not_o any_o just_a cause_n to_o fear_v since_o i_o be_o he_o who_o do_v communicate_v to_o all_o competent_a grace_n and_o force_n towards_o the_o satisfy_n of_o their_o obligation_n so_o they_o be_v not_o slack_a and_o negligent_a of_o themselves_o but_o do_v put_v to_o their_o own_o help_a hand_n as_o much_o as_o they_o be_v able_a and_o it_o be_v my_o manner_n of_o old_a to_o be_v rather_o mettle_n and_o those_o very_a man_n be_v of_o just_a and_o perfect_a weight_n in_o my_o balance_n for_o man_n measure_v all_o thing_n by_o the_o outward_a show_n but_o i_o cast_v my_o eye_n upon_o the_o inward_a and_o upon_o that_o which_o lie_v hide_v in_o the_o mind_n and_o therefore_o many_o be_v of_o man_n contemn_v as_o vile_a and_o reject_v as_o little_a profitable_a who_o notwithstanding_o be_v for_o many_o respect_n in_o my_o sight_n to_o be_v prefer_v before_o other_o and_o so_o their_o humility_n do_v as_o precious_a stone_n shine_v beautiful_a in_o my_o eye_n 10._o the_o world_n only_o esteem_v the_o rich_a &_o mighty_a who_o have_v receive_v their_o stipend_n of_o pride_n be_v eftsoon_o puff_v up_o beyond_o themselves_o and_o do_v fill_v all_o thing_n with_o their_o insolence_n and_o loftyne_n of_o mind_n and_o these_o though_o disturber_n of_o peace_n do_v meruailous_o please_v the_o world_n but_o the_o humble_a and_o peaceable_a please_v i_o who_o i_o so_o much_o esteem_n that_o i_o have_v a_o particular_a care_n of_o they_o and_o worthy_o because_o there_o be_v not_o a_o virtue_n of_o more_o regard_n with_o i_o than_o be_v that_o of_o humility_n and_o more_o than_o that_o no_o virtue_n be_v please_v to_o i_o that_o be_v not_o found_v in_o humility_n heaven_n gate_n have_v not_o be_v open_v to_o my_o mother_n who_o be_v ever_o most_o dear_a unto_o i_o if_o notwithstanding_o her_o virginity_n and_o excellent_a purity_n she_o have_v appear_v without_o humility_n one_o may_v get_v into_o heaven_n without_o virginity_n but_o without_o humility_n none_o at_o all_o and_o because_o when_o she_o live_v upon_o earth_n she_o most_o of_o all_o practise_a humility_n and_o though_o she_o be_v the_o mother_n of_o god_n and_o the_o queen_n of_o heaven_n yet_o she_o call_v and_o repute_v herself_o a_o handmaid_n she_o merit_v not_o only_o to_o have_v a_o place_n in_o heaven_n but_o also_o to_o be_v exalt_v above_o all_o the_o quire_n of_o angel_n 11._o there_o be_v some_o religious_a who_o complain_v that_o they_o find_v not_o that_o tranquillity_n and_o peace_n of_o mind_n which_o they_o have_v in_o their_o first_o enter_v into_o religion_n but_o if_o they_o search_v out_o the_o cause_n they_o will_v impute_v the_o fault_n to_o themselves_o the_o cause_n of_o their_o disquiet_n be_v the_o defect_n and_o want_n of_o humility_n the_o humble_a have_v peace_n with_o god_n he_o have_v peace_n with_o man_n he_o have_v peace_n with_o himself_o and_o which_o be_v more_o commendable_a he_o have_v peace_n with_o his_o adversary_n for_o none_o may_v without_o breach_n of_o peace_n deal_v with_o a_o proud_a person_n but_o the_o humble_a yea_o the_o proud_a himself_o esteem_v high_o of_o humility_n because_o lest_o he_o may_v resist_v his_o superior_n and_o better_n 4._o again_o if_o he_o turn_v himself_o to_o other_o religious_a person_n among_o who_o he_o live_v he_o find_v no_o comfort_n at_o all_o for_o if_o he_o perceive_v that_o the_o wise_a &_o spiritual_a brethren_n make_v very_o little_a reckon_n of_o he_o &_o shun_v his_o conversation_n and_o company_n in_o what_o they_o can_v he_o can_v but_o be_v much_o trouble_v &_o move_v in_o mind_n and_o therefore_o be_v force_v to_o keep_v company_n with_o his_o like_a who_o be_v desirous_a of_o a_o more_o free_a and_o disorder_a life_n neither_o can_v wild_a beast_n the_o virtue_n of_o chastity_n be_v to_o make_v war_n who_o be_v call_v on_o for_o her_o aid_n willing_o present_v herself_o &_o great_o repress_v the_o fury_n of_o this_o beast_n and_o abate_v the_o concupiscence_n heat_n wherefore_o it_o be_v the_o general_a office_n and_o charge_n of_o chastity_n to_o moderate_v and_o direct_v all_o the_o desire_n of_o the_o sense_n according_a world_n not_o that_o a_o man_n give_v over_o to_o live_v under_o heaven_n or_o to_o dwell_v on_o earth_n or_o to_o draw_v this_o air_n for_o all_o these_o be_v necessary_a and_o as_o common_a to_o secular_a man_n as_o to_o religious_a but_o that_o he_o lead_v a_o life_n far_o different_a from_o that_o of_o the_o world_n among_o the_o evil_n of_o this_o world_n one_o be_v to_o neglect_v spiritual_a thing_n &_o to_o seek_v after_o the_o pleasure_n &_o contentment_n of_o the_o flesh_n the_o religious_a therefore_o who_o forsake_v the_o world_n in_o sincerity_n must_v lead_v a_o life_n in_o conversation_n and_o manner_n contrary_a to_o the_o world_n by_o mortification_n of_o their_o desire_n by_o a_o renunciation_n of_o the_o sense_n delight_n and_o by_o a_o contemn_v of_o whatsoever_o this_o blind_a world_n love_v and_o embrace_v and_o in_o brief_a their_o conversation_n must_v be_v in_o heaven_n but_o nothing_o so_o much_o contradict_v the_o desire_n of_o heavenly_a thing_n &_o nothing_o be_v so_o prejudicial_a to_o the_o taste_n of_o spiritual_a matter_n as_o be_v incontinency_n while_o on_o the_o contrary_a nothing_o promote_v a_o religious_a man_n so_o to_o the_o lead_n of_o a_o heavenly_a life_n as_o do_v chastity_n alone_o which_o as_o it_o conserve_v the_o mind_n pure_a so_o do_v it_o raise_v a_o religious_a man_n to_o the_o contemplation_n of_o heavenly_a thing_n the_o further_a thy_o life_n be_v off_o from_o that_o of_o the_o world_n the_o more_o secure_a shall_v thy_o chastity_n be_v and_o upon_o earth_n will_v soon_o further_o thou_o to_o the_o lead_n of_o a_o celestial_a life_n 5._o son_n do_v thou_o conceive_v the_o cause_n why_o any_o unchaste_a man_n even_o among_o the_o heathen_n never_o come_v to_o so_o great_a impudence_n as_o he_o dare_v public_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o other_o commit_v any_o lascivious_a act_n but_o rather_o confound_v in_o himself_o will_v seek_v about_o for_o corner_n and_o hide_a place_n whereby_o to_o hide_v and_o cover_v his_o fault_n natural_a light_n have_v teach_v he_o that_o all_o act_n of_o uncleanes_n be_v unworthy_a the_o sight_n of_o man_n and_o therefore_o he_o seek_v corner_n and_o white_a and_o pure_a thing_n the_o very_a lest_o stain_n appear_v and_o the_o white_a it_o be_v the_o more_o plain_o do_v the_o spot_n discover_v itself_o even_o so_o in_o a_o religious_a life_n because_o it_o be_v most_o white_a &_o pure_a the_o very_a lest_o defect_n of_o purity_n be_v object_v to_o the_o eye_n and_o offend_v they_o that_o see_v it_o secular_a man_n have_v religious_a for_o certain_a spectacle_n of_o virtue_n but_o a_o lookingglass_n displease_v unless_o it_o be_v all_o clear_a and_o shine_a in_o other_o virtue_n a_o light_a default_n never_o offend_v so_o much_o or_o do_v so_o great_a hurt_n in_o a_o religious_a man_n as_o do_v a_o defect_n in_o chastity_n a_o religious_a man_n do_v not_o easy_o incur_v the_o loss_n of_o his_o good_a name_n if_o either_o he_o transgress_v somewhat_o against_o meekness_n because_o he_o be_v by_o nature_n choleric_a or_o be_v not_o very_o frank_a and_o liberal_a or_o seek_v after_o a_o little_a vain_a glory_n or_o be_v not_o perfect_o humble_a â—r_n fall_v into_o some_o like_a defect_n but_o if_o he_o commit_v but_o some_o very_a little_a matter_n against_o chastity_n he_o forthwith_o obscure_v the_o opinion_n of_o his_o good_a name_n for_o every_o wise_a man_n judge_v that_o a_o religious_a man_n though_o he_o be_v never_o so_o hard_a and_o fast_o hand_v may_v yet_o be_v a_o holy_a man_n in_o like_a manner_n one_o by_o nature_n choleric_a or_o somewhat_o curious_a may_v yet_o be_v pious_a and_o devout_a but_o when_o they_o come_v to_o chastity_n the_o contrary_a be_v conceyve_v namely_o that_o there_o can_v be_v any_o holiness_n where_o incontinency_n be_v nor_o that_o the_o devotion_n can_v be_v sincere_a where_o the_o perturbation_n of_o mind_n bear_v sway_n neither_o can_v there_o be_v spirit_n where_o the_o flesh_n command_v beside_o the_o defect_n of_o other_o virtue_n be_v easy_o excuse_v either_o for_o that_o they_o grow_v of_o a_o natural_a complexion_n as_o choler_n or_o for_o that_o they_o proceed_v of_o a_o good_a end_n and_o intention_n as_o be_v spare_v and_o frugality_n but_o a_o defect_n of_o carnal_a concupiscence_n be_v condemn_v of_o all_o and_o excuse_v of_o none_o 2._o all_o think_v religious_a man_n to_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o salt_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o the_o light_n of_o the_o world_n as_o my_o scripture_n speak_v and_o therefore_o they_o need_v to_o take_v pain_n that_o the_o true_a propertye_n of_o salt_n and_o light_n may_v concur_v in_o they_o salt_n with_o the_o sharpness_n dry_v up_o the_o humour_n and_o preserve_v from_o putrefaction_n but_o â—it_n be_v not_o pure_a or_o be_v mix_v with_o earth_n it_o not_o only_o not_o preserve_v but_o also_o cause_v

this_o mean_n religion_n be_v found_v stone_n and_o timber_n be_v lay_v and_o raise_v by_o riches_n but_o virtue_n be_v build_v &_o raise_v by_o poverty_n of_o spirit_n 9_o but_o suppose_v that_o there_o be_v not_o any_o thing_n worthy_a of_o commendation_n or_o excellent_a in_o poverty_n be_v it_o not_o a_o great_a dignity_n that_o it_o be_v love_v of_o i_o and_o esteem_v of_o i_o that_o it_o be_v to_o i_o a_o inseparable_a &_o fast_a companion_n during_o the_o whole_a course_n
know_v and_o discover_v and_o that_o be_v a_o over_o great_a security_n and_o confidence_n of_o a_o religious_a man_n in_o his_o own_o continency_n for_o this_o have_v draw_v many_o into_o their_o ruin_n and_o what_o marvel_n since_o it_o be_v pride_n daughter_n who_o have_v a_o will_n to_o be_v chaste_a and_o shune_v not_o the_o danger_n presume_v overmuch_o of_o himself_o my_o lowly_a and_o for_o he_o who_o care_v not_o for_o the_o lose_n of_o his_o own_o good_n do_v nothing_o but_o give_v unto_o thief_n opportunity_n of_o rob_v he_o of_o what_o he_o have_v who_o be_v well_o busy_v be_v christ_n and_o whether_o it_o be_v meet_v by_o idleness_n and_o ease_n to_o patronize_v the_o flesh_n against_o chastity_n when_o as_o thou_o have_v by_o vow_n promise_v thy_o chastity_n to_o god_n some_o cast_v the_o fault_n upon_o the_o devil_n that_o they_o be_v over_o sore_o trouble_v with_o impure_a cogitation_n who_o be_v rather_o culpable_a themselves_o for_o he_o by_o tempt_a seek_v to_o put_v occupation_n upon_o they_o who_o â—ave_n none_n that_o they_o may_v satisfy_v their_o duâ—y_n and_o therefore_o if_o they_o shall_v be_v ever_o busy_a â—n_o some_o pious_a action_n or_o other_o the_o devil_n shall_v not_o have_v any_o place_n and_o the_o chastity_n may_v be_v the_o more_o safe_o keep_v to_o have_v a_o desire_n and_o will_v to_o be_v idle_a and_o not_o to_o have_v a_o will_n in_o religion_n he_o abandon_v thou_o clean_o therefore_o make_v thou_o from_o hence_o forth_o this_o resolution_n &_o firm_a purpose_n that_o thou_o will_v keep_v all_o thy_o rule_n and_o law_n of_o religion_n for_o fear_v lest_o god_n lie_v his_o heavy_a and_o rigorous_a hand_n upon_o thou_o 2._o second_o consider_v what_o our_o saviour_n say_v of_o the_o tree_n that_o do_v not_o bear_v any_o have_v cause_n to_o fear_v that_o god_n will_v with_o the_o axe_n cut_v thou_o down_o &_o remove_v thou_o from_o the_o place_n where_o he_o have_v so_o merciful_o set_v thou_o and_o plant_v another_o for_o thou_o who_o shaâ—l_v serve_v he_o religious_o and_o shall_v bear_v fruit_n to_o life_n everlasting_a therefore_o my_o son_n read_v thy_o rule_n often_o observe_v they_o exact_o be_v fervent_a in_o thy_o vocation_n and_o endeavour_v to_o go_v forward_o from_o one_o virtue_n to_o another_o to_o the_o end_n our_o lord_n may_v gather_v the_o fruit_n that_o he_o desire_v of_o thou_o who_o he_o have_v by_o so_o singular_a a_o privilege_n plant_v in_o the_o vineyard_n of_o holy_a religion_n 3._o three_o consider_v that_o all_o the_o holy_a inspiration_n spiritual_a help_n and_o all_o the_o ordinance_n &_o rule_n of_o religion_n be_v give_v by_o god_n for_o this_o that_o the_o religious_a seek_v to_o perfect_v themselves_o in_o his_o service_n and_o therefore_o thou_o must_v think_v that_o do_v the_o contrary_a thou_o wrong_v god_n and_o injure_v thyself_o very_o much_o and_o have_v just_a occasion_n to_o fear_v lest_o he_o will_v pronounce_v this_o dreadful_a say_n mention_v in_o his_o prophet_n esay_n against_o thou_o in_o the_o land_n of_o the_o holy_a he_o have_v do_v wicked_a thing_n and_o he_o shall_v not_o see_v the_o glory_n of_o our_o lord_n as_o though_o he_o shall_v say_v i_o have_v give_v thou_o a_o place_n in_o a_o holy_a place_n among_o holy_a one_o to_o the_o end_n thou_o shall_v become_v like_a unto_o they_o i_o have_v for_o the_o same_o end_n provide_v thou_o of_o all_o possible_a commodity_n and_o so_o many_o good_a inspiration_n law_n ordinance_n and_o rule_n for_o thy_o better_a help_n and_o the_o more_o perfect_a of_o thou_o in_o my_o service_n and_o all_o these_o help_v thou_o have_v abuse_v and_o have_v be_v so_o far_o from_o profit_v &_o go_v forward_o in_o my_o service_n as_o thou_o be_v become_v worse_o and_o what_o will_v be_v the_o end_n of_o all_o this_o because_o thou_o have_v abuse_v all_o these_o help_n that_o i_o have_v give_v thou_o towards_o thy_o increase_n in_o virtue_n thou_o shall_v not_o have_v any_o part_n in_o my_o eternal_a glory_n 4._o four_o consider_v that_o the_o sin_n which_o be_v commit_v against_o any_o vow_n be_v much_o great_a and_o displease_v god_n more_o than_o do_v other_o sin_n a_o vow_n impose_v a_o great_a and_o straight_a obligation_n of_o serve_v god_n and_o therefore_o when_o the_o fault_n be_v make_v in_o that_o behalf_n the_o sin_n be_v the_o great_a against_o god_n and_o more_o than_o this_o thou_o must_v persuade_v thyself_o that_o all_o which_o thou_o use_v for_o thy_o meat_n and_o drink_v clothing_n or_o otherwise_o whether_o thou_o have_v it_o of_o the_o religion_n whereof_o thou_o be_v a_o unworthy_a member_n or_o otherwise_o by_o way_n of_o alm_n of_o well_o dispose_v person_n turn_v to_o the_o sin_n of_o fraud_n because_o thou_o defraud_a &_o deceave_v thy_o religion_n on_o the_o one_o side_n in_o not_o observe_v the_o rule_n thereof_o and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n thou_o be_v unworthy_a and_o incapable_a to_o pray_v for_o they_o who_o bestow_v such_o alm_n upon_o thou_o for_o our_o lord_n vouchsafe_v not_o to_o hear_v thy_o prayer_n so_o long_o as_o thou_o shall_v omit_v to_o observe_v what_o thou_o have_v promise_v he_o 5._o last_o consider_v how_o fervent_a and_o earnest_a a_o desire_n thou_o have_v to_o serve_v god_n when_o he_o do_v first_o call_v thou_o unto_o religion_n and_o if_o even_o now_o notwithstanding_o thou_o be_v entangle_v in_o so_o many_o sin_n and_o affection_n of_o the_o world_n thou_o yet_o feel_v in_o thyself_o so_o hâ—rty_a and_o earnest_a a_o desire_n to_o aspire_v to_o perfection_n whence_o be_v it_o that_o be_v in_o so_o holy_a a_o place_n amid_o so_o many_o and_o excellent_a helpâ—_n and_o mean_n of_o profit_v to_o perfection_n thou_o be_v so_o miserable_a cold_a and_o negligent_a and_o if_o thou_o answer_v i_o that_o thou_o be_v indeed_o a_o grievous_a sinner_n but_o thou_o enterd_v into_o religion_n to_o be_v good_a whence_o come_v it_o that_o after_o so_o long_a time_n of_o thy_o be_v &_o of_o train_n up_o in_o this_o school_n of_o virtue_n thou_o seem_v to_o be_v so_o far_o of_o from_o thy_o first_o desire_n and_o from_o that_o which_o appertain_v to_o thy_o profession_n and_o therefore_o my_o son_n be_v ashamed_a that_o thou_o be_v so_o imperfect_a &_o make_v a_o firm_a resolution_n to_o return_v to_o thy_o first_o fervour_n and_o to_o a_o exact_a observation_n of_o thy_o rule_n &_o of_o thy_o institute_n that_o thou_o may_v from_o this_o time_n forward_o serve_v god_n in_o all_o love_n and_o holiness_n as_o meet_v be_v thou_o shall_v do_v certain_a consideration_n that_o may_v help_v to_o the_o observe_n of_o the_o rule_n in_o religion_n the_o first_o be_v to_o read_v they_o often_o and_o to_o meditate_v the_o forementioned_a point_n every_o month_n once_o or_o more_o often_o to_o the_o end_n by_o such_o meditation_n thou_o may_v stir_v up_o in_o thyself_o a_o desire_n of_o observe_v they_o and_o to_o conceive_v a_o firm_a purpose_n never_o to_o infringe_v or_o break_v any_o rule_n
