conscience_n whether_o every_o error_n do_v cut_v a_o man_n off_o from_o god_n answer_v no_o god_n forbid_v but_o this_o we_o can_v speak_v to_o now_o four_o they_o that_o hold_v not_o fast_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n be_v injurious_a to_o their_o posterity_n our_o forefather_n hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n in_o the_o day_n of_o their_o trial_n and_o seal_v it_o with_o their_o blood_n be_v the_o mean_n of_o transmit_v the_o purity_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o we_o their_o posterity_n and_o if_o we_o in_o our_o generation_n hold_v not_o fast_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n but_o carry_v it_o loose_v in_o our_o conscience_n and_o judgement_n and_o we_o let_v it_o fall_v out_o of_o our_o hand_n and_o heart_n we_o forfeit_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n not_o only_o from_o ouâ—_n self_n but_o also_o from_o our_o posterity_n thus_o you_o see_v we_o shall_v wrong_v the_o god_n of_o truth_n and_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n we_o shall_v wrong_v ourselves_o and_o our_o posterity_n if_o we_o hold_v not_o fast_o the_o truth_n we_o have_v receive_v thus_o we_o have_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o doctrine_n application_n for_o application_n here_o first_o i_o may_v bewail_v the_o general_a want_n of_o the_o care_n of_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o duty_n which_o have_v appear_v many_o year_n in_o this_o land_n we_o have_v have_v little_a care_n of_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n we_o have_v receive_v for_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n in_o our_o judgement_n how_o many_o be_v there_o who_o judgement_n have_v be_v pervert_v with_o many_o error_n this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o apostle_n call_v a_o turn_v aside_o to_o another_o gospel_n in_o the_o first_o of_o the_o galathian_o and_o the_o six_o verse_n and_o so_o for_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n in_o the_o love_n of_o it_o how_o many_o be_v there_o that_o have_v fail_v in_o that_o which_o christ_n call_v 〈◊〉_d forsake_v of_o the_o first_o love_n revelation_n the_o secoâ—â—_n and_o the_o four_o verse_n and_o we_o shall_v hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n in_o the_o profession_n of_o it_o and_o how_o many_o be_v there_o that_o have_v fail_v in_o that_o this_o the_o apostle_n call_v in_o the_o ten_o of_o the_o hebrew_n a_o draw_v back_o unto_o perdition_n and_o for_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n in_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o how_o many_o have_v fail_v in_o that_o that_o have_v be_v professor_n and_o now_o be_v grow_v loose_a and_o debauch_a this_o the_o apostle_n peter_n call_v a_o turn_v aside_o from_o the_o holy_a commandment_n all_o these_o thing_n call_v for_o our_o lamentation_n exhortation_n but_o the_o whole_a work_n that_o i_o will_v apply_v myself_o to_o be_v to_o exhort_v every_o one_o of_o you_o to_o the_o care_n of_o this_o duty_n to_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n that_o you_o have_v hear_v and_o receive_v hold_v they_o fast_o in_o your_o judgement_n hold_v they_o fast_o in_o your_o will_n and_o affection_n hold_v they_o fast_o in_o your_o life_n and_o conversation_n hold_v the_o truth_n you_o have_v receive_v constant_o and_o hold_v they_o against_o all_o opposition_n on_o the_o right_a hand_n and_o on_o the_o left_a from_o friend_n and_o foe_n to_o press_v this_o upon_o you_o i_o think_v i_o shall_v need_v use_v no_o other_o motive_n than_o what_o i_o have_v lay_v down_o before_o you_o in_o the_o doctrinal_a part_n only_o this_o one_o thing_n more_o and_o that_o be_v take_v notice_n how_o urgent_a the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v in_o press_v this_o in_o scripture_n now_o say_v m_n â—_o hildersham_n if_o in_o those_o day_n when_o the_o apostle_n be_v yeâ—_n live_v who_o teach_v thâ—_n people_n of_o god_n with_o more_o power_n and_o demonstration_n of_o the_o spirit_n than_o any_o of_o we_o do_v or_o can_v yet_o if_o then_o they_o have_v need_n of_o such_o exhortation_n to_o continue_v in_o the_o doctrine_n and_o to_o abide_v in_o it_o to_o stand_v fast_o and_o hold_v fast_o the_o word_n and_o truth_n of_o god_n how_o much_o more_o needful_a be_v these_o exhortation_n in_o our_o day_n if_o any_o say_v no_o there_o be_v not_o more_o cause_n for_o then_o the_o magistrate_n be_v a_o mortal_a enemy_n to_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o professor_n of_o it_o but_o we_o be_v thanks_o be_v to_o god_n under_o a_o christian_a magistrate_n who_o do_v not_o oppose_v but_o countenance_n the_o gospel_n and_o the_o profeffor_n of_o it_o if_o any_o make_v this_o objection_n i_o will_v give_v you_o mr._n hildersham_n answer_n to_o it_o which_o i_o find_v in_o a_o sermon_n of_o he_o print_v in_o the_o year_n one_o thousand_o six_o hundred_o thirty_o and_o one_o which_o be_v now_o one_o and_o thirty_o year_n ago_o say_v he_o though_o through_o the_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n we_o in_o this_o land_n enjoy_v the_o gospel_n in_o great_a peace_n and_o have_v it_o countenance_v by_o authority_n and_o though_o through_o the_o religious_a disposition_n of_o the_o king_n we_o may_v have_v great_a hope_n of_o the_o continuance_n of_o the_o true_a religion_n and_o seem_v to_o be_v free_v from_o all_o fear_n of_o the_o alter_n of_o it_o yet_o say_v he_o there_o be_v need_n of_o this_o exhortation_n even_o in_o these_o day_n and_o that_o for_o these_o reason_n reas._n i._n first_o because_o of_o the_o great_a danger_n we_o be_v in_o of_o be_v overrun_v or_o overspread_v with_o popery_n and_o the_o fiery_a trial_n before_o we_o be_v aware_a for_o say_v he_o the_o great_a increase_n of_o papist_n that_o we_o daily_o hear_v of_o and_o the_o great_a decline_a of_o many_o who_o be_v ready_a to_o receive_v any_o error_n that_o shall_v be_v offer_v to_o they_o these_o thing_n give_v we_o just_a cause_n to_o fear_v the_o danger_n of_o popery_n overspreading_a we_o and_o brethren_n if_o it_o be_v so_o in_o his_o time_n so_o many_o year_n ago_o what_o be_v it_o now_o reas._n ii_o second_o say_v he_o if_o he_o there_o be_v no_o danger_n oâ—_n popery_n yet_o say_v he_o there_o be_v so_o many_o error_n new_o spring_v up_o that_o do_v show_v how_o needful_a this_o exhortation_n be_v reas._n iii_o three_o say_v he_o there_o be_v such_o a_o general_a decay_n of_o the_o love_n of_o religion_n in_o all_o place_n and_o among_o all_o sort_n of_o people_n and_o so_o much_o irreligiousness_n every_o where_o that_o it_o be_v the_o general_a disease_n of_o the_o nation_n therefore_o he_o conclude_v that_o in_o these_o time_n of_o we_o though_o religion_n have_v the_o magistrate_n to_o countenance_v it_o yet_o there_o be_v as_o much_o need_n of_o press_v this_o exhortation_n as_o ever_o there_o be_v namely_o to_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n that_o we_o have_v hear_v and_o receive_v now_o if_o you_o ask_v what_o you_o shall_v do_v that_o you_o may_v be_v able_a to_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n that_o you_o have_v receive_v i_o will_v give_v you_o some_o direction_n first_o if_o you_o will_v hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n that_o you_o have_v hear_v and_o receive_v get_v into_o christ_n root_v and_o establish_v in_o he_o brethren_n it_o be_v not_o all_o the_o learning_n in_o the_o world_n and_o ability_n that_o man_n can_v have_v that_o will_v enable_v he_o to_o hold_v out_o and_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n that_o he_o have_v receive_v if_o a_o time_n of_o trial_n come_v unless_o christ_n be_v his_o bottom_n and_o foundation_n unless_o christ_n be_v his_o strength_n if_o a_o man_n stand_v upon_o his_o own_o leg_n his_o own_o part_n and_o ability_n to_o argue_v and_o dispute_v and_o repel_v objection_n alas_o these_o thing_n will_v fall_v in_o a_o day_n of_o trial_n prison_n and_o death_n and_o a_o stake_n be_v such_o argument_n brethren_n that_o all_o the_o learning_n and_o part_n in_o the_o world_n can_v answer_v but_o only_o christ_n and_o his_o spirit_n and_o grace_n in_o the_o heart_n therefore_o if_o you_o will_v hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n which_o you_o have_v receive_v and_o hear_v and_o not_o be_v beat_v off_o from_o they_o in_o the_o day_n of_o trial_n get_v into_o christ_n root_v and_o establish_v in_o he_o then_o shall_v you_o stand_v not_o else_o 2._o if_o you_o will_v hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n that_o you_o have_v hear_v and_o receive_v then_o take_v nothing_o upon_o trust_n in_o matter_n of_o religion_n what_o ever_o preacher_n you_o hear_v or_o what_o ever_o book_n you_o read_v take_v not_o thing_n upon_o trust_n but_o examine_v they_o and_o prove_v
when_o death_n &_o affliction_n come_v ionas_n lay_v quiet_o asleep_a till_o the_o storm_n come_v o_o my_o friend_n we_o must_v short_o lie_v a_o die_a the_o lord_n know_v how_o soon_o o_o what_o will_v you_o do_v for_o comfort_n in_o a_o die_a hour_n all_o other_o comfort_n may_v forsake_v you_o &_o before_o that_o time_n you_o may_v meet_v with_o sorrow_n &_o heavy_a affliction_n so_o that_o all_o your_o friend_n in_o the_o world_n will_v not_o do_v you_o good_a your_o friend_n may_v fail_v your_o heart_n may_v fail_v &_o then_o no_o comfort_n but_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n will_v do_v you_o good_a the_o time_n may_v come_v that_o all_o your_o friend_n may_v prâ—â—â—â—_n miserable_a comforter_n when_o god_n come_v to_o 〈◊〉_d with_o the_o soâ—â—_n to_o set_v sin_n to_o be_v change_v upon_o the_o soul_n what_o will_v you_o then_o do_v then_o no_o plaster_n of_o comfort_n will_v stick_v but_o those_o of_o the_o spirit_n lay_v on_o unless_o the_o spirit_n seal_v up_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n the_o love_n of_o god_n to_o the_o soul_n nothing_o will_v be_v quiet_a and_o comfort_v the_o soul_n however_o man_n may_v be_v merry_a for_o a_o time_n yet_o there_o be_v a_o time_n of_o sorrow_n that_o will_v come_v when_o they_o shall_v reflect_v upon_o their_o way_n when_o they_o shall_v see_v nothing_o but_o sin_n behind_o they_o and_o terror_n before_o they_o oh_o what_o amazement_n will_v seize_v upon_o their_o soul_n they_o have_v no_o interest_n in_o god_n in_o christ_n they_o have_v no_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n there_o be_v nothing_o that_o will_v comfort_v you_o unless_o you_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o the_o spirit_n but_o then_o what_o shall_v i_o do_v that_o i_o may_v get_v this_o comfort_a spirit_n into_o my_o soul_n first_o thirst_v earnest_o after_o it_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v to_o those_o that_o thirst_n after_o it_o isa_n 44.3_o thirst_v after_o he_o in_o his_o convincing_n in_o his_o humbling_n in_o his_o sanctify_a mercy_n oh_o let_v the_o desire_n and_o longing_n of_o thy_o soul_n run_v out_o this_o way_n no_o matter_n for_o a_o estate_n no_o matter_n for_o friend_n and_o outward_a comfort_n if_o thou_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n thou_o have_v that_o be_v paramount_n to_o all_o outward_a comfort_n second_o pray_v earnest_o for_o the_o spirit_n you_o be_v not_o so_o willing_a to_o give_v your_o child_n what_o they_o want_v as_o god_n be_v to_o give_v his_o spirit_n to_o they_o that_o ask_v it_o cry_v mighty_o lord_n give_v i_o thy_o spirit_n and_o cry_v to_o the_o spirit_n and_o say_v what_o you_o may_v stand_v in_o need_n of_o though_o a_o saint_n will_v not_o change_v the_o sad_a hour_n of_o his_o life_n for_o the_o sweet_a hour_n in_o his_o former_a condition_n if_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n do_v enjoy_v the_o comfort_n that_o they_o may_v oh_o what_o bless_a life_n may_v they_o live_v but_o they_o be_v so_o full_a of_o trouble_n as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o holy_a
