XLVIII The ornaments and priviledges of the church ¶ A long and psalm ‖ Or of for the sons of Korah GReat is the LORD and greatly to be praised in the city of our God in the mountain of his holiness 2 Beautiful for situation the joy of the whole earth is mount Zion on the sides of the north the city of the great king 3 God is known in her palaces for a refuge 4 For lo the kings were assembled they passed by together 5 They saw it and so they marvelled they were troubled and hasted away 6 Fear took hold upon them there and pain as of a woman in travail 7 Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind 8 As we have heard so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts in the city of our God God will establish it for ever Selah 9 We have thought of thy loving kindness O God in the midst of thy temple 10 According to thy name O God so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth thy right hand is full of righteousness 11 Let mount Zion rejoyce let the daughters of Judah be glad because of thy judgements 12 Walk about Zion and go round about her tell the towers thereof 13 † Heb. set your heart to her bulwarks Mark ye well her bulwarks ‖ Or raise up consider her palaces that ye may tell it to the generation following 14 For this God is our God for ever and ever he will be our guide even unto death PSAL. XLIX 1 An earnest perswasion to build the faith of resurrection not on worldly power but on God 16 Worldly prosperity is not to be admired ¶ To the chief musician A psalm ‖ Or of for the sons of Korah HEar this all ye people give ear all ye inhabitants of the world 2 Both low and high rich and poor together 3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding 4 * Ps ●8 2 Mat. 13.35 I will incline mine ear to a parable I will open my dark saying upon the harp 5 Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about 6 They that trust in their wealth and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches 7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother nor give to God a ransom for him 8 For the redemption of their soul is precious and it ceaseth for ever 9 That he should still live for ever end not see corruption 10 For he seeth that wise men die likewise the fool and the brutish person perish and leave their wealth to others 11 Their inward thought is that their houses shall continue for ever and their dwelling places † Heb. to generation and generation to all generations they call their lands after their own names 12 Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not he is like the beasts that perish 13 This their way is their folly yet their posterity † Heb. delight in their mouth approve their sayings Selah 14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave death shall seed on them and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning and their ‖ Or strength beauty shall consume ‖ Or the grave being an habitation to every one of them in the grave from their dwelling 15 But God will redeem my soul † Heb. from the hand of the grave from the power of ‖ Or hell the grave for he shall receive me Selah 16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich when the glory of his house is increased 17 * Job 27.19 For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away his glory shall not descend after him 18 Though † Heb. in his life whiles he lived he blessed his soul and men will praise thee when thou doest well to thy self 19
poor and sorrowful let thy salvation O God set me up on high 30 I will praise the name of God with a song and will magnifie him with thanksgiving 31 This also shall please the LORD better then an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs 32 The ‖ Or meek humble shall see this and be glad and your heart shall live that seek God 33 For the LORD heareth the poor and despiseth not his prisoners 34 Let the heaven and earth praise him the seas and every thing that † Heb. creepeth moveth therein 35 For God will save Sion and will build the cities of Judah that they may dwell there and have it in possession 36 The seed also of his servants shall inherit it and they that love his name shall dwell therein PSAL. LXXI 1 David in confidence of faith and experience of Gods favour prayeth both for himself and against the enemies of his soul 14 He promiseth constancy 17 He prayeth for perseverance 19 He praiseth God and promiseth to do it chearfully IN * Psal 31.1 thee O LORD do I put my trust let me never be put to confusion 2 Deliver me in thy righteousness and cause me to escape incline thine ear unto me and save me 3 † Heb. ●e thou to me for a ●●ck of habitation Be thou my strong habitation whereunto I may continually resort thou hast given commandment to save me for thou art my rock and my fortress 4 Deliver me O my God out of the hand of the wicked out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man 5 For thou art my hope O Lord GOD thou art my trust from my youth 6 By thee have I been holden up from the womb thou art he that took me out of my mothers bowels my praise shall be continually of thee 7 I am as a wonder unto many but thou art my strong refuge 8 Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day 9 Cast me not off in the time of old age forsake me not when my strength faileth 10 For mine enemies speak against me and they that † Heb. watch or observe lay wait for my soul take counsel together 11 Saying God hath forsaken him persecute and take him for there is none to deliver him 12 O God be not far from me O my God make haste for my help 13 Let them be confounded and consumed that are adversaries to my soul let them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt 14 But I will hope continually and will yet praise thee more and more 15 My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day for I know not the numbers thereof 16 I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD I will make mention of thy righteousness even of thine onely 17 O God thou hast taught me from my youth and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works 18 Now also † Heb. unto old a●e and trar hairs when I am old and gray-headed O God forsake me not until I have shewed † Heb. thine arm thy strength unto this generation and thy power to every one that is to come 19 Thy righteousness also O God is very high who hast done great things O God who is like unto thee 20 Thou which hast shewed me great and sore troubles shalt quicken me again and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth 21 Thou shalt increase my greatness and comfort me on every side 22 I will also praise thee † Heb. with the instrument of psaltery with the psaltery even thy truth O my God unto thee will I sing with the harp O thou holy One of Israel 23 My lips shall greatly rejoyce when I sing unto thee and my soul which thou hast redeemed 24 My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long for they are confounded for they are brought unto shame that seek my hurt PSAL. LXXII 1 David praying for Solomon sheweth the goodness and glory of his in type and in truth of Christs kingdom 18 He blesseth God ¶ A psalm ‖ Or of for Solomon GIve the king thy judgements O God and thy righteousness unto the kings son 2 He shall judge thy people with righteousness and thy poor with judgement 3 The mountains shall bring peace to the people and the little hills by righteousness 4 He shall judge the poor of the people he shall save the children of the needy and shall break in pieces the oppressour 5 They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure throughout all generations 6 He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass as showres that water the earth 7 In his days shall the righteous flourish and abundance of peace † Heb. if I there 〈◊〉 no moon so long as the moon endureth 8 He shall have dominion also from sea to sea and from the river unto the ends of the earth 9 They that dwell in the wilderness shall how before him and his enemies shall lick the dust 10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts 11 Yea all kings shall fall down before him all nations shall serve him 12 For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth the poor also and him that hath no helper 13 He shall spare the poor needy shall save the souls of the needy 14 He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence and precious shall their bloud be in his sight 15 And he shall live and to him † Heb. one shall give shall be given of the gold of Sheba prayer also shall be made for him continually and daily shall he be praised 16 There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains the fruit thereof shall 〈◊〉 like Lebanon and they of the city shall 〈…〉 grass of the earth 17 His name † Heb. shall 〈◊〉 shall endure for ever † Heb. shall be as a son to continu● his fath●●s name 〈…〉 his name shall be continued

CXLVI 1 The psalmist voweth perpetual praises to God 3 He exborteth not to trust in man 5 God for his power justice mercy and kingdom is onely worthy to be trusted † Heb. CXLVII 1 The prophet exhorteth to praise God for his care of the church 4 his power 6 and his mercy 7 to praise him for his providence 12 to praise him for his blessings upon the kingdom 15 for his power over the meteors 19 and for his ordinances in the church PRaise ye the LORD for it is good to sing praises unto our God for it is pleasant and praise is comely 2 The LORD doth build up Jerusalem he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel 3 He healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their † Heb. griefs wounds 4 He telleth the number of the stars he calleth them all by their names 5 Great is our Lord and of great power † Heb. of his understanding there is no number his understanding is infinite 6 The LORD listeth up the meek he casteth the wicked down to the ground 7 Sing unto the LORD with thanksgiving sing praise upon the harp unto our God 8 Who covereth the heaven with clouds who prepareth rain for the earth who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains 9 * Job 38.41 Psal 104.27 28. CXLVIII 1 The psalmist exhorteth the celestial 7 the terrestrial 11 and the rational creatures to praise God † Heb. break in pieces the horse and his rider and with thee will I break in pieces the chariot and his rider 22 With thee also will I break in pieces man and woman and with thee will I break in pieces old and young and with thee will I break in pieces the young man and the maid 23 I will also break in pieces with thee the shepherd and his flock and with thee will I break in pieces the husbandman and his yoke of oxen and with thee will I break in pieces captains and rulers 24 And I will render unto Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Caldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight saith the LORD 25 Behold I am against thee O destroying mountain saith the LORD which destroyest all the earth and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee and roll thee down from the rocks and will make thee a burnt mountain 26 And they shall not take of thee a stone for a corner nor a stone for foundations but thou shalt be † Heb. everlasting desolations desolate for ever saith the LORD 27 Set ye up a standard in the land blow the trumpet among the nations prepare the nations against her call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat Minni and Ashchenaz appoint a captain against her cause the horses to come up as the rough caterpillers 28 Prepare against her the nations with the kings of the Medes the captains thereof and all the rulers thereof and all the land of his dominion 29 And the land shall tremble and sorrow for every purpose of the LORD shall be performed against Babylon to make the land of Babylon a desolation without an inhabitant 30 The mighty men of Babylon have forborn to fight they have remained in their holds their might hath sailed they became as women they have burnt her dwelling-places her bars are broken 31 One post shall run to meet another and one messenger to meet another to shew the king of Babylon that his city is taken at one end 32 And that the passages are stopped and the reeds they have burnt with fire and the men of war are affrighted 33 For thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing-floor ‖ Or in the time that be thresheth her it is time to thresh her yet a little while and the time of her harvest shall come 34 Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured me he hath crushed me he hath made me an empty vessel he hath swallowed me up like a dragon he hath filled his belly with my delicates he hath cast me out 35 † Heb. my violence The violence done to me and to my ‖ Or remainde● flesh be upon Babylon shall the † Heb inhabitrest inhabitant of Zion say and my bloud upon the inhabitants of Caldea shall Jerusalem say 36 Therefore thus saith the LORD Behold I will plead thy cause and take vengeance for thee and I will dry up her sea and make her springs dry 37 And Babylon shall become heaps a dwelling-place for dragons an astonishment and an hissing without an inhabitant 38 They shall roar together like lions they shall ‖ Or shake themselves yell as lions whelps 39 In their heat I will make their feasts and I will make them drunken that they may rejoyce and sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake saith the LORD 40 I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter like rams with he goats 41 How is Sheshach taken and how is the praise of the whole earth surprised how is Babylon become an astonishment among the nations 42 The sea is come up upon Babylon she is covered with the multitude of the waves thereof 43 Her cities are a desolation a dry land and a wilderness a land wherein no man dwelleth neither doth any son of man pass thereby 44 And I will punish Bel in Babylon and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him yea the wall of Babylon shall fall 45 My people go ye out of the midst of her and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger or the LORD 46 And lest your heart faint and ye fear for the rumour that shall be heard in the land a rumour shall both come one year and after that in another year shall come a rumour and violence in the land ruler against ruler 47 Therefore behold the days come that I will † Heb. visit upon do judgement upon the graven images of Babylon and her whole land shall be confounded and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her 48 Then the heaven and the earth and all that is therein shall sing for Babylon for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north saith the LORD 49 ‖ Or both Babylon is to fall O ye slain of Israd and with Babylon c As Babylon hath caused the slain of Israel to fall so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all ‖ Or the countrey the earth 50 Ye that have escaped the sword go away stand not still remember the LORD afar off and let Jerusalem come into your minde 52 We are confounded because we have heard reproach shame hath covered our faces for strangers are come into the santuaries of the LORDS house 52 Wherefore behold the days come saith the LORD that I will do judgement upon her graven images and through all her land the wounded shall groan 53 Though Babylon should mount up to heaven and though she should fortifie the height of her strength yet from me shall spoilers come unto

IV. 1 Deberah and Barak deliver Israel from Jabin and Sisera 18 Jael killeth Sisera ANd the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD when Ehud was dead 2 And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan that reigned in Hazor the captain of whose host was Sisera which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles 3 And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD for he had nine hundred chariots of iron and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel 4 ¶ And Deboral a prophetess the wife of Lapidoth she judged Israel at that time 5 And she dwelt under the palm-tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in mount Ephraim and the children of Israel came up to her for judgement 6 And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali and said unto him Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded saying Go and draw toward mount Tabor and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun 7 And I will draw unto thee to the * Psal 83.9 10. river Kishon Sisera the captain of Jabins army with his chariots and his multitude and I will deliver him into thine hand 8 And Barak said unto her If thou wilt go with me then I will go but if thou wilt not go with me then I will not go 9 And she said I will surely go with thee notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman And Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh 10 ¶ And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet and Deborah went up with him 11 Now Heber the Kenite which was of the children of * Numb 10.29 Hobab the father in law of Moses had severed himself from the Kenites and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim which is by Kedesh 12 And they shewed Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor 13 And Sisera † Heb. gathered by cr●● or proclamation gathered together all his chariots even nine hundred chariots of iron and all the people that were with him from Harosheth of the Gentilēs unto the river of Kishon 14 And Deborah said unto Barak Up for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand is not the LORD gone out before thee So Barak went down from mount Tabor and ten thousand men after him 15 And * Psal ●● 9.10 the LORD discomfited Sisera and all his chariots and all his host with the edge of the sword before Barak so that Sisera lighted down off his chariot and fled away on his feet 16 But Barak pursued after the chariots and after the host unto Harosheth of the Gentiles and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword and there was not † Heb. unto ou● a man left 17 Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite 18 ¶ And Jael went out to meet Sisera and said unto him Turn in my lord turn in to me fear not and when he had turned in unto her into the tent she covered him with a ‖ Or rug or Ha●ket mantle 19 And he said unto her Give me I pray thee a little water to drink for I am thirsty and she opened * Ch. 5.25 bottle of milk and gave him drink and covered him 20 Again he said unto her Stand in the door of the tent and it shall be when any man doth come and enquire of thee and say Is there any man here that thou shalt say No. 21 Then Jael Hebers wife took a nail of the tent and † Heb. put took an hammer in her hand and went softly unto him and smote the nail into his temples and fastned it into the ground for he was fast asleep and weary so he died 22 And behold as Barak pursued Sisera Jael came out to meet him and said unto him Come and I will shew thee the man whom thou seekest And when he came into her tent behold Sisera lay dead and the nail was in his temples 23 So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel 24 And the hand of the children of Israel † Heb. going went and was bard prospered and prevailed against Jabin the king of Canaan until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan CHAP. V. 1 The song of Deborab and Barak THen sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day saying 2 Praise ye the LORD for the avenging of Israel when the people willingly offered themselves 3 Hear O ye kings give ear O ye princes I even I will sing unto the LORD I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel 4 LORD * Deut. 4.11 when thou wentest out of Seir when thou marchedst out of the field of Edom the earth trembled and the heavens dropped the clouds also dropped water 5 * Ps 9● 5 The mountains † Heb. flowed melted from before the LORD even * Ex. 19.18 that Sinai from before the LORD God of Israel 6 In the days of * Ch. 3.31 Shamgar the son of Anath in the days of * Ch 4.18 Jael the high-ways were unoccupied and the † Heb. walkers of paths travellers walked through † Heb. crooked ways by-ways 7 The inhabitants of the villages ceased they ceased in Israel until that I Deborah arose that I arose a mother in Israel 8 They chose new gods then was war in the gates was there a shield or spear seen among fourty thousand in Israel 9 My heart is toward the governours of Israel that offered themselves willingly among the people Bless ye the LORD 10 ‖ Or Meditate Speak ye that ride on white asses ye that sit in judgment and walk by the way 11 They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water there shall they rehearse the † Heb. righteousnesses of the LORD righteous acts of the LORD even the righteous acts towards the inhabitants of his villages in Israel then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates 12 Awake awake Deborah awake awake utter a song arise Barak and lead thy captivity captive thou son of Abinoam 13 Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people the LORD made me have
the people went forth and brought them and made themselves booths every one upon the roof of his house and in their courts and in the courts of the house of God and in the street of the water-gate and in the street of the gate of Ephraim 17 And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths and sat under the booths for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so and there was very great gladness 18 Also day by day from the first day unto the last day he read in the book of the law of God and they kept the feast seven days and on the eighth day was † Heb. a restraint a solemn assembly according unto the manner CHAP. 9 Unto you therefore O kings do I speak that ye may learn wisdom and not fall away 10 For they that keep holiness holily shall be ‖ Or justified judged holy and they that have learned such things shall finde ‖ Or a defence what to answer 11 Wherefore set your affection upon my words desire them and ye shall be instructed 12 Wisdom is glorious and never fadeth away yea she is easily seen of them that love her and found of such as seek her 13 She preventeth them that desire her in making her self first known unto them 14 Whoso seeketh her early shall have no great travel for he shall finde her sitting at his doors 15 To think therefore upon her is perfection of wisdom and whoso watcheth for her shall quickly be without care 16 For she goeth about seeking such as are worthy of her sheweth her self favourably unto them in the ways and meeteth them in every thought 17 For the very true beginning of her is the desire of ‖ Or nurture discipline and the care of discipline is love 18 And love is the keeping of her laws and the giving heed unto her laws is the assurance of incorruption 19 And incorruption maketh us near unto God 20 Therefore the desire of wisdom bringeth to a kingdom 21 If your delight be then in thrones and sceptres O ye kings of the people honour wisdom that ye may reign for evermore 22 As for wisdom what she is and how she came up I will tell you and will not hide mysteries from you but will seek her out from the beginning of her nativity and bring the knowledge of her into light and will not pass over the truth 23 Neither will I go with-consuming envy for such a man shall have no fellowship with wisdom 24 But the multitude of the wise is ●●e welfare of the world and a wise king is the upholding of the peo●●e 25 Receive therefore instruction through my words and it shall do you good CHAP. VIII 2 He is in love with wisdom 4 for he that hath it hath every good thing 21 It cannot be bad but from God WIsdom reacheth from one end to another mightily and ‖ Or profitably sweetly doth she order all things 2 I loved her and sought her out from my youth I desired ‖ Or to marry her to my self to make her my spouse and I was a lover of her beauty 3 In that she is conversant with God she magnifieth her nobility yea the Lord of all things himself

burnt-offerings of rams and bullocks and like as in ten thousands of fat lambs so let our sacrifice be in thy sight this day and grant that we may wholly go after thee for they shall not be confounded that put their trust in thee 18 And now we follow thee with all our heart we fear thee and seek thy face 19 Put us not to shame but deal with us after thy loving kindness and according to the multitude of thy mercies 20 Deliver us also according to thy marvellous works give glory to thy name O Lord let all them that do thy servants hurt be ashamed 21 And let them be confounded ‖ Or by thy
