prcove_v it_o very_o strong_o and_o pithelie_o the_o first_o of_o they_o be_v take_v from_o a_o comparison_n or_o similitude_n which_o he_o set_v down_o thus_o if_o a_o brother_n or_o a_o sister_n be_v naked_a and_o destitute_a of_o daily_a food_n and_o one_o of_o you_o say_v unto_o they_o depart_v in_o peace_n warm_a yourselves_o and_o sill_z your_o belly_n notwithstanding_o you_o give_v they_o not_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v needful_a to_o the_o booie_n what_o help_v it_o this_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o the_o matter_n there_o come_v unto_o you_o a_o poor_a man_n or_o a_o poor_a woman_n which_o lack_v clothes_n and_o sustenance_n you_o give_v they_o gentle_a and_o fair_a word_n god_n help_v you_o god_n succour_v you_o and_o send_v you_o relief_n but_o you_o give_v they_o nothing_o can_v this_o help_v the_o poor_a man_n or_o the_o poor_a woman_n shall_v they_o not_o for_o all_o your_o love_a word_n starve_v for_o cold_a and_o die_v for_o hunger_n if_o every_o man_n shall_v serve_v they_o so_o and_o give_v they_o no_o other_o alm_n why_o do_v you_o not_o see_v then_o that_o as_o this_o alm_n and_o liberality_n to_o the_o poor_a which_o be_v but_o in_o fair_a speech_n be_v cold_a and_o do_v not_o help_v so_o in_o like_a manner_n the_o faith_n which_o be_v but_o in_o word_n and_o outward_a profession_n of_o speech_n although_o it_o be_v with_o never_o so_o great_a brag_n be_v dead_a and_o then_o further_o why_o do_v you_o not_o understand_v that_o a_o thing_n which_o be_v weak_a and_o dead_a in_o itself_o can_v by_o no_o mean_n have_v power_n to_o give_v life_n and_o to_o save_v but_o observe_v it_o a_o little_a better_o thus_o the_o comparison_n stand_v if_o that_o liberality_n which_o be_v only_o in_o word_n be_v cold_a or_o dead_a and_o do_v not_o profit_v the_o poor_a nor_o make_v he_o a_o liberal_a man_n which_o use_v it_o than_o it_o follow_v also_o that_o that_o faith_n which_o be_v only_o in_o speech_n be_v dead_a and_o therefore_o can_v save_v or_o profit_v he_o which_o have_v it_o if_o word_n only_o can_v profit_v or_o cause_v it_o to_o be_v faith_n why_o shall_v not_o word_n also_o profit_v the_o poor_a man_n or_o woman_n which_o be_v destitute_a if_o word_n only_o can_v make_v a_o faithful_a man_n why_o shall_v not_o word_n make_v a_o liberal_a man_n if_o for_o a_o man_n to_o say_v he_o have_v faith_n be_v of_o that_o power_n to_o do_v the_o great_a thing_n as_o namely_o to_o couple_v we_o to_o christ_n to_o raise_v the_o soul_n from_o death_n to_o life_n to_o put_v the_o devil_n to_o flight_n &_o to_o overcome_v the_o world_n shall_v it_o not_o be_v able_a to_o do_v the_o lesser_a that_o be_v to_o say_v so_o far_o to_o prevail_v with_o we_o &_o to_o have_v such_o power_n in_o we_o as_o to_o bring_v forth_o good_a work_n dear_a brethren_n know_v that_o if_o it_o be_v alive_a &_o do_v the_o former_a it_o must_v needs_o do_v this_o if_o it_o do_v not_o this_o latter_a they_o sure_o it_o be_v dead_a and_o can_v do_v nothing_o to_o save_v us._n this_o be_v a_o most_o plain_a and_o forcible_a reason_n to_o prove_v that_o the_o faith_n of_o a_o carnal_a and_o worldly_a gospeller_n be_v but_o a_o dead_a show_n of_o faith_n and_o therefore_o he_o be_v not_o justify_v nor_o save_v neither_o can_v be_v justify_v nor_o save_v thereby_o see_v it_o have_v no_o life_n in_o itself_o to_o work_v and_o to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n it_o can_v give_v life_n unto_o he_o for_o how_o shall_v it_o bring_v that_o which_o it_o have_v not_o to_o set_v it_o forth_o more_o plain_o thus_o the_o apostle_n add_v but_o some_o man_n may_v say_v thou_o have_v the_o faith_n and_o i_o have_v work_n show_v i_o thy_o faith_n by_o thy_o work_n and_o i_o will_v show_v thou_o my_o faith_n by_o my_o work_n he_o show_v here_o how_o every_o simple_a man_n which_o be_v a_o true_a christian_a may_v be_v able_a to_o deal_v against_o the_o great_a and_o most_o skilful_a doctor_n that_o be_v to_o prove_v that_o he_o have_v no_o faith_n if_o he_o have_v not_o good_a work_n for_o when_o he_o say_v some_o man_n will_v say_v it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v any_o man_n may_v say_v thou_o have_v faith_n that_o be_v thou_o make_v thy_o boast_n that_o thou_o have_v faith_n show_v it_o by_o thy_o work_n because_o faith_n be_v a_o holy_a thing_n wrought_v by_o god_n spirit_n and_o a_o lively_a and_o mighty_a thing_n therefore_o it_o can_v be_v without_o holy_a and_o good_a action_n for_o as_o a_o man_n be_v know_v to_o be_v dead_a when_o he_o do_v not_o breathe_v can_v stir_v see_v hear_v and_o such_o like_a and_o contrariwise_o when_o he_o do_v any_o of_o these_o he_o be_v know_v to_o be_v alive_a even_o so_o be_v it_o with_o faith_n if_o it_o can_v or_o do_v bring_v forth_o no_o good_a work_n then_o be_v it_o dead_a on_o the_o contrary_a part_n the_o action_n and_o stir_v thereof_o do_v show_v it_o to_o be_v alive_a this_o be_v a_o strong_a place_n against_o all_o those_o which_o do_v not_o only_o vaunt_v themselves_o of_o a_o vain_a and_o dead_a belief_n but_o also_o will_v leave_v no_o mark_n to_o know_v who_o be_v of_o god_n and_o who_o be_v of_o the_o devil_n let_v a_o man_n take_v they_o tardy_a in_o any_o foul_a vice_n wherein_o they_o wallow_v and_o say_v unto_o they_o you_o be_v out_o of_o the_o way_n you_o have_v not_o the_o true_a belief_n in_o god_n you_o be_v covetous_a you_o be_v a_o worldling_n you_o be_v a_o drunkard_n and_o a_o adulterer_n or_o such_o like_a their_o answer_n be_v ready_a who_o make_v you_o able_a to_o judge_v can_v you_o tell_v how_o beastly_a sin_n that_o it_o will_v cause_v we_o to_o think_v upon_o this_o say_n when_o the_o son_n of_o man_n come_v shall_v he_o find_v faith_n upon_o the_o earth_n for_o if_o this_o be_v true_a as_o it_o be_v most_o true_a because_o god_n himself_o have_v set_v it_o down_o that_o the_o faith_n which_o be_v without_o good_a work_n be_v dead_a and_o those_o be_v infidel_n which_o like_o bruit_n beast_n care_v not_o but_o for_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n and_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o commit_v all_o kind_n of_o evil_a work_n do_v you_o suppose_v that_o if_o the_o son_n of_o man_n shall_v now_o come_v that_o he_o shall_v find_v any_o great_a store_n of_o faith_n alas_o alas_o how_o many_o be_v the_o sinful_a deed_n of_o the_o most_o man_n which_o show_v that_o they_o have_v no_o faith_n how_o few_o be_v the_o good_a work_n and_o how_o weak_a even_o in_o the_o small_a remnant_n of_o the_o godly_a which_o do_v declare_v how_o poor_a and_o slender_a their_o faith_n god_n have_v choose_v man_n and_o man_n come_v to_o feel_v and_o to_o know_v this_o and_o therefore_o because_o it_o be_v a_o true_a doctrine_n they_o say_v also_o that_o they_o themselves_o be_v sure_a that_o god_n have_v choose_v they_o but_o when_o they_o take_v not_o the_o way_n to_o become_v sure_a which_o s._n peter_n have_v here_o set_v down_o but_o go_v in_o a_o contrary_a path_n and_o be_v spot_v with_o filthy_a crime_n we_o may_v bold_o say_v they_o be_v liar_n for_o although_o they_o brag_v with_o their_o tongue_n of_o that_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v yet_o there_o be_v a_o bird_n in_o their_o breast_n which_o do_v sing_v in_o a_o contrary_a note_n &_o tell_v they_o plain_o what_o they_o be_v another_o kind_n of_o man_n there_o be_v which_o in_o no_o case_n can_v be_v seem_v to_o be_v forward_a corn_n and_o such_o as_o will_v yield_v to_o the_o husbandman_n a_o plentiful_a harvest_n but_o because_o the_o root_n can_v spread_v itself_o deep_a enough_o to_o suck_v ivice_n out_o of_o the_o ground_n for_o the_o nourishment_n of_o the_o blade_n when_o the_o parch_a heat_n of_o the_o sun_n light_v upon_o it_o than_o it_o be_v dry_v up_o and_o scorch_v and_o die_v &_o never_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n some_o other_o do_v fall_v among_o thorn_n there_o be_v depth_n of_o earth_n for_o the_o feed_n to_o grow_v so_o that_o it_o spring_v up_o and_o not_o only_o a_o blade_n but_o also_o a_o stalk_n and_o come_v so_o far_o as_o to_o have_v the_o ear_n but_o the_o thorn_n grow_v up_o with_o it_o overshadow_v and_o choke_v it_o in_o so_o much_o that_o the_o corn_n in_o the_o ear_n can_v have_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o sun_n to_o make_v it_o ripe_a therefore_o the_o fruit_n that_o it_o seem_v to_o bring_v forth_o come_v to_o naught_o some_o other_o seed_n consider_v whether_o we_o be_v not_o one_o of_o those_o three_o evil_a sort_n of_o ground_n which_o receive_v the_o seed_n but_o bring_v forth_o no_o fruit_n think_v we_o be_v well_o if_o we_o profess_v the_o gospel_n or_o hear_v it_o after_o any_o sort_n let_v we_o go_v forward_o those_o which_o receive_v the_o seed_n by_o the_o way_n side_n be_v they_o which_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o do_v not_o understand_v it_o then_o come_v the_o evil_a one_o or_o as_o s._n luke_n say_v the_o devil_n and_o take_v it_o away_o from_o their_o heart_n in_o these_o first_o kind_n of_o hearer_n we_o above_o uncover_v for_o like_a as_o when_o a_o man_n cast_v a_o handful_n of_o corn_n upon_o a_o very_a hard_a and_o smooth_a path_n it_o be_v all_o one_o as_o if_o it_o be_v cast_v upon_o a_o pavement_n so_o also_o through_o the_o custom_n and_o deceitfulness_n of_o sin_v the_o devil_n have_v make_v the_o heart_n of_o these_o unmeete_a to_o receive_v the_o heavenly_a seed_n of_o the_o word_n and_o look_v how_o you_o see_v crow_n &_o other_o fowl_n follow_v the_o heel_n of_o the_o sour_a to_o pick_v up_o and_o devour_v such_o kernel_n as_o do_v lie_v uncover_v in_o like_a manner_n do_v the_o devil_n come_v like_o greedy_a fowl_n into_o the_o assembly_n where_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v preach_v to_o take_v it_o away_o from_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o people_n that_o it_o may_v not_o grow_v there_o this_o peradventure_o will_v seem_v strange_a to_o some_o that_o satan_n shall_v have_v any_o entrance_n into_o the_o church_n among_o god_n people_n especial_o when_o they_o be_v about_o the_o best_a and_o most_o holy_a exercise_n of_o hear_v the_o word_n &_o of_o prayer_n how_o strange_a soever_o it_o may_v seem_v and_o how_o many_o soever_o have_v be_v or_o be_v of_o that_o fond_a and_o doltish_a opinion_n to_o think_v that_o the_o devil_n have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o they_o or_o come_v not_o near_o they_o when_o they_o be_v about_o these_o holy_a thing_n we_o be_v to_o believe_v christ_n who_o tell_v we_o the_o contrary_a and_o we_o be_v wise_o to_o consider_v that_o when_o we_o be_v nigh_a that_o which_o shall_v do_v our_o soul_n good_a then_o be_v this_o enemy_n ready_a at_o hand_n &_o do_v most_o busy_o bestir_v he_o if_o this_o be_v not_o utter_v by_o our_o saviour_n christ_n himself_o we_o may_v wonder_v &_o for_o my_o own_o part_n i_o will_v not_o cease_v wonder_v to_o see_v many_o hearer_n which_o carry_v away_o almost_o nothing_o which_o be_v to_o any_o purpose_n let_v a_o man_n tell_v a_o long_a story_n in_o a_o worldly_a matter_n they_o have_v wit_n enough_o to_o recite_v it_o in_o order_n again_o &_o to_o keep_v it_o in_o remembrance_n a_o long_a time_n after_o but_o let_v the_o preacher_n speak_v never_o so_o plain_a although_o they_o sit_v &_o look_v he_o in_o that_o face_n yet_o if_o you_o inquire_v of_o they_o so_o soon_o as_o they_o be_v out_o at_o the_o church_n door_n you_o shall_v easy_o perceive_v that_o as_o the_o common_a say_n be_v it_o go_v in_o at_o the_o one_o ear_n and_o out_o at_o the_o other_o they_o will_v say_v peradventure_o after_o this_o manner_n it_o be_v a_o good_a sermon_n i_o will_v we_o can_v follow_v it_o he_o say_v very_o well_o he_o be_v a_o perfect_a ready_a man_n in_o the_o pulpit_n but_o ask_v what_o doctrine_n do_v he_o handle_v then_o be_v they_o at_o let_v we_o therefore_o dear_o belove_v if_o we_o desire_v not_o to_o be_v of_o the_o number_n of_o these_o mark_v well_o the_o subtle_a sleight_n and_o policy_n of_o the_o devil_n how_o he_o handle_v and_o convey_v the_o matter_n with_o this_o kind_n of_o people_n there_o be_v no_o doubt_n of_o this_o but_o that_o if_o he_o can_v he_o will_v draw_v away_o the_o mind_n from_o come_v to_o the_o sermon_n one_o pelt_v let_v or_o other_o must_v come_v in_o the_o way_n if_o there_o be_v no_o worldly_a business_n to_o be_v do_v than_o a_o pair_n of_o card_n or_o table_n or_o some_o honest_a recreation_n it_o shall_v be_v now_o no_o good_a civility_n to_o part_v company_n when_o friend_n be_v meet_v together_o this_o be_v the_o sure_a way_n if_o it_o may_v be_v obtain_v but_o what_o if_o he_o fail_v herein_o they_o come_v to_o the_o place_n where_o the_o seed_n shall_v be_v sow_v sit_v down_o and_o mind_n to_o hear_v then_o the_o next_o way_n be_v to_o come_v with_o they_o and_o to_o attend_v at_o their_o elbow_n seek_v how_o to_o deprive_v they_o of_o the_o word_n now_o his_o best_a way_n be_v to_o bring_v they_o asleep_a because_o they_o be_v then_o as_o good_a be_v absent_a or_o into_o a_o slumber_n that_o they_o may_v hear_v
only_o a_o sound_n and_o a_o confuse_a hum_v without_o any_o perseverance_n of_o the_o thing_n utter_v or_o else_o when_o they_o hear_v any_o perfect_a sentence_n or_o a_o few_o sentence_n they_o know_v not_o why_o they_o be_v utter_v because_o they_o hear_v not_o that_o which_o go_v before_o such_o as_o be_v not_o so_o drowsy_a head_v be_v wakeful_a he_o seek_v still_o to_o convey_v some_o thought_n into_o their_o mind_n whereabout_o they_o may_v be_v occupy_v and_o their_o understanding_n draw_v away_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n be_v light_n and_o inconstant_a if_o he_o can_v put_v very_a hard_a work_n that_o we_o go_v to_o encounter_v with_o satan_n hand_n to_o hand_n who_o seek_v then_o most_o busy_o to_o steal_v away_o our_o heart_n that_o he_o may_v make_v that_o word_n flesh_n and_o hardness_n of_o my_o heart_n that_o my_o mind_n may_v be_v keep_v steadfast_a upon_o the_o word_n that_o i_o may_v receive_v it_o with_o all_o reverence_n &_o fear_n as_o the_o word_n of_o the_o great_a &_o glorious_a god_n not_o to_o judge_v of_o it_o at_o my_o own_o pleasure_n but_o to_o crave_v wisdom_n from_o the_o lord_n not_o to_o hear_v it_o and_o to_o let_v it_o go_v but_o devil_n and_o curse_v he_o as_o though_o he_o shall_v not_o come_v nigh_o they_o yet_o see_v it_o be_v no_o mortal_a man_n but_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n himself_o who_o tell_v we_o here_o that_o the_o devil_n be_v not_o only_o nigh_o but_o in_o these_o kind_n of_o hearer_n even_o harden_v their_o heart_n and_o blind_a their_o eye_n we_o ought_v most_o constant_o to_o believe_v it_o he_o that_o shall_v deep_o weigh_v the_o estate_n of_o our_o church_n at_o this_o day_n will_v soon_o be_v bring_v to_o confess_v that_o there_o be_v many_o of_o this_o first_o sort_n of_o hearer_n they_o shall_v perceive_v it_o right_a will_n by_o this_o that_o they_o be_v not_o able_a in_o any_o wise_a to_o judge_v or_o put_v difference_n between_o sound_n &_o sincere_a preach_n and_o vain_a prattle_a they_o know_v not_o when_o the_o preacher_n do_v minister_v unto_o they_o wholesome_a food_n and_o when_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o chaff_n and_o wind_n you_o shall_v hear_v they_o high_o commend_v some_o sermon_n as_o a_o matter_n worthy_a to_o be_v write_v in_o letter_n of_o gold_n when_o as_o in_o deed_n it_o deserve_v not_o so_o much_o as_o to_o be_v note_v with_o a_o coal_n i_o speak_v not_o of_o those_o silly_a wretch_n which_o be_v never_o as_o yet_o acquaint_v with_o preach_v for_o it_o be_v no_o great_a marvel_v though_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o discern_v chalk_n from_o cheese_n or_o be_v blind_a for_o to_o judge_v of_o colour_n but_o to_o such_o as_o of_o long_a time_n have_v be_v hearer_n and_o yet_o never_o the_o wise_a because_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o judge_v when_o sound_a and_o necessary_a conclusion_n be_v draw_v out_o of_o the_o word_n but_o all_o be_v one_o with_o they_o whether_o the_o reason_n that_o be_v make_v be_v good_a or_o bad_a that_o they_o be_v jolly_a professor_n when_o they_o have_v but_o a_o little_a taste_v of_o the_o word_n &_o be_v no_o more_o but_o empty_a barrel_n which_o give_v a_o great_a sound_n here_o than_o we_o be_v set_v a_o work_n with_o great_a toil_n to_o have_v this_o same_o hard_a stony_a ground_n make_v soft_a and_o fit_a to_o receive_v this_o heavenly_a seed_n and_o he_o which_o be_v not_o lord_n &_o to_o open_v our_o heart_n in_o such_o sort_n that_o he_o may_v dig_v in_o they_o and_o thrust_v in_o his_o spade_n to_o the_o bottom_n for_o otherwise_o it_o can_v go_v well_o with_o us._n beyond_o they_o and_o to_o come_v nigh_o to_o eternal_a life_n for_o here_o the_o word_n do_v grow_v &_o have_v root_n so_o deep_a that_o it_o spring_v forth_o so_o far_o that_o christ_n faith_n it_o grow_v up_o and_o the_o thorn_n grow_v up_o with_o it_o the_o stalk_n do_v shoot_v forth_o the_o ear_n and_o lack_v but_o ripe_n for_o this_o may_v be_v prove_v by_o saint_n luke_n who_o say_v that_o they_o be_v not_o telesphorountes_n that_o be_v such_o as_o bear_v ripe_a and_o timely_a fruit_n for_o these_o professor_n do_v many_o good_a work_n and_o seem_v to_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o that_o in_o such_o wise_a that_o man_n can_v always_o discern_v they_o but_o think_v their_o deed_n to_o be_v notable_a but_o christ_n jesus_n do_v show_v that_o their_o work_n before_o god_n who_o only_o can_v be_v deceive_v be_v as_o corn_n which_o lack_v ripe_n which_o be_v overshadow_a with_o bush_n wither_v in_o the_o ear_n and_o come_v to_o naught_o this_o be_v a_o dangerous_a case_n if_o we_o look_v not_o to_o it_o that_o a_o man_n may_v hear_v the_o gospel_n preach_v carry_v it_o away_o be_v move_v thereby_o to_o do_v many_o good_a work_n and_o yet_o be_v damn_v he_o be_v a_o thousand_o fold_n mad_a therefore_o which_o do_v not_o look_v to_o himself_o in_o this_o point_n to_o try_v what_o soundness_n there_o be_v in_o the_o fruit_n of_o his_o faith_n and_o how_o sincere_o he_o do_v embrace_v god_n word_n as_o before_o i_o say_v that_o some_o will_v object_v &_o say_v this_o will_v destroy_v the_o faith_n so_o be_o i_o sure_a that_o here_o it_o will_v be_v say_v much_o more_o because_o this_o seem_v to_o take_v away_o the_o sure_a trial_n of_o faith_n if_o a_o man_n may_v not_o by_o and_o by_o say_v i_o have_v good_a work_n therefore_o i_o have_v the_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n i_o answer_v that_o whosoever_o have_v any_o good_a work_n in_o he_o the_o same_o have_v the_o true_a faith_n which_o have_v bring_v forth_o that_o good_a work_n because_o it_o be_v impossible_a without_o faith_n to_o do_v any_o good_a thing_n or_o to_o have_v any_o good_a motion_n or_o intent_n but_o withal_o i_o say_v that_o it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o seem_v good_a before_o man_n and_o another_o thing_n for_o to_o be_v good_a indeed_o before_o god_n in_o outward_a appearance_n there_o be_v little_a difference_n between_o the_o good_a deed_n of_o they_o which_o fear_v god_n sincere_o &_o the_o untimely_a fruit_n of_o worldling_n but_o god_n who_o eye_n do_v not_o look_v upon_o the_o outward_a show_n but_o the_o inward_a affection_n see_v which_o proceed_v of_o faith_n and_o which_o do_v proceed_v of_o vain_a glory_n or_o some_o other_o sinister_a respect_n and_o put_v as_o great_a difference_n between_o they_o as_o he_o do_v between_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o cain_n and_o abel_n we_o must_v take_v heed_n then_o that_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v ripe_a &_o timely_a otherwise_o they_o be_v good_a but_o in_o show_n we_o must_v come_v then_o to_o see_v first_o what_o these_o thorn_n be_v in_o s._n matt._n they_o be_v call_v the_o care_n of_o this_o world_n &_o the_o deceitfulnes_n of_o riches_n in_o s._n luk._n the_o care_n of_o riches_n &_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n and_o in_o very_a deed_n these_o thorn_n do_v grow_v together_o for_o be_v it_o not_o for_o the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n there_o will_v be_v no_o care_n of_o riches_n he_o which_o do_v seek_v greedy_o for_o wealth_n it_o be_v either_o because_o he_o will_v be_v able_a to_o have_v wherwithal_o to_o fill_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o to_o pamper_v his_o body_n delicate_o or_o else_o to_o setforth_o himself_o in_o pride_n &_o to_o climb_v ambitious_o unto_o honour_n for_o so_o long_o as_o a_o man_n do_v take_v pleasure_n in_o any_o of_o these_o so_o long_o he_o be_v covetous_a &_o rake_v together_o so_o much_o that_o as_o the_o common_a sai_v be_v he_o rake_v up_o the_o devil_n &_o all_o what_o must_v we_o do_v then_o our_o heart_n be_v as_o a_o ground_n that_o be_v rank_a &_o bring_v forth_o many_o weed_n we_o be_v set_v a_o work_n as_o god_n speak_v by_o his_o prophet_n jeremy_n chap_n 4.4_o plough_v up_o your_o fallow_a &_o sow_v not_o among_o the_o thorn_n we_o must_v put_v all_o diligence_n &_o care_n that_o our_o heart_n may_v be_v rid_v of_o such_o noisome_a weed_n as_o will_v choke_v the_o alas_o poor_a man_n which_o will_v fain_o come_v to_o god_n &_o yet_o be_v glue_v to_o the_o world_n they_o offer_v one_o hand_n to_o christ_n &_o the_o other_o to_o the_o devil_n they_o can_v talk_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o yet_o be_v lead_v by_o the_o flesh_n the_o gospel_n be_v in_o their_o mouth_n and_o covetousness_n lodge_v in_o their_o heart_n their_o work_n glister_v &_o be_v green_a before_o man_n &_o be_v wither_v before_o god_n they_o seem_v to_o be_v faithful_a &_o be_v faithless_a to_o be_v heir_n of_o glory_n &_o yet_o be_v the_o child_n of_o confusion_n there_o be_v great_a plenty_n of_o these_o hearer_n &_o special_o in_o such_o place_n where_o there_o be_v wealth_n &_o honour_n how_o many_o fall_n away_o choke_v with_o the_o world_n and_o yet_o we_o be_v not_o afraid_a of_o ourselves_o to_o take_v heed_n that_o we_o stand_v fast_o a_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n it_o be_v that_o we_o have_v not_o only_o the_o doctrine_n lay_v before_o we_o but_o also_o fearful_a example_n so_o that_o we_o may_v buy_v our_o wit_n with_o other_o man_n cost_n for_o when_o we_o see_v the_o world_n with_o delight_n and_o pleasure_n with_o covetousness_n and_o ambition_n to_o carry_v away_o those_o which_o profess_v the_o gospel_n be_v not_o our_o own_o matter_n in_o hand_n be_v not_o we_o make_v of_o the_o same_o mettle_n they_o be_v do_v not_o the_o world_n assault_v we_o as_o it_o do_v they_o yes_o and_o we_o shall_v be_v overcome_v also_o if_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o mercy_n upon_o us._n the_o hardness_n of_o this_o work_n ought_v not_o to_o discourage_v or_o make_v we_o slack_v but_o hear_v what_o christ_n say_v who_o we_o ought_v to_o believe_v the_o more_o hard_a the_o more_o we_o be_v to_o stir_v up_o ourselves_o unless_o we_o make_v small_a reckon_n of_o the_o salvation_n of_o our_o soul_n he_o that_o shall_v yield_v &_o

save_v he_o dear_o belove_v we_o must_v be_v sure_o persuade_v of_o this_o that_o as_o there_o be_v many_o godly_a man_n so_o they_o have_v attain_v it_o with_o great_a labour_n and_o toil_n yea_o they_o be_v still_o set_v a_o work_n &_o can_v come_v to_o a_o end_n because_o these_o thorn_n can_v be_v utter_o root_v out_o those_o be_v great_o oversee_v which_o think_v it_o to_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n to_o profess_v christ_n unto_o salvation_n and_o make_v no_o further_o account_v but_o to_o be_v gospeler_n at_o ease_n if_o they_o can_v vanquish_v in_o disputation_n to_o think_v they_o be_v reconcile_v then_o shall_v these_o flesh_n lie_v epicure_n and_o vain_a proud_a man_n come_v to_o their_o happiness_n when_o christ_n shall_v deny_v that_o which_o he_o have_v here_o utter_v then_o shall_v these_o be_v true_a believer_n let_v man_n therefore_o take_v heed_n that_o they_o be_v not_o deceive_v nor_o make_v slack_a in_o look_v to_o the_o fruit_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o that_o such_o ignorant_a atheist_n as_o neither_o know_v nor_o desire_v to_o know_v any_o thing_n above_o this_o world_n be_v very_o far_o from_o god_n although_o they_o will_v seem_v with_o their_o mouth_n and_o lip_n to_o draw_v near_o unto_o he_o for_o if_o this_o matter_n be_v well_o observe_v man_n will_v not_o regard_v nor_o have_v those_o man_n in_o estimation_n to_o be_v good_a and_o honest_a who_o be_v very_a dog_n or_o swine_n not_o regard_v the_o precious_a pearl_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o ready_a to_o bark_v and_o bite_v at_o those_o which_o bring_v it_o let_v a_o man_n inquire_v thus_o not_o of_o a_o few_o but_o of_o the_o great_a part_n of_o man_n how_o say_v you_o to_o such_o a_o man_n what_o think_v you_o of_o he_o he_o be_v say_v they_o a_o very_a good_a man_n a_o good_a nature_a man_n a_o gentle_a person_n trusty_a to_o his_o friend_n sure_a of_o his_o word_n and_o do_v keep_v as_o good_a a_o house_n as_o any_o man_n of_o his_o call_n in_o all_o this_o as_o the_o swine_n in_o the_o sty_n a_o great_a deal_n behind_o these_o unprofitable_a hearer_n which_o be_v castaway_n and_o yet_o forsooth_o being_n very_a bruit_n beast_n before_o god_n in_o the_o state_n they_o be_v in_o yet_o unless_o the_o lord_n call_v they_o to_o be_v zealous_a of_o his_o glory_n they_o must_v be_v repute_v for_o the_o best_a man_n our_o field_n be_v full_a of_o such_o cattle_n as_o these_o &_o if_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o put_v to_o his_o help_a hand_n our_o case_n be_v very_o miserable_a if_o any_o of_o those_o which_o be_v so_o zealous_a to_o hear_v that_o they_o will_v to_o their_o hindrance_n in_o worldly_a matter_n leave_v on_o their_o business_n &_o follow_v preach_v as_o these_o which_o flock_v to_o hear_v christ_n be_v yet_o nevertheless_o reject_v because_o they_o do_v not_o sincere_o as_o they_o shall_v what_o shall_v we_o say_v of_o those_o which_o will_v not_o step_v out_o at_o their_o door_n even_o when_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v unless_o it_o be_v to_o sit_v at_o card_n or_o table_n if_o such_o a_o man_n may_v be_v damn_v as_o be_v move_v with_o some_o delight_n when_o he_o hear_v the_o word_n preach_v what_o shall_v we_o for_o temperance_n be_v conversant_a about_o pleasure_n and_o delight_n yes_o very_o we_o shall_v plain_o see_v that_o there_o be_v great_a cause_n for_o which_o he_o join_v every_o one_o of_o these_o virtue_n together_o and_o first_o to_o begin_v with_o this_o you_o be_v to_o note_v that_o continence_n be_v not_o conversant_a alone_o about_o the_o delight_n of_o the_o body_n but_o also_o of_o the_o mind_n so_o that_o in_o seek_v knowledge_n which_o we_o must_v do_v very_o eager_o we_o be_v to_o take_v heed_n of_o these_o extreme_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o a_o continent_n mind_n our_o own_o judgement_n that_o we_o will_v stand_v in_o defence_n of_o that_o which_o we_o have_v once_o like_v and_o not_o admit_v any_o reason_n to_o the_o contrary_a both_o these_o be_v contrary_a to_o a_o continent_n mind_n and_o both_o of_o they_o enemy_n to_o true_a knowledge_n therefore_o we_o be_v warn_v here_o in_o our_o diligent_a search_n for_o knowledge_n to_o take_v heed_n that_o mock_n which_o they_o will_v use_v their_o bold_a abuse_n of_o god_n word_n their_o arrogant_a presumption_n which_o cause_v they_o to_o prattle_v very_o fast_o even_o they_o know_v not_o what_o or_o else_o we_o shall_v be_v hury_v hither_o and_o thither_o upon_o rock_n and_o make_v shipwreck_n of_o our_o mildness_n and_o so_o mar_v and_o disgrace_v the_o good_a cause_n which_o we_o have_v in_o hand_n for_o wicked_a man_n will_v judge_v all_o to_o proceed_v of_o rancour_n and_o anger_n and_o ascribe_v all_o to_o choler_n and_o so_o by_o this_o mean_n there_o be_v procure_v some_o dishonour_n to_o god_n who_o shall_v great_o be_v honour_v if_o we_o can_v meek_o as_o his_o apostle_n will_v instruct_v those_o which_o be_v contrary_a mind_v prove_v if_o god_n at_o any_o time_n will_v give_v possess_v his_o soul_n in_o patience_n it_o follow_v with_o pattence_n godliness_n etc._n etc._n a_o man_n may_v demand_v what_o manner_n of_o order_n be_v here_o use_v in_o will_v we_o to_o join_v godliness_n to_o patience_n and_o then_o to_o godliness_n brotherlie_a kindness_n be_v not_o godliness_n the_o whole_a or_o the_o general_n and_o these_o branch_n be_v member_n of_o it_o true_a it_o be_v that_o this_o word_n be_v often_o use_v general_o to_o comprehend_v all_o goodness_n but_o in_o this_o place_n it_o comprehend_v but_o the_o first_o table_n of_o the_o law_n wherein_o we_o be_v will_v to_o be_v devout_a or_o zealous_a a_o very_a necessary_a caveat_n to_o beware_v that_o we_o do_v not_o become_v so_o patient_a that_o we_o forget_v to_o be_v zealous_a in_o the_o lord_n quarrel_n it_o be_v as_o if_o saint_n peter_n shall_v have_v say_v i_o will_v not_o have_v you_o so_o meek_a as_o to_o bear_v and_o put_v up_o all_o i_o will_v have_v you_o withal_o to_o be_v hot_a in_o god_n quarrel_n forget_v not_o that_o for_o many_o under_o a_o colour_n of_o a_o meek_a patience_n do_v cover_v the_o want_n of_o religion_n for_o if_o god_n be_v dishonoted_a his_o truth_n deface_v his_o servant_n slander_v they_o can_v hear_v and_o see_v and_o yet_o be_v as_o meek_a as_o a_o lamb_n but_o if_o themselves_o be_v touch_v you_o shall_v see_v they_o play_v the_o lion_n and_o of_o luke_o warm_a to_o become_v fire_n hot_a this_o therefore_o be_v no_o patience_n which_o want_v godliness_n we_o must_v learn_v then_o both_o with_o patience_n &_o meekness_n to_o deal_v in_o the_o lord_n matter_n and_o also_o with_o fervent_a zeal_n lest_o in_o steed_n of_o this_o excellent_a virtue_n of_o patience_n which_o be_v commend_v unto_o we_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o a_o curious_a if_o they_o do_v but_o look_v this_o way_n which_o god_n will_v all_o his_o servant_n to_o walk_v if_o god_n do_v open_a their_o eye_n to_o see_v but_o even_o in_o a_o glimmer_a that_o which_o he_o do_v teach_v in_o this_o place_n they_o will_v be_v ashamed_a of_o their_o master_n &_o blush_v at_o that_o which_o now_o they_o boast_v and_o brag_v of_o they_o will_v also_o confess_v that_o like_o blind_a buzzard_n and_o mad_a beast_n they_o have_v fight_v against_o god_n and_o not_o man_n final_o it_o will_v make_v they_o change_v their_o way_n and_o seek_v diligent_o to_o have_v entrance_n shall_v be_v minister_v unto_o you_o abundant_o or_o rich_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v when_o you_o have_v labour_v and_o travel_v to_o be_v as_o it_o be_v well_o soak_a and_o season_v in_o godliness_n and_o plentifullie_o deck_v with_o all_o grace_n and_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n you_o shall_v by_o degree_n proceed_v so_o far_o &_o gain_v so_o much_o that_o your_o entrance_n into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n shall_v be_v very_o great_a whereupon_o it_o do_v follow_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v past_a danger_n &_o may_v well_o warrant_v themselves_o of_o sure_a stand_n
