IV. 1 Zion bewalleth her pitiful estate 13 She confesseth her sins 21 Edom is threatned 22 Zion is comforted HOw is the gold become dim how is the most fine gold changed the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street 2 The precious sons of Zion comparable to fine gold how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers the work of the hands of the potter 3 Even the ‖ Or stâ—â—alveâ— sea-monsters draw out the breast they give suck to their young ones the daughter of my people is become cruel like the ostriches in the wilderness 4 The tongue of the sucking childe cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst the young children ask bread and no man breaketh it unto them 5 They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills 6 For the ‖ Or iniquity punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater then the punishment of the sin of Sodom that was * Gen. 19.35 overthrown as in a moment and no hands stayed on her 7 Her Nazarites were purer then snow they were whiter then milk they were more ruddy in body then rubies their polishing was of sapphire 8 Their visage is †Heb. carker then blackness blacker then a coal they are not known in the streets their skin cleaveth to their bones it is withered it is become like a stick 9 They that be slain with the sword are better then they that be slain with hunger for these †Heb. â—low out pine away stricken through for want of the fruits of the field 10 The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children they were their * Deu. 28.57 2 Kin. 6.29 meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people 11 The LORD hath accomplished his fury he hath poured out his fierce anger and hath kindled a fire in Zion and it hath devoured the foundations thereof 12 The kings of the earth and all
the inhabitants of the world would not have beleeved that the adversary and the enemy should have entred into the gates of Jerusalem 13 ¶ * Jer. 5.31 and 23.21 For the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests that have shed the bloud of the just in the midst of her 14 They have wandred as blinde men in the streets they have polluted themselves with bloud ‖ Or in that they could not but touch so that men could not touch their garments 15 They cried unto them Depart ye ‖ Or ye polluted it is unclean depart depart touch not when they fled away and wandred they said among the heathen They shall no more sojourn there 16 The ‖ Or faâ—â— anger of the LORD hath divided them he will no more regard them they respected not the persons of the priests they favoured not the elders 17 As for us our eyes as yet failed for our vain help in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us 18 They hunt out steps that we cannot go in our streets our end is near our days are fulfilled for our end is come 19 Our persecutours are swifter then the eagles of the heaven they pursued us upon the mountains they said wait for us in the wilderness 20 The * Gen. 2.7 breath of our nostrils the anointed of the LORD was taken in their pits of whom we said Under his shadow we shall live among the heathen 21 Rejoyce and be glad O daughter of Edom that dwellest in the land of Uz the cup also shall pass through unto thee thou shalt be drunken and shalt make thy self naked 22 ¶ ‖ Or Thine iniquity The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished O daughter of Zion he will no more carry thee away into captivity he will visit thine iniquity O daughter of Edom he will ‖ Or carry thee captive for thy sins discover thy sins CHAP. V. A pitiful complaint of Zion in prayer unto God REmember O LORD what is come upon us consider and behold our reproach 2 Our inheritance is turned to strangers our houses to aliens 3 We are orphans and fatherless our mothers are as widows 4 We have drunken our water for money our wood †Heb. cometh for price is sold unto us 5 †Heb. on our necks are we persecuted Our necks are under persecution we labour and have no rest 6 We have given the hand to the Egyptians and to the Assyrians to be satisfied with bread 7 * Jer. 31.29 Ezek. 18.2 Our fathers have sinned and are not and we have born their iniquities 8 Servants have ruled over us there is none that doth deliver us out of their hand 9 We gat our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness 10 Our * Ps 119.83 skin was black like an oven because of the ‖ Or terrours or storms terrible famine 11 They ravished the women in Zion and the maids in the cities of Judah 12 Princes are hanged up by their hand the faces of elders were not honoured 13 They took the young men to grinde and the children fell under the wood 14 The elders have ceased from the gate the young men from their musick 15 The joy of our heart is ceased our dance is turned into mourning 16 †Heb. the crown of our head is fallen The crown is faln from our head wo unto us that we have sinned 17 For this our heart is faint for these things our eyes are dim 18 Because of the mountain of Zion which is desolate the foxes walk upon it 19 Thou O LORD * Ps 9.7 c 29.10 and 102.12 and 145.13 remainest for ever thy throne from generation to generation 20 Wherefore dost thou forget us for ever and forsake us †Heb. for â—ength of days so long time 21 * Jer. 31.18 Turn thou us unto thee O LORD and we shall be turned renew our days as of old 22 ‖ Or For wilt thou utterly reject uâ—â— But thou hast utterly rejected us thou art very wroth against us ¶ The book of the Prophet EZEKIEL CHAP. I. 1 The time of Ezekiels prophesie at Chebar 4 His vision of four therubims 15 of the four wheels 2â— and of the glory of GOD. NOw it came to pass in the thirtieth year in the fourth moneth in the fifth day of the moneth as I was among the †Heb. captivity captives by the river of Chebar that the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God 2 In the fifth day of the moneth which was the fifth year of king Jehoiachins captivity 3 The word of the LORD came expresly unto †Heb. Jekezkel Ezekiel the priest the son of Buzi in the land of the Caldeans by the river Chebar and the hand of the LORD was there upon him 4 ¶ And I looked and behold a whirlwind came out of the north a great cloud and a fire †Heb. catching it self infolding it self and a brightness was about it and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber out of the midst of the fire 5 Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures And this was their appearance They had the likeness of a man 6 And every one had four faces and every one had four wings 7 And their feet were †Heb. a strait foot strait feet and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calves foot and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass 8 And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides and they four had their faces and their wings 9 Their wings were joyned one to another they turned not when they went they went every one strait forward 10 As for the likeness of their faces they four had the face of a man and the face of a lion on the right side and they four had the face or an ox on the left side they four also had the face of an eagle 11 Thus were their faces and their wings were ‖ Or artâ—â—â— aâ—â—â— stretched upward two wings of every one were joyned one to another and two covered their bodies 12 And they went every one strait forward whither the spirit was to go they went and they turned not when they went 13 As for the likeness of the living creatures their appearance was like burning coals of fire and like the appearance of lamps it went up and down among the living creatures and the fire was bright and out of the fire went forth lightning 14 And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning 15 ¶ Now as I beheld the living creatures behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures with his four faces 16 The apâ—earance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl and they four had one
the maimed and let the blinde man come into the sight of my clearness 22 Keep the old and young within thy walls 23 * Tob. â— 17 18. Wheresoever thou findest the dead †signing bury them take them and bury them and I will give thee the first place in my resurrection 24 Abide still O my people and take thy rest for thy quietness shall come 25 Nourish thy children O thou good nurse stablish their feet 26 As for the servants whom I have given thee there shall not one of them perish for I will require them from among thy number 27 Be not weary for when the day of trouble and heaviness cometh others shall weep and be sorrowful but thou shalt be merry and have abundance 28 The heathen shall envy thee but they shall be able to do nothing against thee saith the Lord. 29 My hands shall cover thee so that thy children shall not see hell 30 Be joyful O thou mother with thy children for I will deliver thee saith the Lord. 31 Remember thy children that sleep for I shall bring them out of the sides of the earth and shew mercy unto them for I am merciful saith the Lord Almighty 32 Embrace thy children until I come and ‖ Or preaâ—e shew mercy unto them for my wells run over and my grace shall not fail 33 I Esdras received a charge of the Lord upon the mount Oreb that I should go unto Israel but when I came unto then they set me at nought and despised the commandment of the Lord. 34 And therefore I say unto you O ye heathen that hear and understand Look for your Shepherd he shall give you everlasting rest for he is nigh at hand that shall come in the end of the world 35 Be ready to the reward of the kingdom for the everlasting light shall shine upon you for evermore 36 Flee the shadow of this world receive the joyfulness of your glory I testify my Saviour openly 37 O receive the gift that is given you and be glad giving thanks unto him that hath called you to the heavenly kingdom 38 Arise up and stand behold the number of those that be sealed ‖ Or for in the feast of the Lord. 39 Which are departed from the shadow of the world and have received glorious garments of the Lord. 40 Take thy number O Sion and †Lat. conclude shut up those of thine that are clothed in white which have fulfilled the law of the Lord. 41 The number of thy children whom thou longedst for is fulfilled beseech the power of the Lord that thy people which have been called from the beginning may be hallowed 42 * Rev. 7.9 I Esdras saw upon the mount Sion a great people whom I could not number and they all praised the Lord with songs 43 And in the midst of them there was a young man of a high stature taller then all the rest and upon every one of their heads he set crowns and was more exalted which I marvelled at greatly 44 So I asked the angel and said ‖ Or Lord. Sir what are these 45 He answered and said unto me These be they that have put off the mortal clothing and put on the immortal and have confessed the name of God now are they crowned and receive palms 46 Then said I unto the angel What young person is it that crowneth them and giveth them palms in their hands 47 So he answered and said unto me It is the Son of God whom they have confessed in the world Then began I greatly to commend them that stood so stifly for the name of the Lord. 48 Then the angel said unto me Go thy way and tell my people what manner of things and how great wonders of the Lord thy God thou hast seen CHAP. III. 1 Esdras is troubled 13 and acknowledgeth the sins of the people 28 yet complaineth that the heathen were lords over them being more wicked then they IN the thirtieth year after the ruine of the city I was in Babylon and lay troubled upon my bed and my thoughts came up over my heart 2 For I saw the desolation of Sion and the wealth of them that dwelt at Babylon 3 And my spirit was sore moved so that I began to speak words full of fear to the most High and said 4 O Lord who bearest rule thou spakest at the beginning when thou didst plant the earth and that thy self alone and commandedst the people 5 * Gen. 2.7 And gavest a body unto Adam without soul which was the workmanship of thine hands and didst breath into him the breath of life and he was made living before thee 6 And thou leddest him into paradise which thy right hand had planted before ever the earth came forward 7 And unto him thou gavest commandment to love thy way which he transgressed and immediately thou appointedst death in him and in his generations of whom came nations tribes people and kindreds out of number 8 * Gen. 6.12 And every people walked after their own will and did wonderful things before thee and despised thy commandments 9 * Gen. 7.10 And again in process of time thou broughtest the floud upon those that dwelt in the world and destroyedst them 10 And it came to pass in every of them that as death was to Adam so was the floud to these 11 Nevertheless one of them thou leftest namely * 1 Pet. 3.20 Noah with his houshold of whom came all righteous men 12 And it happened that when they that dwelt upon the earth began to multiply and had gotten them many children and were a great people they began again to be more ungodly then the first 13 Now when they lived so wickedly before thee * Gen. 12.1 thou didst choose thee a man from among them whose name was * Gen. 17.5 Abraham 14 Him thou lovedst and unto him onely thou shewedst thy will 15 And madest an everlasting covenant with him promising him that thou wouldest never forsake his seed 16 * Gen. 21.2 3. LXIV 1 David prayeth for deliverance complaining of his enemies 7 He promiseth himself to see such an evident destruction of his enemies as the righteous shall rejoyce at it ¶ To the chief musician A psalm of David HEar my voice O God in my prayer preserve my life from fear of the enemy 2 Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity 3 * Psal 11.2 Who whet their tongue like a sword and bend their bows to shoot their arrows even bitter words 4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect suddenly do they shoot at him and fear not 5 They encourage themselves in an evil ‖ Or speeth matter they commune †Heb to hide snares of laying snares privily they say Who shall see them 6 They search out iniquities ‖ Or we are consumed by that which they have throughly searched they accomplish †Heb. a searth searched a diligent search both the inward thought of every one of them and the heart is deep 7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow suddenly †Heb. their wound shall be shall they be wounded 8 So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves all that see them shall flee away 9 And all men shall fear and shall declare the work of God for they shall wisely consider of his doing 10 The righteous shall be glad in the LORD and shall trust in him and all the upright in heart shall glory PSAL. David praiseth God for his grace 4 The blessedness of Gods chosen by reason of benefits ¶ To the chief musician A psalm and song of David PRaise †Heb. is silent waiteth for thee O God in Sion and unto thee shall the vow be performed 2 O thou that hearest prayer unto thee shall all flesh come 3 †Heb. words or matters of iniquities Iniquities prevail against me as for our transgressions thou shalt purge them away 4 Blessed is the man whom thou choosest and causest to approach unto thee that he may dwell in thy courts we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house even of thy holy temple 5 By terrible things in righteousness wilt thou answer us O God of our salvation who art the confidence of all the ends of the earth and of them that are afar off upon the sea 6 Which by his strength setteth fast the mountains being girded with power 7 Which stilleth the noise of the seas the noise of their waves and the tumult of the people 8 They also that dwell in the uttermost parts are afraid at thy tokens thou makest the outgoings of the morning and evening ‖ Or to sing to rejoyce 9 Thou visitest the earth and ‖ Or after thou hadst nude it to desire rain waterest it thou greatly enrichest it with the river of God which is full of water thou preparest them corn when thou hast so provided for it 10 Thou waterest the ridges thereof abundantly ‖ Or thou caustâ— rain to destend into the furrows thereof thou settlest the furrows thereof †Heb. thou dissolvest it thou makest it soft with showres thou blessest the springing thereof 11 Thou crownest †Heb. the year of thy goodness the year with thy goodness and thy paths drop fatness 12 They drop upon the pastures of the wilderness and the little hills †Heb. are girded with joy rejoyce on every side 13 The pastures are clothed with flocks the valleys also are covered over with corn they shout for joy they also sing PSAL. LXVI 1. David exhorteth to praise God 5 to observe his great words 8 to bless him for his gracious benefits 12 He voweth for himself religious service to God 16 He declareth Gods special goodness to himself ¶ To the chief musician A song or psalm MAke a joyful noise unto God †Heb. all the earth all ye lands 2 Sing forth the honour of his name make his praise glorious 3 Say unto God How terrible art thou in thy works through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies ‖ Or yeeld sâ—â—â—â—ed obedience †Heb. lie submit themselves unto thee 4 All the earth shall worship thee and shall sing unto thee they shall sing to thy name Selah 5 Come and see the works of God be is terrible in his doing toward the children of men 6 He turned the sea into dry land they went through the flood on foot there did we rejoyce in him 7 He ruleth by his power for ever his eyes behold the nations let not the rebellious exalt themselves Selah 8 O bless our God ye people and make the voice of his Praise to be heard 9 Which †Heb. putteth holdeth our soul in life and suffereth not our feet to be moved 10 For thou O God hast proved us thou hast tried us as silver is tried 11 Thou broughtest us into the net thou laidst affliction upon our loyns 12 Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads we went through fire and through water but thou broughtest us out into a †Heb. waist wealthy place 13 I will go into thy house with burnt-offerings I will pay thee my vows 14 Which my lips have †Heb. opened uttered and my mouth hath spoken when I was in trouble 15 I will offer unto thee burnt-sacrifices of †Heb. morrow fatlings with the incense of rams I will offer bullocks with goats Selah 16 Come and hear all ye that fear God and I will declare what he hath done for my soul 17 I cryed unto him with my mouth and he was extolled with my tongue 18 If I regard iniquity in my heart the Lord will not hear me 19 But verily God hath heard me he hath attended to the voice of my prayer 20 Blessed he God which hath not turned away my prayer nor his mercy from me PSAL. LXVII 1 A prayer for the enlargement of Gods kingdom 3 to the joy of the people 6 and the increase of Gods blessings ¶ To the chief musician on Neginoth A psalm or song GOd be merciful unto us and bless us and cause his face to shine †Heb. with us upon us Selah 2 That thy way may be known upon earth thy saving health among all nations 3 Let the people praise thee O God let all the people praise thee 4 O let the nations be glad and sing for joy for thou shalt judge the people righteously and †Heb. lead govern the nations upon earth Selah 5 Let the people praise thee O God let all the people praise thee 6 Then shall the earth yeeld her increase and God even our own God shall bless us 7 God shall bless us and all the ends of the earth shall fear him PSAL.
