holy_a spirit_n who_o only_o save_v and_o deliver_v his_o church_n out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o their_o enemy_n and_o procure_v for_o they_o eternal_a salvation_n and_o happiness_n first_o as_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n for_o his_o sake_n and_o merit_n we_o have_v salvation_n and_o all_o other_o benefit_n derive_v unto_o we_o from_o god_n the_o father_n who_o if_o he_o shall_v behold_v we_o that_o he_o will_v save_v they_o by_o himself_o to_o the_o end_n that_o he_o may_v hereby_o signify_v not_o only_o that_o the_o house_n of_o juda_n do_v make_v choice_n of_o he_o the_o true_a god_n who_o they_o worship_v and_o serve_v but_o also_o that_o he_o be_v not_o the_o god_n of_o the_o israelite_n see_v they_o have_v forsake_v he_o and_o betake_v themselves_o to_o the_o worship_n of_o answer_v that_o god_n account_v himself_o to_o be_v no_o god_n unto_o they_o who_o have_v refuse_v he_o and_o that_o they_o have_v in_o truth_n refuse_v he_o whatsoever_o show_n and_o profession_n they_o make_v to_o the_o contrary_a when_o as_o they_o do_v not_o worship_v he_o after_o the_o prescript_n form_n of_o his_o word_n but_o in_o hypocrisy_n and_o in_o idol_n not_o in_o his_o temple_n unto_o which_o place_n he_o have_v limit_v and_o restrain_v his_o public_a worship_n but_o in_o grove_n and_o high_a place_n and_o this_o be_v the_o true_a mean_n whereby_o he_o will_v save_v they_o in_o the_o next_o place_n he_o express_v and_o remoove_v the_o false_a and_o insufficient_a mean_n of_o their_o salvation_n and_o will_v not_o save_v they_o by_o bow_n nor_o by_o sword_n nor_o by_o battle_n by_o horse_n nor_o by_o horseman_n as_o though_o he_o shall_v say_v although_o they_o be_v so_o weak_a poor_a and_o impotent_a as_o that_o they_o may_v appear_v unto_o themselves_o and_o other_o to_o lie_v open_a for_o a_o pray_v to_o their_o enemy_n yet_o this_o shall_v be_v no_o mean_n to_o hinder_v their_o salvation_n and_o deliverance_n see_v my_o purpose_n be_v not_o to_o save_v psal_n 30._o 6._o 8._o the_o consideration_n whereof_o shall_v move_v all_o god_n minister_n according_a to_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o prophet_n in_o this_o place_n wise_o to_o intermix_v commination_n with_o consolation_n judgement_n with_o mercy_n threaten_n with_o promise_n and_o the_o law_n with_o the_o gospel_n that_o they_o may_v keep_v man_n in_o a_o even_a course_n and_o in_o the_o golden_a mean_n neither_o presumptuous_o go_v forward_o in_o sin_n in_o regard_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o benefit_n nor_o desperate_o sink_v under_o the_o weight_n of_o sin_n and_o punishment_n when_o they_o be_v overtake_v of_o god_n judgement_n second_o whereas_o the_o lord_n command_v the_o prophet_n admonition_n that_o god_n minister_n must_v often_o inculcate_v their_o instruction_n and_o admonition_n yet_o again_o to_o put_v the_o people_n in_o mind_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o their_o own_o sin_n and_o unworthiness_n hence_o we_o observe_v that_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o god_n minister_n once_o alone_o to_o stand_v upon_o these_o point_n but_o consider_v how_o forgetful_a man_n be_v of_o god_n benefit_n and_o how_o obdurate_a and_o obstinate_a in_o their_o wicked_a course_n they_o must_v repeat_v &_o beat_v upon_o these_o thing_n again_o and_o again_o never_o think_v any_o duty_n sufficient_o teach_v which_o be_v not_o also_o sufficient_o learn_v neither_o must_v they_o seek_v to_o please_v the_o itch_a ear_n of_o fantastical_a hearer_n who_o be_v impatient_a in_o hear_v the_o same_o thing_n twice_o deliver_v nor_o seek_v to_o delight_v such_o surfeit_v and_o cloy_v appetite_n as_o can_v endure_v often_o than_o once_o to_o taste_v of_o the_o same_o food_n no_o nor_o yet_o take_v pleasure_n though_o variety_n of_o food_n be_v offer_v unto_o they_o if_o it_o be_v bring_v in_o the_o same_o dish_n desire_v only_a variety_n and_o to_o hear_v continual_o new_a matter_n out_o of_o a_o new_a text_n but_o they_o must_v like_v good_a surgeon_n apply_v the_o same_o salve_n to_o the_o same_o sore_n till_o they_o be_v perfect_o cure_v they_o must_v speak_v again_o and_o again_o of_o the_o same_o mercy_n of_o god_n till_o they_o be_v remember_v teach_v the_o same_o doctrine_n till_o they_o be_v learn_v exhort_v to_o the_o same_o duty_n till_o they_o be_v practise_v and_o reprove_v the_o same_o sin_n till_o they_o be_v amend_v and_o like_o good_a householders_n as_o they_o be_v to_o avoid_v the_o glut_n of_o the_o family_n by_o the_o continual_a use_n of_o the_o same_o meat_n so_o also_o they_o must_v often_o than_o once_o set_v before_o they_o that_o spiritual_a food_n which_o they_o know_v be_v good_a and_o wholesome_a and_o think_v it_o no_o disgrace_n and_o disparagement_n to_o their_o plenty_n and_o hospitality_n if_o they_o feed_v twice_o of_o the_o same_o dish_n three_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o the_o lord_n propound_v his_o parable_n the_o use_n of_o parable_n mercy_n and_o the_o people_n sin_n by_o way_n of_o parable_n that_o so_o he_o may_v in_o a_o lively_a manner_n and_o as_o it_o be_v with_o real_a word_n represent_v these_o thing_n to_o their_o understanding_n as_o it_o be_v in_o a_o plain_a picture_n that_o so_o he_o may_v hereby_o more_o effectual_o approve_v his_o own_o undeserued_a goodness_n and_o convince_v they_o of_o their_o unworthines_n and_o this_o form_n as_o it_o be_v always_o delightful_a so_o be_v it_o sometime_o most_o profitable_a as_o when_o god_n minister_n be_v to_o deal_v with_o magistrate_n or_o with_o obstinate_a and_o impudent_a sinner_n who_o will_v not_o know_v nor_o condemn_v sin_n unless_o it_o be_v in_o another_o man_n person_n see_v chap._n 1._o ver._n 2._o four_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o the_o lord_n intend_v to_o affliction_n the_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_v our_o chief_a comfort_n in_o affliction_n arm_v his_o child_n with_o such_o patience_n as_o may_v enable_v they_o to_o bear_v those_o grievous_a affliction_n which_o he_o purpose_v to_o lay_v upon_o they_o do_v in_o the_o first_o place_n assure_v they_o of_o his_o love_n notwithstanding_o he_o severe_o correct_v they_o for_o their_o sin_n yea_o that_o he_o therefore_o do_v chastise_v they_o because_o he_o love_v they_o and_o will_v not_o suffer_v they_o to_o go_v on_o in_o their_o sin_n to_o their_o destruction_n whence_o we_o learn_v that_o to_o attain_v patience_n in_o affliction_n and_o adversity_n the_o best_a way_n be_v earnest_o to_o labour_v that_o we_o may_v discern_v with_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n the_o beam_n of_o god_n love_n and_o favour_n through_o the_o sin_n and_o chasticement_n and_o not_o only_o to_o look_v upon_o the_o rod_n but_o also_o upon_o the_o hand_n of_o our_o love_a father_n who_o beat_v we_o that_o he_o may_v correct_v and_o amend_v us._n for_o if_o we_o be_v persuade_v with_o paul_n that_o affliction_n can_v separate_v we_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n 35._o rom._n 8._o 35._o rom._n 8._o 35._o then_o shall_v we_o also_o with_o paul_n rejoice_v in_o tribulation_n rom._n 5._o 3._o and_o conclude_v with_o job_n that_o though_o he_o kill_v we_o yet_o we_o will_v trust_v in_o he_o job._n 13._o 15._o if_o in_o our_o great_a extremity_n we_o have_v this_o hope_n and_o assurance_n that_o we_o be_v belove_v of_o god_n it_o will_v be_v a_o sure_a anker-hold_a to_o preserve_v we_o from_o make_v shipwreck_n of_o our_o soul_n upon_o the_o sand_n of_o desperation_n though_o we_o be_v toss_v and_o turmoil_v with_o the_o tempest_n of_o tribulation_n and_o the_o surge_a wave_n of_o trouble_n it_o will_v be_v a_o sure_a pillar_n to_o underprop_n our_o faint_a soul_n so_o as_o they_o shall_v not_o ruinous_o sink_v under_o the_o weight_n of_o affliction_n and_o a_o impregnable_a for_o it_o into_o which_o be_v retire_v as_o our_o last_o place_n of_o refuge_n we_o shall_v easy_o bear_v off_o and_o beat_v back_o the_o most_o violent_a battery_n that_o affliction_n and_o adversity_n can_v make_v against_o us._n five_o we_o may_v observe_v how_o heinous_a and_o odious_a this_o sin_n of_o idolatry_n be_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n in_o that_o he_o compare_v it_o to_o idolatry_n the_o heinousness_n of_o idolatry_n adultery_n for_o as_o nothing_o can_v be_v more_o detestable_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o a_o love_a and_o jealous_a husband_n then_o that_o his_o wife_n shall_v affect_v other_o more_o than_o he_o and_o prostitute_v herself_o to_o commit_v whoredom_n even_o in_o his_o sight_n and_o presence_n so_o nothing_o can_v be_v more_o odious_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n then_o that_o his_o church_n shall_v thus_o desile_v herself_o with_o spiritual_a adultery_n even_o in_o his_o presence_n see_v chap._n 1._o ver._n 2._o six_o in_o the_o example_n of_o the_o israelite_n we_o may_v behold_v our_o exceed_a great_a ingratitude_n in_o that_o be_v dear_o belove_v ingratitude_n our_o ingratitude_n of_o god_n we_o do_v not_o love_v he_o again_o but_o be_v ready_a to_o prefer_v idol_n and_o image_n before_o he_o who_o will_v not_o wonder_v at_o the_o unthankfulness_n of_o such_o a_o woman_n who_o be_v base_a and_o beggarly_a deform_a disease_a and_o full_a of_o ill_a quality_n shall_v be_v choose_v and_o espouse_v to_o a_o prince_n of_o great_a worth_n and_o dear_o belove_v of_o he_o if_o notwithstanding_o his_o excellency_n and_o love_n she_o shall_v defile_v her_o marriage_n bed_n and_o prefer_v some_o base_a groom_n before_o he_o but_o such_o be_v our_o ingratitude_n if_o be_v advance_v from_o such_o a_o base_a condition_n to_o such_o high_a dignity_n by_o our_o husband_n jesus_n christ_n we_o set_v our_o mind_n upon_o idol_n more_o than_o on_o he_o seaventh_o we_o may_v here_o observe_v the_o constancy_n of_o love_n the_o constancy_n of_o god_n love_n god_n love_n towards_o his_o elect_a in_o that_o notwithstanding_o their_o grievous_a sin_n and_o great_a unworthines_n he_o continue_v to_o love_v they_o for_o though_o the_o israelit_v after_o they_o be_v espouse_v unto_o god_n commit_v spiritual_a whoredom_n &_o forsake_v the_o lord_n yet_o he_o send_v his_o prophet_n to_o assure_v they_o of_o the_o continuance_n of_o his_o love_n so_o neither_o the_o fall_n of_o our_o first_o parent_n nor_o the_o original_a corruption_n which_o be_v propagate_v from_o they_o unto_o we_o nor_o our_o own_o manifold_a actual_a transgression_n can_v break_v off_o his_o love_n like_a child_n we_o will_v willing_o do_v his_o will_n although_o we_o often_o fail_v of_o our_o desire_n through_o our_o weakness_n and_o imperfection_n eight_o we_o here_o learn_v that_o if_o in_o our_o necessity_n we_o flee_v unto_o idolatry_n affiance_n in_o creature_n be_v idolatry_n the_o creature_n as_o unto_o idol_n image_n saint_n angel_n gold_n and_o riches_n trust_v &_o depend_v upon_o they_o for_o help_v and_o deliverance_n more_o than_o upon_o the_o lord_n we_o may_v true_o be_v say_v with_o the_o israelite_n to_o look_v after_o idol_n &_o to_o commit_v spiritual_a adultery_n with_o they_o for_o that_o we_o make_v our_o god_n upon_o which_o we_o most_o depend_v for_o relief_n in_o time_n of_o want_n &_o for_o protection_n in_o time_n of_o danger_n &_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o not_o only_o those_o who_o worship_v image_n be_v call_v idolater_n but_o also_o the_o covetous_a man_n who_o put_v more_o affiance_n in_o his_o gold_n then_o in_o his_o god_n ephe._n 5._o 5_o 5._o ephe._n 5._o 5._o last_o we_o may_v here_o observe_v that_o with_o contempt_n of_o religion_n companion_n contempt_n of_o religion_n and_o corruption_n of_o manner_n inseparable_a companion_n and_o god_n pure_a worship_n neglect_v of_o honesty_n and_o corruption_n of_o manner_n with_o idolatry_n and_o superstition_n drunkenness_n and_o all_o manner_n of_o voluptuousness_n be_v join_v together_o for_o as_o soon_o as_o man_n look_v after_o idol_n god_n they_o also_o love_v the_o wine_n bottle_n and_o this_o come_v to_o pass_v principal_o through_o god_n just_a judgement_n that_o they_o who_o worship_v the_o creature_n and_o forsake_v the_o creator_n not_o regard_v to_o know_v he_o nor_o his_o truth_n shall_v be_v give_v over_o of_o god_n unto_o vile_a affection_n and_o a_o reprobate_a mind_n whereby_o they_o run_v headlong_o into_o all_o manner_n of_o wickedness_n as_o the_o apostle_n show_v rom._n 1._o 2._o 1_o to_o 31._o 21._o rom._n 1._o 21._o partly_o also_o the_o embrace_n of_o their_o religion_n for_o have_v they_o not_o bring_v even_o into_o the_o service_n of_o god_n whatsoever_o may_v be_v please_v &_o delightful_a to_o the_o sense_n as_o goodly_a
