first_o king_n to_o zedekiah_n their_o last_o be_v never_o under_o such_o intolerable_a oppression_n and_o misery_n as_o in_o those_o time_n wherein_o their_o king_n though_o wicked_a and_o bloody_a be_v put_v to_o death_n by_o their_o subject_n that_o the_o murderer_n shall_v sure_o be_v put_v to_o death_n 1._o be_v a_o know_a precept_n of_o god_n if_o this_o must_v be_v dispense_v withal_o show_v we_o the_o absolute_a present_a and_o clear_a necessity_n of_o it_o if_o you_o can_v will_v you_o speak_v wicked_o for_o god_n etc._n etc._n as_o for_o the_o army_n proceed_n if_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n that_o the_o land_n shall_v be_v cleanse_v from_o blood-guiltiness_n that_o the_o great_a end_n of_o the_o covenant_n and_o all_o our_o war_n shall_v be_v secure_v etc._n etc._n then_o be_v there_o a_o necessity_n on_o the_o army_n to_o take_v that_o course_n they_o do_v answ._n 1._o i_o may_v answer_v you_o by_o way_n of_o retortion_n that_o the_o murderer_n shall_v be_v put_v to_o death_n be_v a_o know_a precept_n that_o goring_n and_o owen_n have_v murder_v many_o be_v a_o know_a practice_n for_o their_o pardon_n there_o be_v a_o know_a vote_n now_o if_o they_o be_v innocent_a why_o be_v they_o condemn_v if_o guilty_a of_o blood_n why_o be_v they_o spare_v can_v you_o dispense_v with_o blood_n and_o none_o else_o 2._o though_o murder_v of_o one_o personal_o and_o malicious_o can_v be_v dispense_v withal_o yet_o god_n never_o require_v that_o all_o who_o in_o a_o military_a way_n shed_v blood_n shall_v be_v put_v to_o death_n as_o be_v clear_a in_o the_o case_n of_o absalon_n rebellion_n and_o the_o benjamite_n unjust_a war_n with_o many_o other_o neither_o david_n nor_o the_o man_n of_o judah_n when_o the_o sword_n have_v determine_v the_o controversy_n in_o the_o field_n on_o their_o side_n and_o have_v cut_v off_o many_o of_o the_o evil_a doer_n hold_v themselves_o bind_v to_o cut_v off_o the_o remainder_n that_o be_v leave_v of_o the_o army_n either_o in_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o if_o you_o think_v that_o this_o precept_n viz._n that_o the_o murderer_n be_v put_v to_o death_n reach_v to_o all_o blood_n spill_v in_o a_o military_a way_n then_o be_v you_o bind_v that_o every_o man_n that_o be_v in_o the_o king_n army_n shall_v be_v put_v to_o death_n else_o according_a to_o you_o the_o land_n will_v be_v defile_v with_o blood_n 3._o to_o what_o you_o say_v in_o the_o last_o place_n that_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n on_o the_o army_n to_o take_v that_o course_n they_o do_v if_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n that_o the_o land_n shall_v he_o cleanse_v from_o blood_n etc._n etc._n i_o shall_v return_v this_o brief_a answer_n 1._o the_o army_n plead_v a_o necessity_n in_o the_o year_n 1647._o for_o thing_n of_o a_o quite_o contrary_a nature_n to_o what_o they_o plead_v a_o necessity_n for_o in_o nov._n 1648._o 2._o who_o be_v the_o most_o competent_a judge_n the_o parliament_n or_o the_o army_n to_o judge_v of_o this_o necessity_n if_o you_o say_v the_o parliament_n they_o see_v no_o such_o necessity_n why_o do_v not_o the_o army_n then_o acquiesce_v in_o their_o judgement_n as_o they_o once_o promise_v to_o do_v if_o
