in_o joy_n then_o pain_n because_o they_o be_v carry_v by_o god_n without_o any_o labour_n of_o they_o to_o that_o most_o happy_a state_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v call_v the_o spiritual_a oil_n there_o they_o be_v with_o god_n as_o it_o be_v only_o passive_o and_o i_o call_v it_o so_o because_o although_o it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o soul_n in_o that_o union_n be_v always_o in_o action_n yet_o not_o so_o much_o inseeking_a after_o as_o in_o possess_v for_o she_o rather_o exercise_v the_o act_n of_o possess_v and_o enjoy_v than_o the_o act_n of_o desire_v i_o do_v not_o know_v whether_o gregory_n have_v this_o as_o it_o be_v passive_a union_n from_o the_o time_n that_o he_o go_v into_o the_o desert_n for_o god_n do_v in_o such_o manner_n communicate_v himself_o unto_o he_o as_o that_o he_o every_o day_n desire_v more_o and_o therefore_o do_v not_o so_o much_o entertain_v himself_o in_o enjoy_v that_o which_o be_v give_v he_o as_o with_o new_a desire_n to_o see_v himself_o every_o day_n approach_v near_o unto_o god_n s._n denys_n the_o areopagite_n say_v that_o hierotheus_n his_o master_n have_v the_o state_n of_o spiritual_a rest_n and_o fruition_n which_o we_o have_v speak_v of_o and_o he_o put_v it_o down_o for_o the_o high_a perfection_n that_o be_v in_o this_o life_n and_o all_o the_o contemplative_n be_v of_o the_o same_o opinion_n and_o this_o be_v the_o only_a reason_n why_o the_o surname_n of_o divine_a be_v give_v to_o hierotheus_n for_o this_o union_n make_v the_o soul_n to_o be_v the_o same_o with_o god_n and_o very_a like_o the_o divine_a nature_n the_o which_o do_v not_o exercise_v its_o operation_n with_o pain_n and_o toil_n but_o joy_n i_o have_v tell_v upon_o diverse_a occasion_n this_o so_o common_a opinion_n unto_o gregory_n fifteen_o year_n before_o his_o death_n and_o though_o he_o yield_v also_o to_o it_o for_o he_o know_v it_o very_o well_o yet_o he_o esteem_v it_o be_v better_a for_o himself_o to_o be_v in_o action_n and_o always_o love_a god_n and_o his_o neighbour_n labour_v therein_o both_o day_n and_o night_n and_o therefore_o he_o embrace_v this_o estate_n the_o more_o willing_o for_o he_o say_v that_o god_n have_v give_v he_o that_o exercise_n as_o be_v the_o best_a and_o that_o he_o be_v to_o endeavour_v with_o all_o his_o strength_n not_o to_o leave_v it_o off_o for_o any_o joy_n or_o fruition_n whatsoever_o for_o he_o can_v not_o conceive_v how_o in_o this_o life_n that_o shall_v be_v most_o perfect_a which_o have_v least_o merit●and_v that_o enjoy_n be_v not_o of_o so_o much_o merit_n as_o take_v of_o pain_n be_v but_o i_o will_v leave_v this_o doctrine_n for_o wise_a man_n to_o determine_v and_o will_v prosecute_v my_o intent_n gregory_n his_o transformation_n into_o say_v i_o come_v not_o to_o do_v my_o will_n but_o my_o father_n and_o in_o another_o place_n it_o be_v hoove_v i_o to_o do_v the_o work_n of_o he_o that_o send_v i_o while_o it_o be_v day_n it_o be_v also_o well_o know_v that_o the_o life_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n from_o his_o birth_n till_o his_o death_n be_v a_o continual_a bear_n of_o the_o cross_n of_o our_o sin_n work_v thereby_o our_o redemption_n so_o as_o all_o his_o life_n be_v a_o suffering_n of_o trouble_n in_o these_o therefore_o gregory_n desire_v and_o also_o do_v imitate_v christ_n wherefore_o in_o his_o life_n there_o be_v but_o little_a fruition_n and_o joy_n and_o much_o care_n and_o trouble_v so_o as_o it_o seem_v that_o this_o want_n of_o sensible_a joy_n may_v be_v esteem_v a_o privilege_n and_o particular_a gift_n of_o god_n since_o that_o without_o these_o favour_n his_o divine_a majesty_n bestow_v upon_o he_o that_o which_o he_o be_v wont_a to_o give_v to_o other_o that_o have_v they_o as_o may_v be_v see_v in_o the_o knowledge_n wisdom_n fortitude_n perseveance_n and_o all_o the_o other_o divine_a gift_n where_o with_o he_o be_v endue_v hereby_o also_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o god_n direct_v he_o in_o way_n proper_a to_o man_n for_o his_o divine_a majesty_n do_v for_o the_o most_o part_n give_v those_o joy_n to_o his_o friend_n in_o the_o begin_n of_o their_o conversion_n when_o they_o begin_v to_o die_v to_o the_o world_n and_o live_v in_o god_n than_o he_o bring_v they_o into_o his_o cellar_n to_o give_v they_o a_o taste_n then_o he_o give_v they_o some_o light_n and_o joy_n as_o a_o pledge_n or_o earnest_n of_o that_o which_o be_v in_o heaven_n to_o make_v they_o walk_v on_o with_o strength_n and_o perseverance_n but_o after_o they_o have_v profit_v and_o be_v grow_v strong_a he_o invit_v they_o to_o the_o high_a degree_n of_o charity_n which_o be_v to_o suffer_v and_o die_v for_o their_o belove_a we_o have_v example_n of_o both_o in_o the_o
