the LORD hath not sent me 30 But if the LORD † Heb. create a creature make a new thing and the earth open her mouth and swallow them up with all that appertain unto them and they go down quick into the pit then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD 31 ¶ * Ch. 27.3 Deut. 11.6 Ps 106.17 And it came to pass as he had made an end of speaking all these words that the ground clave asunder that was under them 32 And the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up their houses and all the men that appertained unto Korah and all their goods 33 They and all that appertained to them went down alive into the pit and the earth closed upon them and they perished from among the congregation 34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them for they said Lest the earth swallow us up also 35 And there came out a fire from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense 36 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 37 Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest that he take up the censers out of the burning and scatter thou the fire yonder for they are hallowed 38 The censers of these sinners against their own souls let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar for they offered them before the LORD therefore they are hallowed and they shall be a signe unto the children of Israel 39 And Eleazar the priest took the brasen censers wherewith they that were burnt had offered and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar 40 To be a memorial unto the children of Israel that no stranger which is not of the seed of Aaron come near to offer incense before the LORD that he be not as Korah and as his company as the LORD said to him by the hand of Moses 41 ¶ But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron saying Ye have killed the people of the LORD 42 And it came to pass when the congregation was gathered against Moses and against Aaron that they looked toward the tabernacle of the congregation and behold the cloud covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared 43 And Moses and Aaron came before the tabernacle of the congregation 44 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 45 Get you up from among this congregation that I may consume them as in a moment and they fell upon their faces 46 ¶ And Moses said unto Aaron Take a censer and put fire therein from off the altar and put on incense and go quickly unto the congregation and make an atonement for them for there is wrath gone out from the LORD the plague is begun 47 And Aaron took as Moses commanded and ran into the midst of the congregation and behold the plague was begun among the people and he put on incense and made an atonement for the people 48 And he stood between the dead and the living and the plague was stayed 49 Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred beside them that died about the matter of Korah 50 And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and the plague was stayed CHAP. XVIII 1 The charge of the priests and Levites 9 The priests portion 21 The Levites portion 25 The beave-offering to the priests out of the Levites portion ANd the LORD said unto Aaron Thou and thy sons and thy fathers house with thee shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood 2 And thy brethren also of the tribe of Levi the tribe of thy father bring thou with thee that they may be joyned unto thee and minister unto thee but thou and thy sons with thee shall minister before the tabernacle of witness 3 And they shall keep thy charge and the charge of all the tabernacle onely they shall not come nigh the vessels of the sanctuary and the altar that neither they nor you also die 4 And they shall be joyned unto thee and keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation for all the service of the tabernacle and a stranger shall not come nigh unto you 5 And ye shall keep the charge of the sanctuary and the charge of the altar that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel 6 And I behold I have * Chap. 3.45 taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel to you they are given as a gift for the LORD to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation

When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel after † Heb. them that are to be numbred their number then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD when thou numbrest them that there be no plague amongst them when thou numbrest them 13 This they shall give every one that passeth among them that are numbred half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary * Lev. 27.25 Numb 3.47 Ezek. 45.12 A shekel is twenty gerahs an hall-shekel shall be the offering of the LORD 14 Every one that passeth among them that are numbred from twenty years old and above shall give an offering unto the LORD 15 The rich shall not † Heb. multiply give more and the poor shall not † Heb. diminish give less then hall a shekel when they give an offering unto the LORD to make an atonement for your souls 16 And thou shalt take the atonement-money of the children of Israel and shalt appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of the congregation that it may be a memorial unto the children of Israel before the LORD to make an atonement for your souls 17 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 18 Thou shalt also make a laver of brass and his foot also of brass to wash withal and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar and thou shalt put water therein 19 For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands their feet thereat 20 When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation they shall wash with water that they die not or when they come near to the altar to minister to burn offering made by fire unto the LORD 21 So they shall wash their hands and their feet that they die not and it shall be a statute for e●er to them even to him and to his seed throughout their generations 22 ¶ Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses saying 23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices of pure myrrh five hundred shekels and of sweet cinnamon half so much even two hundred and fifty shekels and of sweet calamus two hundred fifty shekels 24 And of cassia five hundred shekels after the shekel of the sanctuary and of oyl-olive an * Chap. ● 29.40 hin 25 And thou shalt make it an oyl of holy ointment an ointment compound after the art of the ‖ Or perfumer apothecary it shall be an holy anointing oyl 26 And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith and the ark of the testimony 27 And the table and all his vessels and the candlestick and his vessels and the altar of incense 28 And the altar of burnt-offering with all his vessels and the laver and his foot 29 And thou shalt sanctifie them that they may be most holy whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy 30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them that they may minister unto me in the priests office 31 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel saying This shall be an holy anointing oyl unto me throughout your generations 32 Upon mans flesh shall it not be poured neither shall ye make any other like it after the composition of it it is holy and it shall be holy unto you 33 Whosoever compoundeth any like it or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger shall even be cut off from his people 34 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Take unto thee sweet spices stacte and onycha and galbanum these sweet spices with pure frankincense of each shall there be a like weight 35 And thou shalt make it a perfume a confection after the art of the apothecary † Heb. s●ited tempered together pure and holy 36 And thou shalt beat some of it very small and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation where I will meet with thee it shall be unto you most holy 37 And as for the perfume which thou shalt make you shall not make to your selves according to the composition thereof it shall be unto thee holy for the LORD 38 Whosoever shall make like unto
hanging of the door to the tabernacle 6 And thou shalt set the altar of the burnt-offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation 7 And thou shalt set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar and shalt put water therein 8 And thou shalt set up the court round about and hang up the hanging at the court-gate 9 And thou shalt take the anointing oyl and anoint the tabernacle and all that is therein and shalt hallow it and all the vessels thereof and it shall be holy 10 And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt-offering and all his vessels and sanctifie the altar and it shall be an altar † Heb. holiness of holinesses most holy 11 And thou shalt anoint the laver and his foot and sanctifie it 12 And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and wash them with water 13 And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments and anoint him sanctifie him that he may minister unto me in the priests office 14 And thou shalt bring his sons and clothe them with coats 15 And thou shalt anoint them as thou didst anoint their father that they may minister unto me in the priests office for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priest-hood throughout their generations 16 Thus did Moses according to all that the LORD commanded him so did he 17 ¶ And it came to pass in the first moneth in the second year on the first day of the moneth that the * Num. 7. ●● tabernacle was reared up 18 And Moses reared up the tabernacle and fastned his sockets and set up the boards thereof and put in the bars thereof and reared up his pillars 19 And he spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent above upon it as the LORD commanded Moses 20 ¶ And he took and put the testimony into the ark and set the staves on the ark and put the mercy-seat above upon the ark 21 And he brought the ark into the tabernacle and * Ch. 35. ●● set up the vail of the covering and covered the ark of the testimony as the LORD commanded Moses 22 ¶ And he put the table in the tent of the congregation upon the side of the tabernacle north-ward without the vail 23 And he set the bread in order upon it before the LORD as the LORD had commanded Moses 24 ¶ And he put the candlestick in the tent of the congregation over against the table on the side of the tabernacle south-ward 25 And he lighted the lamps before the LORD as the LORD commanded Moses 26 ¶ And he put the golden altar in the tent of the congregation before the vail 27 And he burnt sweet incense thereon as the LORD commanded Moses 28 ¶ And he set up the hanging at the door of the tabernacle 29 And he put the altar of burnt-offering by the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation and offered upon it the burnt-offering and the meat-offering as the * Ch. 30. ●● LORD commanded Moses 30 ¶ And he set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar and put water there to wash withal 31 And Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet thereat 32 When they went into the tent of the congregation when they came near unto the altar they washed as the LORD commanded Moses 33 And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar and set up the hanging of the court-gate so Moses finished the work 34 ¶ * Numb 9.15 1 King 8.10 Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle 35 And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation because the cloud abode thereon and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle 36 And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle the children of Israel † Heb. journeyed went onward in all their journeys 37 But if the cloud were not taken up then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up 38 For the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day and fire was on it by night in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys The third book of Moses called LEVITICUS CHAP. I. 1 The burnt-offerings 3 of the herd 10 of the f●ocks 14 of the fowls ANd the LORD called unto Moses and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation saying 2 Speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD ye shall bring your offering of the cattel even of the herd and of the flock 3 If his offering be a brunt-sacrifice of the herd let him offer a male without blemish he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD 4 * E●od 19.10 And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt-offering and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him 5 And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD and the priests Aarons sons shall bring the blo●d and sprinkle the bloud round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 6 And he shall flay the burnt-offering and cut it into his pieces 7 And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire upon the altar and lay the wood in order upon the fire 8 And the priests Aarons sons shall lay the parts the head the fat in order upon the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar 9 But his inwards and his legs shall he wash in water and the priest shall burn all on the altar to be a burnt-sacrifice an offering made by fire of a sweet favour unto the LORD 10 ¶ And if his offering be of the flocks namely of the sheep or of the goats for a burnt-sacrifice he shall bring it a male without blemish 11 And he shall kill it on the side of the altar north-ward before the LORD and the priests Aarons sons shall sprinkle his bloud round ●●out upon the altar 12 And he shall cut it into his pieces with his head and his fat and the priest shall lay them in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar 13 But he shall wash the inwards and the legs with water and the priests shall bring it all and burn it upon the altar it is a burnt-sacrifice an offering made by fire of a sweet savour unto the LORD 14 ¶ And if the burnt-sacrifice for his offering to the LORD be of fowls then he shall bring his offering of turtle-doves or of young pigeons 15 And the priest shall bring it unto the altar and ‖ Or pinch of the
bead with the nail wring off his head and burn it on the altar and the bloud thereof shall be wrung out at the side of the altar 16 And he shall pluck away his crop with ‖ Or the filth thereof his feathers and cast it beside the altar on the east-part by the place of the ashes 17 And he shall cleave it with the wings thereof but shall not divide it asunder and the priest shall burn it upon the altar upon the wood that is upon the fire it is a burnt-sacrifice an offering made by fire of a sweet savour unto the LORD CHAP. II. 1 The meat-offering of flour with oyl and incense 4 either baken in the oven 5 or on a plate 7 or in a frying-pan 12 or of the first-fruits in the ear 13 The salt of the meat-offering ANd when any will offer a meat-offering unto the LORD his offering shall be of fine flour and he shall pour oyl upon it and put frankincense thereon 2 And he shall bring it to Aarons sons the priests and he shall take thereout his handful of the flour thereof and of the oyl thereof with all the frankincense thereof and the priest shall burn the memorial of it upon the altar to be an offering made by fire of a sweet savour unto the LORD 3 And * Ecclus 7.31 the remnant of the meat offering shall be Aarons and his sons it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire 4 ¶ And if thou bring an oblation of a meat-offering baken in the oven it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with oyl or unleavened waters anointed with oyl 5 ¶ And if thy oblation be a meat-offering baken ‖ Or on a flat plate or slite in a pan it shall be of fine flour unleavened mingled with oyl 6 Thou shalt part it in pieces pour oyl thereon it is a meat-offering 7 ¶ And if thy oblation be a meat-offering baken in the frying-pan it shall be made of fine flour with oyl 8 And thou shalt bring the meat offering that is made of these things unto the LORD and when it is presented unto the priest he shall bring it unto the altar 9 And the priest shall take from the meat-offering * Pet. 2. a memorial thereof and shall burn it upon the altar it is an * Exod. 29.18 offering made by fire of a sweet savour unto the LORD 10 And that which is lest of the meat-offering shall be Aarons and his sons it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire 11 No meat-offering which ye shall bring unto the LORD shall be made with leaven for ye shall burn no leaven nor any honey in any offering of the LORD made by fire 12 ¶ As for the oblation of the first-fruits ye shall offer them unto the LORD but they shall not † Heb. astend be burnt on the altar for a sweet savour 13 And every oblation of thy meat-offering * Mar. 9. ●● shalt thou season with salt neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat-offering with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt 14 And if thou offer a meat-offering of thy first-fruits unto the LORD thou shalt offer for the meat-offering of thy first-fruits green ears of corn dried by the fire even corn beaten out of full ears 15 And thou shalt put oyl upon it and lay frankincense thereon it is a meat-offering 16 And the priest shall burn the memorial of it part of the beaten corn thereof and part of the oyl thereof with all the frankincense thereof it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD CHAP. III. 1 The peace-offering of the herd 6 of the flock 7 either a lamb 12 or a goat ANd if his oblation be a sacrifice of peace-offering if he offer it of the herd whether it be a male or female he shall offer it without blemish before the LORD 2 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering and kill it at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and Aarons sons the priests shall sprinkle the bloud upon the altar round about 3 And he shall offer of the sacrifice of the peace-offering an offering made by fire unto the LORD * Exod. 29.21 the ‖ Or su●t fat that covereth the inwards and all the fat that is upon the inwards 4 And the two kidneys and the fat that is on them which is by the flanks and the ‖ Or midriff over the liver and over the kidneys caul above the liver with the kidneys it shall he take away 5 And Aarons sons shall burn it on the altar upon the burnt-sacrifice which is upon the wood that is on the fire it is an offering made by fire of a sweet savour unto the LORD 6 ¶ And if his offering for a sacrifice of peace-offering unto the LORD be of the flock male or female he shall offer it without blemish 7 If he offer a lamb for his offering then shall he offer it before the LORD 8 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering and kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation and Aarons sons shall sprinkle the bloud thereof round about upon the altar 9 And he shall offer of the sacrifice of the peace-offering an offering made by fire unto the LORD the fat thereof and the whole rump it shall be take off hard by the back-bone and the fat that covereth the inwards and all the fat that is upon the inwards 10 And the two kidneys and the fat that is upon them which is by the flanks and the caul above the liver with the kidneys it shall be take away 11 And the priest shall burn it upon the altar it is the food of the offering made by fire unto the LORD 12 ¶ And if his offering be a goat then he shall offer it before the LORD 13 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of it and kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle the bloud thereof upon the altar round about 14 And he shall offer thereof his offering even an offering made by fire unto the LORD the fat that covereth the inwards and all the fat that is upon the inwards 15 And the two kidneys and the fat that is upon them which is by the flanks and the caul above the liver with the kidneys it shall he take away 16 And the priest shall burn them upon the altar it is the food of the offering made by fire for a sweet savour * Ch. 7.25 All the fat is the LORDS 17 It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings that ye eat neither fat nor * Gen. 9.4 Chap. 7.25 17.14 bloud CHAP. IV. 1 The sin-offering of ignorance 3 for the priest 13 for the
unclean thing 4 or in making an oath 6 His trespass-offering of the flock 7 of fowls 11 or of flour 14 The trespass-offering in sacriledge 17 and in sins of ignorance ANd if a soul sin and hear the voice of swearing and is a witness whether he hath seen or known of it if he do not utter it then he shall bear his iniquity 2 Or if a soul touch any unclean thing whether it be a carcase of an unclean beast or a carcase of unclean cattel or the carcase of unclean creeping things and if it be hidden from him he also shall be unclean and guilty 3 Or if he touch the uncleanness of man whatsoever uncleanness it be that a man shall be defiled withal and it be hid from him when he knoweth of it then he shall be guilty 4 Or if a soul swear pronouncing with his lips to do evil or to do good whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath and it be hid from him when he knoweth of it then he shall be guilty in one of these 5 And it shall be when he shall be guilty in one of these things that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing 6 And he shall bring his trespass-offering unto the LORD for his sin which he hath sinned a female from the flock a lamb or a kid of the goats for a sin offering and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his sin 7 And if † Heb. his hand cannot reach to the sufficiency of a lamb he be not able to bring a lamb then he shall bring for his trespass which he hath committed two turtle-doves or two young pigeons unto the LORD one for a sin-offering and the other for a burnt-offering 8 And he shall bring them unto the priest who shall offer that which is for the sin-offering first and * Ch. 1.15 wring off his head from his neck but shall not divide it asunder 9 And he shall sprinkle of the bloud of the sin-offering upon the side of the altar and the rest of the bloud shall be wrung out at the bottom of the altar it is a sin-offering 10 And he shall offer the second for a burnt-offering according to the ‖ Or ordinance manner and the priest shall make an atonement for him for his sin which he had sinned and it shall be forgiven him 11 ¶ But if he be not able to bring two turtle-doves or two young pigeons then he that sinned shall bring for his offering the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin-offering he shall put no oyl upon it neither shall he put any frankincense thereon for it is a sin-offering 12 Then shall he bring it to the priest and the priest shall take his handful of it * Ch. 2.2 even a memorial thereof and burn it on the altar * Ch. 4.35 according to the offerings made by fire unto the LORD it is a sin-offering 13 And the priest shall make an atonement for him as touching his sin that he hath sinned in one of these and it shall be forgiven him and the remnant shall be the priests as a meat-offering 14 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 15 If a soul commit a trespass and sin through ignorance in the holy things of the LORD then he shall bring for his trespass unto the LORD a ram without blem●sh out of the flocks with thy estimation by shekels of silver after the shekel of the sanctuary for a trespass offering 16 And he shall make amends for the harm that he hath done in the holy thing and shall add the fifth part thereto and give it unto the priest and the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass-offering and it shall be forgiven him 17 ¶ And if a * Chap. ● 2 soul sin and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the LORD though he wist it not yet is he guilty and shall bear his iniquity 18 And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock with thy estimation for a trespass offering unto the priest and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist it not and it shall be forgiven him 10 It is a trespass offering he hath certainly trespassed against the LORD CHAP. VI. 1 The trespass-offering for sins done wittingly 8 The law of the burnt-offering 14 and of the meat-offering 19 The offering at the consecration of a priest 24 The law of the sin-offering ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 If a soul sin and commit a trespass against the LORD and lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep or in ‖ Or 〈◊〉 ●●a●ing † Heb. putting of the hand fellowship or in a thing taken away by violence or hath deceived his neighbour 3 Or have found that which was lost and lieth concerning it and * Numb 5.6 sweareth fal●ly in any of all these that a man doeth sinning therein 4 Then it shall be because he hath sinned and is guilty that he shall restore that which he took violently away or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten or that which was delivered him to keep or the lost thing which he found 5 Or all that about which he hath sworn falsly he shall even * Chap 5.16 restore it in the principal and shall add the fifth part more thereto and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth ‖ Or in the day of his being found guilty † Heb. in the day of his trespas● in the day of his trespass-offering 6 And he shall bring his trespass-offering unto the LORD a ram without blemish out of the * Ch. 5.15 flock with thy estimation for a trespass-offering unto the priest 7 And the priest shall make an atonement for him before the LORD and it shall be forgiven him for any thing of all that he hath done in trespassing therein 8 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 9 Command Aaron and his sons saying This is the law of the burnt-offering It is the burnt-offering ‖ Or for the burning because of the burning upon the altar all night unto the morning the fire of the altar shall be burning in it 10 And the priest shall put on his linen garment and his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh and take up the ashes which the fire hath consumed with the burnt-offering on the altar and he shall put them besides the altar 11 And he shall put off his garments and put on other garments and carry forth the ashes without the camp unto a clean place 12 And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it it shall not be put out and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning and lay the burnt-offering in order upon it and he shall burn thereon

When thou hast eaten and art full then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee 11 Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God in not keeping his commandments and his judgements and his statutes which I command thee this day 12 Lest when thou hast eaten and art full and hast built goodly houses and dwelt therein 13 And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply and thy silver and thy gold is multiplyed and all that thou hast is multiplied 14 Then thine heart be lifted up and thou forget the LORD thy God which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt from the house of bondage 15 Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness wherein were fiery serpents and scorpions and drought where there was no water * Num. 20.11 who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint 16 Who fed thee in the wilderness with * Exod. 16.15 manna which thy fathers knew not that he might humble thee and that he might prove thee to do thee good at thy latter end 17 And thou say in thine heart My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth 18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers as it is this day 19 And it shall be if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God and walk after other gods and serve them and worship them I testifie against you this day that ye shall surely perish 20 As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face so shall ye perish because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God CHAP. IX 1 Moses diss●adeth them from the opinion of their own righteousness by rehearsing their several rebellions HEar O Israel Thou art to pass over Jordan this day to go in to possess nations greater and mightier then thy self cities great and senced up to heaven 2 A people great and tall * Num. 13.28 the children of the Anakims whom thou knowest and of whom thou hast heard say Who can stand before the children of Anak 3 Understand therefore this day that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee as a * Ch. 4.24 Heb. 12.29 consuming fire he shall destroy them and he shall bring them down before thy face so shalt thou drive them out and destroy them quickly as the LORD hath said unto thee 4 Speal not thou in thine heart after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee saying For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee 5 Not for thy righteousness or for the uprightness of thine heart dost thou go to possess their land but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee and that he may perf●rm the word which the LORD sware unto thy fathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob. 6 Understand therefore that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness for thou art a stiff-necked people 7 ¶ Remember and forget not how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt until ye came unto this place ye have been rebellious against the LORD 8 Also in Horeb ye provoked the LORD to wrath so that the LORD was angry with you to have destroyed you 9 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you then * Exod. 24.28 34.28 I abode in the mount fourty days and fourty nights I neither did eat bread nor drink water 10 * Ex. 31.18 And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the singer of God and on them was written according to all the words which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the mid●t of fire in the day of the assembly 11 And it came to pass at the end of fourty days and fourty nights that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone even the tables of the covenant 12 And the LORD said unto me * Exod. 32.7 Arise get thee down quickly from hence for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them they have made them a molten image 13 Furthermore the LORD spake unto me saying I have seen this people and behold it is a stiff-necked people 14 Let me alone that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater then they 15 So I turned and came down from the mount and the mount burned with fire and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands 16 And I looked and behold ye had sinned against the LORD your God and had made you a molten calf ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which the LORD had commanded you 17 And I took the two tables and cast them out of my two hands and brake them before your eyes 18 And I fell down before the LORD as at the first fourty days and fourty nights I did neither eat bread nor drink water because of all your sins which ye sinned in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger 19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure wherewith the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you But the LORD hearkned unto me at that time also 20 And the LORD was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him and I prayed for Aaron also the same time 21 And I took your sin the calf which ye had made and burnt it with fire and stamped it and ground it very small even until it was as small as dust and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount 22 And at * Num. 11.1 3. Taberah and at * Exod. 17.7 Massah and at * Numb 11.34 Kibroth-hattaavah ye provoked the LORD to wrath 23 Likewise when the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea saying Go up and possess the land which I have given you then you rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God and ye beleeved him not nor hearkened to his voice 24 You have
himself to David with his face to the ground 22 Then David said to Ornan † Heb. 〈◊〉 Grant me the place of this threshing-floor that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD thou shalt 〈◊〉 it me for the full price that the plague may be stayed from the people 23 And Ornan said unto David Take it to thee and let my lord the kings do that which is good in his eyes ●o I give thee the exen also for burnt-offerings and the threshing-instruments for wood and the wheat for the meat offering I give it all 24 And king David said to Ornan Nay but I will verily buy it for the full price for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD nor offer burnt-offerings without cost 25 So * 2 Sam. 24.24 David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight 26 And David built there an altar unto the LORD and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings and called upon the LORD and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt-offering 27 And the LORD commanded the angel and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof 28 ¶ At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite then he sacrificed there 29 For the tabernacle or the LORD which Moses made in the wilderness and the altar of the burnt-offering were at that season in the high place at * 1 Kin. 3.4 Ch. 16.30 2 Chr. 1.3 Gibeon 30 But David could not go before it to enquire of God for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD CHAP. XXII 1 David oreknowing the place of the temple prepareth abundance for the building of it 6 He instructeth Solomon in Gods promises and his duty in building the temple 17 He chargeth the princes to assist his son THen David said This is the house of the LORD God and this is the altar of the burnt-offering for Israel 2 And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God 3 And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates and for the joynings and brass in abundance without weight 4 Also cedar-trees in abundance for the Zidonians and they of Tyre brought much cedar-wood to David 5 And David said * Chap. 29.1 Solomon my son is young and tender and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding magnifical of same and of glory throughout all countreys I will therefore now make preparation for it So David prepared abundantly before his death 6 ¶ Then he called for Solomon his son and charged him to build an house for the LORD God of Israel 7 And David said to Solomon My son as for me it was in my minde to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God 8 But the word of the LORD came to me saying * Chap. 28.3 Thou hast shed bloud abundantly and hast made great wars thou shalt not build an house unto my name because thou hast shed much bloud upon the earth in my sight 9 Behold a son shall be born to thee who shall be a man of rest and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about for his name shall be ‖ That is pea●●able Solomon and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days 10 * 2 Sam. 7.13 He shall build an house for my name and he shall be my son and I will be his father and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever 11 Now my son the LORD be with thee and prosper thou and build the house of the LORD thy God as he hath said of thee 12 Onely the LORD give thee wisdom and understanding and give thee charge concerning Israel that thou mayest keep the law of the LORD thy God 13 Then shalt thou prosper if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgements which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel be strong and of good courage dread not nor be dismayed 14 Now behold ‖ Or in my poverty in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of gold and a thousand thousand talents of silver and of brass and iron without * As vers 3. weight for it is in abundance timber also and stone have I prepared and thou mayest add thereto 15 Moreover there are workmen with thee in abundance hewers and ‖ That is masons and carpenters workers of stone and timber and all manner of cunning men for every manner of work 16 Of the gold the silver and the brass and the iron there is no number Arise therefore and be doing and the LORD be with thee 17 ¶ David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son saying 18 Is not the LORD your God with you and hath he not given you rest on every side for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand and the land is subdued before the LORD and before his people 19 Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God arise therefore and build ye the sanctuary of the LORD your God to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD and the holy vessels of God into the house that is to be built to the name of the LORD CHAP. XXXVI 1 The offerings are delivered to the workmen 5 The liberality of the people is restrained 8 The curtains of cherubims 14 The curtains of goats hair 19 The covering of skins 20 The boards with their sockets 31 The bars 35 The vail 37 The hanging for the door THen wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab and every wise-hearted man in whom the LORD put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary according to all that the LORD had commanded 2 And Moses called Bezaleel and Aholiab and every wise-hearted man in whose heart the LORD had put wisdom even every one whose heart stirred him up to come unto the work to do it 3 And they received of Moses all the offering which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary to make it withal And they brought yet unto him free-offerings every morning 4 And all the wise men that wrought all the work of the sanctuary came every man from his work which they made 5 ¶ And they spake unto Moses saying The people bring much more then enough for the service of the work which the LORD commanded to make 6 And Moses gave commandment and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp saying Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary so the people were restrained from bringing 7 For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it and too much 8 ¶ * Chap. 26.3 4. And every wise-hearted man among them that wrought the work of the tabernacle made ten curtains of fine twined
the fat of the peace-offerings 13 The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar it shall never go out 14 ¶ * Ch. 2.1 〈◊〉 15.4 And this is the law of the meat-offering the sons of Aaron shall offer it before the LORD before the altar 15 And he shall take of it his handful of the flour of the meat-offering and of the oyl thereof and all the frankincense which is upon the meat-offering and shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet savour even the * Chap. ● 9 memorial of it unto the LORD 16 And the remainder thereof shall Aaron and his sons eat with unleavened bread shall it be eaten in the holy place in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation they shall eat it 17 It ●●all not be baken with leaven I have given it unto them for their portion of my offerings made by fire it is most holy as is the sin-offering and as the trespass-offering 18 All the males among the children of Aaron shall eat of it It shall be a statute for ever in your generations concerning the offerings of the LORD made by fire * ●xod 1● 37 Every one that toucheth them shall be holy 19 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 20 This is the offering of Aaron and of his sons which they shall offer unto the LORD in the day when he is anointed the tenth part of an * Exod. 16.36 ephah of fine flour for 2 meat-offering perpetual half of it in the morning and half thereof at night 21 In a pan it shall be made with oyl and when it is baken thou shalt bring it in and the baken pieces of the meat-offering shalt thou offer for a sweet savour unto the LORD 22 And the priest of his sons that is anointed in his stead shall offer it It is a statute for ever unto the LORD it shall be wholl● burnt 23 For every meat-offering for the priest shall be wholly burnt it shall not be eaten 24 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 25 Speak unto Aaton and to 〈…〉 saying This is the law of the sin-offering In the place where the burnt-off●ring is killed shall the sin-offering be killed before the LORD it is mo●t holy 26 The priest that off●r●th ●t for sin shall eat it in the holy place shall it be eaten in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation 27 Whatsoever shall touch the flesh thereof shall be holy and when there is sprinkled of the bloud thereof upon any garment thou shalt wash that whereon it was sprinkled in the holy place 28 But the earthen vessel wherein it is sodden * Chap. 11.33 shall be broken and if it be sodden in a brasen pot it shall be both scoured and rinsed in water 29 All the males among the priests shall eat thereof it is most holy 30 * Hebr. 13.11 And no sin-offering whereof any of the bloud is brought into the tabernacle of the congregation to reconcile withal in the holy place shall be eaten it shall be burnt in the fire CHAP. VII 1 The law of the trespass-offering 11 and of the peace-offerings 12 whether it be for a thanksgiving 16 or a vow or a free-will-offering 22 The fat 26 and the bloud are forbidden 28 The priests portion in the peace-off●rings LIkewise this is the law of the trespass-offering it is most holy 2 In the place where they kill the burnt-offering shall they kill the trespass-offering and the bloud thereof shall he sprinkle round about upon the altar 3 And he shall offer of it all the fat thereof the rump and the fat that covereth the inwards 4 And the two kidneys and the fat that is on them which is by the flanks and the caul that is above the liver with the kidneys it shall he take away 5 And the priest shall burn them upon the altar for an offering made by fire unto the LORD it is a trespass-offering 6 Every male among the priests shall eat thereof it shall be eaten in the holy place it is most holy 7 As the sin-offering is so is the trespass-offering there is one law for them the priest that maketh atonement therewith shall have it 8 And the priest that offereth any mans burnt-offering even the priest shall have to himself the skin of the burnt-offering which he hath offered 9 And all the meat-offering that is baken in the oven and all that is dressed in the frying-pan and ‖ Or on the flat plate or slice in the pan shall be the priests that offereth it 10 And every meat-offering mingled with oyl and dry shall all the sons of Aaron have one as much as another 11 And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace-offerings which he shall offer unto the LORD 12 If he offer it for a thanksgiving then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oyl and unleavened wafers anointed with oyl and cakes mingled with oyl of fine flour fryed 13 Besides the cakes he shall offer for his offering leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace-offerings 14 And of it he shall offer one out of the whole oblation for an heave-offering unto the LORD and it shall be the priests that sprinkleth the bloud of the peace-offerings 15 And the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace-offerings for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day that it is offered he shall not leave any of it until the morning 16 But if the sacrifice of his offering be a vow or a voluntary offering it shall be eaten the same day that he offereth his sacrifice and on the morrow also the remainder of it shall be eaten 17 But the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burnt with fire 18 And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace-offerings be eaten at all on the third day it shall not be accepted neither shall it be imputed unto him that offereth it it shall be an abomination and the soul that eateth of it shall bear his iniquity 19 And the flesh that toucheth any unclean thing shall not be eaten it shall be burnt with fire and as for the flesh all that be clean shall eat thereof 20 But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace-offerings that pertain unto the LORD * Chap 15.3 having his uncleanness upon him even that soul shall be cut off from his people 21 Moreover the soul that shall touch any unclean thing as the uncleanness of man or any unclean beast or any abominable unclean thing and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace-offerings which pertain unto the LORD even that soul shall be cut off from his people 22 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 23 Speak unto the children of Israel saying * Chap. 3.17 Ye shall eat no manner fat of ox or of sheep or of goat 24 And the fat of the
unclean for the raw flesh is unclean it is a leprosie 16 Or if the raw flesh turn again and be changed unto white he shall come unto the priest 17 And the priest shall see him and behold if the plague be turned into white then the priest shall pronounce him clean that hath the plague he is clean 18 ¶ The flesh also in which even in the skin thereof was a bile and is healed 19 And in the place of the bile there be a white rising or a bright spot white and somewhat reddish and it be shewed to the priest 20 And if when the priest seeth it behold it be in sight lower then the skin and the hair thereof be turned white the priest shall pronounce him unclean it is a plague of leprosie broken out of the bile 21 But if the priest look on it and behold there be no white hairs therein and if it be not lower then the skin but be somewhat dark then the priest shall shut him up seven days 22 And if it spread much abroad in the skin then the priest shall pronounce him unclean it is a plague 23 But if the bright spot stay in his place and spread not it is a burning bile and the priest shall pronounce him clean 24 ¶ Or if there be any flesh in the skin whereof there is † Heb. a burning of fire a hot burning and the quick flesh that burneth have a white bright spot somewhat reddish or white 25 Then the priest shall look upon it and behold if the hair in the bright spot be turned white and it be in sight deeper then the skin it is a leprosie broken out of the burning wherefore the priest shall pronounce him unclean it is the plague of leprosie 26 But if the priest look on it and behold there be no white hair on the bright spot and it be no lower then the other skin but be somewhat dark then the priest shall shut him up seven days 27 And the priest shall look upon him the seventh day and if it be spread much abroad in the skin then the priest shall pronounce him unclean it is the plague of leprosie 28 And if the bright spot stay in his place and spread not in the skin but it be somewhat dark it is a rising of the burning and the priest shall pronounce him clean for it is an inflammation of the burning 29 ¶ If a man or woman hath a plague upon the head or the beard 30 Then the priest shall see the plague behold if it be in sight deeper then the skin and there be in it a yellow thin hair then the priest shall pronounce him unclean it is a dry scall even a leprosie upon the head or beard 31 And if the priest look on the plague of the scall and behold it be not in sight deeper then the skin that there is no black hair in it then the priest shall shut up him that hath the plague of the scall seven days 32 And in the seventh day the priest shall look on the plague and behold if the scall spread not and there be in it no yellow hair and the scall be not in sight deeper then the skin 33 He shall be shaven but the scall shall be not shave and the priest shall shut up him that hath the scall seven days more 34 And in the seventh day the priest shall look on the scall and behold if the scall be not spread in the skin nor be in sight deeper then the skin then the priest shall pronounce him clean and he shall wash his clothes and be clean 35 But if the scall spread much in the skin after his cleansing 36 Then the priest shall look on him and behold if the scall be spread in the skin the priest shall not seek for yellow hair he is unclean 37 But if the scall be in his sight at a stay and that there is black hair grown up therein the scall is healed he is clean and the priest shall pronounce him clean 38 ¶ If a man also or a woman have in the skin of their flesh bright spots even white bright spots 39 Then the priest shall look and behold if the bright spots in the skin of their flesh be darkish white it is a freckled spot that groweth in the skin he is clean 40 And the man whose † Heb. head is pilled hair is fallen off his head he is bald yet is he clean 41 And he that hath his hair fallen off from the part of his head toward his face he is forehead-bald yet is he clean 42 And if there be in the bald head or bald forehead a white reddish sore it is a leprosie sprung up in his bald head or his bald forehead 43 Then the priest shall look upon it and behold if the rising of the sore be white reddish in his bald head or in his bald forehead as the leprosie appeareth in the skin of the flesh 44 He is a leprous man he is unclean the priest shall pronounce him utterly unclean his plague is in his head 45 And the leper in whom the plague is his clothes shall be rent and his head bare and he shall put a covering upon his upper lip plague of leprosie and shall be shewed unto the priest 50 And the priest shall look upon the plague and shut up it that hath the plague seven days 51 And he shall look on the plague on the seventh day if the plague be spread in the garment either in the warp or in the woof or in a skin or in any work that is made of skin the plague is a fretting leprosie it is unclean 52 He shall therefore burn that garment whether warp or woof in woollen or in linen or any thing of skin wherein the plague is for it is a fretting leprosie it shall be burnt in the fire 53 And if the priest shall look and behold the plague be not spread in the garment either in the warp or in the woof or in any thing of skin 54 Then the priest shall command that they wash the thing wherein the plague is and he shall shut it up seven days more 55 And the priest shall look on the plague after that it is washed

XXII 1 The priests in their uncleanness must abstain from the holy things 6 How they shall be cleansed 10 Who of the priests house may eat of the holy things 17 The sacrifices must be without blemish 26 The age of the sacrifice 29 The law of eating the sacrifice of thanksgiving ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me I am the LORD 3 Say unto them Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations that goeth unto the holy things which the children of Israel hallow unto the LORD having his uncleanness upon him that soul shall be cut off from my presence I am the LORD 4 What man soever of the seed of Aaron is a leper or hath * Chap. 15.2 a † Heb. running of the reins running issue he shall not eat of the holy things until he be clean And whoso toucheth any thing that is unclean by the dead or a man whose seed goeth from him 5 Or whosoever toucheth any creeping thing whereby he may be made unclean or a man of whom he may take uncleanness whatsoever uncleanness he hath 6 The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even and shall not eat of the holy things unless he wash his flesh with water

shall first set forth 10 ¶ On the south-side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur 11 And his host and those that were numbred thereof were fourty and six thousand and five hundred 12 And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Sim●on and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai 13 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and ●ine thousand and three hundred 14 Then the tribe of Gad and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel 15 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty 16 All that were numbred in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty throughout their armies and they shall set forth in the second rank 17 ¶ Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp as they encamp so shall they set forward every man in his place by their standards 18 ¶ On the west-side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud 19 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty thousand and five hundred 20 And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh and the captain of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur 21 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and two thousand and two hundred 22 Then the tribe of Benjamin and the captain of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni 23 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and five thousand and four hundred 24 All that were numbred of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred throughout their armies and they shall go forward in the third rank 25 ¶ The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north-side by their armies and the captain of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai 26 And his host and those that were numbred of them were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred 27 And those that encamp by him shall be the tribe of Asher and the captain of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran 28 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and one thousand and five hundred 29 Then the tribe of Naphtali and the captain of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan 30 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and three thousand and four hundred 31 All they that were numbred in the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred they shall go hindmost with their standards 32 ¶ These are those which were numbred of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers all those that were numbred of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty 33 But the Levites were not numbred among the children of Israel as the LORD commanded Moses 34 And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses so they pitched by their standards and so they set forward every one after their families according to the house of their fathers CHAP. III. 1 The sons of Aaron 5 The Levites are given to the priests for the service of the tabernacle● 11 in stead of the first-born 14 The Levites are numbred by their families 21 The families number and charge of the Gershonites 27 of the Ko●athites 33 of the Merarites 38 The place and charge of Moses and Aaron 40 The first-born are freed by the Levites 44 The overplus are redeemed THese also are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spake with Moses in mount Sinai 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron Nadab the * Exod. 6.23 first-born and Abihu Eleazar and Ithamar 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron the priests which were anointed † Heb. whose hand be filled whom he consecrated to minister in the priests office 4 * Lev. 10.1 Ch. 26.61 1 Chr. 24.2 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai and they had no children and Eleazar and Ithamar ministred in the priests office in the sight of Aaron their father 5 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 6 Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them before Aaron the priest that they may minister unto him 7 And they shall keep his charge and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation to do the service of the tabernacle 8 And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation and the charge of the children of Israel to do the service of the tabernacle 9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel 10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons and they shall wait on their priests office and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 11 ¶ And the LORD spake unte Moses saying 12 And I behold I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel in stead of all the first-born that openeth the matrice among the children of Israel therefore the Levites shall be mine 13 Because all the first-born are mine * Exod. 13.2 Lev. 27.26 Chap. 8.16 Luk. 2.23 for on the day that I smote all the first born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the first-born in Israel both man and beast mine they shall be I am the LORD 14 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai saying 15 Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers by their families every male from a moneth old and upward shalt thou number them 16 And Moses numbred them according to the † Heb. mouth word of the LORD as he was commanded 17 * Gen. 46.11 Exod. 6.16 Ch. 26.57 1 Chro. 6.1 And these were the sons of Levi by their names Gershon and Kohath and Merari 18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families Libni and Shimei 19 And the sons of Kohath by their families Amram and Izehar Hebron and Uzziel 20 And the sons of Merari by their families Mahli and Mushi these are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers 21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family

It is much for you Ye take too much upon you seeing all the congregation are holy everyone of them and the LORD is among them wherefore then lift you up your selves above the congregation of the LORD 4 And when Moses heard it he fell upon his face 5 And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company saying Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his and who is holy and will cause him to come near unto him even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him 6 This do take you censers Korah and all his company 7 And put fire therein and put incense in them before the LORD to morrow and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose he shall be holy ye take too much upon you ye sons of Levi. 8 And Moses said unto Korah Hear I pray you ye sons of Levi 9 Seemeth it but a small thing unto you that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them 10 And he hath brought thee near to him and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee and seek ye the priesthood also 11 For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD and what is Aaron that ye murmure against him 12 ¶ And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab which said We will not come up 13 Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness except thou make thy self altogether a prince over us 14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards wilt thou † Heb. here out put out the eyes of these men we will not come up 15 And Moses was very wroth and said unto the LORD * Gen. 4 4. Respect not thou their offering I have not taken one ass from them neither have I hurt one of them 16 And Moses said unto Korah Be thou and all thy company before the LORD thou and they and Aaron to morrow 17 And take every man his censer and put incense in them and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer two hundred and fifty censers thou also and Aaron each of you his censer 18 And they took every man his censer and put fire in them and said incense thereon and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron 19 And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation 20 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 21 Separate your selves from among this congregation that I may consume them in a moment 22 And they fell upon their faces and said O God the God of the spirits of all flesh shall one man sin and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation 23 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 24 Speak unto the congregation saying Get you up from about the taberlacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram 25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram and the elders of Israel followed him 26 And he spake unto the congregation saying Depart I pray you from the tents of these wicked men and touch nothing of theirs lest ye be consumed in all their sins 27 So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram on every side and Dathan and Abiram came out and stood in the door of their tents and their wives and their sons and their little children 28 And Moses said Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works for I have not done them of mine own minde 29 If these men die † Heb. as every man dieth the common death of all men or if they be visited after the visitation of all men then

that were numbred of them were threescore and four thousand and four hundred 44 ¶ Of the children of Asher after their families of Jimna the family of the Jimnites of Jesui the family of the Jesuites of Beriah the family of the Beriites 45 Of the sons of Beriah of Heber the family of the Heberites of Malchiel the family of the Malchielites 46 And the name of the daughter of Asher was Sarah 47 These are the families of the sons of Asher according to those that were numbred of them who were fifty and three thousand and four hundred 48 Of the sons of Naphtali after their families of Jahzeel the family of the Jahzeelites of Guni the family of the Gunites 49 Of Jezer the family of the Jezerites of Shillem the family of the Shillemites 50 These are the families of Naphtali according to their families and they that were numbred of them were fourty and five thousand and four hundred 51 These were the numbred of the children of Israel six hundred thousand and a thousand seven hundred and thirty 52 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 53 Unto these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names 54 * Ch. 33.54 To many thou shalt † Heb. multiply his inheritance give the more inheritance and to few thou shalt † Heb. diminish his inheritance give the less inheritance to every one shall his inheritance be given according to those that were numbred Baal-peor for all the men that followed Baal-peor the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you 4 But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day 5 Behold I have taught you statutes and judgements even as the LORD my God commanded me that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it 6 Keep therefore and do them for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations which shall hear all these statutes and say Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people 7 For what nation is there so great who hath God so nigh unto them as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for 8 And what nation is there so great that hath statutes and judgements so righteous as all this law which I set before you this day 9 Onely take heed to thy self and keep thy soul diligently lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life but teach them thy sons and thy sons sons 10 Specially the day that thou stoodst before the LORD thy God in Horeb when the LORD said unto me Gather me the people together and I will make them hear my words that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth and that they may teach their children 11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain and the * Ex. 19.18 mountain burnt with fire unto the † Heb. heart midst of heaven with darkness clouds and thick darkness 12 And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire ye heard the voice of the words but saw no similitude † Heb. save a voice onely ye heard a voice 13 And he declared unto you his covenant which he commanded you to perform even ten commandments and he wrote them upon two tables of stone 14 ¶ And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgements that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it 15 Take ye therefore good heed unto your selves for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire 16 Lest ye corrupt your selves and make you a graven image the similitude of any figure the likeness of male or female 17 The likeness of any beast that is on the earth the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air 18 The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth 19 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven and when thou seest the sun and the moon and the stars even all the host of heaven shouldest be driven to worship them and serve them which the LORD thy God hath ‖ Or ●mparted divided unto all nations under the whole heaven 20 But the LORD hath taken you and brought you forth out of the iron furnace even out of Egypt to be unto him a people of inheritance as ye are this day 21 Furthermore the LORD was angry with me for your sakes and sware that I should not go over Jordan and that I should not go in unto that good land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance 22 But I must die in this land I must not go over Jordan but ye shall go over and possess that good land 23 Take heed unto your selves lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God which he made with you and make you a graven image or the likeness of any thing which the LORD thy God hath forhidden thee 24 For * Ch. 9.3 Heb. 12.29 the LORD thy God is a consuming fire even a jealous God 25 ¶ When thou shalt beget children and childrens children and shalt have remained long in the land and shall corrupt your selves and make a graven image or the likeness of any thing and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God to provoke him to anger 26 I call heaven
been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you 25 Thus I sell down before the LORD fourty days and fourty nights as I fell down at the first because the LORD had said he would destroy you 26 I prayed therefore unto the LORD and said O Lord GOD destroy not thy people and thine inheritance which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand 27 Remember thy servants Abraham Isaac and Jacob look not unto the stubbornness of this people nor to their wickedness nor to their sin 28 Lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say * Numb 14.16 Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them and because he hated them he hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness 29 Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance which thou broughtest out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm CHAP. XIII 1 Enticers to idolatry 6 how near soever unto thee 9 are to be stoned to death 12 Idolatrous cities are not to be spared IF there arise among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams and giveth thee a signe or a wonder 2 And the signe or the wonder come to pass whereof he spake unto thee saying Let us go after other gods which thou hast not known and let us serve them 3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams for the LORD your God proveth you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul 4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice and you shall serve him and * Ch. 10.20 cleave unto him 5 And that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death because he hath † Heb. spoken revolt against the LORD spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God which brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of bondage to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in so shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee 6 ¶ If thy brother the son of thy mother or thy son or thy daughter or the wife of thy bosom or thy friend which is as thine own soul entice thee secretly saying Let us go and serve other gods which thou hast not known thou nor thy fathers 7 Namely of the gods of the people which are round about you nigh unto thee or far off from thee from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth 8 Thou shalt not consent unto him nor hearken unto him neither shall thine eye pity him neither shalt thou spare neither shalt thou conceal him 9 But * Chap. 17.7 thou shalt surely kill him thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death and afterwards the hand of all the people 10 And thou shalt stone him with stones that he die because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God which brought thee out of the land of Egypt from the house of † Heb. bond-men bondage 11 And * Ch. 17.13 all Israel shall hear and fear and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you 12 ¶ If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities which the LORD thy God hath given thee to dwell there saying 13 Certain men ‖ Or naughty men the children of Belial are gone out from among you and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city saying Let us go and serve other gods which ye have not known 14 Then shalt thou enquire and make search and ask diligently and behold if it be truth and the thing certain that such abomination is wrought among you 15 Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword destroying it utterly and all that is therein
me and sealed up among my treasures 35 To me belongeth * Ecclus. 28.1 Rom. 12.19 Heb. 10.30 vengeance and recompense their foot shall slide in due time for the day of their calamity is at hand and the things that shall come upon them make haste 36 For the LORD shall judge his people * 2 Mac. 7.6 and repent himself for his servants when he seeth that their † Heb. hand power is gone and there is none shut up or left 37 And he shall say Where are their gods their rock in whom they trusted 38 Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink-offerings let them rise up and help you and be † Heb. an hiding for you your protection 39 See now that I even I am he and there is no god with me * 1 Sam. 2 6. Tobit 13.2 wis 16.13 I kill and I make alive I wound and I heal neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand 40 For I lift up my hand to heaven and say I live for ever 41 If I whet my glittering sword and mine hand take hold on judgement I will render vengeance to mine enemies and will reward them that hate me 42 I will make mine arrows drunk with bloud and my sword shall devour flesh and that with the bloud of the slain and of the captives from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy 43 ‖ Or Praise his people ye nations or Sing ye * Rom. 15.10 Rejoyce O ye nations with his people for he will avenge the bloud of his servants and will render vengeance to his adversaries and will be merciful unto his land and to his people 44 ¶ And Moses came and spake all the words of this song in the ears of the people he and ‖ Or Joshua Hoshea the son of Nun. 45 And Moses made an end of speaking all these words to all Israel 46 And he said unto them * Chap. 6.6 and 11.18 Set your hearts unto all the words which I testifie among you this day which ye shall command your children to observe to do all the words of this law 47 For it is not a vain thing for you because it is your life through this thing ye shall prolong your days in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it 48 * Numb 27.12 And the LORD spake unto Moses that self-same day saying 49 Get thee up into this mountain Abarim unto mount Nebo which is in the land of Moab that is over against Jericho and behold the land of Canaan which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession 50 And die in the mount whither thou goest up and be gathered unto thy people as * Numb 20.25 28. and 33.38 Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor and was gathered unto his people 51 Because * Numb 20.12 13. and 27.14 ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of ‖ Or strife at Kadesh Meribah-Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin because ye sanct●fied me not in the midst of the children of Israel 52 Yet thou shalt see the land before thee but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel CHAP. XXXIII 1 The majesty of God 6 The blessings of the twelve tribes 26 The excellency of Israel ANd this is the blessing wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death 2 And he said the LORD came from Sinai and rose up from Seir unto them he shined forth from mount Paran and he came with ten thousands of saints from his right hand went † Heb a fire of law a fiery law for them 3 Yea he loved the people all his saints are in thy hand and they sat down at thy feet every one shall receive of thy words 4 Moses commanded us a law even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob. 5 And he was king in Jeshurun when the heads of the people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together 6 ¶ Let Reuben live and not die and let not his men be few 7 ¶ And this is the blessing of Judah and he said Hear LORD the voice of Judah and bring him unto his people let his hands be sufficient for him and be thou an help to him from his enemies 8 ¶ And of Levi he said * Exod. 28.30 Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one whom thou didst prove at Massah and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah 9 Who said unto his father and to his mother I have not seen him neither did he acknowledge his brethren nor knew his own children for they have observed thy word and kept thy covenant 10 ‖ Or Let them teach c. They shall teach Jacob thy judgements and Israel thy law ‖ Or let them put incense they shall put incense † Heb. at thy nose before thee and whole burnt sacrifice upon thy altar 11 Bless LORD his substance and accept the work of his hands smite through the loyns of them that rise against him and of them that hate him that they rise not again 12 ¶ And of Benjamin he said The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him and the LORD shall cover him all the day long and he shall dwell between his shoulders 13 ¶ And of Joseph he said * Gen. 49.25 Blessed of the LORD be his land for the precious things of heaven for the dew and for the deep that coucheth beneath 14 And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun and for the precious things † Heb. thrust forth put forth by the † Heb. moons moon 15 And for the chief things of the ancient mountains and for the precious things of the lasting hills 16 And for the precious things of the earth and fulness thereof and for the good will of him that dwelt in the bush let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph and upon the top of the head of him that * Gen. 49.26 was separated from his brethren 17 His glory is like the firstling of his bullock and his horns are like the horns of unicorns with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim and they are the thousands of Manasleh 18 ¶ And of Zebulun he said Rejoyce Zebulun in thy going out and Issachar in thy tents 19 They shall call the people unto the mountain there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness for they shall suck of the abundance of the seas and of treasures hid in the sand 20 ¶ And of Gad he said Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad he dwelleth as a lion and teareth the arm with the crown of the head 21 And he provided the first part for himself because there in a portion of the law-giver was he
the wedge of gold and his sons and his daughters and his oxen and his asses and his sheep and his tent and all that he had and they brought them unto the valley of Achor 25 And Joshua said Why hast thou troubled us the LORD shall trouble thee this day And all Israel stoned him with stones and burned them with fi●● after they had stoned them with stones 26 And they raised over him a great hea● of stones unto this day So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger wherefore the name of that place was called The valley of ‖ That is trouble Achor unto this day CHAP. VIII 1 God encourageth Joshua 3 The stratagem whereby Ai was taken 29 The king thereof is hanged 30 Joshua buildeth an altar 32 writeth the law on stones 33 propoundeth blessings and cursings ANd the LORD said unto Joshua * Deu. 1.21 7.18 Fear not neither be thou dismayed take all the people of war with thee and arise go up to Ai see I have given into thy hand the king of Ai and his people and his city and his land 2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto * Ch. 6.21 Jericho and her king onely * Deu. 2● 14 the spoil thereof and the cattel thereof shall ye take for a prey unto your selves lay thee an ambush for the city behind it 3 ¶ So Joshua arose and all the people of war to go up against Ai and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour and sent them away by night 4 And he commanded them saying Behold ye shall lie in wait against the city even behinde the city go not very far from the city but be ye all ready 5 And I and all the people that are with me will approach unto the city and it shall come to pass when they come out against us as at the first that we will flee before them 6 For they will come out after us till we have † Heb. ●ull●d drawn them from the city for they will say They flee before us as at the first therefore we will f●●e before them 7 Then ye shall rise up from the ambush and seise upon the city for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand 8 And it shall be when ye have taken the city that ye shall set the city on fire according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do See I have commanded you 9 ¶ Joshua therefore sent them forth and they went to lie in ambush and abode between Beth-el and Ai on the west-side of Ai but Joshua lodged that night among the people 10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning and numbred the people and went up he and the elders of Israel before the people to Ai. 11 And all the people even the people of war that were with him went up and drew nigh and came before the city and pitched on the north-side of Ai now there was a valley between them and Ai. 12 And he took about five thousand men and set them to lie in ambush between Beth-el and Ai on the west-side ‖ Or of Ai. of the city 13 And when they had set the people even all the host that was on the north of the city and † Heb. their lying in wait their liers in wait on the west of the city Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley 14 ¶ And it came to pass when the king of Ai saw it that they hasted and rose up early and the men of the city went out against Israel to battel he and all his people at a time appointed before the plain but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behinde the city 15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them and fled by the way of the wilderness 16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them and they pursued after Joshua and were drawn away from the city 17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth-el that went not out after Israel and they left the city open and pursued after Israel 18 And the LORD said unto Joshua Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai for I will give it into thine hand And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city 19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place and they ran assoon as he had stretched out his hand and they entred into the city and took it and hasted and set the city on fire 20 And when the men of Ai looked behinde them they saw and behold the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven and they had no † Heb. hand power to flee this way or that way and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that the smoke of the city ascended then they turned again and slew the men of Ai. 22 And the other issued out of the city against them so they were in the midst of Israel some on this side and some on that side and they smote them so that they * Deut. 7.2 let none of them remain or escape 23 And the king of Ai they took alive and brought him to Joshua 24 And it came to pass when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field in the wilderness wherein they chased them and when they were all ●aln on the edge of the sword until they were consumed that all the Israelites returned unto Ai and smote it with the edge of the sword 25 And so it was that all that fell that day both of men and women were twelve thousand even all the men of Ai. 26 For Joshua drew not his hand back wherewith he stretched out the spear until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. 27 * Num. 31.22.26 Onely the cattel and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves according unto the word of the LORD which he * Vers 2. commanded Joshua 28 And Joshua burnt Ai and made it an heap for ever even a desolation unto this day 29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until even-tide and assoon as the sun was down Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree and cast it at the entring of the gate of the city and * Chap. 7.26 raise thereon a great heap of stones that remaineth unto this day 30 ¶ Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal 31 As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel as it is written in the * Exod. 20.25 Deut. 27.5 book of the law of Moses an altar of whole stones over which no man
had done to Hebron so he did to Debir and to the king thereof as he had done also to Libnah and to her king 40 ¶ So Joshua smote all the countrey of the hills and of the south and of the vale and of the springs and all their kings he left none remaining but utterly destroyed all that breathed as the LORD God of Israel * Deu. 20 16 17. commanded 41 And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Gaza and all the countrey of Goshen even unto Gibeon 42 And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel 43 And Joshua returned and all Israel with him unto the camp to Gilgal CHAP. XI 1 Divers kings overcome at the waters of Merom 10 Hazar is taken and burnt 16 All the countrey taken by Joshua 21 The Anakims cut off ANd it came to pass when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things that he sent to Jobab king of Madon and to the king of Shimron and to the king of Achshaph 2 And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains and of the plains south of Cinneroth and in the valley and in the borders of Dor on the west 3 And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west and to the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Jebusite in the mountains and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh 4 And they went out they and all their hosts with them much people even as the sand that is upon the sea-shore in multitude with horses and chariots very many 5 And when all these kings were † Heb. assembled by appointment met together they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel 6 ¶ And the LORD said unto Joshua Be not afraid because of them for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel thou shalt hough their horses and burn their chariots with fire 7 So Joshua came and all the people of war with him against them by the waters of Merom suddenly and they fell upon them 8 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel who smote them and chased them unto ‖ Or Zidon-ra●bab great Zidon and unto ‖ Or salt-pits † Heb. burnings of waters Misrephothmaim and unto the valley of Mizpeh east-ward and they smote them until they left them none remaining 9 And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him he houghed their horses and burnt their chariots with fire 10 ¶ And Joshua at that time turned back and took Hazor and smote the king thereof with the sword for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms 11 And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword utterly destroying them there was not † Heb. any breath any left to breathe and he burnt Hazor with fire 12 And all the cities of those kings and all the kings of them did Joshua take and smote them with the edge of the sword and he utterly destroyed them * Numb 23.52 Deut. 7.2 and 20.16.17 as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded 13 But as for the cities that stood still † Heb. on their beap in their strength Israel burned none of them save Hazor onely that did Joshua burn 14 And all the spoil of these cities and the cattel the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves but every man they smote with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them neither left they any to breathe 15 ¶ * Exod. 34.11 As the LORD commanded Moses his servant so * Deut. 7.2 did Moses command Joshua and so did Joshua † Heb. be removed nothing he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses 16 So Joshua took all that land the hills and all the south-countrey and all the land of Goshen and the valley and the plain and the mountain of Israel and the valley of the same 17 Even from ‖ Or the smooth mountain the mount Halak that goeth up to Seir even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon and all their kings he took and smote them and slew them 18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings 19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel save * Chap. 2.3 the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon all other they took in battel 20 For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battel that he might destroy them utterly and that they might have no favour but that he might destroy them as the LORD commanded Moses 21 ¶ And at that time came Joshua and cut off the Anakims from the mountains from Hebron from Debir from Anab and from all the mountains of Judah and from all the mountains of Israel Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities 22 There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel onely in Gaza in Gath and in Ashdod there remained 23 So Joshua took the whole land according to all that the LORD said unto Moses and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel * Numb 26.53 according to their divi●ions by their tribes And the land rested from war CHAP. XII 1 The two kings whose countreys Moses took and disposed of 7 The one and thirty kings on the other side Jordan which Joshua smote NOw these are the kings of the land which the children of Israel smote and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising of the sun from the river Arnon unto mount Hermon and all the plain on the east 2 * Numb 21.24 Deut. 3.6 Sihon king of the Amorites who dwelt in Heshbon and ruled from Aroer which is upon the bank of the river Arnon and from the m●ddle of the river and from half Gilead even unto the river Jabbok which is the border of the children of Ammon 3 And from the plain to the sea of Cinneroth on the east and unto the sea of the plain even the salt-sea on the east the way to Beth-jeshimoth and from ‖ Or Teman the south under ‖ Or the springs of Pisrab or the bill * Deu. 3.17 and 4.49 Ashdoth-pisgah 4 And the coast of Og king of Bashan which was of * Deu. 3.11 Ch. 13.12 the remnant of the giants that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei 5 And reigned in mount Hermon and in Salcah and in all Bashan unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites and half Gilead the border of Sihon king of Heshbon 6 Them did Moses the servant of the LORD and the children of Israel smite and * Numb 32.29 Deu. 3.12 Chap. 13.8 Moses the servant of the LORD gave it for a possession unto the Reubenites and Gadites and the half-tribe
dealings by all this people 24 Nay my sons for it is no good report that I hear ye make the LORDS people ‖ Or to cry out to transgress 25 If one man sin against another the judge shall judge him but if a man sin against the LORD who shall intreat for him Notwithstanding they hearkned not unto the voice of their father because the LORD would slay them 26 And the childe Samuel grew on and was in favour both with the LORD and also with men 27 ¶ And there came a man of God unto Eli and said unto him Thus saith the LORD Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father when they were in Egypt in Pharaohs house 28 And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest to offer upon mine altar to burn incense to wear an ephod before me and * Levit. 10.14 did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel 29 Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering which I have commanded in my habitation and honourest thy sons above me to make your selves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people 30 Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith I said indeed that thy house and the house of thy father should walk before me for ever but now the LORD saith Be it far from me for them that honour me I will honour and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed 31 Behold the days come that I will cut off thine arm and the arm of thy fathers house that there shall not be an old man in thine house 32 And thou shalt see ‖ Or the affliction of the tabernacle for all the wealth which God would have given Israel an enemy in my habitation in all the wealth which God shall give Israel and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever 33 And the man of thine whom I shall not cut off from mine altar shall be to consume thine eyes and to grieve thine heart and all the increase of mine house shall die † Heb. men ● in the flower of their age 34 And this shall be a signe unto thee that shall come upon thy two sons on Hophni and Phinehas in one day they shall die both of them 35 And I will raise me up a faithful priest that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my minde and I will build him a fure house and he shall walk before mine Anointed for ever 36 And it shall come to pas● that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread and shall say † Heb. Joyn. Put me I pray thee into ‖ Or somewhat about the priestbood one of the priests offices that I may eat a piece of bread CHAP. III. 1 How the word of the Lord was first revealed to Samuel 11 God telleth Samuel the destruction of Eli's house 15 Samuel though loth telleth Eli the vision 19 Samuel groweth in credit ANd the childe Samuel ministred unto the LORD before Eli and the word of the LORD was precious in those days there was no open vision 2 And it came to pass at that time when Eli was laid down in his place and his eyes began to wax dim that he could not see 3 And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was and Samuel was laid down to sleep 4 That the LORD called Samuel and he answered Here am I. 5 And he ran unto Eli and said Here am I for thou calledst me And he said I called not ●●e down again And he went and lay down 6 And the LORD called yet again Samuel And Samuel arose and went to Eli and said Here am I for thou didst call me And he answered I called not my son lie down again 7 ‖ Or Thus did Samuel before he knew the LORD and before the word of the LORD was revealed unto him Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him 8 And the LORD called Samuel again the third time And he arose and went to Eli and said Here am I for thou didst call me And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the childe 9 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel Go lie down and it shall be if he call thee that thou shalt say Speak LORD for thy servant heareth So Samuel went and lay down in his place 10 And the LORD came and stood and called as at other times Samuel Samuel Then Samuel answered Speak for thy servant heareth 11 ¶ And the LORD said to Samuel Behold I will do a thing in Israel at which both the ears of * 2 Kings 21.12 every one that heareth it shall tingle 12 In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house † Heb. beginning and ending when I begin I will also make an end 13 ‖ Or And I will tell him c. * Chap. 2.29 30 31 c. For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth because his sons made themselves ‖ Or accursed vile and he † Heb. frowned not upon them restrained them not 14 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever 15 ¶ And Samuel lay until the morning and opened the doors of the house of the LORD and Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision 16 Then Eli called Samuel and said Samuel my son And he answered Here am I. 17 And he aid What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee I pray thee hide it not from me God do ●o 〈◊〉 thee and † Heb. so add more also if thou hide any ‖ Or word thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee 18 And Samuel told him † Heb. a●● the thines or wor●s every whit and hid nothing from him And he said It is the LORD let him do what seemeth him good 19 ¶ And Samuel grew and the LORD was with him and did let none of his words fall to the ground 20 And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was ‖ Or faithful established to be a prophet of the LORD 21 And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD CHAP. IV. 1 The Israelites are overcome by the Philistines at Eben-ezer 3 They fetch the ark to the terrour of the Philistines 10 They are smitten again the ark taken Hophm and Phinehas are slain 12 Eli at the news falling backward breaketh his neck 19 Phinebas wise discouraged in her travail with
waters to run down like rivers 17 And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most H●gh in the wilderness 18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust 19 * Numb 11.4 Yea they spake against God they said Can God † Heb. order furnish a table in the wilderness 20 * Ex. 17.6 Numb 20.11 Behold he smote the rock that the waters gushed out and the streams over-flowed can he give bread also can he provide flesh for his people 21 Therefore the LORD heard this and was wroth so a fire was kindled against Jacob and anger also came up against Israel 22 Because they beleeved not in God and trusted not in his salvation 23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above and opened the doors of heaven 24 * Ex. ●6 14. XIX 1Vnder the type of breaking a potters vessel is foreshewed the desolation of the Jews for their sins THus saith the LORD Go and get a potters earthen bottle and take of the ancients of the people and of the ancients of the priests 2 And go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom which is by the entry of † Heb. the sun-gate the east-gate and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee 3. XX. 1 Pashur smiting Jeremiah receiveth a new name and a fearful doom 7 Jeremiah complaineth of contempt 10 of treachery 14 and of his birth NOw Pashur the son of * 1 Chr. 24.14 Immer the priest who was also chief governour in the house of the LORD heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things 2 Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin which was by the house of the LORD 3 And it came to pass on the morrow that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks Then said Jeremiah unto him The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur but ‖ That is Fear
been before me and before thee of old prophesied both against many countreys and against great kingdoms of war and of evil and of pestilence 9 The prophet which prophesieth of peace when the word of the prophet shall come to pass then shall the prophet be known that the LORD hath truly sent him 10 ¶ Then Hananiah the prophet took the * Ch. 27.2 yoke from off the prophet Jeremiahs neck and brake it 11 And Hananiah spake in the presence of all the people saying Thus saith the LORD Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years And the prophet Jeremiah went his way 12 ¶ Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the prophet after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah saying 13 Go and tell Hananiah saying Thus saith the LORD Thou hast broken the yokes of wood but thou shalt make for them yokes of iron 14 For thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and they shall serve him and I have given him the beasts of the field also 15 ¶ Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet Hear now Hananiah The LORD hath not sent thee but thou makest this people to trust in a lie 16 Therefore thus saith the LORD Behold I will cast thee from off the face of the earth this year thou shalt die because thou hast taught * Deu. 12.5 Ch 2● 32 † Heb. ●●v●●t rebellion against the LORD 17 So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh moneth CHAP. XXIX 1 Jeremiah sendeth a letter to the captives in Babylon to be quiet there 8 and not to beleeve the dreams of their prophets 10 and that they shall return with grace after seventy years 15 He foretelleth the destruction of the rest for their disobedience 20 He sheweth the fearful end of Ahab and Zedekiah two lying prophets 24 Shemaiah writeth a letter against Jeremiah 30 Jeremiah rea●eth his doom NOw these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives and to the priests and to the prophets and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon 2 Alter that * 2 Kin. 24.12 c. her saith the LORD 54 A found of a cry cometh from Babylon and great destruction from the land of the Caldeans 55 Because the LORD hath spoiled Babylon and destroyed out of her the great voice when her waves do roar like great waters a noise of their voice is uttered 56 Because the spoiler is come upon her even upon Babylon and her mighty men are taken every one of their bows is broken for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite 57 And I will make drunk her princes and her wise men her captains and her rulers and her mighty men and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake saith the King whose name is the LORD of hosts 58 Thus saith the LORD of hosts ‖ Or The walls of broad Babylon The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly ‖ Or made naked broken and her high gates shall be burnt with fire and the people shall labour in vain and the folk in the fire and they shall be weary 59 ¶ The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah the son of Maaseiah when he went ‖ Or on the behalf of with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign and this Seraiah was a ‖ Or prince of Menucha or chief chamberlain quiet prince 60 So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon even all these words that are written against Babylon 61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah When thou comest to Babylon and shalt see and shalt read all these words 62 Then shalt thou say O LORD thou hast spoken against this place to cut it off that none shall remain in it neither man nor beast but that it shall be † Heb. desolations desolate for ever 63 And it shall be when thou hast made an end of reading this book that thou shalt binde a stone to it cast it into the midst of Euphrates 64 And thou shalt say Thus shall Babylon sink and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her and they shall be weary Thus far are the words of Jeremiah CHAP. LII 1 Zedekiah rebelleth 4 Jerusalem is besieged and taken 8 Zedekiahs sons killed and his own eyes put out 12 Nebuzar-adan burneth and spoileth the city 24 He carrieth away the captives 31 Evil-merodach advanceth Jehoiachin ZEdekiah was * 2 Kin. 24.18 one and twenty year old when he † Heb. reigned began to reign and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah 2 And he did that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD according to all that Jehoiakim had done 3 For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah till he had cast them out from his presence that Zedekiah revelled against the king of Babylon 4 ¶ And it came to pass in the * 2 Kin. 25.1 Ch. 39.1 ninth year of his reign in the the moneth in the tenth day of the moneth that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came he and all his army against Jerusalem and pitched against it and built forts against it round about 5 So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah 6 And in the fourth moneth in the ninth day of the moneth the famine was fore in the city so that there was no bread for the people of the land 7 Then the city was broken up and all the men of war fled and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls which was by the kings garden now the Caldeans were by the city round about and they went by the way of the plain 8 ¶ But the army of the Caldeans pursued after the king and overtook 9 Then they took the king and carried him up unto the king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath where he gave judgement upon him 10 And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah 11 Then he † Heb. blinded put out the eyes of Zedekiah and the king of Babylon bound him in ‖ Or fetters chains and carried him to Babylon and put him in † Heb. house of the wards prison till the day of his death 12 ¶ Now in the fifth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came Nebuzar-adam ‖ Or chief marshal † Heb. chief of the executioners or slaughter-men And so v. ● 14. c. captain of the guard which † Heb. stood before served the king of Babylon into Jerusalem 13 And burnt the house of the LORD and the kings house and all the houses of Jerusalem and all the houses of the great men burnt he with fire 14 And all the army of the Caldeans that were with the captain of the guard brake down all the walls of Jerusalem round about 15 Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive certain of the poor of the people and the residue of the people that remained in the city and those that fell away that fell to the king of Babylon and the rest of the multitude 16 But Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard left certain of the poor of the land for vine-dressers and for husbandmen 17 Also the * Ch. 27.19 pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD and the bases and the brasen sea that was in the house of the LORD the Caldeans brake and carried all the brass of them to Babylon 18 The caldrons also and the ‖ Or instruments to remove the ashes shovels and the snuffers and the ‖ Or basons bowls and the spoons and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministred took they away 19 And the basons and the ‖ Or censers fire-pans and the bowls and the caldrons and the candlesticks and the spoons and the cups that which was of gold in gold and that which was of silver in silver took the captain of the guard away 20 The two pillars one sea and twelve brasen bulls that were under the bases which king Solomon had made in the house of the LORD † Heb. their brass the brass of all these vessels was without weight 21 And concerning the * 1 Kin. 7.15 2 Kin. 25.17 2 Chr. 3.15 pillars the height of one pillar was eighteen cubits and a † Heb. threed fillet of twelve cubits did compass it and the thickness thereof was four singers it was hollow 22 And a chapiter of brass was upon it and the height of one chapiter was five cubits with net-work and pomegranates upon the chapiters round about all of brass the second pillar also and the pomegranates were like unto these 23 And there were ninety and six pomegranates on a side and all the

VIII 1 Many created but few saved 6 He asketh why God destroyeth his own work 26 and prayeth God to look upon the people which onely serve him 41 God answereth that all seed cometh not to good 52 and that glory is prepared for him and such like ANd he answered me saying The most High hath made this world for many but the world to come for few 2 I will tell thee a similitude Esdras As when thou askest the earth it shall say unto thee that it giveth much mold whereof earthen vessels are made but little dust that gold cometh of even so is the course of this present world 3 * Matth. ●0 16 There be many created but few shall be saved 4 So answered I and said Swallow then down O my soul understanding and devour wisdom 5 For thou hast agreed to give ear and art willing to prophesie for thou hast no songer space then onely to live 6 O Lord if thou suffer not thy servant that we may pray before thee and ‖ Or ●●give us thou give us seed unto our heart and culture to our understanding that there may come fruit of it how shall each man live that is corrupt who beareth the place of a man 7 For thou art alone and we all one workmanship of thine hands like as thou hast said 8 For ‖ Or to●● is the ●●dy fashioned when the body is fashioned now in the mothers womb and thou givest it members thy creature is preserved in fire and water and nine moneths doth thy workmanship endure thy creature which is created in her 9 But that which keepeth and is kept shall both be preserved and when the time cometh the womb preserved delivereth up the things that grew in it 10 For thou hast commanded out of the parts of the body that into say out of the breasts milk to be given which is the fruit of the breasts 11 That the thing which is fashioned may be nourished for a time till thou disposest it to thy mercy 12 Thou broughtest it up with thy righteousness and nurturedst it in thy law and refor●●●dst it with thy judgement 13 And thou shalt mortify it as thy creature and quicken it as thy work 14 If therefore thou shalt destroy him which with so great * Job 10.8 Ps 139.14 〈◊〉 labour was fashioned it is an easie thing to be ordained by thy commandment that the thing which was made might he preserved 15 Now therefore Lord I will speak touching man in general thou knowest best but touching thy people for whose sake I am sorry 16 And for thine inheritance for whose cause I mourn and for Israel for whom I am heavy and for Jacob for whose sake I am troubled 17 Therefore will I begin to pray before thee for my self and for them for I see the falls of us that dwell in the land 18 But I have heard the swiftness of the judge which is to come 19 Therefore hear my voice and understand my words and I shall speak before thee this is the beginning of the words of Esdras before he was taken up and I said 20 O Lord thou that dwellest in everlastingness which beholdest from above things in the heaven and in the air 21 Whose throne is inestimable whose glory may not be comprehended before whom the hosts of angels stand with trembling 22 Whose service is conversant in wind and fire whose word is true and sayings constant whose commandment is strong and ordinance fearful 23 Whose look drieth up the depths and indignation maketh the mountains to melt away which
him 〈◊〉 upon Bel. bring him and intreat Bel that he may speak as though he were able to understand 42 Yet they cannot understand this themselves and leave them for they have no ‖ Or sense knowledge 43 The women also with cords about them sitting in the ways burn bran for perfume but if any of them drawn by some that passeth by lie with him she reproacheth her fellow that she was not thought as worthy as her self nor her cord broken 44 Whatsoever is done among them is false how may it then be thought or said that they are gods 45 They are made of carpenters and gold-smiths they can be nothing else then the workman will have them to be 46 And they themselves that made them can never continue long how should then the things that are made of them be gods 47 For they left lies and reproaches to them that come after 48 For when there cometh any war or plague upon them the priests consult with themselves where they may be hidden with them 49 How then cannot men perceive that they be no gods which can neither save themselves from war nor from plague 50 * Ps 115.4 Wisd 13.10 For seeing they be but of wood and overlaid with silver and gold it shall be known hereafter that they are false 51 And it shall manifestly appear to all nations and kings that they are no gods but the works of mens hands and that there is no work of God in them 52 Who then may not know that they are no gods 53 For neither can they set up a king in the land nor give rain unto men 54 Neither can they judge their own cause nor redress a wrong being unable for they are as crows between heaven and earth 55 Whereupon when fire falleth upon the house of gods of wood or laid over with gold or silver their priests will flee away and escape but they themselves shall be burnt asunder like beams 56 Moreover they cannot withstand any king or enemies how can it then be thought or said that they be gods 57 Neither are those gods of wood and laid over with silver or gold able to escape either from theeves or robbers 58 Whos 's gold and silver and garments wherewith they are clothed they that are strong do take and go away withal neither are they able to help themselves 59 Therefore it is better to be a king that sheweth his power or else a profitable vessel in an house which the owner shall have use of then such false gods or to be a door in an house to keep such things safe as be therein then such false gods or a pillar of wood in a palace then such false gods 60 For sun moon and stars being bright and sent to do their offices are obedient 61 In like manner the lightning when it breaketh forth is easie to be seen and ‖ Or the same ●ind after the same manner the wind bloweth in every countrey 62 And when God commandeth the clouds to go over the whole world they do as they are bidden 63 And the fire sent from above to consume hills and woods doeth as it is commanded but these are like unto them neither in shew nor power 64 Wherefore it is neither to be supposed nor said that they are gods seeing they are able neither to judge causes nor to do good unto men 65 Knowing therefore that they are no gods fear them not 66 For they can neither curse nor bless kings 67 Neither can they shew signs in the heavens among the heathen nor shine as the sun nor give light as the moon 68 The beasts are better then they for they can get under a covert and help themselves 69 It is then by no means manifest unto us that they are gods therefore fear them not 70 For as a scar-crow in a garden of cucumbers keepeth nothing so are their gods of wood and laid over with silver and gold 71 And likewise their gods of wood and laid over with silver and gold are like to a whitethorn in an orchard that every bird sitteth upon as also to a dead body that is cast into the dark 72 And you shall know them to be no gods by the ‖ Or purple and brightness bright purple that rotteth upon them and they themselves afterward shall be eaten and shall be a reproach in the countrey 73 Better therefore is the just man that hath none idols for he shall be far from reproach ¶ The song of the three holy children which followeth in the third chapter of DANIEL after this place fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace That which followeth is not in the Hebrew to wit And they walked unto these words Then Nebuchadnezzar verse 24. 2 Azarias his prayer and confession in the flame 24 wherewith the Caldeans about the oven were consumed but the three children within it were not hurt 28 The song of the three children in the oven ANd they walked in the midst of the fire praising God and blessing the Lord. 2 Then Azarias stood up and prayed on this manner and opening his mouth in the midst of the fire said 3 Blessed art thou O Lord God of our fathers thy name is worthy to be praised and glorified for evermore 4 For thou art righteous in all the things that thou hast done to us yea true are all thy works thy ways are right and * Psal ●● 1● all thy judgements truth 5 In all the things which thou hast brought upon us and upon the holy city of our fathers even Jerusalem thou hast executed true judgement for according to truth and judgement didst thou bring all these things upon us because of our sins 6 For we have sinned and committed iniquity departing from thee 7 In all things have we trespassed and not obeyed thy commandments nor kept them neither done as thou hast commanded us that it might go well with us 8 Wherefore all that thou hast brought upon us and every thing that thou hast done to us thou hast done in true judgement 9 And thou didst deliver us into the hands of lawless enemies most hateful forsakers of God and to an unjust king and the most wicked in all the world 10 And now we cannot open our mouths we are become a shame and reproach to thy servants and to them that worship thee 11 Yet deliver us not up wholly for thy names sake neither disanul thou thy covenant 12 And cause not thy mercy to depart from us for thy beloved Abrahams sake for thy servant Isaacs sake and for thy holy Israels sake 13 To whom thou hast spoken and promised That thou wouldest multiply their seed as the stars of heaven and as the sand that lieth upon the sea-shore 14 For we O Lord are become less then any nation and be kept under this day in all the world because of our sins 15 Neither is there at this time prince or prophet or leader Casleu we though it necessary to certifie you thereof that ye also might keep it as the feast of the tabernacles and of the fire which was given us when Neemias offered sacrifice after that he had builded the temple the altar 19 For when our fathers were led into Persia the priests that were then devout took the fire of the altar privily and hid it in a hollow place of a pit without water where they kept it sure so that the place was unknown to all men 20 Now after many years when it pleased God Neemias being sent from the king of Persia did send of the posterity of those priests that had hid it to the fire But when they told us they found no fire but thick water 21 Then commanded he them to draw it up and to bring it and when the sacrifices were laid on Neemias commanded the priests to sprinkle the wood and the things laid thereupon with the water 22 When this was done and the time came that the sun shone which afore was hid in the cloud there was a great fire kindled so that every man marvelled 23 And the priests made a prayer whilest the sacrifice was consuming I say both the priests and all the rest Jonathan beginning and the rest answering thereunto as Neemias did 24 And the prayer was after this manner O Lord Lord God Creatour of all things who art fearful and strong and righteous and merciful and the onely and gracious King 25 The onely giver of all things the onely just almighty and everlasting thou that deliverest Israel from all trouble and didst choose the fathers and sanctifie them 26 Receive the sacrifice for thy whole people Israel and preserve thine own portion and sanctifie it 27 Gather those together that are scattered from us deliver them that serve among the heathen look upon them that are despised and abhorred and let the heathen know that thou art our God 28 Punish them that oppress us and with pride do us wrong 29 Plant thy people again in thy holy place as Moses hath spoken 30 And the Priests sung psalms of thanksgiving 31 Now when the sacrifice was consumed Neemias commanded the water that was left to be poured on the great stones 32 When this was done there was kindled a flame but it was consumed by the light that shined from the altar 33 So when this matter was known it was told the king of Persia that in the place where the priests that were led away had hid the fire there appeared water and that ‖ Or Neemias his company Neemias had purified the sacrifices therewith 34 Then t●● king inclosing the place made it holy after he had tried the matter 35 And the king took many gifts and bestowed thereof on those whom he would gratifie 36 And Neemias called this thing Naphthat which is as much as to say a cleansing but many men call it Nephi CHAP. II. 1 What Jeremy the prophet did 5 How be bid the tabernacle the ark and the altar 13 What Neemias and Judas wrote 20 What fason wrote in five books 25 And how those were abridged by the authour of this book IT is also found in the records that Jeremy the prophet commanded them that were carried away to take of the fire as it hath been signified 2 And how that the prophet having given them the law charged them not to forget the commandments of the Lord and that they should not err in their minds when they see images of silver and gold with their ornaments 3 And with other such speeches exhorted he them that the law should not depart from their hearts 4 It was also contained in the same writing that the prophet being warned of God commanded the tabernacle and the ark to go with him as he went forth into the mountain where Moses climbed up and saw the heritage of God 5 And when Jeremy came thither he found an hollow cave wherein he laid the tabernacle and the ark and the altar of incense and so stopped the door 6 And some of those that followed him came to mark the way but they could not finde it 7 Which when Jeremy perceived he blamed them saying As for that place it shall be unknown until the time that God gather his people again together and receive them unto mercy 8 Then shall the Lord shew them these things and the glory of the Lord shall appear and the cloud also as it was shewed under Moses and as when Solomon delired that the place might be honourably sanctified 9 It was also declared that he being wise offered the sacrifice of dedication and of the finishing of the temple 10 And as when Moses prayed unto the Lord the fire came down from heaven and consumed the sacrifices even so prayed Solomon also and the fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt-offerings 11 And Moses said Because the sin-offering was not to be eaten it was consumed 12 So Solomon kept those eight days 13 The same things also were reported in the writings and commentaries of Neemias and how he founding a library gathered together the acts of the kings and the prophets and of David and the epistles of the kings concerning the holy gifts 14 In like manner also Judas gathered together all those things that were lost by reason of the war we had and they remain with us 15 Wherefore if ye have need thereof send some to fetch them unto you 16 Whereas we then are about to celebrate the purification we have written unto you and ye shall do well if ye keep the same days 17 † Gr. Now God it is that saved all his people and rendred the heritage and the kingdom and the priesthood and the sanctuary as he promised in the law for we hope in God that he will shortly c. We hope also that the God that delivered all his people gave them all an heritage the kingdom and the priesthood the sanctuary 18 As he promised in the law will shortly have mercy upon us and gather us together out of every land under heaven into the holy place for he hath delivered us out of great troubles hath purified the place 19 Now as concerning Judas Maccabeus and his brethren and the purification of the great temple and the dedication of the altar 20 And the wars against Antiochus Epiphanes and Eupator his son 21 And the manifest signs that came from heaven unto those that behaved themselves manfully to their honour for Judaism so that being but a sew they overcame the whole countrey and chased barbarous multitudes 22 And recovered again the temple renowned all the world over and freed the city and upheld the laws which were going down the Lord being gracious unto them with all favour 23 All these things I say being declared by Jason of Cyrene in five books we will assay to abridge in one volume 24 For considering the infinite number and the
given part of the spoils to the ‖ Or loud with ●utures maimed and the widows and orphans the residue they divided among themselves and their servants 29 When this was done and they had made a common supplication they besought the merciful Lord to be reconciled with his servants for ever 30 Moreover of those that were with Timotheus and Bacchides who fought against them they slew above twenty thousand and very easily got high and strong holds and divided amongst themselves many spoils more and made the ‖ Or 〈◊〉 maimed orphans widows yea and the aged also equal in spoils with themselves 31 And when they had gathered their armour together they laid them up all carefully in convenient places and the remnant of the spoils they brought to Jerusalem 32 They slew also Philarches that wicked person who was with Timotheus and had annoyed the Jews many ways 33 Furthermore at such time as they kept the feast for the victory in their countrey they burnt Callisthenes that had set fire upon the holy gates who was fled into a little house and so he received a reward meet for his wickedness 34 As for that most ungracious Nicanor who had brought a thousand merchants to buy the Jews 35 He was through the help of the Lord brought down by them of whom he made least account and putting off his glorious apparel and discharging his company he came like a fugitive servant through the mid-land unto Antioch having very great dishonour for that his host was destroyed 36 Thus he that took upon him to make good to the Romanes their tribute by means of the captives in Jerusalem told abroad that the Jews had God to fight for them and therefore they could not be hurt because they followed the laws that he gave them CHAP. IX 1 Antiochus is chased from Persepolis 5 He is stricken with a sore dis●ase 14 and promiseth to become a Jew 28 He dieth miserably ABout that time came Antiochus ‖ Or ●●●derly with dishonour out of the countrey of Persia 2 For he had entred the city called Persepolis and went about to rob the temple and to hold the city whereupon the multitude running to defend themselves with their weapons put them to flight and so it hapned that Antiochus being put to flight of the inhabitants returned with shame 3 Now when he came to Echatana news was brought him what had hapned unto Nicanor and Timotheus 4 Then swelling with anger he thought to avenge upon the Jews the disgrace done unto him by those that made him flee Therefore commanded he his chariot-man to drive without ceasing and to dispatch the journey the judgement of God now following him For he had spoken proudly in this sort That he would come to Jerusalem and make it a common burying-place of the Jews 5 But the Lord almighty the God of Israel smote him with an incurable and invisible plague for assoon as he had spoken these words a pain of the bowels that was remediless came upon him and sore torments of the inner parts 6 And that most justly for he had tormented other mens bowels with many and strange torments 7 Howbeit he nothing at all ceased from his bragging but still was filled with pride breathing out fire in his rage against the Jews and commanding to haste the journey but it came to pass that he fell down from his chariot carried violently so that having a sore fall all the members of his body were much pained 8 And thus he that a little afore thought he might command the waves of the sea so proud was he beyond the condition of man and weigh the high mountains in a balance was now cast on the ground and carried in an hors-litter shewing forth unto all the manifest power of God 9 So that the worms rose up out of the body of this wicked man and whiles he lived in sorrow and pain his flesh fell away and the filthiness of his smell was noisome to all his army 10 And the man that thought a little afore he could reach to the stars of heaven no man could endure to carry for his intolerable stink 11 Here therefore being plagued he began to leave off his great pride and to come to the knowledge of himself by the scourge of God his pain increasing every moment 12 And when he himself could not abide his own smell he said these words It is meet to be subject unto God and that a man that is mortal should not proudly think of himself as if he were God 13 This wicked person vowed also unto the Lord who now no more would have mercy upon him saying thus 14 That the holy city to the which he was going in haste to lay it even with the ground and to make it a common burying-place he would set at liberty 15 And as touching the Jews whom he had judged not worthy to be so much as buried but to be cast out with their children to be devoured of the fowls and wilde beasts he would make them all equals to the citizens of ‖ Or Antioch Athens 16 And the holy temple which before he had spoiled he would garnish with goodly gifts and restore all the holy vessels with many more and out of his own revenue defray the charges belonging to the sacrifices 17 Yea and that also he would become a Jew himself and go through all the world that was inhabited and declare the power of God 18 But for all this his pains would not cease for the just judgement of God was come upon him therefore dispairing of his health he wrote unto the Jews the letters underwritten containing the form of a supplication after this manner 19 Antiochus king and governour to the good Jews his citizens wisheth much joy health and prosperity 20 If ye and your children fare well and your affairs be to your contentment I give very great thanks to God having my hope in heaven 21 As for me I was weak or else I would have remembred kindly your honour and good will Returning out of Persia and being taken with a grievous disease I thought it necessary to care for the common safety of all 22 Not distrusting mine health but having great hope to escape this sickness 23 But considering that even my father at what time he led an army into the high countreys appointed a successour 24 To the end that if any thing fell out contrary to expectation or if any tidings were brought that were grievous they of the land knowing to whom ‖ Or common affairs the state was left might not be troubled 25 Again considering how that the princes that are borderers and neighbours unto my kingdom wait for oppottunities and expect what shall be the event I have appointed my son Antiochus king whom I often committed and commended unto many of you when I went up into the high provinces to whom I have written as followeth 26 Therefore I pray and request you to
fathers graves 40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites which is forbidden the Jews by * Deut. ●7 7 the law Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain 41 All men therefore praising the Lord the righteous Judge who had opened the things that were hid 42 Betook themselves unto prayer and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance Besides that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain 43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachnies of silver he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering doing therein very well and honestly in that he was mindful of the resurrection 44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead 45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour said up for those that died godly It was an holy and good thought Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead that they might be delivered from sin CHAP. XIII 1 Eupator invadeth Judea 15 Judas by night slayeth many 18 Eupators purpose is defeated 23 He maketh peace with Judas IN the hundred fourty and ninth year it was told Judas that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea 2 And with him Lysias his protectour and ruler of his affairs having either of them a Grecian power of footmen an hundred ten thousand and hors-men five thousand and three hundred and elephants two and twenty and three hundred chariots armed with hooks 3 Menelaus also joyned himself with them and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus not for the safeguard of the countrey but because he thought to have been made governour 4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus minde against this wicked wretch and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea and to put him to death as the manner is in that place 5 Now there was in that place a towre of fifty cubits high full of ashes and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes 6 And whosoever was condemned of sacriledge or had committed any other grievous crime there did all men thrust him unto death 7 Such a death it hapned that wicked man to die not having so much as burial in the earth and that most justly 8 For insomuch as he had committed many sins about the altar whose fire and ashes were holy he received his death in ashes 9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty minde to do far worse to the Jews then had been done in his fathers time 10 Which things when Judas perceived he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day that if ever at any other time he would now also help them being at the point to be put from their law from their countrey and from the holy temple 11 And that he would not suffer the people that ‖ Or bad bad a little respite had even now been but a little refreshed to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations 12 So when they had all done this together and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying flat upon the groud three days long Judas having exhorted them commanded they should be in a readiness 13 And Judas being apart with the elders determined before the kings host should enter into Judea and get the city to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord. 14 So when he had committed all to the ‖ Or Lord. Creatour of the world and exhorted his souldiers to fight manfully even unto death for the laws the temple the city the countrey the common-wealth he camped by Modin 15 And having given the watch-word to them that were about him Victory is of God with the most valiant choice young men he went in into the kings tent by night slew in the camp about four thousand men and the chiefest of the elephants with all that were upon him 16 And at last they filled the camp with sear and tumult and departed with good success 17 This was done in the break of the day because the protection of the Lord did help him 18 Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews he went about to take the holds by policy 19 And marched towards Bethsura which was a strong hold of the Jews but he was put to flight failed and lost of his men 20 For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary 21 But Rhodochus who was in the Jews host disclosed the secrets to the enemies therefore he was sought out and when they had gotten him they put him in prison 22 The king treated with them in Bethsura the second time gave his hand took theirs departed sought with Judas was over come 23 Heard that Philip who was le●t over the affairs in Antioch ‖ Or rebelled was desperately bent confounded intreated the Jews submitted himself and sware to all equal conditions agreed with them and offered sacrifice honoured the temple and dealt kindly with the place 24 And accepted well of Maccabeus made him principal governour from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians 25 Came to Ptolemais the people there were grieved for the covenants for they stormed because they would make their covenants void 26 Lysias went up to the judgment-seat said as much as could be in defence of the cause perswaded pacified made them well affected returned to Antioch Thus it went touching the kings coming departing CHAP. XIV 6 Aleimus accuseth Judas 18 Nicanor maketh peace with Judas 39 He seeketh to take Bazis 46 who to escape his bands killeth himself AFter three years was Judas informed that Demetrius the son of Seleucus having entred by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy 2 Had taken the countrey and killed Antiochus and Lysias his protectour 3 Now one Alcimus who had been high priest and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles seeing that by no means he could save himself nor have any more access to the holy altar 4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year presenting unto him a crown of gold and a palm and also of the boughs which were ‖ Or thought to be of the temple used solemnly in the temple so that day he held his peace 5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprise and being called into counsel by Demetrius and asked how the Jews stood affected and what they intended he answered thereunto
Ex. 12.21 c. he kept the pass-over and the sprinkling of bloud lest he that destroyed the first-born should touch them 29 By faith * Ex. 14.22 they passed through the Red sea as by dry land which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned 30 By faith * Josh 6.20 the walls of Jericho fell down after they were compassed about seven days 31 By faith * Josh 6.23 the harlot Rahab perished not with them ‖ Or that were disobedient that beleeved not when * Josh 2. 〈◊〉 she had received the spies with peace 32 And what shall I more say for the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and of Barak and of Sampson and of Jephthae of David also and Samuel and of the prophets 33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms wrought righteousness obtained promises stopped the mouths of lions 34 Quenched the violence of fire escaped the edge of the sword out of weakness were made strong waxed valiant in fight turned to flight the armies of the aliens 35 Women received their dead raised to life again and others were * 2 Macc 7.7 tortured not accepting deliverance that they might obtain a better resurrection 36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings yea moreover of bonds and imprisonment 37 They were stoned they were sawn asunder were tempted were slain with the sword they wandred about in sheep-skins and goat-skins being destitute afflicted tormented 38 Of whom the world was not worthy they wandred in deserts and in mountains and in dens and caves of the earth 39 And these all having obtained a good report through faith received not the promise 40 God having ‖ Or for seer provided some better thing for us that they without us should not be made perfect CHAP. XII 1 An exhortation to constant faith patience and godliness 22 A commendation of the new testament above the old WHerefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses let us lay aside every weight the sin which doth so easily beset us let us run with patience the race that is set before us 2 Looking unto Jesus the ‖ Or beginner authour and finisher of our faith who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds 4 Ye have not yet resisted unto bloud striving against sin 5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children * Job 5.17 Prov. 3.11 My son despise not thou the chastening of the Lord nor faint when thou art rebuked of him 6 For * Rev. 3.19 whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth 7 If ye endure chastening God dealeth with you as with sons for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not 8 But if ye be without chastisement whereof all are partakers then are ye bastards and not sons 9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us and we gave them reverence shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits and live 10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure but he for our profit that we might be partakers of his holiness 11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous but grievous nevertheless afterward it yeeldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby 12 Wherefore * Isa 35. ● lift up the hands which hang down and the feeble knees 13 And make ‖ Or ev●n strait paths for your feet lest that which is lame be turned out of the way but let it rather be healed 14 * Rom. 12.18 Follow peace with all men and holiness without which no man shall see the Lord 15 Looking diligently lest any man ‖ Or fall from fail of the grace of God lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you thereby many be defiled 16 Lest there be any fornicatour or profane person as Esau * Gen. 25.33 who for one morsel of meat sold his birth right 17 For ye know how that afterward * Gen. 27.28 when he would have inherited the blessing he was rejected for he found no ‖ Or way to change his minde place of repentance though he sought it carefully with tears 18 For ye are not come unto * Exod. 19.12 18 19. the mount that might be touched and that burned with fire nor unto blackness and darkness tempest 19 And the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words which voice they that heard * Exod. 20.19 intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more 20 For they could not endure that which was commanded * Exod. 19.13 And if so much as a beast touch the mountain it shall be stoned or thrust through with a dart 21 And so terrible was the sight that Moses said I exceedingly fear and quake 22 But ye are come unto mount Sion and unto the city of the living God the heavenly Jerusalem to an innumerable company of angels 23 To the general assembly and church of the first-born which are ‖ Or enrolled written in heaven and to God the judge of all and to the spirits of just men made perfect 24 And to Jesus the mediatour of the new ‖ Or testament covenant and to * 1 Pet. 1.2 the bloud of sprinkling that speaketh better things then that of Abel 25 Se that ye refuse not him that speaketh for if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth much more shall not we escape if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven 26 Whos 's voice then shook the earth but now he hath promised saying * Hag. 2.6 Yet once more I shake not the earth onely but also heaven 27 And this word Yet once more signifieth the removing of those things that ‖ Or may be shaken are shaken as of things that are made that those things which cannot be shaken may remain 28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved ‖ Or let us hold fast let us have grace whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear 29 For * Deut. 4.24 9.3 our God is a consuming fire CHAP. 10.2 Chap. 3.4 1 Chr. 24 2. Nadab and Abihu died when they offered strange fire before the LORD 62 And those that were numbred of them were twenty and three thousand all males from a moneth old and upward for they were not numbred among the children of Israel because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel 63 ¶ These are they that were numbred by Moses and Eleazar the priest who numbred the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho 64 But among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest numbred when they numbred the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai 65 For the LORD had said of them They * Ch. 14.28 1 Co. 10.5 ● shall surely die in the wilderness And there was not left a man of them save Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. CHAP. XXVII 1 The daughters of Zelophehad sue for an inheritance 6 The law of inheritances 12 Moses being told of his death sueth for a successour 18 Joshua is appointed to succeed him THen came the daughters of * Ch. 26.33 Josh 17.3 Zelophehad the son of Hepher the son of Gilead the son of Machir the son of Manasseh of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph and these are the names of his daughters Mahlah Noah and Hoglah and Milcah and Tirzah 2 And they stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the princes and all the congregation by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation saying 3 Our father * Ch. 14.35 26.64 65. died in the wilderness and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah but died in his own sin and had no sons 4 Why should the name of our father be † Heb. diminished done away from among his family because he hath no son Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father 5 And Moses brought their cause before the LORD 6 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their fathers brethren and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them 8 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel saying If a man die and have no son then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter 9 And if he have no daughter then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren 10 And if he have no brethren then ye shall give his inheritance unto his fathers brethren 11 And if his father have no brethren then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family and he shall possess it and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgement as the LORD commanded Moses 12 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses * Deut. 32.49 Get thee up into this mount Abarim and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel 13 And when thou hast seen it thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people as * Ch. 20.24 Aaron thy brother was gathered 14 For ye * Ch. 20.24 rebelled against my commandment in the desert of Zin in the strife of the congregation to sanctifie me at the water before their eyes that is the * Ex. 17.7 water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin 15 ¶ And Moses spake unto the LORD saying 16 Let the LORD the God of the spirits of all flesh set a man over the congregation 17 Which may go out before them and which may go in before them and which may lead them out and which may bring them in that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no shepherd 18 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Take thee Joshua the son of Nun a man in whom is the spirit and lay thine hand upon him 19 And set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation and give him a charge in their sight 20 And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient 21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest who shall ask counsel for him * Exod. 28.30 after the judgement of Urim before the LORD at his word shall they go out and at his word they shall come in both he and all the children of Israel with him even all the congregation 22 And Moses did as the LORD commanded him and he took Joshua and set him before Eleazar the priest before all the congregation 23 And he laid his hands upon him and gave him a charge as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses CHAP. XXVIII 1 Offerings are be observed 3 The continual burnt-offering 9 The offering on the sabbath 11 on the new-moons 16 at the pass-over 26 in the day of first-fruits ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 Command the children of Israel and say unto them My offering and my bread for my sacrifices made by fire for † Heb. a savour of my rest a sweet savour unto me shall ye observe to offer unto me in their due season 3 And thou shalt say unto them * Exod. 29.38 This is the offering made by fire which ye shall offer unto the LORD two lambs of the first year without pot † Heb. in a day day by day for a continual burnt-offering 4 The one lamb shalt thou offer in the morning and the other lamb shalt thou offer † Heb. between the two evenines at even 5 And a tenth part of an Ephah of flour for a * Lev. 2.1 meat-offering mingled with the fourth part of an * Ex. 29.40 hin of beaten oyl 6 It is a continual burnt-offering which was ordained in mount Sinai for a sweet savour a sacrifice made by fire unto the LORD 7 And the drink-offering thereof shall be the fourth part of an hin for the one lamb in the holy place shalt thou cause the strong wine to be poured unto the LORD for a drink offering 8 And the other lamb shalt thou offer at even as the meat-offering of the morning and as the drink-offering thereof thou shalt offer it a sacrifice made by fire of a sweet savour unto the LORD 9 ¶ And on the sabbath-day two lambs of the first year without spot and two tenth deals of flour for a meat-offering mingled with oyl and the drink offering thereof 10 This is the burnt offering of every sabbath beside the continual burnt-offering and his drink offering 11 ¶ And in the beginnings of your moneths ye shall offer a burnt-offering unto the LORD two young bullocks and one ram seven lambs of the first year without spot 12 And three tenth deals of flour for a meat-offering mingled with oyl for one
