two_o 1._o the_o impetuousness_n and_o continual_a solicitation_n of_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n which_o continual_o send_v up_o its_o foul_a exhalation_n and_o steems_n into_o the_o heart_n and_o thereby_o taint_v and_o infect_v it_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v like_o a_o kind_n of_o fire_n which_o if_o it_o be_v feed_v with_o clean_a and_o sweet_a material_n it_o yield_v sweet_a and_o comfortable_a fume_n but_o if_o it_o be_v feed_v with_o impure_a and_o unclean_a and_o stink_a oil_n and_o exhalation_n it_o be_v taint_v with_o they_o and_o make_v unsavoury_a thought_n which_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o fume_v that_o rise_v from_o this_o fire_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o distemper_n of_o the_o body_n or_o sensual_a appetite_n send_v up_o choleric_a steems_n into_o this_o sacred_a fire_n it_o yield_v nothing_o but_o thought_n of_o anger_n and_o indignation_n if_o it_o send_v up_o melancholy_n and_o earthy_a fume_n it_o fill_v the_o soul_n with_o black_a and_o dismal_a and_o discontent_a thought_n if_o it_o send_v up_o as_o most_o ordinary_o it_o do_v sensual_a and_o fleshly_a steems_n it_o fill_v the_o heart_n with_o sensual_a and_o wanton_a thought_n 2._o the_o weakness_n and_o defect_n of_o the_o imperial_a part_n
benefit_n in_o the_o latter_a but_o yet_o not_o such_o as_o may_v with_o considerable_a advantage_n preponderate_v the_o contentment_n of_o lust_n which_o be_v present_a and_o sensible_a there_o aught_o to_o be_v a_o conviction_n of_o such_o a_o inconvenience_n in_o the_o former_a and_o such_o a_o benefit_n in_o the_o latter_a as_o may_v most_o evident_o and_o clear_o preponderate_v the_o contentment_n and_o advantage_n of_o the_o satisfy_n of_o a_o lust_n 3._o and_o because_o though_o these_o inconvenience_n and_o benefit_n be_v never_o so_o great_a yet_o if_o there_o be_v but_o a_o faint_a and_o weak_a and_o imperfect_a conviction_n of_o it_o it_o will_v work_v but_o a_o weak_a resistance_n against_o the_o invasion_n or_o rebellion_n of_o lust_n and_o a_o sensible_a present_a enjoyment_n of_o what_o delight_n will_v easy_o preponderate_v the_o weak_a and_o faint_a and_o imperfect_a conviction_n or_o suspicion_n rather_o of_o what_o be_v future_a it_o be_v necessary_a that_o such_o conviction_n shall_v be_v sound_n deep_a and_o strong_a or_o otherwise_o they_o will_v be_v but_o sluggish_a and_o languish_v opponent_n against_o the_o rhetoric_n of_o lust_n that_o yield_v a_o present_a delight_n or_o advantage_n 4._o and_o because_o though_o the_o conviction_n be_v never_o so_o strong_a yet_o if_o they_o be_v not_o accompany_v with_o constancy_n vigilancy_n and_o supplemental_a excitation_n as_o the_o opportunity_n require_v the_o constant_a and_o perpetual_a importunity_n of_o lust_n may_v happen_v upon_o a_o time_n of_o intermission_n and_o gain_v a_o advantage_n against_o a_o soul_n habitual_o thus_o convince_v it_o be_v further_a necessary_a that_o there_o be_v a_o frequent_a constant_a act_v of_o that_o conviction_n upon_o the_o soul_n or_o otherwise_o it_o may_v be_v entangle_v by_o the_o assiduous_a importunity_n of_o his_o lust_n these_o thing_n be_v thus_o premise_v it_o be_v necessary_a to_o see_v what_o kind_n of_o mean_n it_o must_v be_v that_o must_v work_v such_o a_o conviction_n of_o such_o weight_n and_o evidence_n that_o may_v rectify_v the_o judgement_n in_o reference_n to_o this_o contest_v with_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o actuate_v such_o a_o conviction_n to_o attain_v its_o due_a effect_n moral_a philosophy_n contain_v in_o it_o excellent_a precept_n and_o reason_n to_o the_o subject_n of_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n to_o the_o dictate_v of_o reason_n and_o to_o a_o moral_a cleanse_n of_o the_o heart_n but_o it_o can_v attain_v its_o end_n for_o though_o it_o propound_v inconvenience_n on_o the_o one_o side_n and_o convenience_n on_o the_o other_o yet_o they_o have_v great_a defect_n that_o make_v it_o ineffectual_a the_o thing_n which_o it_o propose_v be_v in_o themselves_o of_o unequal_a weight_n to_o the_o pleasure_n and_o content_a of_o satisfy_v the_o sensual_a appetite_n viz._n on_o the_o one_o side_n fame_n and_o glory_n and_o reputation_n and_o serenity_n of_o mind_n on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o baseness_n of_o lust_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o excellency_n of_o reason_n that_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n common_a to_o we_o with_o the_o beast_n and_o such_o like_a and_o therefore_o though_o these_o be_v fine_a notion_n and_o such_o as_o may_v be_v weighty_a with_o old_a man_n who_o lust_n have_v leave_v they_o yet_o with_o young_a man_n they_o import_n nothing_o and_o therefore_o the_o philosopher_n well_o provide_v for_o it_o by_o determine_v that_o juvenis_fw-la non_fw-la est_fw-la idoneus_fw-la auditor_n moralis_n philosophiae_fw-la and_o to_o the_o discover_v whether_o our_o heart_n walk_v in_o sincerity_n according_a to_o the_o command_n of_o god_n assure_v we_o that_o god_n behold_v and_o observe_v the_o motion_n desire_n which_o almighty_a god_n afford_v we_o first_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o do_v not_o only_o contain_v material_n and_o persuasion_n for_o the_o cleanse_n of_o the_o heart_n but_o also_o a_o high_a evidence_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o reality_n and_o benefit_n of_o those_o material_n and_o persuasion_n it_o be_v a_o convince_v and_o a_o cleanse_a word_n jo._n 15.3_o you_o be_v clean_a through_o the_o word_n which_o i_o have_v speak_v unto_o you_o second_o a_o high_a congruity_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n in_o relation_n to_o a_o future_a life_n of_o reward_n and_o punishment_n unto_o the_o very_a sentiment_n of_o reason_n and_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n itself_o the_o sense_n of_o which_o life_n of_o future_a reward_n and_o punishment_n carry_v with_o it_o not_o only_o of_o such_o a_o strength_n as_o be_v no_o less_o convince_v than_o science_n itself_o which_o be_v faith_n and_o therefore_o faith_n thus_o wrought_v purify_v the_o heart_n as_o well_o as_o the_o life_n 3._o and_o for_o a_o constant_a and_o un-intermitted_n application_n and_o re-minding_a we_o of_o these_o truth_n god_n be_v please_v to_o assist_v we_o with_o the_o continual_a assist_a many_o time_n make_v the_o world_n bitter_a to_o we_o to_o make_v we_o weary_a of_o his_o rival_n that_o so_o we_o may_v with_o more_o entireness_n and_o integrity_n set_v our_o heart_n upon_o he_o and_o upon_o that_o everlasting_a hope_n and_o long_o after_o and_o integrity_n set_v our_o heart_n upon_o he_o and_o it_o and_o satisfy_v ourselves_o with_o the_o expectation_n of_o it_o and_o make_v it_o our_o treasure_n and_o set_v up_o our_o rest_n upon_o it_o and_o in_o it_o and_o these_o be_v some_o of_o those_o many_o reason_n that_o evidence_n the_o necessity_n of_o affliction_n 6._o and_o now_o we_o will_v come_v to_o consider_v these_o three_o matter_n 1._o what_o preparation_n we_o shall_v use_v before_o affliction_n overtake_v we_o 2._o what_o shall_v be_v our_o exercise_n under_o it_o 3._o what_o shall_v be_v our_o frame_n of_o mind_n in_o case_n of_o deliverance_n from_o it_o i._o and_o in_o the_o first_o place_n of_o the_o first_o of_o these_o we_o have_v see_v that_o it_o be_v a_o lot_n to_o be_v expect_v in_o this_o world_n we_o can_v upon_o any_o term_n promise_v ourselves_o a_o exemption_n from_o it_o nay_o if_o we_o shall_v escape_v all_o other_o temporal_a calamity_n yet_o sickness_n and_o infirmity_n of_o body_n will_v most_o infallible_o overtake_v we_o they_o be_v part_n of_o that_o black_a guard_n that_o common_o attend_v death_n which_o be_v the_o inevitable_a lot_n of_o the_o live_n it_o concern_v we_o all_o therefore_o to_o be_v prepare_v for_o that_o which_o must_v necessary_o soon_o for_o latter_a be_v our_o condition_n in_o some_o kind_n or_o other_o it_o may_v be_v in_o many_o it_o may_v be_v in_o all_o kind_n 1._o therefore_o the_o first_o expedient_a preparatory_a to_o affliction_n be_v this_o in_o the_o time_n of_o our_o prosperity_n it_o must_v be_v our_o care_n to_o walk_v with_o as_o much_o innocence_n watchfulness_n and_o circumspection_n as_o can_v be_v for_o it_o be_v a_o most_o certain_a truth_n that_o the_o malignity_n and_o sting_v and_o venom_n of_o affliction_n be_v not_o so_o much_o in_o the_o thing_n i_o suffer_v as_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o my_o former_a gild_n and_o sin_n no_o man_n be_v in_o a_o better_a condition_n to_o bear_v affliction_n than_o he_o that_o have_v the_o clean_a conscience_n for_o as_o any_o distemper_n in_o any_o part_n of_o the_o body_n draw_v all_o the_o mischievous_a and_o hurtful_a humour_n of_o the_o body_n to_o that_o part_n so_o it_o be_v a_o most_o sure_o consequent_a of_o any_o manner_n of_o affliction_n it_o bring_v all_o former_a sin_n to_o remembrance_n and_o call_v the_o thought_n of_o they_o together_o upon_o such_o a_o occasion_n when_o joseph_n brethren_n be_v under_o a_o strait_a in_o egypt_n under_o the_o threaten_n and_o seem_a jealousy_n of_o their_o unknown_a brother_n then_o come_v in_o the_o remembrance_n of_o their_o injury_n to_o their_o brother_n and_o it_o be_v represent_v to_o they_o with_o all_o the_o aggravation_n that_o can_v be_v gen._n 42.21_o we_o be_v very_o guilty_a concern_v our_o brother_n in_o that_o we_o see_v the_o anguish_n of_o his_o soul_n when_o he_o beseech_v we_o and_o we_o will_v not_o hear_v therefore_o be_v this_o distress_n come_v upon_o we_o conscience_n that_o they_o have_v before_o stifle_v and_o injure_v now_o take_v her_o time_n to_o be_v even_o with_o they_o and_o fly_v upon_o they_o when_o they_o be_v in_o a_o strait_a and_o then_o she_o will_v be_v hear_v though_o in_o their_o prosperity_n she_o can_v not_o and_o this_o return_n of_o the_o remembrance_n of_o former_a sin_n be_v the_o very_a gall_n of_o affliction_n and_o that_o principal_o upon_o these_o two_o reason_n 1._o it_o be_v that_o which_o weaken_v and_o impares_fw-la the_o strength_n that_o shall_v bear_v they_o for_z for_o the_o most_o part_n all_o ternal_a affliction_n they_o concern_v the_o body_n or_o the_o outward_a man_n whether_o it_o be_v poverty_n or_o reproach_n or_o sickness_n or_o pain_n and_o if_o for_o all_o this_o the_o mind_n be_v but_o free_a she_o will_v be_v able_a to_o bear_v they_o pretty_a well_o will_v suggest_v reason_n for_o patience_n hope_n for_o deliverance_n and_o twenty_o alley_n at_o least_o to_o mitigate_v the_o present_a suffering_n but_o when_o that_o mind_n and_o reason_n and_o judgement_n that_o shall_v support_v be_v likewise_o wound_v and_o vex_v and_o torment_v with_o the_o sense_n of_o past_a sin_n and_o the_o storm_n that_o be_v within_o be_v as_o violent_a and_o turbulent_a as_o those_o without_o there_o be_v nothing_o to_o bear_v up_o against_o the_o affliction_n the_o soul_n itself_o that_o shall_v support_v the_o outward_a man_n want_v support_v for_o itself_o 2._o in_o all_o external_a trouble_n as_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n so_o it_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o man_n to_o fly_v to_o god_n and_o that_o application_n possible_o gain_v relief_n from_o it_o but_o howsoever_o it_o bear_v up_o the_o man_n with_o a_o convenient_a strength_n against_o they_o the_o very_a liberty_n of_o recourse_n to_o god_n gain_v a_o dependence_n a_o hope_n a_o confidence_n which_o support_v in_o a_o very_a great_a measure_n under_o the_o great_a trouble_n but_o this_o return_n of_o sin_n pass_v upon_o the_o conscience_n and_o memory_n if_o it_o do_v not_o whole_o deprive_v yet_o it_o do_v wonderful_o interrupt_v discourage_v and_o divert_v the_o soul_n from_o this_o most_o admirable_a expedient_a when_o a_o man_n shall_v have_v such_o thought_n as_o these_o i_o be_o under_o a_o very_a great_a affliction_n either_o in_o my_o estate_n friend_n name_n body_n and_o i_o know_v no_o way_n to_o extricate_v myself_o but_o one_o and_o that_o be_v by_o application_n to_o the_o almighty_a and_o merciful_a god_n and_o if_o i_o can_v but_o do_v so_o i_o be_v safe_a but_o alas_o the_o memory_n of_o my_o former_a sin_n my_o breach_n of_o covenant_n with_o he_o my_o frequent_a relapse_n into_o sin_n my_o ingratitude_n to_o he_o they_o fall_v in_o upon_o i_o and_o i_o dare_v not_o i_o know_v not_o how_o i_o have_v not_o the_o face_n the_o confidence_n to_o come_v unto_o he_o and_o so_o i_o must_v lie_v and_o sink_v under_o as_o well_o my_o gild_n as_o my_o affliction_n and_o although_o this_o be_v a_o very_a false_a way_n of_o argumentation_n and_o such_o as_o be_v most_o displease_v to_o god_n and_o derogatory_n to_o his_o high_a prerogative_n of_o mercy_n as_o well_o in_o forgive_a as_o in_o deliver_v who_o have_v give_v to_o the_o most_o heinous_a sinner_n and_o under_o the_o great_a affliction_n a_o commission_n to_o ask_v his_o mercy_n both_o to_o pardon_v and_o to_o deliver_v and_o that_o with_o a_o promise_n of_o mercy_n yet_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o what_o by_o our_o own_o weakness_n and_o what_o by_o the_o devil_n subtlety_n the_o remembrance_n of_o our_o past_a sin_n do_v most_o ordinary_o make_v our_o address_n to_o god_n under_o our_o affliction_n very_o difficult_a little_o therefore_o do_v people_n consider_v in_o the_o time_n of_o their_o prosperity_n what_o a_o stock_n of_o venom_n and_o malignity_n they_o lie_v up_o against_o a_o evil_a day_n by_o a_o dissolute_a and_o sinful_a in_o thy_o prosperity_n and_o thou_o may_v with_o confidence_n resort_v to_o he_o and_o rely_v upon_o he_o in_o
relapse_n into_o they_o remember_v the_o mischief_n they_o then_o do_v thou_o and_o let_v they_o know_v they_o shall_v do_v thou_o no_o more_o be_v most_o severe_a and_o strict_a against_o they_o 5._o make_v a_o frequent_a use_n of_o thy_o deliverance_n as_o a_o singular_a preservative_n against_o the_o power_n of_o thy_o temptation_n and_o corruption_n deliverance_n carry_v in_o the_o very_a apprehension_n of_o it_o these_o two_o thing_n 1._o a_o supposition_n of_o a_o former_a misery_n or_o visitation_n 2._o a_o present_a enjoyment_n of_o a_o freedom_n from_o that_o misery_n therefore_o if_o any_o corruption_n or_o temptation_n unto_o sin_n solicit_v thou_o improve_v this_o consideration_n to_o this_o or_o the_o like_a effect_n i_o be_v late_o under_o the_o rack_n under_o the_o rod_n under_o extreme_a want_n imprisonment_n disgrace_n loss_n sickness_n sorrow_n fear_n and_o a_o imminent_a expectation_n of_o the_o worst_a of_o evil_n and_o though_o these_o be_v sore_o and_o sharp_a affliction_n yet_o the_o sense_n of_o my_o former_a sin_n and_o the_o importunate_a restlessness_n of_o that_o gild_n that_o be_v contract_v from_o they_o be_v more_o bitter_a and_o torment_a than_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o my_o suffering_n it_o be_v that_o which_o be_v the_o sting_n and_o venom_n of_o all_o my_o affliction_n and_o it_o have_v please_v almighty_a god_n to_o accept_v of_o my_o humiliation_n and_o to_o remove_v my_o affliction_n and_o to_o give_v i_o beauty_n for_o ash_n and_o shall_v i_o be_v so_o very_a a_o fool_n as_o by_o commit_v of_o a_o new_a sin_n to_o run_v the_o hazard_n of_o another_o plunge_n another_o scourge_n which_o in_o all_o probability_n must_v be_v much_o more_o severe_a than_o the_o former_a because_o it_o will_v be_v the_o issue_n not_o only_o of_o sin_n but_o of_o presumption_n a_o sin_n commit_v against_o the_o experience_n that_o i_o have_v have_v of_o the_o bitterness_n of_o sin_n and_o with_o what_o face_n or_o hope_n can_v i_o expect_v any_o possibility_n of_o deliverance_n from_o a_o second_o relapse_n into_o misery_n occasion_v by_o so_o desperate_a a_o presumptuous_a relapse_n into_o sin_n but_o suppose_v it_o be_v possible_a that_o notwithstanding_o my_o yield_n to_o this_o temptation_n i_o may_v escape_v the_o vengeance_n yet_o can_v i_o be_v so_o false_a so_o ungrateful_a to_o that_o god_n that_o have_v deliver_v i_o from_o my_o suffering_n and_o from_o my_o fear_n as_o to_o recompense_v his_o love_n and_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n with_o a_o presumptuous_a apostasy_n from_o he_o shall_v i_o thus_o requite_v his_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n that_o hear_v i_o in_o my_o anguish_n and_o sadness_n of_o soul_n in_o my_o extremity_n and_o misery_n and_o so_o hear_v i_o that_o he_o have_v deliver_v i_o out_o of_o all_o my_o trouble_n and_o misery_n certain_o if_o either_o common_a prudence_n or_o common_a ingenuity_n be_v leave_v in_o a_o man_n the_o sense_n of_o a_o former_a calamity_n and_o the_o sense_n of_o so_o great_a a_o mercy_n will_v make_v a_o man_n abhor_v the_o least_o submission_n to_o that_o temptation_n that_o may_v at_o once_o hazard_v the_o continuance_n of_o his_o present_a practice_v they_o after_o thy_o restitution_n consider_v whether_o in_o thy_o affliction_n thou_o do_v remember_v thy_o past_a recreation_n thy_o merriment_n thy_o feast_n thy_o lust_n thy_o honour_n thy_o greatness_n with_o any_o comfort_n or_o contentment_n or_o whether_o the_o remembrance_n of_o the_o hour_n thou_o have_v former_o spend_v in_o prayer_n read_v the_o scripture_n hear_v sermon_n relieve_v the_o poor_a visit_v the_o sick_a relieve_v the_o oppress_a harbour_v the_o persecute_a member_n of_o christ_n give_v thou_o more_o contentment_n and_o i_o dare_v appeal_n to_o any_o man_n experience_n under_o heaven_n that_o when_o the_o former_a sort_n of_o transaction_n of_o our_o life_n be_v either_o extreme_o bitter_a or_o at_o best_a very_o insipid_a to_o his_o remembrance_n yet_o the_o remembrance_n of_o these_o of_o the_o latter_a sort_n be_v most_o comfortable_a and_o content_v thou_o be_v now_o recover_v it_o be_v true_a but_o as_o sure_a as_o thou_o shall_v die_v so_o sure_o thou_o shall_v pass_v through_o new_a affliction_n though_o it_o may_v be_v not_o of_o the_o same_o kind_n yet_o of_o some_o kind_n let_v it_o be_v thy_o care_n after_o god_n have_v thus_o deliver_v thou_o from_o thy_o former_a affliction_n to_o lay_v up_o a_o stock_n of_o good_a work_n against_o another_o evil_a day_n such_o cordial_n will_v lie_v warm_a at_o thy_o heart_n even_o true_a shall_v be_v in_o a_o continual_a frame_n of_o prayer_n and_o almost_o every_o occurrence_n of_o our_o life_n require_v a_o lift_n up_o of_o the_o heart_n to_o god_n in_o prayer_n or_o in_o thanksgiving_n which_o can_v be_v so_o order_v with_o preparation_n but_o a_o solemn_a prayer_n though_o in_o private_a require_v a_o just_a preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o a_o performance_n of_o it_o with_o the_o whole_a contribution_n of_o the_o whole_a soul_n and_o strength_n and_o understanding_n and_o affection_n 3._o though_o thou_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o use_v no_o other_o form_n yet_o use_v this_o frequent_o upon_o these_o consideration_n 1._o it_o be_v the_o command_n of_o thy_o lord_n and_o master_n there_o be_v somewhat_o of_o command_n in_o these_o word_n he_o that_o temper_n of_o heart_n that_o be_v fit_a viz._n submission_n to_o the_o will_n and_o glory_n of_o god_n in_o the_o first_o petition_n of_o this_o prayer_n furnish_v in_o a_o short_a compendium_n to_o pray_v over_o that_o which_o thou_o have_v before_o ask_v and_o to_o pray_v for_o that_o which_o before_o thou_o have_v omit_v 4._o as_o it_o be_v a_o comprehensive_a prayer_n and_o contain_v much_o so_o it_o be_v a_o compendious_a prayer_n and_o contain_v much_o in_o little_a the_o wise_a and_o merciful_a god_n know_v the_o frailty_n of_o our_o nature_n and_o therefore_o have_v fit_v we_o according_a to_o our_o own_o narrowness_n with_o abridgement_n he_o know_v the_o shortness_n of_o our_o memory_n and_o therefore_o he_o give_v his_o will_n under_o the_o old_a law_n in_o ten_o word_n christ_n he_o give_v we_o another_o abridgement_n of_o that_o abridgement_n love_n god_n and_o thy_o neighbour_n god_n also_o know_v the_o weakness_n of_o our_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o he_o give_v we_o a_o short_a prayer_n that_o in_o the_o use_n of_o it_o our_o spirit_n may_v bear_v up_o and_o the_o fire_n last_o till_o the_o prayer_n end_v it_o be_v true_a when_o we_o have_v a_o continue_a fit_a to_o be_v ask_v and_o such_o as_o thy_o spirit_n may_v go_v along_o with_o to_o the_o end_n without_o be_v tire_v it_o be_v true_a that_o a_o man_n shall_v usual_o find_v more_o intention_n of_o spirit_n in_o his_o own_o prayer_n than_o in_o this_o bless_v god_n that_o thou_o have_v this_o intention_n of_o spirit_n in_o thy_o own_o prayer_n and_o neglect_v they_o not_o but_o pray_v for_o pardon_v that_o thou_o want_v it_o in_o this_o and_o strive_v to_o amend_v it_o now_o the_o great_a cause_n of_o the_o unprofitable_a use_n even_o of_o this_o prayer_n and_o of_o divers_a other_o ordinance_n grow_v from_o this_o that_o people_n use_v they_o without_o a_o distinct_a and_o deep_a consideration_n of_o the_o thing_n contain_v in_o they_o the_o sun_n in_o the_o firmament_n be_v
