holy_a and_o good_a a_o sober_a and_o right_a use_n of_o reason_n a_o courageous_a assert_v of_o our_o holy_a religion_n against_o all_o opposition_n a_o unfeigned_a love_n both_o to_o god_n and_o to_o man_n with_o a_o deep_a sense_n of_o our_o unworthiness_n and_o affectionate_a acknowledgement_n of_o our_o owe_v all_o to_o the_o divine_a bounty_n who_o be_v they_o then_o can_v think_v that_o if_o they_o do_v but_o believe_v it_o be_v no_o matter_n how_o they_o live_v and_o from_o which_o of_o all_o these_o action_n which_o make_v up_o the_o very_a be_v of_o faith_n be_v there_o so_o much_o as_o the_o least_o countenance_n to_o a_o loose_a conversation_n nay_o there_o can_v be_v strong_a obligation_n to_o a_o sober_a righteous_a and_o godly_a life_n than_o these_o be_v and_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o they_o this_o sober_a righteous_a and_o godly_a life_n do_v consist_v and_o how_o theophilus_n can_v any_o wrest_v repentance_n for_o sin_n to_o the_o further_o and_o more_o safe_a commit_n of_o sin_n shall_v the_o example_n of_o the_o thief_n on_o the_o cross_n which_o be_v write_v for_o man_n comfort_n administer_v to_o their_o presumption_n they_o consider_v not_o the_o eminency_n of_o that_o poor_a malefactor_n faith_n from_o which_o his_o repentance_n do_v spring_v it_o be_v not_o altogether_o improbable_a that_o this_o be_v the_o first_o opportunity_n he_o this_o with_o solemn_z vow_n of_o fight_v manful_o under_o his_o banner_n against_o the_o world_n the_o flesh_n and_o the_o devil_n can_v these_o say_v that_o some_o of_o the_o last_o day_n of_o their_o life_n be_v the_o first_o opportunity_n they_o have_v have_v of_o that_o faith_n which_o must_v give_v life_n to_o their_o repentance_n shall_v they_o say_v it_o the_o many_o outward_a call_v they_o have_v have_v by_o god_n bless_a word_n read_v and_o hear_v the_o many_o inward_a call_v of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n move_v they_o to_o their_o duty_n the_o many_o check_n of_o conscience_n they_o have_v feel_v in_o their_o sinful_a and_o unchristian_a practice_n will_v be_v ready_a to_o contradict_v they_o to_o their_o face_n and_o then_o for_o the_o time_n though_o they_o shall_v be_v as_o near_o their_o end_n as_o the_o thief_n be_v the_o case_n with_o these_o and_o with_o he_o be_v very_o different_a no_o hour_n be_v there_o now_o but_o in_o it_o it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o christ_n be_v rise_v from_o the_o dead_a ascend_v into_o heaven_n have_v give_v gift_n unto_o man_n and_o have_v have_v all_o power_n give_v unto_o he_o and_o of_o these_o thing_n we_o have_v have_v as_o great_a proof_n as_o can_v reasonable_o be_v desire_v which_o make_v the_o encouragement_n of_o turn_v unto_o christ_n now_o to_o be_v far_o great_a than_o in_o that_o sad_a and_o dismal_a late_a repentance_n as_o for_o those_o who_o wrought_v in_o the_o vineyard_n no_o soon_o than_o the_o eleven_o hour_n and_o yet_o be_v reward_v alike_o with_o the_o early_o it_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o those_o who_o be_v call_v no_o soon_o as_o be_v evident_a from_o matth._n 20.6.7_o about_o the_o eleven_o hour_n he_o go_v out_o and_o find_v other_o stand_v idle_a and_o say_v unto_o they_o why_o stand_v you_o idle_a they_o say_v unto_o he_o because_o no_o man_n both_o hire_v we_o where_o by_o hire_v we_o be_v to_o understand_v call_v which_o call_v may_v have_v respect_n not_o to_o be_v understand_v of_o they_o who_o have_v be_v baptise_a in_o their_o infancy_n and_o outward_o profess_v christianity_n all_o along_o have_v defer_v the_o practice_n of_o it_o till_o their_o last_o year_n for_o they_o be_v as_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v hire_v at_o the_o first_o hour_n and_o have_v idle_v it_o ever_o since_o and_o their_o idleness_n be_v to_o be_v esteem_v much_o different_a from_o that_o of_o the_o other_o the_o other_o wrought_v not_o because_o as_o yet_o they_o have_v no_o employment_n nor_o place_n in_o the_o vineyard_n but_o these_o have_v employment_n and_o place_n in_o it_o and_o be_v unfaithful_a and_o truanty_a and_o so_o may_v expect_v punishment_n for_o their_o early_a and_o continue_a neglect_n while_o the_o other_o shall_v have_v a_o full_a reward_n for_o their_o late_a labour_n late_o indeed_o yet_o as_o early_o as_o their_o call._n i_o will_v not_o say_v but_o the_o late_a obedience_n of_o those_o who_o have_v be_v early_o call_v may_v sometime_o be_v sincere_a
action_n of_o no_o authority_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o injunction_n which_o from_o god_n they_o declare_v the_o uncertainty_n theophilus_n of_o example_n next_o will_v show_v we_o that_o they_o of_o themselves_o do_v not_o oblige_v we_o how_o many_o of_o those_o example_n shall_v bind_v we_o to_o imitation_n be_v not_o where_o in_o scripture_n tell_v we_o some_o of_o they_o carry_v a_o open_a and_o that_o variety_n may_v so_o much_o alter_v the_o quality_n of_o action_n as_o to_o make_v some_o that_o be_v lawful_a to_o become_v sinful_a and_o other_o that_o we_o be_v free_a to_o do_v or_o not_o to_o do_v to_o become_v necessary_a to_o be_v do_v so_o that_o either_o we_o must_v be_v tell_v in_o how_o many_o circumstance_n such_o example_n will_v hold_v good_a and_o be_v imitable_a and_o in_o how_o many_o they_o will_v become_v unlawful_a and_o inexpedient_a or_o else_o every_o one_o must_v be_v leave_v to_o choose_v what_o example_n he_o will_v and_o to_o apply_v they_o how_o he_o think_v good_a the_o former_a be_v a_o task_n that_o no_o man_n will_v undertake_v the_o late_a will_v bring_v in_o the_o great_a confusion_n of_o practice_n while_o some_o will_v take_v the_o bad_a example_n other_o misapply_v the_o good_a and_o so_o all_o edification_n and_o unity_n will_v be_v overthrow_v and_o as_o the_o example_n be_v uncertain_a so_o be_v they_o insufficient_a and_o indeed_o so_o far_o as_o there_o be_v a_o uncertainty_n there_o be_v in_o some_o sense_n a_o insufficiency_n for_o shall_v they_o be_v never_o so_o full_a in_o themselves_o yet_o if_o man_n understanding_n shall_v general_o be_v so_o dim-sighted_a as_o that_o they_o can_v not_o through_o diversity_n of_o circumstance_n discern_v how_o to_o take_v right_a measure_n of_o their_o action_n from_o they_o they_o will_v be_v insufficient_a as_o to_o we_o but_o we_o shall_v find_v a_o great_a deficiency_n of_o example_n in_o holy_a writ_n in_o that_o there_o be_v thousand_o of_o action_n which_o be_v to_o be_v govern_v by_o religion_n as_o indeed_o all_o our_o action_n be_v of_o which_o we_o can_v find_v no_o suitable_a example_n in_o scripture_n i_o need_v not_o theophilus_n give_v you_o nor_o myself_o the_o trouble_n of_o gather_v together_o many_o instance_n of_o action_n to_o show_v what_o i_o now_o say_v let_v man_n in_o the_o diversity_n of_o calling_n that_o be_v in_o the_o world_n and_o in_o the_o many_o relation_n that_o they_o stand_v in_o unto_o other_o consider_v their_o own_o action_n and_o amid_o all_o the_o example_n of_o scripture_n they_o will_v see_v themselves_o leave_v alone_o not_o have_v a_o sure_a light_n from_o any_o of_o they_o whence_o from_o the_o uncertainty_n and_o insufficiency_n of_o the_o example_n as_o well_o as_o from_o the_o want_n of_o authority_n in_o the_o person_n no_o example_n be_v obligatory_a unto_o we_o nor_o to_o be_v imitate_v any_o further_a than_o they_o have_v the_o law_n of_o christ_n for_o their_o rule_n and_o warrant_n theoph._n but_o eubulus_n our_o bless_a lord_n want_v no_o authority_n in_o his_o person_n and_o his_o example_n be_v perfect_a and_o what_o other_o example_n can_v not_o do_v his_o may_v may_v it_o not_o eubul_n we_o will_v therefore_o consider_v the_o action_n of_o our_o lord_n than_o who_o there_o never_o be_v neither_o can_v be_v a_o better_a pattern_n in_o the_o world_n and_o yet_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o none_o of_o they_o from_o his_o example_n mere_o and_o without_o a_o law_n do_v lay_v a_o absolute_a obligation_n upon_o we_o to_o imitate_v they_o 1._o some_o of_o they_o be_v miraculous_a action_n and_o as_o such_o we_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o imitate_v they_o for_o no_o man_n be_v oblige_v to_o do_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v beyond_o the_o power_n which_o god_n ever_o give_v he_o or_o have_v promise_v to_o bestow_v upon_o he_o such_o action_n as_o these_o be_v the_o accomplishment_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n above_o all_o other_o neither_o have_v he_o nor_o ever_o will_v he_o impart_v the_o ability_n of_o do_v the_o like_a unless_o upon_o extraordinary_a occasion_n and_o for_o the_o obtain_v the_o chief_a end_n the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n when_o they_o can_v reasonable_o be_v compass_v without_o such_o miraculous_a act_n as_o at_o the_o first_o spread_v the_o gospel_n they_o can_v not_o but_o ordinary_o none_o will_v be_v think_v deficient_a in_o their_o action_n because_o they_o turn_v not_o water_n into_o wine_n cure_v not_o disease_n with_o a_o word_n give_v not_o eye_n to_o the_o blind_a leg_n to_o the_o lame_a and_o life_n to_o the_o dead_a 2._o some_o of_o our_o lord_n action_n be_v such_o as_o proceed_v from_o that_o authority_n and_o prerogative_n which_o as_o he_o be_v a_o prince_n do_v belong_v unto_o he_o of_o this_o sort_n be_v his_o send_n for_o the_o ass_n and_o colt_n without_o so_o much_o as_o have_v the_o owner_n leave_v or_o acquaint_v he_o with_o what_o he_o do_v matth._n 21.2_o as_o also_o be_v his_o drive_v the_o buyer_n and_o seller_n with_o a_o scourge_n out_o of_o the_o temple_n and_o overthrow_v the_o table_n of_o the_o money-changer_n mat._n 21.12_o neither_o be_v these_o to_o be_v imitate_v by_o we_o as_o we_o be_v private_a men._n whosoever_o shall_v take_v away_o that_o which_o be_v another_o without_o his_o leave_n and_o licence_n and_o shall_v use_v it_o as_o their_o own_o will_v be_v guilty_a of_o injustice_n and_o so_o whosoever_o as_o a_o private_a person_n shall_v take_v upon_o he_o magisterial_o to_o new_a model_n the_o church_n or_o the_o discipline_n thereof_o he_o usurp_v that_o authority_n which_o be_v due_a unto_o our_o lord_n and_o be_v impart_v to_o some_o only_a who_o be_v right_o call_v thereunto_o and_o he_o deserve_v the_o scourge_n which_o our_o lord_n make_v rather_o than_o any_o praise_n for_o his_o action_n in_o this_o kind_n 3._o some_o action_n of_o our_o lord_n be_v such_o as_o belong_v to_o his_o mediatory_a office_n by_o which_o he_o intercee_v with_o god_n for_o man_n not_o in_o a_o submiss_a and_o precarious_a manner_n but_o by_o way_n of_o covenant_n and_o merit_n these_o we_o must_v not_o imitate_v he_o that_o shall_v mediate_v with_o god_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o his_o own_o merit_n as_o if_o he_o have_v do_v whatever_o be_v require_v of_o he_o to_o do_v and_o also_o have_v supererogated_a and_o so_o may_v claim_v as_o of_o right_a a_o reward_n to_o himself_o and_o somewhat_o over_o and_o above_o which_o he_o may_v impart_v to_o other_o who_o have_v be_v deficient_a in_o their_o duty_n and_o can_v therefore_o expect_v nothing_o such_o a_o one_o imitate_v christ_n not_o otherwise_o than_o to_o become_v a_o traitor_n to_o he_o and_o go_v about_o to_o share_v in_o that_o glory_n which_o our_o lord_n will_v not_o part_v with_o to_o another_o nothing_o but_o submission_n be_v to_o be_v show_v and_o imperfection_n acknowledge_v by_o we_o for_o we_o have_v do_v in_o every_o thing_n less_o than_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o do_v and_o so_o must_v account_v ourselves_o less_o than_o the_o least_o of_o god_n mercy_n 4._o some_o action_n of_o our_o lord_n be_v moral_a such_o as_o respect_v righteousness_n of_o life_n and_o these_o we_o be_v to_o imitate_v but_o yet_o these_o we_o be_v not_o oblige_v unto_o mere_o by_o his_o example_n now_o these_o be_v such_o as_o may_v be_v reduce_v either_o to_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n or_o else_o to_o the_o gospel_n as_o particular_o belong_v thereunto_o those_o action_n which_o he_o do_v relate_v to_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n we_o also_o be_v to_o do_v such_o be_v the_o worship_v of_o god_n the_o be_v just_a unto_o man_n temperate_a in_o our_o own_o person_n and_o such_o like_a but_o the_o law_n within_o we_o which_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v be_v write_v in_o our_o heart_n lay_v a_o obligation_n upon_o we_o before_o to_o do_v these_o thing_n and_o so_o the_o duty_n of_o perform_v
