the_o final_a destruction_n of_o the_o world_n by_o fire_n for_o we_o can_v conceive_v no_o other_o reason_n why_o god_n shall_v final_o destroy_v this_o world_n but_o to_o put_v a_o end_n to_o the_o incurable_a wickedness_n of_o men._n and_o this_o be_v the_o account_n the_o scripture_n give_v we_o of_o it_o we_o find_v everywhere_o a_o deplorable_a description_n of_o the_o wickedness_n of_o destroy_v the_o world_n which_o he_o have_v make_v without_o great_a necessity_n for_o it_o reflect_v upon_o his_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n in_o make_v it_o the_o wise_a maker_n of_o the_o world_n can_v have_v no_o inclination_n to_o destroy_v it_o and_o though_o the_o justice_n of_o providence_n may_v require_v some_o more_o hasty_a execution_n to_o maintain_v good_a order_n and_o government_n and_o to_o give_v check_n to_o vice_n yet_o the_o final_a destruction_n of_o the_o world_n require_v all_o wise_a delay_n and_o sinner_n can_v expect_v no_o more_o of_o god_n than_o to_o defer_v their_o final_a sentence_n as_o long_o as_o he_o can_v defer_v the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n it_o be_v great_a pity_n that_o such_o goodness_n and_o patience_n shall_v be_v so_o monstrous_o abuse_v that_o man_n shall_v harden_v themselves_o in_o sin_n and_o conclude_v that_o god_n will_v not_o judge_v the_o world_n because_o he_o be_v so_o unwilling_a to_o destroy_v it_o but_o this_o will_v goodness_n to_o spare_v sinner_n as_o long_o as_o wisdom_n and_o justice_n can_v spare_v they_o to_o be_v slow_a to_o execute_v judgement_n be_v as_o essential_a to_o goodness_n as_o it_o be_v to_o justice_n at_o last_o to_o punish_v and_o to_o conclude_v that_o god_n will_v not_o punish_v at_o all_o because_o he_o be_v patient_a and_o delay_n to_o punish_v be_v to_o prove_v that_o god_n can_v be_v just_a because_o he_o be_v good_a 2._o that_o god_n destroy_v the_o world_n when_o he_o judge_v it_o be_v a_o undeniable_a proof_n of_o the_o severity_n of_o the_o last_o judgement_n for_o what_o can_v be_v serious_a but_o for_o some_o few_o minute_n let_v they_o imagine_v all_o the_o world_n on_o fire_n about_o they_o the_o heaven_n cover_v with_o thick_a darkness_n and_o the_o whole_a earth_n but_o one_o vulcano_n one_o aetna_n or_o vesuvius_n vomit_v up_o river_n of_o burn_a sulphur_n and_o themselves_o plunge_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o it_o let_v they_o try_v how_o they_o can_v bear_v this_o thought_n before_o they_o laugh_v at_o hell_n for_o this_o will_v certain_o be_v the_o state_n of_o sinner_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n and_o shall_v not_o this_o make_v we_o fear_v and_o tremble_v before_o that_o great_a and_o powerful_a judge_n who_o know_v the_o power_n of_o his_o wrath_n who_o can_v live_v with_o devour_a fire_n who_o can_v dwell_v with_o everlasting_a burn_n what_o a_o irresistible_a judge_n be_v he_o who_o can_v destroy_v the_o world_n and_o all_o sinner_n with_o it_o the_o world_n that_o be_v their_o god_n and_o now_o will_v be_v their_o funeral_n pile_n according_a to_o the_o fate_n of_o some_o heathen_a idolater_n they_o shall_v be_v sacrifice_v to_o their_o own_o god_n and_o torment_v in_o the_o embrace_n of_o a_o burn_a idol_n the_o destruction_n of_o the_o world_n give_v a_o terrible_a pomp_n and_o solemnity_n to_o the_o last_o judgement_n it_o will_v astonish_v bad_a man_n and_o break_v their_o stout_a heart_n to_o see_v the_o world_n in_o flame_n it_o will_v convince_v they_o to_o purpose_n that_o god_n be_v come_v to_o judge_v they_o and_o that_o he_o be_v very_o severe_a and_o terrible_a in_o his_o judgement_n who_o can_v describe_v the_o horror_n and_o agony_n and_o consternation_n of_o that_o day_n cast_v your_o thought_n back_o a_o little_a upon_o that_o terrible_a day_n when_o you_o see_v london_n on_o fire_n when_o you_o see_v your_o house_n and_o treasure_n all_o vanish_v into_o dust_n and_o smoke_n what_o do_v you_o think_v then_o of_o the_o power_n and_o justice_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v no_o more_o than_o a_o little_a boan-fire_n compare_v with_o the_o universal_a conflagration_n though_o you_o can_v not_o save_v your_o house_n and_o furniture_n and_o treasure_n from_o its_o rage_n and_o fury_n yet_o there_o be_v room_n leave_v for_o your_o own_o escape_n and_o if_o this_o be_v so_o amaze_a

condemn_v together_o those_o who_o tempt_v and_o those_o who_o be_v overcome_v by_o temptation_n the_o prince_n of_o darkness_n and_o all_o his_o subject_n whether_o angel_n or_o men._n hell_n be_v they_o be_v not_o very_o apt_a to_o think_v of_o it_o great_a power_n and_o great_a riches_n make_v they_o reverence_v and_o adore_v like_o so_o many_o little_a deity_n in_o this_o world_n all_o man_n court_v and_o flatter_v they_o and_o make_v a_o great_a distinction_n between_o they_o and_o those_o of_o a_o mean_a rank_n and_o fortune_n and_o this_o be_v apt_a to_o swell_v their_o mind_n they_o look_v down_o upon_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o world_n as_o very_o much_o below_o they_o and_o think_v they_o merit_v much_o when_o ever_o they_o look_v up_o to_o god_n for_o such_o great_a man_n as_o they_o be_v to_o worship_n god_n and_o lift_v up_o their_o eye_n sometime_o to_o heaven_n they_o imagine_v be_v so_o great_a a_o honour_n to_o god_n and_o credit_n to_o religion_n that_o a_o very_a little_a matter_n will_v be_v accept_v from_o they_o they_o see_v humane_a judicature_n very_o often_o have_v great_a respect_n for_o man_n person_n in_o judgement_n and_o they_o hope_v god_n will_v enemy_n that_o sow_v they_o be_v the_o devil_n as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v such_o man_n you_o be_v of_o your_o father_n the_o devil_n and_o his_o work_n you_o do_v the_o servant_n of_o the_o the_o church_n nay_o not_o put_v heretic_n to_o death_n to_o which_o some_o apply_v these_o word_n which_o be_v it_o reconcileable_a with_o the_o other_o law_n and_o with_o the_o genius_n and_o spirit_n of_o christianity_n as_o it_o be_v not_o will_v be_v as_o reconcileable_a with_o this_o parable_n as_o the_o execution_n of_o any_o other_o malefactor_n be_v this_o may_v be_v do_v without_o destroy_v the_o wheat_n nay_o in_o some_o case_n the_o wheat_n may_v be_v preserve_v by_o it_o for_o the_o punishment_n and_o execution_n of_o some_o bad_a man_n be_v necessary_a to_o preserve_v the_o innocent_a but_o when_o the_o tare_n be_v more_o than_o the_o wheat_n grow_v close_o together_o and_o be_v entangle_v in_o each_o other_o as_o the_o interest_n of_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n be_v intermix_v and_o interweave_v in_o this_o world_n there_o be_v great_a reason_n to_o spare_v the_o tare_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o the_o wheat_n but_o the_o tare_n must_v not_o expect_v to_o escape_v thus_o always_o a_o wise_a housholder_n in_o the_o time_n of_o harvest_n will_v order_v the_o reaper_n to_o separate_v between_o the_o tare_n and_o the_o wheat_n and_o then_o the_o tare_n shall_v be_v burn_v and_o the_o wheat_n gather_v into_o the_o barn_n and_o thus_o christ_n will_v separate_v between_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n at_o the_o last_o judgement_n and_o allot_v they_o very_o different_a portion_n all_o this_o be_v very_o reasonable_a thus_o a_o wise_a man_n will_v do_v and_o therefore_o this_o we_o must_v expect_v from_o the_o wife_n and_o just_a judge_n of_o the_o world_n this_o parable_n of_o the_o wheat_n and_o tare_n which_o grow_v together_o in_o the_o same_o field_n represent_v the_o mixture_n of_o believer_n and_o infidel_n the_o christian_a church_n and_o the_o man_n the_o world_n the_o angel_n shall_v not_o only_o separate_v between_o the_o church_n and_o the_o world_n between_o believer_n and_o infidel_n but_o between_o good_a and_o bad_a christian_n who_o live_v together_o in_o the_o same_o communion_n in_o this_o world_n the_o angel_n shall_v come_v forth_o and_o sever_v the_o wicked_a from_o among_o the_o just_a and_o shall_v cast_v they_o into_o just_o and_o holy_a than_o man_n be_v and_o this_o give_v authority_n to_o allthe_a argument_n for_o a_o future_a judgement_n draw_v from_o the_o reason_n and_o nature_n of_o thing_n thus_o our_o saviour_n reason_n and_o thus_o he_o have_v teach_v we_o to_o reason_n for_o the_o fundamental_a principle_n on_o which_o all_o these_o parable_n rest_n be_v this_o that_o whatever_o be_v manifest_o just_a and_o wise_a and_o reasonable_a for_o man_n to_o do_v that_o god_n will_v do_v if_o this_o be_v not_o true_a the_o parable_n of_o our_o saviour_n have_v his_o authority_n but_o have_v no_o reason_n though_o the_o nature_n of_o such_o parable_n be_v a_o appeal_n to_o the_o reason_n of_o mankind_n and_o if_o this_o be_v true_a than_o we_o may_v argue_v thus_o in_o other_o case_n which_o be_v equal_o plain_a and_o obvious_a and_o be_v sound_v upon_o the_o same_o reason_n which_o give_v a_o kind_n of_o divine_a authority_n to_o the_o plain_a and_o necessary_a dictate_v of_o reason_n in_o this_o matter_n and_o then_o i_o be_o sure_a i_o have_v furnish_v you_o with_o reason_n enough_o already_o for_o the_o belief_n of_o a_o future_a judgement_n 3._o the_o whole_a christian_a religion_n be_v found_v on_o and_o adapt_v to_o the_o belief_n of_o a_o future_a judgement_n and_o be_v a_o very_a unintelligible_a institution_n without_o it_o and_o therefore_o this_o must_v be_v a_o first_o principle_n to_o all_o who_o call_v themselves_o christian_n if_o they_o understand_v the_o religion_n they_o profess_v as_o to_o show_v this_o particular_o 1._o the_o chief_a promise_n and_o threaten_n of_o the_o gospel_n relate_v to_o the_o other_o world_n godliness_n indeed_o have_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o life_n that_o now_o be_v as_o well_o as_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v but_o the_o temporal_a promise_n make_v to_o a_o holy_a and_o virtuous_a life_n be_v such_o as_o worldly_a mind_a man_n can_v much_o value_n they_o extend_v no_o far_o than_o food_n and_o promise_v to_o do_v so_o in_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n sometime_o he_o do_v it_o not_o so_o much_o to_o reward_v good_a man_n for_o temporal_a thing_n be_v not_o the_o proper_a reward_n of_o piety_n and_o virtue_n as_o to_o serve_v the_o end_n of_o his_o providence_n in_o the_o world_n he_o take_v care_n of_o good_a man_n to_o supply_v their_o want_n and_o necessity_n here_o which_o be_v all_o that_o a_o perfect_a virtue_n require_v but_o he_o reward_v they_o hereafter_o and_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o absolute_o promise_v neither_o for_o our_o saviour_n teach_v we_o to_o take_v up_o his_o cross_n to_o expect_v suffering_n and_o persecution_n for_o his_o name_n sake_n and_o then_o we_o must_v be_v content_v to_o want_v food_n and_o raiment_n to_o part_v with_o house_n and_o land_n and_o life_n itself_o for_o his_o sake_n and_o our_o condition_n may_v be_v so_o afflict_v and_o calamitous_a here_o that_o it_o may_v force_v we_o to_o say_v as_o s._n paul_n do_v if_o in_o this_o next_o world_n lake_n of_o fire_n and_o brimstone_n blackness_n of_o darkness_n the_o worm_n that_o never_o die_v and_o the_o fire_n that_o never_o go_v out_o but_o the_o gospel_n threaten_v no_o temporal_a punishment_n against_o sin_n bad_a man_n be_v very_o often_o punish_v in_o this_o world_n when_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o divine_a providence_n see_v fit_a and_o they_o very_o often_o escape_v too_o and_o be_v much_o more_o prosperous_a than_o good_a man_n be_v here_o that_o there_o be_v no_o threaten_v in_o the_o gospel_n to_o restrain_v the_o impiety_n of_o man_n but_o only_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o other_o world_n and_o a_o future_a judgement_n and_o if_o you_o take_v away_o these_o you_o destroy_v the_o gospel_n of_o our_o saviour_n 2._o many_o of_o our_o saviour_n law_n be_v found_v on_o the_o supposition_n of_o a_o future_a judgement_n and_o be_v extreme_o unreasonable_a if_o there_o be_v no_o reward_n or_o punishment_n after_o this_o life_n that_o if_o we_o will_v but_o allow_v he_o the_o ordinary_a prudence_n of_o a_o lawgiver_n a_o future_a judgement_n must_v be_v the_o foundation_n of_o his_o religion_n if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o life_n after_o this_o the_o only_a rule_n of_o our_o action_n will_v be_v to_o live_v as_o long_o and_o to_o enjoy_v as_o much_o of_o this_o world_n as_o we_o can_v but_o christian_a religion_n in_o many_o case_n will_v not_o allow_v of_o this_o and_o therefore_o be_v no_o religion_n for_o this_o world_n be_v there_o not_o another_o world_n to_o follow_v to_o begin_v with_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o this_o world_n how_o many_o restraint_n do_v the_o christian_a religion_n lie_v on_o we_o to_o lessen_v the_o pleasure_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o this_o life_n it_o teach_v we_o a_o great_a indifferency_n to_o all_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n but_o how_o unreasonable_a be_v that_o if_o this_o world_n be_v our_o only_a place_n of_o happiness_n for_o who_o can_v be_v indifferent_a whether_o he_o be_v happy_a or_o not_o it_o command_v we_o to_o mortify_v our_o sensual_a appetite_n to_o crucify_v the_o flesh_n with_o its_o affection_n and_o lust_n to_o live_v above_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o body_n to_o pluck_v out_o our_o right_a eye_n and_o to_o cut_v off_o our_o right_a hand_n but_o what_o reason_n can_v there_o be_v to_o deny_v ourselves_o any_o of_o these_o enjoyment_n as_o far_o as_o be_v consistent_a with_o preserve_v our_o health_n and_o prolong_v our_o life_n if_o we_o have_v no_o expectation_n after_o death_n nay_o if_o man_n be_v content_v to_o live_v a_o short_a and_o a_o merry_a life_n what_o hurt_n be_v there_o in_o it_o if_o death_n put_v a_o end_n to_o they_o it_o forbid_v we_o to_o lay_v up_o for_o ourselves_o treasure_n on_o earth_n which_o be_v a_o strange_a command_n be_v there_o not_o great_a treasure_n to_o be_v expect_v in_o heaven_n it_o forbid_v earthly_a pride_n and_o ambition_n a_o affectation_n of_o secular_a honour_n and_o power_n but_o why_o must_v we_o submit_v to_o meanness_n and_o contempt_n in_o this_o world_n if_o this_o be_v the_o only_a scene_n of_o action_n we_o shall_v ever_o be_v concern_v in_o for_o a_o mean_a and_o base_a spirit_n be_v no_o virtue_n and_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n it_o can_v be_v no_o virtue_n to_o be_v content_v with_o a_o low_a fortune_n to_o be_v patient_a under_o suffering_n which_o if_o they_o will_v never_o be_v reward_v be_v to_o be_v patient_o miserable_a and_o that_o be_v stupidity_n and_o folly_n but_o to_o have_v our_o conversation_n in_o heaven_n to_o live_v upon_o the_o hope_n of_o unseen_a thing_n be_v madness_n and_o distraction_n if_o there_o be_v no_o heaven_n no_o unseen_a thing_n for_o we_o the_o law_n of_o our_o saviour_n require_v we_o in_o some_o case_n to_o sacrifice_v the_o dear_a interest_n we_o have_v in_o this_o world_n and_o life_n itself_o for_o his_o sake_n which_o be_v a_o senseless_a and_o unreasonable_a command_n if_o he_o do_v not_o intend_v to_o bestow_v a_o better_a life_n on_o we_o if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o life_n after_o this_o no_o wise_a man_n will_v forfeit_v more_o for_o any_o religion_n than_o it_o be_v worth_a in_o this_o world_n and_o that_o will_v reach_v but_o a_o little_a way_n in_o suffer_v nor_o be_v our_o saviour_n so_o unreasonable_a as_o to_o require_v it_o upon_o these_o term_n but_o tell_v we_o plain_o whosoever_o will_v with_o other_o matter_n that_o they_o forget_v it_o unless_o they_o happen_v to_o hear_v a_o sermon_n about_o it_o or_o some_o accidental_a mention_n of_o it_o which_o when_o they_o return_v to_o their_o worldly_a affair_n and_o business_n they_o quick_o forget_v again_o 1_o sy_n man_n be_v very_o apt_a to_o avoid_v all_o thought_n of_o judgement_n because_o they_o be_v very_o uneasy_a and_o never_o be_v any_o thing_n like_o it_o all_o the_o roman_a triumph_n in_o comparison_n with_o this_o be_v but_o like_o the_o sport_n and_o apish_a imitation_n of_o child_n let_v we_o then_o particular_o but_o brief_o consider_v the_o several_a part_n of_o it_o christ_n shall_v come_v in_o his_o own_o glory_n and_o in_o his_o father_n and_o of_o the_o holy_a angel_n in_o his_o own_o glory_n that_o must_v signify_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o person_n that_o be_v the_o glory_n of_o a_o incarnate_a god_n his_o body_n will_v be_v bright_a and_o glorious_a as_o the_o sun_n so_o it_o be_v when_o he_o be_v transfigure_v before_o they_o on_o the_o mount_n his_o face_n do_v shine_v like_o the_o sâ—â—_n and_o his_o raiment_n be_v white_a as_o the_o light_n 17_o matth._n 2._o and_o also_o be_v the_o resurrection_n of_o the_o dead_a 1_o cor._n 15.41_o 42._o with_o what_o glory_n then_o will_v our_o lord_n appear_v when_o he_o come_v to_o judgement_n if_o the_o righteous_a shall_v shine_v forth_o like_o the_o sun_n how_o bright_a will_v the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n himself_o be_v if_o mere_a creature_n shall_v appear_v so_o glorious_a what_o will_v the_o glory_n of_o a_o incarnate_a god_n be_v for_o he_o will_v not_o then_o appear_v as_o a_o glorious_a creature_n but_o as_o a_o visible_a god_n as_o i_o observe_v before_o his_o godhead_n will_v shine_v through_o his_o universal_a judge_n this_o be_v a_o great_a glory_n for_o authority_n and_o power_n carry_v reverence_n and_o majesty_n with_o it_o whatever_o man_n personal_a qualification_n be_v though_o upon_o all_o other_o account_v they_o be_v much_o inferior_a to_o their_o neighbour_n yet_o the_o character_n of_o a_o judge_n make_v they_o venerable_a especial_o to_o those_o who_o must_v be_v judge_v by_o if_o a_o ordinary_a judge_n of_o assize_n be_v look_v on_o with_o so_o much_o reverence_n and_o awe_n what_o be_v the_o glory_n and_o majesty_n of_o a_o universal_a judge_n how_o will_v all_o the_o world_n fall_v and_o bow_n and_o tremble_v before_o he_o who_o with_o the_o word_n of_o his_o mouth_n can_v sentence_v they_o to_o eternal_a life_n or_o death_n this_o be_v his_o father_n glory_n for_o he_o be_v the_o natural_a lord_n and_o judge_n of_o the_o world_n and_o from_o he_o he_o receive_v this_o authority_n to_o judge_v the_o world_n the_o father_n judge_v no_o man_n but_o have_v commit_v all_o judgement_n to_o the_o son_n that_o all_o man_n shall_v honour_v the_o son_n even_o as_o they_o honour_v the_o father_n 5_o john_n 22_o 23._o to_o this_o glory_n he_o be_v now_o advance_v and_o we_o must_v now_o obey_v and_o reverence_n and_o adore_v he_o as_o our_o judge_n but_o it_o will_v give_v a_o visible_a majesty_n to_o he_o when_o he_o thus_o come_v in_o the_o glory_n multitude_n have_v something_o great_a and_o awful_a in_o it_o especial_o when_o this_o multitude_n be_v all_o his_o dependent_n servant_n and_o minister_n and_o more_o still_o when_o every_o one_o have_v all_o the_o power_n of_o heaven_n attend_v he_o to_o execute_v his_o vengeance_n on_o man_n and_o devil_n this_o glorious_a judge_n shall_v at_o the_o last_o day_n come_v down_o from_o heaven_n for_o thither_o he_o ascend_v after_o his_o resurrection_n from_o the_o dead_a and_o there_o he_o must_v continue_v till_o he_o come_v to_o judge_v the_o world_n but_o then_o the_o lord_n himself_o not_o judge_n the_o world_n with_o it_o too_o this_o shout_n be_v the_o shout_n of_o the_o holy_a angel_n begin_v by_o the_o voice_n of_o the_o archangel_n in_o their_o descent_n with_o christ_n and_o those_o who_o commit_v all_o those_o villainy_n which_o they_o only_o please_v themselves_o with_o the_o fancy_n of_o our_o likeness_n to_o god_n consist_v only_o in_o the_o conformity_n of_o our_o
