our_o covetousness_n ezech._n 33.31.32_o and_o so_o we_o be_v just_o confound_v in_o our_o formality_n with_o variety_n of_o evil_a thought_n 4_o or_o else_o we_o take_v not_o notice_n of_o original_a corruption_n but_o rather_o measure_v our_o estate_n by_o actual_a and_o outward_a sin_n and_o so_o we_o be_v pester_v with_o evil_a thought_n either_o to_o convince_v thereof_o or_o to_o draw_v we_o to_o inward_a sincerity_n 5_o or_o we_o stand_v upon_o it_o rather_o to_o do_v thing_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n then_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o almighty_a and_o so_o we_o be_v confound_v with_o sense_n of_o inward_a corruption_n 6_o or_o we_o have_v neglect_v good_a and_o holy_a motion_n and_o thought_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v give_v up_o to_o be_v buffet_v with_o evil_a imagination_n and_o yet_o to_o set_v light_n by_o they_o of_o the_o diverse_a kind_n of_o evil_a thought_n and_o the_o occasion_n of_o they_o our_o thought_n be_v different_a either_o according_a to_o the_o infinite_a variety_n of_o object_n from_o without_o occasion_v they_o or_o from_o the_o insatiable_a fountain_n of_o corruption_n within_o break_v out_o daily_o to_o innumerable_a and_o these_o different_a according_a either_o to_o complexion_n or_o calling_n or_o company_n or_o condition_n outward_a or_o custom_n and_o habit_n of_o life_n etc._n etc._n or_o from_o the_o unquenchable_a malice_n of_o satan_n either_o stir_v up_o natural_a corruption_n or_o force_v nature_n by_o iniect_v of_o violent_a dart_n of_o venomous_a &_o blasphemous_a thought_n so_o that_o to_o determine_v of_o each_o diversity_n be_v infinite_a and_o impossible_a only_o my_o purpose_n be_v to_o touch_v such_o diversity_n of_o thought_n as_o be_v most_o dangerous_a and_o obvious_a to_o the_o saint_n that_o so_o we_o may_v learn_v to_o resist_v and_o subdue_v the_o same_o and_o these_o be_v according_a either_o to_o those_o three_o main_a object_n ordinary_a in_o the_o world_n as_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o â—ye_z occasion_v from_o the_o eye_n receyve_v wanton_a and_o allure_a object_n to_o provoke_v lust_n and_o 2._o the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n desire_v and_o affect_v riches_n and_o mean_n for_o the_o furtherance_n of_o carnal_a pleasure_n and_o delight_n and_o 3._o the_o pride_n of_o life_n honour_n and_o greatness_n to_o countenance_v sin_n to_o make_v it_o our_o happiness_n to_o flatter_v we_o therein_o because_o we_o prosper_v etc._n etc._n or_o according_a to_o the_o two_o general_a condition_n which_o man_n in_o the_o world_n be_v subject_a unto_o namely_o prosperity_n and_o adversity_n the_o one_o whereof_o be_v accompany_v usual_o with_o blasphemous_a and_o atheistical_a thought_n the_o other_o with_o melancholic_a and_o desperate_a thought_n true_o they_o agree_v all_o in_o this_o that_o they_o be_v deceitful_a to_o ourselves_o and_o other_o general_n rule_v concern_v evil_a thought_n both_o for_o the_o discern_a and_o suppress_v of_o they_o 1_o to_o prevent_v all_o good_a motion_n to_o provoke_v to_o continuance_n in_o sin_n 2_o that_o when_o we_o be_v about_o to_o do_v most_o good_a we_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o be_v prevent_v or_o interrupt_v with_o vile_a thought_n 3_o that_o we_o must_v at_o no_o hand_n give_v way_n to_o evil_a thought_n nor_o to_o suffer_v they_o to_o dwell_v upon_o the_o heart_n or_o upon_o any_o object_n lest_o they_o draw_v to_o consent_v and_o so_o to_o action_n of_o sin_n 4_o that_o in_o reject_v evil_a thought_n we_o propound_v a_o contrary_a object_n and_o so_o divert_v the_o thought_n thereupon_o and_o so_o we_o shall_v gracious_o subdue_v the_o same_o 5._o that_o we_o entertain_v the_o very_a first_o motion_n to_o evil_a not_o without_o some_o horror_n and_o tremble_a so_o shall_v presencc_fw-la to_o be_v more_o familiar_a with_o he_o and_o so_o to_o replenish_v our_o mind_n with_o more_o heavenly_a thought_n 3._o yea_o oft_o time_n our_o best_a and_o holy_a action_n as_o they_o can_v be_v without_o so_o it_o please_v god_n in_o his_o wisdom_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v accompany_v with_o wander_a thought_n usual_o sometime_o with_o blasphemous_a &_o overioyous_a injection_n both_o to_o discover_v our_o imperfection_n and_o to_o humble_v we_o under_o his_o mighty_a hand_n as_o also_o to_o provoke_v we_o daily_o to_o hunger_n after_o christ_n and_o so_o â—n_v he_o to_o hasten_v to_o perfection_n as_o hereby_o prevent_v we_o of_o such_o as_o be_v more_o dangerous_a namely_o thought_n of_o pride_n merit_n etc._n etc._n which_o may_v rob_v god_n of_o his_o free_a gift_n of_o god_n it_o argue_v a_o heart_n set_v at_o liberty_n by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n 2_o the_o godly_a esteem_n evil_a thought_n as_o natural_a so_o damnable_a be_v more_o trouble_v with_o they_o then_o outward_a evil_n as_o be_v the_o fountain_n and_o occasion_n of_o all_o sin_n they_o differ_v in_o their_o entertainment_n as_o with_o the_o wicked_a they_o be_v either_o make_v no_o reckon_n of_o because_o so_o ordinary_a as_o they_o suit_n with_o the_o belove_a sin_n so_o they_o be_v more_o welcome_a and_o feed_v on_o as_o the_o chief_a refresh_n of_o the_o mind_n that_o though_o it_o can_v do_v ill_o yet_o herein_o it_o pride_n itself_o that_o it_o can_v think_v thereof_o that_o it_o can_v wish_v opportunity_n and_o ability_n thereunto_o as_o we_o see_v in_o wicked_a old_a folk_n in_o beggar_n they_o can_v think_v evil_a though_o they_o dare_v not_o do_v it_o it_o do_v they_o good_a to_o think_v of_o it_o though_o now_o they_o be_v past_a date_n &c_n &c_n but_o in_o the_o godly_a it_o be_v otherwise_o a_o evil_a thought_n arise_v not_o in_o the_o heart_n but_o the_o heart_n present_o rise_v against_o it_o as_o against_o the_o enemy_n to_o it_o peace_n yea_o she_o make_v out_o against_o it_o present_o by_o prayer_n and_o humiliation_n by_o change_v the_o copy_n to_o a_o contrary_a good_a tho_o and_o so_o by_o a_o after_o watchfulness_n against_o the_o same_o especial_o whereas_o not_o only_o in_o the_o day_n but_o in_o the_o night_n also_o the_o mind_n as_o it_o always_o be_v in_o action_n so_o be_v exercise_v as_o well_o with_o evil_n as_o it_o be_v with_o good_a thought_n we_o may_v now_o observe_v this_o difference_n herein_o between_o the_o hypocrite_n and_o true_a nathaniel_n that_o whatsoever_o evil_a thought_n and_o effect_n thereof_o be_v incident_a to_o the_o night_n these_o be_v if_o not_o for_o the_o present_a judge_v and_o disclaim_v yet_o by_o god_n bless_a spirit_n they_o be_v call_v to_o remembrance_n in_o the_o morning_n or_o upon_o some_o such_o like_a occasion_n in_o the_o day_n and_o so_o seasonable_o reprove_v by_o the_o spirit_n that_o know_v the_o heart_n and_o labour_n to_o purge_v it_o from_o all_o secret_a evil_n and_o so_o the_o conscience_n maintain_v peace_n inward_o with_o god_n and_o so_o thereby_o gain_v more_o fruit_n and_o spiritual_a rest_n hereafter_o but_o with_o the_o hypocrite_n it_o be_v not_o so_o this_o nightly_a thought_n give_v occasion_n to_o attempt_v such_o wickedness_n in_o the_o day_n which_o the_o night_n have_v seem_v to_o deprive_v he_o of_o 2.1.2_o mich._n 2.1.2_o or_o else_o at_o the_o best_a they_o pass_v away_o as_o dream_n without_o use_n and_o profit_n three_o they_o differ_v in_o their_o quality_n as_o that_o howsoever_o the_o saint_n before_o their_o call_n to_o distract_v and_o discourage_v we_o in_o our_o profession_n and_o proceed_n therein_o or_o they_o proceed_v from_o our_o customary_a and_o carnal_a worship_n of_o god_n whereupon_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o have_v make_v a_o real_a idol_n of_o god_n by_o counterfeit_a worship_n no_o maruailâ—_n if_o we_o be_v fcourge_v with_o such_o blasphemous_a thought_n as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o itself_o and_o because_o so_o far_o as_o lie_v in_o we_o we_o have_v make_v he_o no_o better_o unto_o we_o by_o our_o deceitful_a worship_n the_o difference_n of_o they_o we_o shall_v discern_v they_o to_o arise_v from_o natural_a corruption_n by_o these_o mark_v first_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o person_n that_o be_v trouble_v with_o they_o which_o be_v either_o novice_n in_o christ_n ignorant_a for_o the_o most_o part_n of_o heavenly_a mystery_n unexperienced_a in_o the_o power_n of_o sanctification_n and_o such_o usual_o be_v trouble_v with_o the_o tentation_n of_o blasphemy_n to_o puzzle_v and_o stagger_v they_o in_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o so_o to_o hinder_v they_o for_o go_v forward_o in_o grace_n or_o else_o they_o be_v well_o grow_v christian_n and_o so_o hereby_o be_v subject_a to_o spiritual_a pride_n and_o so_o to_o rob_v god_n of_o his_o glory_n be_v therefore_o also_o humble_v with_o such_o terrible_a thought_n to_o make_v they_o the_o more_o sober_a in_o their_o understanding_n to_o prevent_v curious_a search_n expectation_n of_o revelation_n and_o such_o effect_n as_o follow_v thereupon_o or_o else_o through_o inward_a testimony_n of_o joy_n they_o be_v grow_v secure_a and_o so_o be_v awaken_v usual_o with_o such_o horrible_a thought_n or_o they_o fall_v to_o pry_v into_o sublime_a and_o sacred_a mystery_n so_o far_o and_o to_o be_v leave_v to_o such_o tentation_n or_o they_o be_v decay_v and_o so_o decline_v from_o their_o first_o love_n and_o so_o be_v rouse_v up_o and_o set_v upon_o by_o such_o horrible_a thought_n to_o put_v they_o to_o their_o trial_n and_o so_o recover_v they_o again_o or_o in_o their_o fail_n they_o be_v plunge_v into_o sudden_a thought_n of_o despair_n and_o these_o usual_o be_v second_v with_o such_o blasphemous_a thought_n as_o to_o hold_v they_o therein_o by_o satan_n policy_n so_o indeed_o by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n to_o put_v they_o to_o try_v their_o hold_n in_o god_n &_o so_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n without_o feeling_n and_o so_o in_o the_o end_n to_o recover_v feel_v again_o ann_n so_o also_o we_o may_v discern_v these_o tentation_n to_o arise_v from_o nature_n corruption_n by_o such_o occasion_n as_o be_v incident_a to_o god_n child_n for_o either_o it_o please_v god_n to_o shine_v unto_o his_o child_n with_o extraordinary_a comfort_n and_o inward_a joy_n which_o satan_n seek_v to_o turn_v as_o occasion_n to_o the_o flesh_n and_o to_o set_v up_o thereby_o temporal_a happiness_n it_o therefore_o please_v god_n to_o leave_v we_o to_o be_v buffet_v with_o such_o fearful_a thought_n that_o so_o we_o may_v try_v our_o hold_n in_o god_n whether_o we_o love_v he_o better_o than_o these_o comfort_n that_o we_o may_v wait_v upon_o he_o in_o the_o want_n of_o comfort_n and_o be_v provoke_v true_o to_o faint_v after_o eternal_a comfort_n and_o so_o as_o it_o please_v god_n sometime_o to_o give_v unto_o his_o church_n outward_a rest_n because_o it_o be_v nature_n corruption_n to_o build_v tabernacle_n here_o to_o measure_n god_n by_o outward_a prosperity_n as_o if_o he_o only_o be_v know_v herein_o therefore_o herein_o follow_v these_o tentation_n of_o atheism_n and_o blasphemy_n to_o draw_v we_o to_o a_o high_a conceit_n of_o the_o deity_n to_o measure_v
this_o rule_n we_o may_v further_o determine_v of_o the_o uprightness_n of_o our_o heart_n in_o our_o general_a course_n by_o our_o very_a thought_n namely_o by_o the_o entertainment_n or_o disclaim_v of_o they_o but_o still_o it_o will_v be_v reply_v that_o we_o can_v judge_v of_o ourselves_o by_o our_o thought_n because_o we_o can_v discern_v they_o 2_o therefore_o we_o must_v answer_v hereunto_o by_o a_o distinction_n of_o our_o thought_n that_o if_o we_o consider_v our_o thought_n in_o general_a of_o all_o sort_n as_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o discern_v they_o so_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a for_o this_o trial_n because_o this_o only_a belong_v unto_o god_n so_o to_o search_v the_o heart_n and_o discern_v this_o infinite_a variety_n of_o the_o thought_n thereof_o and_o our_o god_n will_v require_v no_o more_o at_o our_o hand_n then_o what_o he_o give_v namely_o so_o far_o to_o discern_v our_o heart_n as_o we_o may_v approve_v ourselves_o unto_o he_o which_o we_o shall_v do_v if_o we_o labour_v to_o keep_v a_o holy_a order_n in_o our_o thought_n that_o they_o may_v intend_v what_o we_o be_v employ_v in_o and_o endeavour_v to_o diminish_v the_o multitude_n and_o distraction_n of_o they_o by_o watch_v against_o evil_a thought_n &_o reject_v they_o and_o cherish_v the_o good_a by_o exercise_v the_o general_a calling_n with_o more_o constancy_n and_o humility_n and_o our_o civil_a calling_n with_o more_o heavenly_a mind_n do_v all_o thing_n as_o in_o god_n presence_n to_o his_o glory_n of_o which_o particular_o before_o and_o last_o if_o we_o do_v not_o wilful_o give_v way_n to_o our_o evil_a thought_n as_o if_o they_o be_v free_a or_o seek_v to_o rebel_v against_o the_o good_a reclaim_v we_o from_o evil_n but_o wise_o labour_v to_o observe_v the_o check_n of_o conscience_n snub_v for_o evil_a and_o so_o to_o prevent_v consent_n and_o act_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o conscionable_o entertain_v all_o good_a and_o holy_a motion_n by_o prayer_n and_o diligent_a actuate_a thereof_o which_o if_o we_o do_v we_o shall_v have_v comfort_n of_o sincerity_n that_o so_o far_o as_o we_o know_v we_o labour_v to_o preserve_v this_o holy_a government_n and_o be_v general_o more_o evil_a than_o good_a more_o upon_o worldly_a then_o heavenly_a thing_n and_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o therefore_o they_o be_v unsanctified_a altogether_o see_v the_o trial_n of_o sanctification_n consist_v not_o in_o the_o multitude_n of_o our_o thought_n either_o way_n incline_v for_o so_o both_o good_a and_o evil_a thought_n be_v sinful_a but_o the_o trial_n arise_v from_o the_o diverse_a entertainment_n of_o they_o that_o though_o as_o they_o arise_v in_o our_o heart_n they_o be_v evil_a without_o consent_n and_o so_o though_o inject_v by_o satan_n yet_o can_v possible_o be_v so_o sever_v from_o corruption_n but_o by_o some_o mixture_n therewith_o they_o will_v prove_v also_o evil_a yet_o if_o we_o shall_v dislike_v of_o they_o and_o by_o prayer_n humble_v ourselves_o before_o the_o lord_n to_o the_o quash_a of_o they_o and_o make_v they_o occasion_n to_o provoke_v we_o to_o heavenly_a motion_n especial_o such_o as_o be_v contrary_a thereunto_o this_o be_v a_o undoubted_a argument_n that_o though_o they_o be_v evil_a yet_o they_o be_v sanctify_v unto_o we_o rom_n 7.20.21_o for_o as_o good_a motion_n reject_v be_v thereby_o to_o we_o unsanctified_a so_o also_o even_o evil_a thought_n repel_v and_o resist_v may_v be_v sanctify_v because_o the_o trial_n of_o sanctification_n be_v not_o from_o the_o motion_n themselves_o or_o their_o object_n but_o from_o the_o power_n of_o the_o regenerate_v will_n either_o entertain_v the_o good_a or_o reject_v the_o evil_a &_o so_o a_o evil_a thought_n be_v subdue_v or_o rectify_v may_v prove_v good_a &_o occasion_n more_o good_a &_o a_o good_a thought_n be_v neglect_v &_o pervert_v may_v be_v evil_a and_o a_o occasion_n also_o of_o much_o more_o evil_a the_o satisfaction_n hereof_o consist_v in_o this_o consideration_n that_o as_o all_o our_o thought_n be_v natural_o evil_a so_o even_o in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n without_o marvelous_a preparation_n and_o watchfulness_n evil_a thought_n will_v either_o go_v along_o with_o or_o else_o begin_v our_o best_a action_n though_o we_o set_v upon_o duty_n which_o in_o themselves_o be_v good_a yet_o usual_o we_o begin_v with_o unprepared_a or_o unsanctified_a thought_n as_o not_o out_o of_o the_o intention_n of_o the_o heart_n not_o as_o in_o god_n presence_n not_o to_o his_o glory_n but_o careless_o as_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n receyve_v the_o word_n as_o the_o word_n of_o man_n pray_v as_o to_o man_n and_o carnal_o for_o vain_a glory_n and_o by_o respect_n so_o that_o indeed_o ordinary_o our_o best_a thought_n in_o god_n service_n be_v not_o only_o not_o good_a in_o these_o respect_n but_o be_v sufficient_a to_o challenge_v the_o whole_a action_n of_o hypocrisy_n and_o therefore_o here_o the_o trial_n be_v not_o so_o much_o how_o we_o begin_v for_o corruption_n likely_a will_v be_v sure_a to_o share_v herein_o and_o so_o to_o serve_v itself_o rather_o then_o god_n but_o let_v we_o consider_v how_o we_o go_v on_o how_o corruption_n be_v master_v and_o grace_n prevayle_v holy_a thought_n grow_v more_o frequent_a and_o seasonable_a enlive_v the_o business_n nay_o principal_o consider_v we_o how_o we_o make_v a_o end_n rather_o be_v humble_v for_o the_o interruption_n and_o exorbitancy_n of_o our_o thought_n and_o so_o acknowledge_v ourselves_o to_o be_v unprofitable_a servant_n than_o any_o whit_n stand_v upon_o the_o worth_n of_o what_o we_o have_v do_v or_o can_v do_v for_o thus_o shall_v we_o give_v god_n the_o glory_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o crown_v his_o own_o work_n and_o so_o interess_v ourselves_o in_o christ_n shall_v be_v accept_v in_o he_o above_o any_o worth_n in_o ourselves_o and_o so_o enable_v by_o he_o to_o further_a constancy_n in_o well_o do_v and_o so_o though_o we_o have_v more_o time_n give_v for_o worldly_a occasion_n and_o therefore_o may_v imagine_v that_o we_o now_o have_v ability_n to_o let_v loose_a our_o thought_n upon_o they_o yet_o see_v no_o creature_n of_o god_n be_v good_a unless_o it_o be_v sanctify_v by_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n therefore_o the_o holy_a heart_n labour_v to_o make_v all_o thing_n pure_a and_o holy_a thereto_o by_o sanctify_v the_o same_o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o a_o wise_a christian_a labour_n to_o be_v a_o law_n unto_o himself_o even_o in_o his_o outward_a liberty_n use_v the_o world_n as_o if_o he_o use_v it_o not_o the_o policy_n of_o satan_n herein_o that_o the_o outward_a practice_n of_o sanctification_n be_v visible_a to_o man_n and_o so_o draw_v to_o a_o affectation_n of_o present_a fruit_n even_o such_o as_o the_o world_n afford_v as_o pleasure_n profit_n credit_n applause_n etc._n etc._n do_v thereby_o withdraw_v from_o the_o inward_a trial_n of_o the_o heart_n before_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o procure_v a_o neglect_n of_o the_o thought_n and_o inward_a motion_n whereby_o we_o shall_v especial_o approve_v ourselves_o unto_o god_n and_o so_o be_v approve_v of_o he_o in_o the_o uprightness_n of_o our_o heart_n which_o see_v it_o be_v a_o main_a occasion_n and_o ground_n of_o hypocrisy_n first_o of_o that_o which_o be_v privy_a when_o we_o think_v ourselves_o better_a than_o we_o be_v because_o we_o measure_v not_o ourselves_o by_o the_o inward_a man_n or_o else_o indeed_o by_o neglect_n of_o our_o own_o thought_n we_o can_v not_o discern_v thereof_o and_o so_o may_v be_v a_o occasion_n of_o gross_a hypocrisy_n even_o to_o make_v show_n of_o that_o which_o we_o will_v not_o be_v as_o be_v that_o in_o show_n which_o we_o be_v not_o in_o thought_n and_o purpose_n therefore_o have_v i_o especial_o labour_v in_o this_o inquisition_n of_o the_o thought_n both_o to_o the_o furtherance_n of_o that_o constant_a and_o sincere_a worship_n of_o god_n as_o also_o for_o the_o purge_n and_o prevent_v of_o all_o privy_a and_o gross_a hypocrsie_n and_o the_o rather_o have_v i_o be_v induce_v hereunto_o because_o that_o as_o yet_o none_o have_v raise_v any_o building_n upon_o this_o foundation_n so_o the_o neglect_n of_o our_o thought_n and_o ignorance_n in_o the_o discern_a of_o the_o holy_a govern_n of_o they_o have_v both_o on_o the_o one_o side_n be_v a_o occasion_n of_o those_o many_o distraction_n and_o desertion_n which_o the_o weak_a christian_n be_v daily_a subject_n unto_o and_o also_o on_o the_o other_o side_n of_o that_o desperate_a profaneness_n and_o licentiousness_n whereunto_o the_o common_a sort_n of_o professor_n be_v give_v over_o in_o these_o evil_a time_n for_o whereas_o the_o truth_n and_o power_n of_o sanctification_n rather_o depend_v god_n faithfulness_n &_o confusion_n of_o all_o it_o hope_n that_o the_o work_v begin_v be_v undo_v &_o abolish_v whereas_o if_o it_o be_v able_a to_o measure_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o work_n begin_v by_o the_o inward_a purpose_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o holy_a temper_n thereof_o as_o it_o shall_v hereby_o be_v satisfy_v in_o regard_n of_o outward_a weakness_n that_o the_o lord_n require_v no_o more_o than_o he_o give_v that_o he_o look_v not_o so_o much_o to_o the_o outward_a man_n as_o to_o the_o hart_n that_o if_o there_o be_v a_o willing_a mind_n he_o accept_v it_o according_a to_o what_o we_o have_v and_o not_o according_a to_o what_o we_o have_v not_o 2._o cor._n 8.12_o so_o may_v this_o also_o full_o settle_v against_o all_o such_o interruption_n and_o decay_n which_o accompany_v all_o our_o proceed_n in_o christ_n for_o whereas_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n begin_v in_o we_o mere_o of_o cod_n mercy_n for_o his_o glory_n must_v so_o be_v lead_v along_o in_o his_o wisdom_n that_o his_o power_n shall_v be_v see_v in_o our_o weakness_n &_o perfect_v in_o our_o infirmity_n that_o he_o may_v have_v the_o only_a glory_n thereof_o therefore_o howsoever_o the_o lord_n his_o fullness_n 3_o and_o because_o satan_n and_o outward_a object_n do_v most_o prevail_v upon_o we_o in_o public_a worship_n if_o now_o we_o shall_v grow_v more_o retire_v in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o shall_v more_o diligent_o exercise_v ourselves_o in_o private_a duty_n of_o prayer_n meditation_n &c_n &c_n find_v more_o liberty_n and_o yet_o restraint_n of_o our_o thought_n thereto_o in_o the_o end_n to_o place_v religion_n in_o the_o sense_n and_o not_o in_o the_o heart_n not_o for_o reformation_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o only_o for_o conformity_n and_o complement_n of_o the_o outward_a and_o that_o to_o suit_n with_o his_o carnal_a end_n of_o pleasure_n &_o profit_n and_o be_v not_o the_o lord_n just_a to_o deal_v with_o he_o according_o though_o he_o give_v he_o his_o desire_n yet_o to_o send_v leanness_n into_o his_o soul_n to_o reward_v he_o for_o the_o present_a with_o such_o as_o he_o measure_v bodily_a comfort_n for_o bodily_a service_n as_o for_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o thought_n affection_n etc._n etc._n these_o may_v run_v riot_n because_o man_n see_v they_o not_o can_v flesh_n and_o blood_n order_v this_o and_o therefore_o they_o must_v have_v their_o swing_n especial_o if_o it_o must_v be_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o pleasure_n herein_o appear_v the_o deceitfulness_n of_o the_o heart_n that_o though_o it_o can_v restrain_v it_o thought_n out_o of_o self_n love_n and_o carnal_a wisdom_n for_o sorrow_n etc._n etc._n yet_o it_o give_v the_o reins_n with_o great_a liberty_n to_o joy_n and_o delight_n these_o be_v the_o colour_n and_o pretence_n that_o thought_n be_v free_a but_o the_o true_a and_o inward_a ground_n of_o this_o atheistical_a and_o damnable_a delusion_n be_v 1_o the_o ignorance_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o the_o enjoy_v more_o secure_o his_o idol_n of_o worldly_a happiness_n but_o for_o a_o general_n and_o special_a watch_n over_o all_o his_o thought_n such_o as_o hinder_v and_o interrupt_v spiritual_a duty_n such_o as_o provoke_v to_o the_o enjoy_n of_o his_o belove_a sin_n such_o as_o tend_v to_o a_o inward_a familiarity_n with_o god_n these_o thing_n as_o he_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o or_o desire_n to_o be_v soothe_v in_o so_o for_o the_o thought_n that_o concern_v each_o particular_a he_o easy_o give_v liberty_n to_o himself_o either_o rest_v in_o the_o outward_a work_n and_o form_n of_o holy_a duty_n &_o never_o regard_v or_o be_v trouble_v with_o such_o inward_a thought_n as_o do_v tend_v to_o make_v he_o spiritual_a therein_o or_o labour_v to_o smother_v &_o dead_a such_o thougâ—â—â—_n as_o any_o way_n across_o his_o darling_n sin_n or_o not_o at_o all_o be_v acquaint_v with_o any_o inward_a familiarity_n with_o god_n in_o meditation_n private_a prayer_n etc._n etc._n he_o esteem_v all_o such_o thought_n no_o better_o than_o tentation_n that_o move_v and_o call_v upon_o he_o thereunto_o 4_o and_o if_o so_o be_v that_o he_o be_v touch_v with_o trouble_a thought_n tend_v to_o bring_v he_o to_o repentance_n these_o also_o he_o esteem_v as_o fit_n of_o melancholy_a tend_v to_o disquiet_v his_o carnal_a peace_n and_o so_o reject_v they_o as_o tentation_n thus_o be_v it_o with_o a_o naughty_a heart_n in_o the_o order_n of_o his_o thought_n for_o heavenly_a thing_n 5_o only_o for_o such_o worldly_a occasion_n â—â—_o as_o tend_v to_o the_o manage_n and_o enjoy_n of_o present_a happiness_n as_o his_o thought_n be_v usual_o and_o indeed_o only_o hereupon_o so_o have_v he_o here_o soâ—â—_n wisdom_n to_o order_n and_o dispose_v of_o they_o to_o their_o several_a occasion_n not_o that_o he_o may_v repress_v &_o subdue_v the_o insatiablenesse_n of_o they_o but_o rather_o that_o by_o his_o politic_a dispose_n of_o they_o to_o their_o several_a occasion_n he_o may_v better_o enlarge_v they_o with_o more_o contentment_n and_o profit_n for_o the_o more_o free_a enjoy_n of_o earthly_a happiness_n 6_o and_o so_o though_o he_o shall_v general_o suppress_v and_o smother_v all_o subordinate_a thought_n tend_v any_o way_n to_o the_o satisfyingâ—_n of_o the_o flesh_n yet_o herein_o be_v his_o deceit_n that_o he_o intend_v only_o the_o curb_v of_o some_o present_a for_o the_o enjoy_n of_o the_o main_a idol_n of_o pleasure_n or_o profit_v which_o he_o aim_v at_o that_o his_o thought_n be_v now_o restrain_v in_o a_o lesser_a evil_n he_o may_v have_v more_o liberty_n to_o prosecute_v his_o darling_n sin_n and_o so_o when_o he_o have_v attain_a his_o desire_n than_o the_o former_a watch_n be_v discharge_v seven_o worse_a spirit_n enter_v in_o liberty_n be_v now_o grant_v to_o all_o looseness_n and_o evilnesse_n of_o thought_n 7_o or_o if_o he_o be_v disappoint_v of_o his_o hope_n and_o cross_v in_o his_o main_a desire_n yet_o here_o be_v his_o comfort_n to_o enlarge_v his_o thought_n therein_o to_o please_v himself_o thereby_o that_o his_o mind_n be_v as_o good_a though_o he_o can_v enjoy_v it_o he_o be_v rich_a in_o thought_n though_o he_o can_v be_v otherwise_o it_o do_v he_o good_a that_o he_o can_v still_o think_v thereon_o this_o give_v he_o hope_n that_o yet_o he_o shall_v prevail_v or_o this_o will_v please_v he_o that_o he_o can_v even_o think_v envious_o and_o disdainful_o of_o other_o that_o have_v attain_a what_o he_o have_v miss_v 8_o may_v we_o not_o observe_v it_o ordinary_a with_o wicked_a man_n that_o though_o they_o be_v out_o of_o date_n concern_v the_o act_n of_o some_o evil_n yet_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o insatiable_a desire_n of_o their_o heart_n it_o be_v a_o main_a comfort_n to_o think_v it_o fare_v with_o the_o wicked_a in_o the_o order_n of_o their_o thought_n general_o we_o shall_v find_v this_o that_o their_o main_a practice_n be_v to_o curb_v and_o extinguish_v by_o all_o mean_n all_o good_a and_o holy_a thought_n but_o to_o give_v rhe_n bridle_v by_o all_o occasion_n to_o vain_a and_o wicked_a imagination_n as_o for_o the_o regenerate_v it_o be_v otherwise_o with_o he_o as_o his_o hart_n be_v settle_v upon_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o a_o better_a life_n so_o be_v all_o his_o thought_n intend_v and_o purpose_v thereunto_o and_o he_o use_v all_o holy_a mean_n to_o nourish_v these_o holy_a thought_n by_o prayer_n meditation_n hear_v and_o read_v the_o word_n and_o he_o avoyd_v careful_o all_o mean_n which_o may_v interrupt_v or_o divert_v the_o same_o as_o idleness_n ill_a company_n wicked_a object_n wander_v of_o his_o sense_n discontent_n 4_o if_o evil_a thought_n be_v raise_v up_o by_o nature_n corruption_n or_o
satan_n iniection_n or_o occasion_v from_o without_o by_o worldly_a object_n herein_o appear_v the_o wisdom_n of_o a_o good_a heart_n first_o not_o to_o give_v way_n unto_o they_o he_o suffer_v not_o his_o hart_n to_o run_v after_o his_o eye_n no_o not_o so_o much_o as_o to_o be_v delight_v with_o it_o to_o be_v ensnare_v with_o the_o pleasure_n thereof_o but_o by_o all_o mean_n seek_v to_o stifle_v the_o thought_n at_o the_o first_o rise_n if_o it_o be_v blasphemous_a and_o terrible_a he_o reason_v not_o with_o it_o but_o reject_v and_o abandon_v it_o with_o all_o detestation_n and_o horror_n by_o prayer_n repentance_n &_o humiliation_n repel_v the_o same_o if_o it_o be_v good_a &_o yet_o not_o seasonable_a as_o interrupt_v in_o prayer_n meditation_n hear_v the_o word_n and_o he_o reject_v it_o likewise_o speedy_o as_o a_o bratte_n of_o satan_n angel-like_o brightness_n and_o so_o continue_v with_o fear_n and_o watchfulness_n in_o his_o intend_a duty_n 5_o as_o for_o the_o at_o the_o ghastly_a appearance_n of_o they_o 7._o especial_o whereas_o satan_n will_v now_o shroud_v himself_o even_o under_o our_o holy_a purpose_n of_o humiliation_n either_o by_o raise_v up_o some_o tickle_a delight_n of_o the_o sin_n which_o we_o labour_v by_o most_o earnest_a and_o sorrowful_a thought_n to_o judge_v in_o our_o self_n or_o else_o mingle_v with_o these_o thought_n of_o sorrow_n melancholy_a passion_n to_o distract_v and_o divert_v they_o from_o the_o true_a end_n or_o else_o to_o eat_v out_o this_o flourish_a gourd_n of_o our_o most_o intentive_a &_o humble_a thought_n with_o some_o worm_n of_o spiritual_a pride_n desert_n etc._n etc._n have_v not_o the_o holy_a heart_n need_v to_o keep_v a_o special_a watch_n herein_o do_v it_o not_o wise_o suspect_v itself_o in_o regard_n of_o these_o dead_a fly_n that_o be_v like_a to_o corrupt_v the_o most_o precious_a ointment_n and_o to_o deprive_v it_o of_o the_o comfort_n of_o all_o sound_a humiliation_n though_o not_o entice_v it_o again_o unto_o the_o same_o sin_n yet_o change_v it_o hereby_o into_o a_o more_o grievous_a and_o dangerous_a evil_n another_o point_n of_o this_o heavenly_a wisdom_n in_o watch_v over_o the_o thought_n ordinary_a to_o the_o elect_a where_o in_o he_o exceed_v the_o unregenerate_a be_v a_o wise_a single_v out_o and_o encounter_v of_o they_o as_o whereas_o there_o be_v no_o child_n of_o god_n but_o be_v subject_a to_o one_o sin_n above_o another_o therefore_o it_o be_v his_o especial_a care_n to_o curb_v his_o thought_n concern_v it_o though_o he_o neglect_v not_o any_o other_o yet_o principal_o he_o attend_v such_o thought_n as_o tend_v this_o way_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o as_o it_o usual_o fall_v out_o that_o as_o he_o shall_v find_v himself_o defective_a break_v of_o to_o company_n music_n so_o far_o be_v he_o from_o cherish_v and_o entertain_v the_o same_o above_o all_o he_o can_v endure_v if_o it_o may_v be_v to_o wake_v in_o the_o night_n alone_o it_o be_v his_o wisdom_n to_o drown_v his_o head_n to_o bedward_o that_o he_o may_v lie_v in_o his_o bed_n like_o a_o stone_n if_o he_o awake_v his_o next_o work_n be_v to_o toss_v and_o tumble_v his_o body_n that_o so_o the_o mind_n may_v not_o settle_v to_o any_o holy_a meditation_n if_o he_o dream_v of_o temporal_a good_a it_o grieve_v he_o that_o he_o have_v it_o not_o if_o he_o dream_v of_o evil_n it_o scare_n he_o to_o report_v of_o it_o once_o it_o be_v that_o he_o seldom_o or_o never_o dream_v of_o heavenly_a thing_n or_o if_o he_o do_v he_o account_v it_o as_o a_o dream_n and_o so_o it_o vanish_v especial_o we_o shall_v find_v this_o proper_a to_o the_o saint_n to_o be_v wise_a in_o entertain_v the_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n observe_v the_o check_n of_o conscience_n and_o furnish_v the_o mind_n with_o holy_a meditation_n rejoice_v exceed_o in_o the_o now_o plentiful_a tender_a and_o gracious_a success_n thereof_o and_o grieve_v exceed_o either_o at_o any_o contrary_a motion_n or_o at_o the_o neglect_n &_o disappointment_n of_o good_a motion_n he_o know_v that_o by_o neglect_v such_o he_o may_v grieve_v the_o spirit_n &_o so_o grow_v to_o a_o quench_n of_o the_o same_o and_o thereby_o be_v draw_v to_o despite_n the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n if_o not_o direct_o &_o by_o profession_n yet_o indirect_o and_o by_o a_o carnal_a opposition_n in_o slander_v answerable_a to_o our_o curious_a and_o presumptuous_a spirit_n desirous_a to_o pry_v into_o hide_a mystery_n and_o to_o rove_v after_o dream_n and_o revelation_n to_o confound_v our_o vain_a trust_n and_o confidence_n therein_o 6_o for_o the_o most_o part_n they_o be_v carnal_a and_o full_a of_o worldliness_n according_a to_o the_o common_a aim_n of_o profession_n which_o be_v currant_n in_o the_o world_n namely_o for_o profit_n pleasure_n etc._n etc._n as_o just_o convince_a our_o want_n of_o preparation_n and_o intention_n thereto_o and_o arise_v either_o from_o our_o own_o unstable_a heart_n or_o satan_n malice_n to_o divert_v we_o from_o what_o we_o have_v in_o hand_n 8_o and_o so_o according_a to_o our_o ignorance_n or_o unsettled_a judgement_n in_o the_o matter_n &_o manner_n of_o divine_a worship_n they_o be_v full_a of_o uncertainty_n and_o wander_n full_a of_o fear_n distraction_n and_o inconstancy_n the_o effect_n of_o these_o kind_n of_o thought_n be_v at_o the_o best_a they_o interrupt_v the_o intention_n of_o the_o heart_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o so_o hinder_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o power_n thereof_o and_o deprive_v the_o conscience_n of_o much_o comfort_n of_o the_o same_o but_o if_o they_o be_v in_o any_o sort_n give_v way_n unto_o they_o may_v prove_v occasion_n of_o prophanesse_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o secret_a atheism_n and_o also_o of_o hypocrisy_n and_o carnal_a worship_n yea_o if_o they_o be_v not_o speedy_o qualify_v &_o suppress_v they_o may_v be_v occasion_n by_o it_o ckle_v the_o affection_n and_o procure_v consent_n thereto_o to_o break_v out_o into_o gross_a evil_n to_o the_o reproach_n of_o profession_n and_o wound_v of_o the_o conscience_n nay_o do_v it_o not_o fall_v out_o that_o when_o as_o these_o vain_a and_o wander_a thought_n accompany_v we_o in_o divine_a worship_n occasion_v from_o our_o want_n of_o preparation_n thereto_o and_o conscience_n thereof_o to_o make_v we_o more_o holy_a &_o careful_a therein_o yet_o by_o these_o thought_n we_o may_v oft_o time_n measure_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o so_o grow_v either_o to_o conceive_v base_o thereof_o and_o thereby_o holiness_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v more_o ready_a and_o spiritual_a when_o we_o come_v to_o set_v duty_n especial_o labour_n we_o daily_o to_o renew_v our_o repentance_n daily_o for_o all_o know_a sin_n that_o so_o we_o may_v more_o bold_o appear_v before_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o worship_n and_o may_v more_o free_o and_o entire_o converse_v with_o he_o therein_o because_o sin_v unrepented_a of_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o haunt_v and_o interrupt_v we_o when_o we_o be_v about_o to_o do_v most_o good_a as_o to_o defile_v the_o same_o so_o in_o the_o wise_a mercy_n of_o god_n to_o provoke_v we_o to_o the_o clear_n of_o the_o score_n lest_o if_o we_o regard_v iniquity_n in_o our_o heart_n the_o lord_n will_v not_o hear_v our_o prayer_n psal_n 66.18_o and_o therefore_o as_o we_o be_v to_o begin_v all_o holy_a exercise_n with_o confession_n and_o deprecation_n for_o our_o sin_n especial_o such_o particular_a as_o lie_v upon_o we_o that_o so_o they_o may_v not_o fly_v in_o our_o face_n when_o we_o seek_v the_o face_n of_o god_n in_o his_o worship_n so_o if_o we_o conclude_v all_o holy_a duty_n with_o confession_n of_o our_o fayling_n therein_o especial_o of_o the_o vanity_n of_o our_o mind_n and_o wander_v of_o our_o affection_n we_o shall_v hereby_o be_v better_o store_v with_o holy_a thought_n and_o affection_n therein_o and_o less_o interrupt_v with_o the_o contrary_n to_o this_o end_n it_o be_v now_o fit_a also_o that_o we_o make_v a_o covenant_n with_o our_o outward_a man_n with_o our_o eye_n ear_n &_o heart_n that_o so_o in_o the_o worshippt_v of_o god_n
licentiousness_n but_o hereby_o also_o conclude_v that_o thought_n be_v free_a because_o it_o have_v no_o touch_n or_o remorse_n of_o they_o and_o herein_o the_o policy_n of_o satan_n be_v notorious_a who_o as_o by_o this_o mean_v he_o keep_v they_o in_o desperate_a impenitency_n so_o by_o plunge_v they_o hereby_o into_o all_o excess_n of_o riot_n as_o nourish_v by_o this_o mean_v that_o root_n of_o bitterness_n in_o their_o heart_n that_o god_n see_v not_o it_o boot_v not_o to_o fear_v such_o bugbears_a he_o thereby_o lead_v they_o at_o his_o pleasure_n to_o make_v up_o the_o measure_n of_o sin_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v overtake_v with_o unavoidable_a vengeance_n above_o all_o the_o justice_n &_o wisdom_n of_o god_n be_v admirable_a herein_o who_o purpose_v to_o take_v the_o wise_a in_o their_o own_o craftiness_n do_v hereby_o most_o righteous_o accomplish_v the_o same_o even_o by_o catch_v they_o in_o their_o own_o delusion_n that_o thought_n be_v free_a for_o as_o hereby_o they_o up_o to_o their_o own_o conceit_n that_o by_o this_o conceit_a liberty_n of_o their_o thought_n they_o may_v be_v nourish_v in_o their_o damnable_a ignorance_n and_o denial_n of_o his_o power_n and_o presence_n and_o so_o be_v deceive_v with_o the_o outward_a estimate_n and_o form_n of_o religion_n among_o man_n they_o may_v worship_v the_o creature_n by_o advance_v their_o own_o fancy_n above_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o be_v just_o give_v up_o to_o a_o reprobate_a sense_n even_o to_o do_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o convenient_a be_v fill_v with_o all_o wickedness_n and_o gross_a impiety_n and_o so_o ripen_v and_o fat_v up_o thereby_o themselves_o unto_o the_o day_n of_o slaughter_n last_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o deceitfulness_n of_o the_o heart_n this_o as_o it_o be_v in_o his_o great_a wisdom_n enmity_n against_o god_n so_o it_o appear_v in_o nothing_o more_o than_o in_o this_o deceit_n of_o the_o liberty_n of_o thought_n be_v in_o nothing_o more_o deceive_v then_o herein_o for_o though_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n it_o be_v convince_v that_o thought_n be_v not_o free_a because_o they_o do_v either_o excuse_n for_o good_a or_o accuse_v for_o evil_n yet_o to_o the_o further_o deceive_v of_o itself_o herein_o it_o most_o dangerous_o pervert_v the_o light_n of_o grace_n which_o though_o it_o be_v a_o searcher_n of_o the_o thought_n and_o the_o just_a convincer_n of_o they_o yet_o because_o withal_o it_o grant_v some_o privilege_n to_o such_o as_o be_v in_o christ_n that_o if_o there_o be_v a_o willing_a mind_n to_o some_o good_a &_o not_o consent_v to_o sin_n it_o shall_v not_o be_v impute_v unto_o we_o hereupon_o they_o false_o conclude_v that_o though_o they_o have_v world_n of_o evil_a thought_n yet_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v impute_v to_o they_o because_o they_o do_v not_o consent_v to_o and_o approve_v the_o same_o wherein_o their_o lie_n a_o double_a deceit_n one_o that_o they_o think_v their_o thought_n to_o be_v free_a because_o they_o be_v not_o impute_v whereas_o they_o may_v be_v sinful_a though_o not_o impute_v nay_o in_o that_o they_o be_v not_o impute_v therefore_o they_o be_v sinful_a but_o the_o difference_n between_o these_o two_o that_o resistance_n of_o will_n arise_v from_o a_o distinct_a knowledge_n of_o these_o evil_n and_o that_o god_n against_o who_o they_o be_v commit_v in_o who_o goodness_n they_o apprehend_v the_o haynousnes_n of_o the_o thought_n and_o so_o out_o of_o love_n unto_o his_o majesty_n be_v grieve_v at_o they_o and_o labour_n to_o subdue_v and_o reform_v the_o same_o whereas_o there_o may_v be_v a_o reluctation_n of_o conscience_n from_o a_o confuse_a knowledge_n of_o these_o evil_n not_o so_o much_o as_o they_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n as_o that_o they_o break_v out_o to_o daily_a contagion_n in_o the_o outward_a man_n as_o in_o the_o eye_n tongue_n hand_n and_o that_o not_o so_o much_o out_o of_o love_n unto_o god_n as_o ourselves_o for_o fear_v of_o shame_n punishment_n etc._n etc._n not_o so_o much_o out_o of_o a_o holy_a desire_n to_o be_v rid_v of_o they_o that_o the_o fountain_n may_v be_v purge_v as_o only_o out_o of_o a_o purpose_n to_o smother_v and_o conceal_v they_o that_o so_o our_o outward_a credit_n may_v be_v keep_v howsoever_o the_o heart_n lie_v open_a to_o the_o lord_n and_o be_v hereby_o inflame_v and_o harden_v therein_o a_o second_o difference_n between_o the_o resistance_n of_o the_o will_v to_o evil_a and_o reluctation_n of_o the_o conscience_n common_a to_o the_o naturalist_n and_o hypocrite_n be_v this_o that_o there_o be_v only_o a_o strive_n of_o the_o conscience_n against_o sin_n there_o usual_o follow_v two_o thing_n either_o policy_n to_o lay_v the_o conscience_n a_o sleep_n again_o by_o refuse_v the_o powerful_a mean_n which_o may_v thorough_o captivate_v the_o same_o to_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o truth_n or_o else_o a_o subtlety_n to_o blear_v the_o conscience_n and_o deceive_v it_o with_o such_o carnal_a rule_n as_o may_v enueagle_v it_o thereby_o to_o the_o convince_a of_o evil_n and_o justify_v of_o the_o same_o or_o else_o if_o the_o conscience_n be_v so_o convince_v that_o it_o can_v gainsay_v then_o usual_o follow_v despair_n and_o fearful_a issue_n thereof_o whereas_o if_o the_o will_v be_v true_o renew_a by_o grace_n as_o it_o abhor_v the_o evil_a whereunto_o it_o be_v entice_v so_o it_o use_v all_o gracious_a mean_n to_o avoid_v the_o same_o and_o decline_v whatsoever_o may_v ensnare_v it_o to_o the_o practice_n thereof_o a_o three_o difference_n between_o a_o in_o the_o use_n of_o holy_a mean_n either_o to_o decline_v the_o particular_a to_o which_o it_o be_v entice_v or_o if_o through_o violence_n of_o tentation_n or_o neglect_v of_o meaneâ—_n it_o be_v overtake_v therewith_o yet_o this_o prove_v a_o gracious_a mean_n to_o prevent_v further_a evils_n of_o security_n pride_n etc._n etc._n &_o so_o send_v we_o unto_o christ_n to_o be_v renew_a in_o his_o righteousness_n these_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o a_o gainsay_v conscience_n and_o resistance_n of_o the_o will_n a_o second_o deceit_n whereby_o the_o carnal_a man_n be_v bewitch_v in_o this_o conceit_n of_o his_o unwillingness_n to_o commit_v sin_n whereupon_o he_o build_v this_o dream_n that_o his_o thought_n be_v free_a because_o he_o consent_v not_o unto_o they_o be_v the_o mistake_n and_o misjudging_a of_o his_o unwillingness_n to_o commit_v evil_a for_o beside_o the_o reluctation_n of_o conscience_n incident_a to_o the_o natural_a man_n there_o may_v be_v also_o a_o kind_n of_o strive_a iâ—_n the_o will_n and_o affection_n common_a to_o the_o hypocrite_n which_o be_v far_o from_o that_o sanctify_a dislike_n of_o sin_n &_o purpose_n of_o goodness_n the_o difference_n hereof_o appear_v in_o these_o thing_n difference_n between_o the_o godly_a and_o wicked_a in_o not_o will_v to_o sin_n first_o in_o the_o predominancie_n of_o these_o affection_n the_o wicked_a though_o they_o have_v some_o desire_n to_o leave_v sin_n yet_o this_o be_v not_o their_o chief_a desire_n but_o rather_o their_o prime_n and_o chief_a desire_n be_v to_o live_v for_o ever_o therein_o either_o they_o know_v no_o other_o happiness_n or_o else_o they_o account_v this_o their_o chief_a happiness_n to_o revel_v secure_o therein_o wherein_o because_o they_o be_v interrupt_v by_o the_o conviction_n of_o conscience_n therefore_o as_o they_o do_v in_o their_o carnal_a wisdom_n labour_v the_o suppress_n and_o corrupt_v thereof_o that_o so_o they_o may_v more_o secure_o wallow_v
therein_o so_o if_o the_o conscience_n lie_v sore_o upon_o they_o then_o do_v they_o desire_v to_o leave_v some_o sin_n rather_o to_o procure_v peace_n to_o themselves_o and_o more_o liberty_n to_o other_o evil_n then_o in_o obedience_n to_o god_n will_v to_o give_v he_o the_o glory_n thereof_o they_o may_v happy_o be_v desirous_a to_o avoid_v open_a and_o gross_a evil_n but_o for_o secret_a sin_n they_o hug_v they_o in_o their_o bosom_n they_o may_v happy_o stick_v at_o some_o sin_n which_o may_v hinder_v their_o own_o present_a good_a of_o profit_n pleasure_n &c_n &c_n but_o such_o as_o tend_v to_o dishonour_n god_n or_o the_o hurt_n of_o their_o neighbour_n these_o they_o make_v no_o bone_n of_o they_o commit_v they_o with_o greediness_n they_o may_v stick_v at_o sin_n and_o be_v unwilling_a to_o commit_v it_o out_o of_o love_n to_o themselves_o because_o it_o may_v bring_v shame_n punishment_n etc._n etc._n but_o not_o in_o conscience_n of_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n not_o in_o desire_n to_o glorify_v god_n either_o they_o make_v it_o enough_o to_o avoid_v evil_a as_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o excuse_v they_o from_o do_v good_a or_o else_o they_o may_v be_v unwilling_a to_o some_o small_a evil_a that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v excuse_v in_o a_o great_a mischief_n this_o be_v once_o their_o unwillingness_n to_o evil_n arise_v not_o immediate_o and_o primary_o from_o a_o sanctify_a heart_n hate_v the_o same_o out_o of_o love_n unto_o god_n but_o from_o carnal_a wisdom_n out_o of_o self_n love_n and_o like_n of_o sin_n they_o like_v it_o simple_o and_o chief_o as_o their_o darling_n and_o idol_n and_o endeavour_v by_o all_o mean_n to_o frolic_v therein_o only_o their_o dislike_n arise_v from_o by_o respect_n and_o outward_a occasion_n the_o second_o difference_n thus_o as_o their_o unwillingnes_n to_o evil_a be_v not_o root_v primary_o in_o the_o heart_n so_o it_o quick_o vanish_v and_o decay_v either_o when_o the_o bridle_n be_v remove_v or_o contrary_a occasion_n be_v offer_v as_o neglect_v and_o reject_v with_o all_o wisdom_n such_o mean_n as_o may_v strengthen_v we_o against_o sin_n and_o embrace_v willing_o whatsoever_o occasion_n may_v make_v way_n thereunto_o 3._o diff._n and_o hence_o proceed_v a_o 3._o difference_n of_o this_o unwillingness_n in_o the_o wicked_a that_o as_o it_o be_v quick_o cool_v and_o quench_v the_o use_n of_o all_o holy_a mean_n to_o attain_v their_o end_n and_o so_o by_o god_n mercy_n do_v in_o some_o measure_n accomplish_v the_o same_o furtherances_n hereunto_o be_v in_o many_o that_o thought_n be_v free_n the_o ordinary_a manner_n of_o teach_v in_o these_o day_n with_o some_o be_v either_o to_o preach_v altogether_o the_o gospel_n and_o not_o the_o law_n &_o so_o to_o plaster_n over_o the_o wound_n before_o it_o be_v search_v and_o lance_v whereby_o the_o sore_a be_v conceit_v to_o be_v whole_a before_o it_o be_v rip_v up_o before_o the_o heart_n and_o core_n thereof_o be_v discern_v and_o purge_v out_o this_o prove_v a_o occasion_n to_o flatter_v we_o in_o the_o goodness_n of_o our_o heart_n that_o our_o thought_n be_v free_a because_o they_o be_v not_o captivate_v by_o the_o word_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o christ_n and_o hereunto_o further_v that_o other_o manner_n of_o teach_v ordinary_a with_o some_o in_o these_o time_n which_o usual_o make_v only_o to_o the_o tickle_a of_o the_o itch_a ear_n with_o quaint_a phrase_n and_o entice_a discourse_n as_o if_o thereby_o they_o rather_o intend_v to_o magnify_v themselves_o in_o the_o mind_n of_o their_o hearer_n then_o to_o abase_v they_o to_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o word_n rather_o to_o puff_n they_o up_o with_o conceit_n of_o what_o they_o be_v not_o as_o a_o learned_a auditory_a a_o people_n so_o wise_a as_o that_o rather_o they_o can_v judge_v of_o their_o teacher_n than_o their_o teacher_n can_v judge_v they_o so_o that_o the_o heart_n be_v now_o altogether_o neglect_v and_o the_o ear_n and_o brain_n only_o please_v be_v it_o any_o marvel_n if_o the_o hart_n hereby_o be_v flatter_v with_o conceit_n of_o it_o own_o goodness_n if_o this_o conceit_n follow_v that_o thought_n be_v free_a exclude_v all_o pursuit_n and_o hope_v of_o the_o happiness_n of_o a_o better_a life_n 3_o it_o also_o prove_v most_o effectual_a to_o deprive_v we_o of_o all_o interest_n in_o christ_n jesus_n who_o only_o come_v to_o save_v sinner_n and_o therefore_o if_o we_o acknowledge_v not_o our_o sin_n god_n promise_n belong_v not_o to_o we_o that_o he_o will_v forgive_v we_o 1._o john_n 1.8_o joh._n 9.26.27_o and_o so_o it_o become_v a_o most_o effectual_a mean_n to_o exclude_v from_o all_o hope_n of_o entertain_v christ_n as_o produce_v a_o presumptuous_a power_n to_o limit_v and_o prescribe_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n that_o they_o ought_v not_o to_o search_v the_o heart_n and_o captivate_v the_o thought_n and_o bring_v they_o to_o obedience_n but_o that_o rather_o they_o serve_v only_o as_o matter_n of_o policy_n with_o some_o to_o approve_v and_o maintain_v civil_a honesty_n and_o outward_a holiness_n for_o the_o attain_n of_o worldly_a end_n and_o so_o utter_o exclude_v faith_n whereby_o the_o heart_n may_v be_v convince_v and_o so_o purify_v by_o christ_n to_o the_o obedience_n thereof_o and_o so_o this_o prove_v a_o effectual_a mean_n to_o confound_v all_o inward_a piety_n and_o to_o set_v up_o a_o idol_n of_o civil_a and_o moral_a righteousness_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n and_o thereby_o become_v a_o powerful_a mean_n to_o give_v the_o bridle_n not_o only_o unto_o all_o secret_a wickedness_n as_o not_o be_v apparent_a unto_o man_n but_o in_o the_o end_n also_o to_o all_o gross_a wickedness_n because_o this_o be_v once_o grant_v that_o thought_n be_v free_a it_o never_o so_o vile_a we_o shall_v in_o the_o end_n much_o less_o regard_v the_o presence_n of_o man_n and_o so_o break_v out_o into_o all_o open_a filthiness_n and_o so_o the_o bridle_n be_v give_v to_o all_o gross_a wickedness_n hereupon_o follow_v hardness_n of_o heart_n which_o be_v past_a feeling_n now_o commit_v sin_n with_o greediness_n and_o the_o hart_n be_v obdurate_a that_o it_o convince_v not_o for_o sin_n hereupon_o follow_v a_o reprobate_a sense_n to_o justify_v &_o approve_v any_o wickedness_n and_o so_o this_o open_v a_o gap_n to_o all_o presumptuous_a wickedness_n as_o of_o god_n &_o so_o we_o shall_v by_o god_n mercy_n make_v good_a advantage_n of_o they_o so_o that_o though_o we_o may_v not_o expect_v ordinary_o any_o such_o extraordinary_a revelation_n by_o dream_n yet_o if_o it_o please_v god_n as_o who_o can_v restrain_v his_o power_n and_o goodness_n herein_o to_o acquaint_v we_o hereby_o with_o some_o occasion_n to_o come_v which_o may_v tend_v to_o our_o own_o and_o the_o general_a good_a we_o may_v so_o far_o stand_v upon_o these_o as_o to_o use_v ordinary_a mean_n by_o prayer_n the_o word_n and_o the_o like_a for_o the_o prepare_n of_o we_o
