to_o gainsay_v and_o stand_v out_o against_o it_o let_v we_o therefore_o be_v careful_a to_o subject_v ourselves_o and_o to_o take_v up_o the_o yoke_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o give_v way_n to_o every_o truth_n reveal_v be_v willing_a and_o content_v to_o yield_v to_o whatsoever_o the_o word_n of_o god_n shall_v make_v know_v whether_o it_o declare_v what_o be_v amiss_o to_o take_v that_o away_o or_o whether_o it_o reveal_v what_o be_v to_o be_v do_v to_o practice_v that_o this_o be_v a_o bless_a frame_n and_o disposition_n of_o spirit_n and_o by_o this_o we_o shall_v come_v to_o have_v comfort_n and_o benefit_n by_o all_o our_o hear_n this_o be_v the_o only_a way_n to_o get_v that_o good_a that_o god_n intend_v in_o all_o those_o help_n and_o mean_n that_o he_o have_v appoint_v in_o his_o church_n it_o be_v the_o commendation_n of_o josiah_n that_o his_o heart_n melt_v at_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o law_n read_v 2_o king_n 22.19_o and_o i_o know_v not_o a_o great_a ornament_n to_o a_o christian_a then_o to_o have_v such_o a_o heart_n that_o look_v as_o it_o be_v with_o soft_a thing_n they_o will_v take_v any_o impression_n that_o be_v put_v upon_o they_o whatsoever_o the_o stamp_n
