providence_n as_o to_o its_o distribution_n of_o the_o portion_n of_o this_o life_n the_o pagan_a philosopher_n distribute_v all_o the_o good_a thing_n they_o have_v any_o knowledge_n of_o into_o three_o sort_n the_o good_a thing_n of_o the_o body_n among_o which_o they_o reckon_v long-life_n health_n strength_n beauty_n etc._n etc._n the_o good_a thing_n of_o the_o mind_n the_o rich_a endowment_n of_o it_o such_o as_o knowledge_n invention_n judgement_n wit_n memory_n and_o moral_a virtue_n etc._n etc._n and_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o fortune_n such_o as_o birth_n ingenuous_a education_n honour_n riches_n all_o these_o have_v a_o goodness_n in_o they_o which_o lie_v in_o their_o suitableness_n to_o the_o use_n of_o humane_a life_n or_o society_n the_o blind_a heathen_a not_o see_v the_o fountainhead_n of_o these_o beautiful_a stream_n ascribe_v they_o to_o fortune_n but_o they_o be_v all_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o providence_n that_o give_v to_o one_o a_o long_o to_o another_o a_o short_a life_n to_o one_o great_a to_o another_o lesser_a measure_n of_o health_n and_o strength_n etc._n etc._n to_o one_o more_o judgement_n wit_n etc._n etc._n than_o to_o another_o but_o i_o chief_o understand_v my_o observation_n of_o the_o good_a thing_n which_o the_o heathen_a call_v bona_fw-la fortunae_fw-la the_o good_a thing_n of_o fortune_n such_o as_o honour_n riches_n etc._n etc._n these_o also_o be_v the_o lord_n he_o it_o be_v say_v moses_n that_o give_v we_o power_n to_o get_v wealth_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n by_o another_o penman_n tell_v we_o that_o promotion_n come_v neither_o from_o the_o east_n nor_o from_o the_o west_n but_o god_n pull_v down_o one_o and_o set_v up_o another_o promotion_n do_v most_o depend_v upon_o the_o favour_n of_o the_o great_a man_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o you_o shall_v observe_v the_o scripture_n everywhere_o make_v god_n the_o author_n of_o the_o favour_n and_o grace_n which_o person_n have_v find_v in_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o prince_n of_o the_o world_n 2._o now_o i_o observe_v in_o the_o first_o place_n that_o the_o wheel_n of_o providence_n in_o make_v this_o distribution_n do_v for_o the_o most_o part_n move_v circular_o my_o meaning_n be_v that_o good_a and_o evil_n of_o this_o nature_n have_v as_o all_o humane_a thing_n its_o turn_n and_o vicissitude_n sometime_o to_o good_a man_n sometime_o to_o bad_a man_n the_o heathen_a have_v some_o prospect_n of_o this_o though_o what_o we_o call_v providence_n they_o ascribe_v to_o fortune_n to_o who_o they_o give_v a_o wheel_n to_o signify_v the_o rotation_n of_o all_o these_o sublunary_a contentment_n in_o which_o you_o know_v the_o same_o spoke_n be_v not_o always_o up_o nor_o down_o but_o sometime_o these_o spoke_n be_v uppermost_a by_o and_o by_o they_o be_v at_o the_o ground_n and_o those_o that_o but_o now_o be_v below_o be_v up_o in_o their_o place_n and_o this_o be_v most_o perspicuous_a in_o body_n of_o people_n which_o be_v make_v up_o of_o those_o two_o sort_n of_o man_n that_o divide_v the_o world_n godly_a
god_n to_o punish_v wicked_a man_n though_o he_o know_v affliction_n will_v do_v they_o no_o good_a but_o make_v they_o worse_o harden_v their_o heart_n and_o give_v they_o occasion_n to_o blaspheme_v because_o of_o their_o plague_n but_o we_o do_v not_o only_o see_v adult_n and_o grow_v person_n smite_v of_o god_n and_o afflict_a and_o those_o as_o well_o such_o as_o fear_n god_n as_o those_o who_o have_v no_o fear_n of_o god_n before_o their_o eye_n but_o we_o also_o see_v child_n smite_v of_o god_n such_o of_o who_o we_o say_v they_o have_v neither_o do_v good_a nor_o evil_a the_o question_n be_v quest_n how_o this_o dispensation_n of_o actual_a providence_n be_v reconcileable_a to_o the_o justice_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n that_o which_o blind_v our_o eye_n and_o make_v this_o motion_n of_o providence_n appear_v more_o hard_a and_o difficult_a to_o be_v understand_v by_o we_o be_v the_o suppose_a innocency_n of_o child_n they_o perish_v ofttimes_o before_o they_o come_v to_o exercise_v any_o act_n of_o reason_n concern_v the_o eternal_a state_n of_o child_n die_v in_o their_o infancy_n i_o shall_v determine_v nothing_o because_o indeed_o the_o scripture_n that_o i_o know_v of_o nowhere_o determine_v all_o so_o die_v within_o the_o election_n of_o grace_n nor_o that_o christ_n as_o to_o all_o such_o have_v expiate_v the_o guilt_n of_o adam_n sin_n or_o original_a corruption_n nor_o that_o effectual_a save_a grace_n do_v always_o attend_v the_o ordinance_n of_o baptism_n though_o they_o be_v bring_v under_o it_o which_o yet_o many_o be_v not_o this_o be_v a_o great_a secret_n what_o god_n do_v with_o the_o soul_n of_o child_n die_v in_o infancy_n but_o this_o be_v not_o what_o i_o have_v to_o do_v with_o what_o god_n do_v with_o the_o soul_n of_o such_o we_o see_v not_o we_o have_v no_o sufficient_a mean_n to_o understand_v and_o therefore_o free_o leave_v they_o to_o the_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n but_o we_o see_v they_o be_v afflict_v as_o well_o as_o other_o they_o die_v as_o much_o as_o other_o if_o not_o in_o great_a number_n shall_v we_o say_v the_o hand_n of_o god_n be_v not_o in_o this_o thing_n or_o that_o their_o sickness_n and_o death_n be_v no_o effect_n of_o punitive_a providence_n or_o vindicative_a justice_n but_o the_o mere_a product_n of_o a_o disorder_a nature_n and_o temper_n this_o be_v certain_o to_o contradict_v the_o holy_a scripture_n where_o we_o find_v the_o affliction_n of_o child_n make_v the_o matter_n of_o threaten_n the_o execution_n of_o punishment_n upon_o they_o ascribe_v to_o god_n god_n by_o his_o prophet_n threaten_v the_o death_n of_o david_n child_n by_o bathsheba_n and_o of_o jeroboam_n child_n in_o this_o text_n see_v vers_fw-la 12._o the_o affliction_n and_o trouble_n of_o child_n rise_v no_o more_o out_o of_o the_o dust_n nor_o more_o spring_v out_o of_o the_o ground_n than_o other_o their_o affliction_n come_v at_o his_o command_n work_v at_o his_o command_n bring_v forth_o the_o issue_n which_o he_o will_v they_o and_o be_v punishment_n as_o well_o as_o the_o affliction_n of_o more_o adult_n and_o grow_v person_n my_o business_n must_v be_v to_o reconcile_v this_o motion_n of_o divine_a providence_n to_o divine_a justice_n and_o goodness_n in_o order_n to_o which_o i_o shall_v offer_v you_o several_a consideration_n 1._o can_v i_o assure_v life_n before_o the_o foundation_n of_o the_o world_n or_o as_o have_v their_o share_n in_o the_o guilt_n of_o adam_n sin_n expiate_v by_o christ_n and_o their_o original_a pollution_n wash_v away_o in_o his_o blood_n this_o question_n be_v determine_v and_o the_o objection_n of_o no_o value_n it_o be_v a_o privilege_a soul_n that_o first_o get_v out_o of_o the_o prison_n of_o the_o flesh_n into_o the_o liberty_n the_o glorious_a liberty_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n suppose_v this_o it_o will_v be_v no_o act_n of_o justice_n and_o severity_n but_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n to_o cut_v off_o our_o child_n from_o the_o womb_n and_o from_o the_o breast_n to_o deliver_v they_o from_o the_o bodily_a pain_n and_o ache_n from_o all_o other_o vexation_n cross_n and_o disturbance_n which_o they_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o meet_v with_o in_o the_o world_n happy_a thrice_o happy_a be_v that_o soul_n certain_o that_o make_v but_o one_o leap_n from_o the_o womb_n into_o abraham_n bosom_n that_o take_v but_o one_o step_n into_o the_o world_n and_o the_o next_o into_o paradise_n and_o certain_o this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o very_a many_o christ_n have_v tell_v we_o that_o of_o such_o be_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n if_o all_o such_o be_v not_o there_o as_o to_o which_o the_o scripture_n be_v silent_a yet_o many_o such_o be_v there_o all_o choose_a in_o christ_n be_v there_o there_o be_v good_a hope_n of_o the_o seed_n of_o those_o that_o fear_n god_n the_o covenant_n of_o god_n be_v with_o his_o people_n and_o with_o their_o seed_n and_o how_o happy_a be_v they_o that_o can_v get_v to_o heaven_n with_o a_o groan_n or_o two_o with_o such_o a_o degree_n of_o pain_n and_o ache_n as_o those_o little_a body_n can_v only_o bear_v and_o that_o before_o their_o reason_n be_v improve_v by_o its_o reflection_n to_o make_v their_o pain_n and_o misery_n more_o bitter_a so_o that_o as_o to_o all_o such_o as_o be_v ordain_v unto_o life_n the_o case_n be_v plain_a divine_a goodness_n be_v eminent_o see_v in_o give_v they_o so_o short_a a_o passage_n through_o the_o vale_n of_o misery_n and_o show_v they_o a_o far_o short_a and_o near_a way_n to_o heaven_n than_o what_o more_o grow_v person_n must_v go_v through_o much_o tribulation_n now_o though_o i_o can_v assure_v you_o this_o concern_v all_o yet_o i_o can_v concern_v many_o which_o make_v the_o day_n of_o their_o affliction_n and_o death_n to_o be_v much_o better_a than_o the_o day_n wherein_o it_o be_v say_v of_o they_o there_o be_v a_o child_n bear_v into_o the_o world_n and_o sure_o if_o the_o thracian_n who_o be_v heathen_n upon_o the_o prospect_n of_o no_o more_o than_o the_o misery_n to_o which_o humane_a life_n be_v subject_v can_v alter_v the_o common_a custom_n of_o rejoice_v at_o nativity_n and_o mourn_v at_o burial_n into_o a_o mourning_n at_o the_o birth_n of_o their_o child_n and_o a_o rejoice_v and_o triumph_v at_o the_o death_n of_o their_o friend_n we_o to_o who_o a_o life_n and_o immortality_n be_v bring_v to_o light_n by_o the_o gospel_n and_o to_o who_o the_o immediate_a transition_n of_o elect_a soul_n out_o of_o a_o state_n of_o mortality_n and_o misery_n into_o a_o state_n of_o happiness_n and_o eternal_a blessedness_n be_v matter_n of_o faith_n have_v much_o more_o reason_n to_o adore_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n in_o the_o present_a determination_n of_o our_o child_n life_n than_o to_o quarrel_v at_o divine_a providence_n for_o bring_v such_o thing_n to_o pass_v while_o it_o do_v we_o nor_o we_o any_o further_a harm_n than_o deprive_v we_o of_o the_o little_a pleasure_n we_o take_v in_o behold_v those_o picture_n of_o ourselves_o dandle_v they_o in_o our_o lap_n hug_v they_o in_o our_o bosom_n while_o also_o this_o pleasure_n be_v embitter_v to_o we_o by_o a_o thousand_o fear_n and_o care_n and_o sollicitude_n and_o trouble_n for_o with_o and_o concern_v they_o but_o because_o i_o can_v assure_v you_o this_o concern_v all_o something_o further_o must_v yet_o be_v say_v to_o vindicate_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n in_o this_o dispensation_n 2._o therefore_o i_o say_v the_o original_a sin_n of_o child_n be_v enough_o to_o justify_v god_n in_o all_o his_o affliction_n of_o child_n nor_o be_v this_o that_o i_o know_v deny_v by_o any_o valuable_a or_o considerable_a party_n it_o be_v indeed_o the_o opinion_n of_o arminius_n that_o
